Photography - hd camcorder, camcorder

The whole premise behind pocket video recorders is small size and portability assures accessibility and more spontaneous use when compared to a full size video camera. For the size and ease of use, however, you make some sacrifices. I did a fair amount of research into this product class to find a pocket video camera that was loaded with features and had the fewest trade offs when stacked up against a full size video recorder. I pulled the trigger on this product and absolutely love it. Here's the highlights:

1) Size. This thing is small. It's only a few millimeters bigger than the Flip and Kodak offerings. It's sized just right to hand hold comfortably, but not too big that it takes up too much valuable purse or bag real estate. It also comes with a very nice cordura carrying case! It's only about 4 oz. and some reviews have criticized the Camileo for a "plasticy" feel. Not so, this unit feels solid yet light. True the body is made of plastic, but the weight trade off is worth it, and who cares as long as it's solid. Plus a lighter plastic unit is much more likely to survive the inevitable drop than a heavier metal one (lighter and more pliable).

2) Video Quality. I don't own another pocket video camera so I can't intelligently comment on the video quality compared to other units. That being said, the video looks fantastic on the big flat screen. I actually use the 720p mode mostly to have the option to zoom and image stabilize (both not available at 1020p), and I cannot tell a difference between the two modes when displayed on 52" flat screen. The video is honestly as good as my three year old full size HD video camera in normal light. In dim light there is a little graininess to the video, but there's an integrated light to help with this and I really don't take many recordings in dark conditions anyway.

3) Ergonomics (including the screen). The fold out screen is awesome and I have no trouble viewing it in direct sunlight. It's great to preview videos and twists around for the ubiquitous self portraits too. The Flip and Kodak models are just little boxes that you hold up facing "out" to record. The Toshiba Camileo S20 feels like a real video camera (albeit a really small one) in your hand. It just feels natural to me to record video in this manner.

4) Features - The built in LED light is a nice touch but it's really only useful in very dark conditions for close up subjects. I think it's main utility is to augment the light in low-light situations like around dusk or in a dim room. Useful under some situations and a good feature to have when you need it. The time lapse and slow motion are really fun. You won't find yourself using them very frequently but capturing a great sunset or cloud movement is pretty cool. Why not have the option? The YouTube upload button is a big "who cares?" for me, but users that are interested in this sort of thing may like it. The digital zoom is smooth and doesn't pixelate stuff too much. I'm also surprised at how much I DON'T use the zoom on this camera. The default capture angle is pretty good. Kid's sporting events are the only time I've found that I've used it a lot, and for this application the digital zoom works fine. If I know I'll need the intensive use of optical zoom ahead of time, I bring my regular HD camcorder anyway. The built in 5MP camera isn't great. That being said, I've yet to see a camcorder with a decent still camera integrated into it. It will do for snapshots, but you won't be using the pics for your holiday cards. I'm not sure why this is, probably something to do with the image processing and metering on still cameras. Anyway, I didn't expect too much here as my regular size HD camcorder takes stills that are pretty bad too. Bottom line with still pics is that we always have a small point and shoot camera with us in our bag or purse anyway, so this isn't an issue for us. Other features are great, like custom white balance (think skiing or other situations with unique light) and ISO settings. Also the battery is removable and one could conceivably get extra batteries to use when chargers aren't available.

5) Price - at $150 this is a steal, especially when compared to the Flip SlideHD Camcorder which is presently $280! The Sony MHS-CM5 bloggie HD Video Camera has optical zoom but is much larger and more expensive. (It also does not image stabilize in HD mode). The Sanyo VPC-CS1 High Definition Camcorder, which also has optical zoom, is big enough at over an inch thick, that I don't really qualify it as a true pocket video camera model. It's also over one hundred dollars more expensive.

6) Extras. Wall charger included, mini-HDMI cord included, mini tripod included, RCA AV cord included, ArcSoft software included (it's actually pretty decent too), nice case included. What's not to like here!

7) Recording Media and Format. One great feature is the SD card format which means that on vacation you can take multiple cards with you rather that a laptop for archiving. The Flip doesn't have removable/changeable media, which for me was an absolute deal breaker. The recorded file format is AVI which I like for video editing applications. Oh also, the lack of an integrated USB connector is actually a big plus for me. I'd rather use a cord to connect to the computer, and the USB mini port doubles as a charger. Our cell phones use this format, so I already have car chargers for this camera! Who want's to struggle with plugging the recorder body directly into the computer - my computer is on the floor in a cabinet. The Arcsoft software is pretty darn intuitive for burning DVDs and uploading to the web. Any minimally computer literate individual will not have an issue and the user manual for the camera and software is really quite good - it was obviously written by a fluent English speaker and not software translated from Japaneses.

Criticisms:

A lot has been written in on-line reviews about the confusing menu system. The menu system structure is fairly intuitive and resembles that of most full sized video cameras, but the navigation buttons within the menu tree are not. OK, so I had to remember that when in the menu mode one of the buttons advances, a different one goes up one level, and the record button selects choices. It's really not that hard or big a deal. As much as we find ourselves using this video recorder, we have no issues with remembering navigation buttons and navigation.

I wish . . .

1. there were optical zoom (but I'm willing to live with digital zoom and a much smaller unit - a trade off that's worth it in my opinion. I've found that I don't use zoom all that much anyway.)

2. there were zoom and image stabilization available in 1080p mode. (Most pocket video cameras don't have this either. . . no big deal to me really as I've found 780p mode looks great and saves on recording space on the SD card. The recorders that have the features at 1080p are much larger units and really not honestly classifiable as "pocket" video recorders)

3. this took better still shots, but as I mentioned, no video recorder does this well. If you want to take still photos, use a camera that's made for the job.

In all, I'm very satisfied with this purchase. This unit is small and light and packed with features, some you'll use and others that you may experiment with once in a while, but are nice to have when and if the need arises. Compared to other models referenced and linked in this review, this model has almost every feature but optical zoom, and the ones having this are much larger and not really "pocket" models (and they are a lot more expensive). I expect to get about 2 years out of this product and by then the next generation of pocket video cameras will integrate even more features (wireless transfer, optical zoom, smart phone integration etc. . ). Until then this product is perfect for my needs. Toshiba Camileo S20 Full-HD Camcorder Bundle (Silver/Black) - Toshiba - Camcorder - Hd Camcorder - High Definition'

Postal Scale

I was so tired of my daily trips to the post office to ship products. I read so many great reviews on this scale and decided to purchase it. It works perfect, the scale is accurate. I love that it was half the price as the ones you can buy at the post office. And I love that it weighs up to 35lbs! You will not be disappointed with this scale! Weighmax 2822-35 lbs capacity, Black, postal shipping scale

GREAT PRODUCT !! Easy to use, very accurate - almost exact so far when compared to USPS scale. Makes it much easier to estimate what postage is and saves time at the post office. Real handy when estimating weight of Ebay sales.

This was a pretty cheap scale. I wanted to weigh envelopes and packages at work so I could just use stamps instead of waiting in line at the post office. It does the job and seems to weigh accurately, as I haven't had anything returned without enough postage. I'm using it with batteries and have done so for about 5 months without having to change them, although I only use it a couple times a week, so hopefully the batteries will last a good long while. The power cord it comes with is kind of short. It would be nice if you could program it with shipping charges so you could see the price for shipping, rather than just the weight, but that's probably a feature that would add more cost to it. Every time I turn it off it defaults to grams, and I weigh in ounces, so I wish it would stay on my selection, but that's only a minor inconvenience. Overall nothing fancy but it's cheap and does the job of weighing stuff.

I am a seller on Amazon. I find that the postal scale saves me time and money as I can print the label with tracking ability right at my computer. The postal scale is easy to work and I have had no problem working them and even checked the product with the post office to see for accuracy and each time right on. No need to stand in long lines at the post office to mail orders. The size is just right small and takes up less room on my desk than the printer does.'

Sterling Silver - pearl earrings, jewelry

I bought these earrings to wear for every day use and they are perfect for that. They are not too big and don't overpower a small person(like me.) My only complaint is that they are a little less round than the picture shows, but i still enjoy them. Sterling Silver Freshwater Cultured White Button Pearl 5.5-6mm Stud Earrings

I love these earrings! The price is perfect and the color matched most of my pearl necklaces which is a relief because that's why I bought it. It's really cute and dainty once you put it on and does not overshadow your necklace because it's the perfect size. Plus I got a lot of compliments on them.

I got these to wear in a friend's wedding - they ended up being too small so I had to get another pair, but they were a great deal and they're still super cute. Just think of these as "mini pearls" and you'll have a good idea what to expect

i got this and one full set of pearl jewelry from seller SilverSpeck.com on amazon.

on set jewelry some of the pearls color are dull & pealed off... and set is sticky as if it is used one.. Though the ear studs are pretty, but considering their pearl quality; also by reading comment, i feel like pearls can fall of anytime from stud. have return that set..

Aside from the backs to the earrings being too loose these earrings are perfect. My grandmother wanted simple pearl studs for her birthday to go with one of her outfits and these are perfect. They are beautiful and she loves them, and I loved the price. She lost the back to one of them because it simply fell off but luckily she has plenty of those. - Pearl Earrings - Jewelry - Pearls - Freshwater Pearls'

Lga1155 - i5, p67

Easy to install since it is the retail version with HSF and thermal compound already installed and in the package. With the GPU built in I am pulling little power (50 watts) in my HTPC system with 3 hard drives, a PCIe lan card and an Asus P8H67-M motherboard.

Processor has plenty of power to handle my HTPC needs plus allows the server to handle other tasks at the same time without a hiccup. Intel Core i5 Processor i5-2500 3.3GHz 6MB LGA1155 CPU BOX80623I52500

This new "Sandy Bridge" processor is providing excellent performance for a $200.00 CPU (especially cost effective since the GPU is onboard--no graphics card is required). It is installed in a computer with 8GB of RAM used for typical business applications running simultaneously and occasional audio/visual processing. So far, no complaints. Windows 7 (64 bit) boots quickly and CPU utilization overall remains low most of the time even under moderate multitasking load. Some reviews mention the inadequacy of the heatsink/fan included, but mine hums along just fine at about 30 degrees (Celcius). Be aware that there is a known defect in Intel's supporting chipsets (P67, H67) that will require certain motherboards to be replaced mid-2011 when the updated chipsets become available, so do your research before purchasing. The defect is not in the CPU itself.

A comment for those of you ordering from other suppliers using their free shipping options who are used to receiving the product(s) in the next day or so anyway...I ordered this CPU on 1/17/2011 using Amazon's free shipping option and it was delivered on 1/25/11. (This is not a complaint--I understood the level of service--just a "heads up" to those of you who might presume faster delivery based on experiences with other vendors.)

It's that epoch already...

Yes...

Bethesda is launching an "Elder Scrolls" game late this year... oh boy. About the only tech release that is able to make me rush into upgrading my pc.

My previous mobo/proc was an athlon 5400 with msi nvidia 550 mobo and 2 gigs of ddr2 800. Up to this point, and coupled with my trusty GTX 260, that combination just worked. Fallout 3 and new vegas ran on that setup very well.

But still, Skyrim is coming, and nothing irks me more than running an elder scrolls game with an underpowered pc, like i did back when oblivion was released. Not this time, not a chance!

I got this for the upgrade:

* This exact processor (I5 2500, not the 2500k variant which has unlocked multipliers and is more overclocker-friendly)

* P67 mobo from ECS (With Rev B3, IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOU GET THIS VERSION OR FURTHER OF THE CHIPSET as it no longer has the SATA bug)

* a Patriot 4gb 1600 cas9 memory module

**** IN A NUTSHELL ****

This I5 just flies, zips around like a Porsche. First time in almost 12 years that i get an Intel instead of an AMD, and I tell you, this one is worth every penny.

**** PERFORMANCE ****

I've tried a bunch of programs and games on it, some old some new, either in Win7 or Linux (ubuntu 11.04 "natty narwhal"), and I'm yet to find any program that comes close to challenging it. Games, compression apps, you name it, this processor rocks...

From my previous setup to this one, as an example, "Fallout: New Vegas" runs so much more smoothly, at 1920x1080, full antialiasing and details. I guess the proc/memory combo was a bottleneck in my previous setup.

**** THERMAL ****

At first, when I unpacked it, I noticed it comes with the run-off-the-mill heat sink and fan used with the LGA775s, the round aluminum one with the copper core. I was kinda nervous, as this being a quad core processor, I was afraid it couldn't possibly be enough for cooling it. I even thought of scraping the factory thermal wax that comes with it and applying a bit of silver-based thermal grease. As I didn't have any with me, and the prospect of keeping it on the box while i ordered some thermal grease online bugging me, I just plugged it with what came in the box.

Wow, were my fears unfounded!

It doesn't just run cool, it's downright gelid. If the gnome sensor applet i installed is to be believed, under a stress program I wrote no core went over 45 degs C... Are you kidding me? This thing is just amazing, the 32nm process does wonders to the thermal performance.

All in all, if you're considering this CPU as an upgrade, don't ponder it any further, go and buy it, you won't be disappointed! - I5 - Sandy Bridge - Cpu - P67'

Rotary Tool Accessories

Just one of these tools with Dremel brand name is $15 at the store. This product works just as well at a fraction of the price. I received them in just a couple of days and free shipping.....you can't beat that!! SE Diamond Wheel Set 6PC DW13 1/8" Shank

This item exceeded my expectations. I accepted the task of engraving the name of my dog into a fairly large stone to use as a tombstone. I had tried using other tools but was having trouble removing a significant amount of the stone. I tried the diamond cutting disc on the stone and was amazed. It cut through the stone like butter (I kept the stone and wheel wet to help). The wheel eventually lost most of the diamond coating, but I was already finished with the tombstone. And it took only one wheel. I am very pleased with the potential applications of this attachment.

I bought these to cut Pyrex/glass test tubes. They work great and last a long time. I have cut many tubes and am still on the first wheel. Save your money and buy these cheap import blades they are just as good as the Dremel brand in my opinion.

While these are offered as being compatible with all rotary tools, the package states they must be used at low RPM. This is contradictory since rotary tools run in the 5000-30000 RPM range. Another reviewer stated they were listed at 1500 RPM. I did not see that in the ad or on the package. But the low RPM warning is on the cardboard package back along with a requirement to always use water lubricant. By comparison, the comparable Dremel 545 is listed as 15000 to 20000 RPM.

On another subject, other reviewers have said they don't hold up well cutting screws or metal. They are not intended for metal. They are suitable for concrete, brick, porcelain, ceramics and tile.

I purchased these to cut an opening in a glass block (the kind used to make decorative walls). Glass was almost 3/8" thick so I was not expecting the cuts to be easy. These cutting wheels made the job easy. It is essential to keep the cut lubricated and cooled (I used water). In total I made almost 2 linear feet of cut and wore out one of the five wheels. A good product at a great price.

indeed this cutting disk are the best option instead of the dremel 409, i have being cutting a lot of stuff a piece of glass, aluminum shells, wood, and acrylic plastic with just ONE disk and it stills have long life to keep cutting, you wont regret this ones. can't say the same for the 409

Comes with a mandrell and 5 wheels. This set has a very fine grit.

Stated max RPM is 1500, and formally require lubrication with water or oil (otherwise it can overheat, warp, crack, and otherwise send spinning pain death nastiness at your face).

These make a nice, smooth groove or cut. Definitely a bargain price.

I REALLY LIKE THIS PRODUCT. I AM A WIRE-JEWELRY ARTIST WHO WANTED TO EXPERIMENT WITH NEW THINGS. I BOUGHT SOME DIAMOND BITS AND STARTED TO CARVE ON GLASS AND SEMI-PREIOUS GEMSTONES! THIS CUTTING WHEELS ARE INCREDIBLE! THEY CUT EASILY THRU GLASS AND MOST SEMI-PRECIOUS STONES. I HAVE CREATED MANY NEW DESIGNS..THE PRICE AND SHIPPING IS INCREDIBLE! I WILL DEFINITELY GET MORE CUTTING WHEELS SOON.... I JUST WISHED THEY WILL LAST LONGER....BUT THE GOOD THING IS THAT THERE ARE 5 CUTTING WHEELS ON THIS KIT!

I am somewhat torn about how to rate this set. The wheels seem to be of decent quality. I was able to cut two 8X10 mirrors from a large panel with one wheel. The problem and the reason I gave this product a poor rating is because the mandrel stripped completely just as I finished cutting the second mirror. This was not operator error as I know the mandrel was tight before beginning to cut. As I said above though, the wheels are good quality, the mandrel, not so much. It may be possible to use these wheels with a standard Dremel sanding disc mandrel. I haven't tried that yet but at least I would still be able to use the wheels.'

Mouse Mat - mousepads, mouse pads

I was disappointed because I was expecting a slick fast surface like optical mouse pads tend to use. Instead, it is similar to the cushion old-fashioned mouse pad and my optical mouse does not glide across it as well as it does on the harder surfaces. But as of 7/22/12, it is only $4! Waste Of Time And Money - lures, fishing

Tackle box is a lot bigger then I expected. Great size if you have many things to put in it. But dont count on the 136 piece tackle kit to fill it. Save yourself a few dollars and buy the Tackle box that only comes with 62 pieces. Trust me you wont be missing much. Plano Tackle Box - 2 Tray with 136 Piece Tackle Kit

I purchased this exact blue Plano tackle box back in 2002. It's the best tackle box I've ever used. When I bought it in the store, it didn't come with any tackle (and that didn't disappoint me). I was just looking for a new tackle box to store my fishing tackle. I found it with this tackle box. This box has two trays with many individual compartments in each tray to hold your hooks and lures, split shots and sinkers, etc. The bottom area of the box has plenty of space for my mosquito repellant, scissors, gloves, bobbers, split shots, sinkers, and my fishing license. This box is made of very durable hard plastic and it's very reliable. Me and this tackle box have been through a lot together. It hasn't let me down yet!

I highly recommend this tackle box for both beginner and experienced anglers. Good brand.

This item does an adequate job for a low-budget tackle box made of plastic. The 136 piece tackle kit was somewhat of a joke, but about what we expected. They count every hook, sinker, teeny pieces of plastic, etc., to get this amazingly high number. Many of the "lures" and plastic "worms" were useless, especially in our region. You can do better buying the tackle separately; getting just what you need. It's big enough to hold the tackle, tools, and equipment that we need to carry. Nothing special.

So my buddies and I are into our third year ice fishing and I still had yet to get a tackle box. This one was exactly what I needed! It arrived safe and sound, is a good size, and came with a starter fishing kit. And for the price, you can't beat it. - Kids Fishing - Lures - Fishing - Tackle'

Iphone Speakers - ipod speaker, portable speakers

For just over thirty bucks, which is half of its MSRP, this thing is a marvelous value...I was just looking for portability, portability, and portability. Not expecting any incredible sound quality, other than a noticeable improvement over my laptop's built in speakers...and this baby delivers in spades!

Beautiful design and a shocking amount of power (volume) and bass despite its tiny size and lack of an independent AC power supply. Of course this is not going to compete with higher quality powered monitors like the M-Audio Studiophile 40 but hey that baby costs at least four times as much and is almost four times bulkier. Of course it's not going to remotely compete with my audiophile bookshelf speakers and TA amp. Of course you're not going to throw a party with this thing. But for nearfield listening or background listening, or watching a movie or TV, especially when you're travelling, it more than gets the job done and is far more comfortable than wearing headphones.

My only wish is that this came with some sort of clips so that I could rest the speaker on top of my laptop's monitor. Might have to go buy some velcro tape, perhaps. The sound IS tons better if you can position the speaker to be at the same height, or just slightly above, your ear level.

It just kills me that this little baby puts out more or less the same, if not outright better, sound quality than that ridiculous Bose Sound Dock which costs over 10 times as much! I am ordering a second one as a gift for one of my friends, in fact. SimplyVibe SV-S300 2.1 Channel w/ subwoofer Portable Speakers (Gloss White) for iPad, iPod, iTouch, iPhone, MP3 Players, Laptops (Mac/ PC) - (USB Or Battery Powered)

We have several Ipod shuffles and recently I purchased an Ipod Touch for my 16 year old. She needed some speakers for the Touch to use in her bedroom & traveling. Besides the obvious things you look for w/speakers, what we did NOT want was speakers that charged her ipod while plugged in, so I was thrilled to find these speakers. So many speakers charge the ipod - we don't want that. The SimplyVibe S300 I purchased from Amazon is exactly what we were looking for! The white-look is very sharp & matches her white furniture. She loves the speakers & the volume can get plenty loud w/out distortion. Since we already have a usb power adaptor that we use for charging all our ipods (charges faster than a computer) we use it on the speakers (keep it plugged in all the time). The speakers come w/the usb cord, so you plug that into the adaptor & then into the wall electric outlet. They cost around $8 each if you don't already have one & prefer to power your speakers by wall electric outlet rather than computer or batteries.

Since I also purchased the SimplyVibe S350 (from ebay) about a week before the S300, to use in our bathroom w/the Ipod Shuffles, I'll give you a quick comparison. Both SimplyVibe speakers have great sound and are capable of playing at louder, distortion-free volumes than the speakers I already had (one was an isound brand, the other Shower Media Player). The S350 is more versatile (more music options)but the multi-use play/pause/power buttons are confusing. The S350 comes w/a rechargeable lithium battery, which is a nice plus (not included w/the S300-probably part of the reason the S300 costs less). The white S300 has very straight-forward, 3 easy to understand, buttons. Both are sleek, nice looking & feel like quality workmanship. Much nicer than what I had!

This little speaker system exceeded my expectations. It has much better sound than I expected in such a small speaker. It is very easy to set up. Just plug it into your USB and it starts to play. Of course there is not a lot of bass. The "subwoofer" is just a woofer and mayby gives an extra octive of bass over my laptop speakers. It is a huge improvement in volume and sound dynamics over laptop speakers. Good stereo imaging for how close the drivers are. Good for nearfield listening. This is definitly more compact and easier to set up than my Bose speakers and for most listening it will do the trick.

The auxilary input does not give the volume level of the usb connection. That defeats one of the reasons I picked this model over the others. It would be nice to have used this for portable sound for picknics and other activities. I do not think it will be loud enough unless pluged into a laptop. It is a big difference in volume.

Overall this is an excellent little product. It did take a few hours to "burn in" the drivers. The sound and bass improved once the drivers loosened up.

I bought this speaker for a custom laptop stand I was making and I wanted something that ran usb that had a subwoofer. this is a great little speaker setup! now obviously, it isn't like my main altec lansing system or my surroundsound system, but for a laptop or netbook, this is a great little speaker! subwoofer isn't loud, but you can definitely hear the bass and tell its there! the speakers get loud enough to where you want to turn it down, but not loud enough to where you can't hear anything. sound quality is very good, better than i expected. nice little speakers

you just have to be careful of two things: one, when you turn the computer off, if you have the batteries in the speaker will stay on until you manually turn it off- easy way to burn through batteries if you use it with your ipod or anything with the headphone jack. two, like a usb controller, you have to have it plugged in and the software ready before you bring up itunes or zune or window media player or whatever you use, or you won't get the sound through the speakers. two little things just to watch, but overall an excellent little speaker system!

Excellent sound. Roger Ebert recommended this based on it's perfect vocal replication, & he was right.

This works well with computers and mp3 players.

My only gripe is that it would have been nice to have an option to power it from a wall plug. - Iphone - Ipod Speaker - Iphone Speakers - Portable Speakers'

Secure Digital - sd card, memory card

In the past, I bought a Transcend 8GB SDHC card for my Canon SD1000 camera. I recently bought the Transcend 16GB SDHC for my new Canon SX20IS. Both cards work very well and I've had no problems with it so far. I wanted to take this opportunity to update my review since my original review was also posted (by Amazon) for the 16GB card. This is because the only difference between these two cards is the different capacity. So, if you're in the market for an affordable high quality SDHC card, this may be the one for you. Sorry, I kind of sounded like a used car salesman right there, didn't I? I assure you that I don't work for Transcend. But, here's why I think this card is awesome:

Pros:

-Affordable!

-Large capacity

-Class 6 read/write speed (which is very fast... but is no longer the fastest class available)

-Lifetime warranty (at least that's what the package says :)

-Transcend is a reputable company that's been making memory products for a very long time. ( I swear to the tech Gods that I don't work for them!) Other reputable and reliable memory card companies include Kingston and PNY. All three of these companies have been making memory chips for many, many years.

Cons:

- I can' really think of any "Cons" about this card. But here's the 2 closest things I can come up with right now: (1) "Class 6" is no longer the fastest speed available and (2) This card does NOT make coffee for you in the morning, do your dishes for you, give you compliments when you're having a bad day, or magically improve your photography skills.

IMPORTANT SPECIAL NOTES ABOUT SDHC MEMORY CARDS:

-SDHC cards are not compatible with most older SD cameras, SD devices, or SD card readers.

-SDHC cards are rated by speed using different "classes". There are currently 4 data transfer speed classes available for SDHC cards. These classes are "class 2, class 4, and class 6, and the new class 10. For example, "Class 2" would have the slowest read/write speed while "Class 6" has the fastest read/write speed. So if you have a device in which speed may play a crucial role, make sure you buy a higher "class" SDHC card. Please note that this SDHC card no longer has the fastest read/write speed available. There is now a new class, called "Class 10". Class 6 has a minimum read/write speed of 6MB/sec... while Class 2 has minimum speed rating of 2MB/sec, and Class 4 is 4MB/sec. Starting to see the pattern?

SO WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "SD CARDS" AND "SDHC CARDS?

SDHC is basically an upgrade to the older SD cards. The reason they upgraded it was to achieve greater data transfer speeds AND capacity than previously possible with normal SD cards... and to do this, they had to redesign the card (which is why it's not compatible with normal SD devices). This was necessary because digital cameras and digital video cameras these days have higher resolutions, which equate to larger file sizes and faster data transfer needs.

Now that many digital cameras also can record HD video, you may consider getting a larger capacity card because video takes much more space than photos. The size of the video varies from camera to camera depending on what resolution and video compression the camera uses. If you plan on taking lots of video (especially HD video), I would consider getting at least a 16GB card. Check your camera specifications to see how many minutes per Gig of memory your camera can capture ...to gauge how big of a memory card you'll want to get to meet your needs.

Special Note on regular SD Cards:

If you primarily take casual photos and don't need a exceptionally fast read/write capable card, you should know that newer cameras that take "SDHC" cards will also work with older normal "SD" cards. These older cards are cheaper than the new SDHC cards, so this may be something to consider. So to sum things up, newer cameras will take SDHC and regular SD cards, but older cameras that use SD cards may not be able to use SDHC cards. This is because newer technology is usually made to be compatible with older technology (the technical term used to describe this is "backwards compatibility") ... but older technology may not have the hardware necessary to run newer tech (technical term used is "obsolete"... just kidding! ;)

I hope I haven't confused everybody by going into this much detail, but I can't help being the nerd that I am. If you are confused, don't hesitate to comment on this post and I will try my best to answer your questions. Also, any feedback is always welcome!

Conclusion: Buy the card if you have a new device that uses SDHC. It rocks! (This message has been approved by the "Duke of New Mexico") Transcend 16 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS16GSDHC6

UPDATE - March 2, 2010: This review was originally written for the 4 GB class 6 SDHC card, but the reviews have been grouped for all class 6 SDHC cards in the 4, 8, 16 and 32 GB sizes. All the cards should perform similarly since they are all class 6 and all made by Transcend. However, I will have to check which cards I have used hands on. I believe I only own the 4GB and 8GB cards. I will update the review further. If you have concerns regarding the 16GB or 32GB sizes, you should seek out the reviews tagged with the product links from those cards.

The Transcend 4GB SDHC CARD (Class 6) is a great card for the price. I was at first a little skeptical about the brand, but I buy way too many memory cards to ignore a good price when I see one. And I'm happy to report that I've experienced decent performance and reliability issues with this card. That's as compared to other cards I own including SanDisk, PNY and Kingston.

As long as your devices are compatible with the SDHC format, this card is a good buy. 4 GB is a nice size though I do prefer 8 GB capacity for high capacity storage.

The class 6 speed is the fastest speed available in mass market SDHC cards. Class 6 guarantees minimum transfer speeds of 6 MBs, but I've gotten speeds up to 20Mbs! That makes this card perfect for storing pictures in RAW image formats.

The Class 6 speed is on par with the Sandisk Extreme III cards that on average are about $15 to $20 more per card. If you don't have an SDHC reader, you may opt to get the package with a reader included to download your pics. If not you can just transfer your pics directly from your camera with your card still inserted. An SDHC card reader can be bought separately if your PC doesn't have a compatible slot.

General SDHC and SD Card Tips

There are a few tips that I've learned the hard way through buying TOO MANY different memory cards.

1. Make sure your device is compatible with the card! Even in regular SD cards, some older electronics aren't compatible with that large of a size (2 GB). In terms of SDHC cards, make sure your camera or other device is SDHC compatible. SDHC is different from regular SD and only newer devices tend to have built-in compatibility

2. Once you install this in your camera or device, you will generally want to format the card with your compatible device's interface. That is because the standard formats for certain devices, particularly Canon, are different from the factory installed format

3. Just like your devices, most computer SD card readers are not compatible with the SDHC format. So use a card reader or download the pictures via USB connection to the camera with the card still installed.

4. For some reason, placing the card in the locked position allows some older laptops to still read it. This is just to be used in a pinch however, and it won't apply to all systems

5. If you did not properly format your card, you may be able to save things to it and then have them "disappear." If this happens to you, make sure you use the software recovery tools BEFORE you try to save anything else to your card. That way, you can retrieve your images without over-writing them.

6. Make sure you know what you are going to use this card for. Once you have set up everything and ensured it's all compatible, you still have to decide on speed. If you are using this for storing RAW images instead of JPEGs or HD video, step up to the faster class 6 speed format if you can afford it.

7. If you are going to pay more for a faster speed, make sure your device can benefit from it. I've read, for example, that Kodak cameras are set to a fixed voltage and cannot go faster than standard speed. So the extra cash spent on Class 4, 5, or 6 is basically wasted.

Conclusion

It's great to have several extra cards on hand just in case. This 4 GB card is a nice performer. If you have a high capacity camera (10 Megapixels or more) and are storing videos or RAW images, the extra cash for the 8GB card is worth it. Or you may want to step up to the larger 16 GB size that is now available.
