Diamond Blades

I am building a retaining wall and was going through the composite masonary blades . . . decided to go to the Home Depot for a diamond blade.$40.00+ Went on line and bought this blade on eBay. Works fantastic! It will cut cement blocks like they are butter. 7" Diamond Blade Wet / Dry Turbo for Circular, or Wet Tile Saw Tools

I needed a way to trim square concrete flagstone blocks for the edge of a patio, and was unwilling to spend $65 for a diamond saw for a few cuts. I saw this product and decided to risk the purchase price, and I can't tell you how delighted I am. The blade cut through the 3-inch concrete like it was pine. Of course the dust generated is another story. I highly recommend this product for your circular saw, but also recommend using a paint mask and cutting outside. :-))

I needed to cut down granite countertop for use in my work shop. Since this was a piece left over from a kitchen remodel, I didn't think I could justify the cost of a name brand blade. Perusing Amazon, I found this and another diamond blade from Coast-to-Coast. Given the price, I felt I could not go wrong and I didn't. The blade cut without a hitch! Perhaps not the best blades for long term use BUT, if you have a simple, one time job, these blades are highly recommended!

You get what you pay for. But it got the job done.

I bought this diamond blade for my 7-1/4 inch circular saw to cut through some stucco for a door framing project. It was one of the least expensive circular diamond blades listed on amazon. I needed it for just that one job only and decided to go for it. The packaging did not make a good first impression - the plastic cover was mis-aligned with the cardboard backing. When I tried to make the blade fit on my circular saw, the mounting hole on the blade wouldn't fit on the circular saw. I got a bit aggravated because I had everything lined up to get the job completed that day and I got hung-up on the very first step. The hole on the blade looked to be the right size so I tried again. That's when I noticed that the mounting hole on the blade was a bit uneven. I used a rat-tail file to even out the edge of the mounting hole on the blade and that made the blade fit snugly on the circular saw.

Now for the good part. The blade cut through the stucco very smoothly. For safety, I made two passes to make the cut - raised the blade a bit for the first pass, and then lowered the blade for the second pass to cut all the way through the stucco. No snags, no kick-backs. Throws off a lot of dust, as expected, so use goggles and dust-mask. Made a sharp, crisp cut.

The saw blade was coarse and it ripped through the rocks that I was cutting with ease. The price was good and it was a good value. The only bad point was that it did leave chipped edges on surfaces which I cut.

Advert says wet/dry, but item packaging only refers to dry. I bought it for a tile cutting saw replacement, but it is not really suitable for this. More of an industrial use for cutting such things as concrete blocks dry.'

Safety Light - glow light, safety light

This is a great invention! My 5 year old brings this elephant in his bed at night, and my 2 year old has the hippo. Both are so cute and my boys love them. They do have to be recharged each day or they won't be very bright the next night. For anyone wondering (as I was when I bought the first one) they are a hard plastic, not like the sort of squishy ones they sell at Target. I like that because they are very durable, they can't be chewed or anything. And if they get scuffed up you can use a magic eraser to get rid of the marks. They are about 6" tall. Also, there is a small button on the bottom; you press it once for "rainbow", twice for blue, three times for green, and four times for red. The rainbow one is pretty because it fades through all the colors of the rainbow, not just red, blue, and green. My kids love that. And then you hold down the button to have it stay on all night, or it will turn off automatically after 30 minutes. Thanks Kinderglo for a wonderful product! Kinderglo Portable Fun and Safe Rechargeable Night Light, Elephant

I absolutely love these lights. I purchased one for my oldest son about a year ago (brontosaurus) and it has been working like a charm. I purchased the elephant for my 4 year old and for some reason it keeps turning off mid-way through the night (yes, I hold down the black button until the red light is off). I tried using the reset feature but it still keeps happening. How do I know this? Because my 4 year old gets scared and shows up in my room at 3 am, 4 am, etc. because his elephant has gone off. I do highly recommend these lights - I think they are wonderful. I think I may have just received a bum elephant. If anyone has had this issue and can advise, I welcome the input. Otherwise, I may be exachanging my elephant for one that stays "awake" all night.

1/3/11 Update: I am just updating my review to reflect the great customer service from this company. I contacted them and told them about my elephant troubles and they said they had never experienced one of their products having this problem but immediately put a replacement in the mail. We received our new elephant and it is working perfectly so far. Thank Goodness - no more night time visits from my 4 year old! Just when you think customer service is a thing of the past you come across a great company that stands by their products. I may buy glowing elephants (or dinosaurs, or bears) for everyone I know.

We had a twilight turtle, but it shuts off after a certain amount of time. Our 20month old son was waking up at 2 or 3am freaking out in the dark. We needed something to stay on all night. Plug in night lights were just "begging" for him to unplug and play with. This is the perfect solution. My son sleeps from 7pm-7am and it remains on the whole time, never gets hot. He sleeps with it in his bed.

I originally bought the owl moonlite it was very adorable, although it had a malfunction. So I contacted the sellers and they were quick with a response, very helpful and didn't hesitate to replace and mail one out right away. I chose the newer Elephant moonlite as the replacement and it works great! My 2.5yr old toddler who had normally slept great alone in the dark in her room since she was 4 months old,was suddenly afraid of being alone in room, and probably of the dark. She would have night wakings and wanted to sleep in our bed. Since we started putting the moonlite in her room, using the various settings and colors it has seemed to help soothe her. She always requests for it to be on and is quite attached. I'm very happy to have purchased it and would do so again. It works and looks great, plus it was a lot bigger then the original owl light. I'm happy that the whole family is getting some sleep again!

We've had the elephant night light for about 6 months now. We use it every single night while we read books before bedtime. My son loves to turn it on and hold it while we read books. One day he brought it into my bed in the morning. Later that day I washed the sheets... and the elephant. When I took the sheets out of the wash and realized the elephant was in there I was so bummed thinking I'd have to order another one ASAP. However, to my amazement it still worked! This was about a month ago and the night light continues to work even after being washed. Love this night light!

I love this night light! It is cute and colorful and has enabled my three-year-old son to sleep in his bed all night without fear. He used to wake up in the middle of the night when it was super dark in our house and get really frightened and sob his way to our bed. The elephant light seems to comfort him and he stays in his room all night. He loves the rainbow setting (there are rainbow, blue, red, and green settings) and I LOVE that the light will stay on all night if I choose. We couldn't have a traditional night light that plugs directly into an outlet because all of the outlets in his room have large pieces of furniture in front of them. Also, most night lights that don't need to plug into a wall have a timer so that they automatically turn off. A 30 minute timer doesn't work when my son wakes up scared at 2 am. It is nice, though, that I have the option of a 30 minute timer or all night setting. I have the charger sitting on his dresser so when he wakes up in the morning I set the elephant on its charger and it's ready by the time he goes to bed. It seems very durable, but my son only uses it at night anyway. I have the charger where it's not easy for him to reach so I shouldn't have to worry about him damaging it. I am totally thrilled with this purchase. I wasn't planning to spend $25 on a night light but I'm so glad that I did! It has definitely been worth it for several nights of uninterrupted sleep.

I got the elephant and hippo for my 2 1/2 year old twin girls and they are already obsessed with them. I was worried my girls would love them too much and it would keep them up, but it's been fine. They really love playing with the lights even when they are awake. I love that they are soft, do not get hot, and are battery operated instead of needing an outlet to be on! There's just enough light produced so I can go in and peek at the girls without it being so bright that they are kept up. - Glow Light - Safety Light'

Sandisk 8gb Sd - 8gb, memory cards

Sandisk are the best memory card maker out there bar none - they hold all the patents and the highest quality products. At this price I was worried this would not be a real Sandisk product, (there's a lot of counterfeits about) but it IS the real deal, at least from this supplier.

good write speed, near identical to my Sandisk 4Gb SDHC, but not as fast as Extreme IV Compact Flash cards for serious pro camera users. Am ordering a 16Gb Transcend now, (different supplier) to see how that compares in write performance, though I expect it to be a good step down on this. Sandisk 8GB EXTREME SDHC HD Video Card Class 6 - 20MB/s (SDSDRX3-8192) [Hassle-Free Packaging]

If you've been reading all the recommendations for memory cards in your G9, and don't want to get a big card, don't worry! I bought this 8G card, and I've used it 34 times (so far)...for my underwater photography.

I have no problem at all. It's working perfectly. The recovery time is just like my smaller card, which is fine. I would suggest that you stick with the name brand, high-end card if you go to a bigger one like this. Also, I use a 4G card in my little Canon SD550. A lot of folks told me that it wouldn't work but it's great. I've had it for over a year, and I use my camera almost every day. Again, stick with name brand.

This card is a must for any photographer. The faster card cuts the delay time between shot to zero. The larger storage space means no worries about filling it up, at least in one trip. So if your getting a camera or have one; get this or you will find a time that you wish your camera loaded photos a bit faster.

I bought this card strictly for use as an alternate drive for my HP MiniNote computer, which has an SDHC slot. I have Puppy Linux installed to the card, and dual boot the computer. The computer sees it as just another drive. Additionally, I can insert the card into the USB reader, and use it to boot other computers (computers which will boot to USB, but lack the SDHC slot) as well.

The card is fast, commodious, and well-suited to this use. The price I got was very good at the time I purchased it; a good deal thru Amazon.

This SD card is great specially when you are shooting continuously as long as the buffer in your camera is large enough. The fast transfer allows you to move your pictures to the computer in no time. Highly recommended.

There's no excuse for not having as much flash memory as you may ever need. This SanDisk works for me. It's fast on recording and downloading. Best of all because it is a SanDisk and I bought it from a reputable dealer it delivers every time. I won a "SanDisk" SD card once on eBay only to discover later that (a) it was faulty and (b) it was a Chinese-made fake. 'nuf said? - Sdhc - Memory Cards - Digital Camera Accessory - 8gb'

Power Yoga - hot yoga, yoga mat

This yoga towel is the best for Ashtanga and hot yoga. I use it with the Manduka 85" mat & the combination is the best. If you don't break a sweat, then don't bother. If you do, then you cannot live without this towel. Be sure to wash it, the dark towels bleed like crazy. This towel had little nubs on the bottom that make it stick to your mat. It's great. I don't think it's really that pricey considering I use it 3 times a week or more. Yogitoes Big Skidless Yoga Towel (Indigo)

I sweat a lot during even a moderate paced Vinyasa set, and this is a much better solution than keeping a hand towel nearby and interrupting yourself every few minutes to attempt to dry off the mat when it doesn't even really make it less slippery. I'd almost say that the more sweat you've got, the better this bad boy works.

A few tips, though:

1) Don't dry it with a dryer sheet since it makes it less absorbent and more slippery.

2) I let the towel hang off the front of my mat about a foot to allow about a foot of bare mat down where my feet are in downward dog. Since my feet don't typically get sweaty enough to slip, I find I have a better grip that way.

3) When starting a Yoga set, it helps to get your hands wet to start since the towel seems to be slipperier than a mat when dry.

I later bought the small towel that Yogitoes also makes which I now use even more often since it can just be placed near the top of your mat where your hands go. But, I like either depending on how hot the session gets.

I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewers who use it in Bikram Yoga classes. The Yogitoes Big Skidless Yoga Towel is second to none in this capacity.

After using the Yogitoes skidless towel for a few months in my Bikram Yoga practice I was pretty happy with it. I bought 3 of them so I wouldn't have to do laundry after every class, and they have held up well to multiple washings. I did have to wash them several times to get the dye to stop bleeding. I have a large Jade Yoga mat and the towel was just about exactly the same size. It does not move around or bunch up like a regular towel. It is reasonably absorbant, but after 90 minutes of hot yoga I have sweatd buckets. For the last 30 minutes of class I am lying on a completely soaked towel that is puddling with moisture. It was reading a review for this product where I first heard about the hot yoga towel from eQua. Amazon sells the regular eQua towels, but I had to go elsewhere to get the hot yoga towels. The eQua towel is larger and thicker than the Yogitoes. It does not have the rubber nubs on the bottom, but I had no problem with the towel staying in place. It is more absorbant than the Yogitoes and I like not having to stick my face on a drenched towel. Both these towels are expensive. The eQua is generally about 10 dollars more, but I will be buying more of those than the yogitoes in the future.

First of all you must wash this several times SEPARATELY before putting it in the wash with your other clothes. The tag says to do so, but the colors were still bleeding after 3 washings.

I just measured my towel and it is 79", which is 6 inches shorter than my Manduka Black Mat Pro 85" mat. I learned if you don't want to slip off the end of you mat you need to make sure your towel hangs off the back of your mat. The Manduka is very slippery when soaked with sweat, but grippy when dry. The Yogitoes is the exact opposite, slippery when dry and grippy when wet. So you may need to put a few drops of water on your Yogitoes towel where your hands and feet go in down dog before you start your practice so you don't slip off your mat.

I am a very sweaty 6'3" male who does power yoga for 1.5-2 hrs 3-4 days a week. I've learned that I must immediately hang dry my towel in the sun or put it in the wash after a class. I was busy a couple of times after class and didn't wash it till later in the day and my towel developed a moldy type smell that was hard to get rid of, even after repeated washing in warm water. If you don't sweat that much you might not have that problem.

If you sweat as much as I do you could find that the yogitoes towel will become super saturated where you put your hands. Once your towel gets that wet it might move around a bit in down dog, or in lunge positions. For me that is usually toward the end of a class, but it could be a problem for you too if you sweat excessively like me. This is one of the reasons I wouldn't give a 5 star rating.

All that said I would recommend this product if you get sweaty during yoga and are sick of using a beach towel. I purchased the Indigo because it was a less expensive color.

These are great towels - they stay put pretty well during vinyasa (they have little rubbery dots on the bottom) and are pretty non-slip even when dry thanks to those little rubbery dots. They are light and easy to carry, and can be easily machine washed and dried. They hold well with use. A thicker cotton rug might be better for really hot sessions since the towel can become a little wet and clammy, but these towels are lighter, easier to transport, easier to wash and dry, and less slippery during the initial part of a practice session.

The larger size is essential for larger yogis - it lets you concentrate more on your practice and less on slipping off the edge of the towel in side arm balance or other poses.

I love my Yogitoes mat - it is very absorbent and actually seems much dryer than when I use a normal towel on my mat (I do Bikram yoga and so I sweat a lot), soft and comfortable to lie on. It is very slip resistant and nice and long, it extends 6 inches beyond my mat the long way on both ends, which is great for when you have to do a pose with a wide stance. I love it!

I sweat like no one else I've seen in class (Bikram and heated Vinyasa). This holds traction and soaks it up like nothing I've seen - on some particularly hard classes I squish walking on it by the end, yet can still practice on it.

Only gripe is that the big size only comes in blue. I'd like one of the other cool colors. - Yoga Mat - Hot Yoga - Skidless - Bikram'

Analog Watch - utilitarian, casual watch

I've had this watch for two months now, and I think what I like about it most, is that you can easily tell what time it is from varying angles. It is comfortable on the wrist, looks classy, and I'm sure this watch will last a long time - I have only owned swiss military watches for the past 30 years - and they have never failed me. Wenger Swiss Military Men's 72917 Classic Field Black Dial Brown Leather Military Watch

I suspect many are like me and bought this watch even though we wanted something else. The original Swiss Army watch by Victorinox is exceptionally beautiful, but at a premium price (retails at three times the price). But the Wenger is a good substitute.I like what I've seen so far, but I'll have to wait. The first watch I got had a loose minute hand that wobbled from side to side as the watch was rotated. I'm pretty sure that's not normal. Note: I'm not talking about the same phenomenon that affects the seconds hand on nearly every digital analog watch. Those are notoriously wobbly and misaligned even on very expensive marques. This watch is a little bigger than I'm used to (don't know what the reviewer below means by "small") at 41 mm, but I think it'll grow on me. Rolex has a standard of 35mm for their dress watches and Victorinox is about ideal at 38mm. But, hey...bigger is better, right? It sure is easy to read.Note that the watch pictured above is NOT the same watch that Amazon is shipping. You can see the actual model on Wenger's web site. The bezel is slightly bulkier and the numbers are larger and more blocky in appearance. The band is also different. I actually prefer the look of the one Amazon pictures, but that's not the one you're going to get.

I got this watch about five days ago and love the design and build quality. Simple, finely machined bezel, with an incredibly legible face. A great watch for someone who appreciates low key good looks rather than bling. The leather band is comfortable, and feels durable, but time will tell. I owned a timex expedition that aped the design, and while that was a decent watch for what I payed, it didn't have anywhere near the substantial heft or build quality as this Wenger.

This is a nice small watch that has a very good feel. It runs well and keeps good time. I got this watch as a gift, I would not haved picked it out for me as the band is to funky, it has a problem fitting the watch. I changed the band to a swiss black leather and nylon band and it looks great. So with that, its a great watch. I wear it all the time. - Swiss Watch - Casual Watch - Analog Watch - Utilitarian'

Black And Decker - air compressor, air pump

I am pleased with this inflator so far. (I hedge a bit, given the reviews stating that the device has failed for other users. But that's what the warranty is for.) It is easy to use, effective, and convenient with its storage compartment for power cords and inflation hose. I especially like the automatic cutoff feature; I can turn it on and let it do its thing while I'm doing something else. I run my automobile tires at higher pressures than most (60 PSI), and it had no trouble with those. It takes a couple of minutes, of course, but that's to be expected -- this is not a mechanic's air compressor, and I don't expect that level of performance. I haven't tried them on my higher pressure (90 PSI) bicycle tires yet.

Negatives that other reviewers have mentioned and my comments:

* Gauge readability: Yes, it's a little hard to discern small PSI increments on the gauge. But I never rely totally on any pump's or inflator's built-in gauge for my tires; I always verify with a good quality tire pressure gauge. The inflator's gauge and cut-off get me in the ballpark, and then I fine-tune using the tire pressure gauge. They are within 1 or 2 PSI of each other.

* AC power cord length: Not an issue. I likely would have to use an extension cord anyway. And the short power cord adds a bit to its portability -- no fiddling with it or trying to store a long (and useless while traveling) power cord with the device as it sits in my trunk.

* Noise: No worse than any other inflator I've used.

* Small storage compartment for cords and hose: Not too much of a problem, though it might take a little practice to get them coiled up the right way. It's handy to have the compartment.

* Short inflation hose. No shorter than other inflators in this price range I've used. Plenty long enough to reach a valve stem at top dead center with the device on the ground next to the tire.

* Plastic connector that *might* break. I'll judge it if or when it actually breaks, not before.

* Having to cut the power switch off and then on again to run it after an automatic cutoff: Gimme a break, how big a deal is that?? Black & Decker ASI300 Air Station Inflator

Overall works pretty well.

Positives:

- All hoses and wires and adaptors store inside the unit, for neatness.

- built-in handle is nice

- long 12V auto power cord

- two-year warranty

Negatives:

- When it stops automatically after inflating one item (such as a tire), it must be turned off and back on to inflate another item, or to increase pressure setting and continue filling.

- the AC power cord is extremely short. Pretty much requires an extension cord.

- the air hose is fairly short.

- The noise it makes is quite loud, though not as loud as some I've heard.

- fitting the cords and hose back into the storage compartment is not easy.

- the valve adapter is plastic, not metal, and doesn't seem sturdy. It works so far, however.

I have used it for about a week now. It is much better than the one I got from Walmart. The major issue I see is that the pressure gauge on this machine is rather small and it will be hard for you differentiate between 27psi versus 29psi without using an external gauge. My Toyota Camry calls for 29psi and my other car asks for 34psi front and 36psi rear. It was impossible for me to read 34 vs 36 psi on this machine's gauge.

Tip: To get the best out of this machine - get a good external mechanical pressure gauge with a relief valve (you can get a decent one for under $10 at Walmart). Then set the dial on this machine to be slightly over (2-3 psi more) the pressure required (I set it to 30psi when filling my Camry which needs 29 psi). Fill the tires with air using the machine. Then use the external gauge to measure the pressure and release the air using its relief valve until the pressure is at the desired reading. Works like a charm for me.

Other than this, the machine is quite nice and with a 2 year warranty it is a good buy. Amazon's price was amongst the lowest I could find.

Overall, I like this inflator. As is typical with about anything, it has strengths and weaknesses. The strengths:

- Once set, I verified with a digital tire gauge that the built-in pressure gauge is accurate to <1 psi, so you can actually use the auto-shutoff feature to make your life easier.

- It works with both AC and DC power, which makes it useable both around the house and in the car.

- All the wires nicely and completely store inside it for a clean appearance and easy-to-tuck-away form-factor, without need for velcro strips or the like.

- It pumps air quickly for a portable unit. I've had some that simply take forever to inflate a tire.

- It's not too loud for a portable inflator. Many others are deafening by comparison. (More on this in a moment.)

- The build quality is mostly pretty good. In particular, the body is made of a solid, heavy-duty plastic that doesn't feel flexy, and the power switch doesn't feel like it's going to break after five uses.

- The built-in carry handle--which is molded right into the case - nothing to fold out and break off--is handy and works very well.

The weaknesses:

- The AC cord is indeed on the short side. Obviously, it's designed to be set right next to or under an outlet (or used with an extension cord), and I'm fine with that. However, I still wouldn't mind just another three or four inches inches, just to allow a little more wiggle room when plugging directly into an outlet. But, it *is* more than long enough to reach up to the typical wall outlet from the floor, so no biggie.

- The fake plastic bolt heads on top are cheesy and scream "consumer-grade". That said, they're not bad enough that my wife would notice.

- I'd prefer an all-metal air connector. Admittedly, however, I have an old second-hand foot pump whose connector is almost identical, and everything *but* the connector is falling apart on that, so it's probably not nearly as delicate as it might seem. At least it's not the sort of plastic that tends to melt or crumble in our Phoenix summer heat.

- The gauge, though accurate as far as controlling the pump, isn't scaled in a way that makes it accurate to set. I managed to guess correctly on the first try, and then just left it, but you may not be able to do that if the items you're inflating require a variety of inflation pressures. Basically, don't throw out your dedicated gauge just yet. That said, even when you can't use it for final measurement, the built-in gauge will at least prevent you from grossly (and dangerously) over-inflating if you get distracted, and if you estimate high, it lets you use a separate gauge to reach your target by simply bleeding air out, rather than having to add air.

- The length of the DC cord may make things tight if you have a big vehicle and no power plugs toward the rear. When I did the tires in my Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab full-size pickup, I was able to get the unit to reach from the plug in the dashboard to the rear tires, but I had little length to spare. If I had the longer Mega Cab version, or the longer bed, I may not have been so lucky. That said, we're talking about the longest standard vehicles here, and their owners expect this sort of issue. If it'll be a problem for you, you probably already expect to need a DC extension cord.

- The power switch's design makes it too easy to flip into AC or DC when you don't intend to. I don't know, however, if this can actually cause harm to the unit. FWIW, I accidentally switched into DC while turning it off on AC, and it seemingly did nothing and worked just fine afterward.

As for the noise, since "loud" means different things to different people, I went ahead and measured it. From a distance of about two feet, using C-weighting, I got about 92 dB; I got about 96 dB at three or four inches. At those levels, if you had to listen to it all day in your workplace, OSHA would require hearing protection, but for just a few minutes while you inflate something, it's not a problem. Put in terms of what may be more familiar to many, it's equivalent to a moderately loud segment of an action movie in a theater.

Finally, a note about wire storage. Some here have complained that it's too hard to pack the wires into the unit. I was able to do so for the first time, on the first try, without any frustration and without having to redo the wires. Basically, a quick, loose loop or two suffices for the AC cord and air line, but the space is small enough that you really need to neatly wrap (but not tie) the DC cord. If you are the sort that does that anyway, as I am, you'll be quite happy with the storage compartment. If you're the sort that would prefer to simply shove the wires in, you'll have a harder time.

In the end, I'm a happy camper and definitely recommend this unit to others. - Air Compressor - Black And Decker - Portable 12v Air Compressor - Air Pump'

The Holocaust - russia, france

The imminent canonization of Mother Maria Skobtsova is long overdue. Unfortunatly it's the same old story; with her strong will and determination she was seen by some people as a "troublemaker" and a nuisance. But happily that great churchman, Metropolitan Evlogy, Exarch of Western Europe, saw beyond this and recognized her as a woman of exceptional qualities. Living as a nun "in the world" she couldn't hide anything and didn't intend to. She fought her battles, often alone, but she brought love and comfort to many. She lived in Paris at the time Ernest Hemingway lived there too, but this is not the story of the "moveable feast". It's the story of those less fortunate whose goal of the day were to survive illnesses, epidemics, frost, and starvation. Two clean different pictures. By the grace of God, Mother Maria Skobtsova will be officially proclaimed a saint - a status she've had for many people since her horrible death in a Nazi KZ in Easter 1945. Now we wait for a broad presentation of her poetry; a subject only touched from time to time in this book. We are, though, grateful to the unselfish work of the author, Sergei Hackel. Pearl of Great Price: The Life of Mother Maria Skobtsova, 1891-1945

Mother Maria Skobtsova (aka St. Maria of Paris; St. Maria of Ravensbruck) was a Russian Orthodox nun of extraordinary compassion, courage, and insight. Sergei Hackel chronicles her life beginning from her youth when she was born Elizaveta Pilenko in southern Russia in 1891, through her years of disillusionment during the Communist Revolution, her escape to Paris with her husband and children, her spiritual rebirth and eventually becoming a nun committed to helping those destroyed by Communism and Nazism, and then to her final days in the Ravensbruck concentration camp. Mother Maria was a profound poet throughout her literary life and became a brilliant theologian as well. The remarkable story of her life comes full force of the impact just one person can make. Mother Maria also suffered the unspeakable heartbreak of losing all three of her children. The death of her father when she was a teen led her to denounce her faith. The death of her second child drove her to be a mother for all. She took upon herself the yoke of Christ's own words, that how we regard the least ultimately reveals the regard we have for Him who came to share in our humanity (Matthew 25:31-40). Mother Maria stood in solidarity with each person who came to her for help, seeing in each the living image and icon of Christ himself. This renewed awe for Christ gave her an indomitable spirit. She suffered the fate of those with whom she stood so fervently, refusing to abandon them even to the end. She, along with her priest and son, were all arrested by the Nazis for helping Jews to escape from Paris, including many children whom she hid in trash bins. She survived two years in concentration camps during which time she endured horrific torture. She was murdered in the gas chamber at the Ravensbruck concentration camp in 1945. Her feast day in the Orthodox Church is July 20th, along with her priest Father Dimitri, her son George, and their colleague Ilya Fondaminsky.

The Pearl of Great Price includes many of her poems, so imbued with her faith and spiritual struggle. Other extraordinary books are: "Mother Maria Skobtsova, Essential Writings" by Orbis Books and the children's story, "Silent as a Stone, St. Maria of Paris and the Trash Can Rescue", by Jim Forest and Dasha Pancheshnaya, and published by St. Vladimir's Press.

The Jews were not the only victims of Hitler's genocidal and homicidal policies. "Pearl of Great Price: The Life of Mother Maria Skobtsova 1891-1945" is her story of why this remarkable woman is canonized by the Orthodox church. An unconventional nun having two failed marriages, given birth to children, she answered the call to faith as World War II swept Europe. Supporting both the refugees of a battered and beaten France and the Jews, she soon found herself in the concentration camps with them. Even forced there, she continued her efforts to help people, eventually earning a tragic death for her efforts. A welcome and highly recommended addition to personal, community, and academic library Holocaust Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists, "Pearl of Great Price" is the true story of a truly remarkable woman, and an enduring testament to the human spirit. - Russia - The Holocaust - France'
