Digital Rebel

Once upon a time the 50 mm lens was THE standard camera lens and was THE optical benchmark by which manufacturers were judged and compared. Although the basic lens focus has now shifted (at least at the low to mid amateur level) to zooms - you can still benefit from years of research and development that went into designing the 50 mm lens and this here lens may be the best lens, dollar for dollar, that you can ever buy. The question is can you afford not to own this lens?

Years of development have brought us a lens that has a fast aperture of 1.8 - far faster than any consumer zoom lens - and that is sharp as a filed tack. Be forewarned about the sharpness . . . if you are taking pictures of people, this lens is unyielding in its sharpness and may well surprise you and your subjects whose every blemish is captured. The lens has a fabulously shallow depth of field if you want to use the 1.8 aperture to blow out a background. This lens is also ridiculously inexpensive. It is not USM - so it is a little loud. It does not have a moving focus scale. For the money though - this is heaven.

As to the build quality - yes, it is plastic. No, it's not built like the Rock of Gibraltar. If you are going to give this lens extensive use as your everyday lens and you shoot a lot, it may not hold up all that well as one reviewer suggests. However, I've now had this lens and used it fairly regularly (although not as the primary lens) for about 8 years and it is still in great condition. In my mind, spend the $$ on this first before you go and drop $330 on the 50mm 1.4 USM lens and I think you'll find it gets the job done nicely and that the extra $250 on the 1.4 may not be worth the difference in build (major difference), speed (minor difference) and image quality (minor difference). Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens

Wow! My theory now is that Canon doesn't put this baby as their kit lens because many people would decide that they DONT NEED ANOTHER ONE! And many of them would be right!

Like others, I bought the Rebel XT and the 28-135 IS lens. The 28-135 is heavy and priced like a gold brick. I guess it does OK, and I do keep it mounted most of the time.

And like others, I stumbled on this lens somehow, read the raving reviews, and for the price figured, "What the heck?"

This lens in tack sharp. It shows the fire in the colors you photograph. The wide aperture means candles can be excellent lights for portraits. Its narrow field is great.

There are pitfalls though. I snapped a pic of my face at arm's length using autofocus a while back and (1) the focus locked on the tip of my nose and my face was already blurring (2) the lens was so sharp that I saw blackheads clearly on my nose tip I can't really see in the mirror (doh!). I've read that dSLR images are slightly soft to aid in later editing. I can only imagine what it would do on a film camera.

Yesterday while camping I slapped this lens on. Unlike the 28-135, this one is light enough that I didnt notice I was carrying a camera everywhere. At night I put the lens on the top of the car pointed at the sky, set the shutter for 15 secs, and hit the button. Much to my amazement, the lens not only showed hundreds of stars that were invisible to my eyes, but it also found a galaxy. That pic is on the customer image section of this page. You can see what I saw, but the smaller size doesnt do the lens justice.

One quirk of Amazon is that this page keeps alternating pictures of lenses. This lens does not have the distance focus scales on the outside of it.

Zoom is nice for many things. But where zoom isnt necessary, performance is very, very nice. Performance at $70 is almost too good to be true.

Let me close by repeating what has been said elsewhere and will continue to be said here....IF YOU OWN A SLR, STOP NOW AND GET THIS LENS!

UPDATE 12/06 I have owned this lens for about a year now. Over that time I have immersed myself in photography, workshops, books, tests, etc. I have since upgraded to the 30D and a couple of L lenses, and now have a portfolio strong enough that I am now getting dollar signs thrown at me that I didnt even see coming. I say all this to give you some perspective on what I will write afterward.

Now that Ive really learned the difference, I can agree with others that it is a tad soft wide open, but that is to be expected. I read a lens test recently that put the 1.8 against Canons heavweight L glass, and, not surprisingly, the L beat out the $70 plastic wonder in most categories. What might surprise you, however, is that when the lens was tested at F 8 it BEAT THE L GLASS in sharpness! As one that has felt the pain of trading large sums of money for L glass, I appreciate affordable quality...not something anyone can plan on seeing much of in photography.

My 28-135 has since joined my kit lens in the garage. The 1.8 is still in my case with my newer 30D.

With some experience under my belt I now would make the following recommendation. Right now, as you read this, you may have an idea if you've been bitten by the photog bug. You may know that this beast is going to morph into something more than a simple pasttime. If you look inside the depths of your aspirations and you know that you are going to be a serious amateur, bite the bullet and get the 50mm 1.4. Trust me on this one. Eventually you'll end up getting it anyway, so just apply the $70 to the 1.4 now.

If you're just exploring different areas of SLR photography, you cant go wrong with this lens. Case in point- as of this writing the baby in pink in the customer images section of this lens is one of the top-ten rated images of all pics uploaded on Amazon! This lens will allow you to dazzle friends and relatives used to snapshots from point & shoots. It will be the start of what you upgraded to a DSLR for in the first place. For you, the 1.8 is still, by far, the best value in photography!'

Imitation Security Camera

This unit is just what it says and while its all plastic it does seem real from a distance. The red LED stays on about 2 sec then off for 1 sec as long as there are 2 AA batteries. Note that you need to mount it in a place where the camera is 3-4" above the mounting bracket. Overall, a good product for the money. Outdoor Fake / Dummy Security Camera w/ Blinking Light (Silver)

I don't want to embarrass anyone I know by naming names, but several people who saw these thought that they were real. We installed it at the same time as a real security system , so ithat probably contributed to it's apparent authenticity. I have had the same batteries in for a few months now, and they have not quit yet, but it still looks real without the blinking light.

I expected a much bigger camera so it would be highly visible to thieves. This one is only about 8 inches long. However, it does look realistic and I proceeded to mount it within 5 minutes. From outside and 50 feet away, the blinking light looks effective and I think this dummy camera, when combined with a sign that the area is under video surveillance, will deter thieves. It takes two AAA batteries which are not included. You probably should mount it under a roof so it is never exposed to rain.'

Watches Dress Watches

My wife purchased this watch as a 40th birthday present for me. It is a stunning and classic watch! People concerned about buying

luxury watches on Amazon.com should not be in the least. It came with all the proper packaging, documentation and serial number intact. While this product may have been destined to be sold outside the US (an International Warranty Card was included), Amazon.com warranties the product for two years free of defect. The same length in warranty you'd get if purchased from an 'authorized' dealer. Did I mention that it is a beautiful watch??? Baume & Mercier Men's 8687 Classima Swiss Quartz Watch

Baume & Mercier seems to make the minimalist, leather banded watch better than any other brand, and this timepiece is no exception. The face is fairly large (something I aesthetically prefer), but the look is very classy in my opinion. Amazon not only had the lowest price ($600 less than what Tourneau offered me!), but personally guarantees the watch for two years in lieu of the manufacturers warranty. As usual, Amazon delivers!

The watch cost me almost double the price because of duties and took me one week to clear from customs. Either this item should not be sent to Istanbul (I have a New York adress) or I should be warned that I would have to pay custom duties.'

Pretty In Pink

The handle is very comfortable in both directions, the head does scratch up easily after the first use (but so does any hammer i guess). the magnetic nail starter/holder is great. Good tool to have around, I am always choking up on my full sized hammer trying to tap something small. 12 Oz Stubby Claw Hammer - Magnetic Nail Set Lifetime Warranty'

First Person Shooter

I've beat this game and I can say that it takes quite a bit of departure from Killzone 2. Killzone 3 contains more cutscenes, better graphics, and more options to take down the Helghast. The story line is top notch and I can say it is going to be my favorite game for quite a while!

Everything included in the Helghast Edition is of great quality and attention to detail (especially in the Helghast helmet) is what makes this edition worth it in the end. I really enjoyed the soundtrack but I feel like it is incomplete in regards to the best music from the game. I've always considered the Killzone series to have some of the best music so I was a little disappointed.

All in all I recommend any Killzone fan to pick up the Helghast edition, although as long as you get the game you'll have tons of fun! Killzone 3: Helghast Edition

The game is awesome. The multiplayer is good, although could be amazing if they included the ability to create custom matches from day 1 (a patch is said to be on the way to allow for that, like KZ2), and if they gave us back the ability to create multiple spawn points, including being able to spawn off the squad leader. They made the multiplayer more like COD, which isn't bad, but is a huge step down from KZ2 experience.

The helmet, while plastic, is very detailed and I think is pretty sweet.

The art book is put together wonderfully. There are concepts of pretty much everything you could want. And the background of the pages has like a glossy holographic effect to them with a design. Pretty cool.

The figure is one of a kind. Very detailed as well.

The Super Voucher is awesome. It is included inside the case with the manual and SOCOM 4 Beta Code. I got online at noon on release day, used my double xp with voucher, and played until 4am the next morning! I ranked all the way to Colonel 1. You could probably get further than me, as I'm not the best FPS player. I have over 50 career unlocks to use after the xp and access to all weapons expires. The double xp is the best part of the voucher, without a doubt. It says the super voucher retails for $60, so it's like getting the book, helmet, and figure for free. If you look at it that way. The dynamic theme is a killzone 3 helghast theme really. Thought it would be more animated, but its cool. No way to really describe it. I might post a video, if it dosn't infringe on copyright or something.

If you are a killzone fanatic, no doubt you will love this.

If you are a casual fan, you will love it too.

It really is a great package. And with the voucher, makes it worth every penny. My psn is steelerguy24 if anyone wants to play killzone 3.

What can I say that others have not. You have the specs:

*Super Voucher - Soundtrack, Theme, 2 maps (Retro), Behind the scenes video, and all the 24hour unlocks (All digital in 1 code) Also note that the 24hour bonuses expire to the exact moment you entered the code. Enter it at 1pm today it expires 1pm tomorrow. Do not waste it.

*Killzone 3 Artbook (Hardcover)

*Killzone 3 Cloaking Marksmen (Covered only in plastic with no bubble wrap/Killzone 3 display box for you Mint Collectors)

*Killzone 3 Helghast Helmet (Can hold at best 2 PS3 games like Killzone 2 and 3) No the eyes DO NOT light up

If you don't have a good online connection I can not recommend this edition. This is a great collection don't get me wrong, but without a stable connection you cant download half of the goodies and cant access half of this game. The game is a longer and improved Single Player game with Co-Op options but you are fooling yourself if you convince yourself that the online portion is nothing special; on the contrary.

The game has 3 game modes and several objectives in almost every game mode, excluding Guerrilla Warfare which is a simple game of kill all that stands. Capturing points, accumulating kills, transporting items, surviving and mastering your class are the main key elements of the online multiplayer. Find what you are good at and stick with it; most likely you will have a good time when you play with what you are most comfortable with.

Do not be afraid to die. Newbies always die when they get used to a game. Ride it out for about an hour, and when you understand everything you will find yourself enjoying the online portion of the game more than the Single Player portion.

This game does have a nice story that continues 6 months into the future and flashbacks right to the point of the KillZone 2 ending bridging what happened between then and now (Almost. Minus the 6 months in between surviving).

At the end it is known that the story will continue, so if you are hoping for this to be the last of the series to make this Edition have more meaning, then I have to break it to you; it isn't.

This edition is for the fans that want some great display pieces, a well done artbook and a bunch of digital content and a 24hour edge. Is it a worth your money? Absolutely if you intend to use everything in it (like most things, why pay for more if you wont use most of it). This edition was for me because the Helmet was sizable and a great display piece, the Sniper is also another display piece of mine, and the Soundtrack I ported and burned onto a CD for a hardcopy just in case my PS3 died, and to listen to in my CD Player versus the PS3. I liked the artbook but I like it better on the computer and as a hardcopy since I like tinkering with concepts. The maps and 24hour bonuses were something that just sweetened the deal and made my 1st day of playtime very easy; the maps added replayablity (but what new maps dont?).

Figure it this way, the game at its lowest price is half of what a new game costs; fine. The Helmet and Figure are both sizable, unique, and it can not be obtained separately. The look of the Helmet and Figure is also detailed and is a fine display; and like other display items you get them because they look great and they have a long shelf life.

For the price, what I have to say is what should be remembered for all purchases (As it is for all my purchases); Its only a waste of money if I buy it and never use it.

Most people buy the stand alone because they have no desire for the rest of the extra goodies in this edition. For a collector its something that has a lot of substance to it. Its not a cheap looking edition, and the price reflects it.

If you are still on the fence about it, my only other advice is look up unboxing's on youtube.com for an idea of what it is. Made me want it more. If youtube is not your thing then maybe you need to look for pictures. This edition was put together very well, and is third only to the European Edition which got a Steel Game Case versus the Standard Case in North America, or the Limited Collector's Edition which can not be bought; with the only difference being the outer box art and the Helghast Helmet having LED glowing eyes.'

Raw Vegan - raw food, smoothies

These smoothies are decent but this book is not what I was hoping for. After reading reviews on these smoothies, I thought the smoothies would be more nutritionally sound. These recipes are not energy boosting for people who have intense workouts and need energy/electrolytes as well as a good recovery drink. If this is what you're looking for, then I suggest getting the book Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life. I have this book and it's awesome but I just wanted more smoothies and recovery drink recipes. Easy Raw Smoothies does not provide such recipes.

One more note, I'm not a big fan of celery and almost every recipe in this book calls for celery or bananas. I was also surprised to see that the energy workout smoothie just called for water as opposed to young coconut water which actually does give you energy and helps to replace electrolytes. Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Smoothies, Juices, Elixirs & Drinks: The Definitive Raw Fooder's Book of Beverage Recipes for Boosting Energy, ... or Cutting Loose... Including Wine Drinks!

Wow, another great book by Kristen. I would have to say this is one of my favorite books. Since moving towards a high raw all vegan lifestyle smoothies and juices have become a daily part of my menu. I love that you can throw everything into your trusty little blender and whip up a very nutritious and great tasting drink (or meal). It's one of my favorite ways to consume green powder (I get all the benefits, but not the taste). They're great to travel with too. I love the Spicy Sunrise and Spumoni Dessert Smoothie's and the Rockin' Maca Chocolate Shake and the Caramel Chocolate Shake. For anyone who misses their daily latte/coffee than you have to try the My Mocha Latte Fix. It's just blissful.

She also includes plant bloods (juices), elixirs and wine drinks. There are so many to choose from and each is filled with different ingredients that offer a wide range of health benefits. I've always made the standard green juice until I received this book. I was always a little unsure as to what combinations would taste good. Now I have so many to choose from; like the Super Disco Green Juice, Italian Stallion (sorry ladies, it's only a drink), Citrus Zing Elixir, Romantic Clove Elixir and I can't forget the Sassy Strawberry Aperitif (wine drink).

This would make a great gift to anyone who is trying to get their friends or family to add some healthier foods into their diets. I've even got my sister making smoothies and adding in green powder for her and her family. She couldn't believe that my niece and nephew drank the entire smoothie and asked for more.

This book really offers so many great tasting milks, smoothies, juices, elixirs and drinks. It's like having your own juice bar right at home.

Cheers and Bottoms Up!

Kristen's Easy Raw Vegan Smoothies, Juices, Elixirs and Drinks gets 2 thumbs up. Oh my goddess...I found so many wonderful fruit AND veggie smoothie recipes. I am really trying to find more smoothie/soup type recipes. You can NEVER have too many veggies in your system. Period. With recipes like Beauty and the Beast, Love Nest Maca Smoothie, and island Oasis Girl. you will honestly get get bored with these recipes and there are SO many other ways to mix and match em!! And another thing I love about Kristen's books are that she always starts off with her Raw Basics chapter. She includes answers about why you should go raw and the top tips for storing and keeping produce. This book is loaded with information and tips all throughout it! I really want to try the Cinnamon Pecan Milk with some dried figs next week for dessert! yummmmmmmm Trust me, if you wanna shake things up this summer and are looking for very ORIGNIAL tasty smoothie recipes that you can make in a cinch, grab a copy of this book. You will NOT be sorry that you did!

Everr since going raw, a green smoothie has become part of my morning ritual and, truthfully, I don't feel quite right if I don't start the day with a giant smoothie. But I tend to stick to my same smoothie routine, which varies somewhat, but probably not enough. I love this book! It has some great recipes to help me break up my routine. I must admit, though, that using the term 'blood' to refer to juices and smoothies, sort of freaks me out. But getting past that, the recipes are outstanding. I particularly like the Moroccan Beach Sunset - awesome combination of flavors. The Spicy Sunrise Smoothie is great as well. I do like jalapenos in my smoothies, but I don't usually think to use cilantro and basil and it's really good. I've just recently gotten back into juicing, so I really love the juice recipes, since here again I kind of stick to the same routine. This is another great book from Kristen, complete with detailed instructions and helpful tips. Very useful for those new to raw food and those who aren't so new! I know I'm going to get alot of use out of this book and it's going to have lots of dog-eared pages!

This book is an introduction to those new to raw food eating. I took a quick count of the recipes which number 91 or so which provide an interesting offering of easy, fun new recipes for the reader to explore. The author's intent of the writing is to keep it simple, affordable and easy for the user to create raw smoothies, juices, elixirs and drinks. Tips for equipment to make the creations, some brief definitions of commonly encountered terms when entering the raw food realm such as yacon syrup, rapadura, agave nectar, food preparation steps and a brief guidance at the beginning of each chapter help the reader gain a comfort in approaching raw food diet and begin taking comfortable steps away from a more traditional diet. Her chapters, Raw Basics, Smoothies, Nut/Seed Milks and Shakes, Plant Blood, Elixirs and Wine Drinks all are easily followed by the newcomer and the tastes created from the recipes will delight and surprise.

Recipes that include: Liquid Salsa,Strawberry-Banana Jump Start, Luscious Pear,Vanilla Kiwi, Sweet Tart Herb, Pineapple Mango Colada,Chocolate Nut Milk, Cinnamon Pecan Milk, Caramel Chocolate Shake,Itallion Stallion,Super Disco Green Juice,Straight Up Carrot Celery Combo juice,Power Energy Elixir,Sweet Mint Relaxer Elixir are but a few of the recipe choices available.

This book is not written to be the "end all" resource but a gentle beginning and support to anyone looking to create a more lively, vibrant life with the support of a nutritious, energy boosting dietary regimen.

Great recipe ideas to consider and enjoy for raw food veterans as well! - Juicing - Raw Food - Raw Vegan - Smoothies'
