Handloading Equipment - handloading equipment, reloading book

This is the book I used when I got started reloading about 10 years ago, and this book gave me just what I needed. When I first got the itch to load my own ammunition, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information and terminology involved in this fascinating field/hobby. It was very difficult to take all the individual pieces of information that I had and form it into an understandable process. I was snowed in under a blizzard of data that I was piecing together through chat rooms and web sites. Everyone was very helpful - basically shooters are the most helpful people I know - but still I was just getting fragments without a solid, complete overview. Phrases like "roll crimp", "seating and sizer dies," and "headspace" came at me in a blizzard. I could look up each phrase, understand each one as a piece, but still the whole picture was fuzzy. In essence, that is what this book will do for you: turn it all into a coherent, linear whole. The writing is very solid and clear, the illustrations are well done and helpful, and the information is very complete. After reading this book, the entire process made sense to me, and more importantly, I was fully warned about the does and don'ts of the reloading world. The coverage is very complete. Primers, powders, bullets and cases are explained with regard to nomenclature and history. All necessary tools and accessories are discussed and explained. This is just a great book. It won't make you an expert (only actual reloading for years will do that), but it will put you on the right road if you wish to become one. --Mykal Banta The ABCs Of Reloading: The Definitive Guide for Novice to Expert

I've been reloading for about 15 years for everything from practical pistol to NRA highpower, hunting loads for military surplus guns and everything in between. I have the reloading manuals put out by reloading equipment manufacturers (such as Lyman and Lee) as well as those put out by powder and bullet manufacturers (e.g. Speer, Accurate). So compared to a beginner, I am a fairly advanced reloader. Nevertheless, I always want to know more, get new ideas, and so forth.

This book is comprehensive in that it puts forth a great deal of information relevant to reloading rifle, pistol and shotgun. But it doesn't just cover the basics -- it also goes into a great deal of depth on subjects not covered in other reloading manuals.

One example is one of the most perplexing questions facing a new handloader: when the powder manufacturer gives a particular "starting" and "maximum" load for a given bullet weight, and the bullet manufacturer gives different information ... whose do you use?

This book also describes practically every imaginable piece of equipment you might want, goes into important detail about concepts such as "headspace" and includes specific advice for handloading for different purposes such as big game hunting or varminting.

I recommend this book highly for both beginning and experienced reloaders. For beginners, it will allow you to start with a level of knowledge that would ordinarily take years to acquire. For more experienced reloaders, it gives valuable information on the peculiarities of some of the new cartridges and bullet offerings.

This book is well worth its price and then some -- it belongs on your bookshelf if you are considering reloading.

Why do I give this book 4 stars, but still give a critical statement about it in the title of my review. Well, for starters, this book is written in magazine style as I call it. The author typically puts out a lot of information in the style of a magazine article. What this means is that as problems crop up, you are ushered to a purchasable solution at your local store. Why is this NOT a good writing style, because it costs you unnecessary money and shows a gross lack of thought and research on the part of the author. It is almost like the author did a lot of research, but has not had a lot of practical experience on the subject that he writes about.

What I did not like about the book at hand was that it recommended full length resizing of the cartridge casing (fine if you are using it in an automatic rifle, NOT necessary at all if you are using a bolt action rifle). Full length resizing stresses the cartridge too much, compared to neck sizing it. This leads to premature cartridge casing failure (if you do not periodically ANNEAL the cartridge case neck) Annealing is NEVER mentioned in the book. What the author recommends is full length cartridge case resizing, no annealing, inspect casing for damage, discard damaged (which could have been prevented by ANNEALING). Thanks, more stuff to BUY. Us old guys neck size cartridges and anneal them every 4th or 5th loading to preserve our brass. BUY is a word used by marketing driven magazine writers, NOT old reloaders who know their stuff. Further more, Once a cartridge is fired in a rifle it has had its headspace perfectly adjusted for that gun. Just neck size it and periodically anneal it by standing the cases up in a pan of water and heating the neck red hot before knocking them over. Then deprime, neck size, reprime and reload them. Cases can last a lot longer and shoot a lot more accurately if this procedure (not mentioned in the book) is followed.

In the books defense, it is a decent read and will give you a lot of good information about reloading your own bullets.

Happy reading, Darian Paganelli

This book came highly recommended by members of a forum on reloading. I was not disappointed. I will recommend it myself. The book covers the bases and is easy to read. You will need to add other books to your library, ( such as load data for specific calibers ) but this is a very good place to start.

Now I believe over the years the editor of this book has changed. I have a 6th edition. Chapters in the book are written by different authors, however, the editors did a wonderful job of putting together information that will make you feel a lot more confident about reloading.

The book covers everything from casting bullets, to the differences of powders. And since it is not about just one companies products, suggestions like the homemade powder dipper, abound. It also explains such facts as why working out your own loads for your own guns will give you better accuracy. And gives an in-depth look at how to tell if a bullet case is bad and shouldn't be used. And it is much more readable than a manual.

I also recommend getting a copy of Learn Handgun & Rifle Reloading in Under 41 Minutes: 2007 Edition. This is the only video I've found that covers every step in the reloading process, so you can see what the manuals are talking about. With both the book and the video you'll not only understand what you are doing but know exactly how to do it. - Ammunition - Handloading - Reloading Book - Handloading Equipment'

Electric Staple Gun - staple gun, electric

Pros:

-Safety. Great safety feature which is a small clip where the staple comes out. The stapler will only shoot the staple if the clip is depressed, and it will only be depressed when you have it in place to staple something.

-Dual Purpose. Stapler / brad nail gun. I only used the staple feature, but I'm sure the brad nail feature works fine as well.

-Electric. You don't need the getup involved in having an air gun. Plug it into any outlet and go.

-Performance. When I pressed firmly down on the wood I was stapling, the staples would sink all the way down most of the time. This was really a 4 out of 5, because if you didn't press quite firmly, it wouldn't sink the staple all the way. I was stapling into southern pine, which is a softer wood. I don't think it would have performed as well with a harder wood like oak. I'd have liked a stronger gun which would sink the staple all they way regardless of how hard I pressed, or what wood I was stapling into, but then for $25, I can't complain too much.

-Specs. Compare this electric stapler to other electric staplers. They are 120V, 10 Amp, 60 Hz, just like this one. As for why they are more expensive, who knows.

Cons:

-Performance. See above. For the price, it is surely as good as it gets, and will get the job done for the average DIY such as myself, but the power isn't overwhelming.

That is all the usefull information in my review, for a more exact and mostly boring background of my review of the stapler, read below.

I recently moved into a house with a fenced backyard. There was a 2-3" gap under the fence, and so I had to install chicken wire along the entire length of the fence so that our rat terrier (the wife's of course) couldn't get out. Using the Stanley staple gun, I did it. Now, as for performance of unit, it was very good, not great. I found that if I pressed down firmly on the wood I was stapling, that it would sink the staple all the way down. The reality was that the fence would "give" a little when i stapled into it, and so almost all the staples stick out just a little bit. Now, they'll work fine, but it just isn't the clean look everyone wants. It would have been nice to have a gun powerful enough to sink the staple no matter what, even if the wood under the gun vibrates or "gives" a little, but then I'm a guy that likes extra power in just about everything. It jammed once which was my fault for not setting it against the fence properly, and the jammed staple came out with no problem the next time I pressed the trigger. By the way, the rat (terrier) is effectively trapped. Stanley TRE550 Electric Staple/Brad Nail Gun

Purchased this gun, but will be returning it right away.

This gun may be good for very soft wood and short staples, but is worthless for your average wood or hardwood.

I tried this gun first with 1/2" staples on poplar wood. The staples only went in about halfway. I tried again with 1/4" staples (the shortest) and they still did not penetrate fully even with very hard pressure.

I tried the same staples with an average manual gun, and they penetrated fully.

If you're looking for something tho make your staple work easier, look elsewhere.

The reason the title says "buy a hammer with it" is because you will definitely need the hammer. Here is how the stapler works, first you fire the shortest staple (1/4 ") into soft pine wood, then you realize that it did not go all the way in, now you take the hammer and finish driving the staple in......see how easy it is. :-)

In short, this stapler is simply not a good product and definitely not up to what I normally expect from Stanley. And yes, I did have the stapler set on the "high" power setting. Unfortunately, I tossed all of the packaging thus I can't take it back so I will just throw it away and buy an Arrow brand. I hope you gain something from this review because I sure lost out on the deal.

Cheers,

Don

Purchased one of these to drive 3/8" Stainless Steel Arrow T-50 staples through thin indoor-outdoor carpet into oak stairs. The staples worked fin in my manual Arrow T-50 gun, but the Stanley gun, at it;s highest setting could only get the staples in all the way about half the time. One bang with a hammer drove them in the rest of the way , but that defeats the idea of the electric gun, in my opinion.

It did perform well on a block of Alder and also Doug Fir, but forget about Oak , Walnut or hardwoods.

I would recommend this product for woods softer than Oak.

I thought this would make my upholstery job easier. Now, I have to hammer each staple in, regardless of the setting. And forget odd angles- my manual works better. Unless you're flush against the surface, the staples don't even go in. The price is right, but only if it works as well as a manual. It does not. Maybe the $100 range does the job. Going back to the silver stapler.

I couldn't agree more with the other reviewers in this class (one star.) I've never written a review before, but this unit is so poor at setting staples that I am confused why it was ever marketed. Surely, Stanley knew it would be found out? The staples do not penetrate, the +/- control is cosmetic only, and the shame of putting this into a landfill is more valuable than the item. Is this American made?

I needed a stapler to hang insulation in my garage and trusted the Stanley brand. But most of the staples could only be driven in half way, and I was using 5/16" staples. I am very disappointed with this item and made for a frustrating experience.

The Stanley TRE550 works as well (i.e. as poorly) as other manual and electric staple guns and brad drivers that I have used. A common characteristic of these tools is that you must hold the base absolutely flat against the work and press the tool down firmly as you staple, otherwise the staple is not driven all the way down. It is difficult to determine by sense of touch whether the base is flat against the work. You may swear that you have positioned the tool correctly, but when you examine its posture visually you find that you have the back of the base slightly off the work or have it tilted to one side. The TRE550 has a narrow base so the problem is worse with the TRE550 than with some other staplers. The work piece must be firmly supported. For example, if you are stapling into a board that is slightly crooked and it is not touching the work table directly under your staple, the staple may not go all the way in. As other reviewers have noted, if you want staples driven flush with the work (with this or other electric or manual staplers) you should have a hammer handy to finish the job.

Unlike similar Arrow brand staplers, the TRE550 has a safety mechanism that prevents the tool from firing unless the nose is in contact with the work. It will still fire when the magazine is empty of staples and this leaves a slight indentation. The TRE550 is not the stapler to buy if you want to do rapid fire stapling. The safety is useful if you are worried about accidentally pressing the trigger and shooting a staple through the air.

I have used electric and manual staplers to attach artists canvas to wooden stretchers made of poplar. The TRE550 works as well as the electric Arrow ETF50BPN, the Stanley Manual TR150HL and an old model Arrow manual stapler that I use. Out of 10 staples, you have to finish driving one or two of them with a hammer. All staplers that I have used jam occasionally. The jams are not hard to clear. You open the magazine and the mangled staple usually falls out of the tool. To avoid jams, don't use small groups of staples that have broken away from a chain of staples, as these chains come fresh from a box.

While doing work on a roof, I was stapling sheets of polyethylene as a temporary cover. The staples were being driven into several sheets of tar paper that covered the top of concrete. I accidentally drove one staple into an area where the tar paper had peeled off and the staple hit the concrete. This broke the stapler. The TRE550 stopped firing at all. When I shook it, I could hear a loose part sliding up and down. I took the tool apart. (This probably voids any warranty. One of the screws requires a security torx.) The loose part was the metal band that drives the staple. There is a spring with two long arms and one of the arms has popped out of a hole in the band. Putting the spring back fixed the loose part. However the TRE550 was still dead electrically. There is a small perfboard inside the tool with some electrical components. The driving mechanism consists of a coil of wire and a piston that slides up and down within it. My voltmeter showed that that the resistance of the coil was 1.2 Ohms, so it was not shorted. I could measure 120 V AC coming into the tool. (The problem was not that the saftey switch was left open. I put the tool back together to test it.) I conclude some of the electric components on the perfboad have gone bad.

Checking the Stanley website, there are no replacement parts listed for this tool. The electronic components on the perfboard do have standard markings and it looks like a simple circuit.

The TRE550 has a knob that turns to adjust the power of the tool. Like the adjustments on other electric or manual staplers that I have used, this adjustment doesn't do much. With the tool apart you find the knob controls how far the piston rises. The knob has a shaft with a wedged shaped end that acts like a simple cam. As you turn the knob the piston is allowed to rise more or less. A complete revolution of the knob brings the setting back to where it was.

I rate this tool as two stars out of five to indicate it is a somewhat below average electric stapler. This is due to its narrow base. It did break easily, but whether other electric staple guns might have broken under the same conditions, I cannot say. - Electric - Staple Gun - Stapler - Stanley'

Car Seat Covers - high quality, seat covers

These are just what they said they are. They are easy to install. They are waterproof which is great. My husband kayaks and drives home with wet pants from the boat. We have a new car with leather seats and don't want the leather messed up. They look reasonably good. FH-PU002112On Sale... Universal Car Seat Cover Full Set Synthetic Leather Airbags Ready and Rear Seat Split Blue and black

I bought these carseat covers for my 2008 Toyota highlander. I have the cloth seats and they act as velcro, especially for my wife trying to get in with knit dresses/skirts. these covers fulfilled the expectations without costing a lot of money. Unfortunately, the company had front seat sets in other colors but only the full set in the tan/beige. The rear seating configuration

did not allow use of the reat seat covers; however, the price paid for the whole set was worth getting the front seats covered. They are easy to install. I would recommend them. They have worn well now for 2 months, have not bunched or wrinkled and look good in the car.

Hope this helps - Seat Covers - Front - High Quality - Gray'

Iphone 4 Case - iphone, leather case

This case is awesome! I often have a rather large rubber protective case around my iPhone. I work in a professional environment where I cannot be sliding a phone in and out of my shirt pocket or pants pocket. This case looks professional, allowing me to keep the iphone on my belt to use as needed, plus I can keep my protective case around it! Very secure case - I will be ordering more to have extra on hand and for friends! PREMIUM SPECIAL Apple Iphone 4gb 8gb 16gb 32gb Perfect Fit Leather Case (All Versions Including 3g)

I ordered this immediately after the first day of my iPhone4 purchase. This one is certainly more than the worth of money you would spend. I compared and the same case is sold for $9.99 or more almost everywhere, including Amazon, Ebay or possibly any other website or store.

Design is good, carry the phone well, has a magnetic flap which is better than Velcro. You can snap it in your belt or just hang it on. Surely great for the female wallet's too. Don't think twice just order it. It does what it is meant for.

I had a similar case for my 3G phone and it pretty much lasted about a year. I tried to re buy the same case and this one lasted less than a month before it ripped and my phone dropped to the ground. This one seems to be made a lot cheaper than my last one. If you are not rough with it one bit it should be fine but if you lead a busy lifestyle where your constantly taking your phone in and out of the case I would suggest spending a little more and getting a heartier case.

The cases sent ARE NOT AS PICTURED. The case and the picture are BROWN, not black as described and have a plastic logo on the front flap.. What do we have to do to get accurate descriptions so we don't waste our time ordering items based on the descriptions and pictures that we will not get?

Consider the seller carefully before ordering...

Great product for the price. It doesn't look cheaply made, which was my biggest concern about buying a case for this price. It's a bit too large for the iPhone 4 alone, but it seems custom made to fit an iPhone with a bumper or skin. As others have reported, there is a bit of a chemical-type smell, but it's very faint and will probably fade completely in a couple of days.

I bought two of these for my iPhone 4 and my wife's. We love them. They are an incredible value. The clip is really tight and strong. Never falls out. The fit is good. The phone never falls out of the case. The phone fits with or without a bumper or light case on the phone. They look good. The leather gets a bit loose with wear, but not bad. But who cares? At this price, you could buy a new one every month!

I got the case in the mail yesterday. Just in time too, because that is when my new iPhone arrived. The case fits perfectly. This an easy decision folks. Just buy it. And the best part is that you can't beat the price. - Iphone 3g Accessories - Leather Case - Holster - Iphone'

Battery Charger - droid, motorola droid

I searched for Droid X battery charger in Amazon's search and this item came up as number one and stated that it worked with Motorola's battery families. But when I got it my battery for my Droid X doesn't come close to fitting. Please put a better description on this product to save someone else the hassle.

Thanks. Motorola OEM P323 Spare Battery Charger Only with MicroUSB and MiniUSB Connectors for Different Battery Families

Pros:

It's a smartly designed casing. It works for multiple battery dimensions by using both sides of the plastic. It also supports two different cables for power (standard mini usb and Motorola's thinner version).

Cons:

We have 3 official Droid batteries for our phones (one extra was purchased on Amazon). They all charge in the Droid phones just fine; however, the extra one just won't charge in this charger (the charge light doesn't come on). The only difference with the BP6X batteries I can see is their manufacture date. The extra battery has a manufacture date of 20090813 compared to my original Droid batteries (20090905).

I have a Motorola Droid and have 2 batteries (the original and a replacement purchased recently from Amazon), this charger works on both of them and can be attached to a micro usb or mini usb charger (I am extremely happy about this, because I have a lot of old motorola mini usb chargers from previous phones!)

The build quality is excellent and it performs as described. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to charge Motorola Droid batteries outside of the phone!

In a few words, it works as expected. Should be explained that a charger cord (not included) is also needed with this item. A great charger for a second backup battery. Can be used in the car or home. A rubber band keeps the battery form falling out when in an unstable location. Used the charger four times so far to date - 7/6/10.

Charger only, does not include cables. You will need a mini or micro USB pc cable or ac adapter for this to work. Since I already have the requisite cable, I was able to save money and get what I needed. If you have a Droid 2 (like I have) or similar, you already have what you need since it comes with the phone.

I have a Motorola Milestone, and the biggest problem with this phone is the battery time: There were days that, late in the afternoom, the phone went dead. So i bought a extra battery and this charger. It works perfectly: charges the battery using the USB port, it's a cheap option to leave in your desk at work, and I just change the battery during the day, when the phone battery light turns to yellow. Simply like that.

Exactly what we needed for our backup batteries for our Droids 2. This device can also be used with a vehicle cigarette lighter adapter for the Droid 2. Nowadays, it's good to have backup sources of power--wireless device batteries in this case--if the electricity goes out.

The Battery On Charger has a two-sided Platform BOC accommodating several different battery families.

Features:

* Accepts both Mini and Micro USB power source

* Portable power solution

* Charges battery safely and efficiently, providing a charged up battery when needed

* The charger is BFR and PVC free

* Accommodates multiple battery families (different thickness/capacity of each battery family to supported).

* LED to indicate charging status

* USB CHARGER NOT INCLUDEDCompatible

Pros:

It's a smartly designed casing. It works for multiple battery dimensions by using both sides of the plastic. It also supports two different cables for power (standard mini usb and Motorola's thinner version).

Cons:

But aside from that I'm able to charge both my Droid and Droid 2 batteries just fine.

Also keep in mind that some of these charges do not come with USB Mini and Micro. So make sure you have one. Your droid normally does come with one anyways.

Works as advertised. I use it to charge my extra Motorola Droid batteries. Keep in mind, that this charger doesn't come with a charging cable, just what you see in the picture. So make sure you either have the appropriate cable to pair with this or purchase something like these:

1) Motorola SKN5004A ECOMOTO Micro USB Data Cable for MOTOROLA DROID A855 Motorola Cliq Karma QA1 Rival A455 Hint QA30 ZINE ZN5 ZN4 Krave E8 ROKR V9m RAZR2 and other Motorola micro USB devices

2) Motorola Micro USB Standard AC Travel Charger SPN5334A

It works great for me with my original droid battery and my spare Motorola droid battery I got for around 10 dollars on amazon. I will be ordering more of these for my other family members how ever shipping is a joke if I buy 5 of these im still paying for shipping and handling on every single one. And I bet they all come in the same box too. - Droid - Spare Battery - Motorola Droid - Battery Charger'

Usb Car Stereo - usb, sd

Simple little device that is very flexible. The radio reception AM and FM is good both in the city and on the highway. Music from the SD card is the easiest way to use the "mech less" device. Be aware that the unit is limited to 16gb, not a real limitation with the SD card but I have an older generation ipod that is 20gb and it will not play through the USB port. However, I can use the auxiliary port with the ipod just fine. The built-in amplifier is not terribly powerful but does put out some good sound in my 1988 VW Vanagon which has a big interior space. I need to turn up the volume control almost all the way if I want it to play loudly. But there are jacks on the unit to connect an external amplifier. Hey, what can you expect for $40. All in all, I am quite satisfied and think that you get a lot of basic features for a cheap price. We shall see how it's long term durability is in a few years but I assume since it's all electronic (hence the term mech less)that there's not much that can go wrong from a wear standpoint. I would highly recommend this unit as a strong value and candidate to replace/upgrade any stock unit in your car. Dual XR4110 In-Dash MP3, WMA, AM/FM Receiver with Front Panel USB, SD Card, and 3.5mm Aux Inputs (Gray)

Dual XR4110 Mechless Digital Media Receiver

Wasn't sure what to expect after reading the variety of impressions in previous reviews, but figured it was worth $40 to take a chance.

PROS:

- Better than expected AM/FM tuner with 18 FM and 12 AM presets. Range is better than the premium stereo in our Chrysler Town & County. No memory loss with this unit.

- All 3 digital inputs worked on first attempt and volume level was even with the radio tuner. That's good as there is no way to adjust it.

- I input internet radio from my Moto Droid thru the Aux input. It works great! If you are a Pandora user this is the way to go!

- Sound is decent. If you need booming bass, you already have an external amp and sub, right? Hook it up!

- My car has a separate clock, so I don't miss that.

CONS:

- My only real complaint is that the display doesn't dim with the lights. Anybody got a left-over scrap of light grey window tint?

I'm a retired USN ET & CATV Engineer who started as a teenage hillbilly car stereo installer. A good 8-track in those days put out a whopping 14 watts!

My experience tells me that even a simple unit like this can sound fantastic with good speakers. Maybe replacing old, worn-out speakers with quality new ones of the proper wattage would satisfy those who aren't impressed with the sound.

If you're an audiofile who lives in the vehicle, what are you looking at something like this for anyway?

I bought 2 of these radios in the past couple of months and I am really impressed with the quality considering the price. I had never purchased any other products by Dual in the past so I read a lot of reviews before purchasing. Because of the low price and overall favorable reviews I took a chance. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality.

I would like to address some of the issues I have read in other reviews and add my two cents. First of all, many have complained about the low output of this unit. It is a 60 Watt output which means 15 watts per channel. Not a lot but not exactly weak either. I think some may have interpreted this as 60 Watts per channel so that would account for the disappointment. I never had a problem with the output from my OEM Radio and I was just looking for something with more input options, so in my case the 60 Watts was more than enough. If you want this thing to crank out power you WILL need an amp, but for a good sounding radio playing at a modest volume this unit is great.

I had also heard some issues about a clicking sound when using this radio. The sound from my 2 units are crystal clear and the only time I get any clicking or distortion is when I use the Aux or USB input while my portable device is charging from the cigarette lighter. This creates a ground loop problem and Is perfectly normal because cars have a chassis ground (tires prevent the car from being truly grounded). IF you want to prevent this problem you can get a filter to prevent it. Personally, I do this so infrequently that the filter is not worth the investment for me but it is fixable.

I have seen many reviews saying that this unit does not have a shuffle option so it plays all the songs in the order they are saved in your portable device or media. I am not sure where the problem is here. My unit has a Random setting (the actual button is labeled RDM and is the same as the #2 preset button) and it shuffles up the songs just fine on my install.

I think the biggest complaint I share with others that have reviewed this product is the lack of a clock and the bright LCD display. I don't really care about the clock because I usually use the clock on my GPS as it is very accurate so for me not having a clock is actually an advantage because It's one less clock to reset for daylight savings time, but for others who need the clock I can certainly understand the inconvenience. Not having a Dimmer control is annoying because while driving at night, the blue display can be distracting in your peripheral vision. Particularly in my wife's Pontiac Vibe where the radio is mounted high in the dash close to the windshield. The blue is also kind of annoying because many radios allow you to change the LCD color to match the rest of the lights in the car. It looks kind of weird in my Pontiac Grand Prix because all the lights in the car are red and then the radio is blue. I won't gripe too much about this because of the low cost of this radio. It's to be expected that some of your higher end features will not be available. A clock is not a high end feature though and when I found out there was no clock I could only ask "what were they thinking"?

I think the most valuable asset of this radio is its compact size. It is about 2 inches shorter in depth than the average radio. This was a big advantage for me because my vehicle is equipped with OnStar. OnStar Vehicles run the OnStar audio for phone and voice commands along with other safety features like the door chime through the OEM Radio. If you install an aftermarket radio in an OnStar vehicle you need to also install a wire harness with an OnStar control module to replace the one you throw away when you discard your OEM radio. This module takes up a bit of space during install so every inch of space helps. This unit leaves plenty of space for the additional cable harness and OnStar module so if you have OnStar this may be a valuable advantage to you.

Another advantage is that this unit actually does a decent job of playing my Sony Walkman from the USB port. I have never really cared for iPods but I have owned one for years simply because accessories for iPods are everywhere. I have recently parted with the iPod in favor of a Sony Walkman. I purchased this Dual radio primarily for the Aux port but when I tested the USB port with the Walkman I found that it works very well and gives me better audio then the Aux port. It lists the library by assigning numbers to the folders so you don't get song titles or artist or anything like that but if you are just looking to be able to play songs random with the ability to skip or change folders from the radio dial, it's great. If you want all the song information or more advanced browsing, you can still use the Aux port and control playback from your portable device.

My biggest complaint about the unit is a relatively minor one. The AM/FM input is very loud compared to the other inputs. This unit has four inputs Antenna, SD, USB, and AUX and they all are slightly different in volume. The problem is not that I can't get my music loud enough. Even using the Aux input which tends to be the lowest volume input of the 4, I can get the radio plenty loud. The Problem is when listening to The Aux input, for example, and then switching to FM...You are likely to find yourself quickly grabbing at the volume knob to lower the volume. I have gotten used to this now and always turn the volume down before switching inputs then adjust it back up as necessary. A minor inconvenience but with the other problems I mentioned it is enough to keep this from being rated 5Stars in my opinion.

Pros:

*It will play my walkman through the USB port (better sound than using the Aux port)

*Price vs. performance is fantastic

*Since there is no CD drive radio is very small making install a snap.

*I can charge other devices from the USB port while listening to one of the other inputs.

Cons:

*No dimmer control for LCD display

*No Clock

*Big difference in volume between Aux, SD/USB, and AM/FM sources. - Sd - Mp3 - Aux - Usb'

Exercise Tools - step, exercise

This is a sturdy and versatile piece of equipment for people of all fitness levels. Utilizing the adjustable height, I can easily work it into my clients strength and aerobics programs for variety and fun. I originally purchased this stepper to do aerobic step testing for my new clients, but a lot of other applications have presented themselves!

My only criticism of this item would be to suggest that the stability strip on the top level step could be wider to cover the entire top. As it is there is about two inches of hard curved plastic on either side of the strip that could allow for a misplaced foot to slip off. The Step F1080 High Step

I hemmed and hawwed about buying this for awhile, then decided to take the plunge. What a good decision that was, this is a very valuable and versatile piece of equipment to me. I have a variety of workout videos that I can use this with, but I appreciate the adjustability of it the most. I find the 12 inch height perfect for my 35 plus year old knees. I have used The Firms step up boxes and Transfirmer which are 16 inches high, that height is doable but the 12 inch height is much more comfortable for me. And if for some reason I decide to add more height, I have found that my extra set of purple risers for my club step fit the high step just perfect. They don't exactly match colorwise but big deal.

I use it for aerobics, weight work, the topper is perfect for calf raises, etc. All sorts of uses for this step.

Great buy and well worth the money, I am glad that I finally wised up and bought one for myself!

Mine also came with a workout DVD, Cathe Friedrich's High Step Circuit which shows you even more ways to utilize

the High Step. Recommended.

This is an excellent product! Love the DVD that came with it and it is in my regular rotation. It is one of the best exercise DVDs I own. The step is well constructed and high quality. It is easy to change the riser height. I highly recommend this product and the wonderful DVD that comes with it.

Love this step! So much sturdier than other high steps I've used before -- allows you to step up and down quickly and confidently. Very versatile and definitely worth the money! Also like the DVD that came with it -- good deal!

I purchased The Step F1080 High Step and it was delivered in a timely fashion. The DVD inside had no clear wrapper indicating a new product, the outside DVD case was broken and missing the entire top section. DVD inside plays fine. Right out of the box the bottom step had a collection of dust and floor dirt ground into the four rubber/plastic floor cushions...obviously already been used on somebody's dirty floor. Although Clorox disinfecting wipes cleared up any dirt issues with the step, the broken DVD case (with the broken pieces completely missing from the box so it wasn't broken in transit) makes me a little less confident in the merchandise I might buy in the future. The step works fine, the DVD works fine. I just don't think I got a brand new product.

This is the best step product on the market and it really works. I have had this for about a month now and the difference is incredible. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to work the legs and glutes, which is a difficult area for most women.

This product shipped quickly and I highly recommend it. However, it did not contain a DVD, which was very disappointing, since I ordered this particular one because claimed to contain a DVD.

Amazon did take care of me, but I wasn't pleased that the product description was wrong.

I ordered this for my wife recently and I have used it more than her! I love that there are so many heights available. My basement floor is tiled and can be a bit slippery, that's where the anti-skid material on the bottom comes in handy, this thing stays put like nobody's business!

Who needs a big step when this little step will do? I use my High Step for general step exercises, plyo work, advanced pushups and core exercises- This is easier to store, less expensive and serves almost all of the same purposes as a larger step. - Step - Fitness - Exercise - Exercise Tools'

External Drive - external dvd drive, external dvd burner

The ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U is the replacement model for the 08D1S. It's plug and play--with the CyberPower 7 port powered USB hub the drive installs without software and is recognized by Windows 7. It does, however, require 2 USB ports. The supplied cable is a Y-USB with 2 USB "A" connectors on one end.

A common complaint of notebook owners are malfunctioning internal optical drives. This drive will be my primary optical drive, and my internal notebook drive only a back-up if necessary. Rubber feet help keep the ASUS from sliding around. The provided stand didn't look very stable, and inserting a disc is actually safer with the drive horizontal.

It rips CDs and plays DVDs flawlessly--a better, faster drive than the one in my HP notebook. A quality piece of gear from ASUS. Asus USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D2S-U (Black)

I bought this item for my Asus Eee PC Netbook. The installation was a breeze and everything runs perfectly. I didn't have to use a disc (although it comes with one), and all I had to do was plug it in and it was ready to use. The one thing that you should know is that it requires the use of 2 USB ports and they have to be right next each other. If you have a laptop or PC that has 1 USB on one side, and the other on the opposite, you're out of luck (I have yet to try it by only using 1 USB port). I would hardly call it a complaint but it is a tad on the loud side when you play a DVD. Overall a great little DVD player for a much cheaper price here rather than buying one at your local Best Buy.

Ordered on 10-29 and received on 11-2, this external burner is a great addition to my Asus netbook. Installation was simple and it came with the Power2Go software. It works much better than I expected. I have had no problems burning CD/DVDs (so far).

The ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U operates well for normal use, but has several flaws. It reads and writes DVD-RAM discs, reads CDs lets you watch DVDs, and takes up very little space.

The drive comes with an extremely short USB 2.0 Y adapter. To operate correctly, this adapter, or a similar one must be used. It must be connected to self-powered hub or directly to ports on a PC. If the adapter is not used, it will appear to be working until a disc is inserted. It may work with some types of disc and not with others, or fail intermittently.

It is a low profile drive and as a result does not have a fully motorized disc tray. The tray opens a small distance automatically using a spring, but must then be pulled out the rest of the way to insert a disc, and then pushed back into the drive. On certain table surfaces, the force needed to push the tray in all the way will push the drive across the table. Attempting to hold the drive in one place by pressing on the top will bend it inward, so it must be held by the sides. This may require two hands for some users.

I have not used the included stand or software, and cannot comment on them.

I don't install my optical drive in my laptop because i prefer to have an extra batter in the modular bay. From time to time I want an optical drive to install software or burn a disk. Instead of getting my optical drive out of my briefcase and swapping, I now use this. It connects to my port replicator versus USB so it is always available. Stands up to use very little foot print. Works perfectly with no installation or software (on win7). When you pop in a disk, it hold it so it won't fall off.

PROs: small footprint, cheap, dead simple setup, reliable

COns: By design door does not open all the way ( i think this is so it won't tip over) so you have to slightly slide in disk. Easy to do once you get the hang of it.

I was looking for an external DVD writer when my laptop DVD stopped working. This works great as a DVD replacement or addition for home or on the go. It is small and light and looks fancy (black mirror effect).

Installation was easy and quick, also has software, but works well also with my previous burning software.

Burning and reading worked fine so far, and it is not too loud neither.

It can stand upright with a stand or lay flat on the table.

Potential shortcomings are similar to most external USB DVD writers I have seen: Needs 2 USB connections for full usage (especially for hih speed and burning). It is beautiful but the material is light and a little cheap plastic as usual, I could imagine it is easy to break, which some of the negative reviewers mentioned. When handled with care that shouldn't be a problem, unless you have kids.

I recommend it, I haven't found a better one during my search at Amazon.

I bought this DVD-RW drive to use with my ASUS 1015-PEM Netbook. While I had another older external DVD-RW burner in the house, I wanted a more convenient compact model to use with my netbook, whether away on trips or just sittin' about the house. This drive fits the bill perfectly. It is both light and compact, not to mention a great value when I purchased it on Amazon.com with a $10US rebate!

Here's what I like about the drive:

1.) It's light and compact, as I previously mentioned.

2.) It was under $30US (after rebate). Great Deal!

3.) Drive is pretty quick. I didn't run any benchmarks, but it performs very satisfactorily for me. I can write an entire CD in about 4 minutes.

4.) No external power required. It feeds off my netbook's battery via 2 USB ports. (More about that later.) Power usage is low and only minimally reduced my overall battery life. I couldn't detect the drive using any power when it was connected but not in use.

5.) Included software easily installs and actually works pretty good. However, there are better, more robust choices. This is very much "standard edition" software with several features turned off or only available with a paid upgrade to the "professional" or "full version" of the software. I didn't consider this a negative since I bought the drive for my netbook and I don't need, or want, a full blown, full featured software package on my netbook. You can do all the basics: copy a CD/DVD, perform a backup, make a CD/DVD data disk. All the standard CD and DVD formats are supported.

6.) The diamond pattern exterior is a lot nicer than I ever truly considered when I initially purchased the drive. In reality, it didn't matter to me what it looked like, so long as the drive was black (vs. white or some other color). However, I am surprised at how aesthetically pleasing it is to both look at and touch. It has a unique tactile feel that actually aids in making the drive easier to grab with your hands.

Here's what I don't like about the drive:

1.) The drive requires 2 USB ports that are right next to each other in order to provide full power to the drive. If your USB ports are far apart or on opposite sides of your machine, the cord will not work without some sort of extention. You only need about a 1-foot extension in this situation. It would have been nice if that 1-foot extention was included in the box, or at least order-able from ASUS. I, personally, don't have this problem as my netbook has 2 USB ports that are side-by-side. I tested the drive with only 1 cable plugged in and the drive read CD/DVD media with no problem, however, it wouldn't successfully burn a CD/DVD at the reduced power level. It needed full power (2 USB ports plugged in) to burn a disk. It was nice to know that I could read from the drive at the reduced power of 1 USB port if I was in a critically low power situation and needed to use the drive to read a disk. Also I should note that I did not test the drive connected to a USB Hub.

2.) I wish the drive had LightScribe capability. It does not, but the drive was only $30US and the cheapest similar drive I could find that had LightScribe, was twice the price.

3.) I wish the drive came with a case of some sort. Clearly the portable nature of the drive implies it will be tossed in a computer bag or backpack at some point, and a case to hold the drive and cable to prevent dust, scratches, bumps and bruises would have been a nicer touch than the included vertical stand.

My Conclusion: This is a great deal for the price. It is the perfect optical drive companion for my ASUS Netbook and delivers as promised. I am very happy with this purchase and would buy the drive again, without hesitation. I highly recommend this drive for use with a netbook or laptop with the available USB ports to provide the necessary power. - External Dvd Drive - External Dvd Burner - Asus Eee - Asus'

Book Recommendations - martial arts books, philosophy

'Living the Martial Way' is a valuable book that should be read by serious martial artists.

The author explores a wide range of issues including the mental/'spiritual' aspects, history, philosophy, strategy/tactics, and many others. This work is particularly valuable to those who do not have the good fortune to have an instructor who is a traditionalist. Those martial artists who have such a teacher have undoubtedly gotten a dose of most of the best of this volume. Those without such a mentor will doubly benefit from Morgan's instruction.

Here is the breakdown of this book as I see it:

The Good

----------------

1. Lots of interesting history.

2. Excellent material on the ethical principles, loyalty, honor, etc.

3. Philosophical roots of the martial arts.

4. The benefits of training, particularly as it applies to seeking ecellence in other areas of one's life.

5. A good section on strategy and tactics.

6. Excellent commentary on internal vs. external motivations.

7. A good response to religious based objections to martial arts training.

The Not So Good

--------------------

1. Too much discussion of 'face' including some rationalization for inappropriate responses to a loss of face.

2. Some discussion of revenge and suicide that should have been treated strictly as historical instead of some weak justification of these as applied to the modern world.

3. The author is rather elitist in his view of warriors being superior to pretty much everyone else on the planet. Although this part included some good observations, it was overdone.

Overall, I would recommend this book for any martial artist. Additionally, I think that a lot of the information would be interesting and valuable even to non 'warriors'. Living the Martial Way : A Manual for the Way a Modern Warrior Should Think

This book is a masterpiece. It is a great guide for the martial artist and fills in many gaps in his or her training. For example, Morgan has a chapter on Honor. He is right when he states that we in the martial arts "world" hear the word "honor" often, but, never have its definition articulated to us. He gives a groundwork of tenets (obligation, justice, and courage)and builds a thesis as to why these tenets are important to martial artist of all belt ranks. Even though I think his tenets are incomplete, but neverless insightful; it is a great start, and he is the first to forcefully lay down such a well reasoned view. The book is full of training ideas and incorperating the martial arts into one's "everyday" life. I often refer to this book when I have not lived up to one of the tenets and strive to be a better martial artist and after reading this book, a better man.

This is a must read book and a book to be owned by anyone who considers themselves a warrior. I require its reading by all of my Black Belts and recommend it to all my students. This book explains in detail the essential elements of a true martial artist/warrior. It is not about the skill of fightinhg, yet more importantly about the moral and ethical obligation to self. This book should be required reading in all police and military academies. I think, it is one of the five major books regarding the martial arts. The Martial Way is one in which the practitioner can excell in life and the constant pursuit of excellence in all of life. The mind, body and spirit must be trained as one and function as one in all pursuits. This book will assist one greatly in acheiving the mental balance of the Martial Way.

The title says it all. Written with authority, this book navigates the modern warrior through the minefield that he will have to walk as a result of being a martial person in a world full of those who are not. The writings help to keep one out of the traps that many of us fall into as a result of not having the mentorship that we truly need. Using his knowledge of primarily eastern warrior traditions such as bushido (Japanese chivalry), Morgan covers all of the issues that warriors grapple with and then gives the answers that true masters have been teaching for over 1000 years. His research is thourough, his writting style formal yet easy to understand. He goes into the social history surrounding the ancient texts refered to (such as "The Book Of Five Rings", "The Art Of War", etc) and in doing so helps the western reader adjust his outlook so that the classic texts are more easily understood and applied. Beyond that, Morgan thoughroughly covers such topics as:

The Warrior Mindset

The Foundations Of Honor (Obligation, justice,

courage, face)

Loyalty

Restraint

Revenge (when is it justified, how to conduct it with

honor)

Fitness

Nutrition and diet

Aerobic capacity and flexability

Religion and Mysticism

etc.

While few modern warriors will agree with EVERYTHING he says, this is by and large the information you have been in need of.

All in all a complete book from start to finish. Highly recomended.

I would highly recommend--regardless of the system of martial arts you study-- Living the Martial Way by Forrest E. Morgan. This book will change your whole outlook on how you study martial arts and will teach you how to develop attitudes based on ancient Asian martial arts. It is a manual for the way a modern warrior should think. This is the most influential book I have ever read. I sincerely recommend it as a "must read" for any student of martial arts or anyone interested in a noble way of living.

Recently I read and reviewed a book called "The Karate Dojo" by Peter Urban. Written in the mid-1960s, it's a snapshot of a bygone martial arts era. Mr. Urban portrayed an ideal dojo training situation that would enable one to become a "weaponless weapon." "Living the Martial Way" has a similar focus on achieving the status of a "modern warrior." However, it goes a lot farther by offering detailed practical and philosophical steps to that end. Combined, these steps constitute the "Martial Way." It's not for the faint of heart.

The book is broken down into three aspects of the Martial Way: The Way of Training, The Way of Honor, and The Way of Living. In Part One, the author discusses how a warrior trains. Practicing once or twice a week for a couple of hours won't cut it. Instead, the warrior should rigorously train in their chosen martial art every day, and augment their core style with additional study in other disciplines. Part Two delves into the warrior's internal path by focusing on developing the foundational character quality of Honor. Finally, Part Three deals with a mixture of the practical and spiritual aspects of the Martial Way, including physical fitness, mysticism, and personal bearing.

Mr. Morgan provides a comprehensive path towards warriorship. For the most part, his guidance is clear and practical. However, there are a couple of debatable areas. For example, some of the circa 1990 diet and exercise information Mr. Morgan promulgates is a bit stale in 2007. Even so, the author's general admonition to eat right and exercise are timeless, so consult some newer resources to implement his recommendations. Also, I was a bit taken aback by his almost religious zeal towards becoming a warrior. To be sure, excellence requires much work, pain, and sacrifice. But many desire a more balanced life, and I'm not sure one could fully pursue the Martial Way and have a family life. Indeed, you'd probably have to be a celibate monk to truly achieve warriorship (for all I know that may be a requirement, since Mr. Morgan isn't forthcoming on his family life).

Overall, I was challenged by "Living the Martial Way" to take my budo practice (and my faith as a Christian) to a higher level and integrate it deeper into my life. However, I'm not as dismissive of the twice weekly practitioner as Mr. Morgan is. Because for years that was my training regimen at the kyu (colored belt) level. Mr. Morgan might dismiss me as a mere "martial artist" (see page 25). But I've realized many personal benefits from that level of practice. Even so, now that I'm a ShoDan assistant instructor I agree with him that a deeper level of commitment is needed. I must be a good role model for my students, and that requires more intensity on my part. That's why I added boxing to my "doctrinal core" of karate over a year ago, and also the reason I'm reading many books about the martial arts.

I recommend "Living The Martial Way" as a necessary text for the martial artist. It will affirm the dedication of the serious practitioner, and perhaps challenge the not-so-serious one towards a more profound level of commitment. In addition, you may wish to augment this book with "Clearing Away Clouds" by Stephen Fabian, "The Making of a Butterfly" by Phillip Starr, "The Martial Way and Its Virtues" by F. J. Chu, "The Martial Spirit" by Herman Kauz, and just about anything by Dave Lowry. - Karate - Philosophy - Martial Arts Books - Guide'

Colanders - pink kitchen

I have this since last year. I love the color, however, the bottom of it arrived with bit rust. As time goes, it gets worst. I took 2 stars off due to The price and the rust. I had other similar colander, it did not cost as much. Other then the paint issue, it works ok.

5/2010

After 2 years, I am still happy with this Colander, I use it almost everyday. Yeah, about the rust, it gets worst, but thank goodness only stay at the bottom of it. It's pretty much full circle now, but for the time I have enjoy the pretty color and I believed it's going to last bit longer, no regret. Calypso Basics 3 Quart powder coated Colander, Pink

I bought this because I just loved the pink color and the size is perfect. I used it a few times and was very careful to wash and dry it right away. Well, I forgot one evening and after just one day (less than 24 hours) in the sink with water, I had rust that I can't get off inside outside - buy the holes, by the rim and by the handle. What a big disappointment. It's trash now. Pretty color but don't leave it sitting in water like I did. Five stars for color, zero stars for durability. Disappointing. Don't buy unless you only want it for decoration. I have the larger one too but I don't use it and won't for this reason. - Pink Kitchen'

Impact Milwaukee - v28, impact driver

I have owned the Dewalt 1/2" Impact Wrench for several years. When I recently decided to do my own service on my 1.1/4 ton truck, I found out that the Dewalt just didn't have what it takes to loosen tire lug nuts. Enter the Milwaukee...

There is almost no way to describe this thing to you. First, it's BIG. It's not going to be the only Impact Wrench you own, because there are a lot of places it plain won't fit.

Second, it's HEAVY. Trying to hold this thing over your head to remove bolts requires some serious muscle. Not for the weak or faint of heart.

Finally, it's strong. Those lug nuts I was mentioning? Eight per wheel, and 32 total? This thing zipped the nuts off so fast I thought I had slipped off the first one! Took all 32 off, then a few hours later put all 32 back ON with one charge of the battery!!

And speaking of the battery - some genius at Milwaukee deserves a gold star. Remember when I said it won't fit certain places because of its size? Well, Milwaukee designed it so the battery can slide on from the front of the tool, or slide on from the back, and it works either way. Putting it on from the front makes the wrench shorter overall - if a little front heavy - while putting it on from the back gives you more room to get your wrench into tight spots by moving the battery pack out of the way.

BE WARNED that you should make certain you have a good set of impact sockets to go with this wrench. DO NOT attempt to use it with a standard socket, as you are likely to end up with shrapnel flying everywhere when the regular socket fails. Ask me how I know?!!

Bottom line - the tool is a little big for 'average' wrenching, but when you need to go after the big boys there is nothing like it!

Go buy one. You NEED it. Milwaukee 0779-22 V28 28-Volt Lithium Ion 1/2-Inch Cordless Impact Wrench

I just got the 0779-22 unit. I bought this unit after comparing it to the Dewalt 18v wrench. (Dewalt is coming out with a 36v, 325ft-lb wrench.) The biggest selling point was the variable speed capability of the Milwaukee. I have used this for a weekend of racing. Performed a few tire swaps and service on the trailer with ease, approx 60 cycles of lug nuts at 87ft-lbs., 50% batt usage. Use of a torque stick makes tightening a breeze.

It took me a few cycles to get used to the action....it can't quite compete with my IR231 pneumatic wrench, but I am very impressed non the less.

The 0779-22 kit is a capable tool and I for one, am very satisfied.

I do some circle track racing and bought this for convenience in the pit area. I wasn't sure if it would have enough power when I ordered it, but it has more than enough. It makes a tire change during the race much easier and a lot faster. The fuel gauge on the battery is really nice as well. This way you know how much juice you have and don't get stuck half way through a tire change and have the battery die on you.

I bought this originally for just tire changes. Now I find my self using it for pretty much everything on the cars. It works great for breaking loose head bolts and pretty much anything else under the car.

It even came in handy when building our deck this past summer. I guess it is just one of those tools that once you have it you find many more uses for it than you originally intended. This has been a great investment and I highly recommend it.

With the battery Pack actually installed on the tool ,this tool has unbeatable POWER and ENDURANCE. I've mostly used the pneumatic variety, this has comparable power, but is portable, although big and heavy.I was laying under my truck loosening some rusted bolts, before I dug my heels in,I was Break Dancing -20 years too late! And as usual Great prices and service from Amazon.

I love this impact. It is every bit as good as a snap on impact I borrowed from a friend. yesterday I did two vehicles ,one was a snap the other had studs on it that had been over tightened and rust as well and after I was done the battery still had two full bars left. I am impressed with the power and the way I can change the position of the battery. I now own three Milwaulkee V28 sawsalls and now this V28 1/2 inch impact. I highly recommend this product to anyone that really needs to have a dependable tool that won't let them down while on the job.

I was skeptical about buying this tool. A lot of money would be wasted if it didn't perform as advertised. I placed my trust in Milwaukee's reputation. When a negative reviewer has only one review to his credit - and that review is negative - that tells me that the reviewer is 100% negative and I disqualify his input from my decision making. When my 100psi impact wrench began failing to break free 15/16ths-inch cutting-blade nuts on a 1500-pound commercial mower, I knew more power was needed. Laying on my back under a raised cutting deck and pushing a 15-inch box-end wrench with a pipe extension with both feet and while pulling another such setup with both hands above the deck left me with an aching back for a month, but the 12-inch blade bolt and nut did come loose. Never again. After 8 months of use and a dozen blade changes, my worries have vanished. It takes about 15 seconds to break the nuts loose. The first time I used it - and the nut didn't break free in 3 seconds - my heart sank. Then it lifted. I was surprised that there is no reverse torque. I was expecting this wrench to kick like a mule after reading the break-dancing comment. One hand is all that is needed. I've removed lugs from trucks and cars and tractors. No problems. Another impressive fact is that I can remove 20 lugs on a vehicle and still have all four red power indicator lights burning on the battery. Granted, there are impact wrenches made for 18-wheelers and tanks that are rated in the thousands of foot-pounds of torque, but this 28V Milwaukee slid under the wire for me. It is about all the power I need. Every year I hear about a compressor exploding and causing injury or death. Perhaps condensation had accumulated inside the tank for years and rusted the walls. Compressor tanks do need to be drained. And fighting hoses can be like wrestling an anaconda. So far, my 28V impact wrench has not exploded, tripped or choked me. And it hasn't bitten me either because it does the job - and for me - that makes it worth the price. - Overrated - V28 - Impact Driver'

Historical Romance - historical fiction, occupation

This is a wonderful story about two children who meet by chance on one of the Channel Islands during the period of German occupation in WW2. The thirteen-year-old girl, Rachel Levi, is the only known survivor of the Nazi persecution and the disbandment of the wealthy Jewish Levi family in Munich, and she is alive and in the Channel Islands solely because her astute but desperate mother bribed a German army officer so that it was distinctly in his interest to keep Rachel alive. So instead of sending Rachel to a concentration camp with her mother, he put her to work in the kitchen of a slave camp on the island of Alderney, from which she has just escaped under cover of darkness. Fifteen-year-old Tom Le Breton - the son of a Guernsey family who is desperately hiding his boat and himself from the Germans after straying beyond limits while night-fishing - finds Rachel sobbing on the beach, alone and desperate. Tom's young heart goes out to her and he vows to help her escape from the camp.

So begins a friendship that soon develops into a bond which is destined to stand the test of time as Tom and his relatives risk their lives keeping Rachel safe from discovery. But the Germans are closing in on Rachel and when a chance to send her to the safety of England presents itself, they seize it, even though it means a sad parting for the young couple. Meanwhile, in the confusion of her hasty departure from her hiding place on the island of Herm, Rachel forgets her mother's often-repeated advice to keep her shoes, especially the right one, by her. She consequently leaves it somewhere in her island hideaway, not knowing that her loving mother has hidden a clue to her daughter's legacy within the shoe.

Then one day in May 1945, the British finally liberate the Channel Islands and Tom unexpectedly finds Rachel back in his arms, this time for ever, they pledge. In time, they marry and raise a family in a very modest cottage on Guernsey, blissfully unaware of sinister plans afoot in Germany to end Rachel's life. Along the way, these also result in the murder of the only person who could have shed light on the obscure mystery surrounding Rachel's old shoe. However, with suspicions raised, her family set off on a trail of discovery about the significance of the shoe.

From here, the story develops even further in its completely gripping fashion, extending beyond romance, heroism and loyalty into unexpected dark happenings, betrayals and evil intentions. It becomes virtually impossible to put the book down until its breathless climax arrives in Germany at the shareholders' meeting of a large company. The exciting denouement-- best described as in the style of "a grand movie finale"-- brings this beautifully crafted and highly recommended novel to a very satisfying and rewarding ending. Rachel's Shoe

A young girl is alone expect for the protection of a friendly German guard on the prison camp island of Alderney during World War 2. Both her parents are dead, she is a Jewess and her sole protector is about to be transferred to the Russian Front.

In the bleakest hour of her short life, Tom, a teenage boy from Guernsey, hauls his fishing boat onto the Alderney shore and carries her off to the tiny island of Herm. To say more would spoil what is a first class story of danger, love and intrigue under the noses of an occupying army. The characters are sensitively drawn and credible and the plot is intriguing, unpredictable and completely engaging.

This is a story that could only be told by an author with in-depth local knowledge of the islands and a period in history that many people over here were blissfully unaware of.

What a great read! The author keeps you absorbed throughout and it's a wonderful story for any book lover, whatever their age. His mix of fact and fiction about the subject of the occupation of the Channel Islands is done perfectly. Other books have attempted to do this and failed to deliver. I want to read a sequel soon and as other reviewers have stated, it would make an excellent movie too!

An excellent read, very difficult to put down. A combination of Romance and thriller set mainly in the Channel Island Bailwick of Guernsey, spanning the German occupation of the channel islands during the second world war and then into the 60's/70's. If you like Romance & Thrillers you will enjoy this book. If you know Guernsey, Alderney and Herm, which make up the Baliwick of Guernsey in the Channel islands, this book will have even more interest.

A must buy book

This story is set in the occupied Channel Island of Guernsey and it's clear from the start the author knows his island and it's history intimately. The book is more authentic than other recent novels with the possible exception of The Book of Ebenezer Le Page (New York Review Books Classics) which is also written with great local knowledge and details but lacks the storyline of Rachel's Shoe. The story is captivating and you'd have to be pretty thick skinned not to form an attachment with both Rachel and Tom, the main characters. Their plight, through the dangers of war and later the unscrupulous greed of big business, is well crafted and very believable.

I also purchased the sequel The Causeway which brings the story to a dramatic and unexpected conclusion. Another highly enjoyable read.
