Israel Kamakawiwoole
It's not often that I review individual songs, but this song is so immaculately performed by Judy Garland that I can scarcely imagine anyone ever doing it better! "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" has such universal appeal because so many people have dreams that they wish would come true. People listen to this song and identify with the little girl named Dorothy (Judy Garland) who wanted to be more understood and respected by people, especially members of her family and the people working for her family whom she knows.
Judy hits every note so well that it's obvious to anyone that after this performance in "The Wizard of Oz" she was destined for superstardom--and she did become a superstar practically overnight when audiences all across the country heard her sing this song in "The Wizard of Oz." Judy possessed a singularly beautiful genius that enabled her to deliver a ballad with so much poignancy you could either cry with deep sorrow or laugh with uninhibited joy as you heard each song she sang.
I recommend this song to just about anyone who wants the perfect example of an evergreen ballad performed at the very highest order. Indeed, this single song alone makes the perfect introduction to the unmatched talent of Judy Garland--so don't be surprised if you want to download many more Judy songs after you hear this--or, better yet, get her CDs and enjoy them over and over again!
Thank you, Judy! Somewhere Over The Rainbow'
