Car Speakerphone - bluetooth, handsfree

After reading all the reviews, I initially went with the Motorola Roadster. I liked that it had the ability to read text messages (my teenage sons favorite way to communicate with me) and that it turned on automatically when I got in the car. Once I had it, it works basically as stated but the sound quality was so poor and the fm transmitter was poor. I bought the Jabra 2 and have been using it for the past few days. I was so surprised when the voice came on reading me a text message! Motorola doesn't tell you this but the app MotoSpeak works with other units! Not only that but the quality of speech is far superior on the Jabra unit. So far, I'm really happy with it. Both units pair with 2 devices, both have FM transmitters, both use voice commands.

Based on my primary uses, here's my list of pros/cons for each

Jabra: Pros

Voice dialer is accurate

Display lights are easy to see.

Connects very quickly with my phone.

Good sound from the unit itself

Better FM transmitter (Washington D.C. area airwaves are packed but I get clear sound all around town)

Nice loud sound from unit, can use it if FM station isn't available.

Announces name of caller/texter

When using with GPS, it is clear and uninterrupted.

Cons:

Doesn't turn on automatically, easy to forget

can't dictate a text response

Points for Motorola roadster: Pros

Automatically turns on when I get in the car

Uses motospeak to play texts

More voice commands. Can just say "answer" or "ignore" for incoming call.

Can dictate a text response

Cons:

Voice dial is very inaccurate

Display lights aren't visible, don't know if it lost the connection

If unit is turned off, once turned on, it doesn't connect to phone unless it is first plugged into charger. Could just be a defective unit but a very annoying quirk

sound from unit too low to use in place of FM transmission

Poor FM transmission. Constantly having to change stations which makes it very hands on!

Cuts off the first part of sentece when using phone GPS

only gives phone number not name even though the phone book was downloaded.

I'm keeping the Jabra Cruiser 2 and sending the other back to amazon. Although the ability to dictate a text response is nice, I find it just as easy to call someone back instead. I don't mind having to turn the unit on when I get in the car. If I forget, the unit pairs so quickly that I can do it before I answer a call and not miss the incoming call. Hope that helps!! Jabra CRUISER2 Bluetooth In-Car Speakerphone

I just received the CRUISER2 yesterday and am highly impressed. Once charged all I had to do was turn on Bluetooth on my iPhone4 and the CRUISER2 immediately recognized the phone and started downloading my contacts. I was interested in a powerful speakerphone but one that also allowed me to use A2DP to stream audio. Unlike other reviewers, I found this device really shone using the FM transmitter. All I had to do was push the FM button on the side of the device and it literally called out the radio station to use. As soon as I switched the car radio to the requested station, my BMW328xi actually showed "CRUISER2" on the display. I streamed music and podcasts from the iPhone4 to the FM receiver using the CRUISER2 and the sound was solid with little distortion or background noise. It's not the same quality as a CD but given road noise it was no problem whatsoever and I think it actually sounded better than using the car's AUX input. In the middle of listening to some music a call came in on my phone. The device worked well, with folks on the other side of the call saying they heard me very clearly at all times. I switched between using the CRUISER2 speaker to listen to my call and the car's FM receiver (switching was as simple as pushing a button) and both worked great. At one point I did start to hear some static on the FM receiver and immediately the CRUISER2 called out another station to use. If you've ever tried to use your FM receiver with other technologies like XM radio you'll know how frustrating it is to fish through stations to find a clear signal. The CRUISER2 told me the station, I switched, and a crystal clear signal was restored. Sometimes it's the simple things that make all the difference.

I can't recommend this enough. Small, functional, easy to use, and the ability to use the A2DP to stream music was awesome and much cheaper than having BMW charge me $700 to put the Bluetooth capability in the car. The combination of the CRUISER2 and my iPhone4 was great. Add $5 for a vent-mounted iPhone holder and you're all set.

I got this because I was constantly losing my bluetooth headsets, so I ended up buying something I figured I wouldn't put down and forget.

I use the Cruiser 2 for my iPhone 4.

1. it announces the callers +

2. it can play the music via fm transmitter +

3. battery life is exceptional! ++

Only negative is the FM transmitter

I would imagine with a unit of this size they could've made the transmitter a little more powerful.

In the bay area our airways are really crowded and I always have to swap between a few stations I know are dead.

The 14 hours of use time is actually what I get with the product. It's great because I can leave this in the car

and plug it into the cig lighter when the batteries get low. Or I bring it inside the same night and charge it up.

Even without using the fm transmitter the voice quality is very clear via the built in speakers and if you really wanted

to you can play your music through there as well (not so great quality speakers for that though) - Car Speakerphone - Handsfree - Bluetooth - Hands Free'

Highly Recommended - security, loud

On our recent trip to Egypt and Jordan we stayed at the St. Catherine's Plaza Hotel in Jordan, the hotel was not very secure and had no added security locks or chains on the door. It was 7 am, I was just waking up when I heard steps coming up our staircase outside and then there was a key in our door and our door being unlocked. We had set the GE Smarthome Door alarm the night before and of course when they tried to enter our room the alarm went off scaring them away, I could hear them running very fast down the stairway. I am so glad I had bought this for our trip or we may have had an unwanted stranger in our room. I highly recommend this alarm! GE 50246 Smart Home Door Stop Alarm

Even though I keep a gun next to my bed, it really bothered me that if someone managed to get into my house, I probably wouldn't wake up in time to get to it. (I'm a VERY deep sleeper and my bedroom's on the 2nd floor)

I'm so glad I decided to order this!

It's VERY loud and the 4 I ordered work on all my doors leading outside.

I even found a way to use this on my sliding glass door. By propping it gently against the sliding part of the door, and then putting something heavy behind it, to hold it in place, the alarm will go off if the door's opened.

Like the other reviewer said, I love that it's portable, so I can bring it with me to hotels and stuff.

Anyways, between how well it works, the simplicity of using it and the very reasonable price. I very highly recommend this!

Looking for an easy to use, reliable door entry alarm with no complicated mounting? Get the GE SmartHome Door Stop Alarm. You won't be disappointed. Afer batteries are activated, you're done. Just put by your door. So sensitive to pressure that I've often scared myself by picking it up the wrong way. (Pick it up by the sides only) Easy to take with you on trips and a perfect complement to the Door Jammer. Highly recommend.

I travel for work, so having this door stop allows me a sense of security that otherwise I would not have. The alarm is very annoying so hopefully, in the event it was triggered, it would be enough to awaken even fairly deep sleepers.

My own issue with the unit is that you need a screwdriver to insert and remove the battery. I remove the battery when I travel so that there is no way for the on off switch to be activated by accident en route.

Otherwise, good value and small enough to pack and take each trip.

This product will not disappoint you. 120 decibels is no joke. Fire/Police sirens are approx. 120 decibels. Gunshot approx. 140. Most sound charts start the pain threshold at 125. Excellent product and a cheap/simple security measure. Understand this is just an added level of security (like a tall fence, door lock), not an all-encompassing security solution. I'm not worried about amateur/undetermined intruders now. However, now I'm worried about waking the dead... that might be problematic. They're always so angry.

This item seemed like a good idea. Perhaps we should have checked to see how much space was available under the door to my daughter's apartment before we bought it. The door is very tight, with no space underneath for this to fit. My husband plans on bringing it on business trips to use in a hotel. Just a heads up for anyone thinking of purchasing: see if there is any space beneath the door!

I purchased this to augment a home security system. While the door I am using this on is protected, the siren for the home alarm is towards the front while the door is at the back, and I basically wanted this for the siren. It is LOUD, which is obviously what you wound want, and seems sturdy, though I am not sure that if someone really pushed in on this it would survive the experience. Still, at less than $20 (far cheaper than an additional siren for the home alarm) it is well worth it.

This guy is super easy to set up and very loud. I don't find it to be over-sensitive, so you can move it about without setting it off. Once you do tap the metal sensor, however, a big, high-pitched screech is released.

I bought this because my door alarm has a 30-second delay so I wanted a back-up alarm that sounds immediately when I'm in my apartment. It works as intended and I'm happy with the product and the price.

I docked a star because this thing slides a bit on wood floors. If someone opened the door, it would still go off, but I think if someone flung the door open, it would set the alarm off initially and then the unit would slide away. I haven't been able to test this theory, but I'm pretty sure it won't work as a door-stop for this reason. - Security - Loud - Alarm - Home Security'

Chin Up Bar - fitness, exercise bands

I have had really bad luck with bands on Amazon.com and will be going to a store to get high end bands after this. I have no idea how these bands can have such positive reviews. These bands arrived and I immediately knew there was going to be a problem. The rubber latex smell was so strong, its like they were made from fresh tires. Putting my initial misgivings aside, I began my workout with them. The cheap metal clip on the heaviest band broke after a few repetitions of a standing tricep curl. Also, the heaviest band was not particularly heavy. No more online value bands for me. Stay away, whatever you do! NEW 5 Resistance Bands SET for Yoga, ABS & Gym Workout

Item completely as described and shipping extraordinarily fast. It performed exactly as stated and fit the bill for what I needed it for. One drawback is the strenth of the bands not as strong as I thought but you can double them up so it is workable. Great item for price and what is included.

it is really simple and easy to use. it works like bowflex and fraction of the price:) it is very light and you can carry with you anywhere to park to your office etc..

it is great for stretching and resistance training.

love it

quickest delivery I have ever received. Good quality product. Hand grips are very comfortable. Nice that each band has own hand grips, this is important if you are using them for a program such as P90x because you need to be able to switch bands quickly.

This is really a great product for people who doesn't have time to go to the gym or want an alternative to it.

The product comes with a bag, so you can carry it when on travel. Also comes with 2 handles, 2 ankle straps, a door clip and a book with set of exercises. Pros: portable, cand do exercises for all your body, you can use the book as a guide for specific exercises. It also comes with complete routines to loose weight and gain muscle. So far, looks very durable. Very high quality product. Cons: the clip system decreases the range of motion for some exercises, specially if you are short and are doing exercises that requires you to stand on the tube and bend over. Still, that's a minor issue since you can find equivalent exercises in the book. Conclusion: Overall, it's well designed and a great quality product. I use it when I don't have time to go to the gym or when I'm travelling. I really recommend it.

This set of workout bands is pretty good. I just got them today and started doing p90x with them. Feels quite sturdy. Come with foam handles, door anchor and ankle straps too. Bang for the buck! I would suggest to go for these instead of the more expensive b-lines. Looks pretty much the same to me. And this one has many more resistance levels too. Plus you can add up multiple bands to get even more kick!

Was looking for exercise bands to use with P90X rather than buying a complete dumbbell set. I'm very happy with this product. I don't seem to use the yellow and blue bands at all since they don't provide very much resistance. The other bands get used and work well. I like the fact that the bands have clips for the handles. I bought an extra set of handles to avoid having to swap out frequently between exercises. As it turns out, a lot of times when I'm working a smaller muscle group with a single band, I won't even use the handle -- I'll just grab the end of the band near the attachment. I also really like the fact that it's easy to combine the bands to increase the weight. I haven't used the ankle strap and I'm not sure if I ever will. I have used the door attachment and it works well when used as instructed. I think I'll attach a carabiner to the closed nylon loop on the door attachment which will make it even easier to use.

Firstly, the bands came the very next day as opposed to the set week long delivery schedule. The bands are awesome and came with everything mentioned (5 bands, 2 ankle straps, 2 handles and door anchor) so you're set up and good to go. Wouldn't say they are the greatest bands ever but they pretty good and cheaper than most on the market. The booklet is almost useless but you can find workouts and uses for the bands all over the internet anyway. Best of all its AWESOME for p90x exercises, i've been doing them 2weeks now with no problems. Great product, 5 stars. - Exercise - Exercise Bands - Fitness - Chin Up Bar'

Science Fiction - science fiction, sci-fi action

You can't go into this with high expectations. It's a Vin Diesel, cyberpunk action flick. It's got action, a decent plot, straightforward characters, and a bit of substance, especially at the end. You want art, angst, or profound nihilism, look elsewhere. Loosen up, rent it, sit back and enjoy your popcorn. It's worth the price of admission. Babylon A.D. (Uncut)

This film keeps wanting to be Riddick, or Pitch Black, or Thunderdome, and even has themes out of Resident Evil and the Fifth Element --it borrows bits from a lot of cool sci-fi movies of the last twenty years, but it doesn't quite click. There are some interesting action scenes, like flying missile drones chasing snowmobiles, but it seems to swing from expensive FX scenes, to grim, urban, post apocalypse scenes, which would be fine, except there are no zombies. If you're going to have monochrome gray post-apocalypse scenes you need zombies, unless you're doing a Eastern European love story, in which case, you need zombies shagging. The whole thing could have been shot in black and white and you'd have never noticed the difference.

The upside is that you do get to see Vin Diesel growl at people and blow stuff up, which I think we've all missed. - Science Fiction - Sci-fi Action'

Autism And Child Development - sensory processing disorder, early intervention

This book is a great resource for professionals who work with you children identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Sensory Processing Disorder. The author describes her orientation to working with children without focusing on the "disorders". I read the book as a former children's developmental intervention program coordinator and social worker. Ms. Sher's approach shares social work values of a strengths perspective and person-in-environment approach. She looks at the children's strengths and interests and engages children in their peer environment.

I re-read the book from the point of view of a former pre-school teacher, parent and current grandparent. I have highlighted activities for purposeful fun and skill development with my two developmentally normal preschool-aged grandchildren.

The first two chapters should be required reading for any professionals who work young children with an exceptionality diagnosis. Also, parents of a diagnosed child would find comfort and good philosophical modeling by identifying with the author's understanding and insights into the child's perceptual world. Early Intervention Games: Fun, Joyful Ways to Develop Social and Motor Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum or Sensory Processing Disorders

This book covers both ASDs and Sensory Disorders, with a good section explaining how these affect children, which can be very helpful in demystifying the behaviors of children with these issues (especially important for parents like myself, who are new to this subject, with kids who are newly diagnosed or just getting diagnosed!); and this section is followed by a wealth of suggestions for activities to help kids who are affected by these issues reach their potential -- not only in overcoming these specific issues, but also in gaining social skills.

Included with the activities are suggestions for ways to modify them for single children or groups, or for children with specific preferences or quirks; and reading through this book will no doubt serve to inspire ideas for many other activities or modifications as well.

I would also like to note that, in my opinion, the title of this book does not do it justice, because "Early Intervention" implies (to me, at least) that the activities here are only for children under the age of 3-4; which is definitely not the case. Using the ideas presented here in group situations, many of these activities could continue to be enjoyable for several years beyond that age range, as a means of helping kids (particularly those with ASDs) gain or improve turn-taking, sharing and other social skills.

It is my opinion that parents, caregivers, therapists and educators can ALL benefit from this book, whether they are new to this area of study, or have years of experience; and it would be a valuable addition to any of their bookshelves, one that is sure to remain handy for years to come.

The beginning of this book provides a wonderful overview of sensory intergration issues--one of the better ones I have read. However, there's a lot of emphasis on aquatic therapy in this book, which I wasn't expecting, and for me, detracted from the overall usefulness of this text. Note, there are many great and fun activities--the book simply wasn't what I was expecting.

Barbara has yet again come through with the goods. This new book is easy to read and full of fun ideas to help motivate children to want to learn. Already I have read the book cover to cover and am putting these ideas and games into practice. Motivation and maintaining motivation across the day with little ones can be hard, but thanks to this book and all these game ideas included in it - this job is a little easier! A must read for all working in this area! Thanks Barbara ;O)

Motivate to Communicate!: 300 Games and Activities for Your Child With Autism

Once again, Barbara Sher gifted us with a jam-packed collection of games for hours of purposeful fun, this time for children with social skills challenges. In this collection, each game is thoughtfully and lovingly designed to bring out the beautiful and often hidden side of our children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder).

Whether used at home, in the classroom, in the therapy clinic or at camp, these games offer adults wonderful ways to help these children overcome social obstacles and build confidence from a very early age.

Her book, "Early Intervention Games: Fun, Joyful Ways to Develop Social and Motor Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum or Sensory Processing Disorders" is an important resource for parents, teachers, Early Intervention Specialists and therapists alike.

It's no wonder Barbara Sher is The Games Lady [...]). She makes learning FUN...as it should be.

"Early Intervention Games: Fun, Joyful Ways to Develop Social and Motor Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum or Sensory Processing Disorders" is a WINNER.

Thank you for sharing your creativity and love of FUN with all of us.

[...].

We have just received an ASD diagnosis for my 2 year and 8 month old daughter. We dont have a lot of family close by and our neighbours and friends are not too familiar with Autism. This book is good with a lot of activities for children with ASD, SPD and even Neurotypical children. However, it has its limitations in that we dont always have a group of like minded or cooperative friends who would come over for such activities. So, my chicken and egg problem is this- I would like to do a lot of the socializing activities mentioned in the book (which usually has mostly group activities), but dont have access to groups of (of even 1 or 2 )children (or even adults) who would like to participate.

Loved the book- but its mostly geared for group situations- preferably with like aged children. It could work, if you have a neighbourhood weekly games group maybe. - Special Education - Occupational Therapy - Sensory Processing Disorder - Early Intervention'

Exercise - fitness, step

I ordered this package. First I want to say that the shipping was FAST! I got it the day after it shipped! I think it's a great value for everything you get! My one word of advice would be to order a beginner's step video to go with it if you're new to step aerobics. The DVD that comes with the package is good, but it's an intermediate level video and it's TOUGH! Other than that, this is a great product. The Step F1090 Step Body Fusion

I do step at a gym and their step is a little longer than the one you get with this. But this is a really great deal for all that you get. I was wondering if anyone knew where you can buy more risers? That would be my only complaint is that they don't have any instruction sheet or any other info in with it.

such a good deal. the stepper alone is a steal considering every other place a stepper alone is around fifty dollars. this kit comes with everything you need for an awesome workout. i have had it only about a week and i already can see a difference. i recommend it to anyone that wants a good deal and a fun way to lose weight!

I think that this is a great little kit for the cost. I just got it in today and loved everything in the package. I think it's just about everything a person with limited space and a limited budget (like me) might need to start a fitness routine. I agree that it should have come with a sheet of instructions on blowing up the ball like others have said, but it only took a few minutes to figure out. All you have to do is pull out the white plug in the ball and follow the pump instructions (the plastic wrapper around the pump) to blow it up. It's a minor workout just blowing up the ball, a great way to start shedding those pounds!

The step is a little flimsy, but it gets the job done. The fitness ball is made of sturdy material, but there were no instructions for inflation, we had to ask someone who already had one how to get it inflated. Other than that, no real complaints.

I wanted to get a little more in shape and decided to order this set because it is just such an amazing deal. I was concerned that it was maybe too good a deal, and that the step would be flimsy or something, but its not. The step is not the absolute highest quality I have ever seen, but it worked well enough for my purposes of just doing the video every few days. When I was using it I weighed just over 210lbs and the step or the ball had no problems with my weight. I found that the step video was very hard to keep up with. I took a step aerobics class a few years ago and loved it, but I am still a beginner. This video may be for beginners, I'm not sure, but it is not a learning video by any means. Once it starts, she is going, no pausing and very little teaching. I guess this is good for someone who can keep up, but I was lost most of the time. I enjoyed the other parts of the video using the other equipment, those parts are definitely fine for beginners. Overall this is a good quality set of exercise equipment, but the video is lacking. I was bored of the video within a couple weeks and stopped using it, started running instead.

I recently finished up a 12 week workout with a personal trainer. I wanted something to use so I could continue a good workout at home. This works perfectly. There is a video that comes with it and targets each muscle group. With the video, I do upper body, lower body, and abs during the week. It's great and I can definitely feel the burn!!

I received exactly what I ordered and sooner than was predicted. A great basic step, weight, ball and tube set. I use this at home, and keep another set at the office for my workouts there. Actually, this set was cheaper than buying comparable products separately. Highly recommend!

The exercise ball is a good deal, the step it pretty sturdy and the weights are what you would expect.

My largest complaint would be the air pump for the ball. It did split open along the seam when I was pumping the ball up for the first time.

As far as the video goes, it moves pretty quickly so anyone who is just learning the moves for the step will feel overwhelmed the first few times they try it. I would suggest hunting down beginner videos on the internet and hold off on the DVD until you feel like you are fairly comfortable (and coordinated) using the step. - Step - Fitness'

Disaster Preparedness - disaster preparedness, survival kit

In the description it made it sound like I was going to get a case of these emergency food bars. I only received one package with 18 bars in it (not individually wrapped). This vendor is way overpriced on this compared to others. I should have searched more because there are others selling at half the price. This might be a decent product but for something that seems so simple, I think the price should be closer to five bucks.

This stuff is kinda tasty, stays fresh for a long time, and packs small.

I suggest it for any survival kit where space is limited but still available. In other words, get cheaper bulkier stuff for your home. (Mountain House Hardtack is good there, along with some peanut butter and canned goods). This is for your car, boat, plane, or office. It's standard issue in many lifeboats. It does not require cooking and is moist enough so that it's not thirst provoking.

*WARNING!* Contains coconut, and not just a trace. Do NOT buy or consume if you have coconut allergies! I had a friend break out in hives just for being in the same room!

Once you open the vacuum sealed wrapper you have to consume all the bars within that package. The label states the bars will last up to one month after opening, however, if your emergency only lasted one day you will waste the rest of the bars. Good for 3 day emergency kits since they last un-opened for 5 years.

I'll start with a bit of perspective. This is a survival item. And as such must be portable, durable, does what it's design to do....in this case, keep you from starving to death. For that it does a good job.

With that said, the flavor is good....like a shortbread cookie. Texture seems dry (crumbles easily) but don't confuse that thirst provoking, it does not. I ate 2 portions without a drop of water. The downside of the crumbliness is that it's possibly messy until you get the hang of it. Watch out for crumbs. You don't want to attract animals, insects, zombies, whatever. The individual plastic wrapped 200 calorie portions is a welcomed feature. The upside is minimal chewing. In a survival situation, not having to chew is a plus....trust me.

The high caloric content per pack is good. But compare to other emergency bars it doesn't have as much needed vitamins and minerals. Then again, you're not suppose to live off them, just stay alive long enough to make it back to a real meal.

Just got an order in from The Ready Store, not sure if they are an Amazon merchant or not at this point but what ever, they're a great outfit and so is Amazon.

Let me clarify a previous post, as of the 5/10 batch, my biscuits were individually wrapped.

First off, a case of 20 shipped at 31 pounds. Plan accordingly, this was meant for my bug-out bags and separated in 2 bags the weight isn't too bad. In one bag it would have been way too much weight. But hey, the longer the event, the lighter your bags will get right?

At 3600 calories per "cube" with 18 biscuits in each, this will very easily get 2 people through 24 hours. If you are expending a lot of energy, less. If you are sitting on your butt, more.

The taste is acceptable, in the sense that they are pretty good, think coconut macaroon...But not so good that you'll want to wolf down 5 or 6 at a time. That is taking into consideration that I wasn't exactly starving when I tried them. I'm sure that would change depending on the circumstances. So that should give you an idea of what to expect. At 200 calories a pop, I don't think I want to polish off this bag too quickly.

This is last resort, when the defecation hits the oscillation, type rations and pack really good. We are essentially carrying near 30 days of "food" for 2 (after you add vitamins to your bags). I would prefer something a little more "exciting" and may see if I can squeeze in a few MREs into each bag to change things up. But as a very basic *on the go* food source, this fits the bill.

DATREX 3600 EMERGENCY FOOD

My emergency kit contains a package of Datrex 3600 Emergency Food. What does it give me?

3600 calories in 18 individually-wrapped portions

weight 24 ounces (measured on a food scale)

dimensions: 2.5" by 3.5" by 4.25"

shelf life of 60 months

little nutrition other than providing fat, simple and complex carbohydrates

Ingredients (food allergy notice!) wheat flour, vegetable shortening, cane sugar, water, coconut and salt

A dietitian would be obligated to lecture you on how bad this supply of emergency calories is for you--but this old-school "iron ration" can keep your starving body from metabolizing your internal organs and your muscle tissue in an emergency. I think it tastes like a gritty shortbread cookie with the coconut taste evident, but then I have no issues with eating the military Meal, Ready to Eat (MRE) individual field rations either. Think "The Empire Strikes Back," Episode V of Star Wars, the scene where Luke meets Yoda: Yoda's comment on Luke's emergency ration was appropriate. Don't expect a five-star restaurant meal! These bars are high-carb, high-fat and low-protein. For lifeboat use low protein is good--protein raises your water needs even more than fat does for digestion.

I purchased my Datrex 3600 Emergency Food in April 2011 and the package was marked with a manufacturing date of March 2011 and an expiration date of March 2016. I needed a reserve food source for my emergency kit that was low maintenance--something I could pack in my kit and not worry about for a while. I purchased two packages--one for my kit, and one for testing. The test package will be used on the job--sometimes I don't have time for a lunch break and my work days with commute are nearly 14 hours long.

The wrapper is a mini survival manual, giving old-school advice on conserving drinking water. That advice is situational--if you are in a life boat on the ocean, conserving drinking water can extend the amount of time you'll survive dehydration. The instructions recommend one 200-calories bar every six hours for lifeboat use or one bar every four hours for "emergencies on land." The nutrition information on the package is useful in planning a survival kit--basically, these Datrex survival bars are empty calories. Even though high-carb, high-fat and low-protein mean that you don't need as much water as when you eat high protein meals, if you don't have water it is a bad idea to eat. For hard corps emergencies, empty calories are not a bad thing--they keep your body from eating your heart out under starvation conditions. As I said, I plan that these survival bars are a back-up food supply. I'll have other survival foods and vitamin supplements that don't have the shelf life, the low maintenence feature of the Datrex bar.

I think outside the box. The 18 bars in my Datrex pack were individually wrapped. I wonder if they'd make acceptable fuel? I will have to test that out--learn burn time and how long it will take to get a pint of water to boil. I may need to purify a pint of water more than I need 200 calories. If opened carefully, the foil-lined package will work as a boiling vessel, holding about a pint of water. - Emergency Food - Emergency Kit - Survival Kit - Disaster Preparedness'
