Highly Recommended - photo scanner, canon scanner

SUMMARY

With a few caveats, this is a great little scanner. The best part is that it actually fits in my Targus computer case WITH my laptop. It weighs only 2-3 pds, and runs off USB power---no converter brick to haul around. Scans are sharp and fast. The automatic settings work very well for nearly all typical originals (old photos, business letters, receipts, etc.). Despite some shortcomings, the price and exceptional portability may make this series of scanners the choice for scanning books---because books which need to be scanned are often non-circulating items in libraries or archives.

SHORTCOMINGS

Unfortunately, the particular design of this scanner (and all other LED-based scanners) is that (unlike most fat desktop scanners) it cannot scan 3D objects. Any portion of your document or image which is not in absolute contact with the glass patten will be very blurry. The raised frame raises the edges of any original which does not fit on the glass patten, causing the edges of scans to be blurry. This is particularly a problem when scanning books. Nor can you just press down harder---that warps the glass causing blurriness elsewhere on the page, and may even jam the scanning mechanism. However, these problems may be overcome using the strategies discussed below.

The lid is non-removable, which means that you may be out-of-luck if you need to scan part of a large object. The software is multi-layered, confusing, and difficult to configure to your best use. Caveat, I've used at least three brands of scanner software, none of which were well designed. From the oddly named "MP Navigator" I suggest checking the box, "use the scanner driver" for access to the "Advanced Settings"--or better yet, scan from your graphics (photo editing) program.

NEVERTHELESS

Even though the frame is a problem, it is lower (1/16") and narrower (3/8") than most other scanners, and so, scanning books etc. is LESS of a problem than with most other scanners.

CHOOSING AMONG THE MODELS

The hardware and "Advanced Settings" portion of the scanning program of all LiDE models (at least models 90 to 210) appears to be identical. The major differences between the models is 1) improvements in the automatic scanning functions, and 2) the rated scanning speed (which is apparently software controlled). Despite the statistics, there is little practical difference in scanning speed between the models. The "slower" models are only slightly slower, but are quieter. Since I use only the "Advanced Settings" (never the automatic settings), the 110 is my preference, regardless of price. Canon CanoScan LiDE110 Color Image Scanner (4507B002)

The 210 may be best for children and other users who will never learn how to use the "Advanced Settings", since it claims to have superior automated scanning. The 210 is slightly faster. Canon CanoScan LiDE210 Color Image Scanner (4508B002)

If you plan to scan books and if you do not plan to carry the scanner around much, you might consider a Canon LiDE 700. It has 2 major advantages. The right edge is actually flush with the glass surface (hurrah!!)---albeit there is still an excessively wide margin. The lid opens 180 degrees, so you can scan portions of a large object--albeit there is still an "edge problem" for the other three edges. Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Color Image Scanner (3297B002)

SCANNING BOOKS

It is easy to scan books which have at least ½" of margin between the print and the spine. Place the right side of the scanner at the edge of a table, so that the book hangs open at 90 degrees when placed on the scanner. Place a moderate weight on top of your original (such as a 1" thick book). If you must press down with your fingers, press at the edges of the glass area (or even better, at the corners), not the middle. If you can't quite get in tight enough, place a 1/16" sheet of stiff cardboard directly behind each page before scanning--it is a pain, but it works.

SCANNING CREASED OR FOLDED ORIGINALS

The foam "pressure pad" in the lid is a bit too soft to insure that some originals (such as stiff letters or receipts which have been folded) are pressed sufficiently flat (even with a book on top of the lid). If you notice this problem, then place a stiff cardboard sheet (or a thin book) directly on top of your original, and close the cover.

SCANNING TO A PORTABLE COMPUTER

The scanner draws power only when scanning. However, at least with my ThinkPad---scanning to a portable running on battery-power increases the scanning time by at least 50%. Plan on having your portable plugged into an AC outlet if you plan to scan more than a few pages.

OTHER REVIEWER'S COMPLAINTS AND EASY SOLUTIONS

The automatic settings impose various limitations on the maximum selectable resolution, maximum file size etc.---which can all be superceded using the "Advanced Settings". Despite the instructions, it is not essential to close the lid, but it is necessary to avoid bright light from shining into the scanner. I use my dark microfiber cleaning cloth (folded) to cover any exposed portions of the glass patten when scanning in a bright room with the cover open. The maximum selectable resolution is 1200dpi. If you want to scan at, say 2400dpi, you have to type the value in manually in the resolution window. However, such scans are very slow, the files are very large, and I have found no actual improvement in resolution (detail recorded). The USB cable is nearly 5' long--longer than necessary for a portable scanner. Longer replacement cables, or extension cables are cheap, <$5 if needed. Don't panic about the scary "unlock the scanner before using" notice in the instructions. If you try to scan with the scanner locked, it will tell you, "unlock me". If so, just unlock it.

PRODUCING PDF DOCUMENTS

The direct-to-pdf option is not recommended unless quality is unimportant to you and you will only be scanning single pages or very short documents to pdf. The reason is that you cannot make any corrections to the scanned document. What if you scan a 50 page document, and then oops! page 12 is too dark?--you've got to rescan the entire document. For best quality and flexibility scan to 1200dpi tif files, adjust the images with your graphics program, and then convert (and assemble) the files into a pdf document using Adobe Acrobat (or other pdf editor). Beware that any scan, even of text, is an "image" (not real text) and is likely to be downsampled when converting to pdf, unless you specifically disable downsampling. When using a pdf editor to convert to pdf, select "highest quality" --- OR a specific dpi (1200dpi) --- OR disable "downsampling". Perfectly adequate graphics programs and pdf editors are available free if that is a concern.

OCR

OCR means to convert an image of text to real editable text. Unless you absolutely need real editable text to copy and insert into a document, you do not want to OCR. Unless the original is perfect and in a large common font, the error rate will be very high, and you'll loose formatting, graphics, and everything else than text. In most cases, a much better solution is to use Adobe Acrobat (or other pdf editor) to add an invisible OCR-ed layer beneath the image layer. Such a document looks exactly like the original--including photos or other graphics. You cannot edit such a document, but you can search the document, and copy real text from the document.

OTHER SCANNING OPTIONS

The "Advanced Settings" offers many options such as auto-tone, unsharp mask, descreen, dust and scratch reduction, fading correction, grain correction, and others. I recommend AGAINST using ANY of these options, because in most cases most will degrade your image, you will not know that it is degraded, and you have no control over the degree of sharpening, or color adjustment, etc. "One size does not fit all". It is better to scan with all of the options off, using only the tone curve to adjust the brightness and contrast. Then use your graphics program to sharpen, descreen, reduce dust, adjust color saturation etc. as necessary--and you'll be able see the changes, and undo mistakes.

GETTING THE VERY BEST SCANS

Admittedly, the automatic settings work very well under most circumstances when scanning "typical" originals (and it is the only portion of the very annoying scanning program that the Canon geeks make any attempt at improving). But what happens when the automatic settings do not produce good results? You are stuck with crappy scans---or you have to spend half a day learning how to use the "Advanced Settings". My recommendation---use the "Advanced Settings" even for routine scans. You'll become a scanning wizard in no-time---far better than any "automatic" program. It only takes a few more seconds for fine-tuning per scan once you know what you are doing. You've probably already learned how to use your graphics programs to improve your photos---why not use those skills to improve your documents?

The very best scans are produced by using the "Advanced Settings", and setting the tone curve manually, with all of the various options "off". Pre-defining tone curves and other setting for your particular project makes the process easier. Unfortunately, you have to "summon" your pre-defined settings for each scan. Note that you have to define things in a particular order, or the defaults reset---very annoying.

Don't count on scanning with the automatic or default "Advanced Settings" and then fixing things with your graphics program. "Garbage in--garbage out." Beware that you cannot adequately judge the quality in the "preview" view (which is why I ALWAYS scan to my graphics program and examine the scan before saving it).

SETTING THE TONE CURVE MANUALLY

The default tone curve is line from the lower left corner of the graph to the upper right corner. The easiest way to alter contrast is to add a point at the midpoint of the line (to anchor it) and then drag the curve into a steep S-shape to increase contrast, or a less-steep reverse-S to decrease contrast. The easiest way to alter brightness is to add a point at the midpoint of the line, and then drag it right (darker), or left (brighter). If the white background of documents scans as gray--or there are gray shadows on the scanned page--then shift the upper right end of the tone curve about 10%-20% to the left. For photos you can shift the lower left end of the tone curve to the left to brighten up shadows. Black and white documents are usually best scanned as "grayscale", but with a steep (high contrast) tone curve.

SCANNING (TRUE) PHOTOS

There is little point in scanning most (true) photos above 600dpi. Practically speaking most "sharpening" functions have little effect above 300dpi. Ironically, with judicious use of sharpening tools (in your photo-editing program), photos scanned at 300dpi can look much sharper than those scanned at 1200dpi. IMPORTANT: Sharpen ONLY at the same size (and dpi) that the photo will be printed (or displayed on a monitor).

SCANNING HALF-TONE PHOTOS

Half-tone (screened) photos (from books, magazines, etc.) should be scanned at the highest resolution possible. You can use Gausian blur (in your graphics editing program) to improve (descreen) them for viewing and printing. Use the lowest possible value which eliminates the dot pattern: typically, 4-5 pixels at 1200 dpi, 2-2.5 pixels at 600 dpi. Caution---if your scan consists of both images and text, you don't want to blur your text---instead (in your graphics program) select only the images for descreening.

FILE FORMAT

If you want the best possible scans, you should save to tif---but the only tif files the scanner driver produces are huge uncompressed tif files. Solution: scan from a graphics program which allows you to save files as loss-less tif (LZW compression) which will produce files as small as 1/20 the size with no loss in detail. If it is inconvenient to scan from a graphics program, you can scan to JPG. JPG files are always degraded by compression, but if saved nominally uncompressed, degradation does not become significant unless you repeatedly edit and save the files. Solution: scan as jpg, but convert the files to LZW tif before editing them in any way. LZW tif and uncompressed jpg files of the same image are about the same size.

DUST

Scanners are NOT sealed against dust. Do not use canned air to clean dust off the patten--they blow dust INTO the scanner. Clean the scanner frequently with a damp cloth. Protect from dust--such as in a plastic bag when not in use. (I have a desk drawer a little larger than the scanner where I keep it). Even with the most careful use, dust will eventually accumulate on the inside of glass and/or it will develop a haze. The inside surface of the glass cannot be cleaned nor replaced. The solution is to replace the scanner--which is far more acceptable if it is an LiDE 110 for only $50 or so.

PROBLEMS

I have owned a three different models. The third is new. After about 1000 scans each, the first two began showing irregularities (as faint moire patterns) when black and white half-tone photos were scanned at 1200dpi (or color half-tones scanned at 600 dpi or higher) and then descreened. Typical users would not notice any problem.

The drivers are not common between models. You cannot use two different models on the same computer, nor is there any "remember my settings" option when deinstalling the "old" drivers, nor is there anyway to save or backup your settings, or transfer them to another computer.

My experience with 3 different LiDE sanners is that frequent stopping and restarting while scanning takes up much of the actual scanning time. This could either be a problem with inadequate buffers or inadequate power. Hypothetically, if it is a power problem, a USB Y-Cable, which taps the power of two USB port may help. A USB Y-Cable did NOT improve scan time with my HP xw4200 Workstation, or my Thinkpad running on battery or AC---but in my tests, my new LiDE 110 scanned continously (without stopping and starting) with or without the extra power cable connected. Maybe my original power cords were defective. So, if you experience frequent stopping and starting, particularly in a portable running on battery, try a different power cord. If you need a longer or shorter cord that one that comes with the scanner, consider purchasing a USB-Y cord. It can't hurt, and if it doesn't help, you don't have to plug in the second cable. If you decide you need a longer cable for desktop use, I suggest a Cables To Go 28107 USB 2.0 Mini-B Male to 2 USB A Male Y-Cable (6 Feet, Black). If you decide you'd like a shorter cable for travel, I suggest Bytecc USB2-HD201 - USB cable - mini-USB Type B (M) - 4 pin USB Type A (M) - 3 ft ( USB / Hi-Speed USB ) - black

SUGGESTION TO CANON DESIGNERS

How about a "frameless" scanner (with a removable "clip-on" frame which could be used when desired), and with a removable lid---so that the scanner could be used to scan books and sections of large documents easier? Quick Charger - cell phone car charger, car charger

I bought this car plug from The OEM Shop because it was advertised as being compatible with my Samsung phone, when it is not. I tried to return it, and Edward, in customer service for The OEM Shop basically told me to pound sand, because it had been more than 30 days since I purchased the item (it took several days to get it and several more days to figure out how to return it, sorry Ed!). He was very rude, and not even willing to consider that The OEM Shop had advertised this plug as being compatible with my phone, when it is not!!! BUYER BE AWARE! I would not recommend this vendor to anyone. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NOT A PRIORITY!!!!! Samsung CAD300SBEB/STD Standard Car Power Charger

I have to jiggle this thing to make it make contact in my power port. Then when I hit a bump, the little green light goes out. These are the same ports that provide power to the GPS, Sat. Radio, other phone etc...

One thing we really like about Samsung cell phones is that they all seem to use the same car and wall chargers. This charger is the same one for my 5-6 year old phone, as well as, for my new one. That saves money, as you don't have to keep buying new ones every time you buy a new phone! In addition, this charger works quickly and well. My 6 year old one works as well as this new one, we just bought, for the other vehicle. Very happy with Samsung chargers!

I paid more to order it from this company as they advertised "retail packaging." This was not retail packaging. Just a plastic bag. Guess it doesn't matter since it doesn't work any way. Now I'll have to pay to ship it back. Hardly seems worth it. - Quick Charger - Cell Phone Car Charger - Car Charger'

Monitor Cable - vga cable, vga

Like I write in the title I use this from my laptop to 32" LCD TV! Only reason to do so is to play Netflix instant movies from the "net" without having to watch them on the laptop's 15" screen! At 10' I can pretty much place the laptop anywhere I choose.

You'll need a 3.5 stereo audio cable to tranfer the sound. It plugs into the earphone jack on the laptop.

You could just as easily do the same thing with your desktop PC to your LCD TV, so long as you have the connectors match up.

Lastly, it is a way to use your TV as a monitor, whether or not you play movies. Cables To Go - 28012 - 10ft Pro Series HD15 M/M SVGA Monitor Cable with Ferrites (Black)

Recently moved some things around in my home office...including my PC which meant my 6' monitor cable that came with it was too short...rather than use an extension cable because I've heard they are not as good as an option due to loss of signal strength etc., I opted for this as a replacement cable. I looked at several others in the 10 foot range...read somewhere over 12 feet and you start to lose signal strength and I just needed a couple more feet. The others I looked at...a Belkin for over $20.00, and another for $4 bucks and change...neither had Ferrites and this one did for around $8. Tiger Direct sent it so fast I almost found it on my door step after I hit Place Order on Amazon.com...very nice. I have a big 21" Nokia 445PRO from a long time ago...and this cable give me a nicer picture than the original cable that came with the monitor...no Ferrites there on the original either. Anyway...quality product...great seller.

It works, it connects laptop to flatscreen tv and a projector (not at the same time!). Image quality looks good to me. I see no fault.

If you're wondering - YES you do need a separate audio jack cable to connect the sound output from a laptop to your tv.

Thanks for the excellent cable! I used this cable to connect my laptop to JVC 1080p HD TV (video only, no sound. This cable means to connect to TV as monitor). The display on my TV is much better than my LCD laptop display. The cabe is really thick but very soft and flex so it can turn conners.

Note everybody that the cable is not SVGA but it is UVGA that is the highest quality available and supports HD 1080p. You can check that from the vendor's web. The price is cheap. I saw an SVGA cable in one local store for >$50! So go for it. Now I can use my 40" digital TV as a huge monitor!

Was looking for a way to get Netflix Instant Movies to my LCD TV. The LCD has many different connectors, one being a VGA. Tried and older cable, but it was missing some pins and the image was not crisp. My laptop has WiFi and has bandwidth for movie. Got this cable and everything worked great. Had to reconfigure the display driver from 1200X800 to 1360X768 and it worked like a charm.

I'm getting beautiful 1920x1080 on my LCD TV from my computer with this cable. However, I think I should have gotten the shorter length, this length was to reach the coffee table, now I think it's better to have the computer near the TV, and use a wireless media center keyboard instead.

I ordered a cable so that I could hook my computer to my TV. The cable came quickly and worked well for a time. After a few days the cable stopped working. I contacted the company and they replaced the broken cable with no questions asked. It's good to deal with a company that cares about the satisfaction of their customers.

This was a great buy. A friend of mine purchased it and he loves it as well. Some complain about a missing pin, who cares? It will work perfectly for hooking your computer/laptop up to your HDTV (if it has the right port available). - Vga - Vga Cable - Cable - Pc To Tv'

Hair Clipper - cordless, hair clipper

I was given a beard trimmer for Christmas with all sort of attachments. However, it was a terrible trimmer and was constantly catching my beard hairs, but that's for another review. The point is I needed a trimmer that was more powerful and didn't catch my facial hairs as the one I had gotten for Christmas did.

After quite a lot of on-line research I came across the Panasonic ER224. It looked great from the pictures and reviews, and since I've had good luck with Panasonic in the past, I decided to go ahead and buy it. I bought it from Amazon for only $32 with shipping and had it a few days later.

I usually only shave once a week, but I'll still trim my goatee and mustache as needed to keep it looking well groomed. By the time I had received this trimmer, I was in need! The first thing that struck me was it was much larger than I had expected. The pictures certainly don't do it justice. Then I realized that this trimmer is actually designed to be used as a trimmer for both facial and top of the head hair. I have used it on my own facial hair, and then used it on my 2 yr. old son's head.

What I liked:

1. The entire trimmer is washable. However, you must regularly oil it to keep it in good working order.

2. There are 14 separate length adjustments, even though the dial will show the max numbered length is 20.

3. Very sturdy and well built trimmer.

4. When on, the trimmer adjustment is locked down, and takes a great amount of force to push the trimmer guard down. If you are able to push the guard down, it immediately turns off the trimmer. Excellent safety feature, for your hair that is!

5. The trimmer guard is removable, and beneath it is a smaller trimmer that can be extended to be activated and is to be used to help get at those smaller and hard to reach areas, like under the nose, etc.

6. Relatively quiet operation.

7. Quick charging.

8. Cordless.

What I don't like:

1. The smaller trimmer beneath the trimmer guard works, but is slightly better than the one located on my electric shaver.

Everyday Use Experience:

As I've said I used this trimmer right away on my goatee and was very impressed. It didn't catch any of my hairs once and that's very important to me! The guard was larger than I expected, but works great, and that's all that matters. The trimmer comes with a small tube of oil and a hair brush, which I thought was helpful. I also was impressed that it was washable, however, the brush thus far has been adequate. Especially since it's no problem to remove the guard. After just a few passes with the trimmer, my goatee looked great. That is a good thing about having such a large guard, you only need to go over your beard a few times.

Then I used it on my son's head. His hair was growing over his ears and my wife was at work. So I sat him in the bathtub, turned the dial to a 5 and began... Then I left my wife a message telling her what I'd done. She came home, and the first words out of her mouth was, "What have you done???" However, I thought it went great. Granted his head was all one length, and maybe a little shorter than I was expecting... But besides all that, the trimmer itself worked flawlessly! I was able to trim his hair and again no snags or pulling. He was quite content to let me use it on him as it is a rather quiet trimmer anyways. I have not used the trimmer on my own head because I'm not that daring.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for a great facial hair trimmer, or any other body part trimmer for that matter, then I highly recommend you buy this trimmer. Again, I have not used it on my own head, so I can only attest that the trimmer works great on my son's head, but don't ask my wife... However, that had nothing to do with the trimmer itself, just my ability to use it and choose the correct length, but that's a different story.

The shaver has an overall Panasonic attractiveness.

I hve owned previous similar models and all were first rate in quality.

In fact the most recent lasted YEARS.. i even replaced the batteries which were technically not replaceable because i did not want to let it die.

There is one major drawback to this shaver. The cutting head is not at the frontmost position when you have the guard on. Meaning if you are shaving tight curves on your body then it actually does not perform well since the shaving head is at mid point inside the plastic guard. I think this flaw is a major one but i do use it still, considering. Otherwise the water repellant build and battery life/looks/performance is fine. I do orry about the flimsy plastic guard and the seemingly flimsy notch that holds the height position. So far it has not failed but it could be a BIG BIG problem if you are shaving and it pops to a lower position suddenly.

I recommend this but i also expect more from Panasonic. - Hair Clipper - Panasonic - Cordless - Beard Trimmer'

Lighted Magnifier Floor Lamp - floor lamps, lighted magnifier floor lamp

I love my lamp. There is one improvement that could be made and that is the ability to shorten the lamp when it is a floor lamp. I am short and sit in short chairs and are unable use the magnifier because it does not go low enough for me. OttLite(R) High Definition 3-in-1 Craft Lamp

My wife is a doll artist and does a lot of extremely detailed work on making what are referred to as reborn dolls. In addition she does a lot of work on doll clothes. She began suffering eye strain from our normal lighting and decided to get an Ottlite floor lamp. We looked at one in a craft store and the price was just ridiculous. So we went to Amazon and found this same model at nearly half the price.

The lamp furnishes a bright "daylight" type of light and increases the vision ability markedly. I'm 74 and, believe me, I can read even really small print under this thing. The two "arms" are almost useless for my needs and I don't notice my wife using them either. My wife is very satisfied with the bright clear light and says it aids her work considerably.

I would view the stand as ugly and out of place in our living room and we have no other place to use it. I would regard the lamp as overpriced, even with the much lower online price. Before you buy, you might check out the cost of replacement bulbs as they can be breathtakingly expensive and one of ours didn't last even a fraction of the expected lifetime.

Gary Peterson

I was very surprised to find that the Lamp ships with parts to make it a desk lamp, a clam-on lamp or a floor lamp. The lamp in general is very high quality and confirms what I have always said, it's not my bad eyesight, it is bad light :) I can actually read fine print better without reading glasses under this light."

This lamp is a complete waste of money. I bought it precisely so that I could use the magnifier plus lamp for quilting. Although the light itself is somewhat height adjustable, the arms with the magnifier and clip are not. The magnifier is consequently completely useless unless you happen to be very tall or sit on a high chair. I was very disappointed - the rimless magnifier is a wonderful idea, but is completely unusable because of the design. - Ott-lite - Lamp - Floor Lamps - Lighted Magnifier Floor Lamp'

Kindle Freebie - kindle active content, kindle

You know, the last thing I need is yet another addictive game on my Kindle!

This is a pretty fast version of the classic hand-held game we all played and many times were frustrated with growing up. There are several options you can choose, such as manually moving the tiles or having the Kindle do it automatically (choose automatic as it goes a lot faster and is less frustrating), you can have some "cheat" tips disguised as play tips, and you can make the various puzzles small / medium / large (I like the default medium setting).

On the left-hand side is a timer and on the right-hand side is your fastest time. Needless to say, my "fastest" time is like a tortoise, and I can feel an apprehension on me as the timer ticks, ticks, and keeps on ticking.

The graphics are very crisp and the response time is very fast on my Kindle 3 as compared to the slowness I saw on the free Kindle poker game, so this is a huge improvement. Now, I need to get my kids interested in this one as I believe it makes them think strategically vs. playing a shoot-em-up game.

Overall, I think most people will enjoy this and you certainly can't beat the free price.

Now, if I can just find time to read on my darn Kindle.... Number Slide

Amazon Digital Services does it again -- adding value to owning a Kindle by providing well-made games for free. Automatic tile movement makes the game a breeze to play, and these tiles move a lot better than the little Chiclet ones in the plastic versions. Automatic tile movement doesn't mean the game is played for you; it just means that when you move to a tile adjacent to the sole empty square, that tile automatically moves to the empty square, which is the only place it can move. You don't have to click on the tile. Nice graphics with the tiles edged to indicate where they go. Loving my Kindle 3 for both reading and games!

Use your brain to figure out where to move the numbers to get them in order. This game is fun for adults, and good for children too. Beat your own score, and play with different levels- the bigger you choose the screenshot of the game to be, the more numbers are on it. Great graphic design, format, tips, and easy to play on your kindle. A really fantastic Amazon treat.

Wow, what a fun game this is, especially now that I've paid attention to the instructions and have learned how to move more than one tile at a time!! The Instructions menu is extensive enough to give you some valuable playing tips for this little game. I had the tiles moving automatically and was getting increasingly frustrated. Then I discovered if I put the tile movement on 'manual' I could slide multiple tiles in the same direction, then press the 5-way switch and they all moved together. At this point I'm not worried about my time score from one game to the next, I'm just letting myself become more and more comfortable with playing the game on the Kindle. And actually winning! The Kindle lets me chose between three sizes of puzzles and the manual or automatic tile movement. For a while I thought the "size" of the puzzle meant how much space it took up on the screen so I initially chose medium. I decided to try the "large" size and discovered that it actually means the number of tiles in a game. The small size uses 8 tiles, the medium size 15 tiles and the large size 24 tiles. That 24 tile game is a real challenge for me and my time shows it!

According to the directions the automatic tile movement will give you faster times in game solving because you eliminate the need to press the 5-way to move the tiles. I will gladly ignore my horrible time score in favor of actually completing the game any day of the week. (I'm probably just playing mind games with myself anyway to think the multiple tile slide moves me along better.) Who knows, I might even get the times down to a respectable number and let my kids and grandkids see them.

I normally do not like this type of game, but since it was free, I decided to add it on my Kindle. I played it and liked it - it was easy to do and gives me something to do when I get tired of reading. It's easy to maneuver with the option of automatic slide when there is an empty place. I believe if I had to sit there and slide the numbers, I would not have enjoyed this game. I love it when Amazon offers something for free and just not because it's free, but because they seem to pick out the right ones that people may be interested in. I know I would not have ever downloaded this game if not offered. Thanks Amazon!

I'm a fanatic when it comes to those old plastic sliding puzzles where you have to put numbers in order when they're mixed up or where you have to make a picture out of mixed up pieces. Those were great fun as a child and even more fun as an adult. Then Kindle came out with this game and I've not had so much fun with a "simple" game in a long time! Too cool! This number slide game (out of all the ones out there for the Kindle) has the best graphics, the best controlling, etc of all the games currently available. Highly recommend it.

Great price for a fun game. Nothing new - this game has been around forever but with my age quickly approaching the old status it's good for the brain to stay active and games like this help. I highly recommend it.

This is a rather easy and fun free kindle game. There are sixteen boxes in a square. One is open. The others have numbers 1-15. The numbered boxes are not in order. The object is to move the boxes so that they are sequential - 1, 2, 3, 4, etc., with the blank box at the lower right. Ample, easy to read instructions are given along with helpful tips. Also the kindle can give additional tips while you are playing. You have to option of the size of the board. I found that I could do the puzzle in less than five minutes and enjoyed doing so. - Kindle - Games - Puzzles - Kindle Active Content'

Polycarbonate - polycarbonate, slim case

This feels really great in your hand, the texture is perfect. All relevant controls are still easily accessible. It doesn't really cover the top (power button) or bottom of the device (docking area), but this will certainly help to a degree but unlikely to save the day if you dropped this on concrete. The fact that it is made of polycarbonate though, known for its supple yet high impact absorptive qualities, is somewhat reassuring. But for a slim-fitting case that provides basic protection against scuffs and scrapes, etc. plus a better grip over the iPhone's glossy back, this is great. I ordered a screen protector as well which I highly recommend - my last phones screen was scratched by some keys in my pocket. CaseCrown iPhone 3G 3GS Soft Polycarbonate Slim-Fit Case (Black)

So you need a bit of protection for your 3G? This one fits the bill. For around $10 you can't go wrong. On top of a slim, sleak fit that will not fall off or slip around it was shipped and received by me in 3 days. Almost instant gratification. Only caution I have is don't be fooled by the word "soft" in the description. Silicone is soft, this is not although it does have a bit of a non-slip feel. It does make the phone easier to hold and I am sure it will add more slip resistance capabilites when you leave the phone on your dashboard or any other flat surface. The best part of this case is that the designer took into account all of the buttons, toggles and switches on the phone including the camera lens so all of these are adequately exposed and ready for easy use. The fit is superb and the slim design does not detract from the lines of the phone at all. As you may have read in other reviews the only issue is the interference with a screen protector. Due to the tight fit and the way it wraps around the face of the phone it does curl the sides of the screen protector slightly causing air bubbles to appear but this is easily remedied by a simple trim of each side of the screen protector. No more than 1/32" from each side will do. I used a paper cutter to get a good straight cut. If you want to protect your iPhone but retain the sleek look and feel and fit into a holster, this is the one for you.

I got this case for $4.21 (+ $4.99 for shipping) and believe me this case is one of the best I have seen. I have seen cases similar to this selling for more than $20-$30 in kiosks and stores.

- Doesn't adds to the bulk of the phone (light weight)

- Perfect fit

- Nice to touch and feel

- Display apple logo at the back

I had a screen protector on my iphone and yes after putting this cover on it did put some air bubbles but you can easily sand off the edges of this cover using a small knife without destroying the looks of the cover.

I dont recommend this one at all.

I use it, but thats only because it has already scratched the back of my iPhone a bit. It wont do any further damage.

So, once you put it on, it feels nice on the iPhone, so it got 2 stars.

It didnt get 5 stars because

a) Its hard to take it out

b) When you take it out, you will notice, scratches on the edges. That's because material is hard (feels like solid plastic)

I prefer something thats more gentle on your iPhone and doesnt scratch it. While purpose of this for me was:

1) Protect iPhone from scratches

2) Provide a better grip

It failed in 1) but passed in 2)

I only use it now because it cannot do further damage. I wouldn't use it if I bought another iPhone.

The case fit the phone like a glove, but the sharp edges pushed up my screen protector and created air bubbles. I ordered one for my girlfriend and one for myself and it happend on both of our phones. If you don't plan on using a screen protector this is a great case. If you do use a screen protector you might want to look for a different case.

Bought this case a few months back. Cleaned my phone before installation. Really liked the case, seemed to fit well etc.

I recently removed the case to check and clean out anything that may have gotten between the case and the phone. To my surprise, the case had completely mauled the back of the phone and chrome sides of the phone. I had not noticed before I put the case on but there are two seems running down the inside of the case, these left scratches the length of the phone on the back.

I would have been just as well off not to have had a case at all, maybe better off.

I received this today and was highly disappointed in the quality.

First of all it shows up in a cheap poly bag with no manufacturer info, no advertising, only a computer generated sticker with a description and barcode (and no Amazon packing slip in the box). My first thought was it looks like something I'd pick up from the dollar store, or a knock-off item.

Secondly - the case offers little protection other than scratch protection on the backside. The corners aren't covered and I don't feel this phone would offer any benefits in a fall/drop -

It is fashionable & light-weight, but I"m looking for something to protect my investment, not match my outfit- it's an overpriced accessory. This is going back. - Iphone 3g Accessories - Polycarbonate - Iphone Case - Slim Case'
