This is a very well writen book with plenty of pictures, but it is for people with limited construction experence. I bought this book because I need rafter tables, specificialy jack-hip rafter tables. This book does not have any roofing tables and gives three paragraphs about reading a jack-hip rafter table (but does not have the table). If you have more than three years of residential construction experence, you should already know everything in this book. Ultimate Guide to House Framing (English and English Edition)

"Ultimate Guide to House Framing, 3rd edition" is a well written reference manual for how to frame a house or garage.

Well written - If you plan to do any building a must own.

What I liked:

-1/3 of the entire book is diagrams showing "how" to.

-book covers many different types of framing, and shows several different techniques.

-It points out where you should consult your local building codes to see if certain items apply ( i.e. do you need hurricane straps)

-well organized into logical chapters.

-A high emphasis is placed on safety and the proper use of power tools.

-The author take the time to explain the basics and tell you how to do thing properly.

What I didn't like.

- nothing.

Probably the most common framing job a homeowner is likely to tackle is an unfinished basement but there is nothing for them here. Chapter 14 covers basement framing with steel - not lumber! For a lot of homers that makes this book a big fat zero. As for the rest of it, I'm not sure this book is suitable for anyone. Half the book is written for someone whose almost ready for their contractors license and the other half is written for someone who has never picked up a hammer. It really feels like it was written by more than one person. The switch occurs suddenly and is jarring, confusing, and annoying. The first chapter covers extremely basic stuff most DIY guys already know (e.g., what is pressure treated lumber, common lumber dimensions, etc.). Then chapter 2 gets technical (e.g., glossaries of blueprint abbreviations and symbols and discussions of engineering stuff like sheer forces and live loads, etc.). The next two chapters get extremely basic again, describing tools you'll need in detail (nearly an entire page devoted to framing hammers) and a few chapters later you are into gabled roofs and shed dormers. The book aspires to provide all the engineering and construction knowledge you need to frame a Victorian house from professional architectural drawings by someone who has never actually held a screwdriver before. Ridiculous.

Before I used to think building a house was impossible. I had no idea what went into it. It seemed much too difficult or complicated for me. This book has helped open what before seemed like a black box.



The book is chock-full with pictures. It starts with safety suggestions, tells you what tools you'll need, talks about some engineering basics and goes into great detail on floors, walls and different kinds of roofs. There are additional sections on stairs, basements and bay windows.



If you're new to framing and want to build your own home, or at least understand how a lot of it works, you will enjoy this book.

This is not an "ultimate guide" to house framing, but rather a beginner's introduction. I bought this book to understand the attic framing in my 1950s house a little better, but there were some things I couldn't find in the book. For example there is just one short paragraph that talks about collar ties. When I searched the web, I found long articles written about the pros and cons of collar ties, and that helped me a lot more than this book. If the word "ultimate" is changed to "beginner's" in the title, then this book is allright.

This book has helped us design and construct a new outbuilding/playhouse and it is very clear and easy to understand. Great illustrations and invaluable suggestions from professionals make the project go much faster and be better quality that it would have been otherwise. Highly recommend.

This book isn't just for framing new houses, it includes tons of info on how to remodel existing structures safely and securely. There's even "green" chapters on using eco-friendly materials. What's nice is that this book explains why things are the way they are, e.g., why blueprints come in several staged steps rather than one complex drawing, why it's important to understand different "loads" and how you can screw them up. This could serve as a textbook for a basic course in framing; however, if like me you watch those "remodeling" shows on various networks, this book more than any other will acquaint you with the argot. Worth every penny.

I had looked at several books on framing before ordering this book and another. I am handy and been involved in some repairs and remolding in the past. The current project is a large ground up multi-floor workshop area. While my area has no building code I want to go with generally accepted building practices. Tripp Lite - usb cable, tripp lite

I am using this to extend the usb printer connection to my computer, after trying unsuccessfully with a lower cost active extension cable that I purchased elsewhere. The generic cable I tried first had near constant communication errors, making it essentially unusable. After several weeks of use, I have had no problems or error messages with the Tripp Lite cable. It seems well made. I should have purchased a quality product first. Tripp Lite U026-016 USB2.0 16-Feet Certified Active Extension Cable

I bought two of these Tripp Lite U026-016 USB 2.0/FireWire 16 foot Active Extension Cables. I have had them for a month and use them with both my PC and with my Playstation 2 Force Feedback Driving Wheels. They are well designed and made with nice thick insulation on the wires and tight connectors.



I am a picky consumer and have been very happy with other Tripp Lite products. (I also own two IsoTel Ultra 8s with metal cases and frequency shielding.) So after doing some comparisons, I put these at the top of my list. Tripp Lite is a little more expensive, but I have never had any failures, problems or headaches because of them.

Any USB extension over 15 feet requires an active cable. This one works just fine. I am connecting a VGA webcam to use as a security monitor and it needed to be a ways from the PC. I have not yet tried chaining a couple together.



I had earlier bought another brand that cost more but didn't work. Junk. So my advice is to buy the ones that have the most consistently good reviews.

USB is a complicated protocol so lets get to simplification.



USB Power is 5V +/- 0.5 V and 500 mA current. About 2.5 watts of power are available. The reason alot of external usb hubs come with a wall wart is if you have 4 devices each drawing 500 ma, that's more than the computer gives you, and something will have to be removed without external power. The wallwart is usually a 5.5V, 2A or less power supply so that each usb port can have the full 500ma on a 4 port hub, neglecting the data rates which are transparently handled on usb 2.0



As for cables, the standard USB cable was defined as 6 feet, just like power cords are 6 feet most commonly. Following the power cord tradition, USB offered a 10 foot extension for a maximum distance of 16 feet before the signal degraded too much to be usable. Hence you'll find 10 foot PASSIVE extension cables in the $9 price range, which you can combine with your existing 6 foot cable for 16 feet total.



The real advantage here is there is a low power (<50mA) "1 port" hub at the end of this 16 foot extension - that regenerates your high speed usb signals for your device. It does steal some power, allowing 450 mA for the device, but most devices don't complain about not having the full 500 mA to themselves with a few exceptions for battery containing devices that must charge and disk drives that get their power from the usb cable.



Now at the end of this you can put another 10 foot extension and 6 foot cable for 32 feet of total length if needed for outdoor or room to room usb. It's a great product to get around the 10 foot extension common length limit.



Often I have "usb radio fobs" or radio transmitters for wireless keyboards. By putting them high up the wall and onto the ceiling, I can carry the wireless device that works with the fob a long ways away - much further than if the fob is hidden down behind the pc chassis on the floor. The 16 feet gives me adequate length to go over then up the wall and into the center of the room for best coverage.



Overall I much prefer the active extension cable to the passive since the signal received at the PC will be just as good as if the device were plugged directly in. Tripp Lite uses a well shielded cable for exceptional quality and very low signal loss in the run back to the PC. While priced more, it is an active hub and you get that added value from the product.

1st: I noticed from the bar code number that it was made in the USA;

so, it's a relief knowing it's not just another piece of crap from China.



2nd: It seems to be very well made (but then it should be for the price).



3rd: It performs very well as a USB Repeater. My Linksys WUSB300N USB

Network Adapter performs perfectly using this as a 16 foot extension.

Getting my USB Adapter in front of a Window really improves the signal

strength (although even then, positioning the unit even a couple inches

one way or another can really affect the signal).



Final Comment:

I think sellers would do them selves a favor by stating in their ads

if the product is not made in China. Most people these days

associate the "Made in China" label to mean the same thing

as "CRAP".



It's refreshing to find a good product idea that hasn't been

If I'm going to spend more than a hundred bucks on an item or somewhere around there, I do extensive research first to know I got the best bang-for-the-buck and, consequently, dodge any potential future buyer's remorse.



I've realized that the time I spend doing my product comparisons is often time that others don't have so I may as well share what I can.



I'll start by saying that you'll see my "Verified Amazon Purchase" on the Flip HD Ultra Camcorder review because, obviously, that's the one I wound up buying and I'll share with you why. But what I like in a camcorder may not suit your own needs so I'll break it down and let you decide what's best for you via what I found out:

IMPORTANT NOTES:

F: Best low-light performance for the mini cameras (though not perfect at all) and least amount of blurring and dropped frames in my opinion. Best color. Only one with stereo sound. You can get an underwater case for this one! Though that may sound crazy for a Texan, we use the camera non-stop on vacations and even when we aren't IN the water, we are around the water...on boats, in the sand with sea mist, etc. Then we can dive in and record the fish. Comes preloaded with flipshare software...just plug in to computer and it pops up. Only one with stereo sound.

M: Colors don't appear as good on the Mino as the other cameras. Thinnest camera. Make sure you get the one that only comes in the color aluminum or brushed metal. If it comes in any other colors it is the 1st generation MinoHD and they improved upon that one in the newer models. Great audio. Better shooting in low light than most mini cameras. Camera comes preloaded with FlipShare software. Can get still images through flipshare software.

CL: Decent filming in low light but not nearly as good as the Ultra or Mino; Software is preloaded in camcorder.

K: This is the only camera that I compared without the built in image stabilizatin which corrects for shaky images. What appears to be metal in picture is actually a chrome colored plastic. That said, this had the largest viewing screen of all of them. 2.4" Very poor in low light and seemed to have far more shaking and blurring. It also takes still pictures but they are really really poor quality...same as a lesser-quality cell phone pictures but good in a pinch if you want a still shot and have no cell or camera I s'pose. Heaviest for a pocket camera. Software is not preloaded in camcorder but a cd comes with it.

There were lootttts more I came across when researching the Flip Ultra HD but those are some of my favorites.







CONCLUSION: Clearest picture and sound was important to me, expert reviews that pointed to the Flip UltraHD as well and I liked the built in software and the case I can get to shoot underwater. It is the number one selling camcorder as well. So that was my personal decision-making process. However, keep in mind that if you need reading glasses none of that will matter if the 2" screen is too small for your viewing the shots easily for playback in which case you may wish to get the Kodak if that's important to you..



Also: No matter which one you get, you will probably want a mini tripod if you ever want to be in the shot yourself do don't forget those.



Also note: It's confusing because when these manufacturers make changes in the camcorders, they do not change the names on the new versions, nor do they change the names if it's an HD version or a non-HD version so be sure you look for the "HD" after the brand name and look for "2nd generation" or "newer version" on the Mino and Vado if you like one of those better so you don't get the older models.

Memory Card Adapters - cell phone memory, 8gb sdhc

This 8 GB micro SD card is excellent. Not much else you can say. I paid for the item, it shipped and I got it. It works on my Sansa Fuze 8 GB MP3 Player and now I have 16 GB total. It comes with a standard SD-Card adapter so you can plug it into a camera or laptop, etc.



The price was right but the shipping was insane to Canada for an item that weighs less than 1 lb with packing material . That is my only complaint and that is on the side of the seller.

At first it didn't work in my Blackberry 8320 but after a little research I realized that I just needed to update the software to the newer version which supports cards up to 32Gb.



I wanted the card to hold music and photo's and it has done a prefect job. For $21 delivered you cannot go wrong.

I read a lot of reviews about items that come listed as "Bulk Package" and I have to say that so far I have no complaints.



First of all, the brand is SanDisk which is very well known. It's not something that's never been heard of. It's 8GB and has an adapter. How can you really go wrong? This item is so versatile.



I'm using mine in my Blackberry and even though it reads it as only a 4GB, I haven't had any problems. I have been told that this happens a lot in phones. They see it only as a certain amount that the company has 'maxed' on the device (probably because an 8GB didn't exist when it was manufactured), but I've loaded all kinds of photos and music onto it and have had no problems. If all else fails, I know that I can load the micro card into the adapter and use it in my camera. So, really...it's a win-win situation no matter what.



Definitely a good buy.

Gotta love how technology doubles every couple of years. These things just keep getting smaller, faster, higher capcity. Not to mention the cost has come down a lot on all this flash memory stuff. Why get a gig card when you can have eight?! It's cheap! Go ahead, you know you want to.

this was the best deal ive got in awhile! my phone company (starts with A and ends with T) wanted $54.00 for this card and adapter! it is the same brand and same model number. shame on them and good for amazon for charging reasonable rates. card works great in my samsung impression, and adapter works with my dell and hp computers.

I recently purchased this card for my Samsung Behold. It has worked really well and I have had no problems so far. The 8gb has been enough space for my music, photos, and videos. And the adapter was a nice bonus making it easy to swap files between my phone and laptop.

It's a great deal and works well in my Sansa Fuze. Holds like 80 hours of music at high quality. The adpator is handy too.



Might not be the fastest (speed rating is 2) but for my need it's fine and was one of the cheapest I could find. It arrived in 4 days

The card I received was a pretty blatant fake. Even if I didn't have a real sandisk 4gb microsd card to compare it to the bad ink job on the face of the card (some numbers/letters are incomplete) and the incorrect labeling of the size are pretty good indicators. For what it's worth, the card I received was actually 8 gb, but it reads so slowly I can barely get things to recognize it half the time, even after formatting it. If you just need a card to hold data for storage and don't care at all about potential read speed problems, this is probably a decent deal for you, otherwise I'd recommend you steer clear.

Cleaning System - phillips, mens grooming

Having exclusively used Norelco (and 1 Remington) shavers over the past 30 years, I can say that this is by far the best shaver I have used yet. Here's what I like:



* Gives a great shave

* Very quiet

* Charges quickly

* Alot less irritation than previous razors. I think the fact that the heads move to the contour of your face has alot to do with that.

* Alot easier to hold

* Looks stylish, alot slimmer than previous models



My previous top-of-the-line Remington had the cleaning kit (similar to the Norelco setup). I never really liked having to buy the cleaning fluid, and changing the filters, etc. (kind of messy). But, it was a gift, so I dealt with it.



While looking at these newer Norelco units, I was already biased into feeling that I "needed" a unit with the Jet Clean system. Today, while at Costco (sorry Amazon), my wife bought me the Norelco 1280x (no cleaning kit) as an early Xmas present (it's the "Premium Edition", $169.99 after Costco's current $30 off coupon - a good deal, I thought). After using the unit, I am very pleased with the shaving performance, as well as the cleaning.



The unit cleans very easily by running hot water on the blades for a few minutes (per the manual), after which you can open up the blades (they flip up) and continue to rinse. It's recommended that you do this after every shave, but who wants to do that every morning, right before work (not me, anyway)? I can see how doing this at least a few days a week will keep the unit very clean, without the hassle and expense of dealing with the cleaning fluid. I have used several electric shavers in the past and always experienced irritation on my neck from the shaver. No matter how long I used these shavers (allowing for the adjustment) my neck would be irritated and burned after the shave. I can truly say that after using this shaver just a couple of times, I noticed the irritation became less and less noticeable. Now after using this shaver for over a month I have no irritation after I shave. I have used this shaver dry, wet and with shaving gel. I get the closest shave I have ever gotten with an electric shaver. I was kinda hesitant about spending $349.99 for an electric shaver but now I am glad I did.

I used Norelco's for years but 4 years ago tried the Braun 7 Series. It never shaved as close as my Norelco's but I was reluctant to try the Arcitec because of the mixed reviews. The 1280cc was on sale at Kohls so I thought I'd try it out. To begin with it's much quieter than the Braun 7. Both the razor itself and the cleaning system are much quieter. Additionally with the Norelco you add solution from a bottle to the cleaning chamber which is significantly cheaper than using the prefilled cartridges from Braun. My shave is much closer than I had with the Braun and as a result I'm able to shave faster. I also don't have to go over areas of my face to get as close a shave as many times as I had to with the Braun. Overall I think this is a great razor. Hopefully it will last through the years but only time will tell.

Over the years I have strayed from my linear foil shaver (Braun - currently a Series 7) for forays in to other ways of shaving. I've tried every razor Gillette has put out, an old-fashion double edge razor, and several Phillips Norelco rotary shavers. I always seem to end up going back to Braun as it has always worked best for me, despite having very sensitive skin.



When the Phillips Norelco SensoTouch 3d (1280cc) showed up last week, it had been about 4 days since my last shave (which means about 4.5mm hairs - or ~3/16in). I decided to shave half my face wet and half my face dry. I started with circular motions on one cheek with zero pressure, per the instructions, and was shocked at how easily this shaver cut the hair - not a single tug or the tiniest bit of irritation, although it takes about 10 circular passes over every inch to get all of the hair. I continued on to my neck. Here I noticed a bit of irritation, but it was much less than my Braun. I wet and lathered up the other half of my face and gave the SensoTouch 3d a try wet. In my opinion, the wet shave was much more irritating to my skin and didn't get any closer than the dry shave.



As with all other rotary shavers, sideburns and my upper lip are extremely difficult. For sideburns, this shaver has a pop-out cutter that does a good job - but it still leaves too much stubble and the round rotary head can't get close enough... making a clean line difficult.



Since my initial experience, I've shaved two more times (both dry). The shaver is doing great on my cheeks, but is still irritating my neck.



I've decided to give Phillips the 21 days they claim it takes to adjust to the razor, so I will update my review when I have made a final decision.



UPDATE: After giving this razor more than the recommended time, I've given up on it. The razor worked great on my cheeks, but was horrible for my neck. I sent it back to Philips for a refund, but they magically "lost it". I'm still waiting on my refund. - Mens Grooming - Shaving - Norelco - Phillips'

Weight Loss Suit

This is probably the best invention in the history of trying to make weight for competition. I wish I'd discovered it BEFORE dropping 48 lbs. in 24 wks. for a bodybuilding competition.



It fits like a glove, and from the moment you zip it up, you start feeling warmer. I used it in conjunction with long-sleeved shirt, pants and hat, and I can honestly say I don't think I've EVER sweated so much, even wrestling in plastic sweats in an over-heated wrestling room back in high school.

The "excellent service" part of the review title refers to the fact that I had a shipping issue when I purchased a second suit. (Shipper's fault, not the KuttingWeight's fault.) Nevertheless, Dustin was all over the problem and provided excellent customer service.

I purchased the weight suite to work out in after using a sweat belt for several weeks and getting good results so I figured why not try more than just the waist. I have been very pleased with the quality and the performance of the product. I use it almost every day and I work out for 45 to 50 minutes. I can't believe how well it has helped my weight loss and reshaping of my body. The sweat just pours off me and the fat along with it. I have dropped 2 jean sizes in 8 weeks and I contribute much of it to this weight suite. Not that my tough workouts and improved diet have not helped but I believe the Kutting Weight suite has really accelerate the process. I strongly recommend this item to anyone wanting to increase their core temperature when they work out and increase the intensity of their workouts.

I am a 41 year old wrestling coach. I wear this suit to every practice. The suit gets me warmed up quickly and keeps my back muscles warmed up throughout a two hour practice. Without the suit, older guys like me tend to get stiff after warming up to wrestle and then cooling back down during technique sessions or even a water break. With the suit, I can get back into "live wrestling" and full speed drilling back like I could when I was twenty.



Dustin - you have created a "mini-time machine super suit" that lets us old-timers get back into the mix and enjoy going full speed without stiffness or injury.



This is really the greatest workout-related product I have ever purchased.

The suit wasn't for me. I did like the fact you can move around freely without worrying about ripping a vinyl suit, but it just felt like a wet suit too me. 80 bucks is pretty steep for a wet suit in my opinion. Maybe others might like it and it will work for them. Might be perfect for a fighter like a MMA. The service was good though. Dustin answered my emails promptly and gave me a refund once I sent the suit back. Overall (A) for service and (D) for product. Sizing is a little tricky. Get a tape measure and measure your chest. If your a 42 like me, get an XX vice a X. XLG was to tight so get 1 size above what you are.

I used this Kutting Weight Suit for about 2 weeks and amazingly I lost about 15 lbs . I also incorporated counting calories and carbs; not eating past 1200-1500 cals and drinking lots of water. I ran on the treadmill for 30 mins to 60 mins and the weight just melted off!

I've used other sauna suit before but this outbeat the rest, the price i did find a little steep but i bought it anyway, the best investment of all time.

when it first arrived and i tried it on right away it was a little tight in my chest area had to wiggle the zipper over my boobs.

the first day i used it i was sweating bullets, it was a little hard to move in because of the chess area but i worked thru with it anyways for an hour.

the next day the same thing but i was so convince this item will melt me down to fit it right i didnt give up, on the third day the kutting weight suit went right up and over my boobs and left extra room,

wow i thought i must of lost either inches from wearing this or weight.

i weight myself an there was 4lbs gone, i didn't measure myself but i could tell inches was lost just from the fit of the item and my other clothes.

WOW!! Played this game for this first time on Halloween! This game is HILARIOUS!! Each player takes turns reading a card...then ALL players write down their answer without showing anyone...the "reader" then reads the answers aloud and each person must try to guess whom might have wrote that particular answer. Questions like "What you might find in a library" gets a whole new meaning when you are with a group of great, funny, close friends! This game is great for any get together...the more the merrier with this outrageous game!! The Game of Things

This is one of those games that has to be tried out, and once you do, it's really funny. What it does is bring out the comedian in everyone. There's a point system, and it's fun trying to figure out who said what, but like Balderdash, what starts to happen is, people start to go for the laughs instead of the score. Running jokes start to appear - previous answers that make little sense for the new question, but they make everyone laugh. We've played the game where people in the group are still reminding each other of one particular answer a year later.

Bought this game yesterday with high hopes for fun! We have a group of friends that like to play games and this one seemed perfect for us. While we had moments of great laughter and fun, it was mostly way too slow. We will hopefully play again (I may have to do some convincing to the group though!), but will do so with some modifications taken from other similar games. One suggestion: get a dry erase board to write responses down on....makes it move quicker when you don't have to repeat the answers over and over.

My husband and I are in our late 20's and host many couple game nights. We are always looking for games that get everyone laughing. We already own and love playing Loaded Questions and this game is very similar. A card is read, "things you shouldn't laugh at", "things you would like to do in a blackout", "things you wish were delivered", or "things that jiggle". Every player writes an anonymous answer and others have to guess who gave what answer. In Loaded Questions, one player per round tries to match the quotes to each player. This is a key difference in the Game of Things. Each player gets a chance to match a quote with another player during a round, if they are correct they get a point and try to match another person to a quote. If they miss, the next player tries to match and so on.



Some reviews say that this game is slow and boring but I think it depends on the group of people you are playing with. The level of fun depends on the creativity of your group and how risque you want to be. Obviously answers can be more serious or everyday..."things that jiggle." Answer: Jello. Answers like this might make the game boring but if you have a creative, spicy group of people then prepare for laughing until you might wet yourself.



Another reason people might see this game as slow is how the answers are written and given. Everyone gets a sheet of paper that is made of perforated strips. You write your answers on the strips, give them to the reader, and then people one by one try to match. Sometimes the answers have to be read more than once so that people can think who might have given which answer (a similar issue in Loaded Questions). Repeat readings would be especially needed if you are playing with a large group of people. We play with 5-7 people and that works well. I don't think this game would be as good for groups larger than this because it would be hard to keep track of everything and may pull away from the fun. It truly depends on what your focus is for this game. If you want to focus on the funny answers and make the point system secondary, you will enjoy this. If you are more concerned with who will get the most points and win you might find the point system frustrating in a large group setting.



We have really loved playing this at game night and do keep scored but are more concerned with giving creative funny answers that make people laugh. If you are a fan of Loaded Questions you will like this game.

This game is so insanely funny. I had seen it characterized as blah in a review and, with all due respect, I thought that if your group is blah, the game could be blah. It's the answers that spark the hilarity and when you get the question "Things you will do after your retire" and someone's response is "Nude luging with Ted Nugent" I'd say it's a pretty good time.



I've played it twice, once in a large group and once in a small group. It was challenging in the large group and really easy with the minimum four, but as with most games like this, it's the game play and not the winning that counts.

The game said adult on it, but other than a few questions that kids wouldn't know, it worked out well for us. As long as the child is able to read and write, this is a great family game. We had more laughs and fun trying to guess who said what. It helps to know the people your playing with a little, in order to identify who may have made the statement. I ended up buying several of these games to give to each family member since the kids went back home and wouldn't stop talking about how fun it was.

We played this game twice now with large groups (8-13 players), and it was a blast. It allows you to come up with anything you want... which means it could be PG when playing with teenagers, and more risque in a group of all adults. Everyone has a good time and it is easy to teach new players. You can play a full round, which could take close to an hour, or less for a shorter game. We love it!

We absolutely love this game, this game as well as Apples to Apples are this families go to games when we have guests. The larger the group the more challenging and fun it is, but we have played with as few as 4 persons. It is just quick and rather easy with a small group. We have learned a lot about our friends and family through the questions and answers during the game and we always end up laughing hysterically. Seeing life from anothers point of view is part of the fun. I highly recommend this game. We bring it along to many outings. If you find it boring or ho hum you might want to consider adding new friends to your life, those that might see things in a quirkier way. I love the range of answers from our daughter (age 8) to the latest friend added to the table.....how risque you let it get is up to you and the ages of the players! - Social - Fun - Family Game - Group Game'
