Photography Instruction - creative photography, photography

I have owned many photography books over the years and Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Photography Field Guide" will be the book I pack with me from here on out.

The book is organized into the 11 chapters detailed below and each chapter is organized into smaller sections which help you seek out the specific topics you want to review.

1) A Few Digital Basics - Chapter topics range from file format and shooting in RAW to a gem of a section on white balance that explained better in 2 pages how this setting can really improve my photos than anything else I have come across in the past.

2) Exposure - Topics in this chapter include exposure explanations, the photographic triangle, creative exposures, and more. Bryan is a master at de-mystifying exposure and you will improve your photography with this chapter.

3) Aperture - This chapter does much more than just explain the effects of proper aperture settings, Bryan teaches you how aperture helps you tell the story you intend to with the photo.

4) Shutter Speed & ISO - This chapter offered one of the best explanations of how ISO effects your photos I have found since being introduced to digital photography and I find the section on "motion in low light" to be very good. Bryan also explained the relationship between apeture and shutter speeds in an easy to understand and apply in the field format.

5) Learning To See - This chapter covers a lot of ground on lenses and selecting the right lens for the right shot. Advice sections such as "shooting up" and "looking down" are helpful if you are looking for new ways to shoot but the photos included throughout the book are the best way to get new ideas for framing your shots.

6) Designing A Striking Image - This chapter is the largest in the book and covers more than I can go into. Suffice it to say that this chapter is all about composition, choosing your subject, getting creative, etc. These kinds of chapters have always been inspiring to me because the photos are amazing and Bryan does not let you down here. If you aren't motivated to get up and grab your camera after reading these sections you should probably put it down for good.

7) The Importance Of Light - This chapter covers a lot of ground from the best light, to low light, to backlight, etc. I found the material on exposure settings for various light conditions helpful and I was surprised that HDR exposure was covered in the detail it was...though not enough to start shooting HDR in my opinion. It seems as though you would still want to buy an HDR book to get into that in earnest.

8) Close-Up Photography - This chapter is a pretty good introduction to macro and it did answer many questions I have had. I have been flirting with getting more into macro and this chapter has helped me get just a little bit closer to making the investment.

9) Photographing People - This chapter is really about being a more professional, courteous photographer when people are the subject. This is the smallest chapter at just 7 pages and Bryan uses most of them to play armchair psychologist at getting people to like you taking their picture so you can get the best photos possible.

10) Unconventional Techniques - This chapter covers various "tricks of the trade" such as "making rain" or unusual ways to mount your camera and it will only really be useful on a lazy weekend day when you can't find anything else to do or photgraph. Fun info here but basically a bonus chapter.

11) Useful Tools - Here is the chapter that every photo book has and it basically feeds the gear addiction...tripods, filters, and more...

It is impossible to get into all of the details that you will find in this book, and at 400 pages you will not be short of info to learn from and grow as a photographer.

A couple other comments about the book itself...it is very high quality with good, heavy, high gloss paper that make the photos really pop of the pages. The book is very well built too and I can see that it will last for many years to come being lugged around in my camera bag and on trips. Also, this has to be the most compact and small 400 page book I have ever seen which is great because I do want to carry it with me when I go.

And the photos...they are simply spectacular. I have found myself just flipping through the pages to look at the photos and that can be just as instructive as the text in my opinion. Bryan has selected excellent examples to demonstrate his topics/lessons and all of the photo captions have detail about the photo's exposure settings which I like because it helps reinforce the lessons being taught.

I do not think anyone will be disappointed with this book and unless you are a seasoned pro already you will learn and grow as a photographer when you read and re-read this book's thorough chapters. Speaker Systems - clock radio, ipod dock

Ok, I bought this from a local store, but I wanted to review it here to hopefully help someone else.

I needed the following....

1. Ipod connection

2. Ability to turn all lights off on the clock

3. Ability to listen to the ipod to go to sleep (in this case, white noise) and then have it switch to the buzzer alarm.

4. I needed a radio.

This does all that, and looks really nice! I need my room as dark as possible, and so this was awesome for that. Also, I sleep with a white noise machine, but I wanted to get rid of it, and just have an alarm clock on my night stand for a clean look. I also wasn't a fan of the white noise that the machines made (i swear i heard voices in it). I was able to make my own on my computer and put it on my ipod as a playlist, so it plays all night. Then, when the buzzer alarm goes off, it shuts down the ipod and turns on the buzzer alarm.

Also, I can listen to the radio before going to bed, which is very nice.

Keep in mind, this is not some booming ipod radio and the sound quality is so-so, but for what I need, it was either this, or some $75-$100 iHome... Memorex Mi4390BLK Clock Radio for iPod

I love this little Clock Radio for the IPOD.

It sounds wonderful.

Even though it's a small, the sound it gives off when I use my IPOD is pretty LOUD. I was looking for a clock radio to connect with my IPOD and came across this one and I'm so happy I did.

The radio is only FM station ( no AM staion)

The clock numbers are a soft blue color which you can dim really low if the blue color bothers you.

You can wake up to the alarm clock, radio or your IPOD.

Everything is very easy to set up.

It's perfect!!!

For the price it's a steal.

I needed a clock/radio for our baby's room that could use my iPod Nano that I had bought in 2008 (but was quickly replaced by my Iphone). It comes with a remote that does basic functions (off/on, play, pause, next, previous, etc.)

I thought the sound quality was 3.5 out of 5 stars. I didn't expect much for the price, but I was generally surprised at sound.

Because the remote is limited you'll need to select your playlist, artist, etc. on the iPod's menu's first, then you can use the remote to toggle between the next song or previous.

Overall, this clock fit my needs perfectly.

I just received my Memorex Mi4390BLK. My comments about it as follow: Just few words to describe it; easy to set it up, digital clock with big numbers. Easily you can turn display off at nights, nice remote control and sounds good on fm radio and ipod.

I just dissapointed when i tried to hear my ipod touch 3rd Gen, after it was plugged there wasn`t charge and sound. After that I realized that Memorex alarm only works on ipod classic and ipod nano old generations.

The price is one of the best options.

Buy one so you won`t dissapointed

Works well - easy to set time (although I did have to look at the directions briefly). Sound quality from iPod is good; only have to have the volume on 3 or 4 to hear it well. Imagine that it could get quite loud. Connects to my 30G first-generation iPod video easily, charges it quickly. The blue backlight is quite bright at night, but can be turned off completely. Alarm works well, although you can't listen to your iPod before you go to sleep and then have it wake you up to a different playlist - have to set the playlist you want to wake you before you go to bed. Makes a slight high-pitched humming noise when you put your ear up to it in complete silence, but nothing that would ever bother me and my hearing is fairly good. Haven't gotten a chance to use the radio yet. A good, solid iPod clock radio, and nice and small as well.

Not bad for the price. I paid $20.00 for mine at $taples on Black Friday. Directions specifically mention using an iPod dock adapter "that comes with your iPod". (My 4th generation iPod Touch does not have one, so off to the Apple store I go.) Has 1/8 stereo mini input in as well.

I just got this in the mail today just a few days after ordering it! I just plugged it in and will compare it to my last ihome of 4 years. The ihome was great, with great features and sound, but the click wheels stopped responding and it would take me at least 5 minutes to set my alarm.

Anyway... this doesn't have quite the same sound quality as my ihome, however it is sufficient and FINE for an alarm clock. It's loud or quiet enough and I haven't used the alarm yet but i like how there aren't click wheels and it's quick to set. You can dim the light and the whole system doesn't take up as much space as an ihome. The remote is cute too. You can't have presets for radio stations like the ihome, but I didn't use those very much anyway. There is also only one alarm you can have set, unlike the ihome where there's 2. However for less than 1/3 of the price of the iHome I would say that this is a better value. Taking it to school with me in the fall!

For years I have been an insomniac, and waking up to an alarm clock has made life a miserable loop of insomnia, only to have to rely on a clock that will snap me out of bed- only to leave me jolted, irritated, and miserable before my head even leaves my pillow. I have always been hesitant of getting a new alarm clock for fear that it won't be able to get me out of bed.

I have almost exclusively been using the buzzer alarm- I put the volume at a fairly high setting.

HOWEVER- dream of all dreams, I have been slowly readjusting to waking up to a far less jolting and misery inducing alarm! The buzzer is an ascending series of beeps that aren't quite annoying, but eventually are loud enough and at a rate of speed that can't be ignored.

Not only that, but the sleep is set for 10 minutes and some days I only slap it twice, and other days I protest and use it 3 or 4 times. BUT- in the last few months I've been using it I have been gradually adapting to waking up to a quieter and less severe alarm, which has left me FAR LESS irritable and grumpy in the mornings.

The same with the iPod alarm, it starts playing the music gently, then if you don't attend to the clock right away it starts to gradually crank up the volume.

LOVE IT!

My ONLY complaint is with the backlight- there are 3 settings, well, four if you count that you can turn it off- however, it seems to be blaring, slightly less blaring, and not so bad. I am severely sensitive to light when falling asleep- I have to cover the tiny little power lights on electronics to fall asleep. So even in the lowest power setting for the backlight, I have to make a tent of the blankets to block direct light from the alarm clock.

Which leads me to my next complaint, if you hit the snooze button on the clock, and you have had the light off throughout the night- you can't immediately turn on the backlight. You have to wait a period of time before you can hit it again to turn it on, which doesn't help if you're trying to get the benefit of using the snooze button AND make sure that you're not over sleeping (I'm in SE AK, it's usually pitch black at 0630 from October-April)

BUT... otherwise, I'm totally happy with the clock, and LOVE the remote. Woohoo!

Thank you for a great product! - Alarm Clock - Ipod Alarm Clock - Ipod Dock - Clock Radio'

Cell Phone Holster

When they put in the word LARGE into the title, they are not kidding!

I am using this case for a Samsung Convoy and there is about 33% extra space in the case. Using a bit of black thread I shortened the clip-strap so the flap would fit tighter over the opening and that has helped a lot. A more expensive case would have a pull-tab adjustment. As-is, it is certainly large enough for one of the Midland GMRS gxt1000 two-way radios.

The case has a horizontal pass-through channel so you can wear it horizontally on a belt, or vertically using the belt-loop, or vertically using the metal clip.

The chromed-steel belt clip appears to be fastened onto the case well, and will fit a belt of about 1 1/4" or so. Since most cell phone cases I've had have failed at the clip, it looks like this one might actually last a couple of months!

The pouch flap also has a hidden magnetic closure in addition to the pinch-release clip. The little carabiner is pretty lightweight but looks to be adequate for medium-duty activities.

Remembering the price I paid, I am rating this higher than if it were selling for say, $20 or more. It's not a piece of actual duty gear, such as 5.11 or Blackhawk, but for civilian use, light professional and hobby/hiking it'll probably hold up OK.

Two days of use and it's hanging in there- I am very hard on cases and outboard gear such as this. If it blows out sooner than expected I'll (try to) post back. Samsung SCH-I730 waterproof canvas case with heavy duty

This case will fit a Sonim XP3 / Land Rover S1 "with room to spare"

so you can roll up your ear buds in a little plastic bag

and carry them with you in the case underneath the phone,

lifts the phone up so its easier to grab, fits perfect and snugs everything up

It also has a magnetic flap along with the plastic luggage style locking clasp.

Sturdy, good, and cheap---as in inexpensive.

Solid construction. I wanted a phone case that had a belt loop because the clips just don't secure the phone and mine was dropping all over the place. Then I wanted a secure clasp. The velcro and (worse) the magnet closures also were not secure.

Yeah, with that on my shopping list, go and find a case with those features. I couldn't until I checked here at Amazon.

Very satisfied.

Mind you...check that the case will fit your phone. I am 20th century in that my phone does not need 1,000 apps, so it's just a ruggedly built, army-style "Convoy" from Verizon. its shape is nothing like the iphone, so check dimensions to be sure.

I am entirely pleased. I hope you are, as well.'

Ipad Accessory - ipad accessory, ipad charger

Sweet! I get to be the first to tell you all that this is just a fantastic car charger for the iPad or your iPod or your iPhone OR anything else you have a car charger for! This has the dual ability to charge your Apple iThing as well as the opening to plug some other car charger into the back and charge it as well! Two at the same time from the one car "cigarette lighter" port. If you are looking for an accessory to "charge" an iThing... look no further as YOU HAVE FOUND IT HERE! Could NOT be happier with this purchase (other than the fact I paid $10 more at the Apple Store than here at Amazon.) Griffin Technology PowerJolt Plus 2 amp Power Charger for iPad, iPhone and iPod (Black)

I love this charger. It does a great job of powering/charging my iPad in my car. The charge is efficient (as fast as Apple's supplied AC charger), and I love that there is an extra power outlet included inline, which also works great. There isn't much to say about a DC car charger. It does what it is supposed to do, and does it well, while not hogging a power outlet (since it provides an additional one inline). What more can you ask of it?

It's a great product, well constructed and does the job well, while saving outlet space. It is, however, a little long; it *just* fits in the area where the 12v charger is. The plug can be a little loose, but for me, who does not change devices often, this works just fine.

I got this to recharge my iPad when traveling. Good quality product. I like the fact that you can piggy back another charger into it. If it had a detachable USB charge cable it would get a perfect 5 stars for me.

The standard cigarette-lighter-type pass-through socket fits my old Belkin F8Z446 Micro Auto Charger with Charge Sync Cable for iPhone and iPod...now I can charge my new iPad and the old iPod at the same time. I just wish it came with a separate sync cable instead the integrated coiled cable. But it is still a good charger...4 and a half stars for me.

I have not had any issues with this charger. It does what it is supposed to do without any problems. It does not make my iPhone hot. No part of it gets hot. The extra outlet on the back of the plug is great for keeping my GPS plugged in. Good buy! Amazon has it for less than the Apple store. Highly recommend!

For some reason my Alpine head unit stopped charging my iphone 4, so I bought this as a supplemental power source. About 30% of the time when I connect it, the phone says that it is unable to charge with this accessory. Plugging and unplugging a few times usually resolves the issue, but it is pretty annoying. Not 100% sure wether to blame Griffin or Apple though. - Charger - Ipad Accessory - Car Charger - Ipad Charger'

Bostitch - nailers, floor nailer

I have just finished installing a little over 200 sq.ft. of 3/4" walnut flooring and so far the stapler has worked without any problems. At the pace I am going it has saved me a lot of money vs. renting. I have about another 300 sq.ft. to go and will update this review went it is completed. NuMax SFL618BR 3-in-1 Flooring Stapler/Nailer with White Rubber Mallet

Excellent!!! Installing approxiamately 1500sq ft of tigerwood bamboo flooring and the NuMax SFL618BR 3-in-1 Flooring Stapler/Nailer with White Rubber Mallet has been flawless thus far... We are about half way done and no problems... Excellent product...

I bought this to install a 3/4" x 3 1/4" solid maple floor in about 1,000sq ft of space. Aside from it jamming once, I did not have any problems with it at all. The only time it did not sink the 2" staples was when I got tired and didn't hit it hard enough. I set the compressor to 95psi and it worked great. The mallet worked great and I just turned it around to tap the wood planks in with the angled hammer side of it. I would think this is ideal for a DIY'er.

I bought this to do 400+ sqft of flooring and did not want to rent a tool. At this price it was an easy choice to buy vs. rent. The tool has worked very well. I used the oil it came with in the air intake as you normally would to oil an air tool. Even so I did experience a couple of jams early and quickly realized that plunger shaft was not popping back up as easily as it should because there was paint oversprayed onto the shaft. I squirted some oil onto the plunger shaft and never had another jamb.

If you buy this tool I suggest you drop a bit of oil on the outside of the plunger shaft before using it and you will be very very happy.

Great product! My husband and I ordered this nailer for LESS than we paid to rent one twice.

We decided to put hardwood floors in most of the 1st floor of our new house, and being new at flooring, we figured we'd have it all done in a couple of weekends. Wrong!! We then borrowed a friend's manual stapler/nailer, but it took a lot of effort to use.

The NuMax is reliable and very easy to use. In addition, it uses several types of nails and staples, so we were able to not only use the huge box of nails we purchased at the rental store but also the smaller box of nails we bought for the manual nailer.

Just started using it this weekend; about 500 perfect nail shots and no failures or jams.

Hearing protection is a must. This thing is very loud. But well worth it for the labor savings of having the air drive the nail to an exact depth every time.

The NuMax Flooring Stapler was well worth the purchase. I couldn't be happier. The nailer performed well and it was a much better than renting one. The floor looks beautiful and now I have a tool for future projects. I highly recommend this product. I used bostitch 2" L cleats to install my floor and the tool never miss fired. There were a couple of times that I didn't hit the striker head hard enough and the cleat didn't set, but that was totally my fault. Don't know how other brands work, but this one was worth every penny.

Just received my NuMax and installed the first 150 feet of 3/4" prefinished oak flooring. Not a single mis-fire or marred piece of flooring (and this was the first time I have used a flooring nailer). I have about 1,500 feet to go.

I set my compressor at 110 psi and every nail was set perfectly. The handle on the mallet got a little loose near the end, but a wedge fixed that. A good product for the price and definitely better than paying high rent on a worn out nailer from a rental place.

I do high end carpentry and always seemed to borrow a flooring gun for the odd and end times i had to lay flooring. Lately I've ended up with flooring jobs over 10k sq ft and finally decided to buy one. For a $150 bucks I figured I'd try it 3000 ft in not a single jam, had to wedge mallet head (came loose) But that's it. Cool toy that seems tough!

This is an awesome nailer! I hammered 2 inch staples through my hard maple flooring with ease. I didn't want to buy the expensive Bostitch nailer as I am just a do-it-yourselfer. Anyway, I would highly recommend this nailer if you need a reliable piece of equipment at half the cost. Ironically, my neighbor bought a nailer for his flooring and it is falling apart already. You don't need expensive brand names, just something that works. - Nailers - Floor Nailer - Hardwood Flooring Nailer - Hardwood Floor Nailer'

Iphone 3g Accessories

This case is awesome! I often have a rather large rubber protective case around my iPhone. I work in a professional environment where I cannot be sliding a phone in and out of my shirt pocket or pants pocket. This case looks professional, allowing me to keep the iphone on my belt to use as needed, plus I can keep my protective case around it! Very secure case - I will be ordering more to have extra on hand and for friends! PREMIUM SPECIAL Apple Iphone 4gb 8gb 16gb 32gb Perfect Fit Leather Case (All Versions Including 3g)

I ordered this immediately after the first day of my iPhone4 purchase. This one is certainly more than the worth of money you would spend. I compared and the same case is sold for $9.99 or more almost everywhere, including Amazon, Ebay or possibly any other website or store.

Design is good, carry the phone well, has a magnetic flap which is better than Velcro. You can snap it in your belt or just hang it on. Surely great for the female wallet's too. Don't think twice just order it. It does what it is meant for.

I had a similar case for my 3G phone and it pretty much lasted about a year. I tried to re buy the same case and this one lasted less than a month before it ripped and my phone dropped to the ground. This one seems to be made a lot cheaper than my last one. If you are not rough with it one bit it should be fine but if you lead a busy lifestyle where your constantly taking your phone in and out of the case I would suggest spending a little more and getting a heartier case.

The cases sent ARE NOT AS PICTURED. The case and the picture are BROWN, not black as described and have a plastic logo on the front flap.. What do we have to do to get accurate descriptions so we don't waste our time ordering items based on the descriptions and pictures that we will not get?

Consider the seller carefully before ordering...

Great product for the price. It doesn't look cheaply made, which was my biggest concern about buying a case for this price. It's a bit too large for the iPhone 4 alone, but it seems custom made to fit an iPhone with a bumper or skin. As others have reported, there is a bit of a chemical-type smell, but it's very faint and will probably fade completely in a couple of days.

I bought two of these for my iPhone 4 and my wife's. We love them. They are an incredible value. The clip is really tight and strong. Never falls out. The fit is good. The phone never falls out of the case. The phone fits with or without a bumper or light case on the phone. They look good. The leather gets a bit loose with wear, but not bad. But who cares? At this price, you could buy a new one every month!

I got the case in the mail yesterday. Just in time too, because that is when my new iPhone arrived. The case fits perfectly. This an easy decision folks. Just buy it. And the best part is that you can't beat the price.'

Cable Organizer - wall plate, gang recessed plate

I've had this kit sitting next to the TV for a week and finally decided to get going and get the TV set mounted today before the wife got home. She was tickled when she saw the nice results.

Like the other reviewers I found the kit easy to install and the internet video provided a great walk-through. I would however offer the following tips:

1. Before you begin you should test all cables that will be going behind the wall and ensure that they working perfectly. Don't wait till the end and hope everything works out. You should also carefully measure for the needed lengths of the cables that will be hidden. It's frustrating to almost get to the finish line only to realize that your HDMI cable is 2' short. Add a foot or two to your measurements; you can always tuck any excess into the wall.

2. The kit supplied power connector (the upper one that your TV's power cord plugs into) is rather stiff. I found it useful to plug and unplug the TV's power cord into it six or seven times before mounting it, and that payed off with a smoother connection at the end of the installation.

3. A pair of needle-nose pliers is very useful for bending wire ends into "hooks" for the screw-down connections to the upper power connector, as the supplied electrical wire is very rigid.

4. The product installation video shows the "Wings" of the electrical boxes and plates as being secured with a turn or two of the supplied screws. This gave me the impression that the screws for the wings just needed a couple of turns and then the wings would then pop into position and lock the box or plate into place. My experience was that the screws have to be continuously tightened until the wings at last are snug against the drywall and the plate or box is locked into place. This might be a no-brainer to some but I thought I'd point it out for the rest of us.

5. Take your time and measure and mark the locations of your cut-outs carefully so that both plates line up neatly. You get bonus points if you use a small bubble level when tracing your cut-outs so that both are nice and plumb. I mean, why not do the job right? Yep, you are doing this job yourself to save money, but don't let anyone looking at your work think, "Hmm...a pro would STILL have done a much nicer job!"

6. If this is your first time mounting a TV on a wall you might be tempted to try and finish the job by hefting the TV into place by yourself (if working alone). Unless your TV is very small this is a mistake. Mounting this 40" TV by myself was a real pain and a bit foolish.

Bonus Tool: An oscillating multi-tool makes beautiful clean cuts in drywall like a hot knife through butter. They can be had for as little as $40.00 bucks these days. Amazon sells them at a good price. Not necessary, but quite useful for a number of household projects. I love mine and it made this job all the easier.

When you are all finished, have a sip of your favorite drink and pat yourself on the back for the hundreds of dollars in TV installation and electrician costs that you just saved! Datacomm 50-3323-WH-KIT Flat Panel TV Cable Organizer Kit with Power Solution (White)

I recently mounted a Plasma TV on the wall and wanted to hide the wires. I initially thought about doing the "not up to code" homeowner solution which is just fishing the TV's power cable behind the wall the same as the HDMI cables. However, I'm a stickler for doing things the right way and just didn't feel comfortable doing something non-code. After investigating the cost and hassle of wiring a new receptacle box into the circuit breaker I found out about this Datacomm product. It was really easy to install, the directions were straight forward and it best of all, it's UL rated and satisfies electrical code. The only suggestion I have would be to flip the bottom outlet upside down when installing the gangbox and outlet cover. That way you make it much easier to string the wires and cables. This tip will make sense once you open up the box and start looking that the directions.

Much like the last reviewer, I wanted to mound my new Vizio 55" television on the wall as well as a soundbar beneath it, but my wife was not going to allow me to do this unless she cound not see any wires. I started doing some research and found the Datacomm products on Amazon; I now feel very luck I did. What a great way to add a flatscreen to old construction. The directions are fantastic (it was a nice touch to include the template for cutting each hole) and the hook-up was as simple as it could be.

I was worried when the product arrived as I did not think all my wires were going to fit in the recessed opening (I had 3 HDMI cables, a VGA cable, S-Video with analog audio, and a Toslink optical cable to fit through the opening behind the television and the bottom opening had all of these with an addition cable to my soundbar opening), but all fit without problem.

The only very minor complaint I would have with this product is the power receptical for television power is very tight. In attempting to hold the television and plug it in, it took a great deal of effort to insert the plug, but it gave me some added comfort that it would not fall out for any reason.

I will be recommending this product to anyone looking to mount their television. - Wall Plate - Gang Recessed Plate - Cable Organizer - Home Theater'

Surge Suppressor - slim, electronics

I had a power surge in my house. The only thing items that got damaged were the ones on this surge protector. It made loud pops, smoked, and arced until I unplugged it. I called file a claim but the policy is such that

1) you only get reimbursed for the value you could resell your damaged products before the damage occurred

2) you have to go to a repair store (lugging your tv and electronics) and pay the repair store to give you a quote ($40 fee) just to have a chance at a refund

3) you have to pay to mail back your surge protector

4) Belkin may request you to mail your damaged devices for them to check at your own cost (seriously, mail my dead tv?!?)

After multiple phone calls with Belkin (whose customer service is polite), I've come to the following conclusions. This is a scam. The $5 surge protectors did their job. My laptops were fine. The expensive surge protector made a mess, let my equipment get toasted and resulted in a lot of hassle that didn't even help me get a replacement tv.

I wouldn't recommend this to an enemy! Belkin BE108200-06 8 Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Telephone Protection

There are a lot of reviews on this product, but I had to add mine. After lightning struck a tree next to our house, our neighbors suffered several appliance failures, including a blown TV. Ours, including our computer survived (plugged into one of these). More amazingly, the outlet this was plugged into blew out of the wall, frying the protector, the TV lost its color for 3 days, but then popped back in and we are still using it. Our electrician says, he's never seen anything like it, but he's recommending this surge protector now.

Good, clean design and layout. Flexible enough to accommodate up to 6 power bricks without blocking the other outlets (4 on the wide face, 2 more on the ends of the narrow face). A "Not Grounded" warning light is a great feature that provides additional peace of mind.

I mounted it on the underside of my desk to get all the wires off the floor. The thoughtful design extends to the keyhole for screw mounting which gives you the option of forward or sideways engagement. It works even better when upside down because the cables hang down instead of draping over.

On the quality side, the on/off switch feels flimsy, and 3 prong, grounded plugs take some effort to pull back out. Belkin probably figured these actions aren't frequent enough to warrant complaint, i.e. most people just plug in, switch on, and forget about it for the next three years, and cost reduced these components to keep the price down. It's a good compromise. I'm very pleased with the product and the price!

I had a lightning strike near my house which wiped out my router, network switch, and motherboard-based network adapter. I had a UPS so assumed I was safe but it looks like I got a voltage spike on my cable tv line which then spread from the router to my ethernet cable. Now, my cable, ethernet, and power connectors are all protected should such a thing ever happen again! Plus, the wide spacing of the outside outlets on this Belkin surge protector allow me to connect all my network gear, two computers and monitors, and my entertainment center. I did considerable research before selecting this surge supressor and am very satisfied.

Inexpensive - filter, lens filter

Looking through it with the naked eye reveals no distortions or imperfections. This is a genuine multi-coated UV filter (test this by looking at a reflection of a light source on its surface: a perfect reflection indicates no coating, a dim reflection indicates a single coating, and a green reflection indicates multiple coatings). Multiple coatings yield greater light transmission through the glass, and less glare, but (and this affects all multi-coated filters from all companies) also pick up dust, fingerprints, and condensation very easily (just holding it on the metal ring with your fingers causes condensation from your perspiration). Hoya HMC Haze UV(0) - Filter - UV - 52 mm

Great filter, good build, glass, multicoated, not overpriced. Everything a filter should be. I've bumped the edge of this filter against hard surfaces more than once and it has not bent the aluminum ring or damaged the lens it was attached to. Good product.

This item turned out to be the right quality and the right price for me (I bought two of them for two lenses). Research convinced me to buy a lens filter that had multi coating on it to go with the lenses that are multi coated. These had good reviews and a reasonable price, so I gave them a try. They showed up in good shape, went on easily, and are now doing exactly what they should be doing... protecting my camera without me noticing the difference.

I bought this item after seeing all the rave reviews for it and have to say I'm a bit disappointed. While the filter itself is fine when brand new, it scratches and smudges easier than most filters I've had at this price point (though it is also optically superior). I have no complaints about the smudges as they come off with some cleaning which is needed for any UV filter at some point, but the scratches render this product useless very quickly. I recommend the Hoya Super HMC Haze UV(0) series over this one in a heartbeat. I don't believe the Super series costs that much more (~$45 for a 67mm filter), and it is much more scratch resistant due to the excellent multi-coated glass.

First thing is first: In terms of optical clarity, this filter gets a 5/5. If you have a good lens, you are screwing yourself if you put a cheap, uncoated filter in front of it. So in that respect, this is a great product.

But secondly, I knew the multi-coated surface was delicate, but, DAMN! I made every effort I could to be careful with the filter from the second I removed it from the case. I took it out in my back yard for about twenty minutes to test out both the filter and my new lens. By the time I got back inside, the glass was fine, but there was a thin 'scratch' in the multi-coating that I could see when I held it up to the light. I don't even know what happened to it because I THOUGHT I was being extremely careful. I haven't noticed anything in my photos yet, but it bugs me that part of the filter isn't multi-coated now. I'm now scared to take my filter anywhere outdoors!

Bottom line: Great filter if you're going to use it under very well-controlled conditions. But if you ever expect ANYTHING solid to accidentally brush the front of your lens, try to consider another solution (maybe an uncoated filter)

I hope I read other reviews about multicoated UV filter much early. I use a normal ... UV Haze filter on my kit lens since the first day, 2 years ago! I can take some sharp pictures, but always feel a masking over the picture and have to use software to touch up. To attack glare I even bought a flower shaped hood. With this Hoya HMC zipped on, I can tell it's more clear through now. Adorama standard shipping is lightning fast. From placing order to getting the filters only took 4 days, including a weekend.

The Hoya Multi-coated filter does not get in the way of excellent photograhps. Cannot detect any reflections or extraneous light from the glass, I cannot detect any difference in image quality in photographs taken with and without the filter. I consider it to be a high quality filter at least for the photo enthusiast.

The Hoya is affordable and seems to be very good quality

This was the most affordable "multi-coated" filter I could find to protect my lens. The next time you're in a camera shop, do a visual comparison between a single and multi-coated filter.

My order with Amazon shipped fast and arrived in perfect condition

Here's an intersting discussion "Do I need multi-coated filters vs mono-coated?"

http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=000Vya

Let me preclude this review by saying I sometimes can be obsessive-compulsive. But even so, this filter is very hard to clean! It is well built and has excellent optics but I probably went through half of my lens cleaning tissue and I'm still not satisfied with how I cleaned this filter. The problem is the filter streaks even after you clean it. I tried different types of cleaners including pre-moistened wipes and even my sensor cleaners but I can't clean this filter to my satisfaction. I ended up actually not using a filter on my lens because of the streaking issue. If you want to read more about this, just google "hoya hard to clean". I'll probably buy B+H if I decide I'd like to use a UV filter. - Hoya - D40 - Lens Filter - Filter'

Office Electronics - fast weigh, office electronics

I purchased this scale to weigh chemicals for amature rocketry. The biggest problem that I have run into is that the power save feature turns off the scale while I am still adding chemicals to the weight dish. When you turn the scale back on, it zeros itself out. It slows me down alot. Other than that, it has worked fine so far. For the price, I'd say it's a good deal.

It's accurate and would be good for a wide variety of uses. It's nice that it takes 2 AAA batteries instead of the expensive flat round ones that die out very quick. For some reason the expensive scales (over $20) always seem to use these batteries.

It's definitly a good scale at $8...if you want something nicer with a stainless steel weigh surface spend $20 or more on a better one. The scale is ALL plastic and made in China, so know that before buying.

The little scale turned on with no problems, but I quickly realized that it was giving results that were very inaccurate. It would measure 10-15% less than a calibrated scale. No problem, I thought, as the instructions said it just needed a quick calibration. The problem, the ONLY way to calibrate it is with a 500g weight. My calibration weight kit does not contain this, and to purchase this weight is 2 to 3 times more than the cost of the scale. Defeats the purpose of an economical, small scale. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt by giving it 2 stars, with the assumption that it may be accurate if it came calibrated. I'm off to buy a different scale now..

First of all, after retrieving the mail, I noticed a small package, I got really excited and though it was my 20mW green laser, but it was actually this scale. It was 100x smaller than i thought it would be! When they say "pocket scale", they mean it! This thing is smaller than my wallet, but a little bit thicker. Gets the job done for me, weighing out chemicals for backyard pyrotechnics and the like.

Pros:

+ 500g capacity, with .1 resolution, aka: 35.7g as an example reading, but also has oz, dwt, and ozt modes.

+ tray that doubles as cover to keep dust out

+ tare/zero and calibration functions

+ small! fits just about anywhere

+ bright backlight and easy to read numbers

+ simple to operate, ready to go right out of the box with included batteries!

+ 2 AAA batteries, not those rare button types!

+ black color and fairly easy to clean

+ made of plastic, nice and light

+ gets the job done!

Cons:

- its very small size might make it hard to weigh bigger containers/items [but im sure you could figure a way around this, something flat, tare/zero function...]

- someone else pointed out the scale auto-powers down after a short delay, which can happen while you mentally calculate how much more you need to add.

- a super slight deviation at times, such as: 45.3g then after several seconds shows 45.4/45.2g and then goes back to 45.3g. [so if you need absolutely precise measurements, you need to go look for a professional scale], this is a non-issue for me, one decimal precision is much better than +/- 2 whole grams...

- it is made of plastic, so dont expect to drop it off a table multiple times and have it be accurate, but the price makes it a no brainer to just buy a new one

All in all, this is an awesome deal! I am very tempted to buy 2 or 3 more if I find some money...HDE was very quick, 3 whole days before the expected delivery time, and received the exact product as advertised. Its the performance you would expect from a product 3-5x the price [yes including shipping].

If you need a very small portable scale that works, look no further!

For a small inexpensive scale this one works great. It is very sensitive and does a great job for a pocket sized scale. Be carefull to make sure you have the weighing tray centered on the weight sensor though, with it's high level of sensitivity it is easy to get a false reading if you do not have the tray in the right position.

for the price you can't beat it. the scale works as it should and would recomend it to anyone looking for a digital acale. i have owned quite a few scales in the past in which i paid in upwards of a $100, this scale is just as could a a fraction of the price.

I purchased this scale so I could weigh small packages/envelopes and print out USPS First Class Mail (FCM) shipping labels with exact weight in ounces. I'm glad to say that this scale has not disappointed me.

If you print out your own USPS FCM labels online then you get free Delivery Confirmation so this scale has already paid for itself at least 3 times over. Before I was going to my local post office and purchasing Delivery Confirmation for .90 cents for each package but now with this little wonder I can weigh my own packages and save cash. If you mail several small packages every week via FCM then the savings really do add up.

Despite it small size (2 1/2" wide x 3 1/2" long) it can weigh large envelopes because the cover also acts as a supporting tray. If you mail 8" x 13" bubble wrap envelopes frequently like I do then this scale will be perfect.

I'm very happy with my purchase and I would highly recommend this item to anyone who is looking for a quality scale at an economical price to determine if their packages qualify for USPS FCM. - Office Electronics - Fast Weigh - Pocket Scale - Kitchen Scale - Digital - Coins'

Under The Counter Cd Player

I have been looking for an inexpensive radio for my work bench for quite a while. What I really wanted was an AM/FM radio that I could mount out of the way and that also supported an input for my MP3 player. I was starting to think that no such item existed until I came across this radio - so I bought it and mounted it under my work bench.

The sound quality is good for a radio in this price range and there is a handy battery backup for whenever the power gets cut momentarily (which is fairly common out there just because I'm always dinking around with stuff). I also love that my MP3 player hooks up so easily, which gives me acces to pretty much all my music when I don't feel like listening to the radio. I kind of doubt I will ever use the CD player.

Unfortunately, I immediately found that the quality of the FM reception was so poor I couldn't stand to listen to it (AM was fine). After a couple of days of playing around with the position of the power cord, I realized that the problem was feedback from the battery charger for my cordless drill that is plugged into the same outlet. Once I realized that, I changed how everything is plugged in and now the FM reception is very good :). It's too bad this doesn't just have an external FM antenna so people don't run into this problem - I docked a star just for this reason.

I'll make one more comment about the more expensive version of this radio, the ICF-CDK70. When I was having all the reception issues, I thought I'd go give that one a try and I realized that this model (ICF-CDK50) is better in pretty much every way as long as you don't care about the CD changer. The ICF-CDK70 is bulkier, it does NOT have a battery backup, it still has the FM antenna in the power cord, it uses the same speakers, and it doesn't have the handy preset buttons for radio stations. In some ways, I can't believe they call it an upgrade! If you are considering one of these, I highly recommend sticking with this model.

Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. Sony Under-Cabinet Kitchen ICF-CDK50 CD/Clock Radio (Silver)

I installed this in my kitchen underneath a cabinet and it looks great. It's only about 4 inches in height or seemingly less, and was easy to install with the paper hole alignment guide provided. You put the paper guide into the cabinet and then you use a drill to make the holes through the bottom of the cabinet. I countersunk the screws into the wood by using a slightly larger drill bit to make small areas for the screw head. I didn't use the provided spacers, and instead just mounted the unit flush against the cabinet, and it looks great!

Now about the unit, the sound is great for our kitchen. I always leave the megabass setting on, without it it does not fill them room as well. I can crank this unit way up and hear it in all the rooms of my house, and it does not sound bad or like the speakers are going to break. So that's great, you can crank this baby!!!

The CD player works great, just like you would expect. Clock is fine. Timer is fine. Also hooked up to my ipod through the audio-in cord provided and that worked great as well.

Five presets buttons (actually 10 FM and 5 AM) make it really easy to switch around. The remote controller is neat, but don't really need to use it as I can reach the unit just as easily. Controller does not reflect off walls or anything like that, so you need a clear line-of-sight to make it work.

Overall, this is a great product and my wife and I love it!

The installation of the ICF-CDK50 is a 20 minute task using the adjustable spacers to compensate for front lip of cabinet, screws provided and template to drill four 3/16" holes. The Aux input is a 10" pigtail stereo audio cable well concealed that can be used on any MP3 type player left in a clip-on hanger or any other device with an audio output jack. The sound, with the built in Bass boost far exceeds typical table top radios with speakers of this size, enhanced by facing down and being reflected by the counter top, sort of a bass reflex effect. In a 12x16 home kitchen, any volume level above 50% is excessively loud. The <-> manual tuning is very slow, be sure to program favorites in the 5 preset's. The timer function is easily used, set to even minutes; it counts down in seconds and sufficiently louder than the radio volume to gain your attention. The remote thankfully is not a credit card type, it is more like a roll of nickels and while IR, it has a full 180 degree range, likely not used in an active place like the kitchen but convenient if kept beside the telephone if more than an arms reach from the K50. In store comparisons with the twice thicker and expensive Sony ICF-CDK70 model proved it to be total overkill unless used in a work environment like a machine shop or sheltered outdoor/patio location. The 4+" thickness of the K70 vs the 2+" of the K50 reduces the typical 16" counter top to cabinet space to 12-", a significant consideration where Canisters or counter top appliances must exist under it. Other brands found at local store's sounded like pocket transistor radios while the K50 is comparable to a quality boom-box of 4~6' speakers. The rear of the case includes dogs to wrap excess power cable if you must power it from a receptacle in the counter backstop. However, from a performance standpoint, it appears that the FM/AM antenna is embedded in the power cord and coiling the excess length reduces signal strength, routing it up though or outside the cabinet to above, ideally if a gap or plate rail exist atop the cabinets routing the cable up and extending to any available power (like in a range hood) greatly enhances performance. The CD player is adequate, easy to use and when installed under a cabinet with a lower lip, easily accessed. The K50 is the optimum choice as a kitchen AM/FM radio, while offering excellent CD and MP3 player compatibility in a kitchen environment. Of note; there are other radios presently on the market that offer AM/FM/TV/Weather. None advertize the fact that the TV is an NTSC tuner that will be obsolete in Feb 2009 when TV moves to digital ATSC or that the weather alerts become terribly obnoxious after the "new' wears off.'

1080p Lcd Hdtv - 120 hz, 120hz

My first HDTV, so I have nothing to compare it to. With that said, I'm really liking the TV so far. Excellent picture with 1080i over-the-air channels as well as 720p videos through AppleTV. No Blu-Ray test yet. Black levels seem pretty good (I've definitely seen worse while browsing at BestBuy) and colors seem good as well. I did some slight adjustment to the picture with the THX Optimizer system on a Pixar DVD..

Negatives: I wish there was an over-the-air channel guide like my Insignia DTV converter has. Also, I wish there was an "enter"/"ok" button near the numerical keypad for changing channels. You have to type the channel number (bottom of remote), then regrip and hit "ok" at the top of the remote - pretty awkward. Both of these issue are admittedly minor.

Also, I've read many negative comments on the speakers on 2010 and older Panasonic TVs. I think they are reasonable quality for standard built-in speakers.

Something else to add is that this TV was originally listed by both Best Buy and Amazon as having an LED backlight. That info has now been removed from both. The Panasonic website does not list this under their "LED LCD" category (just the standard "LCD" category, implying a CCFL/EEFL backlight), but makes numerous mentions in the product description as having an LED backlight. I originally ordered this when Amazon, Best Buy and Panasonic themselves had it listed as having an LED backlight, so I assumed that's what I was getting.

The LED info never seemed right to me as this TV has nearly the same thickness, contrast ratio and power consumption as the 2010 model Panasonic TVs which ARE listed as having an EEFL (CCFL) backlight. After I got the TV, I looked through the ventilation slots on the back and can see a sticker with a high-voltage warning on it that says "Fluorescent Lamp in Color LCD contain Mercury..." I have real doubts that this TV has an LED backlight.

Overall I'll give it 5 stars. Bottom line is that it has a great picture for a $500-ish TV. Panasonic VIERA TC-L37U3 37-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

This is the second Panasonic Viera TV we have bought, and both are excellent in both picture quality and value. The HD picture rivals that of our 58" plasma in detail, and there is no artifacting with fast movements. We find the menu to be very "user friendly" and set-up was fast and easy. The only thing that could be improved is the built-in speakers. If you are using the TV in a large room, or a room with extraneous noises, you will want to run the sound through a sound system. The on-board speakers just don't put out a lot of volume. We have this TV set up in a small room, and the sound volume is no problem.

This is a lot of HD TV for the money, and I highly recommend this product.

Bought this TV as we finally upgraded to digital cable with HD channels. We had good experience with Panasonic in the past, and this TV has been great so far. The picture is absolutely fantastic with the HDMI connection to our HD DVR. Added a Panasonic blue ray player to the set up, and there is a 3rd HDMI input on the side for our laptop or anything else. Optical digital audio out really finishes off the set up. Great TV, and it fits in the 36" opening in our entertainment center.

Price was exceptional on a limited available TV. Must be selling a lot of them, due to limited availability... Lucky I got one, and at an exceptional price. Arrived in 2 business days. Fast shipping!!!

I bought this LCD TV from Amazon and found out the screen brightness is much darker compare to other brand like Sony and Samsung.

Even I change the display setting to Vivid or change to brightness to 100. It still look kind of dark. I should have check the TV out before purchase it online. I would not recommend buying this TV.

Purchased this Panasonic TV to fit in our solid cherry-wood entertainment center and it fits perfectly. We are edtremely pleased with the picture, sound, and overall quality of this HDTV. Amazon's pricing was great. Would highly recommend this item.

TV arrived in one piece, but missing the remote control!

Like E365 I purchased this after having determined that it was LED backlit, and indeed the Panasonic pages describing it have changed in the meantime. One star down.

Regarding the missing remote, Amazon's page instructs to try to resolve the matter with the manufacturer first. 20 minutes on hold until I got a human who inexplicably immediately hung up on me. Another 20 minutes on hold and I got someone again. Gave all requested information, was given a case number and a fax number to send information to (supposedly) get a remote. Fax number? What a hassle, by design no doubt. The only small saving grace was that the customer support line has Saturday and Sunday hours.

If I don't get the remote within 30 days of ordering I guess it has to go back.

To be continued...

Update: nearly two weeks after having faxed all the required information per instructions there's still no remote and no contact by Panasonic. A little irony here is that the printing on the front of the box the TV comes in extols the wonderful customer service as part of the "Viera experience." I guess it's time to go through Amazon's normal return service. Second star down. - 120hz - 1080p - 1080p Lcd Hdtv - 120 Hz'

Digital Camera Case - digital camera case, camera accessories

I have a closet full of camera cases and bags, but all of them are either too small or larger than I needed for my Panasonic DMC-FZ35 Super-Zoom. After checking out all the available cases at my local chain electronics store, the Case Logic DCB-304 is about as close to perfect as I could find. The camera fits well, with room to spare. It has storage for extra batteries, memory cards, or any small accessories. It's lightweight, well padded, and offers moderate protection. A nice case for 'Super-Zooms', that is priced right. Case Logic DCB-304 High/Fixed Zoom Camera Case (Black)

If youre reading this you should be clicking BUY!! It ia a Great Bag with all the Right sized pockets and Hidden storage compartments for Mem Cards and Accesories It was the perfect Buy For My Powershot Sx30 IS, it fit like a glove andhad space for more.

I bought two camera bags to see which would work best for my Panasonic Lumix FZ35. This bag is more compact of the two and has fewer compartments than the wider Case Logic PSL-46 bag I purchased. This model only has one zipper along the top opening to the main compartment. Two zippers would have allowed for easier, quick access to the camera (for pull-and-grab).

This camera bag would be great if I wanted to travel very light and only bring the camera without the accessories (spare battery charger, hood, etc.) I do like the side zip pockets better on this bag - holds small items more securely - and the strap webbing is better quality with this model bag over the other one I got.

I've written the review for the larger Case Logic PSL-46 on Amazon, so I won't repeat the details here.

Bought this bag on Amazon, but was actually sold by [...]. The bag arrived way before the scheduled delivery date thru Fedex. I was able to fit my Panasonic Fz 35 camera and every accessories(battery, lens hood, hood adaptor, battery charger, len cap, USB cable) that comes with camera into the bag and they fit in just right, the only thing that doesn't fit in was the AV cable and seriously you don't need that in the bag

I purchased the Case Logic DCB-304 High/Fixed Zoom Camera Case together with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ40 digital camera based on Amazon's suggestion in the "Frequently Purchased Together" section the web page. The product met my expectations and I am satisfied with it. In my opinion it is well constructed and has adequate padding to protect the camera from the knocks that sometimes accompany travel.

I carry my camera in the case with the lens hood either in storage mode (i.e., reversed on the lens)or fastened to the lens in normal mode. You need to know that the camera just fits in the case when the lens hood is attached in the normal position. If you plan to carry the camera with a telephoto extension and adaptor attached together with the lens hood I don't think it will fit the case (I don't have these accessories so I am not absolutely sure about this).

There are two side pockets in which I store the av, usb cables, battery charger and spare battery. There is a zippered pocket in the inside of the top of the case where I carry my spare memory cards.

I found this to be a very handy compact case that just fits the camera plus essential accessories and is convenient to carry and great for traveling especially where space is at a premium. If you have need to carry more accessories or equipment then a larger case or camera bag will be necessary.

I wanted a sturdy little bag just large enough to carry my Nikon Coolpix P100 and a couple of extra batteries and memory cards and that is exactly what I got. It is padded enough that I feel my camera is safe in it. It has room in the main compartment for my camera with the carrying strapped attached. I put my batteries and memory cards in the two little side compartments and I am set to go. I like that all the compartments have a zipper so nothing falls out and I only have to open one compartment at a time. I am very happy with this little bag.

I researched for quite some time on what case to get for my new P100. I definitely hit the nail square on the head.

Holds the camera snug and has enough clearance between the top for the OEM camera strap, and probably a good after market strap. The padding feels like a good 1/4" neoprene foam, sewn inside a good heavy tight nylon weave outside and a silky smooth nylon ripstop style inner lining. I use the zippered pocket inside the camera compartment lid-flap to hold my many SD cards. The zippered outside pockets easily hold my 2 extra batteries and wall/car charger and cords. smooth zippers too. The case shoulder strap adjusts long enough to carry diagonally across torso. I'm 5'11" and not skinny. It actually will hang low on the waistline when adjusted all the way out. There is a wide flush belt loop on the back too. I bought the a Zipshot tripod from Tamrac that straps perfect to the shoulder strap loops on the back using the tripods attached bungee straps. This is a great lite and compact rig. I am very happy with this camera bag. I plan on taking this rig everywhere I go. I don't want to miss that perfect shot again. I've heard that one before. ;-) - Digital Camera Case - Case Logic - Camera Case - Camera Accessories'
