Vizio - 32 inch, led

Picked this up at Cosco's for a total of $463.00 and can not believe the value! The Vizio M320VT LED LCD HDTV really exceeded my expectations. I have no opinion regarding the audio capabilities of this TV as it's being run silent (audio taken care of in 7.1). The picture however is fantastic- VIZIO M320VT 32-Inch 1080p LED LCD HDTV with Razor LED Backlighting, Black

This TV is better than I expected. Not only is it easy to set up and hook up to your home theater, but the image is super crisp. It took me a whole 5 minutes to set it up. Plus it has many features that make this item an even better purchase. (Just read the description.). I'm happy!

Got this as my main Christmas present and frankly, the performance was exceptional straight out of the box. I'm using HDMI cables with all my stuff, so that may contribute to the wonderful display, but even on its own, this device has done nothing but impress me. Set up was very simple, taking less than 6 minutes to get it all set up on my dresser. The colors are vivid and the lines are clear and the remote that came with it really adds to the experience. Living in a college dorm, space is a significant constraint, but not with Vizio. Thanks to their super-thin screen, I was able to fit in on top of my dresser, getting around the other clutter that had made the space previously unusable. By far, the best Christmas present I have ever gotten, I plan to have many more happy years with this TV in college and beyond.

Let me start out by saying thia is an awesome TV. I bought 2 at Costco for $399 each. The box, manual and Vizio support says 100000:1 Dynamic Contrast ratio not the 50000:1 listed. The picture is super nice. I would reccomend this TV to anyone looking to buy.

Being very much a Sony person when it comes to electronics, it was difficult for me to move to the Vizio brand. What moved me was the amazing picture quality that this set provides and the recommendation of family members.

It was easy to set up, just plug and play. I found that the ambient light sensor did not work well in that each time the scene changed, the TV would almost flicker for a second. I turned that off and it was great. It has a few factory settings you can choose from, I like the "movie" setting which seems to have the best mix of lights, dark's, and contarst. The quality of the picture almost exceeds my Sony with a Bravia 3 engine.

I had to fiddle with the sound settings quite a bit before I found a setting that pleased my ears. I'm still not too thrilled about the quality of the sound, but for a bedroom TV, it's adequate. Also turned off the SRS True Volume as that seemed to make the sound change with each scene change.

All in all if you would like an amazing picture with adequate sound with HD 1080 for under $450, this would be a set to consider.

This TV is amazing for the price the picture is absolutely gorgeous and the ease of use is phenomenal. Just hook up and go.But the sound quality is really poor. It's loud don't get me wrong but with everything I play or watch it tends to bring out the background noises and drowns out the voices of the characters.

PROS**

Great picture

Great price

Easy to use and set up

Really light and thin

CONS**

Really poor sound

Not as many outputs as i would've likes

Note** I recommend getting the model VSB200 sound bar for this television because it has the fiber optic input you need for it to work. STAY AWAY from the model VSB205, it wont work with this television.

I am pleased with my purchase. I consider this television a very good value for money. The item was delivered on time and shipped to Jamaica within one week of my order being placed. The installation was easy and I have no problem so far.

I bought this TV because a friend of mine had the 23" version and it was beautiful (and i bought from him). So I decided to buy this one. I guess I didnt hook at the Hz because I didnt think they would go through all the trouble to make a 60Hz LED TV. Wrong. I have another less expensive Vizio that shows 3000 times better. The sounds sucks and not very clear. The menus are as simple as they should be and you to to go to too many places to get from one thing to another. The picture is ok, but no where near that of the 23" version. I would throw this away before I sell it or give it to someone. I gave it 3 stars because it's a Vizio and i like them as a brand. But this tv is just a TV and lacking a lot of features that should be standard on any new TV.

I bought this TV for my 9 year old grandson. The graphics on this are so clear when he plays his xbox. The TV is so thin and light weight. We are so happy with everything about it. I'm so happy I went with the led lcd 1080 32 inch hdtv. - Led - 32 Inch 1080p - 32 Inch - Hdtv'

Twin Labs Multi-vit - supplements, twinlab

I've been taking a multi-vitamin daily for about 17 years now, and I'm always looking for a better value. So far, I have been unable to find a multi that has higher potency for less price. Be careful when shopping vitamins- usually they will try to trick you and list the amounts of ingredients, but when you look carefully at the label it will say (serving size: 3 capsules) or something like that. So that means to get what they are saying you need to take that many, instead of 1 pill. This product has high levels of most ingredients in **1** pill, making it an excellent value. The only caveat is that its a bit skimpy on the B vitamins-- I take an additional B vitamin to compensate. But still: Overall, unbeatable Twinlab Daily One Caps Multi-Vitamin and Multi-Minerals without Iron, 180 Capsules

These vitamins/minerals are pricier than ones found in the grocery store but are of much higher quality. If you look at the forms the substances are in, they are more bio-available than those cheaper vitamins and mineral supplements.

On a personal note, this is the only multi-vitamin that actually made me feel more vigorous. I'm not sure which ingredient did that, but I'd still highly recommend them either way.

My husband and I have been using this vitamin for years. We both seem to be so much more healthy. Neither one of us has had a cold in years. We're not great healthy eaters, so I attribute it to the vitamins. Before we started these vitamins, my husband wouldn't take any. After he tried for awhile and then stopped for awhile, he noticed the difference. Now he faithfully takes them. After a few days of missing them, we feel the difference. I started ordering from Amazon because it was a lot cheaper than my health food store. The only recommendation is more cushioning so the bottle(s) don't move around in the box.

It's hard for me to really give an accurate rating on this item - as I seem to be a more isolated incident - but I did want to share my experience. I purchased these vitamins after a good history with TwinLab Supplements. I have been very involved in the gym for years, and have tried many of their products in positive experiences. Traditionally, I take my multi-vitamin in the morning with any other vitamins or supplements. The current combination consists of: fish oil, vitamin b complex, acai caps (added recently, after problems with TwinLab vitamins), and milk thistle. I should also mention that I have never had problems with nausea in my life; not with foods, seasickness, windy road drive, nothing. As soon as I introduced these vitamins into my morning routine, I would experience intense nausea for a period of about 5 minutes, about 15 minutes after ingestion. I discarded this at first, thinking it was an aberration. After a week of consistent nausea, I split up my mixture to isolate the cause, and it came down to these vitamins. I tried to take later in the day, with or without food, and there was no change. I stubbornly continued taking them, thinking the reaction would disappear, and ended up vomiting. I have little doubt that these are good vitamins in terms of content, but hope that my experiences can help others - whether in relating, or in the decision stage.

The majority of reviews starts with PROS so I shall start with CONS.

CONS:

Instead of taking multiple numbers, ONE A DAY is a convenient way. But there is a trade-off: the size of one capsule is considerably BIGGER. If you are an elderly person with a weak throat muscle, have a throat issue, or not accustomed to swallowing a large-sized capsule, this could be a problem due to its "larger-than-normal" size. Just be aware of this before purchasing. However most of the people will get used to it in the long run.

PROS: My nails grow faster and stronger. My already thick hair has no overall change and the rate of growth is unchanged.

Timing to Intake: I would recommend to take it just before having a meal so that the moisture that follows can help it being dissolved faster for the best results.

I've always liked TwinLab products, and this one is no exception. I got it for my mother, who has nutritional deficiencies due to a very sensitive stomach. She has had stomach upset from other supplements in the past, but she's been taking this one with no problems.

It's nice that you only have to take one of these per day, instead of three (or even six!) that you have to, with some other multi-vitamins. They're in capsule form, too, which makes them much easier to digest.

All in all, a wonderful product that I'll be ordering again!

I bought this product because it was highly recommended by a friend; apparently, Twinlab sources better materials than your average 1-a-day. I also liked that the container is glass rather than plastic. I reuse glass containers so it was an added bonus.

Very good deal with the subscribe and save option.

I got these when I first started working out several years ago and I've been using these since. They have no taste at all, since the outer layer is some sort of clear gel. I've never really swallowed pills until I first bought these, and it seemed easy enough for me. It's got a great mix of vitamins to keep you healthy.

I did not notice anything different about this multivitamin. I read the reviews and anticipated noticing a difference. They are expensive so I will will probably go back to my drug-store brand. They equally had the same effect. - Multivitamins - Supplements - Twinlab - Vitamins'

Restaurants - restaurants, gift card

I purchased this card as a birthday gift. The recipient tried to use the card in a Subway store, but was told it had to be activated first -- quite embarrassing for him and for me. But neither he nor I had received an activation code. In fact, he said the card arrived with a message that it was "ACTIVE" in bold lettering.

After contacting GiftCardMall and speaking with someone who had limited English comprehension, he was told he would have to get the activation code from me. I called them myself to explain I had never received an activation code. This rep also barely spoke English, and after I had explained the problem in detail, he actually asked me to give him the activation code. (?!) Um...that's the point here. He finally promised someone would contact me within 1 business day. When that didn't happen, I called again, and was told same thing. No one ever called.

I tried e-mailing instead, and received a notice that someone would reply within 1-2 business days. Four days later, I still hadn't heard from anyone. Despite 4 phone calls and 2 e-mails to GiftCardMall, they never resolved the issue, or even bothered to call me back to tell me they couldn't resolve it.

After a week of waiting and no response whatsoever, I finally insisted on speaking with a supervisor, who issued the first apology I had received for the problem but asked me to be "patient". Yeah, right. All this trouble and waiting for such a simple, basic problem. I insisted on a refund if they couldn't resolve the problem that day -- not the same old "1 to 2 business days" later routine...again. Several hours later I received a refund notice. Finally, at last, a response.

GiftCardMall clearly has some serious problems in the customer service department -- not the least of which are language barriers. Their reps could sorely use some intensive customer service training and lessons on follow-through. SUBWAY Gift Card

Two years ago we bought $100 worth of Subway gift cards as Christmas presents. Whenever someone tried to use the card, they were told that it was empty. Subway has refused to deal with the problem - they keep promising to investigate. We have never had this problem with gift cards before or since. Just take the frustration out of Christmas gift cards and avoid Subway.

Agree with the other person who said PRAY that nothing is wrong with your card. I purchased 2 Subway gift cards $20/ea at a local Walmart store. One of them worked, the other one came back at the register as "not activated" In addition, I was never able to register the card at the Subway website when other cards there were registered NO Problem. I called Subway, they referred me to Incomm who activates or is in charge of activation. I left voicemail after voicemail detailing my receipt info from Walmart, the card no in question as well as the other card that was fine, the date of purchase, everything I have, yet I can't get Subway or this Incomm to re-activate the card or replace it. It's ridiculous, it has been well over a month and they refuse to do anything. NO ONE ELSE has touched this card besides myself and the store manager. When I tried to purchase items with it, the register came back as "not activated" so the store manager refused to honor the funds on it and their system to swipe and use the cards is horribly defective and ties up the line in the store to use. The first card I used I had to wait well over 10 min while their computer had to be "rebooted/restarted" in order to get the transaction to go through. If you care in these hard times about not losing money, do NOT buy these!

No gift cards from GiftCardMall seem to work and will require you to call them to activate or whatever to get it working. This company is highly unreliable, but if you don't mind having to call to get everything working, then this company is for you.

I bought this gift card prior to reading reviews. After I read the reviews, I got scared and did not give it to my friend, but instead used it for myself (got her a different gift). The guy scanned it and it said denied. My heart almost dropped, but then he rescanned it and it worked. From there I went to about 3 different Subways as they are everywhere and they all worked great. Buying another one now.

Their web site for the cards is set up kinda weird to begin with but today there wasn't even an icon to reload the card. I could do all sorts of transactions if I wanted to except give them my money. Odd way of doing business. So I can't use the card. What's the point of having one now?

Since this card has no mechanical moving parts or sensitive electronic components, and it is made of high composite plastic, it is very durable. I dropped my card down an entire flight of steps, and it didn't even have a scratch! I also accidentally ran over another Subway card with my car. I was a little concerned when I took it to my local Subway, but it worked perfectly! This is an amazing product. My only complaint is that it only comes in $25 denominations. - Restaurants - Gift Card'

Bryce Dallas Howard

Tennessee Williams is the heart, mind, and voice of the South, and Jodie Markell has made an extraordinarily beautiful film of his screenplay, "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond." Exquisite in its detail and dramatic force, the director does not shy away from Williams's view of a rotting, decadent, romantic Gothic Southland. And in Bryce Dallas Howard (with alabaster skin and raven-black hair) and Chris Evans, she has possibly the most handsome cinematic-couple since Dame Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift in "A Place in the Sun." This film is a great achievement, not to be missed. Loss Of A Teardrop Diamond

I find it strange (or maybe just typical for an antsy media world) that this film was shunned so widely, if not overlooked. Also, there seems to be a recurrent animosity against Bryce Dallas Howard as an actress that I find hard to justify. I can think of few others who are showing such promise at an early age.

And as for the screenplay that is the inevitable draw of the film, it certainly falls canonically among Tennessee Williams' lesser works; yet even his lesser works have always carried much magic, and an idiomatic command of poetic elegance that no American writer since has matched.

We all know well Blanche's ruminations about paper lanterns as a metaphor for magic in the world; people far smarter and wiser than me have called those words among the most deeply felt ever written in the English language. In this film, Fisher Willow has her moment too, hers more nuanced than the melodramatic flourish of Vivian Leigh's delivery. She pines for the company not of strangers, but of people who have meaning, who aspire to art and creation, and so forth. They are words meant to be heard spoken, rather than spit out in this no-name review on the Internet.

So all of that is to say, the best you can do is ignore the shrugging critics and watch this film. It does the legacy of Tennessee Williams justice, it is beautifully shot on a very low budget, and it is a fine performance by a budding actress who absorbs the playwright's intentions elegantly.

Jodie Markell has created a period piece with timeless appeal! This never-before produced screenplay by Tennessee Williams came to light at the right time and in the right hands. Markell's insightful direction and Bryce Dallas Howard's brilliant performance transport the viewer to 1920's Memphis with its juxtaposition of high-class southern charm, architecture and posh parties to the inner turmoil brought about through the accompanying societal expectations. Howard's portrayal of a "fallen" southern belle, Fisher Willow, is both heartbreaking and breathtaking. The high-value teardrop diamond earring she wears which is lost represents Willow's desperate struggle to hold onto her inheritance at all costs -- monetary and personal. The viewer is seamlessly transported into Willow's world of truth vs. lies, genuine vs. fake, awake vs. asleep... as she is forced to face her past and present demons on the journey of discovering her true self (and true love, ie Chris Evans) in the process. You don't have to be a Tennessee Williams fan to get swept away by this film!

"The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond," is a real gem but it is not for everyone. If you are not a big Tennessee Williams fan, you probably will not like it. If you are unfamiliar with Tennessee Williams, then you are better off watching "A Streetcar Named Desire," or "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

Admittedly, this is not one of Williams' best stories. The reason the film works so well is the acting and directing.

I had seen Bryce Dallas Howard in a few other films but they did not prepare me for this absolutely thrilling performance. This is not just the best performance of the year but it is the best performance in the past several years. She brings the character of Fisher Willow to life the way that Vivian Leigh did for Blanche DuBois. In many ways Fisher Willow is like a young version of Blanche.

Fisher is a typical Williams' heroine. She initially comes off as a selfish, self centered, Southern Belle but underneath she is much more fragile than anyone suspects. Bryce Dallas Howard is able to bring this out with such complexity and nuance that we can sympathize with a character that we should not care about so much. Even in her best moments she seems as though she could shatter at any moment.

This performance alone is enough reason to see this film.

The story follows the familiar themes covered in other Tennessee Williams stories: loneliness, loss of wealth, fall from grace, and battling interior demons. The teardrop diamond could represent the wealth and status her family once had. It is not just a $5000 jewel. It is a symbol of what her family once was and what was once the old South.

Jodie Markell does an impressive job directing. Her style is old school. She knows when to let the camera linger and when to let the scenes play out. The film does not seem rushed and it never drags. The cinematography is gorgeous with burnished orange dominating the color palette.

"The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond," may not be one of the four best movies made from a Tennessee Williams story but it is not far behind. This is mandatory viewing for any fan of Tennessee Williams.

This is a very wonderful treatment of a heretofore unproduced Williams play. The director makes fine work of the subtleties of the American South. The accents are dead on, and the production rich and beautiful. This is indeed a fine film. SandyRapp@aol.comThe Loss of a Teardrop Diamond [Blu-ray]

I love this movie! It's so different from the current films coming out, that it was a nice escape. It was very realistic with a perfect ending. The actors were perfectly cast, and it was AMAZING to see Chris Evans play a serious character.

Overall, very great movie!!'

Fresh Whole Rabbit - hemp food, hemp

If you like hempseeds like I do. This is your best buy. Amazon has the best price. The seeds came fast, fresh, and are terrific. To me they smell and taste even more fresh then the retail packages. The 5 lb bag comes vacuum sealed. I took 5 mason jars, packed them in and put them in the freezer. I have a big bag in the refrigerator. I toss these seeds all over my salads. :) Nutiva Organic Shelled Hempseed, 5-Pound Bag, Vacuum Sealed

Sometimes health discoveries, (wonders), are simply amazing. Hemp seeds are helping me turn my health around because I'm nurturing my cells. How I know is because I don't crave or binge on junk food and sugars like before, as well as "diet" products, and I no longer feel like I'm starving. This became forefront to looking for real food, other nutrition

"secrets" and, basically, gave me motivation to come out of a slump I was

in while not looking after my health like I should have been. A good friend threw me this life-line which I gladly pass on. Amazon.com had the best price with the free shipping so I'm sticking with good people, and powerful nutrition. My overall health is only getting better day by day, and a good outlook itself becomes good medicine. Do the research, you'll be amazed. Lucky you for discovering hemp seeds. A. prouty

I really enjoy the hemp hearts. I have come to crave them. I am always looking for a good deal and this is indeed a great price for the qty. These come to abt 3 to 5 dollars less per lb. than what I can get locally. If I use auto ship it is 5 to 7 dollars less. My only complaint is the hulls of the 3 brands I have tried this has by far the most hulls and the only one with intact seeds. I doesn't take much to de-hull them but, it is time consuming. I realize "hulls are a good source of fiber" but, my teeth do not agree. I am tempted to pay a little more for less. If this is something that doesn't bother you I urge you to get it.

After first trying this great product from small package bought in health food store, I quickly realized we need to stock up and save. Here comes amazon with the great auto-ship feature which keeps our stock perfectly replenished each 6 months. The seeds come fresh and tasty. I love them, my 7 year old daughter loves them too, we take several teaspoons straight every day, I wouldn't want to loose any tossed over the salad. Taste is better than hemp oil. Perfect protein and EFA source without sacrifice to the taste!

We have been eating hempseeds for sometime - they are an essential part of our diet. I genuinely notice a difference physically when I eat them along. This is a good price and we have gotten good quality from Amazon. PLEASE SHARE SOME WITH YOUR FRIENDS!!

We must work together to make this available to the USA INCLUDING the farmers. We live under an oppressive, authoritarian regime which, only a few years ago, would have attacked you for eating what is literally "birdseed". Wild!

2nd Review w/Suspcription Purchase Method

We have been delighted to have hemp seed finally taken off Schedule 1 Controlled Substance (along with heroin, etc.). I know that is insane to even write this but that is the nature of the degenerate and immoral drug policy barons from the DEA and ONDCP - to twist reality and prohibit what are supposed to be free American citizens from obtaining some of the best food known to mankind beause their pseudo fear of people smoking flowers(and then engaging in violence against these same peaceful, free human beings). NUTS indeed!!

In any event, we have started using the suscription method. This is a great price compared to anywhere else that I have found. It actually takes 4 mos for us to go through 5 lbs. Therefore, I signed up for 2 mos and simply skip one. I will give very great KUDOS to Amazon for how they have set this up - at least for this product, both the product and the system work great!

Greg Logan

Like most good things (unpasteurized dairy, unpasteurized almonds, medical advice not sponsored by drug companies, gold and silver coin as tender in payment of debt, a government that follows the Constitution etc), hemp seeds are almost illegal and hard to get. Thank God for Amazon! These are the best hemp seeds you are going to get, short of growing your own, which, as we all know, would be illegal in the land of the free.

This item was brought up in a forum with a link to Amazon. I've dealt with Amazon before and I've never been let down, Thank you Amazon for the great deals and excellant service! Anyway, this seed is tasty and nutrient packed. I've since read that hemp seed is some of the best food we can give ourselves.

We love the taste & texture of these seeds. I put several tablespoons in our salads & my husband has started scraping out his salad bowl with a spoon! Perhaps the people who did not care for this product are simply not used to the somewhat different taste of raw nuts & seeds, compared to roasted?

This is a great product, very tasty and at the same time having all kinds of good natural nutrients. I buy it on "Subscribe and Save" program, getting 5 lb. every six months and enjoying sizeable discounts. It makes up a part of my regular lunch consisting of an apple, a banana, and a mixture of sunflower, pumpkin, and hemp seeds (1/4 of cup each). The apple a day definitely keeps a doctor away (to my delight), and the seeds provide a close to perfect combination of "right" protein and fatty acids. Pumpkin seeds also keep my prostate healthy, which is important in my age. Hemp seeds give the mixture the additional taste and flavor. - Hemp - Raw Food - Health - Hemp Food'

Congenital Heart Defects - open heart surgery, cardiac surgery

For those who lived through the sixties, the space race was a thrilling and defining endeavor. Few who remember it, however, will have forgotten another race that captured people's imaginations at the same time, the race to get a human heart transplanted. Maybe, like the space race, it was overhyped and exaggerated, but like the space race, the competition was a sensation that had serious aspects and effects on the future. In _Every Second Counts: The Race to Transplant the First Human Heart_ (Putnam), Donald McRae has told an important story, the exciting tale of pioneers competing on the frontiers of medicine, with the losers making lasting contributions and the winner descending into a tragic chaos fueled by fame.

Norman Shumway, who had difficulty in getting into the field of heart surgery. After training, he got a job at the University of Stanford as "the guy in charge of the dialysis machine." The lowly post did bring him into contact with Richard Lower, who was doing experiments in a lab that leaked whenever it rained. The experiments involved surgery on dogs, removing a dog's heart and replacing it, for instance. In 1959, they transplanted a heart from one dog to another, and were ready to do it on humans by 1967. A year before, Adrian Kantrowitz, working in Brooklyn, had taken another tack on heart transplants, reasoning that doing the surgery on infants would be less liable for rejection complications. He was thwarted by others who would not let him take the still-beating heart from the doomed donor infant. Christaan Barnard in South Africa did not have to worry about the overdue acceptance of brain death as being more important in defining an end of life than heart cessation. A brilliant surgeon, he looked in on Lower's dog surgery, knew he wanted to do it, and two years later did it on a human. Although the patient lived but eighteen further days, the world went wild over the operation, and Barnard was catapulted into fame that got him audiences with political leaders and bedtime with countless women. He married three times, generally made a mess of his life, and died in 2001, his intense personality having crammed in risk and daring during his surgical years, but leaving him unloved by others, and stripped even of his membership in professional surgical organizations.

Just as it is hard to name the second man to walk on the Moon, it is hard to name the second one to do a heart transplant, but once Barnard had done it, the procedure took off and is not at all remarkable now, with 2,500 being done annually in the US alone. There had been a real race to do the first one, and Kantrowitz, Shumway, and Lower all could have taken the trophy, and felt (with some justification) that Barnard, for all his gifts as a surgeon, had jumped in precipitously using their results rather than earning his own qualifications by experimental procedures beforehand. No matter how much they may have envied the fame that came to Bernard for his first, none of them envied how it all turned out for him. Shumway, who died earlier this year, continued to work on rejection problems late into his life and remained a beloved teacher. Lower, having ushered brain death into US law, worked with Shumway on rejection problems, and now works part time as a physician for the underprivileged in Virginia. Kantrowitz works in his lab perfecting his Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump, a device for supplementing a failing heart that has saved more lives than actual transplantation. The victor in this race got the spoils, and the ambiguity of that term was never any more pronounced. Every Second Counts: The Race to Transplant the First Human Heart

Many of us remember the news of the first heart transplant, done, of all places, in South Africa. But only those on the inside knew that several physicians were on the brink of reaching this medical mile stone. Donald McRae describes four physicians working diligently toward the first human heart transplant. The efforts, creativity, egos and motivations of these doctors lay the background to this fascinating medical story. It reads like a medical research timeline, interwoven with facts and factoids about the major players involved.

The descriptions of the doctors' various situations will surely appeal to a wide audience -- interesting to medical types as well as lay people. I was impressed by the degree of research and referencing of this book -- without giving it the flavor of an academic publication. I could not put the book down.

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK AND VERY ACCURATE ABOUT THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE FIRST HUMAN HEART TRANSPLANT TOOK PLACE. THE BOOK WAS VERY WELL RESEARCHED PRIOR TO THE WRITING BY DONALD McRAE. I THINK HE WAS VERY FAIR IN HIS APPROACH TO ALL PHASES OF THE BOOK. I WAS DR. RICHARD LOWER'S TECHNICIAN (PERFUSIONIST) FROM 1963 AT STANFORD UNTIL 1989 AT MCV IN VA. I WAS INVOLVED IN ALL HIS HEART TRANSPLANTS SO I CAN ATTEST TO THE AUTHENTICITY OF WHAT MR. McRAE WROTE ABOUT DR.'S SHUMWAY, LOWER, AND BARNARD IN THE BOOK. I BELIEVE IT TO BE THE BEST BOOK THAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT THOSE EARLY DAYS OF THE HEART TRANSPLANT BUSINESS.

LANIER ALLEN, RETIRED CCP & RETIRED CHIEF OF PERFUSION AT MCV HOSPITAL, RICHMOND, VA

This well written book provides insight into the personalities, goals and methods of the surgeons who worked tirelessly to develop the procedure of heart transplant. In many ways it reads like a novel with the moral that the best doesn't always win the race. Society and mankind has benefited greatly from the efforts of most of these people. The winner of the race got the spoils but paid a heavy price. It is well worth reading.

This book does a wonderful job of bringing the story of the world's first HUMAN heart-transplant to life--and for those of us who might be in the medical field--some insight, down the road, of what must have driven other heart surgeons. Remember, the University of Mississippi's James Hardy? Did you know that he used a Baboon's heart--and implanted it into a human? Later, in the 1980's, did you know Dr. Bailey (Loma Linda) used a baby baboon's heart and put it into "Baby Fae"? Remember this? Heart surgeons have been plagued by the Prima Donna syndrome for years--and justifiably; however, this book UNDOES history's fame on Christan Barnard and makes him out to be a fame-driven, and ultimately, sorrowful individual stripped of his fellowship in the American College of Surgeons--while making the American surgeons (Drs. Womens Health - workout dvd, exercise

This was my first Women's Health workout DVD I've used. I also ordered Train for Your Body Type and The Wedding Workout, but haven't used them yet. I decided to give this one a go first, since the split up workouts seemed promising since I have limited time to workout. Boy, was I glad I did! This is an EXCELLENT DVD. First off, you can either do one section for concentrated training, or you can do all the sections and get a total (and I mean total!) body workout.

First off the cardio section was amazing. It was hard, but it was also fun and Amy Dixon is a great instructor. She had me begging for mercy about 4-5 minutes in, but she encouraged me to "keep going, it's only 10 minutes!"

The lower body section clocked in at just under 8 minutes, but you WILL feel it. Amy has you doing a series of lunges, curtsey lunges, and deadlifts with lunges. VERY effective and the pace moves quickly and the moves are compact. Right off, you can feel the muscles you're working.

The upper body section was UNBELIEVABLE. I was dying--in a good way. And the day after I was sore. She does a bunch of great variations on the usual shoulder exercises, bicep curls, triceps and an awesome pushup variation that I love and you won't dread doing, yet is effective as well.

The flexibility workout is great as well, and Amy reminds you that this is not a wasted workout--you're still burning calories, which was encouraging as well.

All in all, this was a great DVD that I probably won't use everyday but I will use when I want a total body workout in less than 40 mins., or on days when I want to concentrate on certain areas of the body. I've never heard of Amy Dixon before but now that I have, I will definitely be buying more of her DVDs. Her cueing is great, she's funny and makes come comical remarks and is not overly peppy or obnoxious.

Great DVD, if you buy it, you WILL be using it again and again! Women's Health: Total Workout in Ten!

This is the second workout of Women's Health that I own. I'm equally as impressed with this as their other new workout, Ultimate Fat Burn. Amy Dixon is a fantastic instructor and she's fast becoming a favourite of mine.

You get a mix in here - cardio, toning and work for flexibility and balance. You always know what's coming up because Amy cues so well. She's encouraging and motivating. The aerbics isn't too dancy and fancy but it does get your heart rate up and that helps burn fat. Then there is upper toning and lower toning, both of which target lots of muscles in different ways (by changing your body angle, you work more muscles). The stretching at the end is what helps your balance and flexibility and it's relaxing yet fun. All you need are some dumbbells and for a bonus workout, you get a stability ball segment so you should have one of those on hand too.

It's not too hard to do, and it's fun yet effective and I'm so impressed that I'm buying these as birthday and holiday gifts for my friends. I think everyone will find this as enjoying as I do, and if you stick with it, the results will come for sure.

This is the third Women's Health workout DVD I've borrowed from the library. I have to say, I wasn't too impressed with either The Wedding Workout or Train for Your Body Type, but I loved this DVD. I'm definitely going to buy this one, and will probably throw in her other Women's Health DVD, Ultimate Fat Burn, as well.

Amy Dixon is a great instructor who cues well and is encouraging without being annoying. Plus, it's a really great workout! I did all 4 10-minute segments together, and it was a really well rounded routine. I'm definitely a bit sore today (especially in the shoulders!). My favorite segment is probably the balance/flexibility cooldown at the end--it's very relaxing with some great yoga/pilates-inspired movements. What a great way to end a workout!

I'd definitely recommend trying this out, even if you weren't a fan of the other Women's Health DVDs.

I guess I am the first to give this video anything but 5 stars. I am in my mid-forties. I haven't been working out for a few years and purchased about four videos to try to develop a healthy workout pattern. I've been going for three weeks and this video has not been my favorite. It may be that my fitness level doesn't allow for the intensity. I have really enjoyed the Leslie Sansone's Eat Smart, Walk Strong : The Secrets to Effortless Weight Loss and 10 Minute Solution: Tone Trouble Zonesmuch more than this video. If you are beginner, you might want to try one of the other videos first.

I finally received my DVD's based on a recommendation by a friend, and I am SO happy that I did. These new Women's Health workouts are so far superior to anything else I have, it's ridiculous. The star Amy Dixon has more energy than anyone I've ever seen. Seriously. It must be a redhead thing. I couldn't recommend them enough.

I would definitely say you should get both of these tapes to mix it up a bit, but for anyone just deciding between the two, here's a word of advice based on my initial testing... The Ten Minute one is definitely for everyone. It's amazing because who can't workout for ten minutes? And there's four different ones. But the Ultimate Fat Burn, while personally is my favorite, is definitely a little harder of a workout. If you're just a beginner, it may be a little difficult for you. But like I said before, I'd get them both. Slow days? Ten Minute Workout. Harder Days? Ultimate Fat Burn.

I hope this helps. They really are amazing tapes. I hope they make more. The look of them is really different than anything I've seen. It's not just in an empty room. It really helps.

Enjoy them, and happy working out!

This video is fabulous. I've done it 3 times per week for 4 weeks and I already feel more toned and more energetic. You don't need any special equipment, just roughly 50-60 square feet of carpeted space and two 3 pound weights. In just over 40 minutes, you get a wonderful, comprehensive workout. Amy Dixon is very likeable. She is encouraging and enthusiastic without being overly bubbly and sweet. The five women who join her on the video are fit, but clearly women who have real lives apart from working out and worrying about their abs. The workout has four segments that you can do separately, or you can do all four in a row for a comprehensive workout. The first segment is a fast paced cardio workout. The second focuses on lower body. The third focuses on upper body. And the fourth is a combination of yoga and ballet moves that improve balance and flexibility and provide a cool down. Many of the exercises throughout the workout also do agreat job on abs and waist. I love doing all four segments in a row. Everything is set to a simple dance beat, so it's easy to keep with the pace. Many of the moves are downright fun. A few were a bit challenging the first time, but they are easy to learn after a few times through. One of the women on the video does modified versions of some of the moves that require a bit extra strength, balance or flexibility. I am in my mid-40s, a mom, and a full time professional. So I can't commit to long workouts at pre-set times. I was thrilled to find an at-home workout that gets my heart rate up for 40 minutes, works on all the muscles in my body and is (amazingly!) so fun that I look forward to it. Thank you Amy Dixon and Women's Health.

NOTE 5 MONTHS LATER: After a few weeks, I only had time to workout on Saturday and Sunday mornings. But that was enough. I lost 9 pounds without eating differently, though I look as though I lost more because I replaced fat with muscle. I dropped a full dress size. And I wore bikinis this summer, for the first time in 14 years! - Amy Dixon - Fitness - Workout Dvd - Exercise'

Cordless Drills - drills, cordless tools

When I was in the process of shopping around for a backup drill to my Makita 14.4V cordless (an EXCELLENT product, by the way: over 350 lbs of torque for under 100 bucks ), a friend who owned one of these refurbished Ryobi models lent me his for a day and I was quite taken with it, as it had more torque (it feels like 100 lbs or so, which is more or less the amount of force a handyman can generate turning a screwdriver by hand) than I had expected it to & the trigger's response was very good (i.e. it wasn't so sensitive to pressure as to make it difficult to quickly find the precise RPM speed at which you wanted the bit to turn). Of course, I was even more impressed when I was informed of its price. Indeed, considering that you get TWO batteries - whereas most reputable brands provide their inexpensive models with only ONE battery - and considering what the cost would be if one had to BUY a second battery (so that you'll always have one charged up & ready to go whenever you suddenly & unexpectedly need to use your drill), thirty bucks for this set is quite a good deal.

I have now had my (own) factory-reconditioned Ryobi for two months and it & the batteries have held up well (well, maybe the charge could last longer, but, then again, this product wasn't intended for non-stop, tradesperson-like usage). As for the fact that it's refurbished, well, who cares? The drill still comes with a one year warranty & it's better to have a factory-reconditioned name brand drill than a new piece of crap, like an AllPro or Turbo Shop model.

A couple of tips: 1) as this drill produces only about 100 lbs of torque, you should get yourself a good set of drill bits (which would be the case with any drill that one purchased - I suggest cobalt bits or at least titanium ones; while you're at it, you should also purchase bits for removing damaged screws, something that you probably won't have to use very often, but are nevertheless very handy to have in a pinch) and drill pilot holes before driving in screws; and 2) even reputable brands provide cheap carrying cases for their low to moderate-priced cordless drills i.e. they shod them with thin, flimsy, plastic snap-closures and, instead of actual hinges, hold the two sides of the case together with a thin, strip of flexible plastic, both of which break through repeated use A LOT faster that one would think, so I recommend that you apply a flexible plastic adhesive to the closure snaps & attach hinges to the bottom of the case (after first cutting off and sanding down the aforementioned flexible plastic strip) so as to prolong the life of the carrying case. Factory-Reconditioned Ryobi HP412K 12-Volt Cordless Drill/Driver

This is a good choice if you like to charge batteries. Every time I want to do a job, I find that the batteries have discharged since the last time I worked, and so I have to wait for who knows how long (since the charger does not indicate when the battery is fully charged, it's just guessing) until I can in fact do the job. Which is always a great pleasure (not) when you have gotten everything lined up to do the job.

Ryobi makes an ok drill but the batteries are so bad it's a joke. I had two of these drills, one where the batteries work but held a charge for less than one would expect, and one where the batteries NEVER charged! Low quality control. I now have Bosch drills and batteries that work.

I spent about a year researching drills before purchasing this one. (OK--I'm slow, but I hate making a bad purchase.) I was hoping for a Makita but found this one for about $20 off on sale and decided to just get it. I like every bit as much as the Makita drills I have used. I do a lot of art work that requires drilling and this stands up to many tasks very well. Have not tried using it on metal or brick yet but it works well on all types of woods, dry wall, etc. Would definitely recommend.

I had an older Ryobi drill that I LOVED and used on everything for many years. I'm a home, fixer upper, not a contractor or certified anything. I went through a few batts and chargers, and finally, had to buy their new versions, because they didn't make batteries that would fit the older models.

Well, the newer batteries completely suck. You CANNOT charge a batt, and stick it in the box, and expect it to get you through a job a few weeks later. I had two fully charged batteries sitting in the case for about three weeks, and I couldn't drill through a single piece of thin (2-3mm) metal going through both batts. Totally unacceptable. 3 months, fine, batts lose charge, everyone knows. 3 weeks? Not good enough. Due to this, I have to keep a batt in the charger at all times. Period. It sucks, and isn't typical of the quality I came to expect with this brand.

If this was a store-brand, it would probably get 3-4 stars. Since it's ryobi, and due to the cost, it get's two stars.

If you buy one of these, you'll probably get the model that I returned.

What a deal! I was going to buy a new battery for my old 9.6V drill and when I found out I could buy a 12 volt complete system for less money than a new 9.6V costs I was blown away. This is a great little drill with all the power I needed for most of the jobs I do in my shop and home. Can't beat the price and I am impressed with the quality. - Cordless Drill - Drills - Cordless Drills - Cordless Tools'

Razor Sweet Pea E 100

I purchased this for my 8 year old. This has been a joy of his for quite a few months. It runs well, peppy and the battery seems to hold up for a very long riding period. He has had times in excess of 1 hr. riding around the house and driveway.

The only thing which is minor that annoys me is that when you corner very sharply the chain protector drags the pavement. No damage is done but it seems this part of the scooter should be higher off the ground.

Overly recommended for children of appropriate ages. Get your child one, they and you will not regret it. Razor E100 Electric Scooter (Sweet Pea)

Here's my experience with this scooter: I bought it for my 8 yo daughter. It worked for exactly 1 minute and then the motor wouldn't turn anymore. The box says "Don't return to the store. Call the manufacturer and we'll take care of you". So I called Razor. The customer service lady had me go through the motion of "troubleshooting" the problem. She concluded "It's very common, the battery died because these things sit on the shelf too long, I'll send you new batteries." Two weeks later, the batteries arrived. It was not a trivial task to replace them. You have to disassemble the entire deck of the scooter and induced wear and tear on the screws and mounts. Charged it back up and guess what - NO GO. Called Razor for the second time. The customer service lady had me go through the motion of "troubleshooting" the problem. She now concluded "Oh, it's the wiring assembly to the batteries that's faulty. I will send you a new wiring kit." Two weeks later, the kit arrived. The same painful procedure to disassemble the scooter and install the wiring kit. More wear and tear on the screws. Charged it back up and guess what - NO GO. Called Razor for the third time. The customer service lady had me go through the motion of "troubleshooting" the problem. She now concluded "Oh, it's the fuse assembly that's faulty. I will send you a new one." Two weeks later, the fuse arrived. The same painful procedure to disassemble the scooter and install the fuse. More wear and tear on the screws. Charged it back up and guess what - NO GO. Called Razor for the fourth time. The customer service lady had me go through the motion of "troubleshooting" the problem. She now concluded "Oh, it must be the battery charger. I will send you a new one." Two weeks later, the new charger arrived. Charged it back up and guess what - NO GO. By now, I was convinced that the motor is fried and there's no fixing that. Called Razor for the fifth time. The customer service lady had me go through the motion of "troubleshooting" the problem. She now got all upset like it's my problem that nothing has worked. She suggested I take it to a lawn & garden shop to have a technician "look at it" at my expense. So here's the moral of the story: Razor will play the "parts game" with you to death until your return deadline with Amazon runs out. So, if your scooter doesn't work, send it back to Amazon ASAP. Do not pass GO and absolutely do not call Razor or your're SCREWED!!!

I bought an E100 from Amazon for my 7-year-old son about 45 days ago. I can tell you that only rain and wet roads have prevented him from riding it daily!

At first, my wife and I questioned my judgment in buying it for him. The first time he got on it, he lost control of it had a bad-looking crash. He hopped up unharmed though, so we gave him some time to learn. Every day since then, I have found him being diligent to charge it and eager to ride it.

So, here's my list of pros and cons.

Pros:

1. The battery lasts a good hour of uphill/downhill riding.

2. The large, pneumatic tire up front makes quick work of bumps and rocks.

3. The wide standing surface allows for his feet to be together, side-by-side, if he wants.

4. The scooter is sturdy and solid.

5. The handlebars and shaft can be separated from the body for transport.

6. It's quick enough for fun, but not so fast as to be dangerous.

7. It ships in two pieces: Handlbars/shaft assembly and the main body. Attaching the two pieces is all the assembling that's necessary.

Cons:

1. The brake is insufficient. It will eventually stop the scooter, but don't let your kid(s) rely on it. Teach them to steer out of situations and release the throttle. It will not stop my 9-year-old (65 lbs) son when he's rolling down our slightly sloped driveway. Of course, the effectiveness of the brake is directly proportional to the strength of the rider's grip, but the gripping power of kids in this age group is probably less than what this scooter-brake combo needs.

2. The rear wheel is like one on a regular Razor scooter - solid and slick. This works well on most dry surfaces, but be careful because it can and will slide in more situations than a grooved, rubber tire would.

3. The drive chain attaches on right side of the back wheel, and it has a cover over it. That sounds like it should be a good thing, but the cover is actually so large that it prevents most right turns. If you turn more than just a little to the right, the cover will make contact with the road, and the back wheel will lose contact with the road.

Notes:

1. There is an on/off switch on the battery.

2. The motor engages after the scooter reaches 3 mph.

3. The manual recommends charging the scooter for 12-18 hrs.

4. The scooter is heavy enough to render it useless without the motor. Don't expect that your kid will continue to use it as a push scooter when the battery dies.

5. The scooter did NOT ship in plain packaging. It shipped in just the scooter box. It was for my son's birthday, and the surprise was nearly spoiled when delivery came.

Summary:

This scooter is a good buy for the money, and so long as you are aware of the issues that come with it, it will make for a fun toy. My son still tells me that this scooter is the best present he has ever received! If you have the money to get the 200 or 300, I would recommend doing so as long as you're comfortable with the increased speed/power.'

Stretchable Book Covers - stretchable book covers, book sox

My boy loves this cover and wishes it came in other colors. I bought him an assortment of these Book Sox and he likes them all, but this is his favorite.

I have my doubts that it will last for the entire school year (it's a bit thin),but he's had it for 3 months now on his biggest (history) book, and neither the cover or the book is showing signs of wear and tear. He also claims he gets comments on it all the time. The picture, I guess, just doesn't do it justice. It's also easy to "install" and these covers stretch to fit a variety of differently sized books.

Recommended if the paper bag covers we used to make just aren't good enough anymore. : ) The Original Book Sox - Jumbo Ecto

I bought 3 of these for my child's textbooks. They are attractive and durable- we had one leftover so i used it to cover a 1500 page textbook of mine- stretches to fit, protects great and looks nice. Highly recommended,

This was just the thing we where looking for. My son wanted something different so we went on a search and found this one. His friends even asked him where he got it. It's very durable and washable which is very nice. It seems to keep it's shape and color holds well. no problems with it. It got to us very quickly and the price is nice also. - Book Cover - Book Sox - School Supplies - Stretchable Book Covers'

Cleansing Wipes - makeup remover, cloths

I would not use anything else after using these for 3 months now. Very effective at makeup removal, balancing for combination skin (really good on oily areas without overdrying). Also help to minimize mild rosacea, it's not completely gone but visibly faded - something I couldn't achieve with pricier brands. All in all freat value and solid product. Added bonus - if you travel these can be taken along in your carry on, not screened out as liquids. Ponds Orginal Clean Wet Cleansing Towelettes, 30-Count (Pack of 4)

The Pond's clean sweep make up removers are great. I tried to switch to a cheaper brand and broke out immediately. The price is very reasonable when ordered from Amazon.com. I keep them next to my bed and in the bathroom making it very easy to wash the make up off before bed. Also, great for camping as it does not need water. I have very sensitive skin and these have not given me any problems and does not have an over perfumed smell like some products. I highly recommend them.

I recently tried the Ponds Clean Sweep Wet Cleansing Towelettes. I like the convenience of cleansing towelettes but I was disappointed with the Ponds Clean Sweep towelettes.

The Ponds have a stinky smell to them instead of a clean or pleasant smell. They are also a little too dry to be a wet cleansing towelette. They claim it removes all makeup, even waterproof mascara but after I used the towelette I still had traces of makeup left on my face. I had to use another cleanser to remove all my makeup which kind of defeats the purpose of a convenient towelette.

I do not recommend the Ponds towelettes. There are much better and cheaper ways to clean your face.

Ponds cleansing towelettes are the best makeup remover and facial cleanser I've ever used. I've tried Neutrogena and drug store brands and they were either never wet enough or left my face feeling greasy. With Ponds, it gets all my makeup off (even waterproof!) and does not give me a greasy or oily feeling afterward. I honestly don't really even have to rinse off with water after use. Also, the towelettes are a great price for how good they are. Highly recommended!

I'm one of those busy moms who often lets her own needs fall by the wayside in favor of the needs of my family. Sleep is a luxury I can't afford to induldge in as much as I want to so sometimes other stuff has to give for the sake of my health and sanity. After a few months of misery living with a newborn who did not get the concepts of day and night I had to start finding ways to help myself perk up in the morning. Coffee is great but one of my favorite parts of getting up after being well rested is getting washed up, putting on make-up... ya know... all that stuff that makes YOU feel human. But with a baby who needed feeding and diaper change and all that stuff there was simply no time so I bought some of the Ponds Wet Cleansing Towelettes, Morning Refresh, 30-Count (Pack of 2) to at least give me a clean face I could pull off while holding the baby. I LOVE them!

After enjoying those for months now I decided to give the original cleansing clothes a try, mostly for mornings when I have to rush out, for post-gym and for make-up removal at bedtime. My skin is really sensitive and I recently found out I have mild rosacea so I've been watching what I use a little more carefully. These feel great, they're very moist, I live in a very dry and windy climate and haven't noticed any increased dryness even though these do contain alcohol. Overall I've been really pleased. I've had no trouble removing mascara easily (with no eye irritation) but I don't care for waterproof formulas so I cannot speak for the quality there.

While I don't intend to use them everyday I really like the convinience and quality of this product for those times when a sink and time for a good washing just aren't available.

I found these for less than the generic brand that I was going to buy. I was using Boots face wipes for a while and was looking for a less expensive alternative.

I found these and was elated (they were even on sale!) At first I was concerned that they were too 'wet' and left too much on my face. It evaporated quickly and didn't make my skin feel dry.

These are excellent at removing powder, foundation and lipstick. Although I had no problem with ordinary mascara, it wasn't all that great with waterproof. (Although to be honest, I have never found anything but specific eye makeup remover to do that well).

These are refreshing, easy to use and stay moist in the package.

I love this product & have been using it for a couple of years, sure comes in handy while traveling, you don't have to rinse it off. Great at night when you are just too tired or busy to do the usual routine & my skin looks good.

OK, first off I purchased this because it claims to be the "best" make-up remover towelettes and removing impurities. UMMM...disappointed in this. Makes me not want to buy any other brand towelette either. I had makeup still left on my face and my regular mascara didn't completely come off.

I usually use another brand of make up removing wipes and am pretty well satisfied, but I saw these at the drug store and decided to try them because they were cheaper and claimed to work better than the brand I use. Not so. They wipes are too dry and they don't work well for removing eye make up. I like that the cloth is thick and feels good, but the performance isn't what I expected. :( - Makeup Remover - Ponds - Cloths - Cleansing Cloths'

Old Town

Raymond Bial attempts a monumental task- tracing the history of ghost towns in a children's book. He does not succeed. The book is populated with some lovely color photography of a couple of ghost towns in the American west. The text is easy to read, better for children eight and up. Quoting Mark Twain is always a surefire way to endear an author to this reader, and Bial does this on a couple of occasions. According to the book, Twain once wrote of Virginia City, Nevada: "If a man wanted a fight on his hands without any annoying delay, all he had to do was to appear in public in a white shirt or stove-pipe hat, and he would be accomodated." The book fails in its one main objective- a history of ghost towns. Bial uses so many generalities, but few examples, that some kids might feel like they are being talked down to, especially considering the book's bold title. Bial also glosses over the violence of the west, sugar coating Billy the Kid, and the gunfight at the OK Corral. Instead, Bial writes of phantoms roaming the abandoned sites, as if everyone should take the term "ghost town" literally, and murder and mayhem is swept under the rug. No, I do not think your kids need to see crime scene photos, but ignoring the violent past would give children a false sense of what many people went through back then. We do learn life was rough, and death comes quickly, but I found the book to be just as dry and empty as the towns Bial attempts to describe. The photographs are nice, until further reading in the credits indicate that only a couple of places were photographed, ghost towns that are now tourist destinations. The book is under fifty pages, maybe Bial should have concentrated his subject to in-depth profiles of a couple of ghost towns, instead of jumping from the Gold Rush of 1849 to George Custer to Wild Bill Hickok, without any chance to put these historical events and figures in context. Women and children are mentioned, but kids may have been able to associate more with the book if children's lives in these towns one hundred years ago had been explored. Bial claims there are tens of thousands of ghost towns spread across all fifty states, yet he only mentions a few in passing. "Ghost Towns of the American West" is a very average children's book. Kids interested in history or cowboys might be better off finding another source. Raymond Bial tries to put too much in, not realizing he never comes up with enough. Ghost Towns of the American West (Historical and Old West)

"Ghost Towns of the American West" is an introduction to the ghost town experience. Raymond Bial effectively communicates the history and mystique of these testaments to American tenacity. He explains how many of these towns are remnants of the boom and bust economics of the early West. Like Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane, some of the famous Western characters are discussed. The violence of such towns is well documented. Without being melodramatic, the eerie quality of the ghost town is described. As would be expected from a book for young readers, brothels are omitted. It is the illustrations that make this book stand out. The poetic photographs are eye candy. A couple of historical images are shown, but most of the photos portray modern day ghost towns through a nostalgic filter. The verso indicates that most of the shots are from Arizona's Goldfield, Apacheland and Old Tuscon ghost towns. The text is good for readers of at least a fourth grade reading level. While "Ghost Towns" has fifty pages, the text is relatively brief given the large and lush use of photographs. With humor, drama and historical authenticity, Raymond Bail effectively captured the essence of the American ghost town.'
