Amazon Kindle Fire - kindle fire, fire

I have been getting Autoweek Magazine for more than 15 years and think it is the best auto related magazine of them all. It is bi-weekly, so it is up to date. The contributing editors, like Denise McCluggage, have been around cars and racing forever so they can give insights that other mags just cannot. Others, like Natalie Neff, have a real way with words that make the car stories come to life. They seem to have a pretty fair bias in their reviews, with the only exception being a bias in favor of Porsche, no matter what Porsche does. It has good racing coverage, good long-term reviews with fair reporting and interesting insights as to what is happening in the automotive world right now. In buying it through Amazon, I can get it at a price even cheaper than as a current subscriber. AutoWeek (1-year auto-renewal)

Autoweek comes more than once per month, so they are usually first with much of the news and car tests that car enthusiasts are interested in. It is a little pricey for an annual subscription, but shop around for price.

I have received this magazine for many years. It is a bi-weekly publication, and I think the quality is higher since it converted from a weekly.

My only problem is that my subscription did not go through as a renewal, so I started getting two copies of the same issue. I believe the correction has now been made.

I get WAY too many car magazines, but you can find subscription deals for so little that it makes sense (sort of). Pick this one up on the newsstand a few times before you subscribe, it really doesn't have anything the monthlies don't, it is NOT weekly anymore, and they follow the same review embargoes as everyone else. One advantage is racing coverage, but there's something now called the internet that is instantaneous so they've lost an advantage there too. In case you're wondering, the best car mag is CAR from the UK. It's expensive but well worth it, the truly addictive crack cocaine of auto journalism. - Kindle - Fire - Kindle Fire - Android'

Cheap Chinese Junk

I would encourage everyone to purchase a copy of this book, the author goes into detail about what needs to be done and carried out in order to make America and other nations energy independent, and get us off of the fossil fuel addiction. I am glad he does not stop at what I call "Conventional Alternatives" like solar, wind, and battery cars, rather, he includes such things as the Motionless Electromagnetic Generator, MEG, patented by Thomas Bearden, and others, which is proven to extract free cheap clean energy directly from the quantum vacuum state. Rotary Tools - multi-tool, multi tool

I'm a trim carpenter/cabinet maker by trade and purchased this tool about two months ago for simple tasks such as cutting back existing baseboard, trimming door jambs or cutting out outlet holes in plywood. Anyone who's used these type tools knows that the Fein is the MacDaddy of oscilating tools and unfortunately still commands a high price. I picked up the RIGID model for something easy and inexpensive to grab in the occasional instances where it's function outperforms the usual jig-saw or pull saw.

I've used this tool about ten-twelve times in the last two months and have purposely put it through it's paces. I never tried the two RIGID blades that came with the unit, instead I went straight for the reliable cutting capabilities of the Bosch blades. I've yet to drain a battery, even after heavy use (mind you the batteries are still new, so that's not that impressive). I recently had to cut a 22"x28" flake board shelf with oak veneer on-site, that was dado'd on all three sides into the upper section of a refrigerator cabinet. So basically I had to plunge cut and move along almost 80" of flake board continuously. I was surprised, the unit kept cutting at the same high rate of speed as when I began.

Prior to buying this tool, previous reviews about it reported the unit shutting off unexpectedly. I did experience this a few times, and it can be annoying. The unit has done this to me not while in use, but after releasing the trigger, and then when it is reengaed there will be nothing. I don't believe it's a battery issue, I believe it's a contact issue, possibly dust getting in somewhere that interupts the connection. I'd also be skeptical to say the shutting off issue is relevant to overheating, as mentioned I have on numerous times probably ran the unit beyond it's intended purpose and experienced no issues, yet I have pulled it out a few simple cuts, and have had the unit shut off. I also purchased the extra battery and have switched them out during one of the tools little tantrums, no difference.

If this type tool was something I had to use everyday I would undoubtedly drop the $300 for the Fein, but since I don't, I can deal with the RIGID's little ticks, but I shouldn't have to. I'm still on the fence about returning it. If it wasn't for the shutting off issue, this tool for it's price would probably be superior in the cordless class. Factory-Reconditioned Ridgid ZRR82235 12V Cordless JobMax Oscillating Multi-Tool Starter Kit

New, just unpacked it. Battery is fully charged. It won't stay on. If you hold it perfectly still, it works, but if you move or touch something it quits. I've tried the head in different positions, reinserting the battery, holding it different ways, etc. There doesn't seem to be any kind of safety switch and there is nothing in the directions.

It looks like it's very cheaply made.

The nice agent at Rigid (phone number in instruction booklet) said they had never heard of these and asked if I was I sure I had the right mfg.

I picked up a new unit from HD for $99. I have used it a number of times and had NO mechanical, alignment, overheating or electrical issues. It has a very solid well built feel. I also picked up a number of other Bosch blades. The unit comes with an attachment that allows you to use Rigid, Bosch or dremmel's blades. I like the Bosch blades the best but the others do work. I have not pushed the tool to its extreme limits but for occasional use this tool more than exceeds my needs and does a great job. It has plenty of power and the battery is more than adequate. Moreover, if you need or want to, you can configure the tool for other tasks. I always wanted the Fien unit but could not justify the price for how often I needed it. I think if I used it everyday that would be the tool to get but for the occasional user (and for the money) this thing is great.

I think the "package" they put together is not as complete as I would like but again it is basic. There is no question that this was assembled to meet a price point and not a construction crews needs. However what they have will do very basic projects and if you get a just few more accessories (rec Bosch) it will be a lot more useful too.

Just picked up two multi tools. The Jobmax by Ridgid and the Milwaukee 12v model. Both are cordless, come with a cloth case, universal accessory adapter, are relatively light and balanced. On the plus side the rigid has a light that can be really helpful in certain situations, versatility in the form of multiple tool attachments, is relatively quite, and inexpensive at $99. Against it is the trigger (which is great as long as you only need to hold the saw in a few positions), comes with only one battery, not enough sand paper or blades, and has a issue with the alignment between the motor body and the oscillating head. The blades and sand paper issue is just part of buying a multi tool. While the Jobmax seems like a good deal if you consider that you only get one battery and that the blades that came with it are crap, then you see how they hit their price point. I consider the rest of the problems specific to this tool.

Like I said before if you hold the Job max in only one way then the trigger is actually great. Many multi tools seemed to inherit the on/off switch and layout of angle grinders, ( I believe these are direct decedents, as fein's was the first and looks to be built from their grinders, another tool they are known for). The Jobmax uses a trigger like a drill and is proof yet again that Ridgid for better or worse likes to think outside the box. The best thing about the trigger is that you can use it to control the speed of the tool. The worst thing about the trigger is that it is the only way to control the speed of the tool. Unlike a variable speed drill controlled only by a trigger, the Jobmax is not made to be held still while in use. If you want a slow speed and are moving the tool around it can be easy to accidentally give the tool a little to much juice, if you or the tool are bumped. Controlling the tool at certain cut angle is seriously compromised by the trigger configuration, and I think that this is likely the reason that every other manufacturer of such tools sticks with a switch. Yes I realize the tool head can be mounted at different angles but this is a hassle and only alleviates part of the problem

The deal breaker for me is the alignment between the motor body and the tool head. My unit allows quit a bit of play. Not only does this make using the tool for accurate work a bit more difficult it does little to reassure me of the build quality. The tool head side of the socket is made of cast aluminum and the motor body side made of plastic. I worry about how that plastic is going to wear after being slammed with each change in cut speed or every new application of the tool. I also worry that the 20,000+ vibrations of the tool will slowly wear away at that plastic. So I suspect the fit will get more sloppy fairly quickly.

So this ends up being another tool that tries to do to much by sacrificing doing one thing really well. If it wasn't also a drill and a hammer etc, it would not need the trigger, or the detachable tool head. I like the idea of this tool. However it works better as an idea then a tool for now. Maybe next go around Ridgid will do better. For now I will take back the Ridgid and get another Milwaukee. - Multi Tool - Oscillating - Multi-tool - Ridgid'

Multimaster - fein, flush cut

I was told by a tradesman friend that I really should have a Fein Multimaster for trim work. He pulled his out to let me demo it. I was impressed with it's various applications of use. The price scared me. I decided later to go for it and I bought the big kit with everything in it. I have to tell you that I have since purchased another for my crews. Everyone who uses one is hooked! DO NOT buy the cheap knock-off versions like Dremel or Rockwell (be there done that)they don't even come close to the speed or smooth cut that the Fein wiil do. Fein Multimaster FMM 250Q Basic Variable Speed Sanding and Scraping/Cutting Tool with Case

I was really impressed when I saw the TV promotions demonstating the versatility of the Feim Multimaster FMM 250Q. Furthermore, since this tool was made in Germany, I had very high expectations that it would be a high quality tool. I ordered my FMM 250Q TOP . . . along with a number of other accessories . . . approximately 2 years ago. I have used it on a good number of projects and have been very impressed with its capabilities. I would have given this tool a five star rating except for two reasons: (1) The fabric on the back of sanding sheets deteriorate very rapidly. Once this happens, the sanding sheet looses its alignment with sanding pad and it is possible to damage the hook-like mounting surface. Eventually, the sanding sheet doesn't stay on the mounting pad at all and has to be thrown away. I have tried a variety of speeds and pressures but I have not found a combination that expends the life of the fabric backing on the sanding sheet. What is frustrating is the sanding surface is still in excellent shape. In my opinion, Feim needs to go back to the drawing board to find a better, more lasting method to secure the sanding sheets to the sanding pad mounting surface. (2) The TV promotions indicated that this tool can the used to cut through nails with ease. However, I find that after cutting through 3 or 4 framing nails that the teeth on my cutting blades are really worn down . . . especially in the center. I have been useing the E-Cut BiMetal Universal Metal + Wood cutting blade. When taking the high cost of these blades into account, it is an extremely expensive way to cut through nails . . . it spite of what the TV promotion indicate!! I personally would have expected more from the Germans!! Well, so much for $399.00 tool.

This tool is the best most universal tool that I own. I really like the power it has to cut anything I've used it on so far. I bought the Dremel version and was very disappointed. The Fein Multimaster 250Q is the best tool by far and you get what you pay for. Yeah it costs alittle more than the competitors but it is by far and superior product.

We bought this for our son, who is remodeling a home, and tonight was the third time he called to thank us and tell us how wonderful this tool was, and that EVERY carpenter should own one; in fact, could not see how they could do without it. He loves his as he is tearing out old cabinets and installing new ones.

we have never gotten him a gift that he called us so often to thank us and tell us how wonderful it is. Doris J. Bogert - Fein - E-blade - Flush Cut - Corded Tools'

Lighting - lighting

These bulbs are excellent! Buy 130v instead of 120v and they will last longer as little electrical spikes won't blow them. Also, they are made in the United States. Most bulbs are coming from China these days. Let's support domestic manufacturing. SYLVANIA 10489 60-Watt 130-Volt A19 Household Bulb, 24 Pack 60A CVP, 24PK

The package arrived in good physical condition. It appears to have been well packaged. Since we ordered 4 dozen of these, we decided to try a few. Eight out of the first twelve were dead on arrival! We have a few lights for which the compact fluorescent bulbs simply will not work. We were hoping to stock up for a while. Now it looks pretty grim. We'll keep the grocery stores' shelves cleaned out, but we will test everything we buy and not just put it up on a shelf thinking that because it appears to be okay it will work.

Unless you prefer blue/green light to read by and have a HAZMAT disposal unit in you house, you MIGHT wanna buy a few boxes of these bulbs.

With the new bulbs you have to take them to special recycling centers, can't just toss them in the trash if they break. And forget 10 years. That is only true if you NEVER turn them off. Normal on and off use renders them no less likely to burn out than the old fashioned bulbs.

These bulbs were basically thrown in a box with only a cushion to keep the box of bulbs from banging around inside of the box, but the bulbs themselves are very fragile and I was disappointed to find 6/24 were dead in the box, left on the front porch by UPS. At that price buying an eight pack from walmart or target for $5 doesn't seem all that bad since you carry them yourself and can take them back if they are bad, and who really needs 24 bulbs these days?

I ordered a package of 24 60W Sylvania bulbs, despite the many reviews suggesting a quality control problem.

Unfortunately, those reviews are accurate. The bulbs arrived totally intact (no broken glass), and the package was in perfect shape. Thus, I don't think there was a problem in packaging. However, because of the reviews, I tested each of the 24 bulbs. 10 of the 24 -- almost 1/2 of all the bulbs -- were defective. I could see the filaments inside were detached. In addition, each bulb had a different amount of frosted coating, and in many cases the coating was non-uniform.

So, bottom line, these bulbs are junk, the product of incompetent manufacturing practices. Under no circumstances should you waste your time ordering these. I am returning mine for a refund, and will purchase light bulbs instead at 1000bulbs.com, bulbster.com, or bulbs.com, all of which I have used before, and none of which has shipped even one bad bulb. I don't blame Amazon for this, but I will blame them if they continue to sell such an obviously substandard product.

[Edit]The day I wrote this review, I returned all these defective bulbs, and Amazon promptly refunded my purchase. Thank you Amazon! I then ordered several dozen bulbs from "bulbs.com". This new order included not only 24 incandescent bulbs, but also many, many other bulbs. I tested all sixty bulbs when they arrived an every single one tested OK. So, instead of 10 out of 24 defective units, I had 0 out of 60. This improvement was due to the fact that bulbs.com shipped quality product, and also to the fact that they did the most unbelievably wonderful job of packing that I've ever seen. My kids had a science project in eight grade where they had to design packing that would let them drop an egg from two stories up onto a concrete sidewalk, and not have the egg break. The folks at bulbs.com would have easily won that competition. So, if you can get things from bulbs.com through Amazon, then order your bulbs there. If not, just go to their site and order from them directly. - Lighting'

Dora The Explorer - dora the explorer, dora

NJPIRG just published that "a red area inside the smile of a cartoon face on a Dora the Explorer backpack, produced by Global Concept Design, contains 150,000 parts per million of a type of phthalate, a substance used to soften plastics that Weissman said has been connected to reproductive and developmental health defects. The federal government regulates some kinds of phthalates, but not the type used in the backpack."

This was the exact same backpack used in the photo that accompanied the article. Buyer beware. Dora the Explorer Backpack Rescue Bag

My three-year-old requested a "Dora packpack".

I looked in my local stores. I really didn't want something with Dora's face plastered all over it. So, I looked here on Amazon and found this. I like it because if you aren't familiar with Dora you'd just look at it and think "cute backpack."

It's relatively small. But her blankie fits into it fine. We use it mostly for bringing her bathing suit and other clothes over to daycare. At home she fills it up with toys.

It fits my skinny three-year old well. She can get into it by herself.

The face is embroidered into the bag. The map is attached to a piece of elastic, so it won't be going anywhere. My only complaint is that the magnets that hold the flap down aren't very strong. It pops open very easily. The magnets are inside two layers of fabric with a plush nap on it.

We haven't washed it yet, but it looks like it could handle a delicate cycle in the wash. - Backpacking - Dora The Explorer - Toys - Dora'

Dry Erase Board - whiteboard, dry erase boards

Nice board! Arrived in perfect shape! Maybe the company had figured out how to ship them without damage, or maybe I just got lucky. Arrived in a box with about half an inch of space on either side. The corners are protected by triangles of cardboard, with thin strips of styrofoam on all sides. Universal Dry-Erase Board, Melamine, 48 x 36, WE, BLK/GY Aluminum/Plastic Frame

I am absolutely thrilled with this Universal dry-erase board. It has now been almost 2 months since mine arrived. I wanted to wait a while before reviewing to be as fair as possible. I was a little skeptical making this purchase due to the horror stories in the form of reviews. Finally I decided if it is broken or not what I was hoping for I would just return it. Because for the price there is nothing even close to comparable in size and quality. To my surprise it arrived fast (I believe 2 days) and there was no damage to the box or the product itself. Once I opened the box I was shocked at how minimal but efficient the padding inside was. I had read a few reviews that really got down on them for there packaging but I found it to be eco-responsible and enough to secure the product from damage. Within 10 minutes I had it hanging and ready for some mind mapping. It was that easy to hang in my home office. I use the board all day every day for school and personal brainstorming. I have not had any problems erasing, no ghost marks, I am really happy. I hope if you purchase this product you have the same awesome experience I have had. If not, well return it!

The lousy shipping was expected, I got the board with a little bit of a bend in the middle. It's not that noticeable when the white board is on the wall, but it is there, and it made putting the whiteboard up a little bit harder. Otherwise this is a great price for this size of a whiteboard and it wonderful, I love it.

Great whiteboard for the price, if you can get one that isn't damaged from shipping. Like some other reviewers have said, the packaging is subpar without only ~1/8th inch thick cardboard protecting it. Needless to say, the packaging is easily punctured along with the board. Instead I purchased one from boardguys, which has much better packaging.

I would not recommend this item. The board was packaged in only a very thin cardboard box - there was no interior cushioning or protection for the face of the board. It arrived with box looking intact - but with a few small tears / holes where the box had been pierced and the face of the board was gouged in multiple places. I'm sure better packing could have avoided this since the box didn't look mistreated.

At least Amazon was great about handling the return.

When I ordered this product I failed to read the other reviews before hand and was unaware of the bad ratings. Those ratings and reviews ended up being true to their word and worse. They shipped it on the first day I could have been able to expect my order to arrive at my door. It only got worse as they extended the expected delivery day from when it once was. Upon receiving my product, my board had a crack running down the board horizontally. Being owner of a different white board i took note that the material on this one was MADE OF CHEAP MATERIAL. Another setback on this board is that it is not magnetic. This board and COMPANY SHOULD BE AVOIDED at all cost. I immediately shipped it back for a return, a hassle you can save.

I was wary ordering this because so many other people were reporting packaging and damage during shipping problems.

Sadly I had the same issue.

The white board arrived - and immediately I noticed a puncture in the outer cardboard packaging. I carefully opened the box, removed the polystyrene packing - and there, in the corresponding location on the white board, was a large dent and scratch.

Working with Amazon now for a replacement.

The white board itself looks good - I'll update this review with details of the replacement.

Update:

A replacement white board was shipped with overnight shipping - and the packaging was punctured on delivery with a hole punched through the whiteboard.

I'd recommend that until this product packaging is improved that you AVOID THIS. - Whiteboard - Dryerase - Dry Erase Board - Dry Erase Boards'
