Oil Pastel - art supplies, oil pastel

I've actually only used these a couple times, but when I have used them they're fun. A nice range of vivid, blendable colors. Obviously the blunt ends aren't going to be great for fine details, but you can get some fun textured effects by pushing hard with some sweeping strokes. You blow through them really fast that way, but at six bucks a set why not? (Try not to overdo it, though; they're soft, break easy. And maybe check at local stores to avoid shipping. = ) ) These are also an affordable alternative for artists who like colored pencils but can't afford the steep prices. All around if you want to relax with some fun color, this is a great way to go. Pentel Arts Oil Pastels, 50 Color Set (PHN-50)

I really like that there is a large variety of colors to chose from. Bought them for the kids, I'm pretty sure they're going to have lots of fun with them. When I received the order some of the paints were sticking out wich is normal during delivery, thankfully none of them got broken. Great purchase!

These Oil Pastel Sticks are about 3 inches in length and come in about every immaginable color. They sketch beatifully onto regular hard back sketch paper and allow for very nice control. If you are a modern or impressionist style sketcher then you will appreciate what you can do with these. They are fun and of a high quality for their inexpensive price.

I cannot comment on the quality of this set I bought it for my soon to be 17 yr. old Granddaugher who is planning on going to art school she has a natural talent with painting as well as sketching started at a very young age the set does look like it is good quality but who am I to say since I don't know too much about things such as this I am sure she will enjoy them....

I bought this pastel, shipping arrived quickly. I painted it came out very beautiful. Pastels have good quality. Cheaper and it's very easy to use. If I run out probably I will buy this product soon. - Pentel - Art Supplies - Oil Pastel'

Bellydancing - belly dance hip scarf, bellydancing

I bought this and one other scarf for my daughter and her friend who are doing Zumba. They loved it! And for the money you cant beat it. It has just enough coins to make a nice sound and the colors go with anything they want to wear for Zumba. Bellyqueen™ Belly Dance Hip Scarf With Colorful Paillettes, Gold Coins Lively Style

The hip scarf is just as colorful in person as it is in the picture! I really like it! The only thing that I don't like is the fabric the scarf is made of, it seems a bit cheap, but the colorful paillettes and coins make up for it because you don't see the scarf fabric when wearing it! I've gotten lots of compliments on it in my belly dance class :)

This is a very nice and beautiful product for sure. I went to Zumba last night. My scarf didn't make as much noise as the friend of mine next to me. It was because their were only 80 coins on Mine, compared to the 180 on hers. The other things are just circular colorful pieces that flutter. I looked at other skirts and their are 180 or so coins.

Just thought you would want to know, if you like it to make noise.

Other than that its beautiful.

Hope this is helpful in your choice.

Happy Dancing.

Paula

Love the hip scarf! I got it for my Zumba class as all the gals were wearing them! This one is unique and different than any of the others and I love it! I usually can find just about anything on Amazon.com!!

I bought this hip scarf last year when I first started belly dancing. I always get compliments from even the seasoned dancers. It is so colorful, and the sequins and coins really fly when I shimmy. I have yet to lose any piece. - Belly Dance Hip Scarf - Bellydancing - Women'

School Supplies - planner, daily planner

This is the perfect day planner for my needs as a nursing student. Our schedule is very hectic & I'd never get everything done on time without a day planner. This one gives you the entire monthly calendar followed by individual days. Great if you are OCD like me =) 2011-2012 Daily Fashion Day Planner Organizer Agenda (August 2011 Through July 2012)- Hearts

This is the perfect planner for me. It is a nice size to carry in a purse or backpack. The pattern is pretty and I like the way the monthly calendar lays out "centerfold" style to reveal the entire month at a glance. I would recommend this item.

I wanted to save some money and instead of buying my University's expensive planner from the bookstore I chose to purchase this one. This planner is great. I love the quality of the paper, the spiral binding that I can keep a pen inside, the design of the cover, and also the layout of the planner. It has just enough space for each day that I am not trying to squeeze things in. Get it!!

I LOVE this planner. It gives tons of space (last semester I tried squeezing all my to-do's into one inch boxes on a calendar. Ha!) and I don't know what the negative reviewer was talking about, it goes from January-December 2011 so it's not semester specific. I can't even say how much I like it. And my little sister flipped when she saw it so I'm getting one for her birthday. It's super cute, super convenient, has tons of space and a practical, utilitarian layout and assets (the month at a glance is great for homework/project planning, list of holdidays, class schedule spot--though I wish there was two, it only has one so next semester's a bust, and space for names and numbers and notes). Great buy, I'm so glad I got it. Seriously, I've been more organized and gotten more things done and have been less frazzled. :) The hardest part about this was deciding which color/pattern to get.

The planner is colorful and durable. I like the layout a lot.

What I didn't realize was that each month there are "fashion tips" printed on the top of the page. Example: "Celebrities are great resources for learning how to incorporate this season's hottest styles into your looks." I thought "fashion" was in the description because of the print on the cover. Also, there are "inspirational quotes" which I find kind of vapid and vague. Example: "Positive things happen to positive people." If you like these things, this is a great choice for you, but I was unaware before buying.

My one legitimate complaint is that they slip advertising right into your weekly pages. On July 13th the words "Happy Birthday Stacey!" and a website are printed. The website is supposed to give you events around your college town. On December 1st is printed "Plan-it Planners are available in calendar year format and make great gifts! Visit plan-itplanners.com to order some as holiday gifts for your friends and family." I am unhappy they thought it appropriate to place a product advertisement right on my Thursday caledar, even after their company name is printed on every page.

i found just what i wanted in this item. the description is exactly what the product is. i only wish that the cover and the back were a little more durable as i just tend to throw it in my bag and the covers are going to get worn out. - Agenda - Planner - Organizer - Daily Planner'

Sports Collectibles - yankees sunglasses, phiten

This is a very inexpensive item but does not show it in the quality of the product. I bought this item because of the team emblem on the side. I was nervous to purchase sunglasses on-line due to not being able to try them on to see if they fit my face. But, these are very comfortable sunglasses and I am very happy with my purchase. I would suggest buying this item, especially since they have the NEW YORK YANKEES on the side. :-) MLB New York Yankees Sunglasses - Magnetic Therapy - Phiten - Sports Collectibles - Yankees Sunglasses'

Cordless Tools - cordless tools, drill

I was looking for something cheap as my first drill. From checking many different stores and drills, this was the best choice for the money. I used this successfully for installing 3 over-the-range microwaves. I bought large Irwin drill bits to cut big holes through drywall and cabinetry, and this drill performed fine. This also

saves you a ton of time having to use a screwdriver to assemble something.

FYI: The 20 accessories that come with this drill are drill bits and screwdriver bits. They are of good quality and that alone saves you some $10-$15 bucks from having to buy it separately with another drill.

This is not a hammer drill so you will not be able to drill through concrete or other strong material. Some places of drywall was difficult for me to drill through, but with maximum drill power and forward-force I was able to make it through.

The battery lasts well for me, one thing that is good is to keep charging it in between working, or while you are taking 30mins for a lunch break. It held its charge for over 2 weeks when I had it in storage between uses.

One suggestion is to have some kind of indicator to let you know when it's fully charged. There are no lights whatsoever to tell you it's charging or it's got a charge. But if you do it like me and plug it in the night before working then you're fine.

Again, for $50 bucks shipped you can't beat this drill. If you're looking for the best then go for DeWalt, but if you need something around the house, or maybe helping out a neighbor install whatever, this is an excellent choice. Black & Decker CDC180ASB 18-volt Compact Drill with 20 Accessories

I picked this up for $40 on sale in a local store. It's adequate for most tasks, but no better.

The battery can only be charged when it's plugged into the drill, so you can't alternate between two to keep working. It doesn't have a variable speed setting, so controlling the speed when driving screws is hard. The battery capacity seems small, plus there's no charge level indicator on the device or charger, so you don't know when it's fully recharged. Finally, the RPM is very low compared to equivalents--getting through steel is going to take you a while.

If you can get it on sale for a reasonable price, and don't want to do too many adventurous things with a power drill, consider giving it a look.

It may be 18v, but it has nowhere near the power of my old Black & Decker 18v drill. The a/c adapter is also a fraction of the size, which makes me wonder. Build quality seems on par.

After shopping to replace my old one, I came home with a sears craftsman C3 19.2v ($90) and this B&D 18v model. The difference is like night and day. While at Sears, I also tried the Dewalt 18v drills which even more powerful than the craftsman. You can feel the torque on these yanking the unit in your hand; you cannot feel anything on this B&D.

Obviously, the voltage rating is not a good indicator of performance. Frustratingly, price is turning out to be a better indicator.

I asked for this particular drill (battery powered) for Christmas - and got it :-) I have several Black & Decker items and am pleased with all of them. Jig saw, two electric drills, weed whacker, tiller, small work bench, wall paper steamer (yes, B&D doesn't make them anymore, but I loved my original one that I had for 20 years, which finally gave out after many hours of use not only by me, but also by some of my office colleagues. But I found a "brand-new/old" one, never used, on e-bay.) Some of those tools might not be suitable for a professional handyman, but for a do-it-yourself woman (or some of the more clumsy, helpless do-it-yourself men!), they are wonderful, reliable products.

For an 81 year-old woman, this drill is so heavy as to be almost unusable. In fact, it may be unusable. I've had it out twice and couldn't deal with the weight. I'm keeping it because there are younger people in the house who can use it and, besides, although Amazon makes it easy, I hate messing with sending stuff back. As a drill for someone stronger it will be fine..

As a older, single woman, I wanted something I could easily use, but yet it would be good enough to put together furniture, mount shelving, etc. This drill is a thrill! I am so happy with it that I have told all my friends about it. Now I'm looking for things to use it on!

I needed a drill to put up some plywood to winterize a breezeway. This model worked fine to drill holes and set the deck screws, but in the spring when I tried to remove the screws, there just was not enough power to remove the screws. I had to go back to a power drill and an extension cord.

Save you money and buy a real drill. I tried to save a few bucks and am very sorry. Now I will have to pay more for a drill that holds its charge and has some power. Don't go by the volt comparison.

This does plenty of work around the house. The 18V motor has all the torque I need for most jobs (note from an EE: higher voltage makes it easier to get more motor power from a battery of given capacity). Having two batteries makes life a lot easier - one working while the other charges. And, as an added convenience, the batteries are interchangeable with batteries in other B&D tool suite, like their lawn trimmer. I haven't needed the extra batteries and charger yet, but I'm sure some job will come up where they're more than handy.

My only complaint, a minor one, is that the charger doesn't let you know when the battery is full. I know the extra indicator would have added a little to the cost, but would have been a big improvement.

Garmin Forerunner - training, running

I got a 305 a few years ago, and needed a replacement when the display started dying.

The 305 had obvious usability issues, mostly because it was very clearly not designed by athletes. Unfortunately, the 310xt is just as bad in that respect, and the unit didn't last more than a few months. I own the watch, the heart rate strap, and the foot pod.

My old $50 heart rate monitor did a much better job at letting me know whether my pulse was in range or not than my 310xt (or 305).

My wish list is pretty simple...

When running, I want to know, without looking at the device:

- Whether my heart rate is too high, too low, or in range. Simple, easily identifiable chirps for too high and too low would do.

- Whether my pace is too high, too low, or in range

- Whether my cadence is too high, too low, or in range

- I don't want to be bothered by transients; the watch knows I just turned a corner, so give me a few seconds to reach my goal pace before beeping.

- If my heart rate is high, and my pace low, don't bother me about that unless my cadence is low, too.

- Use GPS data to control my pace and cadence; I'm not going to keep a steady pace on a trail that has steep gradients. It's OK if I have to hit a button when I get to the peak or start a climb. But don't make me dive into a menu to lower my pace goal.

- I don't want to be told my heart rate is too low when I just started running; clearly it's already rising rapidly, so there is no need for the watch to bother me about it.

- When I'm having a bad day, let me lower my goals without having to stop to do it. A long press on the down button would do.

In my experience, the 305 is a better product than the 310. It uses a wired connection instead of an ANT stick, so it's much faster. The software is better for runners, especially the quick workout. Add that it's cheaper, and there really is no reason to get the 310 if you're not planning to swim. Hercules Hook Hangers - hercules hooks, picture hangers

Love these hooks - I use them whenever I can't find a stud. I like to cover the wall with pictures and decorations. However, I don't believe the BS about how much weight they'll handle (neither does Consumer Reports) - but I've been able to hang everything I wanted to. I've never tried to hang anything over about 10-20 pounds.

Been using them for years (only on sheet rock) - the first pack I bought had a laser level included - it still works great for lining up multiple pictures. The hooks are easy to relocate or remove and you can fill in the little hole with putty or toothpaste (if you are a cheapskate like me)! A dab of matching paint covers it up like it was never there!

BTW - This is the best price I've found so far. Buy them in a store and pay three or four times as much (like I did the first time). Hang-It-Up Super Hooks (20 Hooks)

pros:

much easier and cheaper than using drywall anchors. they leave a smaller hole when removed. take up less storage space.

cons:

not adjustable without permanently altering. some pictures stick out too far. - Picture Hangers - Hercules Hooks - Hooks'

Canon Eos Rebel T1i - digital slr, digital camera

I've had the T1i for about almost week now and after some extensive use, here are my thoughts:

1. 15.1 megapixel sensor. Yes, the high megapixel count is impressive, but keep in mind that, as you approach higher resolutions, you need to ensure the lens on the SLR can resolve that much detail. Sadly, the included 18-55mm IS lens is functional, but the high resolution really shows the so-so quality of the lens. Even if taken at the proper focus, pictures can appear soft with this kit lens. Shots I have taken with Canon EF-S 17-85mm and EF 70-200mm L lenses are crisp. I don't have any gripes on image quality. There are some issues with noise on the higher ISOs that don't seem to show up on the Nikon digitals, but overall, the quality is amazing for the price. Skin tones, textures, colors are reproduced very accurately.

2. Digic 4. The Digic 4 processor appears to process/save the 15 megapixel images in the same time (if not faster) than the Digic III processor on the XSi (even in RAW+Jpg mode). I have also noticed that at higher ISOs, the sensor and the Digic 4 produce images with less overall noise compared with its predecessors.

3. LCD. The 920,000 pixel LCD screen is large (3"), crisp, vibrant and fully visible even in bright sunlight. In comparison, the Canon XSi SLR (which the T1i replaces), also has a 3" LCD, but with 230,000 pixels. The viewing angle is great as well and the LCD can easily be seen nearly 180 degrees around.

4. ISO 12800. Canon and Amazon are correctly identifying that the T1i maxes out at ISO 3200. Some less reputable dealers are listing an ISO 12800, which you should disregard. The ISO 6400 and 12800 settings are expanded ISO settings. The pictures taken on these two settings are ISO 3200 images pushed to ISO 6400 or 12800 by the Digic 4 chip before saving to the memory card. These pictures are extremely grainy and contain a lot of noise to the point of only being usable as for snapshots or adding an artistic effect to certain compositions.

5. Penta-mirror. That Canon is still using one in the T1i is disappointing. The penta-mirror viewfinder image is functional, but still noticeably darker than that of the penta-prism viewfinder in the Nikon D90 (which is the T1i's main competitor). I really would have preferred if Canon had kept the XSi's 12.2 megapixel sensor, forgone 1080p video altogether, and maybe upped the cost of the camera slightly to cover the production cost of using a penta-prism in the T1i. Honestly, unless you are massively cropping your images, or creating large photos, the difference between 12.2 and 15.1 megapixels really is negligible.

6. Size. This is the same body as the XSi, and therefore a bit on the smaller side compared to other digital SLRs. I have small hands, so the T1i is comfortable for me. If you have big hands, I can see this being a very difficult camera to use over an extended period of time. If you haven't handled a Canon XT, XTi or XSi, I would suggest you go to a store and hold the T1i yourself before purchasing it online. (I will upload a picture of the T1i in my hands to the user gallery for a size reference.)

7. HD Video. Yes, the Canon marketing department made a horrible marketing decision and pushed the T1i onto shelves limiting the 1080p recording to 20fps (frames per second). Recognize this as a marketing gimmick that allows them put a 1080p sticker on the camera box. The 1080p @ 20fps is fine most times, but seems a choppy if you have a lot of action in the frame or are panning quickly. The T1i's 720p video is recorded at 30fps and is clean, smooth, and sufficient for all but the most discerning consumers. One major criticism though is that the sound is recorded in mono, AND there is NO input for an external microphone.

A lot of pre-production reviews of the T1i criticize its inability to automatically autofocus while recording. I wouldn't put much weight in this criticism, mostly because neither of the other two SLR cameras with HD recording capabilities (Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D90) can automatically autofocus while recording either. What you can do with the T1i is pan/zoom the lens and then press the AE lock (*) button to make the camera autofocus on the new subject (all while recording). A problem with using the AE lock button to have the camera autofocus is that the microphone for the camera is on the front upper left of the body near the lens mount. Therefore, the lens motor noise is picked up just as much as ambient sounds. Even with my quietest Canon USM (ultasonic motor) lenses, this lens motor sound is pretty loud in video playback. Although, remember, you can always manually turn the focusing ring on the lens to get your subject back into focus. It's not easy, but after a little practice, it's not all too hard, either.

Ultimately, you shouldn't let the HD recording limitations sway you one way or the other. This is an SLR camera -- not a video camera. The HD video is a great feature, but if you're looking for something primarily to take video, look elsewhere. There are much better, cheaper VIDEO cameras out there which can record true 1080p.

8. Record button. For some reason, the record video button is next to the LCD screen (the same button used for direct printing). The first few times you take video, you'll intuitively find yourself using the shutter release button used to take pictures. The reason for this switch is that you can take a still picture while recording video, although, doing so will interrupt the recording.

9. Battery life. My first fully charged battery only lasted about 250 shots (no flash), but all charges since have given me in the range of 500-700 shots per charge. I'm guessing the first charge had such a short life because I spent quite a bit of time learning the camera, its menus, and settings.

10. Live View. I honestly can't review this as I haven't used it too much yet -- I prefer using the viewfinder. One feature I can say is nice is that, on the LCD, you can digitally zoom in (up to 10x) on a section of your shot to ensure it is properly focused. This, and the fine focusing, can really help if you're into macro-photography.

11. HDMI cable. The T1i has an HDMI Type C output on the body to allow you to directly display pictures and video on an HDTV. A minor criticism is that the HDMI Type C cable is not included in the box. You have to buy it separately. It would have been nice if it were included, as it's not an expensive cable.

Conclusion. The T1i is a bit on the light end, yet the construction still feels solid. For the camera's price point, you'd be hard pressed to find any digital SLR out there which gives you all the capabilities and growth range of the Canon T1i. The camera is intuitive enough for those new to photography to pick and learn easily, yet configurable enough for advanced amateurs. If video is not a big deal for you, then get the Canon XSi. There is very little the T1i has (other than ISO 3200 and a sharper screen) that the XSi doesn't. Plus, with the release of the T1i, you can probably pick up a used XSi for a great price on eBay. My wife recently gave birth, and I'm not looking to record endless (never to be watched) tapes of video footage of our son, but I do want several minute clips of him as he grows through the years. I've always been more inclined towards photography, so this camera gives me a very versatile digital SLR that I need with the wonderful capability of recording HD video that I want.
