Science Fiction - science fiction, comedy

Few DVD releases will generate the excitement among fans that this boxed set will, and for good reason: The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., is arguably one of the best TV shows of ANY genre to have been produced in the past 20 years. (As its tag line promised, "Smile. You're about to meet your new hero.")

Not only does this box set include pristine transfers of the entire series (comprised of 27 episodes which aired on Fox from Aug. 27, 1993-May 20, 1994), it also boasts an in-depth feature interview with star and cultural icon Bruce (Army of Darkness) Campbell, who supported this DVD release in every way.

In addition, the studio has announced these great "extras" include Brisco's Book of Coming Things; A Brisco County Writer's Room, a write-em cowboy reunion; History of Brisco County Documentary; A Reading from the Book of Bruce; and Tools of the Trade, an interactive gadets gallery.

Kudos to Fox Studios for getting it right! (Note: while the individual episodes have been available for sometime on VHS, this is the first time the series has been released on DVD, and the first time the show has been released in a single boxed set in any format.)

While the series is clearly a western, it truly defies classification because it incorporates many different and unexpected elements including science fiction, time travel, ghosts, the supernatural, comedy, amazing gadgetry and core morality issues that make it a truly unique and unforgettable viewing experience.

In the pilot, the saga begins simply enough when, "one of the greatest lawmen the West has ever known," U.S. Marshal Brisco County, Sr., (played by R. Lee Ermey) is on a train with other lawmen transporting outlaw John Bly and his evil Gang of 12, whom he had captured, to face justice. But, the tables are abruptly turned when the prisoners are freed and the Marshal is killed by Bly.

The Marshal's son, Brisco County, Jr., a Harvard graduate who earned a law degree, is hired as an unlikely bounty hunter by the members of San Francisco's Westerfield Club to track the outlaws down. Brisco straps on his father's gunbelt with its famed ivory-handled six-shooter, which he handles better than a western trick star, and never looks back.

Brisco, ably assisted by Comet the Wonder Horse (who has more intelligence than most people), meets a variety of friends and foes as he pursues his goal and also stumbles onto an incredible legend: the tale of a supernatural golden glowing orb that bestows unimaginable powers on the person who possesses it. Brisco soon realizes that Bly will stop at nothing to obtain the orb and wield it for his own diabolical purpose.

Campbell, who is perfectly cast, brought a warm, human depth to the character along with an inside wink to the audience underscoring life's absurdities. He also gave deadpan deliveries of puns laced with sexual and non-sexual overtones.

The primary cast includes Julius J. Carry III as James "Lord Bowler" Lonefeather, a rival bounty hunter packing a sawed-off shotgun strapped to his back who eventually became Brisco's best friend and "side-kick"; Christian Clemnson as Socrates Poole, the straight-laced Westerfield Club attorney befriended by Brisco and Bowler; Kelly Rutherford as Dixie Cousins, dance hall singer and Brisco's love interest; John Pyper-Ferguson as bungling outlaw Pete Hutter, in love with his six-shooter; John (Addams Family) Astin as brilliant, eccentric inventor Professor Albert Wickwire; and Billy Drago as the infamous Bly. There are also great and unexpected guest stars throughout including Terry Bradshaw, Sheena Easton, and Timothy Leary.

In addition to the two-hour pilot, episodes are: The Orb Scholar; No Man's Land; Brisco in Jalisco; Socrates' Sister; Riverboat; Pirates; Senior Spirit; Brisco for the Defense; Showdown; Deep in the Heart of Dixie; Crystal Hawkes; Steel Horses; Mail Order Brides; A.K.A. Kansas; Bounty Hunter's Convention; Fountain of Youth; Hard Rock; Brooklyn Dodgers; 'Bye Bly; Ned Zed; Stagecoach; Wild Card; And Baby Makes Three; Bad Luck Betty; High Treason Part I; and High Treason Part II.

Ironically, while the series was short lived its memorable theme song, composed by Randy Edelman, has been heard on NBC broadcasts of the World Series and the Olympic Games The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.: The Complete Series

The Adventures of Brisco County was one of the most creative productions on television. Each week, Brisco and his friends, the Mae West-like old flame Dixie Cousins (Kelly Rutherford), lawyer/ administrator Socrates Pool, the loyal and mad Prof. Wickwire (the brillant John "Gomez" Astin) and others take on the villains the "Old West" while keeping an eye on the future. The Harvard-educated bounty hunter teams up with his rival Lord Bowler (Julius Carry, Sho `Nuff for THE LAST DRAGON) to capture the Bly gang responsible for his father's death and much more. It is this clever combination of classic action, a touch of sci-fi, and a good dose of humor that make the series unique (example: bad guys who paint tunnels on rocks like a train-robbing coyote). So, take a minute or two and slip back into the wild & weird days of the old west - where riding, shooting, and fighting was the measure of a man - that and a square jaw, a talking wonder horse and outlaws from the future. The series was also loaded the Bruce Campbell's quirky humor and full of great anachronistic goofs on "coming things" loads of modern ideas and concepts quickly dismissed by the cast as impossibly unrealistic for the future (like Drive Thru-dining or hamburgers a.k.a "Cowpies") The series was groundbreaking in a relatively unique TV genre, the "Western-Indiana Jones-style-action-sci-fi-spoof" (there was "Best of the West" an 80's sit-com western and "The Wild, Wild West").

Here's the complete series episode breakdown, with some highlights:

1.)The PILOT

When U.S. Marshal Brisco County, Sr. is murdered by John Bly and his gang, the robber barons of San Francisco's Westerfield Club hire Brisco County, Jr. as a bounty hunter to round them up. Brisco meets a line-up unusual people along the way, including rival bounty hunter Lord Bowler, and the Westerfield Club's stuffy lawyer, Socrates Poole also Prof. Wickwire. He also learns of a mysterious ORB which John Bly (Billy Drago, reoccurring on Charmed) would do anything to possess, for the supernatural power it can give him.

2.) The ORB SCHOLAR

On X-Files, whic happen to run after Brisco, they had Mythos episodes that continue the continuity of the alien-cover-up storyline. In Brisco, episodes would spring up exploring the mystery of the ORB so desired by the murderer of Brisco County Sr. Here we learn more about the ORB, and of Brisco's destiny with it. Very good for such an early episode.

3.) NO MAN'S LAND

This one has little ORB continuity, but it does have a town propulated only by women, the Schwenke Sisters, and Professor Wickwire.

4.) BRISCO in Jalisco

Brisco and Socrates head to Mexico to recover some stolen guns. Brisco is in for a shock when Pete Hutter turns up as the thief, trying to sell them to a crooked General.

5.) SOCRATES' SISTER

`Nuff said. Prof. Wickwire invents his Amazing Innerspace Suit (a diver's suit) too.

6.) RIVERBOAT

Yep, you guessed it a gambling sting on riverboat. The invention of jeans, too.

7.) PIRATES!

Brisco & Bowler try to capture crazy land-pirate Blackbeard LaCutte, a wanted member of the Bly gang, who has stolen all of a town's supplies, including the medicine needed to save a sick boy (awe-say it ain't so).

8.) SENIOR SPIRIT

More Prof. Wickwire and the ghost of Brisco County Sr.

9.) BRISCO FOR THE DEFENSE

Brisco uses those lawyering skills we've heard so little about, to defend an old collage buddy.

10.)Showdown

Brisco & Bowler head to Brisco's hometown, to help an old girlfriend and her sheriff father stop a town takeover.

11.) DEEP in the HEART of DIXIE

Dixie and Brisco are on the run from a hitman and his gang. The superb David Warner makes a guest appearance.

12.) CRYSTAL HAWKS

Every bounty hunter in the West is out for Brisco for a crime he didn't commit, lead by lady bounty hunter Crystal Hawks played by Sheena Easton. Bly is in this one too.

13.) STEEL HORSES

Brisco & Bowler try to capture Bly gang member Juno Dawkins, and recover the prototype motorcycles he's stolen to use to intercept a government wagon transporting the mysterious ORB.

14.) MAIL ORDER BRIDES

The disturbing Swill Bros. have stolen the dowry of 3 mail order brides.

15.) A.K.A. Kansas

Brisco uses the alias of Kansas Wily Stafford, to infiltrate the ranks of an ex-Bly gang member and ex-husband of Dixie, with Dixie's help, ofcourse.

16.) BOUNTY HUNTER's CONVENTION

This is a take off of Agatha Christie's THE TEN LITTLE INDIANS. Its a mystery who-done-it in the classic sense, complete with an old hotel, thunderstorms, and secret passages.

17.) FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

Brisco vs. the Best-looking gang he's ever seen, while we learn Bly's true origin and purpose.

18.) HARD ROCK

A great episode! We get to meet Sheriff Aaron Viva (one of the best characters in the series), an Elvis knock off (get it Aaron Viva) that can eat as well as he can "use his stuff" in hand to hand action, this is one of hundreds of pop culture and rock references. Whip Morgan also shows up for the first time.

19.) The Brooklyn DODGERS

Brisco and Bowler help kids get to San Francisco and fight off the Johnnies.

20.) BYE BLY

A woman from the future helps Brisco in his final confrontation with Bly and the origin of the ORBs. Sets of the future of the series giving Brisco and Bowler a mission from the President himself.

21.) NED ZED

A run of the mill story is taking to another level by presenting the episode as a father and son reading a dime novel about Brisco and Bowler! Super! It's also got the old lumberyard gag and the machine gun.

22.) STAGECOACH

Brisco transports a lady spy to Mexico by stagecoach for a prisoner exchange, unaware that an assassin is already among them.

23.) WILD CARD

Brisco , Bowler and Whip Morgan try to help Dixie and her sister Dolly get back a casino which was swindled away from Dolly by a hood's son.

24.) AND BABY MAKES 3

Brisco, Bowler, Whip and Dixie protect the infant future Emperor of China, while foiling Peter Hutter's "diabolical" plans along with the idea for "Air Screw" from Da Vinci.

25.) BAD LUCK BETTY The introduction of another fun character Betty O' Donnell, while Brisco, Bowler and Whip investigate spooky goings-on. Meanwhile, the "rain bath" is invented just in time to spoof Psycho in a very familiar boarding house

Final 2 parter HIGH TREASON

After Brisco and Bowler are asked by the army to put together a team (including the Professor, Whip, Pete and Aaron Viva) to rescue a kidnapped young woman, they find that the situation is not as they were told, and soon find themselves accused of high treason. A crooked Colonel and General do their best to see that Brisco and Bowler are found guilty and executed and that's just the middle!! The second part features Terry Bradshaw leading an army of bounty hunters after Brisco and Bowler. These bounty hunters are played by real Cowboys, the NFL kind. Prof. Wickwire invents a Zeppelin airship, leading to lots more rock references. - Science Fiction - Comedy - Tv Series - Western'

Construction Staplers - construction staplers, stapler

Just bought a Senco SNS65 to do the siding, sheathing, soffit, facia, etc. on the house I am remodeling. It works great, plenty of power for both 1" and 2" staples. I'm using 1" rough cut siding on the log house and it drives through and flush every time. I'm glad I bought it. Senco SNS45XP 16-Gauge Construction Stapler

SENCO has been around a long time and it shows, it's a top of the line product. Well made, tough construction, lightweight, comfort plus, makes this product worth the money. It's depenability and craftmanship make the investment worthwhile.

I work in roofing and I used Porter Cable nailers for a long time. When my last Porter Cable nailer broke down on me in the middle of a job I went with Senco under the recomendation of my friend whom is also a roofer and a former construction worker. Ive had this stapler for almost 9 months now and it still amazes me every time I use it.

Fire rate is amazing. It honestly sounds like a machine gun and every staple it drives goes in correctly and without jams. Its really light and the handle is very comfortable. I can drive staples all day in plywood and not have a blister on my hand or have sore arms.

In the 9 months I have used it it has only jammed about three times, and those jams were when I changed brands of staples that had a really sticky and cheap varnish to them which caused the gun to go haywire.

My only gripes are that the front end spring that holds the driving assembly in place can get loose causing your gun to misfire. Simple solution for that though, just get some pressure pliers with a wide mouth and compress the spring enough to hold it in place. Also the finish on the piston head chamber can get really worn out really fast. But hey youre buying this tool for work not for looks right? The CFM required to use it is a little high but if you need the kind of power this gun delivers then you shouldnt really have a problem with that. If you need something more casual I suggest the SNS40

I highly recommend this nailer for all professional contruction workers, last a long time and when they do eventually break down its very cheap to fix.

I RECEINTLEY BOUGHT THIS GUN FOR NAILING OFF PLYWOOD. I COULDN`T BELIEVE THE SPEED IT WOULD SPIT OUT THE STAPLES; IT SOUNDED LIKE AN UZI. THIS IS MY FAVORITE AIRTOOL I HAVE BY FAR! I RECOMEND THIS GUN TO EVERY HOMEBUILDER!

I bought this nailer back in October of 2004 and since the the first day of use there has been nothing but trouble. It jammed on me many times before I realized it needed to be lubricated several times throughout the days time. It is now January and I went to use it on another job and it just didn't work at all, it is now in for service and I hope the warranty will cover the problems. - Pneumatics - Porter-cable - Construction Staplers - Stapler'

Mud Pie Baby Eieio Black And White Gingh... - baby clothing, baby girl

I was going to a baby shower for my soon-to-be new grand daughter. I had lots of little items, but no clothes and decided I'd like to get an outfit. I came across this one and knew it will meet my needs. I like the quality of Mud Pie items I have purchased in the past. I also liked the idea of having it a bit personal with the initial. I guess it will be difficult to pass on to another child, however, unless your family is one of those whose children's names all begin with the same letter! I was not disappointed when this arrived. It is so cute and girly. She's due the end of March, so she should be just the right size when it is warm enough to wear. Mud Pie Baby Girl Pink Initial Tunic Leggings and Hair Bow Set, Letter M, 0 - 6 Months

I have bought this outfit for two separate babies for baby showers and it's always a big hit! It will fit a baby around 10 pounds or so and is so cute if you already know what the name is going to be! - Baby Girl - Baby Hat - Baby Clothing - Dresses'

Notebook Sleeve - notebook sleeve, acer aspire one

I already have and very much like a slightly-larger version of this for my Dell Latitude D620 computer at work, so this was an easy purchase decision. My Eee PC 1000 already came with a similar neoprene case, but a big too big for the computer alone, yet not big enough to also hold the AC adapter and a mouse, plus no way to keep them from scratching the computer if I'd jammed them all in together.

The Caselogic LNEO-10 is just enough smaller to properly fit the 1000, with a separate zipped compartment that can accomodate both the AC adapter and a mouse. Though the result looks a bit lumpy, it works well. I also very much like the handles on the LNEO-10. They are comfortable in use, and easily fold out of the way when not in use. Case Logic LNEO-10 Ultraportable Neoprene Notebook/iPad Sleeve Fits 7 to 10.2-Inch Tablets (Black)

I picked up one of these cases for my EEE PC 1000h and it fits pretty close to perfectly. The pocket on the side is big enough to hold the power adapter and a mouse. The top handles are more useful than I would have thought, since I intended to mostly carry this case inside a messenger-style bag, but I've found it quite handy to just carry the computer in just this case. The case seems reasonably well padded, probably not enough to protect a laptop from a serious drop but enough to protect it from the occasional bump. The only thing I could ask for would be for a pocket on the other side. I'm pretty satisfied with this case.

I like the design, it's a pretty tiny case. I bought it following a recomendation for my Lenovo S10 that looks awesome in white color. So what I can not accept at first, is that the red cover inside the sleeve stains the charguer and cables that ARE WHITE. CASE LOGIC MUST HAVE TO CORRECT THIS SITUATION.

If you have a black or dark netbook you'll never realize about the stains, but what if you put a document inside?

I did not notice the external pocket when I made my purchase. I was surprised to see it.

EEE 1000 fits inside the main compartment well and the power adapter fits inside the other pocket. It is not as smooth and flat when the power adapter is put in the pocket, but it is convenient for grabbing everything as one set.

The Samsung NC10 fits nicely. Not a snug fit by any means, but close enough to keep it from flopping around in the case. The external pocket holds the NC10 power supply, Bluetooth mouse and has room left for two extra batteries, a small USB router and a couple of very small items like a flash drive. The pocket will be misshapen and lumpy, but all your stuff will be in one place.

The carrying handles are soft and easy to hold.

Overall construction is typical Caselogic: very well made.

I have one small lament: no loops for a shoulder strap. My opinion is that all carrying bags should have loops o shoulder straps.

Other than that small item (and it is indeed a lament, not a complaint), the Caselogic LNEO-10 Ultra-Portable Neoprene Notebook Sleeve is an inexpensive, durable and expandable way to carry and protect your netbook.

Jerry

After trying out several different cases/sleeves for my Toshiba NB205 and being disappointed with each, I stumbled upon this Case Logic Notebook sleeve. It has been an exceptional choice in that it stretches nicely and so will easily accommodate the 6-cell battery which extends out from the back of my netbook. The pocket on the front on the bag is just large enough to squeeze in a mouse and the charging cord for my computer, although it is very "lumpy" when everything is zipped in. It definitely helps to wind up the cord prior to storing it.

One of the nicest features of the bag is the handle. It is a well-built double handle that offers a secure way to carry the computer. This case would be perfect for any of the 10.1" netbooks.

This sleeve is superior to most because:

1) It is made by Caselogic (they make excellent accessories for computer items such as flash drives, memory cards, CD books and so much more. I have owned their product for several years and they are of superb quality. Hence I bought this and am delighted.

2) The outside pocket is a very big reason I bought this case and it holds: My mini retractable mouse, small mouse pad, and a small pouch with my flash drives.

Note that the power cord is somewhat bulky inside this sleeve, however, I fixed this problem by slipping my sleeve inside my ziptop briefcase and place the power cord inside the inside inner pocket. Then I am all set to go!

Also I found that this case has excellent padding for my Acer Aspire One netbook and am very pleased with it.

I recently bought one of these cases to try out on my new Toshiba Mini NB205-N330BN 10.1-Inch Sable Brown Netbook, which has the infamous "9-Hour Battery Bulge", making it difficult to fit in some standard cases. It fits perfectly. The case is small, and I confess to feeling a little self-conscious at times because of its similarity to a purse, but the neoprene protection is fantastic, and the stretchiness allows you to easily fit an additional mouse and/or power pack in the front pocket. Although it does look pretty lumpy when you do that.

It's such a solid build that I honestly don't think I'll ever need another one -- it really does feel like it's built to last. It's good enough that I immediately ordered one for my girlfriend, one for my mom, and one for my stepdad who all have Toshiba NB205 netbooks.

This is the perfect bag for my daughter's Acer computer. It fits perfectly and has a front zipped pocket for carrying cords. The neoprene fabric is an excellent, protective cushion for the computer, especially if she puts it in her bookbag for school. The handles make it portable, and if you want it in a brief case or pocketbook, it will fit there too. The bag is stylish - it does not look "fuddy duddy." I wish it came in more colors - I also got an Acer for Christmas, but I did not want the same color bag - it could get confusing!

I highly recommend it. - Acer Aspire One - Netbook - Case - Notebook Sleeve'

Black And Decker - 18v, dewalt battery

This charger has worked very well. I even left a weak older battery on it for a trickle charge for a couple of days with the light blinking (indicating a weak batter.) then I removed the battery and replaced it and let it attempt to charge at the normal level, and no more weak battery indicator. And yes, the battery was weak, it wasn't a faulty diagnosis the first time. DEWALT DC9310 7.2 -Volt-18 -Volt 1 Hour Charger

I have used this product for about a month now and I am impressed by the Performance and Design of this Dewalt battery charger. It's a plus that I can and do, now charge and maintain all my Dewalt and Black & Decker Pod Style batteries from 7.2 volt, all the way up to 18 volt. Which means I'll be able to up grade my cordless tools for a long time to come. Thanks.!!!!!

I've always been satisfied with the performance of my 18V Black & Decker Cordless Drill. Of course my biggest gripe is that unless you use them fairly frequently when you have the need after several months of sitting idle ALL NiCad batteries will go flat and need charging prior to use. I guess that's the price you pay for cordless convenience. Long story short...needed to use the drill, needed to charge the battery first, found the charger, stored securely in the case, suddenly wasn't working. What the heck??!! How can a battery charger that has seen absolutely no abuse, that has been stored properly suddenly and inexplicitly stop working?

Went online in search of a B&D replacement part and had a dickens of a time finding one until I came across the DeWalt which will work with the type of B&D battery I have. Based on reviews such as this one I ordered it through Amazon, received it quickly, and have been very pleased with it ever since. Superior to the B&D charger it replaced in every way. Much better construction, indicators that tell you the battery status, can leave the battery in the charger so that it's always ready(couldn't do that with the charger that it replaced) and if you decide to not leave the battery on charge long term it only takes an hour or less to be ready to go. The fact that the DeWalt charger can handle a range of battery voltages(7.2V-18V) is a plus if you have more than one voltage range in that style of battery, which I don't.

Based on my experience with the Dewalt Charger thus far, I can highly recommend it as a great replacement for anyone needing one for that style of battery. It's certainly superior to the B&D charger it replaced.

I bought this to replace the factory charger I got with my 12-volt B&D Firestorm. I had purchased a DeWalt 12-volt battery to use with the Firestorm and found that it worked well. I figured the DeWalt charger would work on the B&D batteries as well as the DeWalt. According to my research, this DeWalt charger would work with 12, 14.4 and 18 volt battery packs, providing flexibility in case I upgraded in the future.

The charger has successfully re-charged both my 12-volt batteries. It did not want to charge the DeWalt... it was far more discharged than the B&D battery. But I removed and re-inserted the "dead" battery in the charger a couple of times and finally the charger accepted and recharged the battery.

I am pleased with this unit so far.

Bought this to charge Black & Decker Firestorm batteries (PS130 / 12V) and (PS140 / 14.4V) and it works brilliantly. Doesn't burn out the first time you use it and actually charges the batteries (that Black & Decker's own chargers wouldn't).

I will never buy Black & Decker tools again and am a convert to DeWalt quality. It's DeWalt, Rigid and Ryobi for me from now on.

I am very unhappy with Max Tool. Bought this charger from Max Tool through Amazon. I purposely paid an additional $10 ($49) to get one that would be factory sealed and with the 1 year factory warranty. That was the writeup from Max Tool. I got what everyone else got only they got the lower price of $39.00, which was the charger thrown in a box with plain paper. Not sealed, no factory packaging no warranty. I don't advise that you purchase from MaX Tool.

This product revived my uncharagble damaged batteries. i bought this based on other reviews telling me that it had charged bztteries that had lost a cell. it works, try thisbefore you buy new batteries

I am VERY pleased with the DeWalt DC9310!

It works fast and it salvaged two VERY OLD, completely-drained, batteries (out of the three that I had).

I did not think any of them would take a charge again. My original charger was not able to restore them to a point of even taking a charge, but the DC9310 really did the job! - Battery Charger - Charger - Dewalt Battery - 18v'

Greatest Thing Ever - organizer, five star flex hybrid notebinder

I have purchased one of these notebooks every semester since I started college, and I am about to star my fourth year! I love these! The 5 subject notebooks are perfect if you are taking four or five classes and don't want to haul four or five notebooks across campus. Each subject divider has three pockets in it, absolutely perfect for holding all your important papers. I use one of the compartments for homework sheets, upcoming project rubrics, and anything else I need to do soon, etc. I use the compartment on the other side of the divider to hold returned tests and the class syllabus. Then I have plenty of pages of regular notebook paper to take all my notes on and keep together. I have also found it's very convenient to have things for every class with you, so when you get extra time in the day and need to study or work on another assignment for a different class, it's all there when you need it!

I'm very hard on notebooks and I have never had an issue with pages ripping, the spiraling coming undone, the dividers coming out or anything else that typically happens with other notebooks. Great product! My only problem is that I am having trouble finding this exact notebook in stores, and this is why I am purchasing online today. Five Star Advance Notebook, 5-Subject, 200-Count, College Ruled, Blue (72323)

This notebook has been great to use in grad school for my 5 subjects. It prevents me from leaving behind the wrong notebook for the day's classes like I occasionally did before, and is convenient because everything I need to reference is in one place. It is well built, seems very durable, and is a manageable size. The thick plastic cover and tabs make it very durable and I can see it easily lasting a full semester of college or whole year for a high school student. The tab dividers for subjects make organization easy and I love the built-in pockets for each subject that allow for storage of handouts etc. I'll be buying another one for next semester and wish I had used this for my first semester rather than having multiple different notebooks that I easily loose track of.

The notebook is wider by about an inch than my single subject notebooks which I like because it gives more space for note taking and diagrams. It is fairly thick if size is a concern (I'd guess 1.5 inches) but it is a 5 subject notebook after all. The ring binding is covered with fabric so it doesn't snag on your bag and there is a convenient pen loop on the front. The pages are perforated for easy tearing which is a plus.

This is my favorite notebook I'm a college senior and this is the notebook I swear by. It allows me to keep all of my classwork and notes in one spot. It holds up all semester and I love the holder for a pen. Overall great purchase and a lot cheaper than buying it from a bookstore.

But someone out there found a way. My notebook has one section with ALL OF THE PAGES BOUND UPSIDE DOWN. As well as having only TWO pages between one of the sets of dividers (and I don't have any classes that will be that light in notes, regrettably). I would go elsewhere for this product, shame on you, seller.

This is a great notebook. I use it for drawings of all the jobs I estimate. One of them usually lasts me about a year, so that is alot of abuse and this handles it perfectly. I sure hope they don't stop making them!

my kids only like this brand. The other brands are cheap and fall apart. Their favorite part of this one is the individual folders for each subject. They are just the right size for their school papers to fit into.

A lot of people think that if you want to be a good writer, you need to buy a Moleskine notebook. This is not true!

Many great works were written between the pages of good-old five star - The Great Gatsby, The US Declaration of Independence, Hamlet just to name a few.

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about buying a notebook online, after all there's nothing quite like that new textbook smell to start off a new semester - am I right? However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Amazon's perfect packaging allowed it to retain its pleasant fragrance.

Little known fact, "Five Star" is the highest rating the Micronesian royalty can bestow upon a good, and Mead has certainly done a lot to earn and retain this rating over the years.

The company says it is Five Stars, but I have come to notice that over my lasting time with this single-spiral notebook (3 years, six months, and 13 days), that there has become a depleting space issue. I have encountered this with all of the Five Star notebooks; resulting in a maximum limit to only three or even two subjects. I have counted and I have counted again, and there still remains to be two-hundred and 2 pages to this notebook. I have also found that the lack of versatility in this notebook restricts various uses for these sheets of paper (E.G. grocery list, paper airplanes, cootie catchers, etc.). I am only in class to take notes for two semesters; what am I suppose to do with this paper weight for the Summer and other breaks? I would have given this very limited product zero stars, but Five Star fears anything less than five stars. I would not recommend it to anyone who is serious about paper or enjoys paper, not just by taking notes.

*Buyer beware: this notebook is not governed by ANY university or college board. Always make sure it is not a misleading product.*

Air Mattress Pump - air mattress pump, air pump

I purchased this pump for use on my inflatable kayak, but this would be a godsend for anyone with lots of floats to blow up at the pool or beach. I especially like the deflate feature which allows you to remove all the air quickly so that you can fold up your float. Inflation and deflation are really fast with this pump. Coleman 12-Volt DC QuickPump

It does what it is designed to do, and pretty quickly. However, I should have read the product description more closely; I assumed that the car plug-in was a bonus feature, not the only means of powering the pump! So to blow up an air mattress for an incoming houseguest, I had to drag the mattress to and from the garage. No big deal, my fault, just took me by surprise. I have since bought a $2 wall outlet-to-car plug converter so that I can inflate it indoors.

The pump works fine off my car's 12v power socket. But I should have looked at power converters before I bought. If you want to inflate a Coleman bed inside as well as camping, I realized after the fact that it's much cheaper to get a decent quality inverter that converts automotive dc power to AC than vice versa. So while the pump works fine off car power for camping, I'll have to inflate the mattress outdoors for home use. I'd recommend buying the AC-powered pump and then a 12v to ac adapter for the car. That way you could run the air pump, your cell phone charger, laptop or anything else that plugs into an AC outlet in your car too. Wish I'd thought that through before I bought.

We are so glad we got this pump for our inflatable kayak. Thank you, Amazon recommendations.

We've used this about 3 or 4 times so far. It's straightforward and easy to use. Plug it into the cigaratte lighter of your car, attach the appropriate nozzle thing (there are 2; I don't know whether there are standardized hole sizes for inflatable objects or something, but they fit perfectly), then turn it on. You can tell when the object is fully inflated because the pump gets louder. Oh, the pump is pretty loud, maybe as loud as a dustbuster. Not an issue for us as we've always used it outdoors.

Probably even cooler than the fact that it inflates is that it also deflates. Have you ever tried to fully deflate an air mattress manually? Or a kayak? It's maddening. I wish my air mattress' inflater were also a deflater, because no amount of body contortions and patience ever seems to fully deflate the bed, which makes the bed harder to fold and store, etc. Same went for our kayak when we took the deflater for granted. It's just so worth it.

I think the only issue with this pump is that it feels kinda cheap. It's plastic-y and really light, neither of which is actual criteria for gauging quality, really, but I'm just putting it out there FWIW. We haven't had a problem with it, and it does what it's supposed to do.

Pros:

Works fast, moves a decent amount of air.

Does a good job of filling most rafts and inflatable kayaks to 80% capacity. You should top it off with a good hand pump anyway.

Deflate port for getting air out quick.

Cons:

LOUD. They are all loud, but this one really screams like a vacuum cleaner on steroids.

No hose. Pump must be held right up against the valve the entire time.

Boston valve adapter is not tight enough, has some blow by.

Power cord is very short. About 9 feet. Good if you cut the cord and put on alligator clips, but inconvenient if you want to use a power port on your dashboard. You end up right next to and under the door with a big raft or mattress.

The directions say to have a 15-20amp fuse in your car's power tap. Most cars will have a ten amp. Putting in a 15 or 20 amp will cause a problem and will not be covered by your cars warranty if you then fry your car wiring. Do NOT put a bigger fuse in there. EVER. Later in the directions it says a ten amp fuse is fine. As if they can't make up their mind. For the record, running this pump for 20 minutes straight it was just fine with a ten amp fuse.

Overall, a good pump for the money. Less than $15 and does the job it was intended to do. You take the noise and the poor connectors when you go this inexpensive. It still works fine. I think Coleman should extend the cord at least five more feet and add alligator clips as a snap on attachment for clipping right to a battery.

This is an excellent pump for high flow and low pressure applications like a floating inner tube, raft or inflatable kayak. It should work great for beach balls, too. I adapted my hand pump hose to fit this pump by putting a couple turns of electrical tape on the hose end. There is a long 12V cord that fits car outlets. I've only used it for a couple days, so later I can report the reliability.

==> It's been over a year now and I've used it about a dozen times. Still works great. I even bought a second one for my son-in-law this year (2010) and likes it also.

This worked for basically one summer. We used it on vacation in August of 2005 to inflate a few items, then we used it again in June and July of 2006 and in mid-July it stopped working completely and we had to throw it away.

Lighting Controller - home automation, zwave

I have installed over 20 of the GE 2-way dimmers with zero problems. However, these 3 ways were a complete pain to install. I got a voltmeter and figured out the wiring exactly. But, no matter what I did the lights would not reach full brightness unless the aux switch was held down. They also flickered enough to give you a seizure. I had them like this for almost a month... I tried everything, insulating the yellow wire, using different travelers, switching switch locations, trying new switches... I was about to give up and eliminate the aux switch and use a 2 way. But then reading a forum online I finally found the secret to making these things work!!!!!

WIRE THE WHITE WITH RED STRIPE WIRE ON THE AUX SWITCH TO NEUTRAL!!!!!

This immediately fixed all of the issues I had with these switches!!!! They work great now and I am very happy. I would give the switches 5 stars... But, you can't ignore the crappy instructions. The fact that it took several months to figure out how to get these to work is ridiculous; But, now that they work they are great!

This forum has a ton of info on wiring and is where I found the secret to getting these things working:

[...] GE 45613 Z-Wave Technology 3-Way Dimmer Switch Kit

I am now returning my second GE Z-wave 3-way dimmer switch set and I'm not going to try another. The auxilliary switch didn't work with either set. The downstairs main switch is fine, dims up and down as expected. The auxiliary switch, installed upstairs, turns the overhead light on, but can't turn it off. Instead, once lit, the overhead just flashes a little brighter when tapping the top or bottom of the toggle. The instructions were confusing so I had an electrician install the switches. He couldn't get it to work, even after I called him back a second time. I called GE customer service who said it was defective and return to Amazon. Looks like my new unit is "defective", too. So much for going with the "big name" brand.

I purchased this product (GE 45613 Z-Wave Technology 3-Way Dimmer Switch Kit) last week and spent an entire weekend (~12 hrs) figuring out how to get this working. Firstly, the instructions are garbage. Besides the circuit diagram, it helps an average Joe in no way. It's more or less for a qualified electrician to install. Regardless, I managed to install the switches in my staircase, but at first the auxiliary switch wasn't controlling the dimmer properly. I gave up and finally decided to call an electrician. He was very confident and claimed he has installed switches like these before. So he was able to install the switch, infact, he did the same installation as I did, but I just didn't have the patience to really play around with it to see it working. Anyway, so after the switches installed and they were in conjunction, I soon after realized that the lights were not at full brightness. Like the reviewer before for this product said, when you tapped and held the auxiliary switch, the lights will go to full brightness, but as soon as you let go of it, it will go to about 70% of its full brightness. I thought maybe after syncing it with the remote control, it'll go to full brightness, but that didn't help either. After the full weekend of frustration, I finally took of the switches and was thinking of burning them, but I thought why waste $$$ on such a useless product. It's not worth the $$$ to waste!

On the contrary, I have GE's 2-way ZWave switch (GE 45606 Z-Wave Technology 2-Way Dimmer Switch), and so far it works flawlessly. Literally, plug and play.

Had some doubts about purchasing this set after all the bad reviews but its worked out fine.

The wiring for these switches is very different from the existing 3-way setup in our home.

You do need to find a neutral at the aux switch end

Once I drew up the new wiring diagram it was easy to modify the existing lines to make these work. I needed to take the HOT wire from the old switch and hook it to one of the old traveler lines as the main switch needs to be at the load end. The other existing traveler becomes the sole wire between the new switches.

All worked fine first time.

The manual could do a better job of pointing out how to modify existing wiring but the reviews here helped a lot, thanks guys.

I'm having the same problem that the other reviewers had, which is that the light does not reach full brightness, except while the auxiliary switch is held down. I called the support number, and they told me this is a known problem, which they think has to do with the distance between the primary and auxiliary switches. But their engineers are still working on debugging it. (How long have they been selling this?) They customer support representative suggested I exchange the product for a different brand. (At least they didn't have me try a bunch of useless troubleshooting steps.)

I do not agree with the other reviewers about the manual though. It's fine. That's not enough to give it more than one star, though.

Amazon should stop selling this product, since it has a defective design, and the manufacturer acknowledges it.

I absolutely love these switches and their capability to be controlled via remote. Thou I also had NUMEROUS problems with the installation of these switches. As I ran into issues since I was replacing a "traditional" 3-way circuit with dimming capabilities. By "traditional" I mean that my lights were wired in the most common configuration which consists of four wires at each switch; one ground, 2 travelers (one acting as a "hot"), and either a line-in or load-out; while the neutral is located elsewhere in the circuit. (In other words it was exactly like the image labeled "Typical 3-way circuit" on page 5 of the manual included with these GE switches.)

In my case the neutral wire was easily accessible in one of the gang-boxes. So given the neutral wire's location, this is the box in which I was required to install the primary switch (the one with five wires). Thou in order be have a neutral wire available to connect with the primary switch I had to add an additional wire to point where the neutral wires bypassed the original switches, and I used this "new" neutral wire to connect with the neutral wire on the primary switch.

From this point I had to determine the flow of electricity from the auxiliary switch through the primary switch and onto the lights, also known as the "load" (I would highly recommend drawing out the circuit so you don't get confused and can easily reference it if you need to). After figuring out the configuration of the circuit I attached the line-in (also known as the "hot" or common wire and usually black) to the black wire of the auxiliary switch. At this point I was left with the two traveler wires from the previous configuration; in my case one was red and the other was white with black sharpie/tape (which indicated that it was NOT being used as a neutral).

Knowing that the primary switch would require a "hot" wire in the other location, I decided to use the white/taped wire in a similar manner to which it was previously utilized. So at the point where the line-in wire and the black wire, from the auxiliary switch, would be connected using one twist connector I also attached the white/taped wire by screwing all three wires into on connector (this would allow the white/taped wire to serve as a "hot" wire running the primary switch, as the current is able to bypass the auxiliary switch).

Given my decision to use the white/taped wire as a "hot", I was left with the red wire to serve as the single "Traveler" wire (though this could have been reversed as long as I knew which wire was which when connecting the primary switch). So I connected the yellow wire from my auxiliary switch to the red wire using a twist connector. And of course I attached the green wire to a ground wire; thou this should always be the first connection made during installation.

In the second location, where the primary switch HAD to be installed; I found the red "Traveler" wire and white/taped (hot) wire coming from the auxiliary switch in addition to the newly created "neutral" wire and the black/load/hot wire running out and to the lights. So I started by connecting the green wire from the primary switch to the ground wire. I then connected the white wire to the neutral wire, which I had previously created. Next I connected the tiny yellow wire to the red "Traveler" wire and the black wire (from the primary switch) to the white/taped (hot) wire. This left me with the Blue/load wire which was connected with the black (load/line-out) wire running to the lights.

After installing the switches in this configuration, everything seemed to work fine so I installed the switches into the gang boxes. After this I noticed that the lights could not be made to achieve full brightness and that they would actually flicker. Knowing that often a flicker means a bad connection exists somewhere in the circuit, I removed the switches from the gang boxes in order to check the tightness of the connections. Once I removed the switches I noticed that both of my problems were improved immediately, and that all of the connections were in fact tight/good.

Since everything appeared to be working correctly I placed the switches back into their respective boxes, after which I began noticing the same problems/issues. It was only after I removed the primary switch a second time that I came to the realization that the problems were actually being caused by inference with the tiny yellow wire. In fact if you apply pressure to (squeeze) this wire with your fingers it will actually cause the lights to change brightness.

Ergo I concluded that the post-installation problems are a result of the size of the yellow wire, as it is either too large of a gauge, not well enough insulated, or both (just an FYI wiring gauge is opposite than one would assume, that is the smaller the gauge the larger the wire).

In order to rectify this and fix the problems I spliced a replacement wire (of the same gauge/size as the other wires) in place of the smaller yellow traveler; though I would have preferred to completely replace the wire but I do not have a Soldering Iron. Since I could not completely replace the wire I created a splice as close to the back of the switch as possible, while leaving enough wire available to allow the use of an Insulated Butt Connector Terminal (which would also serve to insulate the little wire remaining as I placed it tight against the back of the switch) . I then used this replacement wire to connect to the red "Traveler" wire. This seemed to fix all of the problems I was experiencing, as I virtually removed the small yellow wire and replaced it with what I have determined to be a more appropriately sized and insulated wire. - Zwave - Dimmer - Home Automation - Lighting Controller'

I bought the package with the Dremel 750-02. Even if purchased alone well worth the $12. Read my review on the Dremel 750-02. The variety of bits for quick small fixes are well worth it!...

Definately a 5 star item with nice case. Keep it in your pantry along side the wireless...it really comes in handy! Dremel 687-01 52-Piece General Purpose Rotary Tool Accessory Kit With Case

Really - i had priced this out for a lot higher + tax at stores near my house.

this kit has a good general mix.

i bought (3) when it had a special on amazon..

glad to own.(P.S. WORKS WITH CRAFTSMAN BRAND)

Bought this to use on my dogs nails, he is very nervous about nail trimming it is very quite and does a good job of trimming the nails down. It works ten times better than pedi-paws. I would recommend this for your pets nail trimming.

I use this kit with my Dremel 686. Of course, Dremel makes all kinds of accessories for their tools, but this is a good starting point. There are different accessories for different jobs. If you can't find what you need here, you can always find an accessory that suits your needs.

This 52-piece kit is a great starting block for any Dremel owner.

I used the included reinforced cutting wheel to cut through heat-treated .65" chromoly handlebars and it still has life left. I also used the included aluminum-oxide cone-shaped grinding stone to grind about 1.5 mm of 7075 T-6 aluminum from a sprocket and that also still has life left. Very high-quality bits, definitely recommended. - Dogs - Running - Attachments - Rotary Tool Accessories'

Easy To Use - easy to use

The instructions were a little challenging, but when you get this thing figured out, it works well. Now that I know how to use it, I will use it regularly to keep my chains sharp. I heat my home with wood and this is a lot easier than using a file. Ken Buffalo Tools ECSS Electric Chainsaw Sharpener

Wow! This machine does a great job! Considering how little I had to invest in this sharpener, it has saved me a ton to time and money. No more dropping off chains at the shop for sharpening. Now I can charge my buddies! Very satisfied.

I am an older lady that likes to work in the woods with a chainsaw, and have always dreading hitting a rock or dirt, dulling my saw. When my husband was alive, it wasn't a problem, as he could sharpen it for me, but I have tried to sharpen my own in the past, but never could do it right. I just purchased this sharpener, and sharpened my chain for the first time today. It took me awhile, but after getting the "hang of it", it was absolutely wonderful. It took very little time and does a wonderful job. This will save me time, money and frustration to say the least. I couldn't be happier with a product.

As stated in previous reviews, the instructions for this sharpener aren't very clear. However, once you become familiar with its operation, this sharpener really works well. Easy to use and gets great results. Very affordable price and solidly constructed. Highly recommended.

This is rather long. But I do feel it is well worth the read.

Just as some of the others, I found the instructions leaving me wondering. Also, the pictures of the various examples in the directions are very small. You will need a magnifying glass to see those pictures.

But once you get the hang of using this device, it is a breeze.

Here are a few tips:

(1) there is a second component of this machine that has numbers on a dial. These numbers represent various angles to sharpen your chain.

The specific angle you set this to will be found in the literature that comes with your chain. For example, I have a Poulan Chain Saw. I use Oregon, S56 chains. The literature that comes with it tells me the angle for sharpening the teeth is 30 degrees. So, that is the number I rotate this component to and set it.

(2) you will have to sharpen each tooth in the chain. This machine does not automatically pull the chain through and sharpen each one. If some of you were thinking the sharpening was automatic welcome to the club. I thought so also. No question, this is quite tedious work. But when you have finished you will have a very sharp chain that cuts just as if it were new.

So, after sharpening one tooth, you will have to manually pull the chain to enable the next tooth to be in position to be sharpened. In moving from one tooth to the next, you will notice the next tooth is

on the other side of the chain, across from the previous one. So, in order to sharpen the next tooth, you will have to rotate the wheel in the other direction to the same corresponding angle number on the wheel in order for the grinder to be in proper position to sharpen that tooth.

You will know where to position the tooth because you will want the grinding disc to come down, just butting up with that tooth. Don't worry. You will see how this is all done, once you sharpen a couple of teeth. The only problem I thought I had was to somehow mark my beginning point with the first tooth, so I would know when I had sharpened all of them.

This is what I thought, anyway. However, that was not the case at all.

You will know when you have reached the last tooth to sharpen because you will see the polished, fresh metal on each tooth you have sharpened, as opposed to the dull finish of an unsharpened tooth.

(3) the direction you put the chain in the slot that holds it while the teeth are being sharpened is in the opposite the direction the chain goes on the chain saw. At least, I think I am correct on this.

(4) if you are going to attach to a table, make certain your chain will hang freely underneath and be able to be manually rotated.

I decided to bolt my chain saw sharpener to a cinder block, instead of a table or vise. Then I put 4 more cinder block underneath it, so it would be appropriate height. Or put the cinder block on a table.

This worked out quite well. Only thing was I had to find about a 4 inch to 4.5 inch bolt long enough to go through the foot of this device and the cinder block, on the front of the device.

I used regular toilet seat bolts for the other two bolts for the back.

The 4 inch to 4.5 inch bolt has to have the same head as the original bolt. You will see why this is, when you take a look at the original bolt that comes with it. You will have to loosen two Phillips screws to

get to that bolt.

If you are going to use a cinder block to attach the sharpener, as I did, you will have to knock out a portion of the cinder block with a cold chisel, so the chain will hang such that it will be able to be

manually moved through the holder.

Now, my chain saw sharpener is portable. All I have to do is get my 2 wheel, push truck and I can take it any where I want where there is electricity.

(5) when you press the button on the machine for it to start sharpening, I believe you want the grinding wheel to just touch the angle of the tooth. This will produce a few sparks.

It doesn't take much to sharpen each tooth. Hold the handle down, until there are no more sparks. This will indicate that tooth has been sufficiently sharpened.

Wow! This machine really sharpens! I just used it. It really works!

No more taking my chain saw to a shop for them to charge me $15, just to do something I can do myself.

This sharpener is going to save me a lot of money and time. And for the money it was definitely a very good buy.

Whenever it comes time to purchase new chains, I will keep a record of how long they last from now on, using my new sharpener.

Really happy I bought this.

Hope I have helped someone with my thoughts.

Shoulder Strap Bag

I bought this purse because I love the style of using it over the shoulder or as a backpack. I had other purses that fit this description and loved them. When I first got this purse, I was surprised at the thinness of the material, but thought it would be okay. I loved it until the zipper pull began to break under normal use and finally the entire zipper broke. It's only April! This purse did not even last 6 months- or for that matter not even 3 months. I am very disappointed! Embassy Solid Genuine Lambskin Leather Hobo Sling/Backpack Purse

I wanted a leather backpack, and I saw the picture, and thought why not? I received 2 other backpacks for Christmas that where designer, and did not like them at all. I love the one I purchased myself. It is soft and the base opens out like I needed it too. Just great!!!

Like another reviewer, I too was struck by how flimsy this bag looks and feels in person. It indeed looks quite sturdy in the photo. The back vertical pocket is basically useless. I'm still using my old beat-up backpack purse because it's better than this one. I do, however, take credit for making a bad purchase. I thought maybe there was more to the purse than was said. Nope. Like Mama told ya, "You better shop around!"

The bag was cute and held everything I needed it to. I had it for about two week when both straps broke. I have had bags for more than two years that are fine but this one did not last two weeks. I was so dissapointed.'

British Murder Mysteries

The Kurt Wallander novels, authored by Henning Mankell, are quite popular in Europe but rather less well known in the US. "Wallander-Series I" brings to television and DVD the dramatization of three of the novels. Wallander, portrayed by veteran and gifted Irish actor Kenneth Branagh, is a detective on the police force of the gritty seaside town of Ystad in Sweden. He is a borderline physical and psychological burnout case, who has lost his sense of detachment from his cases and takes everything far too personally. At the same time, he is a brillant sleuth with an ability to make intuitive connections between seemingly unrelated cases. Assisted by his staff and supported by a faithful daughter, he manfully plugs away at some rather unorthodox cases.

"Sidetracked" opens with a brilliantly staged scene in which Wallander fails to prevent a young woman from self-immolation in a sunlit field of flowers. He is also beset by a series of murders in the local art business, and by the health issues of his estranged father. Only Wallander can see the connections, which lead to a deadly sex ring and a surprising killer.

"Firewall" opens with the seemingly senseless murder of a taxi driver by two young women. As other bodies start to pile up, Wallander picks at a strange statement by one of the two young women, who escapes from police custody and then is herself horribly murdered. Wallander's persistance leads him to an unorthodox terrorist plot, and a betrayal by a friend.

"One Step Behind" involves Wallander in the deaths of several young persons who were connected with a midsummer's eve celebration. Additional deaths lead Wallander into a wider case in which the police seem constantly one step behind the killer or killers.

This series was filmed in Sweden, which makes for some beautiful location shooting. The sets are contrasted with some grim social rot in Swedish society, as exemplified by the gritty portrayal of Ystad society. Wallander's crew, all British actors, provide low-key support to Branagh's haggard and unshaven lead detective. His personal suffering over each case and over a personal life seemingly in shambles, imparts a gray tone to the stories that may be unsettling to some viewers. However, the stories are intricately plotted and thrillingly concluded; Branagh carries the day in a fascinating portrayal. This series is very highly recommended to fans of PBS Masterpiece Mystery looking for something different in a police procedural. Wallander: Sidetracked / Firewall / One Step Behind

I have seen this DVD about 30 times! After reading all the Henning Mankell Wallander mysteries, I ordered it from Amazon UK and switched my computer to Region 2. Boy was it worth it. Fantastic actors and crew. The high quality of the production is unmatched. Branagh won several awards for this series already, both for acting and producing. They are set to create three more this summer, again based on the magnificent books by Henning Mankell. There are two DVDs in the box. One has show 1 and 2 on it. The other DVD has Show 3 and then a ton of wonderfully produced specials. These include a fantastic and long chat between Kenneth Branagh and Henning Mankell. Mankell is delighted with the series and you will be too!!

After The Inspecor Lynley series, this has already become my favorite installment of PBS's Masterpiece Mystery. Having heard about but not read the internationally successful mystery series from Henning Mankell, I come at this clean, so to speak, with no preconceptions of how Wallander is supposed to be, or how the mysteries unfold. While its origins may be Swedish, it very much has a British feel to the series featuring Kenneth Branagh, and a mood all its own. In short, it is quite fantastic.

Like many of the better installments on PBS's Masterpiece Mystery, there is an intelligence here, and a deliberate choice of substance over flash. It makes for mystery as much about the characters as the plot. The tone is somber, and Branagh gives a subtle performance of a detective throwing himself in his work, because he's numb from events in his private life. Wallander appears to almost sleepwalk through his life when we first get acquainted with him. He feels responsible for a young girl's horrific death in the opening moments of Sidetracked, which sets the tone for the series. The image of her setting herself on fire in a field haunts him and drives him to discover why.

Meanwhile, the director slowly shows Wallander's private life. He lives with his grown daughter, who basically takes care of him when he comes home because he's a mess. Emotionally frozen from events in his real life, picking up the phone at home is a big deal for him, because it is someone who knows him, rather than about work. He is an excellent detective, yet nearly paralyzed outside the lines which form that perimeter. Each installment is balanced by a riveting mystery and layers of Wallander's private life are slowly pealed away. In Firewall, for instance, his daughter Linda (Jeany Spark) attempts to get him to "move on" after his marriage has failed by enrolling him in an internet dating site. At the same time, the murder of a taxi driver by two young girls and ominous words about it not even mattering lead him to a plot that will create utter chaos around the globe if he can't put a stop to it. How these two stories intersect is poignant and devastating for Wallander and the viewer.

Wallander's relationships with his daughter, his artistic father who may have deeper problems than he realized and many other things round out a portrait of a man who is his work because it's all he has to hang on to. Branagh is magnificent as he is rumpled in his interior rather than his exterior, and manages to convey this. The mysteries are deeply involving and intelligent, and a cast which includes Sarah Smart, Sadie Shimmin, Tom Hiddleston, and Tom Beard are well played. But there is no doubt this is Branagh's show, as this is about Wallander. The direction and look of the show fit with the character of Wallander so that he seems to fit into this world. Or is it that this is how his world is? It may not grab those looking for flash, but those who find intelligence and character development in their mysteries preferable will eat this up. A fine installment of PBS's Masterpiece Mystery.'
