Negative Scanner - film scanner, slide scanner

I bought this scanner a month ago to scan the several thousand slides I have taken over the past years. I'm not a professional photographer - my expectations were only to digitize my slides to the same quality as the photos I have been taking with my 7mp digital camera. After receiving the scanner (which set up easily) I did an extensive set of tests to determine the appropriate settings (resolution, compression, etc), and then set about scanning my slides.

Now that I am 2/3 done with the task I can say that it's working OK, but there are goods and bads. I have no experience with other film scanners so I can't say how this unit compares to others, but here's what I have learned:

* Many have complained about the flimsiness of the plastic slide holder. Mine has held up fine so far, but I can find no information anywhere about how I would get a replacement if I broke the one that came with the scanner, which concerns me a little.

* Epson's web site is not very helpful. They have a simple FAQ with some basic items, but nothing really helpful, and no discussion groups. You are on your own.

* As others have commented, the included software is pretty basic, but I think it gets the job done. It has at least 2 very annoying flaws, though. One is that every time I preview scan another set of 12 slides, it turns off the dust removal and/or digital ICE selection. This means that you need to remember to turn it back on with every scan, which I have forgotten to do some times. There appears to be a way of saving your settings, but even that gets reset on every scan, so is useless. Maybe there is a way to make this work right, but the sparse documentation yields no clues.

* Another software issue is its ability to recognize the vertical or horizontal orientation of slides. Mostly it does a really good job with this, but sometimes it guesses wrong, e.g. it will think a slide is vertical when it actually is horizontal. Usually this happens if the slide has a dark background. Unfortunately when it guesses wrong, it crops off the sides or the top/bottom of the picture, so you can't just rotate it 90 degrees. Most of the time when I notice a wrong guess I have been able to correct it by rotating the slide 90 degrees and re-previewing, but I have several slides where it simply insists on getting it wrong and the software provides no way to override this behavior. A related bad behavior occurs if you have a slide that has a bright rectangle on a dark background, e.g. a shot of TV screen - in that case, it tries to zoom in on part of the picture, cropping off much of it including even some of the light area. I can find no way to defeat this behavior, so apparently the only remedy is to crop this type of image manually, which is going to be very labor intensive.

* Another problem relates to a hardware design flaw that I am very surprised that no one has mentioned. After scanning my first several batches of slides and examining the results carefully, I went into a mode of scanning without taking the time to examine every resulting image. After scanning a LOT of slides, I started reviewing the results and was horrified to notice that on certain batches, there were 2 faint vertical lines (one green, one blue) down certain scans. I finally noticed that the lines seemed to be on 4 consecutive slides out of every 12 (the slide holder contains 12 slides), so that was a clue. Notice that the top of the scanner has a transparent slit down the middle - apparently this is a sexy feature so you can see where the scanner light is and watch its motion. Well, it also admits other light into the scanner, at least under certain ambient light conditions, ruining the scans of the 4 slides in the middle column. I fixed this by taping a piece of cardboard to the top of the scanner. And now I have to re-scan a lot of messed-up images.

* I really can't notice that the Digital ICE feature does anything except quadruple the amount of time it takes to scan each set of slides. I tried doing scans with it and without it, and can notice little difference. Not much of a problem, since I the Epson software de-selects the option to use it after each preview scan as mentioned above.

* I suppose it's not really a fault of the scanner, but watch out for dust! It's really important to blow off your slides before every scan, and also the scanner glass. Despite being really careful, I still have a big issue with dust. Would have been nice if Epson had included a brush and something to blow with (I got a squeeze bulb blower that helps a lot). When I am done with my scanning project I'm considering replacing the electronic air cleaner in my home with this unit, since it seems to be a dust magnet! :-)

* One last comment. This is not a general-purpose scanner, i.e. you really wouldn't want to use it as a document scanner, mainly because every time you want to use it, it needs to warm up for a minute. Fortunately I have another scanner for documents, and it works instantaneously.

It's possible that some of the items above are user error on my part, but with the meager documentation and web site, it's hard to develop a detailed understanding of the unit without a lot of experimentation, which might cause one to miss something. Your mileage might vary.

** LONG-TERM EXPERIENCE UPDATE 3/11/10:

The V700 is still working fine, after scanning at least 10,000 slides, color prints, color negatives and b&w negatives. I remain very satisfied with my purchase (I would probably upgrade my rating to 4-stars now), as it has done a lot of work for me, I've scanned a lot of stuff with good results, and it continues to work fine. In particular, I think that the V700 does a spectacular job scanning prints of any kind, and automatically recognizes where they are when you place multiple prints on the glass for a single scan - but see one of the notes below!

* None of the flimsy plastic holders has broken (yet), thank goodness. I handled them very carefully. Still worried about how I would get a replacement if needed.

* Something else I learned: The V700 recognizes each of the included film/slide holders automatically, and changes a variety of settings automatically depending upon which one it recognizes - like it or not. See next item.

* Besides my 35mm slides, I also have a large collection of "super slides" that were shot on 120 film. Even though these are mounted in standard 2x2 cardboard mounts, you cannot scan them in the slide holder, because each opening in that holder is in the shape of an "+" to allow for the possibility of a vertically- or horizontally-oriented 35mm slides. But since super slides are square and have much more film area that the rectangular 35mm slides, the holder blocks out part of each slide, making the holder unusable for such slides. Also, when you put the slide holder in, the scanner automatically assumes 35mm slides, and crops down automatically, thus throwing away part of each slide anyway.

Canon offers no additional holders as far as I can tell, so here's what I did: I used a different holder that would fit 4 2x2 objects, BUT - turned it 180 degrees on the scanner surface. This was necessary to fool the V700, which otherwise reads some coding on the bottom of the holder and then changes the settings automatically. I believe this holder is meant for raw 6x6 cm negatives, which obviously won't work for slides. Turning it 180 degrees prevented the V700 from reading the "coding" on the bottom of that holder, and allowed it to scan the whole page without changing any setting automatically. Next, I created a set of 4 identical marquees that matched the 4 slots on the holder, and saved them with a name so I could use them as a template over and over again. With this set-up, I scanned several thousand 120 super slides just fine. Again, really watch the dust.

* One more experience item: the V700 does NOT scan all the way to the left edge or the bottom edge of the glass - there seems to be a small gap near those 2 edges that is not scanned. (It does scan all the way to the top and right-hand edges.) I learned this the hard way when I was scanning prints. I started off by placing 4 - 6 prints on the glass for each scan, pushing each up to one of the edges to keep it squarely aligned. Eventually I noticed that I was missing a bit on a few of the edges, which I traced back to this problem. All works fine if you are aware of this issue. Blackberry Car Charger - pda car charger, ipod charger

Two problems keep me from rating this very inexpensive car USB charger higher:

1. The charger that I received doesn't appear to be the same charger pictured on the product description. (eg., completely different molded body, glass tube fuse instead of plastic-encased fuse.)

2. It won't charge my iPhone properly. After some testing with a multimeter, it seems the output is close to 6 VDC, despite being labeled as 5 VDC +/- 5%, which would be a max. voltage of 5.25 VDC.

Overall, it's not worthless. Other less sensitive USB-powered products may be able to be charged by this. Eforcity's Universal USB Car Charger Adapter

I bought two of these, both fell apart (literally) within several weeks of infrequent use. Even when they worked, they never worked reliably and required connstant twisting and turning and pushing to get a connection. The whole thing looked like they were put together by a child (no, I'm just talking figuratively and not implying what you think I'm implying about Chinese labor, which is a whole different issue). A gentle squeeze, the thing goes squeaky and shaky. Unlike most other car adapters, this one doesn't have a snugly fit into the cigarette lighter. It is just so wobbly everywhere. Avoid such low quality products to keep your life sane.

An update: I subsequently purchased a few Universal Mini USB Car Charger Adapters offered by Eforcity (search Amazon or eBay). What a difference. The Universal Mini USB Car Charger Adapters is exactly what this product should be made alike. Solid, compact, and reliable. Both are inexpensive Chinese made products, but one is total junk and other a gem.

This device works as expected - no issues at all.

I do think the body is bigger than it should be, and can be reduced by 50% or more, with essentially a "stub" containing the USB port.

Still this is priced right and works.

Pro:

-Works well with many devices

-Snugly fits in the cigarette lighter

-Light tells you if you have power

-GREAT PRICE!!!

-Although slightly bulky, it's great that it has no cord of it's own. When traveling I would be bringing my spare 3715WW Tungsten 5 cable (see my other review) anyway, so there's less tangly mess to deal with

Con:

-Slightly bulky... for it's size I think that it could have 2 connections so that 2 devices could be powered/recharged at one time

Bottom line: Highly recommended.

This thing works fine for charging my zune, but if I'm playing music while getting power from this, it puts a lot of noise into the signal. Enough noise to make me throw this thing away. If all you need it for is USB power without playing music, it'll work fine.

Pros: Inexpensive and eforcity is quick to ship. Fuse, easy to disassemble(easy to modify to work with new iPhone 3G/Samsung Moment/Rant). Works to charge a lot of USB connected devices(Phones,PDA,older iPods,Bluetooth wireless adapters, etc...).

Cons: Not compatible with all Phones or newer iPods. BUT there is a solution that requires soldering and two 100k Radio$hack resistors.

Overall impression: Good deal, decent build quality, easy to take apart to "fix/modify it" to get it working with newer iPods/iphones/cell phones.

Use this search term in google to find out how to modify this charger to work with a iPhone 3G/Nano 5th G

"iphone 3g USB Cigarette Lighter Socket Charger"

I got this device mainly so I can charge my iPhone with it. first time it worked great but then other time a message would appear on the iPhone saying that this device is not meant to work with the iPhone. It takes a few tries for it to charge. As this is mainly Apple's fault for creating more problems than solutions when working with products they do not sell them selves, I feel the manufacture of this charger should have placed a comment saying "May not work with apple products". In any case, with the rest of the products it works. fairly simple to use and does not weight much.

I should have read the reviews ! I SPECIFICALLY ordered this model (actually 3 of them!) BECAUSE the picture showed it had an easily accessed External fuse (mini-automotive style) - JUST like the model I bought from Harbor Freight for $3 (and then lost). I did try (for only a minute) to charge my LG EnV Touch using this - and the ORIGINAL USB cable that came with the phone, and it worked OK. I have not yet measured the output voltage, or checked the regulation. IF voltage is within 5%, and regulation is smooth, I will be happy, in spite of the lack of fuse. IF NOT, then I should have spent the $10 (3 units, including shipping) at Harbor Freight, or another Amazon vendor ... (update 8 Oct 2009) (1) I finally put a voltmeter on the output of this (not under load, just cut an old spare USB cable in half to get at the power wires), and measured the output to be 5.25 volts (within 5% of rated output). So, that is a GOOD thing, since other reviewers said some of the units they received output 6 volts (which could overheat or damage some devices). SO ... IF you get the same exact model I did, then hopefully they have the same voltage regulator chip inside, and it will work well for you. - Pda Car Charger - Ipod Charger - Cell Phone Car Charger - Car Electronics'

Video Cables - monitor cables, video cables

Don't waste your money on an expensive cable, this one works great. Using this cable give me better video on my tv than on my laptop. The cable has screws that hooked into the back of my tv, my laptop does not have a place for the screws to go in, but it fits perfectly into my vga port and have had no problems with the video. The only thing I have noticed to be slightly wrong is I could hear a little fuzziness from the audio port when no sound was going through the cable, although I have not noticed any noises since the 1st time I used it. The audio cable gives about 18" to connect from the vga cable, so you could connect the audio port from the vga port if it is on the other side of your computer. Excellent buy for the cost of the cable, I would buy this product again if I had to buy another one. 15' SVGA + 3.5m MM Stereo Black

I bought this to watch video from my computer on my TV. It has a PC video input and a mini jack audio input so this seemed like all I needed. The problem was that I am using a laptop and there is no "audio out" jack. Just plugging it into the headphone jack gives you analog out and the TV is expecting digital audio. So I had to go to Radio Shack and buy a couple of adapters to switch that end to RCA and hook it into my stereo. The end result is still about 5 times cheaper than buying a device that can stream Netflix and can do a lot more. I also now use the audio jack to feed my MP3 Walkman into my stereo.

I used this to connect my Visio flat screen to my computer for viewing pictures and for teaching with my kids. The cord plugs right into the back on the pc and into the RGB connection on the flat screen. The audio cord included plugs right into the headphone jack on the PC and right next to the RGB connection on the flat screen. Worked great the first time. Took a minute to realize I needed to sync the computer to the tv by hitting the Function key(FN) and the F8 key (CRT/LCD) on the pc, but after that the audio and video worked great.

I purchased this cable because the cable I had would no longer work when connecting my laptop to my Samsung tv. The tv did not recognize the computer. This cable works wonderfully and it is nice to have the audio cable integrated with the VGA cable. Worked easily the first time I connected it. Now I can stream netflix to my tv! The audio cable is 24" long from the VGA cable, plenty of length to get to the audio out connection on my laptop.

Great cable. Split my PC (VISTA and XP) with my LCD SONY BRAVIA. My PC Samsung has darken a bit but still very good. No install needed. Only had this for less than 30 days.. hope it last!! Hooked up with sound and video.

I saw on here that the connected audio cord was about 18" which would easily fit across my 14.3" lenovo laptop. The picture also makes the audio cord look quite long. However, I measured the cord to be a mere 11", which means it can't reach the headphone jack on my computer. This means I have to go out and buy a seperate cord, even though I already paid the extra $$$ for it with this vga cord.

Even though the video is a 10/10, I am dissatisfied with the purchase overall because I don't get the audio I paid for. - Monitor Cables - Monitor Cable - Video Cables - Computer Cables'

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

I've tried tons of supposed "cures" before - Zelnorm never worked for me, and neither have over-the-counter medication. Special teas and other foods just made me even sicker, and I finding meals every night that wouldn't leave me in pain was quite the chore. Align was a last-ditch effort for me, and I am absolutely floored by it. Within a couple of days of taking it, I noticed a difference, and a week later, I'd never felt better since I was a teenager. With the exception of chocolate (alas!), all of my previous trigger foods no longer affect me. If I were a religious person, I'd almost want to call this a miracle. If you have IBS or other digestive conditions, and your doctor does NOT seem to really take you seriously (mine kept attributing my condition to anxiety, when anyone who knows me knows that I am extremely laid-back and stress-free), then you should definitely try Align.

I am 26 and have been dealing with IBS-D since I was 18. I have seen many different doctors & tried many different approaches to help in reducing my symptoms. As there is no real cure for IBS, I obviously hadn't had much luck with many of these approaches such as antispasmodics, increased fiber, etc. My only quick fix relief would come from taking Immodium. As many IBS sufferers experience, it has significantly altered my quality of life over the years from avoiding certain social functions to even avoiding food altogether. The hardest part was having to watch other people, such as my boyfriend, also constantly having to deal with "my stomach issues" as a result of needing to flee from different places once an episode set in. There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when an episode would occur...sometimes just thinking about having to eat while outside the comfort of my home would bring one on. Yet, certain foods such as coffee, dairy, and alcohol would almost always trigger an episode. As a teacher, I'm not able to use the bathroom whenever needed, so I tried Align after reading the positive reviews here. (I did try Digestive Advantage first, but with little success.) I am currently on week four & I am feeling better then I have ever felt before. I started having one, normal BM a day within four days of taking align & the urgency to constantly have to go within seconds of eating has subsided. I have progressively been getting better with each day-with only some bloating the first several days. In the past 4 weeks, I only had one flare up & many of my trigger foods have caused me no trouble. I know that IBS is some how affected by our body's response to our nervous system, so it can not necessarily "cure" that mental aspect of IBS..you'll need to build confidence in the product and what it does. I would absolutely tell you to try this product if you are an IBS-D sufferer. It just may work in reducing your symptoms and giving you back a better quality of life like it has done for me. I wouldn't normally go out of my way to write something like this...but I feel it is important for people to see this because I know just how debilitating IBS can be for many.

I purchase this product for my 86 year old Mother who was hospitalized with chronic diarrhea and this product has certainly helped her. I recommend it highly. I would like to see the price drop some but it is an excellent product for anyone with digestive/bowel problems.

I have been taking this product for two months on the recommendation of my doctor. I have been having major gastrointestinal problems over the past year and a half and I have tried every diet, medication and procedure you can think of to try and diagnose and eliminate the problem. Align is sort of a last ditch effort. Oddly enough, I feel better overall (more energy, less anxiety over my symptoms, etc.) but the actual gastrointestinal upsets haven't gone away, although they may have lessened in severity. I'm going to give Align one more month and then go off it to see if my improvements are due to the probiotics or something else.

For anyone who's either taking Align or considering it, you may want to check out Dr. Eamonn Quigley's new booklet, Probiotics and Digestive Health. There's entire Chapter( Chapter 5) which discusses Bifantis in detail and also provides excellent studies and research on it.

In addition, there's a complete Q&A section in the back of the book on Bifantis.

After trying many Probiotics, Align has helped my IBS symptoms considerable. I would highly recommend taking it.

i have been using this product for one month now and could not be happier with the results. for years, i have experienced daily anxiety when i would go out shopping or out to eat with friends because my stomach was unpredictable. now i go out and i don't even think about it. what a blessing! if you are reading this because you have stomach issues, give it a try and i truly hope you have the same results.

I was very surprised that Amazon had this. I would not have thought I could find it here but Align's web site listed all the people who had it, so I compared prices. Amazon was the cheapest then, I don't know if they will continue. I could have had free shipping too but I didn't order soon enough and needed to continue taking it without a gap. This product has been extremely helpful to me. I have had IBS symptoms for quite some time in my life. And recently I had some major medical problems with my stomach. 11,000 $ plus of fancy testing and we are all left scratching our heads. I was given several align trial packs by a doctor to see if it would make a difference. I started them over spring break so that any side effects (the gas you read about) would not make me miss classes. I'm glad I did because I was so tired that first week. I had a lot of gas and because my body was so weak anyways, I just slept a lot. But I noticed the gas was different!! There were lots of little bubbles as opposed to large pressures building with sudden release. I have now been taking align for several months and have continued to see consistent improvement. There were a couple instantaneous changes like the gas, but you really have to stick with this product. I have more energy now as well. +++ I have only had one time of IBS like symptoms in the last couple months!! My patience paid off. For the price, this is soooo worth it. To be complete, I should say that I also started working out on average 4.5 days a week (when I started I could only do about 6 min on an elliptical), and I take pepcid. I have a lot of nasal allergies and the pepcid I think helps my gut not react... besides being an anti-acid it is an antihistamine. I also take vit D. So, that is my complete set up. I was doing everything except the Align, for a month before starting it with a little improvement. I feel like my improvement approximately tripled when I started taking align. I will not cease taking it unless there is a crazy good reason.'

Motorola Cordless Phone - dect cordless phone, cordless telephones

I have had this unit for a few months now and have been very pleased with it. In fact, I'm looking for the add-on units to populate other rooms with the same handsets. Call quality has been superb with no interference. Until I read some of the other reviews, I'd never noticed issues with the base weight and ring tones - neither has been an issue for me. Speakerphone works well with ample volume on both ends. All-in-all, I have been very pleased with the L301. Motorola DECT 6.0 Cordless Phone with Caller ID (L301)

I needed a basic no answering machine cordless as my landline backup for my cell phone until I can get a femtocell in my 'country estate'. This was inexpensive, looked classy rather than tacky, and was by a good brand name. It's no larger than it needs to be. I'm disappointed it doesn't wall mount, but not surprised as this seems to be a feature that only I still want in a phone. The sound quality is acceptable and the range appears adequate for me. After 20 years of cordless phone technology and a vast number of upgrades (Gigahertz, Dect, whatever) one might think that the sound quality would be outstanding if not perfect at this point, but there is still some background static, alas. Voices are always intelligible however and there isn't any noticeable distortion. The handset is nice - it fits well in the hand, is a nice size and weight, and the buttons and operation feel quality. The base is also nicely designed, but since it doesn't have a fixed mount on any surface, it is too light to feel solid when the handset is picked up or returned. I opened it up and packed the available empty space with modeling clay and this made it nearly perfect.

I concur with most of what the others have said, both positive and negative but my phone has an extremely high pitched noise - think dog whistle - that lasts for a couple of minutes at the beginning of a phone conversation but then usually disappears, it drives me bonkers. It isn't super loud, you can still have a conversation but enough that it feels like me ears are ringing. Lastly I don't find the volume sufficient, and yes it is turned up. I am not old, or have hearing difficultly.

This phone is easy to use, has great voice quality, long battery life and looks great. We needed a replacement for a previous cordless phone and didn't want to pay a lot. We've had this phone off the base for 2-3 days and the battery didn't die. We like the added ability to add additional handsets. The phone comes with a variety of ringers including pleasant melodies that won't wake our baby when someone calls. The screen is bright and the text is clearly legible.

The package arrived on the date specified with no problems.

The phone works very well and is simple to set up and use. Read in a previous review that the ring tones available were not very pleasent sounding. We didn't find that to be true at all. They were far better then what's on our cell phone and a great improvment over what our regular wired telephone sounds like. That one has no ring tone choices at all and when it rings it exactly matches the telephone rings we hear on TV drama showes. We aren't always sure if it's the TV or our telephone that's ringing! That problem is nonexistent with our new Motorola Cordless. We can hear that thing ring all over the house no matter what's going on.

The battery life between charges so far seems to be much better then we remember of Cordless phones we've had in the past and the sound quality is noticeably better then our last cordless in particular. That phone was terrible both in sound quality and battery life.

Just got this phone today. Very simple to use and setup. Didn't even need to refer to the instructions. Lightweight and comfortable to hold. Large, clear display is easy to read even without my glasses on. Well worth the price.

I just wanted to offer a comment about Motorola phones; a lesson I learned the hard way.

I bought a Motorola cordless phone H101. The phone worked fine for 6 months and then just stopped working. Motorola has engaged a company called "Encompass" to process returns for at least some models of their cordless phones, including the H101. This was a brand new Motorola cordless phone and I was surprised to learn Motorola itself was not handling problems. Encompass gave me the run around for a month after I mailed the phone back for replacement - we can't find a record of your incident, we can't confirm we received the phone back (even though I sent them a copy of the US certified mail receipt), etc... I truly view Encompass as a criminal enterprise after my experience dealing with them. I have no doubt they make money every time they wear down a customer seeking a replacement phone. I gave up - $30 is not worth the aggravation or time. I bought a Panasonic and have been happy so far.

I contacted Motorola corporate to get help and they didn't even reply.

That Motorola would associate itself with such a sham outfit as Encompass is disappointing. I have owned several Motorola phones in my life but I will never buy another. How am I to know that if something goes wrong I won't have to deal with an outfit like Encompass??? Fool me once....

I've had my share of phones in my life, but this one is the best in my opinion! I love the fact that while you are on hold, you can set the phone on "Speaker" (from the handset!) and put it down instead of holding it for what seems to be an eternity until someone returns! The sound quality is good and can be turned Up or Down, even when you are on a call! Many different features make this the phone to have! Redial, Address Book, Different Ringtones to choose from, etc.! Well worth the price!

I have used a phone like this in the past as my brother has one that is part of a system. The sound quality is very good. It has all of the features I like in a phone. It is very easy to use once you get used to how it is set up. - Cordless Telephones - Motorola Cordless Phone - Motorola - Dect Cordless Phone'

Extender - range extender, wireless range extender

I bought this hoping to expand wireless coverage at my church. We currently have a single Netopia 3347 DSL modem that has okay range. I was looking for a product that would provide much more range and coverage and work with the existing setup.

After opening the package and following the quick-start instructions, I was able to get the Hawking Smart Repeater to "see" the existing wifi connection. It was able to connect quite easily. This is where things got tricky ... the Hawking Smart Repeater then proceeded to create its own separate wifi connection with a different SSID, a different encryption method, and a different subnet.

The end result was that my laptop would see two different wifi SSID connections - the original connection to the Internet, and the repeated one. This configuration technically worked, but it wasn't what I wanted. What I wanted was one seamless area of strong wifi coverage.

So on the Hawking device, I tried changing the SSID and encryption of the repeated wireless connection to match the original connection. And that's where things got really ugly. The Hawking Smart Repeater still tried to act as a DHCP host on its own subnet. I tried disabling the DHCP, activating bridge mode, and putting it on the same subnet. The Hawking Smart Repeater then failed to connect to the Internet. It could still see the original wifi network, but was unable to access the Internet. I tried making a few more changes, and all of them were unsuccessful. Most frustrating however, was that after activating bridge mode, it became nearly impossible to access the web configuration page. Nearly all attempts to access it via the repeater's local ip address ended in errors, but it would sporadically let me see the page. This would get my hopes up that I could make changes, but when I clicked the 'submit' button, it would disappear again.

Even worse, because it was built for the outdoors, there was NO Reset button. The instruction manual said a hard reset could be performed by holding the reset button down for 10 seconds, but doesn't indicate where this button may be located. I think they used the same instruction manual from an indoor version of the smart repeater.

Anyway, I gave up and decided to send it back to Amazon.

Pros:

-STRONG wireless antennae. While I had the internet connection working with two separate SSIDs, my laptop could see and communicate with the box from good distances and through walls.

-Tough exterior box. It says it's built for the Outdoors and it's true. The housing seems to be pretty robust.

Cons:

-Creates a separate wifi network. Attempts to make one seamless network were unsuccessful.

-Expensive.

-NO RESET Button. VERY FRUSTRATING.

I can see this device working well if two neighbors wanted to share one internet connection. One neighbor would host the internet connection, and the second one could use this device to pick up the signal and create his own separate network.

The back of the box also showed other possible uses: sharing/rebroadcasting an internet connection at an RV park, and also for sharing/rebroadcasting internet for boats in a harbor.

For those situations, this device would be great. If you're trying to expand the coverage of your current network and have the same settings across, this is not the device to buy. Hawking Hi-Gain Outdoor Wireless-300N Dual Radio Smart Repeater

I have been using this for about 2 weeks now and it works great. I am boosting a signal thats about 200 feet away and its great. I have tried several repeaters and have never been able to get them to connect from this distance.

i already returned one , after abusing myself with both the inside support guy and the nice folks in India , who regrettably cannot speak English ... and then really do not have the solutions...

the enclosure is fantastic....

the concept of two radios is fantastic..... theoretically to cut down the "store and forward" of the hawking range extender. That device worked with other brands but this thing would connect with a linksys but would not pass internet traffic....

I was on over two hours with India,,, the for the first unit... which they said was defective ...

but I could not believe they were all bad.... so off to Micro Center where I bought another,,, then spent over an hour with the English speaking "guy" in California.... who advised me after not solving my problem that he spent way too much time with me,,,,,

For and outdoor situation the enclosure is the perfect way to go ,,,,too bad I can only get it to pass 400k,,,, with a notebook next to it receiving 20MB from the SAME source..... the latency I got down ,,,but I cannot get it to allow any decent thru put,,,, Don't know if it's the hardware or their software but it is soooo close,,,,too bad they missed the target,,,,

I WILL BET THEY GET MANY RETURNED AND BLAME THE 'IGNORANT' CONSUMER....

AMAZON SHOULD STOP SELLING THIS THING AS IT IS CURRENTLY A BAD IMPLEMENTATION.

as soon as I can get up on that remote silo I will but up a ddwrt LINKSYS box

I'VE ONLY HAD TO GO UP THERE 23 TIMES TO HARDWIRE TO THE REPEATER ,,

,TO RESET IT .

Previously I used the hawking "range extender", successfully for over a year,

but the store and forward technique introduced several issues which this repeater should have solved. This system is over a mile with very BIG antennas,,,

Jumbo Display - dual alarm clock, smartset

My husband and I went through 4 other alarm clocks before we settled on this one. This alarm clock provided everything that was missing in each of our previous alarm clocks. It has a large easy to read from across the room display (but can be dimmed or shut off and then on again w/a wave of the hand), has two separate alarm settings which you can set for weekdays only, weekends only, and weekdays and weekends also w/buzzer,or radio which each of the two alarms can be set to individual preference. Both alarms are displayed constantly underneith the time (which is suprisingly reasuring feature to have) and my husband likes that the alarm shut off button (radio on/off) is a big round button off to the very left side of the alarm which allows him to turn the alarm off every morning without first putting his glasses on and then hunting for the off button. I love it that once you tap the off button, it turns the alarm off for the day and then automatically resets itself to wake me up again the next day. I also have the option to not shut the alarm off and listen to the radio for an hour as I get ready for work, after which time it will shut itself off until the next day again. All in all a very good buy and well worth the money!! Emerson Radio Jumbo Triple Display Dual Alarm AM/FM Clock Radio with SmartSet Technology

I'm a bit neurotic about these things, and spent a LONG TIME researching clock radios online before settling on this one. It has ALMOST everything I could want.

The best feature is that the times for the two alarms are prominently displayed on the screen, all the time. No more compulsive checking before bed to make sure that the alarm is set for the right time. I also like that you can pre-set each alarm to ring on just weekdays, just weekends, or every day; if you keep to a regular schedule, you really don't need to change anything from day to day.

Regarding the snooze feature: I was a bit worried that the "wave sensor" would be too sensitive, and that I would end up snoozing when I didn't mean to, but so far this really hasn't been a problem. You need to wave your hand pretty deliberately for it to snooze. Also, while you're snoozing, there's a blinking light to remind you that the alarm is not turned off, which is very helpful.

Regarding the tuner: I was surprised to see that this radio has an old analog dial-style radio tuner, rather than a digital tuner. It makes it a bit tricky to find the station you want, but it does tend to stay put much better than other radios. My last one would drift pretty heavily.

There are really just a few things I'm not crazy about:

1. The snooze timer is not adjustable. Each snooze is 9 minutes. Personally, I prefer 7. Many other clock radios on the market today have adjustable snooze, but not this one.

2. No atomic clock. It uses that "SmartSet" business, which is basically just factory-set with a very strong battery. But if it does ever get the wrong time, you'll need to set it by hand. Adding atomic clock capability would make it just about perfect.

3. No digital tuning, but as I said above, it's really not a big deal.

4. The display doesn't prominently show the weekday/weekend option for each alarm. Let's say alarm #1 is set for 7:00, on weekdays only. The display will always show the 7:00 part, but you need to press a button to see which days the alarm is set for (weekdays, weekends, or both). It would be nice to add another indicator -- a light meaning "this alarm WILL go off tomorrow", for example. If you don't change the settings too often though, this isn't much of an issue.

Overall, this radio is highly recommended!

This item was purchased with three needs in mind. First, my fiance and I needed a dual alarm clock. Second, we needed one with large enough numbers for him to read without his glasses. Happily, he is able to read this one easily. Lastly, we needed one with a LOUD alarm sound, or at least one that is adjustable to a loud volume. Unfortunately, this alarm would probably only suffice for the lightest of sleepers (which neither of us are).

Being able to see, without moving any switches, what time the alarms are set for is nice. I just wish the alarm would wake us up when it goes off. I guess we'll be buying another new alarm clock.

I got this clock as a gift, and could care less whether it sets itself or not, I've been setting clocks since I could walk, not a big deal. Most older clocks have battery back ups, so this is not a new feature.

The thing that makes this clock worth the price even without the smart set is the alarm settings. Dual alarm, and can be set for weekdays, weekends, and a couple other settings. So if you are like me, and have different schedules on the weekends you can set one for the weekdays, and one for weekends. bright display, suprisingly good sound, a good everyday clock, worth the price, whether it sets itself or not. Setting itself is a nice feature though. As many others have explained, this is not an atomic clock, nor does it advertise itself to be. Yes, it is a "Self Setting" Clock, pre-set at the factory defaulted to Eastern Standard time in the USA (Mine was 2 minutes behind my actual atomic clock). The set up is easy enough, plug it in, it set's itself, then press the time zone up or down for the time zone you are in, then forget about it for several years. This new version does have the correction for New daylight savings time settings (2007 versions). Again, check this out, even my mother (who is technologically challenged) loves this clock. - Smartset - Dual Alarm Clock - Clock Radio - Alarm Clock Radio'
