Impact Drivers - 18 volt, impact drivers

Not long ago a friend gave me an extra DeWalt 18 volt drill he'd come into. I'd been using a 12 volt Makita for over a decade, and I was impressed with how much more torque and battery life the DeWalt had. The same friend also had a DeWalt impact driver from the same series, and again, I was impressed how well this handled mechanical tasks usually relegated to a pneumatic impact driver. But even more impressive was how well the DeWalt worked for driving screws.

A few years ago, the major cordless tool makers started to come out with impact drivers which they marketed not to mechanics, but to carpenters. While today's 18volt cordless drills do a pretty good job of driving screws, they still start to bog down when driving really long screws into hard or resinous wood. The slow, stall, and eventually overheat. But impact drivers don't do this. They work on a different principle, using a motor-driven hammer to repeatedly strike an anvil that drives the output shaft. As the load increases, they switch from spinning to a rapid-fire staccato impact mode, in which every impact turns the screw a bit farther, while the motor continues to spin and bring in cooling air.

I was very pleased to discover that Amazon had a DeWalt impact driver available in a batteryless and caseless package (for those of us who already have a charger and several batteries) for about $125. I purchased mine for a mix of yard projects- this is a great tool for driving the big screws used to tie landscape timbers together- home projects, and motorcycle/scooter maintenance. And amazingly, it's even lighter and more compact than the DEWALT DC759KA Heavy-Duty 18-Volt Ni-Cad 1/2-Inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit. I'm giving away my Makita 12v drill/driver to a nephew who likes tools and gadgets, and switching 100% to the DeWalt system. Bare-Tool DEWALT DC825B 1/4-Inch 18-Volt Cordless Impact Driver (Tool Only, No Battery)

I bought this last year after my Black and Decker 18v drill died it's 3rd death. I got it in a 4 tool combo kit on sale at Lowes. I build haunted houses for the Halloween season so most of what I do construction wise is with rough and sometimes very old and hard woods. The woods are also made super tough (like rock) from a chemical that must be sprayed on them to make them fire retardant. I found that before, even with an 18v drill that screws would shear off before going into the boards which made it difficult to make secure connections in the wood. It is hard to make something look old and spooky and still have it be safe so having good, solid tools is a must. Right after I charged the battery I tried this tool out. Wow!! It drove a 3 inch deck screw into an old hardened 2x4 in the blink of an eye!! I had never used a tool like that. It quickly became a favorite of mine on the jobsite. I used it hard and it never once let me down. I bought it toward the end of the build so I only got to use it on a few hundred screws but never a disappointment. I'm looking forward to using on this season's build as well as in my volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity. I would highly recommend this tool to anyone who builds.

I bought this tool to add to my dewalt collection. I have had the 18volt dill for years and did'nt think that I need an impact driver. I was wrong. I am using the impact more that the drill for driving large screws. It make the jobs much easier. The driver was shipped by a third party and I received it in just a few days. I was very impressed. This is an excellent tool if you do lots of repair work with 2 by lumber.

I have long been a loyal DeWalt costumer, especially when in comes to cordless tools like the 18v drill I purchased 6 years ago. That drill quickly became my favorite tool and has seen constant use since. In fact I was so happy with the drill that I did not see any reason to buy an impact driver, until a couple of projects I was working on required me to drive a large number of constuction screws and lag bolts. My drill was able to drive them but not as easily or quickly as I would have liked, so I decided it was time to give the impact driver a try and my only regret it that I did not buy one sooner. This driver is by far the best power tool I have ever owned. It is absolutely necessary for driving lag screws or anything comparable but also preforms so much better in less demanding tasks like running deck screws. I have discovered that it is also quite handy for boring large holes even though that is not the intent behind the tool. If you put an Irwin Speedbore bit in this thing it will chew through 4 by lumber in no time. Using the driver for boring has saved my wrist on a number of occasions as those Speedbore bits require quite abit of torque to run and if the bit binds up while using a regular drill all that torque gets transferred to your wrist. Now that I have a set of Irwin Speedbore and Spade bits plus a decent hex drill bit set my drill is relegated to drilling metal and the occasional pilot hole.

This driver is also much better at removing rusty and stripped screws than my drill, just another unexpected bonus.

Without exception this is the one tool that goes with me to every job. - 18 Volt - Cordless - Dewalt - Impact Drivers'

Stinger Stapler

Absolute garbage. It malfunctions about every other shot. The caps advance the wrong amount (either too much or too little) and that causes it to not cut the connection between caps. As you withdraw the tool, you unwind a bunch of caps. Now you have to cut the connection with diag cutters or utility knife. And you have to get the caps rewound back into the reel. About 3 minutes wasted every other shot.

And that's after practicing for a while and getting good at slapping it at a certain angle.

Good concept, horrible execution. CH38A'

Tv Screen Cover - tv guard, tv screen cover

This tv protector fits on our new 46 inch Samsung LED LCD very well. You cannot say it is installed on the TV. After spending a good amount of money on our new HDTV my husband thought that the TV screen protector would ruin the TV looks but that is not true at all.

My son tested the protector the first day we had it on. It is also great for protection from Wii players - my older sun being one of those. Installations is easy - the only thing is keeping it away from dust while unpacking. The protector just sticks on the TV - we had it for about four months and I only took it off once to see how that works - basically it clicks on and off to the fasteners that remain on the TV. There wasn't much dust on the TV screen or the protector.

It seems impossible to me that someone will break the screen of our 46 inch TV with the protector on.

Several of my friends with children also got this TV screen protector and it seems to be working great for all of them as well. Anti-Glare TV-ProtectorTM Stylish TV Screen Protector for 46 inch LCD, LED or Plasma TV - Tv Screen Cover - Tv Guard'

Ipod Touch Screen Protector - ipod accessories, ipod touch

After reading the various reviews on this item, I was on the fence about applying this to my shiny new iPod Touch (2G) 32GB. After all, it's an expensive gadget! Needless to say, I am very pleased with the outcome.

I ordered my 3-pack through Bargaincell and they do indeed cover the entire face with an upside-down "U" cut out in the bottom to make space for the tactile "Home" button. They are also crystal clear and do not impact the visual appearance of the LCD screen nor do they impact touchscreen sensitivity in any way (that I could notice, and I'm quite nit-picky).

I methodically install screen protectors on all of my gadgets the day I get them. So here are some tips I've come up with while applying this particular protector:

1. Try to do this under very bright lighting (such as under a desk lamp) so it's easier to see any stray dust.

2. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling. Blow on your hands and rub them briskly together to remove any towel lint.

3. Use the included cleaning cloth with a drop or two of water to remove all existing residue and finger smudges.

4. One you remove the thin backing to expose the light adhesive, only handle the protector by the long edges. Making the letter "C", you should hold it in your hand as if holding a playing card (palm facing down).

5. Since the protector is very difficult to remove without damaging it, take the included smoothing card (or the edge of the backing you just removed) and place it under one corner because chances are, it WILL take several attempts to align the protector perfectly.

6. If you are correctly holding it at the long edges, the protector will bow downwards. Just before you apply it to the center of the iPod, gently blow across the iPod's screen to remove any dust particles that have landed over the past few seconds.

7. Slowly place the protector on the iPod's screen and allow to slowly flatten from the inside to the outer edges. Do not let go until the last possible moment. Fortunately, this protector is stiff enough to eliminate most (if not all) bubbles along the way.

8. If it is aligned to your satisfaction, gently remove the smoothing card from the corner. If not, use the card to gently peel up the protector and try again.

9. Once aligned, use the smoothing card to smooth out any stray bubbles near the edges.

10. Enjoy your protected iPod! iKross 3-Pack Premium Reusable LCD Screen Protector with Lint Cleaning Cloth for iPod touch (Clear)

I initially got this for my iPod Touch 2g. It does what it says it will do, BUT it attracts fingerprints and smears like crazy! I thought this was simply the price to be paid for protecting the screen.

However I was in a coffee shop the other day and this guy saw me cleaning my screen. He asked me if I had a screen protector on it and I said yes.

He pulled out his iPhone and handed it to me and said "Go ahead swipe, touch and tap it."

I did and much to my surprise THERE WERE NO SMUDGES OR FINGERPRINTS! I noticed that when tilted a little it had a slight non reflective satin sheen to it rather than a glossy reflection like mine did.

I asked him where he got his screen protector and he told me at the online apple store.

I did some research and found out the company that makes it is called "Power Support".

You don't have to get it at the apple store tho, you can get it here at Amazon or other places. Just search for "Power Support Anti Glare Film".

It IS around $15.00 for a set of 2 screen protectors.

HOWEVER, for the ability to have a smudge and fingerprint free iPod Touch and to reduce the glare on the screen, I was more than willing to pay the price.

Hope this helps!

These are great and the price is right for a 3 pack of them. It was not too challenging putting this protector on.(Hint, only hold the sides of the protector when applying it to the iPod) This protector is crystal clear, I cant even tell that its on. The protector covers the entire front of the ipod touch (except the home button) though, it seems like its a slightly smaller, Im, not sure because i could of placed it on a little crooked. Which you cant even tell if you use a sleeve or iClear cover as I do.

I bought this to go with the Griffin 8167-ITCLR iClear Hard-Shell Case for iPod touch and having them both together makes me feel more comfortable about my ipod touch being well protected.

I'm !00% Satisfied with this product.

If the shipper is Eforcity you will not receive the product in photo. You will receive a partial screen protector sized to cover the "touch" portion of the screen. It's not IKross but from company called Insten. When I asked for the full screen as I had ordered they kindly and quickly sent a replacement but unfortunately it was the same wrong product.

If partial screen is what you need, then the product is fine.

As mentioned in a previous review, the photographs for this product clearly show an iTouch 2G, with the hole for the home button rather than an inverted "U" that would work with the 1G.

Nowhere in the product description does it state the product is for 1G only. Yet the package clearly states "Suitable for Touch 1G [sic] Full front."

I wrote BargainCell requesting an exchange. They told me to give them a CC number for reshipping charges. Reshippping charges?!? The cost of the product was 1 cent and the shipping was $2.98 (while another vendor had the price as $2.99 with free shipping). I told them I would not pay any more shipping for their inaccurate description. They responded that their description clearly said the protectors were for the iTouch and not for the 2G. What, in heavens name, do they think the 2G is?

This 1G product might work, but it is not designed specifically for the iTouch 2G - their deceptive pictures of the 2G notwithstanding. It is unethical and dishonest to use a bait-and-switch with your customers and then refuse to make it right. Thank goodness for Amazon's "A-to-Z Guarantee" for third-party sellers.

If you're thinking of buying anything from BargainCell - Caveat emptor!

UPDATE - 2 June 2009: After posting this negative review and filing an A-to-Z claim with Amazon, I got an email from BargainCell promising to send the correct product at no additional charge. So, I canceled the claim and waited ... and waited. After almost four weeks - and nothing from BargainCell - I realized they were not going to make it right, so I re-instated my claim. When I did so, I copied BargainCell on the email to Amazon, to which they said ... nothing. Today the refund came through and still no word from them.

I've gotten stuff from BargainCell before and it has been pretty good. This was a real surprise for me ... but educational. I don't care if they're selling iMacs for a nickel, I'm not buying. And neither should you. - Itouch Accessories - Screen Protection - Ipod Touch - Ipod Accessories'

Rotozip

I bought this to use for removing underlayment below toe-kicks (see my review of the Rotozip RZ20-4500 for full description). It cut through 1/2" plywood underlayment with linoleum over it with no effort at all, as expected. The pleasant surprize was that it also went through a couple of hidden nails without trashing the blade. This blade uses a bonded grit for cutting rather than teeth.

The resulting sawdust is fine. It clouds the air and floats around the work area. This could be expected so I can't downgrade the tool as a result. Keeping the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner close to the cut keeps the sawdust from going everywhere. This helps keep the homeowner happy. Rotozip XW-WD1 Flush Wood Cutting Wheel

I bought the RZ20 and this blade to cut some laminate flooring. The blade does not fit under the stock shield. You must buy an extra shield called the x-shield for it to work. So after buying the blade, I had to buy the x-shield which includes the same blade, lol. I was only cutting 5 feet of flooring, so I wasted $30.

If you have not bought the x-shield, buy it instead of this blade. I got mine at a home improvement store for $10-15 more than the blade itself, which is included for free.

I was tempted to mark Rotozip 3 stars for nickel and diming their customers. There is no reason they cannot make one shield to fit both the metal and wood blades. It is just an attempt to squeeze more cash out of people. Not only that it makes the tool more difficult to use and store.

I decided to go with 4 stars, because other than poor design which forces people to spend more money on accessories, and spend more time swithcing the shields around it does do a good job.

I am putting down 60 cases of Pergo laminate flooring. At first I was taking the base boards off, cleaning them and reattaching them after I put the flooring down, then I saw this wheel for my Roto Zip and decided to give it a try. After a few practice attempts, it proved to be much easier to trim the base boards in place on the wall. Where this little blade really paid for itself was around and under the door jambs ! With the base boards cut in place and the door jambs nicely trimmed, the floow just slide right under in place. A little latex caulking to fill the SMALL gap, some touch up paint and it looks like a pro job !

The only complaint (why it did not get 5 stars) was after a about 10 feet of constant trimming the wheel began to smoke when cutting ? Mind you I am cutting HD type pine base board moulding. Rather than making a continous cut, it became necessary to make short plung type cuts along the board. Not a big deal, just not efficient. The sticking of the blade( and smoking) may be due to a build of of "tar/resin" from the wood ? The claim to cut 100 feet of "laminate flooring" (much harder than "pine" moulding) might be stretching it a bit, but overall the little blade works for me and saves a lot of time and labor for this homeowner.

I BOUGHT THIS TO CUT SOME FLOORING AND IT DID DO A GOOD JOB, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE WORN DOWN KIND OF QUICK, I WAS STILL HAPPY WITH THIS. IT DID CUT DOWN THE TIME AT CHIPPING AWAY ON SOME OF THE FLOORING, SO YOU MIGHT WANT TO ORDER 2 OF THEM , BUT OVERALL IT DID IT'S JOB.

R.FLORES CA

I purchased this for use with my RotoZip RZ20. I replaced the flooring in two rooms and this added an additional height of 1\2" to the exisiting floor. I used it to undercut the trim around the door frames. This cutting wheel has a diamond coating on it's edge so it doesn't look like a regular wood saw blade. I did use it with the RotoZip flush cutting attachment and wore gloves for safety in case of kickback. The blade made clean cuts, I found it best to proceed slowly and let the tool do the work.'

Cordless Drill - drills, lithium-ion

Ive been using this gun for a week now and it has performed better than expected. I use my ridgid cordless tools everyday at work for the last 5 years. If you dont mind a heavy solid tool ridgid is the way to go. Im using my 18v 2.5ah ni-cad batteries and it workes great. I want to buy some 24v batteries now. I drilled threw 15" of solid wood with a 1 1/8 auger bit in low gear and it never slowed down i didnt even have to stop partway to clear out the woodchips. ALWAYS use the second handle while doing high torque tasks I burned out my last drill that way. Only one thing ridgid needs to fix is that the trigger sticks under massive torque while not using extra handle. Ridgids hammerdrill is just as good if not better than others like dewalt. The clutch on a ridgid gun is better than any other ive used. Dewalt has the worst clutch ive ever used. RIDGID 24V/18V Max Select XLi Lithium-Ion Hammer Drill

I purchased this item as a replacement for a lost or stolen identical item. This the most powerful battery powered drill that I have ever owned. The battery life and recharge time is exceptional. Though a little on the heavy side, it has done everything including drilling through 10" concrete. No problems to date.

Okay, I haven't used it that much, but this drill is awesome. It has so much power, the handle is really helpful. The drill is really heavy, especially with the 24V batteries. The Maxselect tools I've used with the 18V have not really worked that great, although I haven't really used this drill with the 18V batteries as I have an 18V drill. The 24V tools really do work best with 14V batteries. The 24V batteries are hard to come by, especially if you want the lifetime service agreement only available if you get it from an authorized seller (ie HD). The brake works well and you can change bits just by turning the chuck sleeve. You could probably turn screws even with the drill stopped (although I've not needed to do so with this drill yet). I can't comment on longevity, but I've read enough reports of premature failure that I'd think twice buying this one to use if my livelihood depended on it. It's really too heavy for many tasks, but when you need a big drill, this drill works great.

The chuck is bad and i know someone else with the same drill and he has the exact same problem.

Bought when the kit first came out 3 years ago or so. Drill had a jacobs chuck (keyless - u just grasp it and spin the drill and it locks up and this is the prevailing set up for all drills now). Anyhow, since the day i bought it, the chuck would have difficulty equally "snugging" itself around the shaft of anything i put in it, whether a round drill bit or hex bit. I would almost always (literally 90% of the time) have to redo it at least once, sometimes 7-8 times, before it would seat properly and there have been times where i literally gave up.

I lived with it assuming it was just "my" drill even though I scrutinized the chuck "well" closely and could see nothing wrong with it. Then a sat dish installer came over to my house one day and i noticed he had the same set up. So we were talking about it and I asked him if he had any trouble with the chuck and he just looked at me and he said "Yes! I thought it was just me or just this drill but you are having the same problem???" So the point is that I know it is not just me or my drill and also, I am a contractor with 30 employees, all my friends are contractors, so i buy tools by the truckload.

If I were using this as a professional installer, I don't know how i'd live with it and I use it strictly for home projects where speed isn't issue.

In addition, my drill has recently developed some sort of motor problem. While drilling at full speed it will increase/decrease RPM without my adjusting trigger pressure so the motor is either going bad or the relay is going bad. This is sad because I would say that as far as usage, I would be an the lowest end of the spectrum meaning I rarely, rarely use my drill. It barely had a scratch.

It's too bad because the power and the batteries are amazing and the rest of the kit is great. The saw and sawzall are amazing but I cannot recommend at all in fact, avoid this drill like the plague. - Lithium-ion - 18v - Hammer Drills - Drills'

Harbinger - fitness, harbinger

Being a poor college kid, I didn't want to join an expensive gym but still wanted a good workout. Fortunately, I stumbled upon the idea of jumping rope. Boy did this kick my butt. I work out 6 days a week on my crew team but this definitely is helping me keep in shape. I'm also short (5'3) but the one time adjustment works perfectly. The handles are very comfortable for long uses. Though the rope will give you a couple of whip marks when starting out but that only forces you to learn faster. Overall, this is a cheap and effective solution for a great aerobic workout indoor/outdoor. Harbinger 331200 Trigger Handle 10-Foot Adjustable PVC Jump Rope

I've been searching for a jump rope like this for months. I wasted my time and money on non-adjustable 9' , over the counter jump ropes. This "Harbinger Trigger Handle 10-Foot Adjustable Jump Rope" has the perfect handles that contour to your hands and I was able to easily adjust the rope to my height. For a small purchase price of $10.00, I have a great tool to assist me in my cardio training and my overall health.

when i read "adjustable" i thought spring loaded awesome one touch, but this very nice jump rope is a one time adjustment deal. I don't have to share so that's fine with me, so know that. It is a very sturdy well made jump rope. If you share with someone your height or don't share at all i highly suggest this jump rope.

I've used MANY different ropes in some 25 years of working out with jump ropes, and at first, I loved this one. The handles are very comfortable, the weight feels good, the rope moves fast. Unfortunately, though, it's made badly. I used this perhaps half a dozen times (about 45 minutes each time) before the rope broke at one of the handles. So back to the drawing board...

Shipped on time, happy with that.

Compared price with in-store (Bought this at 6.99): Good buy.

Material: Pliable, smooth, heavy.

Function: Speed rope; the rope material is heavy enough to put up some good speed. Handles are comfortable, rope swings without getting rolled up. When storing, the rope will take the shape of how it's stored. If you roll it up, there will be kinks. There are kinks when you first open it for use. I simply just stepped in the middle of the rope and stretched out both ends. If you're really worried about this, you can heat it up with warm water or one the stove or something. If you're really worried.

Not for use on rough floors. On the mat/tiling/wood floor that I use this on, the rope is fine. Been using it for several months with little wear or tear.

If you're trying to use it on gravel or asphalt or some other rough surface, it OBVIOUSLY will not endure for a long time. Get real, all the people with complaints. That will happen with just about any kind of speed rope.

Adjustable?: It's a one-time adjustment. I kind of expected this so it was exactly what I wanted. Adjusts through the handle; you have to use scissors to cut off excess rope, then pliers to fasten a metal clasping. You can adjust to to be shorter, or course, assuming you're resourceful. Use a paperclip instead of the metal clasp that it comes with. (Mine came with a total of four clasps; two were already in place, and two extra, which was good.)

Good workout. Jump rope burns as much if not more fat than other cardio exercises like running. When adjusting the rope (assuming you're going for speed function), stand in the middle and hold the handles until they just reach your armpits.

Five Star Rope. Be realistic with what you buy. It's not a product designed to last forever, especially when you use it incorrectly.

Skipping rope has been apart of my fitness routines for about 10 years now, and this rope is one of the most comfortable easy to use ropes. The adjustment problem everyone is complaining about is probably because they don't know how to adjust it. After popping open the end caps, you're supposed to clamp the metal lock wire with pliers. Each clamp can only be used once. I've never had an issue with it. However, I will say that the rope material wears entirely way too fast. My ropes generally last a 6-7 weeks at most on a 3 day a week rope routine thats 18-21 days of use. Not at all impressive. The middle always gets torn up from hitting the floor. Thats my only complaint with this product. The weight is good, the adjustment method is just fine, and the trigger grip allows you to hold on comfortably without over gripping. It's price is low enough so it makes up for the lack of integrity in the material. It'd be nice if they were sold with a spare cable and extra clamps.

I have this and the Bally Hyperformance speed rope (which is basically a buddy lee rope). I never use this one, i always use the buddy lee because its faster. This rope is fantastic, you can lengthen and shorten and change it back and forth all you want. Its a bit heavier, and not near as fast for me as the buddy lee. Also, it will make your arms get tired faster, which bugs me but this might be ideal for another person. Not as good as the buddy lee (for me), but much cheaper and still a 5 star product.

*The guy below said this is non-adjustable. It adjusts fine. The back cap pops off, and you just loosen the knot, make it the length you want, and stuff it back in the handle. I have no idea why he said that, this actually adjusts very well.

I've gone through a recent fitness craze, and ended up purchasing a few "at-home" workout items. This jump rope has been perfect. It's a huge upgrade compared to the tiny, pasta-shell-like ropes I'm familiar with. This rope spins smoothly, has an attractive feel, and the handles are great. It was the perfect length for me at 6' 4". The rope handles come up to my armpits with one foot standing over the center of the rope on the floor.

If you're interested in alternative cardiovascular activities, or are hoping to stay active indoors on a rainy/cold/hot (Florida..) day, then this it. - Speed Rope - Harbinger - Fitness - Exercise'

80211n - apple, ipv6

Just to be clear on this, I did try the Cisco E4200, which, according with people who knows about wireless networking, is the best wireless router out there but the range was not as good as the Airport Extreme. I have a town house and the router needs to be in the basement, the E4200 signal did reach the second floor, but with more than two devices connected to the router, the signal dropped so much that was unusable. With the Airport Extreme, no problems at all, the signal is fast enough with two or more devices connected. An additional perk is that with the E4200 you can use the USB port just for storage but not for a printer, but with the Airport Extreme, you can connect an USB Hub and have a printer an a external Hard Drive connected at the same time. This router is a keeper.

My setup: 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 1 PC, 3 Macs. Airport Extreme 802.11N (5TH GEN)

Although setup is quick, it is the high performance 802.11n dual RF bands and the creation of my own cloud storage (HD on USB port) that makes the AirPort Extreme a best-in-class choice!

Setup:

After reading the other reviews, I knew this was going to be quick and easy. I started a pot of coffee thinking I could enjoy a cup while plugging in the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and configuring it. Here are the steps:

1. Attached an ethernet cable from the AEBS to my ISP connection. Plugged in the AC adapter and power cord. AEBS powered up. Status light flashed green for a second, glowed amber for several seconds, then flashed amber until the AEBS was configured from a computer.

2. From my MacBook Pro (wireless access works fine for this step), the airport utility app had already launched and was waiting for me (otherwise, go to Applications\Utilities\AirPort Utility.app). Followed instructions that included typing in a router name and two passwords. The default AEBS configuration selects channels and RF bands automatically to optimize speed.

3. Plugged a spare hard drive (in my case: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatted 1 TB HD) into AC outlet and the USB port. As soon as the HD had started, it showed up as a MBP network drive device on 'Finder'. I then created a folder, transferred a file, and read it back.

At this point, the coffee machine beeped to let me know my coffee was ready. I was done before the coffee was even ready - about three minutes from opening the box to being operational! Gotta luv it.

Basic Performance Testing:

Not about to let the coffee go to waste, I proceeded with some performance testing. I conducted some very basic data throughput tests by transferring files from the MBP through the AEBS to the HD. This test arrangement kept my ISP download and upload data rates out of the equation. For the wired tests, the MBP was connected to one of the three AEBS Gigabit ports.

Test 1 (a control test configuration between MBP and HD via USB on MBP):

Write to HD: 33.8 MBytes/sec

Read from HD: 34.3 MBytes/sec

Test 2 (wired data transfer)

From MBP to AEBS via Gigabit port, then from AEBS to HD via USB): 13.6 MBytes/sec

From HD to AEBS via USB, then from AEBS to MBP via Gigabit port): 18.3 MBytes/sec

Test 3 (wireless data transfer - 5 GHz RF band)

From MBP to AEBS, then from AEBS to HD via USB): 7.8 MBytes/sec

From HD to AEBS via USB, then from AEBS to MBP): 12.6 MBytes/sec

Test 4 (range test, 5 GHz RF band between MBP and AEBS with a max capacity of 300 Mbits/sec):

3 ft, devices in close proximity: 300 Mbits/sec

50 ft, indoors, no ext walls in path: 243 Mbits/sec

70 ft, outdoors, one ext wall in path: 144 Mbits/sec

80 ft, outdoors, one ext wall in path: 104 Mbits/sec

Default settings seem to provide high bit-rate connections. Using 'manual setup' in Airport Utility.app, I tested several variations on the configuration without improving the rate/range for the 802.11n wireless provided by the default setting of the APBS. Reading data from the HD back through the AEBS to the MBP was always faster than writing data to the HD. Including ethernet into the data transfer path (Test 2 compared to Test 1) reduced data rates in half. Including WiFi into the data transfer path (Test 3 compared to Test 2) reduced data rates to 2/3. Range test performance was very good for distances within 50 feet.

My own storage cloud:

Originally, I envisioned just using the HD (USB port on AEBS) as a network drive for a SVN (i.e., software version control) repository in support of software development on my MBP. But, I realized that this drive is a common storage location for all my devices (MBP, iPad, iPhone, iTouch) that is accessible wirelessly on my local WiFi. And with a VPN connection, from anywhere with WiFi access to the internet. Simply stated, I have my very own cloud! We aren't talking about a skimpy few GB either, but a full TB of dedicated exclusive mine-only cloud. Now, that's cool.

Why buy the 5th generation AEBS:

- High performance 802.11n wireless performance

- Easy and quick setup

- USB port for attaching a hard drive or printer

- Capability to create my very own AEBS WiFi storage cloud for all my devices

- Guest access to ISP without access to other devices or attached USB device

- Sleek clean stylish look

I am so completely pleased with this purchase.

I switched to this router from my old modem/wireless router in one and am very pleased. Installation of this router was simple and painless, with the Mac doing all the work, literally. Plugged it in and OS X recognized it and setup went without a hitch. I've also paired this with an external hard drive, and now I can use Time Machine to wirelessly create backups, which is perfect for any MacBook/MacBook Pro/MacBook Air owners who don't want to continuously plug in a hard drive to allow backups; just set it up and Time Machine takes care of the rest! Very happy customer. - Ipv6 - Apple'

Gaming Mouse Pad - wowpad, mousepads

I recently purchased this pad and I must say it shocked me. First of all it's pretty big which is a major plus on it's side and my mouse glides effortlessly, sometimes it feels like it's gliding on air. The pad is so amazingly thin you can tuck the edges under things without any problems and the non slip bottom keeps it in place at all times, even under heavy gaming. WOW!PAD LFR48 11.5" x 12.5" Graphite Large Format Mouse Pad

Since I found the Wowpad, I haven't used any other kind- I bought them for both my home and work computers. Some have said they slide on the desk; if mine starts to, I just wash the back surface. If there's any grunge stuck to it, a little dish detergent and water brings it back to life. It should have a slightly tacky feel, not sticky- just enough to stay put. My pad at home is wearing out on the top surface after 2.5 years, so I'm getting a new one. I've gone through several different mice, but I've always stayed with this pad. Both Logitech and Microsoft optical and laser mice all work great on it. It helps to clean the crud off the teflon mice feet, if you start seeing little spots on the pad it's time to clean. If the mouse feels like it's gliding you're fine; any resistance means the mouse feet probably have gunk on them. It's truly amazing how this pad lets the mouse glide smoothly and effortlessly. I recently upgraded to two 24" wide monitors; the pad is still large enough that the mouse doesn't "fall off" the edges. Highly recommended, I won't buy any other kind of mouse pad.

I am giving this mouse pad a 5/5 because it is a reasonable price and I have finally found something that works with my laser mouse that I like. This is my third try! 1st mouse pad the laser mouse wouldn't track correctly on. 2nd mouse pad the mouse tracked fine on it, but the gaming surface had an adhesive backing that was drying out and made crinkling noise. This mouse pad did have a chemical smell when I first opened it, but it went away in a day or two. This mouse pad is large, and my laser mouse tracks great on it. Not really a pad though - more of a gaming surface - very thin and hard with no `pad' whatsoever. Just what I wanted. :)

It is always interesting when product designers take a simple item and make it unexpectedly better. That is exactly what the creators of Wowpad have done. They have modified a simple mouse pad, originally designed to support a rolling sphere, to facilitate laser or LED mouse operation. In this role, it does an excellent job. With precise control and a large area, the Wowpad can't be beat.

Pros

Thin

Smooth operation

Cons

The tacky backing picks attracts debris

Ok yes it's big, yes it functions, BUT for the money you'd think it would at least stay in one place. I was expecting a Mouse pad with the soft foam backing but this is essentially a large piece of firm, thin plastic... and it slides all over the place. I taped mine down.

I've bought numerous brands of essentially this same product in slightly varying sizes (HandStands, 3M, etc.) and I can't say I dislike this one in comparison, however mine does "glide" across the desk as I surf. I'm a meticulous "neat freak" so before I even set it down for the first time I throughly wiped the desk using Pledge Multi Surface Wipes. In case you're wondering, the desk is executive-style with a completely smooth/sealed laquer finish -- it might as well be glass -- so it's not a question of poor adhesion. In any case, the conditions were ideal and I was committed to a permanent installation. Unfortunately, my pad began "meandering" right away. From previous experience I knew to try refreshing the underside stickiness with warm water and it seemed to breathe life into my WOW!PAD. The tackiness seemed to dissipate as the pad cooled down, quickly reverting to its original state.

If you can live with a bit of rodeo clown action in your day then it's not going to be a dealbreaker, but there are less "maverick" options which don't require cattle dogs to keep in line. For example: I purchased a 3M Precise Optical Mousing Surface (MP200PS) in the same order as my WOW!PAD and it hasn't flinched in any direction whatsoever. The tradeoff, sadly, means going from a six-lane highway to a truck stop parking lot.

In my years of searching I have yet to find a large, thin, quality mouse pad at a price any normal person might deem reasonable. You're either relegated to absurdly small "standard" dimensions or haggling with the easily-stained & fraying nature of oversized cloth pads -- the best of which IMHO has to be the HandStands Super Mouse Pad (17.5" x 13.5"). To sum it up, I really like the size & durability of my WOW!PAD ... I just wish it stuck as good as the other reviewers claim! I hope mine was simply a "dud" because I could then *easily* recommend this otherwise excellent product!!!

Pros: This mouse pad is so big that your mouse will never roll over the edge of it. It is very flat and thin, so that you may easily put the right edge of your keyboard on top of it. It is not what I would call a foam rubber mat at all. To my relief, there is absolutely no odor associated with this pad. The underside is slightly tacky, and while others have written that this pad slides around, I have not had that experience. It does not actually glue itself to the surface it is on, but it does not slide around, either. The top has a slight gridlike texture.

Cons: perhaps a bit more expensive than some of the other mousepads, and the design is quite boring, just black and dark gray. - Optical Mouse Pad - Mousepads - Wowpad - Gaming Mouse Pad'

Sonicrafter - multitool, fein

During my installation of a new screen door, I found that it wouldn't be able to close without cutting out some of the wood frame all around the door. After chiseling the jamb a little at at time, I found that I would have to cut about 1/2" off the jamb. I did one side in a couple hours and called it a night. That night I thought about the Fein MultiMaster 250 Start Power Sanding and Scraping/Cutting Tool info-mercial and how that tool could be a big help in cutting the jamb in-place since I didn't want to remove it and didn't have a table saw to cut it anyway. So, the next day I went to Home Depot and purchased the Dremel 6300-05 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit for $109. I would have bought it from Amazon, but I wanted to finish installing the door right away.

USE: The Dremel is quite easy to use. The attachments are not quite "quick-change" since you have to use an (included) allen wrench to loosen a screw and place the "bit" under the washer and onto 12 pegs (which helps secure the "bit" into place) then tighten the screw to secure it. Cutting was fairly easy; I used the rectangular shaped wood and metal cutting tool, but it was a little difficult getting the "feel" of where it was cutting once it was into the wood a good amount. (Now that I think about it, perhaps I should have used the circular wood cutting tool or at least tried it, duh.) The tool is multi-speed (1-10) and cut through the wood pretty easily (on 8 speed). The sanding "bit" was a little more of a challenge to get on as it required the complete removal of the screw and washer assembly in order to get the sanding pad on. I don't know if my pad is a little defective, but it was a little difficult to get it on the pegs. Once on , however, the tool did an excellent job of sanding the frame down to a nice smooth finish. (Although one corner of the "hook & loop" pad got totally wrecked - its a good thing there's three corners to use.)

OVERVIEW: Overall, I was satisfied with the tool. It cut quite well and sanded great. Putting on the attachments was fairly easy, except for the sanding pad. The product description on this site says that it creates low dust, but it made a good amount of dust. Though that is expected when cutting wood with a high speed tool. And it also said that it was quiet, but the next time I use this tool, I am using earplugs because at that high rpm (close to 20,000) it pretty much screams when cutting and my ears felt like I was at a rock concert afterward. I would also recommend a dust mask and closed eye protection for the dust. For the price (cheaper than the competition), the Dremel did a good job and is, to me, a reputable, trusted brand. Dremel 6300-05 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit

I was looking for a tool that would reduce the time it would take to remove grout from my bathroom shower. The walls and ceilings have the 4x4in tiles and the floor has the 1in tiles. The grount blade works very well. One thing to note about the blade is that you can turn it in various configurations so you can also get the corners. Excellent design. I have had no problems with the the blade falling off as per other comments. The blades are about $7 cheaper from amazon than Home Depot. The vibrating action does not kick up a lot of dust as other circulating tools and it rarely skips so you do not damage the tiles. Overall, i would definitely recommend this tool to anyone.

Used it immediately upon receipt. Absolutely great tool for both homeowner and pro. DO not spend tons of cash on the "real name brand" as this Dremel version has all of the power and the tips and tools all fit both the Fein and the Dremel. I did a job that would have taken an hour trying to remove wood embedded in a window install in under a few minutes. Forget the time, the neat and clean cut and removal was great. Recommend this tool highly.

This tool is perfect for the weekend DIY-er, but is most appropriate for very small jobs. I have had success with short cuts in light wood (builder's doors, flag poles, particle wood) and the tool is a convenient size for these jobs.

My only problem so far was when I tried to cut an inch off the bottom of an interior solid wood door. The tool got the job done, but with a fair amount of sweat and elbow grease. I haven't had any problems yet with it overheating, but the tool does get quite warm to the touch. Also, because this is an oscillatory tool, the saw has a tendency to jump around if not held firmly in place when making cuts.

The sanding feature is nice, as the triangular shape of the sanding pad allows for access into corners. However the sanding pads are velcro-backed and are specific to this tool. So replacing them could be costly if you have a larger job and will require multiple pads.

Overall, I've been pleased with this tool as an addition to my collection when breaking out the circular saw seems like overkill. I would definitely recommend this tool for quick jobs around the house with its limitations in mind.

PROS:

-convenient size

-multiple functionality in one tool

-availability of optional accessories

CONS:

-oscillatory action of saw can make erratic cuts if not held firmly

-not appropriate for thick wood, large jobs

I wasn't overly impressed with this tool. After seeing the info commercials for the heavier version of this tool I was interested. Since this version is 1/3 the price and is a brand name I figured I'd give it a try. It did just ok.. I needed to notch out a 2x4 in a wall to mount a safe. Since there was a couple of nails a circular saw wasn't a good option.. This tool struggled to cut a spruce 2x4. It was pretty slow going and trying to cut a 16d nail was a joke. Note I was using the Metal/Wood blade. I ended up using a good old chisel and hammer.. I played with it a little more in the shop and just didn't see a lot of use for it. The ability to notch out molding for cabinets, ect is probably its main purpose. That and as a make shift jam saw. Using it as a scraper or to remove thinset just doesn't seem very practical. I guess if you had a small work area and your not in much of a hurry. Really though a manual scraper works as good if not better. And a air chisel would work much better for doing tile repairs. I gave it 3 stars because I think they are a little misleading on its uses. It also IMO kicks up as much dust as any other saw. Which doesn't bother me other then it being advertised that it doesn't.. For small very specific jobs it has its place and is probably worth the hundred bucks to some. - Oscillating Saw - Fein - Multi-max - Multitool'
