I've been searching for a product that can extend the outlet on my bathroom for the electrical products that I use. I finally came across this Belkin mini surge protector and features:

Simple, elegant design in a smooth plastic casing of white and light grey colour. Once plugged, the green LED light will indicate if the power source is grounded.



The box comes with one USB to mini-USB cable to get you started in charging your USB devices as well.



DO NOT throw the prong cover that initially comes attached to the surge protector prong. As the manual states (for those who still care to read the User Manual these days), you can use this plastic prong cover to help further balance the device against any surface. You do this by inserting the plastic prong cover on the bottom of the surge device via a small notch. Also, the plastic cover is handy to use when traveling. Before dumping the surge protector along with your other devices, cover the prongs to prevent it from scratching other objects.



The prongs can be rotated 360 degrees loosely. However, there are 4 positions that enable you to lock it so it doesn't flail along clumsily in any direction. You do this by pressing into the rear a "release button". It's not a raised button, but a flat plastic portion that you have to press hard in order to release the lock. It's quite difficult (at least with the model I received) at first and feels like I'm going to break the plastic button. But I guess if this is normal then it can be construed as a safety measure so it doesn't easily rotate with a simple touch.



IMPROVEMENTS:



The term "mini" is subjective. It isn't really that compact as I would assume from seeing the photo. It is small, yes. However, as a surge protector that can take 3 AC and 2 USB outlets, I will give Belkin the benefit of naming it a mini device.



I would STRONGLY prefer the re-design of the spacing on the AC outlets by allowing larger plugs connected side-by-side. As it is right now, only normal AC plugs and not block-style plugs are allowed without loosing all three outlets. So my proposal is to delete the middle AC outlet and move it to the end-cap of the device (opposite to the 2 USB outlets). As of now, there is nothing there so rather than cramp the 3 AC plugs, then move the third at the end and thus allowing for block-style plugs to be used and still retaining the 3 AC functionality.



OVERALL:



I would not hesitate to recommend the purchase of this surge protection for compact spaces as well as travel purposes especially with the lifetime warranty and amount of protection is offers.



Take note of the selling price Amazon and the others are selling this at. It's ridiculous to see the selling price of this exact device can range anywhere from USD10 to USD30.



Lastly, BE AWARE of the SPECS so you know if the USB device you are plugging is capable of being charged. Belkin Mini Surge Protector Dual USB Charger

Nice hotel room companion for plugging in the laptop, cell phone, iPod, and iPhone when you only have one outlet. The 5v outputs are regulated very well. It's quite a bit larger than it appears in the photograph as well as modestly heavy. Calling it 'mini' is deceptive. It's also rated up to 125v so forget using it anywhere except North America (not mentioned in the technical specs). Otherwise, it's built sturdy as a brick and will endure any punishment your travels may inflict upon it.

To get directly to this items flaw... It cannot recharge/power more than one USB item at a time. So what's the point in having two USB outputs?

The 120V outlets work as advertised. The ability to rotate the prongs is a plus as it can be adjusted to most if not all outlets.

The USB power fails if more than one item at a time is plugged into the surge protector. Even if, say your phone is fully charged, if you go to connect another item to run or charge, the surge protector will not supply the power that both items demand. The items that are connected will act as if they have been disconnected from their power source, then once the surge protector accumulates enough power(not certain, but seem to act as if there are capacitors)to start supplying power once again the items connected to the USB ports start to operate briefly until the surge protector cannot supply enough power for the two items.

As stated before, it will supply ONE item with power, without a problem. But will not supply enough power for two, even if one item is fully charged. - Travel - Power Strip - Belkin - Usb Charger'

This is literally a chainsaw blade fixed to two handles. If you can get enough teeth into the log this thing will chew through it. The carrying case is also very rugged, the lid flap secure with a clip fastener and holds the entire saw with some extra room.



Advantages:

Compact, the whole thing is smaller than a DVD and maybe as thick as two DVD cases.

Fast - as quick as your arms move this thing spits out sawdust.

Light weight



Things to know:

You need to have a pretty consistent rhythm when you cut or you'll bind the blade in the wood.

You do "waste" some energy because the blade is so thick. It's a chainsaw blade, not a flimsy band saw.

If one was to make a list off the top of their head of essential items for a camping trip, chances are a manual chain saw would not make the "cut". Although the idea of having a good saw along on a hike or camping trip would make a lot of sense to many, it may not be immediately realized that toting one along could be done so effortlessly. And be very effective at its task as well.



I own this very same Ultimate saw. I bought it more than 4 years ago and have used it many times on hiking trips. The chain on this saw is a full 24", but folds down easily into a carrying pouch that is very handy to tote along on your belt or in a backpack, and it is far superior in cutting ability to any small serrated knife or saw designed for camping. Though what the other reviewers here have mentioned as to its needing a little more evenness and concentration from you when sawing with it is very true, what is not mentioned at the time of this writing is how easily this saw becomes truly superior in its performance by enlisting the help of another to "man" the other end. Put two stout hearted folks on each end of this saw and the pair could take down an 8 inch or larger branch in a couple of minutes. Need to cut a limb far up on a tree? Tie a rope to each end and throw one end over the limb and you can take it down from down below. Trust me when I tell you that its a whole lot easier than taking down something even much smaller with a so called camp saw, or serrated hunting knife. This is a very quality made saw that has lasted and done an admirable job for me over the course of more than a dozen excursions into the wilderness here. It's a little bit more of a pain to keep sharp than a knife, but more than makes up for it with its superior use and performance. Amazons price is very reasonable and I highly recommend this saw if you are an avid, or even amateur outdoor enthusiast. It will end up being close to the top of your list from now on....

I had previously tried one of those very inexpensive pocketable wire saws and found it to be useless. This item was shown to be and demonstrated while camping. Those one actually does work. It's compact and given enough time you could cut pretty much any wood you ran across. Cutting dead branches 2-3" in diameter was no problem at all. Not cheap, but a good working saw.

This thing is indestructible, (unlike those worthless wire saws that break when you look at them) and really does cut wood. I've cut through a bunch of 8-10" logs with this, and if you've got the lungs, it'll do the cutting better than anything in its weight and bulk class that I've found.



It's maybe not the most efficient tool ever, because it's got a fat kerf compared to most other hand saws.



The bigger and more aggro you are, the more you'll enjoy this saw, I think.



My wife does not enjoy it much at all, actually. She just doesn't have the upper-body strength to run it. But then, sawing up wood (with any saw) is not really her strong suit.



I, on the other hand, really like getting my blood pumping by cutting through a big log with this thing. It's work, but I'm sure I can make cuts faster with this than with anything near its size, weight, and cost. There's no comparison between this thing and those little folding saws that are still much larger and heavier- they have little bitty teeth, and you get a little bitty stroke, so cutting takes forever. This saw spits out big chunks as long as you can keep it moving, and it cuts fast.



On the other hand, I wouldn't pick this as my saw if I was going to be cutting more than a campfire's worth of wood per day, because it's too energy-intensive. But nothing beats this saw for quickly ripping a fallen tree into useful lengths, and warming you up in the process!



Yes, my Sven Saw cuts better, but it's also an order of magnitude larger... There is no free lunch!



I carry the Sabercut, a firesteel, and a bit of good tinder in the pouch this saw came in. It's a tiny firekit that can reliably build many, many fires if need be. This saw is worth every penny and then some. Don't think about it- buy at least one, right now. If you're looking for the best value in a saw, by weight, volume, or dollars, you just found it, IMO.



Oh, do keep it oiled and don't submerse it during a rafting expedition, forget about it, and leave it damp for days, because it will rust and you will cuss. Don't ask me how I know. However, after some oiling and wire brushing, all is well. So apart from not being H1 steel, (and costing $100 that I'd gladly pay) this saw is a great tool you'll be happy to own.

Great saw but it does require cleaning and oiling so it doesn't get rusty from the tree/bush juices. Very heavy duty construction and much more reliable than the the last el cheapo "saw" which was more like a wire with abrasives embedded in it. Broke that in about 30 minutes. I glanced at the cover of the album in this week's free offerings from Amazon, and almost "blew it off."



But since I like a little Gospel here and there, I decided to give the samples a listen. WOW! There's some GOOD STUFF on this one!



One of the artists is SAVAE - the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble. 8 of the 15 tracks are theirs, all acapella. VERY nice.



Ben Bowen King (5 of the 15) is apparently also a San Antonio "local." It's solo guitar work with a definite "Windham Hill" flavor, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's precision guitar work with FEELING, no doubt about it!



Finally, there are 2 tunes by Gaelic Strings. "New Age-y", too? Sure... but, again, what's wrong with THAT?! Besides, you don't often hear "new agers" doing traditional gospel very often, do you?!



All-in-all this is a very good album. And it's WELL-recorded - at LEAST as good, if not better, than a LOT of the hyper-compressed MP3's out there. It's very open and transparent, and surprisingly quiet even with headphones. Traditional Gospel Hymns

'Traditional Gospel Hymns" is a really beautiful collection of old-time hymns with lovely harmonies. It is the perfect music for relaxing with a cold drink on a hot summer's evening. Instant serenity! Thank you Amazon!

This is a highly-listenable "sampler" of the traditional gospel songs many of us sing every Sunday. The standout tunes are the vocals by SAVAE -- just click on #1 "Amazing Grace." It's hard not to get those "good" chills. All of their hymns are acapella -- there's nothing that can match this unique sound. And as these folks are always in tune.



There are also a lot of great guitar instrumentals of such standards as "I Love To Tell The Story" and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus." It's clean steel-string guitar -- the sort of tunes you'd like to hear during the offertory. And who can fight with the price on this sampler!

One can certainly appreciate the content of the beloved hymns offered here, but with all due respect to previous reviews and the album's contributors, there's not a lot to commend these interpretations.

With the exception of the warm and reverent "Near the Cross", the group Savae, performs several rather sterile and perfunctory tracks that offer lifeless arrangements featuring vocalists that display truly modest talent.

Meanwhile, Ben Bowen King's various guitar instrumentals are largely indistinguishable from one another rendering the timeless melodies of the hymns all but lost in his arrangements. The same could be said for the two tracks attributed to Gaelic Strings.

Best Diabetic Socks - easter, socks

I bought some for my aunt who has circulation problems due to a heart condition. I started out buying the small ladies size, but as her condition worsened I gradually bought her the men's size and then when her edema was so much she could not wear shoes, I got her the 13-15 size shown here.



Of course, the 13-15 crew looked like knee socks on her, but, at least she could put socks on her swollen feet and she was very grateful and I was so happy for her.



The socks are lightweight(not a thin dress sock and not a thick bulky sock.)

Socks are mostly cotton. Tops of the socks are weaved to stretch & socks did not lose their form after washing them many times!

I just throw them in the regular wash using very warm water and toss in the dryer.



They are not seamless, but the seams are recessed so that they do not bunch so much at the toe. People who NEED seamless socks need to buy those more expensive socks.

They pretty much look like regular socks except the tops are weaved differently where the stretch happens.



There is a bit more room in the foot area than the Physician Choice brand Diabetic socks. I bought both brands.



I wear these socks too even though I don't have diabetes or neuropathy. I find myself showing family members how the tops will stretch out at the top and then bounce back to my leg. Now my brother, my nephew and some of my friends wear these socks.

The Quarter length socks were just the ticket for a friend has wide legs. Looks like a golfing sock.



Like I said, my aunt, who so much edema she could not wear shoes, was able to wear the largest size 13-15 around her house (as she was housebound.)

The unisex sizes mean a woman can choose a bigger size if they have edema or are pregnant. Even though these 13-15 size are meant for men shoes 12 - 13.5, my nephew who is tall and thin, but, has a size 14 shoe was able to wear them.



The tops of the 13-15 size do stretch considerably. Once during the cold weather, I put a pair over a 2 liter of soda thinking i could keep the bottle from freezing in the car when I went into the mall shopping. (laughing) True Story. It worked, but I do not recommend the socks for insulation, just demonstrating how much much the tops stretch.





(I also noticed that the White and the Gray seem to stretch a teeny tiny bit more than the dark colors.)

Bought a package of these socks, all I can say is outstanding, these are the same socks that the VA gave me several months ago. They are comfortable and very sturdy.I will be ordering more of these in the near future.

I had tried several different web sites looking for the right product and the right price to fit my budget. Of course, I had no way of actually touching, feeling, or even visually inspectiing the items. But the visual, the picture, and the price convinced me to give them a try. I will be the first to testify that it met my specific needs. In other words..."they were a perfect fit". Being a type 2 diabetic for thirty years, I have only recently had foot problems and two of them are: 1) My feet have become real sensitive to the touch...2) My feet swell from water retention due to the diabetes. So, regular socks were too confining and the material felt rough. If I went to a larger size, then they would have the tendency to fall down around my ankles. These socks suit me just fine. They are comfortable and do not slip down my leg. And the price!! When compared to other diabetic socks at $6.00 or more per pair... "WHAT MORE CAN BE SAID?!" Thank you very much. These are great socks. I'm no longer diabetic and no longer have to deal with cellulitis (losing 220 pounds does wonders for that) but I bought these anyway because they are just so comfortable compared to normal tube socks. I don't care if you're not overweight and have never had diabetes, if you have big feet, you owe it to yourself to get a dozen of these socks. You will not be disappointed.

I bought a dozen for myself and husband. I got the smaller ones for me. I wear a 9.5 and they fit perfectly, but I can also wear the larger ones as they come up further and are just a bit larger on the bottom. However, my husband wears a 12 and the larger socks fit perfectly. I gave 2 pairs to a friend who suffers from a heart problem and her feet swell incredibly and she finds them very comfortable. We all love these socks. I have purchased others which are much too hot to wear even in the winter. These are perfect! They don't bind at all, are comfortable and breathable. They wash well and retain their shape. I am going to buy more while I can. They surprised me with an unexpected discount. Thanks!!

I am not diabetic, but I have size 14 feet, and have a problem obtaining socks that are big enough. These are. They do not indent my ankles immediately, but stay up anyway. If you have big feet, give these a try.



Note added: I have worn these socks for awhile, and they are not the answer for those of us who merely have big feet. They do not stay up! After a long walk, they have rolled themselves down into a ring that indents the legs as much as any ordinary pair of athletic sooks. But they are cheap.

These socks go on easy and are a pleasure to wear. My right foot swells sometimes and my regular socks fit too tight when that happens. These are my new favorite sock. So comfortable, so easy to put on. They're just a dream sock! - Socks - Best Diabetic Socks - Easter - Diabetes'

Slingbox Tuner - sling, placeshifting

I have been looking at Slingbox for awhile now but was afraid to purchase the first generation product for fear of a tough installation. I am a business travel who finally decided to purchase a Slingbox now that the second generation product has been released. To say the least, I am not disappointed. I have (regular) basic/expanded cable with a coax cable protruding from the wall and a WiFi DSL setup. Installation was easy EXCEPT I had a problem installing the software onto my laptop using their CD-Rom Disc (Which is why I give this product 4 stars instead of 5). The CD does not contain the software download, instead it guides your PC to obtain the download over the internet. My laptop would download up to 90% of the software and then hang. I ended up having to retreive the download directly from the Slingbox Website (no big deal). Once installed, the software automatically configured my router so I could use my slingbox from the outside (from the road anywhere there is a high-speed internet connection). The picture is pretty good when I use slingbox from within my house. On the road away from home, the picture is considerably more distorted. In order to get a better picture, I need to shrink my screen. I watch my local news on the road and plan to watch my local sport teams. I love this product and it helps me make the most of my cable which I pay too much for! If you are a non-techie like me, BUY IT! Do not be afraid of the installation, it was easy. I purchased the Slingbox so my wife could watch TV on her kitchen laptop (new Dell Inspiron) rather than buy a new Flat TV or an external PC tuner (and then run a cable). Product works well and as promised. Good, smooth picture quality across my wireless G. Easy to set up. I have not yet tried to view TV remotely, so I cannot comment on that.



Points of criticism:



1) It does not work well if you want to multi-task (i.e. watch TV while you do other tasks on the same PC) as it seems to be a resrouce hog. When I tried this I had synch problems between voice and audio. I did not try reducing the quality settings to rectify this (isn't a big deal to me).



2) The box runs HOT. The underside is not well enough raised from the resting surface. When I picked it up the other day, it was hard to handle it was so warm. I now have it sitting on a small, rasied wire cooling sheet for cookies and it seems to be much cooler.



3) You can't view on multiple PCs simultaneously. I understand that it has only one tuner, but it would seem feasible that two PCs could watch the same channel.



4) I think they should've added a coax input for the SlingBox AV like they have for the Slingbox Pro. I would've paid an extra few bucks for that. Not a huge deal for my situation, but it limits future options.



Please post a comment if you have any insight into the above cirtiques.



PS: If you have a Logitech DiNovo wireless keyboard, the cordless multimedia numeric pad works great as a remote control.

I bought the base version of Slingbox for about $100 to be able to watch US television in Europe. My friend set the Slingbox up on his cable TV system and router in Washington, DC. He said it was no problem to hook up on his end, just a couple cables and a log-in password. All he had to do for the TV signal was put a splitter on his TV cable like hooking up another TV, except the "other TV" is the Slingbox. He still has complete control over his TV set, and I have control over the Slingbox via my comptuer. In summary, the Slingbox was easy to set up and works exactly as advertised. I am a very satisfied customer.

I ordered this device based upon good reviews of the first model. Installation went fine and the device works almost as expected. The problem is that Slingmedia, without notifying customers or potential costomers has downgraded functionality.



The new devices (and the old models which incorporate new firmware) now utilize an encrypted stream. This breaks programs such as "At Large Recorder" which let me record my TV material for my review at a time of my choice.



Since I travel abroad a lot, I have a great need to be able to place and time shift. Sitting in a hotel in Tokyo at 6:00p.m., I'm not much interested in watching what is on in the US at 3:00a.m.!



I'd advise looking at other solutions. I think it is very irresponsible of Slingmedia to have introduced this dramatic reduction in function without telling customers they would be getting less than in the past!

I purchased the SlingBox Tuner last week to watch TV at work when I work late. It installed perfectly through my home network - a Netgear 16 port switch, but it did not work with the Internet feature for remote watching. I called tech support the next day and the courteous rep guided me a page where I agreed to their version of remote desktop control/management. He logged in to my older Netgear router which was connected to my switch, and he configured the Port forwarding properly. In 5 minutes it was done. He was patient enough to guide me through channel setup.



Other reviewers have discussed the great features, but I wanted to add how comfortable tech support works. After having it for a week at work, it's awesome. It seems to stay under 300k of bandwidth so we don't get in trouble with IT or being bandwidth hogs.



I was somewhat concerned that the SlingBox Tuner would not work in 2009 or whenever digital TV is coming for good. He mentioned that it was highly likely that SlingMedia would come out with an adapter so that the Tuner customers were not stranded. Still, for $99 on Amazon with no tax or shipping, I figure if it doesn't work after 2009, then it's still a good deal at $50 per year to watch TV remotely. If I do buy an updated HD / digital version of the new Sling Box in 2009, you know it will be better than the current versions too. I really like being able to buy two recessed cable plates and two low-voltage mounting brackets in a single kit form.



Overall, the product was easy to install and looks great. My only issue is with the metal mounting brackets. These brackets are secured in the wall by three bendable tabs that are designed to be tightened with sharply threaded drywall screws. The three-tab arrangement would be fine for other low-voltage applications such as A/V connections, TV cable jacks, etc., but for this application where cables are intended to move through the bracket, sliding behind the wall to another bracket, the sharp drywall screws threaten to shred the cables, making these brackets a poor match for the intended application.



There are plastic brackets available that have a moveable flap drawn toward to back of the wall with a small bolt that would not shred the cables in the finished installation, and I wish that the kit had come with these instead. Here's a link to brackets I would recommend instead (I have used the single-gang version of this bracket for a coaxial cable faceplate): Dual Gang Low Voltage Mounting Bracket



I ended up using the screws to tighten the metal brackets to the wall, removing the screws afterwards, but one of my thinner cables still got snagged on the metal tabs when I pulled it through.



Overall, I'm pleased with the look of the finished installation, but I would recommend buying the parts separately in order to get the plastic mounting brackets (even if it costs more). Datacomm 50-3332-WH-KIT Flat Panel TV Cable Organizer Kit (White)

I saw a video on the Datacomm website of a woman installing these. She explained it so well and in great detail, that I decided to purchase them. I'm glad I did. I looked at home improvement stores and they were a lot more since they sold them individually. They were even easier to install than I originally thought and they look great.

This is the best idea ever. It gives our wall a very clean look and will definitely help when we decide to sell the house in the future. I have been to many houses where the cables are just hanging or the owners try to hide it with on of those plastic wire tracks but having no trace of wires is the best look you can get. Sure, you can always just cut holes in the wall and shove the cables in without these plastic housings and it would have the same look, but it's ugly and unprofessional and can be problematic when you decide to sell your house.



Go check YouTube for the installation. The metal pieces that comes in the kit makes this very sturdy, when you screw the metal pieces in it actually tightens and holds onto the drywall, then the plastic piece connects to that so it is 100% secure.

Great and easy to install. Just watch out for whats behind your walls. I had to drill due to a floor/ceiling half way between the two outlets. If you have an open bay yours will be much easier. looks awesome. - Wall Plate - Home Theater'

I got this power strip to use with my media center, and it works pretty well.



Pros:

- Cheap and good quality.

- Dedicated ports for power bricks.

- Creative design saves a bit of space.

- Lengthy cord.

- Flat plug design.



Cons:

- The design of the plug means that it blocks the bottom wall outlet if you plug it into the top outlet. A right-angle plug would have been much better.

- The cord is stiff, making it difficult to position the surge protector.

- The creative design means that cables will cross over each other when you use all the outlets.



Overall, it's very good for the price, but if you're like me and you like to keep your cables neat, this surge protector can be a little tricky. Fellowes CRC99090 Mighty 8 Surge

I have been using this for my entertainmetn center for a few years and has performed as expected. The multiple angles allow for bulky transformers and cords coming from different angles but the end result is a tangled looking mess. Still it works and that is probably unavoidable. I always look for a flat plug so that is nice but the cord comes off straight down rather than to the side meaning it will block the outlet below. I just use the bottom plug so it is not an issue but it is something to consider if you have other constraints (plugs that are controlled by a light switch etc). this is a minor issue though. In all I have been happy with it...

I ordered that Fellowes 99090 to protect a new computer and the several peripherals that attach to it. Its most attractive features are the price, the compact form and the innovative design allowing for as many as eight plugs to attach to it. So far, I am happy with my purchase.

The warranty paper claims 'lifetime' for the item itself and up to $50,000 on connected equipment for 5 years.



The lifetime in 'lifetime warranty' promise is not the purchaser's life but the life of the product itself. To quote from the Fellowes warranty document, "the lifetime of the product is considered to be the time until the product naturally ceases to provide surge protection". In other words, there is a warranty on the product for as long as it works. To quote again, "when the LED fails to light, the product has performed its duty" and the lifetime warranty is no longer in effect.



As for the $50,000 connected equipment warranty, the paper enumerates 10 instances under which the warranty becomes null and void including "4. Fellowes determines that the equipment was not damaged by an Event or that no Event took place. 5. Fellowes determines that the Surge Protector was not properly installed, was tampered with, or was altered in any way."



To conclude, this is good value for the price but forget about the warranties. I am taking one star away for the warranty claims.

The layout of the outlets on the Mighty 8 are great for tight situations on stages. It can be tucked behind or in between equipment and it will still allow easy access to all eight outlets, even when power cords are routed in from many different angles. I had been using a Mighty 8 for over 5 years and it never failed me. That one is still going strong, but the warranty for the surge suppression expires after 5 years, so it was time for a new one. You should always replace your surge suppressors after that long anyway. This is great, durable product.

This is a well thought-out design for a power strip. I can fix 4-5 power adapters without wasting any other points. Good build quality and sturdy cord to the wall. The wall plug is 'bent' so that the thick wire runs parallel (instead of perpendicular) to the wall socket.

I love this design because it is compact, and allows for multiple power supplies to be plugged into it without interference. I also love the right angle plug because it allows you to position your computer desk or table close to a wall.

Finally a surge protector without wasted plugs. My straight power strips end up with half of their plugs covered by bulky or wide transformers. With this one I can use all available plugs, allowing me to use just one strip instead of two. The price is right too. I am impressed! - Fellowes - Surge Protection - Power Strip - Surge Protectors'
