Good Product - paper shredder, home office

This is a very good machine; especially, if you are able to get it for under $130.00.

Wish List:

1. Turn off the lights after after 30 minutes of inactivity.

2. Have the LED lights up the whole center display, when lit.

3. Four all-around-type of casters (with locks like the two being used), instead of the two all-around-type casters and the two big wheels.

4. The shredding is not exactly confetti size. It is cross-cut into pieces approximately 1 ½" in length by ¼" in width. I would prefer if the length were under ½".

Additional Information:

5. Machine weighs less than 30 lbs, not the 40+ noted in the description.

6. Shipping weight nears 42 lbs; I believe the information noted in description is reversed.

7. I could not find this machine in Royal's website; it may be new and has not been entered.

Bad design:

8. Grab handle is a dangerous when attempting to roll the shredder by this incorporated handle. This may cause you (the user) to breaker your a finger. Solution: Do not use the handle to move the machine; move it using both hands and not the handle.

9. The Forward and the Backward arrows on the activation buttons seem to be in the wrong direction. These would be applicable if the feeding was to be done downward and extraction was to be done upward. But it is not, it is feed towards the back and extracted towards the front; therefore, it activation keys should be reversed.

All in all, it is a very good shredder; I only gave it four-stars because of the Wish List. Hopefully, Royal will listen to the above comments and incorporate them into this product.

Final words on this product, I would recommend to buy the 16 or 15 page Royal Shredder on four caster wheels as they have a much better design. These have side handles and are easier to move around. If Royal eventually makes a 17 or 18 sheet shredder based on the four casters and side handles design as the 160MX and 150MX, then that is the way to go, but not the RL170MX with the two caster wheels and two side wheels. I needed a shredder that could handle very thick junk mail without the need to open.

I found the prior reviews very helpful - so thought I would leave one as well.

I agree. It is a great shredder, great quality and a great buy!

It tears through very thick junk mail without a problem.

I used it for several hours continuously and it did not jam or overheat once.

It has a huge waste container and the blue LCD screen and LED lights are cool.

I would highly recommend.

p.s. -- I also agree that the grab handle design is absolutely nonsensical and completely useless.

I suggest you find a place for it to live and don't move it.

This shredder works quite well, and shreds many sheets at once. Quality seems pretty good, after many uses the blades have not become noisier like some of the cheaper shredders out there.

One concern is that during shredding, sometimes a faint metallic clicking sound can be heard above the shredder noise, almost like something is loose inside of it. I haven't been able to pinpoint the problem, and Royal Machines customer service have said that this is a normal noise and that I shouldn't be concerned.

Also, after an extra long shredding session ( 30 mins or so ) I noticed a smell coming from the shredder. I turned it off and opened the basket to discover faint wisps of smoke coming from the shredder. Alarmed, I left it alone the whole day. When I went back to use it again, it worked fine and no more smoke.

Because of these concerns I rated 4 stars instead of 5. For such an expensive shredder I was rather hoping there would no concerns at all with quality.

I ordered this shredder based upon the reviews I read and the great price. The order arrived in just two days. This shredder has exceeded my expections (1 days use). It replaces an Aurora shredder that cost 3 times as much. Go to Staples and see the shredders they sell there. They are more expensive and are rather flimsy. The Royal is a much more durable construction. A fantastic buy!

After experiencing several low-cost shredders, I paid extra for this model expecting it to last a long time. It worked fine for the first few months, then began slowing down and working less efficiently. Today, just six months after purchase, it died. On inspection, it seems the flimsy parts broke or bent. The warranty is almost worthless. The purchaser has to send a letter by snail mail explaining the problem, wait for a return order, then package and ship it, and pay shipping both ways. It was easier and much faster just to junk it and get a new one at half the price and two-day shipping.Royal Machines RL170MX 17-Sheet Heavy Duty Cross-Cut Shredder with Auto Start/Stop and Auto Reverse (29172A) - Great Shredder - Paper Shredder - Credit Card - Home Office'
