Extended Warranty - kindle 3, extended warranty

This warranty extends the default warranty coverage to 2 years. Translation: if the Kindle came with a one year warranty, buying it will give you TWO years of total warranty coverage, NOT three.

IF, after paying for coverage and reading the terms you don't agree, you have 60 DAYS to cancel and get your money back. This is a good thing.

As far as warranties go, this one is okay. Very much in line with what most electronics warranties provide these days. After (a long) while, you receive the actual contract in the mail and it's all spell out on one page, on the back of the 'certificate of coverage'. Going through the legalese, this is what gets covered and how.

- The amount of coverage is limited to the amount you paid to purchase the product (minus shipping and taxes)

- You are covered for operational and accidental damage but not covered if you abuse your Kindle.

- They will fix and replace your broken Kindle and your replacement may be a refurbished model or a newer model or you may receive 'your money back' if they can't do either.

- If your Kindle breaks three times you get a replacement and coverage ends at that time.

- There can be only ONE replacement under the plan (see above).

In addition, you will not be covered if:

- your dog (animals) or insects damaged your product

- it was stolen

- it mysteriously disappeared

- you were in a war zone

- you were outside the US

- you used your Kindle in ways not intended or your modified it

The plan does not cover scratches, cracks or any other cosmetic issues for as long as your Kindle keeps working.

As far as service is concerned. Once you contact the provider, they will ship you a replacement Kindle if yours stopped working without waiting for you to send them the damaged item. They will take your credit card number and ship you the replacement and a prepaid postage label you to use with the return. For as long as you send the broken Kindle within 30 days, they will not charge your credit card. If you don't, you WILL be charged for the replacement.

My only issue, as other reviewers noted was their slowness to actually acknowledge the transaction after I purchased the warranty through Amazon. Eventually, I received an email assuring me that the warranty was in effect and a few days later the paper contract arrived in the mail so all is okay now.

I would rate this plan as 'good' because it's backed by Amazon, they will ship a replacement without waiting for your broken Kindle and because they clearly spell out the warranty terms on a one-page contract. It's fair to note that this plan, adding about 1/3 to the initial purchase price, is not 'cheap'. When deciding to go for it I decided for myself that the expense was worth the extra year of 'peace of mind'.

It's 4 stars, mainly for the initial hassle. 2-Year Extended Warranty for Kindle (6" Display, Wi-Fi, Latest Generation), U.S. customers only

Why would you pay almost $40 for a one year extension? Amazon should think about using the same approach as Home Depot. Their extended warranties do not kick in until AFTER the manufactures warrenty expires. That gives the buyer a great bargin with a full 3 years of warrenty coverage!

Had the warranty for the 1st gen kindle - was told that they didn't cover it anymore because it was 'obsolete'. At the rate they're changing them, 2 years from now they'll have 3 other versions.

The 3rd gen will be obsolete. Why bother?

My own warranty is: "take care of my Kindle" and "stash away 40 bucks". Amazon gives a one year warranty which is plenty of time in case something goes technically wrong. After that, if it goes out from manufacture defects and not my own fault (not likely), I would take the 40 bucks I would have spent on the warranty and add another 100 and get the latest edition, because there WILL be an updated version in no less than 2 years, guaranteed. This is history talking. Its been 3 years, and there have been 3 editions released. And they only get better. But if you want to stick with your outdated edition, it will be WAY cheaper on Amazon, eBay or a retailer. I do not recommend paying for this.

Hope this helped..

The warranty is two years from essentially date of purchase. Since the product comes with a default one year manufacturer warranty, really this covers just ONE additonal year. For 40 bucks, I am willing to take the chance in the 2nd year. By then, the cost of the KINDLE may decrease, thus making it worthwhile just to re-purchase it.

It is misleading. It offers protection for only 1 year after Amazon's initial guarantee of 1 year. There are also restrictions on what is covered and there is no way to see what these were before buying the warranty. I had to cancel my purchase.

Just received my thrid Kindle in less than 6 weeks. I will wait a year before I decide if the Amazon engineers produce a Kindle that will work properly with the expensive cover that seems to damage the Kindle causing it to freeze and repeatedly reboot before I would even consider purchasing a this warranty. The one year warranty included with your new Kindle includes accidental dropping, I was asked repeatedly if I had dropped it. I hadn't. I bought the expensive cover...

The Kindle isn't the expensive factor- it's all the books purchased. In very little time the Kindle owner will have purchased books that far exceed the price of the Kindle. Amazon knows this and will want to you to have a Kindle that works so they can keep selling books, magazines and newspapers. - Extended Warranty - Kindle 3 - Ebook - Kindle'
