Hand Weights

I ordered these one pound weights for my daughter who likes to do workout videos with me. I was surprised to find that the two 1-lb. weights that I ordered are not identical. Not only are they two different pinks, but one is noticeably larger than the other. I guess it really doesn't matter since we are just using them for home, but I have to admit that I am disappointed with the quality control. Cap Barbell Neoprene Dumbbell (Pink, 1-Pound)

I love these dumbbells! Some of my exercise videos call for one pounders, and I had a hard time finding any that small at the stores. These work great! They are easy to hold on to and don't slip, and I love the pink color!

Stupid me thought that since people buy dumbbells in set of TWO, the merchants will sell the dumbbells will sell it by TWO. The dumbbell and not dumbbellS in the title should have given me the clue... Should have seen my face when I opened the package and only one came out of it!!!! The dumbbell itself is ok. How can you give 5 stars on a dumbbell? I LOVE the color and non-sticky non-slippery surface. I'm going to order one MORE to make it a set of two. :)

It was NOT clear that this was sold individually. I was in a hurry to complete my order, and did not realize that this was not sold as a pair/set. I would have never intentionally bought ONE 1-lb. weight. After making the selection, there should have been some sort of clarification, "Did you intend to purchase one dumbell? This item is NOT sold as a pair."'

Patrick Swayze - action, adventure

"London" reunites almost the entire cast of "Cellular" (Chris Evans, Jessica Biel, and Jason Statham) as well as Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers) and Kelli Garner (Thumbsucker) for this underappreciated and, in my opinion, very well done movie. The movie got terrible reviews and was even called "boring" by Richard Roeper. When a film critic calls a movie boring, you know there's something up. I knew I would like this movie, but I saw myself giving it a B- or even a C. Oddly enough, I loved this movie. The movie stars Evans as Syd. Syd is a cokehead who is suffering from the breakup of his girlfriend of two years, London (Biel). They've been broken up for a little over 6 months and Syd has become a sort of empty shell; He frequently dreams about her and such. Then, Syd recieves a phone call and finds out that London is having a going away party...Apparently, she's moving to L.A. to live with her new boyfriend. Shocked by the news, Syd meets up with a guy named Bateman (Statham) who sells him some blow and Syd insists that Bateman tag along with him to the party. When they arrive, Syd and Bateman head up to the bathroom and talk about their problems, God, and love. This is pretty much what 3/4 of the movie is. The other 1/4 of it is the flashbacks Syd has about London and when he finally confronts her at the party. The biggest complaint from critics was the bathroom scene...It was too long and the conversations were dull. Well, if you're going to see it and don't know about the long bathroom sequences...Yes, maybe they are long and dull. If you're going to see and know about these scenes, however, they might not be as bad. I found the scenes to fit perfectly in the movie. The dialogue in the film is really good and has an improvised feel to it. Statham and Evans are great and really get to show off their acting skills. Even Biel is good as London. The end of the movie isn't necessarily what you hope for, but it's realistic and in that sense is perfect. I'm not guaranteeing everyone will like this movie, most people will agree with Ebert & Roeper. I'm not using this review to convince anyone, but am merely sharing my opinions. Hope you like it.

GRADE: A-

NOTE TO JESSICA BIEL FANS:

There is sex scenes in the film, but as far as showing Jessica Biel naked; The director teases you. The camera will move upward right as she gets out of bed or the place she's standing will be darkened. So, if you're renting this movie for the sole reason of catching a glimpse of a nude-Jessica Biel. This movie is definitley not for you. London

I enjoyed the hell out of this movie. It was about a guy who was in a relationship with a girl for 2 years and then gets dumped and can't move on. Then she ends up getting ready to move in with her new beau 6 months later, and the entire movie consists of flashbacks of the good and bad of their relationship. It also has some excellent supporting characters with some interesting stories. My favorite is the main character's dealer, who is mentally scarred over losing his wife because of things that are beyond his control.

The movie makes you walk away with several things to think about. First of all, you're not the only one who knows pain, everyone has their own story and your personal hell is no more painful than the next guy's. Secondly, it shows you that whatever you're going through, chances are you're not going through it alone. Sometimes you have to reach out to that other person so that they can hear you say I need you. Or, I love you. And the most important lesson of all is that Life will move on with or without you, and sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to just let go.

I loved this movie. I loved everything about it. Watch it. You will too.

Hunter Richards makes his writing and directing debut with this quirky, odd, strenuous, frustrating, noisy...but pretty polished little low budget movie LONDON. While this film will not garner a big audience, for those who see it there will be keen anticipation of Richards next outing.

London (Jessica Biel, a beautiful and talented screen presence) is a frustrated lover of Syd (Chris Evans, likewise a hunky and very fine actor): Syd is strung out on coke and though passionate as a lover he is unable to verbalize 'I love you' to fill London's needs for intimacy. All of this information we receive trough flashbacks and dream sequences as the film takes place in one day - the day London is leaving after a farewell party in her honor. Syd is self-destructive as well as actively aggressive, and while not invited to London's party, he crashes it with his dealer Bateman (Jason Statham, who sports hair here and an even more impressive acting outing). The crux of the story takes place in an extended bathroom conversation during which time both men do lines of coke and swigs of tequila and compare notes: Syd bemoans his loss of London and his regrets while Bateman violently compares his loss of potency to be a far greater problem. All manner of topics arise, not the least of which is Syd's atheism and his lack of belief in just about everything. His sole reason for attending London's party is to win back her love, but coke and the shallowness of Syd's character prevent that.

Interesting situation, here: Evans, Biel, and Statham all give fine performances but their characters engender absolutely no empathy from the viewer. Perhaps this is Hunter Richards' concept: drugs destroy the minds of otherwise very strong people, that temporary highs prevent appreciation of the immediate matrix that can grow into something lasting and valuable. Yes, the script is preachy and full of gross dialogue, but the underpinnings of good filmmaking are evident enough to make us aware that Hunter Richards has talent. And it is always a pleasure to see actors heretofore accepted as eye candy prove they can take on beefy tough roles that stretch their acting abilities. Homeschooling - freedom, high school

I just finished reading "Homeschooling the Teen Years." I've highlighted over half of the book, and now I'm reading through it for the second time. I'm checking out all of the web links listed etc. Thank you so very much for writing this terrific book. I am new to the homeschooling scene and would have been quite lost without it. You have pointed me in the right direction. Two weeks ago I pulled my 12 year old, seventh grade student from public school on basically what was a spur of the moment, desperation move. Long story short, he has been on Ritalin for 4 years, has never enjoyed even one day of school (including kindergarten), had a 504 plan for passive A.D.D and writing/processing problems. I was tired of trying to get the teachers to cooperate, my son to do his homework after school, tears, low self-esteem and failing grades. I just knew there had to be a better way to help my son receive the education he deserves. In just two short weeks, my son's behavior and personality are undergoing major changes. He is happier, less stressed, and for the first time -- willing to sit down and learn without the fear of failure. The greatest part of all is that he's no longer taking the Ritalin. I threw that away the day I pulled him from public school. Guess what? He's fine without it. I feel in my heart that this was the best decision I have ever made for my son. I was scared, doubting myself and wondering why in the world did I think I could do this. Now I know I can do this, and do it better then the schools. Thank you for being there for me when I needed you most. Your book has become my inspiration and will continue to guide me through the high school years. Thank you, Cafie Cohen, from the bottom of my heart! Homeschooling: The Teen Years: Your Complete Guide to Successfully Homeschooling the 13- to 18- Year-Old (Prima Home Learning Library)

I have been homeschooling for 11 years now and I must say this has been one of the most useful publications I have come across. I have already struggled through two teens with little help and not knowing where to turn for resources. There is a great deal of information for the younger years, but very little for teens. This book not only give you insightful information to make your teens education well rounded and interesting, but it also provides a wealth resources to turn for further information. No homeschool should be without it.

This is a great book for anyone homeschooling teenagers. In a wonderful, easy-to-read format, it discusses concerns of every family member -- mom and dad and teens and younger children. The author answers questions that new homeschoolers have, such as "How do we get legal?" and "Where do we find curriculum?" and "What about a diploma?" In addition the book contains a wealth of information for experienced home educators. Drawing not only on the author's years homeschooling her own children, but also on the experience of dozens of homeschooling families worldwide, this title contains an incredible number of fun, creative, practical, and money-saving suggestions for all subjects -- writing, foreign languages, advanced math, history, science, and so on. Based on a survey results compiled by the author, you will find lists throughout of homeschoolers' favorites -- from software to historical videos to authors teens love. One chapter discusses part-time homeschooling and afterschooling, that is, using homeschooling resources and approaches with schooled children. This is perfect for those families who want to use tried-and-true homeschooling resources to improve their child's math abilities or to enrich their teen's school history curriculum. Afterschooling offers ways to try homeschooling without jumping in full-time. Above all, the book emphasizes that there is no one right way to succeed. Instead it details many paths to success -- traditional approaches, unit studies, interest-initiated learning, and eclectic approaches -- and invites you to select those options that best fit your family.

This is Just what I have been needing. Especially the chapters on "The Joy of Learning with Teens" and "Learning Assets of the Teen Years". I've needed this wake-up call to focus on the positives of the teen years instead of the negatives. This is the best homeschool book I've read in years! Cafi manages to give a broad picture, explaning the many different routes homeschoolers take, while giving you baby steps of how to get moving in positive directions, find great curriculum, and money saving tips. She addresses the specifics of the 3R's and the Extras, addresses tailoring your school to your family's needs, keeping records and much more. I loved the fact that she writes with a national perspective. These are not just her ideas, but come from a large pool of home educators across the continent. The book is packed with resources, not an indiscriminating barage, but only the best.

I got my copy of Homeschooling, The Teen Years and read it through immediately. It was such an encouragement. Although we have been homeschooling for more than five years, sometimes I get cold feet and fear that we are not doing enough. Cafi's book points out the many ways we educate our kids every day and gives suggestions for new things to try. I highly recommend this book to people who are considering homeschooling their teens, and especially to those who are already doing it!

This book was easy to read and divided into segments that allowed for user-friendly access. I have referred to it numerous times since I received it and would recommend it to those homeschool parents facing the teen years. The best part of the book was the resources at the end of each section. It helped me see what parts in our curriculum needed improvement and which parts were right on target. - Freedom - Homeschool - High School - Kidbooks'

Fitness Dvd - fitness, fitness dvd

I really like this workout. In my 20's I used step aerobics to lose some weight and had the legs of my life. Fast forward 15 years later . . . I got away from workingout and I have gained weight. I bought this DVD because I hoped that it would ease me back into working out.

I first did the DVD yesterday. I thought the DVD was going to be below my fitness level. I walk every day and use the elliptical. I can't say that I push myself hard--I just do it and try to enjoy it. I also rotate in a Firm DVD. So, I thought I was in good shape--decent at least. So, I started the DVD and was exaggerating the moves intending on getting a good workout. I assumed this DVD was a little below my level. Well, I was wrong. A couple of times I had to march in place to catch my breath. I insisted that I was going to use my arms and that I was in good shape. Clearly, I am not--I about killed myself and should have dropped the arms at some point but refused. After the workout I felt exhausted--not in a good way--in a I am not going to do anything a while way.

Today I did the DVD without raising my arms above my head and got a good workout. I love the DVD. It is simple and straightforward. Exactly what I was looking for. I would have liked a more thorough stretch but I just do my own after the DVD. I like Debra. Again, she is straightforward. I do not like the Denise Austin type of rah rah DVD's--the first couple of times that rah rah is ok but after doing the DVD over and over again it is way too much and annoying.

With Debra, she just tells us what the next steps are, counts, etc. Nothing over the top just a good solid workout. Also, the people on her "team" or regular people. They aren't the perfectly toned size zero's that we see so often in other DVD's. I use to think that the perfectly toned people in other DVD's were inspiring but I found that these women inspired me more. I would want to take a break and march but I wouldn't let myself . . . I would say "Ok, Gina, if they can do it you have to be able to do it--toughen up--quit whining".

I think this is an intermediate DVD. I have the firm DVD's and feel that this got me sweating more and working harder. If it is too hard you can drop your arms like I did or use a shorter step. If you are not getting enough of a workout you can use a higher step.

There is a toning segment after the workout that I haven't done yet. It seems to be about 10 minutes. I watched it and forgot to time it. Just solid basic moves. If you are new to stepping there is an intro that will show you all of the moves and help you ease into stepping. Stepping is a great way to shape and tone your lower body. Stepping also gives you a more intense workout. I am looking forward to reshaping my body again and think this is just the ticket.

The workout is just under 40 minutes with a 4 minute warm up and a 3 minute cool down. The music isn't overwhelming--just right. I wish Debra would make more step DVD's to integrate with this one!

Gina Shapely Girl: Let's Get Stepping with Debra Mazda - Beginner Step Cardio Workout

What a great step workout! The choreography is deceptively simple, but really gets your heartrate up - easy footwork makes it a breeze to follow. Debra adds some fun arm/leg combos - and her cuing is excellent. The four women stepping with her show various easy/hard modifications (for example, lowest step height, no arms, highest step height, etc.). I've been stepping a while, and I found it very easy to add challenge by just exaggerating the movements or adding some plyo (leaping) where needed. A short but very effective toning section at the end is also excellent. I recommend this DVD very highly!

WOW! It is about time that someone made fitness for ALL women! I am so impressed and so moved to see Curvy and Shapely women working out and getting both fit and healthy! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how Debra emphasizes that Fitness and Health comes in all shapes and sizes! This woman not only talks the talk but walks the walk! I am so glad that us average sized (size 12 & 14) as well as Plus-Sized women have safe, effective, and motivating fitness DVDs that are quality and fun to use! It is a horrible myth that one cannot be healthy or fit if you are "over weight" or "over sized". Definitely not true!

This DVD offers basic choreography at a moderate pace. There are several modifications shown whether it be different step heights or no arm movements. I have only done Cathe Friedrich step in the past from both her beginner thru advanced titles and have to say that Cathe has now taken a backseat to Debra with regards to Step. No this is not as intense as Cathe, but that's the point! It's non-itimidating, motivating, and fairly easy on the joints; unlike Cathe. I have knee issues as well as joint problems with 1 hip and at age 27, I can't afford to beat my body up for the sheer purpose of vanity, in hopes of being "smaller one day". Healthy and fit are so much more important than size and that message is really hammered home with Debra. We don't have to suffer along in boring or long workouts with Cathe, Amy Bento, Jillian, ect to look and feel great! Fitness can be fun and now IS! There's a revolution going on within the fitness and health industry and Debra is helping to lead the way! I am so proud of myself and my size, it's about time that someone indulges us "Shapely Girls" with appropriate, beneficial, fun, safe, and effective fitness! I own all 4 Shapely Workouts and look forward to Debra releasing more! Get this DVD, it is well worth the money! The movements are non-complicated, easy on the body, the music is fab, and EVERY women big or small can do it! Fitness no longer has to kill you to be effective, Thank God and Thank you Debra!

I also want to add that she uses Top 40 music and no two songs are repeated amongst her 4 DVDs. If you are an Advanced Exreciser you would find this workout great for a light to mderate workout, something to compensate for more demanding cardio routines like Cathe Friedrich or Amy Bento. If you are a faithful Leslie Sansone fan, tis one is more intense than any Leslie DVD IMHO, including her 5 Mile Walks. You can get a moderate, yet energizing workout with no risers, but add 1-2 sets of risers and be prepared for a step sweatfest! I personally am so tired of Leslie's same boring workouts, with the same boring movements, with little to no "umph". Debra's DVDs are amazing and I recommend this and the other 3 whole-heartedly to anyone! I love her and her workouts. I am praying that Debra releases another Step workout!! - Fitness Dvd - Fitness - Step Aerobics - Aerobics'

Childrens Life Jacket

I love the Puddle Jumpers Floation for my 18 month old son!!!!!!! It keeps him a float, his head stays above water. It aslo helps with him learning how to swim. The only 1 problem, is that if he happens to turn on his back, he can not get himself back over, but I sure that will be resolved once he learns how to get around more in the water, right now he is only 18 months. I definetly give it 5 stars. I absolutley LOVE< LOVE< LOVE it!!! One of the safest products for kids learning to swim. Makes him very independent in the water. Stearns Boys Puddle Jumper Flotation Suit,Alligator, 30-40 Pounds

I'm sure this product would be okay for a larger toddler (3-4 years old) but my 2.5 year old was 'swimming' in it!

I didn't see any information about it fitting 30-40lbs, our girl is only 25lbs. maybe I missed something.

I purchased the 'non-suit' flotation instead (chest and arms only) and it's PERFECT.

Plus, a friend told me that the full suits tend to ride up and iritate her child's chin. Just an fyi!

My two year old daughter and I LOVE this swimming suite. It is easy for Mama to hold her in deep water, she is so buoyant and happy. I feel so secure knowing that there is no way she will sink since she does not know how to swim yet. We only have to worry about her dipping her face in the water!! A great suite to own with a toddler who hasn't taken swimming lessons yet.

Bought this for my very independent 19 month old who loves getting in the water. It took her about 2 visits to the pool to get the hang of the suit (at first she would float on her back, then on her stomach),...but now she can swim all around the pool. The quality is excellent, the suit fits big on her (she wears 24 month clothes) but it does not ride up in the water. She can use this for a long time. Very cute design and good quality. Would definitely recommend.

Bought this for my 18mth old after reading other reviews that people had put thier younger ones in it ..... dont know how it was huge on my daughter!! She is not small by any means (90% height) and the crotch was at her knees and she looked like the michelin tire woman. When she sat she basically ate the front floatie and same when she swam.

We stuck it on my 2.5yr old son (haha) and it was still waaay tooo long on him!!! But the idea is great.

Personally I got 2 of the puddle jumper basic life jackets and they are better!!!! Wish I could return this one.

I got the small for my 30lb 3 yr old. She will be able to wear it the entire Summer. ( a little big, but does not hinder its effectiveness) It took her a while to figure out this was going to keep her aflot. But loved it and was effective after that! Happy customer here.

This suit is fantastic I imported it from the states hoping it would fit my large 1yr old girl. IT DOSEN'T very large. It fits my 2 1/2 month old daughter perfectly she is quite tall and of average build now (was chunky as a baby) It will probally fit her for a few years as has adjustment ties on either side by the legs. I took her swimming today and she loves it. I purchased it as I will be off to spain soon, I will be able to relax knowing she will be wearing it. IF ANY ONE KNOWS WHERE TO GET A SIZE SMALLER PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

My 19-month old daughter swam like a fish in this suit... I purchased one to take on vacation with us and I will buy a few more for the upcoming summer season!!!

She was able to keep afloat and move around, I do have to admit she had previously taken swim classes for six months before we went on vacation, I will keep up on the lessons but the suit is a must especially since we have a pool.'

Analog-digital Watch - water resistant, sport watch

got this watch on sale at sears for around 25$ i needed an alarm but hate the all digital watches and couldn't afford an all analog watch with alarm and chrono so i got this. casio makes way more analog/digital combo watches that any other maker. this watch is fantastic, large buttons, simple digital functions, you got the time on top then month, day and day of week on bottom. then alarm, stopwatch and a second timezone if you need that on bottom instead of the date..illuminator blue light lights up analog and digital display.. if i could change one thing i would give this watch a glass crystal because after a while you get scratches because its a plastic face. But all you need is to buff it with 'white paste style toothpaste' and it looks brand new again. Some people might have trouble reading the digital display, its not very big. Casio Men's AQ150W-1EV Ana-Digi Chronograph Sport Watch

This watch has performed flawlessly for a few years, all the while being subjected to rugged use in the pool, in the ocean, while running, etc. Watchband broke after about 1.5 years. Mine was truly waterproof for the pool and ocean (no diving). So comfortable I even forgot it was on when getting in shower. Digital readout not easy to read while running, which is inconvenient when you want to use stopwatch function.

As long as your expectations are not too high, you are likely to be happy with this watch. With my old failing eyesight, I wanted something that was easy to read in good and bad light. This fits the bill nicely. Keeps very good time and is pretty easy to set. But there is nothing fancy about it, which is what you should expect for $25. Cheap looking hands with no glow in the dark paint on a plain painted dial. No fancy patterns, relief or anything else. Black dail with gold hash marks.Day, date/timer is tiny, but readable with glasses. Backlight works well on main face and day date window. I wear in shower with no issues. Supposed to be safe for swimming and snorkeling. Band is comfortable. More flexible than past plastic bands. Hope that doesnt mean it falls apart sooner but it might. I looked for a long time for an inexpensive watch that had date that was easy to read and am very happy with this one.

Update Sept 2011: This watch is still going strong two years later. The band fell apart a few months ago but was easily replaced for a few bucks. Plastic "crystal" scratches easily but what do you expect for this price. The case has faded from black to dark gray but not a big issue. Overall, it has held up relatively well and the fact that it is still working makes it a buy in my book

I've had this watch for two weeks. Good looking watch, and only $20.95, but after wearing it while cleaning our patio with a hose, the inside fogged up. Condensation is ringing the crystal. I've had inexpensive running watches last for years, but once moisture gets inside, it's dead. During the two weeks it came in contact with high humidity perspiration, suncreen, water. I expect more from this type of watch.

I bought this watch three months ago specifically for hiking and backpacking, with its high water-reistant rating and rubber wrist band. It has been on two week-long trips, and developed visible moisture under the crystal each time. Exposure was nothing more than sweat or a minor splash from a stream. I would send it back, but its not worth paying shipping to get a partial refund. Very disappointing.

Casio has been pretty good with their reputation for their G-shock timepieces.

I wanted something different.

I'll be going to Navy bootcamp next month and they said that I couldn't wear a watch with the shiny bands. So i was desperately looking for a watch with a black wristband. But the inexpensive ones i've seen so far were full digital watches. Then I came across this watch. It was perfect. I wanted an inexpensive Analog watch with a digital display, Chronograph function, and hopefully a date function as an extra. This watch has it all. I just bought this watch 3 days ago and have been impressed by it. Simple, yet stylish, durable and tough for water activities, and even outdoor activities.

It has a simple Analog display on top then I put the digital time on the bottom because I wanted it in the 24 hour format so I could train myself reading military time. (e.g. 1pm - 1300, 2pm - 1400). This watch even has a chronograph that could help me time my run!

In general, this watch is very good for its price, which is just a fraction of a high-end wristwatch that almost has the same features elsewhere!

The band is really comfortable and soft and not irritating to my wrist at all. The watch itself is so light, it doesn't feel like I'm wearing it. The displays are all easy to read. the digital display though may be a little small but its just what you could expect for the price. I've recently swam with it, ran with it, and no problems so far. I'm surprised that the seawater didn't do any rust damage on the screws.

I would say this would be a good watch for any person with an active lifestyle, and it's even great for everyday wear.

This little watch has all the features of a watch costing two to three times what it costs.

It is easy to set the various features -- a stop watch, a timer, calendar, alarm and digital time. It was exactly what I wanted in a sport watch. The picture of the watch does not do it justice as I find the actual watch better looking. The only drawback is that the digital window is a little small which makes it hard to read the numbers. However, the backlight does a lot to improve legibility. In all, you can't go wrong with this watch considering the reasonable price.

The best recommendation I can make about this watch is that I have purchased three of them. I had one for five years and the battery just failed this week. I did not replace the battery because the watchband broke a couple of years ago and I was using this watch as a backup for its replacement, which was the same type of Casio watch. The second one was working fine, but I left it behind at the gym in a locker, and it disappeared. When I went looking for a replacement, I did spend some time browsing watches, but could not find one that fit my requirements: an analog face (I prefer this for my watches) with an alarm and a stopwatch. It does have a small digital display for the stopwatch, alarm, date, and a second time setting, which is fine. The watch itself has a ruggedly handsome appearance. Some might find the black display to be challenging to read, but it's fine for me. The watch is comfortable and lightweight. Some watches I tried at the store were heavy, which reinforced for me the comfortable feeling of this watch. - Fitness Watches - Water Resistant - Analog-digital Watch - Sport Watch'

Manual Pencil Sharpeners - pencil sharpener, manual pencil sharpeners

After having enough of battery-eating weak electric models, we decided to do it "old school." I have fond memories of those sturdy, satisfying wall-mounted manual pencil sharpeners from elementary school. This model would be decent if it were manufactured properly...(but isn't that true of sooooo many things?) Okay, here's my assessment: Either one of the steel receptacle centering fins was honed at an incorrect angle or one of the twin barrel cutters was set at the wrong angle, or both.

When you were in grade school did you ever place way too much downward angular pressure on your pencil as you were sharpening it? If you ever did, then you probably also remember returning to your desk and discovering half the "lead" still covered by the wood barrel of the pencil. Employing a writing instrument prepared in such a way is like scraping and scratching with a pointy stick, rather than the smooth unfettered flow of freshly revealed graphite. I swear, what happened to product testing or, for that matter, product quality?

Fast forward to present day: No, I did not place too much angular pressure on the barrel of my present-day pencil...the afore-described result was from gingerly CENTERING the pencil in the sharpener before turning the crank. (I think I got the "centering" thing down to a science after 12 years of daily manual pencil sharpening.) And, yes, I tried many, many pencils to make sure it wasn't just a poorly manufactured pencil. I wanted soooo badly for this product to work, but it just wasn't to be :-(

It's shocking. And yet, disturbingly, I *somehow* have gradually come to expect such disappointment from my purchases over the past couple of decades.

I would pay *4* times as much money for a 100% American-made quality product...if I could *find* a 100% American-made quality product. Come on America, let's get on (or in this case, off) the "stick" and get the "lead" out! X-Acto Model KS Table- or Wall-Mount Pencil Sharpener (1031)

A great sharpener, I have two girls in my house (ages 7 and 13) and they have broke nearly a dozen plastic and various electric models. This sharpener is very heavy duty and solidly built. I think it would stand up to a class room full of kids. I plan on buying one for my shop.

I've decided to replace this pencil sharpener because it has been destroying too many pencils. I have the same problem so many reviewers have had - namely it tends to sharpen only one side of the pencil when it doesn't chew right through them. In the end, I find myself having to remove the wood on the unsharpened side by hand, all too often breaking the lead in the process. We'd have -much- better luck with a cheap 50 cent sharpener, or a kitchen knife, or a machete...blender...

I thought this was going to be a good sharpener, but it doesnt matter what pencil I use, it just does not sharpen well at all. I'm about to pitch it in the trash. Only one side of the pencil sharpens while the wood remains on the other half, making it impossible to write with. It's junk.

As usual X-Acto has somehow managed to de-evolve the pencil sharpener. My first experience with X-Acto was with a simple electric sharpener. The quick convenience I had taken for granted with my Boston 19 was not possible with my new five-minute-per-pencil X-Acto. My next experience was with the $130 + "heavy duty" X-Acto in the department center in my school. Well before the end of the year it was simply an impressive looking paper weight. Finally, this rotary model was installed in my classroom. Basically, it ate every pencil at an impossible-to-write with angle. I tried out three others in neighboring classrooms. I did not have the same problem; rather, the others were worse: noisy, grinding pencil crushers that no student would use. My only option is to stock up on the small plastic manual sharpeners that frequently break but at least manage to sharpen a couple of pencils before they bite the dust. That's much more than I can say for my X-Actos.

Finding a pencil sharpener in my home was impossible. We have/had dozens of the small plastic hand held sharpeners come and go. Never to be found when I actually needed one. So I decided that mounting a hand-cranked sharpener to a fixed point would solve one of my life's many problems. I always welcome a quick easy way to eliminate a chronic hassle.

Anyway, I wanted the same model that I commonly found in my grammar school classrooms. My parents also had one mounted in their garage while I was a kid. Those things were built like Army tanks. Never seemed to wear out. Unfortunately, it appears the quality of that model, while still available, is now lacking in quality.

So after searching Amazon, it would seem this X-acto model is the best hand-cranked sharpener available. Easily mounts to any wooden surface with the included wood screws. Performs great. After I mounted it, I grabbed 10-12 new pencils and "got crankin". Each pencil was quickly sharpened to a perfect point. Quality seems solid with the all steel construction. No downsides could be found in this product. On top of being a well-regarded product, its also one of the cheaper models on the market.
