If you are using a non-Motorola protective case, see note below. Unlike some reviews I've read, I found this mount to be well designed and sturdy enough even for rough roads. If the base is mounted on a near vertical surface, then the holder will be, a minimum of 6 inches away from the mounting surface due to the way the articulating joints are designed. There's more latitude when mounting on a near horizontal surface like the top of the dash. There's an included stick-on smooth disk so the suction cup will work on textured surfaces. If you are not using a protective case, no problems. If you are using a Motorola case, then you will need to remove the spacer insert that comes pre-installed - lift two clips and it comes off.
If using an aftermarket protective case, you may need to make some adjustments with a Dremel tool in order to get the micro USB connector in the mount to go into the phone far enough to charge the phone. I'm using this case: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VSICYY/ref=oss_product (excellent, btw) and had to remove material from the holder along it's bottom edge and along the inside surface of the bottom corners. Just take your time with the Dremel and keep checking to see if the phone charging indicator comes on without having to press the phone down hard into the mount holder. When you've removed enough material to allow the phone to sit down in the holder, it will do so easily and the charge indicator will come on. This dock works great. Made specifically for the Verizon Droid X so it is expected that it would work great for that phone. One note. The dock I received came with the car charger plug in the kit. It is not listed or shown on this page but that is the package I received. Unfortunately for me I also purchased a car charger cable because everywhere I had seen online sold them separately. It even shows it as a combo purchase here on Amazon. Don't know if that was by mistake or not but don't buy both because you may end up with double.
Shipped by Amazon very quickly as usual, but the unit itself is just so so. The fit of the phone in the unit is extremely good as is the range of adjustments, however I find the frame to be excessively large blocking more than the average amount of visibility for a Nav system through the windshield. Most annoying though, is that the support arm simply isnt stiff enough and at lowish vehicle speeds on anything other than the smoothest roads, the unit vibrates / resonates.
I love everything about this car mount. You can mount it on your dashboard or on your windshield. It adjusts in 100 different directions and then you can lock it into place so it doesn't move. The other really nice feature is that the charger plugs into the mount, not your phone, so all you have to do is pop your phone in and out. Most mounts for GPS units require you to plug the charger into the unit, and then mount the unit separately, so this way makes a lot more sense.
The dock is very strong and feels very sturdy. It obviously fits the Droid X perfectly, but if you have a case on your phone it probably wont fit unless you take it off. I would get a universal dock if that is the case. It is kind of expensive, but it's expensive everywhere, especially in the VZW store. This was the best price I could find that also came with a charger. Mine too came with the incorrect charger, but they did quickly issue me a replacement.
This mount worked great with my Droid X. The phone went into the special GPS mode when it was inserted into the mount. I also received a rapid car charger in the box and it seems to work well too. The mount is easy to adjust with up/down, left/right, and tilt features. Suction cup is easy to stick and was easy to remove when I wanted despite the good suction/grip it had on the windshield. My wife commented on the large foot print of the mount, but that isn't something that bothers me. But it is worth mentioning that, yes, the mount certainly isn't low profile. My only complaint is this unit seemed to transfer a little more vibration into the phone compared to other windshield mounted GPS units that I have used in the past. I was still able to see/read the screen with no issues, but the shaking was visible.
In theory this is a great product... Maybe I got a defective model, but mine ALWAYS falls down. It holds up fine mounted to the windshield, but I used the included mounting disk to put it on my dash. During the summer months, the mount would separate from the dash disk at least three times daily. In the winter, I probably have to readjust the mount twice a week, because the mount will just separate from the mounting disk. Other than that, it functions with the CarDock features and such. I just find it super annoying that I have to readjust the mount often.
I don't think I had the dock for more than a week before I realized I needed a new charger. I plugged the charger into the back of the dock the first time I used it in my car, and my phone did not immediately begin charging. I had to push the connector head extremely hard into the back of the dock in order to create a strong enough electrical connection for my phone to begin charging. I tried to charge my phone afterwards just by plugging the charger directly into the phone, and depending on how I held my phone, there was an unstable connection that showed only intermittent charging. I tried to push the connector head harder into the socket, and deformed the terminal so now it doesn't charge at all. It looks to me like the casing around the connector is too thick so that it does not allow for a good connection with the phone or back of the dock.
