Patio Furniture Set

I have a small sun porch attached to my house, and I wanted a small table set, but a full size patio table set would have taken up the entire area. This was absolutely perfect for my small space! The hardware (hinges, nuts, etc) looks like it is good quality, and the wood has a nice solid feel to it (I helped my brother-in-law put together a playset from China a few weeks ago, and that wood felt about as strong as a wet paper towel).

The cushions that come with the bistro set are decent, if I had to pick one item to complain about that might be it. They could use just a little better cushioning material (I'm 5'10 and 170 pounds). My cushions were more of a solid tan, not an off-white with black trim as the picture shows. I actually like the color of my cushions better, so this wasn't an issue for me.

FYI - they recommend oiling the table and chairs for long-term durability. I used boiled linseed oil on my 2 weeks ago, and it is still slightly tacky (not unexpected given the humid weather we've had). You might want to wait until you are done with it for the season before oiling it, so that the wood can fully absorb the oil during the off-season and it is ready to use in the spring. Outdoor Interiors Eucalyptus 3 Piece Square Bistro Outdoor Furniture Set - includes cushions

We have had this set for a while now and still love it! It is the perfect size for a small space. The only maintenance is that it needs to be wiped down with teak oil once a year, which is a piece of cake.'

Two-way Radios - two-way family service radio, midland

The radios by themselves are good, but be careful to read the fine print. The first time I went to use the radios one of them didn't have a full charge on it. No problem, I just used AA batteries. Then we realized we could barely hear each other through the headphones even with the radios turned to max volume. I thought it might be the headphones, but they were very loud when plugged into a friend's radio made by a different company. Midland blamed it on the headphones anyway, but they were not covered under the warranty. So I didn't use the radios again for a few months until we went on another trip and I made sure to place the radio on the charger a day early this time so it would have ample time to charge. Same problem one radio didn't take but half a charge. I contacted Midland on Friday explaining my situation, they got back to me on Wednesday to say there was probably an issue with the battery pack (No duh). I emailed back around 10:30 am and said I figured that much, but how do I correct it. They got back to me on Thursday night saying I needed to buy another battery pack because they are not covered under the warranty either. So what is covered? Turns out not much, not the headphones, not the battery packs, not the charger, not the adapter and not even the antennas. In short if all you need is just the radios and there isn't a problem with them, the radios are OK, but heaven help you if there is a problem with them. It will take forever for someone to tell you that's not covered under the warranty. That large 3 year warranty logo needs to include an even larger asterisk. Radios get 5 stars, everything else including the warranty and service gets 1 star for an average of 3 stars. If I need to buy all new accessories to replace all these defective ones I just bought, maybe I should consider a different brand radio. Midland GXT1000VP4 36-Mile 50-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Black/Silver)

In the past I have taken walkie talkies to the State Fair and they were unusable because of all the chattering going on. I brought the Midland GXT1000VP4 radios to the fair and randomly selected a channel and privacy setting. They worked perfectly. Not one other person broadcasted on the same channel (200,000 people in attendance). We could hear each other crystal clear. You either get a crystal clear signal or no signal at all with these radios; there is never any static. They lasted the whole day on one charge and the battery indicator still read full.

The only complaint that I have is when putting them on the charger, it takes a bit of menuvering to get the charge light to go on...and I have had it go off after about 15 minutes before. In that case I reseated the one radio again and the light stayed on for the whole charging period.

I recently purchased these radios after our 2-year old Motorolas were stolen. We use the radios exclusively for RVing (communicating between driver and spotter when maneuvering). The audio on these radios is MUCH better than the previous Motorolas. Menu functions seem to be a bit more intuitive as well.

The only negative I have found is "range", or lack thereof. Midland advertises 36 miles. (Yeah, I know, that's on a straight shot with nothing in between, but how many of us really use them under those conditions!) In the real world we were able to transmit about 1 mile.

I knew this limitation going in, so I wasn't disappointed.

The radios work well for our purposes.

The Midland GTX 1000VP4's work great and are easy to use. I have used them for many hours at a time. The low battery indicator comes on long before they quit working. The published range is very optimistic. But it is the best of this class I have used. I took back 2 different Cobras that didn't work well before buying the Midland radios.

i bought this radio to talk to my family when we are out in the wood. The fact it says it works upto 36 miles, that is only if you are in Desert with no blocking mountain or building. however, in the city this radio worked upto 3 miles.

I love the fact that you can use Alkaline batteries or rechargeable. You never need to buy battery. It comes with rechargeable stand which can even charge your AA recahargable batterries beside its own included battery. It has alot of futures. Over all it is nice collection for those who like to go outdoor activity. advertise 36 miles, where it should say 6 miles.

A great two-way radio for direct or simplex communication for campers, hikers or anyone that requires short distance conversation less than two miles. Remember that the distance marketed by Midland and any 22 channels or greater radios is applicable only when you can see the person 10 miles away without any objects including trees or shrubs in between. Unless you are in a flat desert or ocean, you will not get the range as advertised.

One way to obtain longer distance with a UHF radio is by raising its height. If one of the user is at higher altitude such as hills, tall rocks or building, both can communicate at farther distance.

Don't forget to obtain an FCC license to operate on the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies for channel 1-7, and 15-22. These frequencies can operate up to 5 watt and you will be sharing the same frequencies with other GMRS users. It is illegal to operate these frequencies without a license though many operate the radios without knowing that you can receive a hefty fine. The license is very easy to obtain through FCC website for Universal Licensing System (ULS)[...].

The license is for 5 years [...]. No test is required for GMRS but you can operate on any of the GMRS frequencies for your entire family under one license. That is your parents, childrens and any close member of the family.

My son is using the Midland GXT1000 when he is at the mall or at the playground with mommy. I can inline skate in the same park and communicate with him at any time. It's a great tool and less complicated than a cell phone. - 2 Way Radio - Two-way Family Service Radio - Walkie Talkie - Midland'

Photography Accessory - wrist strap, canon g11

I own a Canon 20D and this wrist gives you the possibility to carry the camera on a secure way plus adding major mobility than the standard neck strap, you can take the camera far away from your body much more than wearing the neck strap. i.e.: Shooting down on a building window is really difficult with the neck strap on.

Suitable for all SLR cameras and some Point N Shot, note that the strap end is wider than several ones included on the Point N shot cameras. Canon WS20 Wrist Strap for all Canon Camcorders

I'm using the Canon WS20 wrist strap on my Canon PowerShot S5 IS. I like the good and secure feeling it provides, especially also when I've the Canon Speedlite 430EX attached to the cam. Very handy, very comfortable, 100 % recommended!

I bought this hand strap not for a camcorder but for a Canon S3 IS digi-cam. The strap fit snugly through the eyelet that is intended for the camera's neck strap. The strap holds the camera securely and is long enough to provide plenty of mobility for access the camera controls. The only negative is that I wish the entire strap was made of the same material. The portion that threads through the eyelet is woven nylon but the hand portion appears to be a cotton blended fabric. I suppose the cotton breathes better but it has a more faded and worn look to it than the nylon portion.

I got this for a Canon G-10 and it fits perfectly through the strap mount on the side of the camera (they enlarged it from the G-9). It is nice to have a solid and substantial strap like this. I'm glad I got it and didn't use the flimsy wrist strap I had from an older point-and-shoot camera. This strap is well made and does its job.

I wanted to replace the neck strap I have never used as a neck strap with a wrist strap. I would actually wrap the neck strap around my arm while using my camera. I was shocked when I couldn't find a Canon wrist strap for my camera. While searching Amazon, I found this camcorder wrist strap. After reading the other reviews of people using it with a DSLR I figured I would give it a shot. It works great!

The area of that strap that loops through the camera's ring is a little thicker and wider than that of the neck strap. I actually think it is thicker and wider by design, one connection point verses two connection points. Even though it is larger, it still fits perfectly in the camera's ring.

The size of the wrist loop is also just right to fit my rather large/wide hand. Also, the length is perfect since I can still grip the camera comfortably while using the strap.

If you too are looking for a wrist strap for your Canon DSLR, give this one a try.

Update 11/25/2010: I recently updated my camera to Canon T1i, wrist strap still works perfectly. After using this strap for over a year, I still love it. My only complaint is ever-so-often I miss my neck strap. I'm considering adding a Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip for Canon XSi Digital SLR Cameras and a Canon 2344A001 E1 Hand Strap for Eos Rebel Series. This setup would allow for the neck strap to remain attached.

I've never liked neck straps for anything, and I always need a wrist strap for my cameras (have slippery hands, as I wash them all day long for my job). Did some research and although there aren't many choices really, am fairly happy with this one - I do feel it's the best of the bunch. Got it for my new G11, and while I was concerned there wasn't a slider to tighten up the fit I don't really think I need it - despite having small hands. The material isn't slippery so it doesn't feel like the strap will slip off easily (but it does make quite a good cat hair catcher), and while I thought at first it would be too long/big it actually is a good size that allows me enough room to maneuver my hand around the camera. Reading some other wrist/hand strap options I was concerned that once your hand was "locked in" to position, it would be difficult to make on the fly changes to settings. I'm glad I chose this one just for this reason.

It's a tight fit to get it into the G11's strap handle, but not a biggie - I didn't need anything extra to poke it through, and once it went through no problem to strap it all in.

Based on a review I read, someone had used the strap on a Canon G10. Was perfect timing, becuase I just bought a G10 for my wife for her birthday. She didn't like the strap that connected on both sides. The WS20 was perfect. Especially since I bought the Canon PSC-85 case for the G10. The 2 together are a good combo.

I bought this strap for a Canon G10 camera. The standard straps are too flimsy and even break - not sure why this strap is not marketed as an accessory for all of the Powershot series cameras. The strap lanyard fits perfectly into the little slot on the G10. The strap is very strong and fits nicely on the wrist. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it lacks a little cinch mechanism like you'd find on a wrist strap for a Nintendo Wii. Not absolutely necessary, but if it had one, you would be sure the thing would not slip off of the wrist. I probably wouldn't have thought it a benefit had I not seen it on a Wii controller. Definitely worth the price for what you get. I opted not to get a strap for my last camera - it wound up in the bottom of a stream when I tried to take pictures of fish from a small bridge.... - Hand Strap - Canon G11 - Wrist Strap - Camera Wrist Strap'

Notebook Accessories - belkin, usb charger

I've been searching for a product that can extend the outlet on my bathroom for the electrical products that I use. I finally came across this Belkin mini surge protector and features:

- 3 AC power outlets

- 2 USB outlets ONLY for charging (not data transfer) at 5V / 500mA at each port

- Surge protection on all 5 outlets

- 918 Joules Energy Dissipation

- 125V / 15A / 1,875W Continuous Duty Electrical Rating

- 36,000A Maximum Spike Current

- Lifetime Warranty on product

- USD75,0000.00 connected equipment warranty

- 360 degree rotating plug lockable into 4 possible positions

Simple, elegant design in a smooth plastic casing of white and light grey colour. Once plugged, the green LED light will indicate if the power source is grounded.

The box comes with one USB to mini-USB cable to get you started in charging your USB devices as well.

DO NOT throw the prong cover that initially comes attached to the surge protector prong. As the manual states (for those who still care to read the User Manual these days), you can use this plastic prong cover to help further balance the device against any surface. You do this by inserting the plastic prong cover on the bottom of the surge device via a small notch. Also, the plastic cover is handy to use when traveling. Before dumping the surge protector along with your other devices, cover the prongs to prevent it from scratching other objects.

The prongs can be rotated 360 degrees loosely. However, there are 4 positions that enable you to lock it so it doesn't flail along clumsily in any direction. You do this by pressing into the rear a "release button". It's not a raised button, but a flat plastic portion that you have to press hard in order to release the lock. It's quite difficult (at least with the model I received) at first and feels like I'm going to break the plastic button. But I guess if this is normal then it can be construed as a safety measure so it doesn't easily rotate with a simple touch.

IMPROVEMENTS:

The term "mini" is subjective. It isn't really that compact as I would assume from seeing the photo. It is small, yes. However, as a surge protector that can take 3 AC and 2 USB outlets, I will give Belkin the benefit of naming it a mini device.

I would STRONGLY prefer the re-design of the spacing on the AC outlets by allowing larger plugs connected side-by-side. As it is right now, only normal AC plugs and not block-style plugs are allowed without loosing all three outlets. So my proposal is to delete the middle AC outlet and move it to the end-cap of the device (opposite to the 2 USB outlets). As of now, there is nothing there so rather than cramp the 3 AC plugs, then move the third at the end and thus allowing for block-style plugs to be used and still retaining the 3 AC functionality.

OVERALL:

I would not hesitate to recommend the purchase of this surge protection for compact spaces as well as travel purposes especially with the lifetime warranty and amount of protection is offers.

Take note of the selling price Amazon and the others are selling this at. It's ridiculous to see the selling price of this exact device can range anywhere from USD10 to USD30.

Lastly, BE AWARE of the SPECS so you know if the USB device you are plugging is capable of being charged. Belkin Mini Surge Protector Dual USB Charger

Nice hotel room companion for plugging in the laptop, cell phone, iPod, and iPhone when you only have one outlet. The 5v outputs are regulated very well. It's quite a bit larger than it appears in the photograph as well as modestly heavy. Calling it 'mini' is deceptive. It's also rated up to 125v so forget using it anywhere except North America (not mentioned in the technical specs). Otherwise, it's built sturdy as a brick and will endure any punishment your travels may inflict upon it.

To get directly to this items flaw... It cannot recharge/power more than one USB item at a time. So what's the point in having two USB outputs?

The 120V outlets work as advertised. The ability to rotate the prongs is a plus as it can be adjusted to most if not all outlets.

The USB power fails if more than one item at a time is plugged into the surge protector. Even if, say your phone is fully charged, if you go to connect another item to run or charge, the surge protector will not supply the power that both items demand. The items that are connected will act as if they have been disconnected from their power source, then once the surge protector accumulates enough power(not certain, but seem to act as if there are capacitors)to start supplying power once again the items connected to the USB ports start to operate briefly until the surge protector cannot supply enough power for the two items.

As stated before, it will supply ONE item with power, without a problem. But will not supply enough power for two, even if one item is fully charged. - Power Strip - Usb Charger - Travel - Belkin'

Computer Cables - cables, ties

I bought these to keep together a series of thick and disorganized cables behind my computer and they made the job in a breeze. Not only the Velcro is very strong but the way to tied them up by passing them through a hole and then secure them with the Velcro is perfect. And interestingly they are very easy to remove without having to pull too hard. The length is perfect too and coming in different colors makes it easy to identify bunches of cables grouped together for a reason, if you ever need to do so (just make sure you make a note of the colors) Velcro One Wrap Straps, Assorted (90438)

I've used these for about 10 years. LOVE THEM! I try to keep them on hand at all times. Most all of my appliances & all portable device cords have these wraps on them. I used to buy them at Home Depot & some other places. But they seem to be harder to find & Home Depot carries a different brand now, that I don't like. HIGHLY recommend the 3M brand! Great for the myriad of USB cords you may need to carry when traveling, too.

As an additional organizing tip, I put a dollop of bright pink/red nail polish on the tops of plugs that can only go in one way.

I travel for business and I carry my laptop with me. That includes the power cord, extension cord for the power cord, and two network cables for clients that do not use wireless access for security reasons. I always have a spare network cable since not having something work really looks bad to a client. However, I need something to keep all these things organized and neat, because looking professional is an absolute requirement with the consulting work I do. That is why the colors for organizing caught my eye.

I usually run to the local big box store for stuff like this. However, I usually search and check prices on line first if it is not a normal use item. I ran across this listing and when it caught my attention and I bought it. When they arrived and I tried them out they exceeded my expectations.

If you want to organize your computer cables, either for travel or at home, this is exactly what the job calls for.

With all the electronics people are buying lately, me included, there needs to be a way to control all the cables these things bring into our lives. I bought several packages and now color coordinate all the cables matching to one electronic device. Personally I think this company needs to come up with an expanded organizing system which includes these colored cable ties, matching colored mesh bags, and matching colored labels. Different sizes, of course, to really meet everyones needs.

The velcro product is great. Perfect for keeping my cords neatly wrapped. However, I won't purchase from the vendor ever again. They waited a week before they shipped it to me the first time. I never received it, which I can't really blame on them, since it got lost in the mail. But when I called them the first time, they sent me to deal with the post office. USPS tried, but couldn't locate package. So I called the vendor again and suggested they re-send it to me. They finally said they would, and I did receive it four days later...but more than a month from the day I ordered it. That was a lot of hassle for an inexpensive item that cost more to ship than the actual product cost. I should have gone to Best Buy and saved myself the grief. - Cables - Cable Organizers - Ties - Cable Ties'

Leather - ipod touch 4th generation case, leather

I had returned a different more expensive brand because it had no opening for the front camera and no mini stand. This case is well made. Thin. Nicely stitched leather. Fits IPOD Touch 4G perfectly. Allows access to all features. Closes nicely and flat with magnets. Has a little kick stand in back to support hands free viewing ( Not shown in picture) and is incredibly cheap. I don't think you could do better. Also comes with a cleaning clothe and screen protector, which I don't use. 4G Touch Luxury Black Genuine Leather Case Cover & Screen Protector for New Apple iPod Touch 4th Generation - 8GB 32GB 64GB

This case was just as described by other thoughtful reviewers. Yes it smelled some for a few days, it is probably a bonded leather but for $10 far in away better than any of the five or so back side only cases I ordered. It has a magnetic closure to keep the reinforced screen cover closed when carried in my shirt pocket or in my computer bag. I don't need to worry about a sharp object inadvertently seriously damaging the screen.

Clear thin screen covers will protect against damage from use - this cover will protect the screen and back from breakage in day to day handling.

The stand on the back is nice but not so useful if using headphones - I guess I need to try some bluetooth headphone/speakers. In use about 4 weeks - it can be a bit tough to use the touchscreen near the edges - like hitting pause in "landscape" music mode. I can live with this problem as the case does what I want it to do - protect my iPod while not getting in the way of using it. The case is not thin - but I like the extra thickness - the 4th gen is fairly thin for my taste anyways.

Can use all feature of the 4th gen, charge in the case - good product for $10.

I wanted a case that could have the screen protected while carrying in my pocket at work and this one works great. The camera cutouts are just right and I like the magnetic closure. If your looking for a wallet or folio style case for your 4g Ipod, I recommend this one.

I ordered this case so it would be compatble with the bad elf gps and this more than meets my needs.The ipod fits snugly

and I am able to use all of the controls..both front and rear camera work. I haven't noticed any screen darkening from the auto sensor either.I was looking for a case that I coud attach to a lanyard to carry around my neck.Well, surprise there is a small ring attaached to the kickstand in the back which is perfect for me!So, the manifacturer should post pix of this on this web page.I did not notice any offensive odor either, I really gave it the sniff test.All in all a great case that beats the cost of buying one from a big box store.I ordered on sunday and it was here on tuesday, so thank you amazon for the speedy service.This will be great for using for walking and hiking outdoors, using such apps as all in one pedometer and nike+ipod apps.

So, when first buying this, I was very hesitant. I have read reviews about the iPod slipping out, or the case being ruined to easily ect.

Well, it is a really good case. There are a few issues I have noticed with it, but don't let them stop you from buying it. I'd still buy it again if I had to:

1. The leather on the case is very soft, and supple. The problem is, it does stretch. I have a pair of earbuds in my picket with the iPod and pulled it out later, and on the leather was an indent from the earbuds.

2. It's hard to plug anything in to the iPod unless you push the iPod down while holding it. If not, the iPod starts to slip out of the case.

3. A generous amount of dirt seems to get past the screen cover.

Pros:

1. Very soft, and easy to hold

2. Lightweight

3. The stand on the back, a very nice addition. I do wish it could clip on.

4. Does it's job.

It seems like the ipod fits in it fine. However, it was advertised as "genuine leather case" which I highly doubt that it is leather.

Has a horrible chemical smell to it and it looks like any synthetic imitation leather. So, I am dissapointed because I could have bought for $2.99 the same synthetic case if I wanted synthetic.

Really my biggest concern is the smell. I bought this case for my 13 year old son and I'm not so sure that I want to expose him to unknown chemicals as he would be exposed to by touching and breathing. - Leather - Ipod Touch 4th Generation Case'

Kindle Devices - ebook reader, kindle reader

When I wrote this review last August, there was only one Nook, which is now called "Nook First Edition." It continues to be available, but there are two new Nooks. The Nook Color was introduced last fall - it's basically a tablet computer, and runs the Android software that is popular on many smartphones nowadays. It's twice as heavy and costs twice as much as a Kindle, but compared to other tablet computers, it is a very good value.

And now (early June 2011), a new e-ink based Nook is coming out. It's called the "Nook Simple Touch." It is just now starting to ship, so obviously I don't have one and can't tell you anything about it that you can't learn by reading online reviews. But the reviews are very favorable, so if you're considering a Kindle, you should take a look at the new Nook Simple Touch, too.

But the Kindle is nonetheless still a compelling option. It's a mature product, very well designed and easy to use, performance is very zippy, it's competitively priced, and no e-ink based reader has a better, more readable display than the Kindle, not even the new Nook Simple Touch. Also, the Kindle universe is quite extensive: the Kindle store is great and has many thousands of free e-books as well as good deals on most other e-books, and once purchased, you can read your Kindle books on nearly any device you own (computer, phone, tablet), not just your Kindle. And there are tons of great cases and other accessories for the Kindle.

So, while my review compares the Kindle to the older Nook, I'll leave it here because it has a ton of information about the Kindle, a great e-reader that deserves your attention, and because the original Nook continues to be available. That said, I urge you to NOT buy the original Nook. It was a respectable e-reader when it came out in 2009, and still had some value when I wrote about it in August 2010, but it is clearly inferior by today's standards.

------------ my original review --------------

If you're trying to choose between a Nook and a Kindle, perhaps I can help. My wife and I have owned a Nook (the original one), a Kindle 2, and a Kindle DX. When Amazon announced the Kindle 3 this summer, we pre-ordered two Kindle 3's: the wi-fi only model in graphite, and the wi-fi + 3G model in white. They arrived in late August and we have used them very regularly since then. For us, Kindle is better than Nook, but Nook is a good device with its own advantages that I will discuss below. I'll end this review with a few words about the Nook Color.

First, reasons why we prefer the Kindle:

* Speed

In our experience, the Kindle is very zippy compared to the Nook. Page refresh speed (the time it takes a new page to appear after you push the page-turn button) was WAY quicker on Kindle 2 than on Nook, and it's quicker yet on Kindle 3. Yet, I read a whole book on the Nook and didn't find the slower page refresh to be annoying - you get used to it, and it's not a problem.

For me, the more important speed difference concerns navigation - moving the cursor around the screen, for example to pick a book from your library, or to jump to a chapter by selecting it in the table of contents. On Kindle, you do this by pushing a 5-way rocker button, and the cursor moves very quickly. On Nook, you do this by activating the color LCD touchscreen (which normally shuts off when not in use, to conserve battery). A "virtual rocker button" appears on the screen, and you touch it to move the cursor. Unfortunately, the Nook cursor moves very sluggishly. This might not be a big deal to you, but it really got annoying to me, especially since my wife's Kindle was so quick and responsive.

In November 2010, Nook got a software upgrade that increases page refresh speed and makes navigation more responsive. I returned my Nook months ago, so I cannot tell you if the Nook's performance is now equal to the Kindle's, but Nook owners in the comments section have convinced me that the software update improves the experience of using the Nook. If performance is a big factor in your decision, visit a Best Buy and compare Kindle and Nook side by side.

* Screen contrast

You've seen Amazon's claims that the Kindle 3 e-ink has 50% better contrast than Kindle 2 or other e-ink devices. I have no way of precisely measuring the improvement in contrast, but I can tell you that the Kindle 3 display definitely has more contrast than Kindle 2 or Nook. The difference is noticeable, and important: more screen contrast means less eyestrain when reading in poorly lit rooms.

In well-lit rooms, the Nook and Kindle 2 have enough contrast to allow for comfortable reading. But I often read in low-light conditions, like in bed at night, or in a poorly lit room. In these situations, reading on Nook or Kindle 2 was a bit uncomfortable and often gave me a mild headache. When I got the Kindle 3, the extra contrast was immediately noticeable, and made it more comfortable to read under less-than-ideal lighting conditions. (If you go with a Nook, just make sure you have a good reading lamp nearby.)

* Battery life

The Nook's color LCD touch screen drains its battery quickly - I could never get more than 5 days out of a charge. The Kindle 2 had longer battery life than the Nook, and Kindle 3 has even longer life: in the 3 months since we received our Kindle 3's, we typically get 3 weeks of battery life between charges. (We keep wireless off about half the time to save battery power.)

* Weight

Nook weighs about 3 ounces more than the new Kindle, and you can really feel the difference. Without a case, Nook is still light enough to hold in one hand for long reading sessions without fatigue. But in a case, Nook is a heavy sucker. The new Kindle 3 is so light, even in a case, we find it comfortable holding in one hand for long reading sessions.

Reasons some people might prefer the Nook:

* In-store experience

If you need help with your nook, you can take it to any barnes and noble and get a real human to help. You can take your nook into the coffee shop section of your local B&N store and read any book for free for up to one hour per day. When you take your nook to B&N, some in-store special deals and the occasional free book pop up on your screen.

* User-replaceable battery

Rechargeable batteries eventually lose their ability to hold a charge. Nook's battery is user-replaceable and relatively inexpensive. To replace Kindle's battery, Amazon wants you to ship your Kindle to Amazon, and they will ship you back a DIFFERENT Kindle than the one you sent (it's the same model, for example if you send a white Kindle 3, you get a white Kindle 3 back, but you get a "refurbished" one, NOT the exact one you sent them). I don't like this at all.

However, several people have posted comments here that have eased my concerns. Someone looked up statistics on the Kindle's battery and did some simple calculations to show that it should last for 3 or more years. Before that happens, I will surely have upgraded to a newer Kindle model by then. Also, someone found some companies that sell Kindle batteries at reasonable cost and have how-to videos that demonstrate how we can replace the battery ourselves. Doing this would void the Kindle's warranty, but the battery will probably not fail until long after the warranty expires.

[update June 2011: The batteries in the Nook Color and Nook Simple Touch are not replaceable, but the battery in the original Nook is.]

* ePub

Nook uses the ePub format, a widely used open format. Amazon uses a proprietary ebook format. Many libraries will "lend" ebooks in the ePub format, which works with nook but not kindle. However, a free and reputable program called Calibre allows you to translate ebooks from one format to another - it supports many formats, including ePub and Kindle. The only catch is that it doesn't work with copy-protected ebooks, so you can't, for example, buy a Kindle book (which is copy protected) and translate it to ePub so you can read it on a Nook.

* Nook's color LCD touchscreen

The original Nook has a small color LCD screen on the bottom for navigation. This could be a pro or con, depending on your preferences. It makes the Nook hipper and less drab than Kindle. Some people enjoy using the color LCD to view their library or navigate. I did, at first. But after two weeks of use, and comparisons with my wife's Kindle, I found the dedicated buttons of the Kindle easier and far quicker to use than the Nook's color touchscreen. I also found the bright light from the color screen distracting when I was trying to read a book or newspaper (though when not in use, it shuts off after a minute or so to conserve battery).

* expandable capacity

Nook comes with 2GB of internal memory. If you need more capacity, you can insert a microSD card to add up to 16GB more memory. Kindle comes with 4GB of internal memory - twice as much as Nook - but there's no way to expand that. Kindle doesn't accept memory cards of any type. If you mainly use your device to read ebooks and newspapers, this shouldn't be an issue. I have over 100 books on my Kindle, and I've used only a tiny fraction of the memory. Once Kindle's memory fills up, just delete books you don't need immediate access to; you can always restore them later, in seconds, for free.

A few other notes:

Kindle and Nook have other features, such as an MP3 player and a web browser, but I caution you to have low expectations for these features. The MP3 player on the Kindle is like the first-generation iPod shuffle - you can't see what song is playing, and you can't navigate to other songs on your device. I don't like the browser on either device; e-ink is just not a good technology for surfing the web; it's slower and clunkier than LCD screen technology, so even the browser on an Android phone or iPod touch is more enjoyable to use. However, some commenters have more favorable views of either device's browser, and you might, too.

* ebook lending

If you have a Nook or a Kindle, you can "lend" an ebook you purchased to someone else with the same device for up to two weeks. The Nook has always had this feature. The Kindle just got this feature as of December 2010. Most but not all purchased ebooks are lendable, due to publisher restrictions.

* PDF support

Kindle and Nook both handle PDF files, but in different ways. When you put a PDF file on your nook, nook converts it into an ebook-like file, then you can adjust the font size, and the text and pagination will adjust just like with any ebook. But you cannot see the original PDF file in the native format in which it was created. Kindle 3 and Kindle DX have native support for PDF files. You can see PDF files just as they would appear on your computer. You can also convert PDF files to an ebook-like format, and then Kindle handles them just the way the Nook handles them - text and pagination adjust when you change the font size. Unfortunately, some symbols, equations, and graphics get lost or mangled in the translation - even when viewing PDF files in their native format on the Kindle. Moreover, the small screen size of the Kindle 3 and the Nook is not great for PDF files, most of which are designed for a larger page size. You can zoom and pan, but this is cumbersome and tiresome. Thanks to commenters who suggested viewing PDF files in landscape mode on the Kindle (I don't know if you can do this on Nook); this way, you can see the entire top half of the page without panning, and then scroll down to the bottom half. This works a little better.

SUMMARY:

Nook and Kindle each offer their own advantages. We like the nook's user-replaceable battery, compatibility with ePub format, and in-store experience. But we strongly prefer Kindle 3 because its performance is zippier, its higher-contrast screen is easier to read, and it's smaller and lighter so it is more portable and more comfortable to hold in one hand for long reading sessions.

* Nook Color

Everything I wrote about the Nook in this review applies to the original Nook (which continues to be available), not the new Nook Color. To me, the Nook Color is in a different product category than the Kindle or original Nook. Nook Color has an LCD screen, like an iPad or most computer monitors. That's a big disadvantage for people like me, who get headaches from reading a computer screen for long periods of time. Amazon's Kindle product page has an informative section on e-ink vs. LCD displays.

But many people don't have problems reading from computer screens, and the Nook Color is getting glowing reviews in the press and by owners. For the money, it offers a lot of functionality such as a good web browser and the ability to play games and watch movies. But keep in mind: it costs a lot more than the Kindle, it weighs nearly twice as much, it doesn't come in a 3G version, and (unlike the original Nook) the Nook Color doesn't have a user replaceable battery. Cordless Drill - 12v, makita

I recently purchased this replacement battery and while I have yet to determine it's performance over the long haul, initially I am pleased with the purchase. The pod fits perfectly and it has plenty of power. Run time seems to be comparable to OEM batteries. The fit and finish and quality of materials are also comparable to OEM. The item was well packed and arrived quickly. Maximalpower Makita 1220 12v 1220 1222 1233 1234 192681-5 power tool battery pack 2000mAh nicd

I have an old Makita electric drill. The original battery packs would last 15-20 seconds--tops. This Maximalpower battery pack has given new life to an old but good electric drill. I don't use my drill in my profession but do use it a few times a month around the house. It's been two months and this battery pack is as potent as it was when I purchased it two months ago. So far, I am very happy with this purchase and would purchase another if a big project came along.

These batteries for cordless drills only last about five years, if that, and they are very expensive. I don't know how the companies got us away from electric drills which would last for many more years and with no trouble charging batteries etc. - 1234 - Makita - Battery - 12v'

Strap

The strap is amazing and much better than what i expected. I was suprised by the velvety padding around the neck and how unique and gorgous it is. My favorite part was the packing. It was literally wrapped like a very precious gift. Untied the bow, opened the box, pulled out the tissue paper and saw my new strap. I like that they seem to take so much time and care in their product. Made it seem very precious and special. As for the strap itself, very lovely pattern and incredibly sturdy. It has actual metal and not plastic so it's very dependable. I will definitly be buying another one for my other camera very soon. what can i say, it works and it works great.

ever since i used them, i never had that gut feeling of "is it ganna slip" or, your shoulder being a bit high and rigid just to try and hold the sling in place.

Apple Computer Accessories - blueproton, ipad 2 cover

I poured over the reviews here and on the Apple Store website before I made a decision to purchase the Smart Cover. I also researched other websites for covers and cases. This seemed to be the best of what is out there and I am glad I bought it. The magnets popped right into place, they hold firmly, the cover folds up easily to prop up my iPad2, there is no residue, no streaking nor could I find ANYTHING wrong with the Smart Cover! The cover wraps around back too, and stays there while holding it, and it protects the back of the iPad2 from whatever surface you place it on.

Don't waste you money on the anti-glare covers [Vapor Splash] either, really not necessary unless you are careless with your iPad2.

I did purchase a Hard Candy Case in the bubble white because of the rave reviews. It has not arrived yet, so I cannot tell you what it's like. But from what I read, the iPad with the Smart Cover fit nicely into it, and protects it while you travel.

Hope this helps those who are not sure about all the accessories for your iPad2 [which ROCKS by the way] Apple iPad Smart Cover - Protective cover for web tablet - polyurethane - green - Apple iPad 2

I thought the videos of it looked neat. But it is flimsy, feels cheap, and looks cheap. When you fold it like the video shows, you have to force it a bit at first and it feels like bending a piece of cardboard. Then when I got it folded in the triangle, standing it up in picture frame/webcam mode felt so precarious. It would fall over with a slight touch. When using the iPad in keyboard mode on my lap, the cover moves all around and makes it difficult to keep the iPad steady. It must be removed or held open awkwardly to use the camera. The polyurethane picks up dirt and marks easily. The inside does wipe the screen of fingerprints, but because of the sectioned design, it only wipes off where it touches, leaving smeary dirty lines across the screen. When holding it like a book, the cover flops around or falls down off the back if you are holding it up. Plus it doesn't protect the back at all when the cover is closed. I guess it is better than the original case, and the magnetics are cool, but overall it was a waste and I returned it. I am surprised to read the reviews on Apple's website in which people laud the quality and craftsmanship. I think it is like a junky piece of cardboard magnets in it. And $40 bucks is ridiculous!

I really can't stand this cover. It makes holding your iPad completely awkward and the so called stand option doesn't really work. I have had it since day one of the iPad 2 release and it seems to be getting flimsier and flimsier. My iPad continually slips off in both landscape and portrait mode. I am so thankful that other companies have come out with some covers. Waiting for my new one to arrive. I don recommend this cover. It was a great concept but not really functional for the avid user.

Considering the AMAZINGNESS of the iPad 2, I expected this item to be a little more than what it is: A cheap piece of fabric with a magnetic hinge. This is literally the worst money I have ever spent and DEFINITELY would not recommend this item unless you like throwing away your money.

I've really been looking forward to buying the new iPad cover. It took me a month to find one in bright blue. Seems they were sold out everywhere.

Now, I've been home for an hour and still trying to figure out how to get my iPad to sit against the folded cover so I can use it to type. The "hinge" is really not a hinge. It just looks like one, unless mine is defective. The thing is so flimsy and slides up and down. I can't imagine slipping this into my briefcase without worrying that it will fall off. Seems like I'll have to buy a cover for the iPad cover.

I can't believe all the hype over this thing. It looks cool. The videos on Apple's web site look really slick. Yet here I am trying to get the darn thing to fold up like the video so the cover will actually support the iPad. Am I having trouble with this because I am not seven years old?

I plan to return this thing tomorrow.

This cover was purchased to protect the screen of my wife's Ipad 2. It was very easy to install, it took her just under five seconds to attach and it fit perfectly. The folds on the cover are ideal for setting the angle of the Ipad 2 for typing on a flat surface. She carries her Ipad everywhere she goes and has had no scratchs on the screen because of this purchase. A++ from her, which is high praise for any item. A great deal!

The cover is kinda neat, it's got that apple feel and ingenuity to it, but has some problems. The biggest one I found is that the cover just doesn't stay closed, and doesn't stay open either. The magnets just aren't strong enough. If you hold the thing like an ebook, then you have this silly half-cover flopping down behind it. For all the hype in the media about this thing, it really doesn't deliver. I put a video up on youtube describing the problem, search for 'ipad 2 smart cover doesn't stay closed' and you'll see what I mean. - Apple Computer Accessories - Ipad 2 Cover - Blueproton - Apple'

Dell Inspiron Adapter - dell inspiron, laptop power adapters

I was very skeptical about buying this AC adapter. I had changed batteries in my computer and I was still receiving a message that my AC adapter was not recognized and my battery was not charging. My old adapter was still powering my computer but nothing else. Dell's website has the worst reviews for the AC adapters so I thought this would be a better/cheaper route. The product is working perfectly. I plugged it in and it worked right away. My screen did not display the "AC Adapter is not recognized" upon powering up and the battery is charging. I am very pleased with this product. OEM Dell Ac Adapter Laptop Charger for Dell INSPIRON ,Dell XPS ,Dell Studio, Dell Latitude ,Dell Vostro, P/N PA-10 PA10 90w 90 watt Genuine/Original/OEM Portable Charger for Laptop Notebook Computer Battery Charger Power Supply Cord Plug

This is a REAL Dell charger. A bit bigger than the one that came with my Latitude D630, and uses a 3-prong plug instead of 2 prong, but works perfectly. There are a LOT of junky AC adaptors on the market which power the laptops, but do NOT charge the batteries. This is a REAL charger/adaptor. High quality. Works perfectly. Fair price...so I leave this ALWAYS at my desk at home ready to plug in whenever I use my laptop there, and keep the other (original one) ALWAYS in my laptop bag so I've got it if I'm travelling and need it!

I have been very pleased with this power supply. It has been operating every day for the past month since I bought it and it has been working fine. It is interesting to note that this power supply is a full 90W supply. Please don't be fooled into buying the cheaper 60W versions from other vendors. These cheaper 60W supplies burn themselves out after about a month, especially if you are using USB devices that need to draw power from the laptop via the USB port. I know this from personal experience. This supply is an OEM replacement my original laptop power supply, not just a cheaper knockoff.

My old adapter was still powering my computer but nothing else. This power supply is a 90W supply and the system BIOS on my DELL E1705 recognizes it & it charges correctly. Please don't be fooled into buying the cheaper versions from other vendors. I have had an experience with cheaper power supplies that burn themselves out after a year, to the day!. This is especially true if you are using USB devices that need to draw power from the laptop via the USB port. I know this from personal experience.

This supply is an real OEM replacement for my original laptop power supply, not just a cheaper knockoff.

The product is working perfectly. I plugged it in and it worked right away. My screen no longer displays the "AC Adapter is not recognized" upon powering up and the battery is charging.

I am very pleased with this product.

When charger arrived I plugged it into the back of my Dell E1505 and it did feel a little loose so doesn't appear to be the exact model you get from Dell. After a while I noticed this buzzing sound coming from the charger part (the large rectangular portion of the charger where the wires connect) when it was connected to the outlet and into my running laptop. Not sure if it was a fire hazard but I returned it just in case. Sorry, can't recommend.

For two days this product worked OK, then it started sparking and fizzing and did not work when plugged into my laptop. A guy at Best Buy looked at it and as soon as he plugged it in he said "oh crap, that shouldn't be plugged in at all!" because it was dangerous. I bought this product because of the scary reviews of the non-DELL chargers, but it just goes to show you that anything can be a poor quality piece of crap.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. On this computer the charger allows the computer to run when plugged in, but does not charge the battery. I have to stay plugged in at all times to use my computer with this product as my charger.

I bought this adapter because the product page said it's compatible with my Dell Inspiron 6000. Before I plugged it in, I noticed that the output amperage is different than my original adapter. I checked elsewhere on the Internet, including the Dell site, and I could find no other reference to this adapter being compatible with my laptop. Other websites list the 6400 as a compatible model, but not the 6000. The wrong amperage might not appear to be a problem immediately, but it can cause severe damage to a system. The seller should fix their listing and be more careful about listing compatibility accurately. I do not regard this seller as trustworthy.

I bought this as a replacement and spent the extra money to get the dell product. Unfortunately this only powers the computer if it is plugged in and will not charge the battery. By the time I replaced the battery and figured out it was the chord, I could not return it!! Bad warranty, bad product. You might as well go with the knock off products and take your chances, at least they are cheaper to replace! - Laptop Power Adapters - Dell Inspiron - Laptop Charger - Dell Inspiron Adapter'

Dtv Antenna - indoor antenna, terk

To start, your antenna is only as good as the signal that is reaching your home! The HDTVi does a great job on receiving UHF signals, a very good job on VHF signals. From alot of reviews of antennas, it would appear people are clueless on HDTV reception. For your local reception, I'd check out the forum at the following address. They have information and experience going back a couple years on HDTV reception in many cities. So before trying to wrestle with antennas, first make sure you aren't searching for nothing. When I started, I couldn't find ABC not because of the antenna, but because the station was transmitting for four days! http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=7e85bb49c56fa3787e7ed73e6ec7473d&forumid=45

I tried 5 antennas, an old one, the HDTVi, the Terk TV5, Radio Shack amplified antenna (15-1880), and Philips' amplified antenna (SCA050). The best reception was received on the Radio Shack, however, the amplifier needed to be higher for reception of CBS while it had to be lower for FOX or FOX wouldn't come in. This was bothersome. I was also able to get a weak NBC signal unlike any other antenna I had, but the signal just wasn't strong enough. The TV5 had mediocre coverage. It was able to get UHF decently, but it was fighting to get upper and lower VHF. The Philips and HDTVi had similar reception, but the HDTVi wasn't amplified which meant I would have more options regarding moving the antenna around, such as placing in the attic without worrying about plugging it in.

Ultimately, as far as UHF was concerned, each antenna had similar results. It was in VHF that the antennas were a bit different. As far as ranking the antennas for reception:

1) Radio Shack's 15-1880 Best

2) Terk HDTVi Very good

3) Philips SCA050 Very good

4) Terk TV5 Decent

The Terk HDTV wins out because of the lower price, the fact that it is unamplified, had very good reception, and took up the least space. One last comment would regard the coax cable you use. I tried using some coax (about 30 feet) just laying around to hook up the receiver to the antenna. The signal just wouldn't carry the distance. When I used a much higher quality coax that came with the installation of my sat dish, the signal came in loud and clear.

If possible, I'd recommend get a few antennas at the same time and make sure you can return them, most stores have 30 day policies. Plan on spending a week on gaining the best reception with the best antenna for your home. Terk Technology HDTVi VHF/UHF HDTV Indoor Antenna

If you're looking for a plain old rabbit-ear type antenna with about the same performance, this model will work for you but it's nothing special. It didn't improve the picture over our cheap $10 rabbit ear set with UHF loop. It's large and unstable with such a small base. One advantage is that the VHF telescoping antennae are quite thick and stout, much more durable than your average cheapo antenna.

I am a cable TV professional and have the gear to make actual measurements. I took readings on all the local channels and compared them to my simple antenna. This one measured at most 10% higher in signal strength, not enough to make a difference in the picture.

Here's a couple tips on antennas in general:

Other posts are correct when they say there's nothing HD about any antenna. The HD channels your TV tunes in are simply UHF channels, though it tries to hide that from you. So as long as your antenna has UHF capability then it's already HD capable. Don't waste money replacing an existing antenna thinking you need a new one for HD. For those of you who don't get the lingo, VHF uses the long pole antenna and includes integer-numbered channels 2-13. Everything else is UHF (including the ones your TV calls decimal numbers like 5.1, 5.2, etc) which uses the loop antenna or t-cross type elements as in this model.

One more note, an "amplified antenna" will not improve reception. They are made for applications with long cable runs or where you need to split the signal to several locations--they boost the signal to overcome signal loss introduced by the cables and splitter. If you are connecting the antenna to a single device, then the amplifier will not help you, in fact it's more likely to make things worse. The antenna tunes in what is coming through the airwaves, and an amplifier can not improve the strength of that signal in the antenna. If you are getting a bad picture, an amplifier will not improve it, it will only increase the power of the bad signal resulting in a 'louder' bad signal. It's much like on a stereo when you're listening to the radio and you hear static, turning up the volume only makes the static louder, it does not improve reception.

I was shopping around for an indoor HDTV antenna until I stumbled across Terk's HDTVi. I bought one but the HDTV reception was terrible. My Philips Magnavox SCP030 from Walmart even worked better.

I still needed a good indoor antenna so I headed to RadioShack. First I tried the RadioShack's Amplified HDTV antenna but that didn't work so well either. I noticed they also had a Terk HDTVa in stock so I exchanged it with that one.

The HDTVa and the HDTVi are essentially the same except the "a" version has an extra adaptor called an in-line signal amplifier. It's a powered adaptor that goes on the end of the coaxial cable. After attaching that to the antenna, the signal jumped from 75% to 85% signal strength.

I HIGHLY recommend the HDTVa version instead of the HDTVi. If you've already bought the HDTVi, you can make it an HDTVa by getting an in-line signal amplifier from RadioShack or any online store. - Terk - Hdtv - Indoor Antenna - Tv Antenna'

Excellent Product - swiss watch, watches

I'm more the utilitarian watch type. I like a simple, sturdy, easy-to-read, classic looking watch and this one definitely fits those criteria. I've tried three cheaper watches that look similar and each has held up for about a year before having a problem with either water, the face cracking, or the metal chipping.

I've only had this one for a month, but it seems much more solid than the other watches I've had trouble with. The price was also significantly cheaper on Amazon than any similar Swiss Army watches I could find elsewhere. One thing that I particularly appreciate is that it doesn't tick loudly as can be the case with some Timex Expedition watches. Also, this watch is a little larger than the other women's watches I have had, so it suits me, a small wristed fellow, quite well. Victorinox 241084 Stainless Swiss Army Youth Watch

This watch was exactly what I was looking for. Being over age 50 my eye sight up close is not what is used to be. I was looking for a watch I can see without pulling out the peepers. I can see it just fine and it is comfortable to wear. I can't see the date I wish is were larger. I am a casual dresser so the classic style of the watch works with anything I wear casual to dress.

I needed a watch that I could depend on, see, and durable. My last watch,(not swiss army, but a good one),thought would last forever,wrong! So, found this one first. The price was right, swiss-quartz, mineral. So, after looking at everything, I always came back to this one. So, purchaced it. When I first saw it, you could see the quality, and beauty. Bigger, and a little heavy, but after wearing it, I got used to it. The more I use it, the more I like it. This watch will never need replacing, unless I loose it.

For anyone expecting to receive a 42 mm watch, you might not receive it. The watch I received is tiny - measuring about 28 mm case size. Even after reporting to Amazon that this watch is nowhere near a 42 mm case size, the description of this product is still incorrect. What a waste of time and money.

I wanted a very simple easy to read watch ... and this one is perfect! My eyes are not the greatest so the large hands & numbers are great ... can even read the time in the movies where it's dark. The price was fantastic for such a fine watch.

I thought that ordering movies was awesome, but noway.... I love this watch its awesome, the seller described it exactly what it was. for someone who had a swiss army and lost it. I thought what a better way to order old style swiss army watches as oppose to the new modern ones that they sell in macy's or any other store that are so over priced its not even funny. This watch is simple gives me the time, it fits perfectly on my wrist. I honestly love amazon, and from now on I will be doing all my ordering from Amazon. :) thanks, I would highly recommend this watch, as far as the quality is the best. I am not so much in name brands but at times, its nice to have a brand name watch. - Casual Watch - Victorinox Swiss Army - Swiss Watch - Watches'
