The product is made out of plastic, very light and reasonably thin. It snaps onto the back of the iPad 2 on all four corners and locks in place. It's also just as easy to take off. It looks very good with the iPad.
It's transparent, so for the most part, you can see everything on the back of the iPad. The product name "GreatShield" is printed on the bottom of the cover. This covers the logos/symbols below the "Designed by Apple in California..." engraving on the back of the iPad. It doesn't affect functionality, but I thought I would be able to see the entire back of my iPad, so that was unexpected. I didn't notice this in the product pictures, but it's there... oh well.
Now you're probably looking at this product because it's advertised to work with the Smart Cover and it does, very well actually. I'm sure you've tried to stand the iPad vertically with the Smart Cover. Well, this back cover raises the bottom part of the iPad enough that the weight gets distributed more to the back and allows it to lean more on the folded Smart Cover. That was a nice surprise.
The part I didn't like, and the reason I gave it 4 stars, is that the top area between the power button and headphone jack is exposed. I don't understand why they couldn't cover the area between the microphone and headphone jack and the area between the power button and microphone.
In the end, the product will protect the back of my iPad and works with the Smart Cover, so I'm keeping it. :-) GreatShield Smart Cover Buddy Snap On Slim-Fit Case for Apple iPad 2 - Transparent Clear
This was the exact same product I was looking for which works pretty well with the smart cover and of course protects most of the backside (except for the gap between headphones & power hence 4 rating). It's definitely not heavy and not thick either. I would definitely recommend this great product.'
