Energy Efficient - energy efficient, 8 port

Recently we have installed network storage devices, and started to run backups and multi-media services on our home LAN (local area network). As a result the load on our network increased substantially. We decided to upgrade from fast ethernet to gigabit. Due to the arrangement of devices, we have several 8 port switches connected to a larger 24 bit switch which I guess is the backbone of our LAN.

When shopping for gigabit switches, the Trendnet 8 port gigabit greennet switch came up as not only a low cost, but also a low power switch. We purchased several and have been using them for almost half a year.

These switches are silent (there is no fan), and very low power (on my Killowatt meter they always show 0 watts), and very fast. They have limited support for jumbo packets (I forget the exact number, but its around a jumbo packet size of 7-9K).

This is a good solution as a low power, silent, gigabit switch that runs cool and is low cost. The switch is unmanaged, but does have status indicator lights. You will see if you are getting fast ethernet or gigabit speeds on each port. We have had no trouble with these switches. TRENDnet 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit GREENnet Standard Switch (8 x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation, Auto-MDIX Gigabit Ethernet Ports) TEG-S80G (Black Metal)

This switch is solid. In 3 months, I've had no problems with this Trendnet switch.

Compare to my netgear crashes, gets into reboot loops, etc even after power brick and switch replacement.

The Trendnet switch runs cooler than the netgear counterpart.

The Trendnet, like the NetGear, has a metal case for better EMI control. The netgear case is just slightly thicker, which should provide better in-case ventilation.

The Trendnet switch has ports/power on the back, and activity/connection LEDs on the front. Because of this, it makes for a much more tidy desk, and easier to see link lights.

We'll see how this is doing when it's a year, or 18 months old, but so far, it's power-on durability exceeds the competition.

NOTE: This is an unmanaged switch. 10/100/1000 line speed, auto-crossover. There is no monitoring port, no web management, no SNMP, no IP sharing, and no routing.

This is a low cost, and well designed device. I highly recommend it.

This switch is well built with a metal case, performs well, and is economical. I did lots of benchmarks and found that I got maximum speeds while doing multiple concurrent large inter-computer file transfers. I repeated some of the tests while bypassing the switch to see if there was a change in speed and there was none, so this switch kept up with whatever I could throw at it. If you want more speed, chances are you will gain more with better cables/plugs/jacks/etc. rather than looking for a faster switch.

I also used a Kill-A-Watt meter to see how much energy this uses. The amount was so low that it took days to get meaningful readings, and this will cost pennies a year and electricity is not cheap where I live. Also, the switch is economically priced. This switch caused my network diagnostic to misreport cable quality as poor, but although some utilities might give you false readings, your connection will not suffer.

I read elsewhere that this switch is not compatible with WOL (wake on LAN/magic packet) and the person who posted that got the information from Trendnet support. It turns out that this works PERFECTLY with WOL as long as your computer's port is set to auto negotiation. In other words, if there's any limitation, it's with the quality of tech support, not with this switch.

The only minor negatives are that the printing next to the LEDs is not on both sides, so it will appear upside-down if this is wall mounted, making it awkward to keep track of port numbers. Also, the slots for wall mounting could have been bigger to accommodate larger screws. The documentation is minimal, but this is pretty much plug and play.

UPDATE Jan 2011. I have read comments from customers who have had problems using multiple switches of this model on the same network. I have three of them. One is connected with approximately 25 meters of Cat-5e cable to another on a different floor in my home. The cable run is UTP, about half vertical, and half horizontal though an attic with no shielding (except distance) from other cables such as power cables. A third switch is connected with approximately 8 inches of the same type cable, allowing me to have more ports in that location. Benchmarks of file transfers will not give a true picture, since the weakest link (hard drive speed, overhead from data encapsulation, switches, network cards, wall jacks, drivers, cable, etc.) will be the limiting factor. All other parts of the chain will perform at least as well as the benchmark suggests.

I tried copying about 450 GB of relatively large and barely compressible data coming from images of blu-ray and DVD sources. Transferring through all three switches, full length of the cable, etc. gave me transfer speeds of about 96MB/sec. Presumably, the hard disk arrays are the limiting factors in my system, but the switches clearly had no trouble with those sustained speeds. I used Windows 7 drag and drop over a network, which is not among the most efficient methods. A series of smaller files such as JPEGs gave me "speeds" closer to 15MB/sec, which really means that the speed over the wire was probably about the same, but a large amount of the data was overhead encapsulation.

Although it's likely that the switch was not the limiting factor, it's clear that users who are getting poorer performance have other factors that limit performance, making it impossible to say that the switches are the cause of their performance issues. A direct run of cable from one of the computers to the other, bypassing all three switches, would show if there were any increase in performance, thus showing if the switches themselves (or something related to plugs, cables, or jacks) caused the problems. But the speeds I got from several such tests were consistent, and higher than what I would have expected given that I used Windows drag and drop over a network. - Switch - 8 Port - Gigabit Switch - Energy Efficient'

Audio Extension Cords - audio, extension cable

I purchased this extension cord to listen to music from my PC at work. When I opened the package I discovered that the end that plugs into the PC was bent and the receiving end that the headphones plug into was slightly too large for a 3.5 mm input. The result was that my headphones kept disconnecting from the extension cord whenever I moved. Reading other reviews, this seems to be a common flaw in this product. Shipping back to the seller makes a more expensive purchase than buying the other extension cord available at Amazon. Save yourself time and money, buy the Maxell. Cables To Go 13787 3.5 mm Male/Female Stereo Audio Extension Cable (6 Feet, Black)

This is exactly as it is described. The cord was actually more sturdy and thicker than I expected - which is a nice bonus because they can get damaged sometimes. There was absolutely no sound degradation from this to my headphones - sounds great! Both ends are very sturdy and have a solid connection. This wasn't the cheapest extension (only one was cheaper) however, this one had MUCH better reviews. For the couple bucks I spent on it - it was money well spent. Highly recommended.

The connections, both at the plug and the jack, are not built to spec and are quite loose in all of the headphone jacks and headphones I've tried. Any movement of the cable causes the connection points to slip and slide, causing one or both channels to drop out or cause static to be heard.

Very disappointing and the cable is going into the garbage because it would cost more than I paid originally to return it.

The only reason i bought these cables were because of the price. I got these at exactly the same time i got my new headphones (Sennheiser HD-555) and when using these, there is a slightly noticable drop volume. If you are just looking for an extension and don't care too much about sound quality, these are great for the price, but if you want to keep the sound as clear as possible, invest in some higher quality cables

This cable does its job, unlike some 3.5mm M to F extension cables you buy only to find that only one side works. It worked on the first try and the cable is thick.

It was cheap, too! I bought it for $5.77 in early December 2007; now I see the price has dropped to $2.72.

The cable I received does not work properly. The left and right channels are crossed.

I noticed this problem when I was watching a movie on my computer, and after some trouble shooting, I discovered that the cable was the problem.

These cables have some serious problems. I bought four, and they all reverse the left and right channels. How is that even possible if they're mass produced? For people who care about the stereo image using headphones, that's not acceptable. You can always reverse your headphones or ear buds, but you shouldn't have to.

One of them also has intermittent sound in one channel if you move the cable around.

So they are not great cables. I get the impression that these are the ones that failed quality control at the factory so they're unloading them at cost. - Audio - Extension Cable - Cable - Headphones'

Ipod Accessory

My new car has an AUX input jack so I bought this cable to use my mp3 player (Creative Muvo) with the speakers. It works seamlessly and excellently. Shipping was fast and I'm very happy with the product. InCarCables Car Stereo Ipod/mp3 Auxiliary Aux-in Input Cable 3.5mm (4ft/1.2m)

I purchased these cables to connect my iPhone to my Car speakers using Aux. Input and I am really pleased with the build and quality of these cables. Definitely worth spending few more bucks than buying any ordinary cable.

This particular wire turned out to be exactly what I needed to connect my SanDisk Sansa Clip+ 2 GB MP3 Player (Black) to the car stereo through the AUX port.

It's got the following going for it:

- Right size - 4 ft. seems to be the ideal size with the MP3 player placed under the dashboard.

- Good sound quality.

- Not-too-cheap looking connectors. And the grey-black style happens to match my car's interior.

- Price is not too bad. Not exactly cheap for what I got but, given free shipping, it's tolerable.

- There seems to be some customer support from vendor. InCarCables included a postcard with the shipment, offering to replace defective cables and even to ship the right cable upon emailing them if they sent you the wrong one by mistake.

Overall, it's the best value on this length/quality I found at Amazon at the time I ordered. I was inclined to award it 4 star because the price is a little high but, given the nice customer support commitment, I'm upgrading my rating to a 5-star. We should always encourage vendors that value their customers and promise to stand behind their product.

I looked around at a few cheapy cables and ended up getting this cable. I'm glad I did. It's really good quality and use it in my Escape through the AUX input with a few year old iPod Nano. The length is just right and I can let it lay in my seat or it is long enough for others to hold and use if necessary. Only had a short time but the sound is much better than my normal radio using this cable and iPod.

This cable works just great. I use it in my car to hook up my MP3 player to my car stereo system. Sound reproduction is as good, if not better, than headphones. So, the cable is definitely sending enough signal in sufficient detail and strength from my MP3 player to the MP3 socket in my R32's glove box.

I have two slight gripes. First, the cable is quite thick and makes it difficult to close the glove box door. Consequently, the door surround pinches the cable which I hope won't break it over time. Second, the free shipping from InCarCables is great, but you get what you pay for. Flimsy packaging. My cable arrived in a thin plastic envelope. It was absolutely fine, but could so easily have been damaged in transit. Personally, I'd have been happy to pay a few extra bucks for a padded envelope or a small cardboard box for the packaging.

Overall, don't be fooled into buying massively expensive cables thinking that's the only way you're going to get quality sound. This cable works just great. You'll see! Or rather hear!

The cable looks like it's excellent quality, but poorly designed. The head is too big if you have a case on the iphone. I'm giving it 2 stars because what good is an excellent quality cable if you can't plug it in all the way?

Update 3/31/11: Designing a cable to fit a myriad of devices (with and without cases) is imperative. I have purchased multiple wires since this one that all fit just fine because the designers gave it some forethought. The designers of this one didn't. Therefore, two stars.'

Rotary Tool - dremel, rotary tool

I found this too here on amazon. Looks cheap, but the reviews were good, so i thought i'd give it a shot. Works great for Xbox 360 case cutting, i was able to get into cutting a window for my HDD, and it took some time, but, i did it. Also works for cutting the case. Keep a firm grip, or it will fall out of your hands, it vibrates like CRAZY. Good tool WEN 2303 Mini Rotary Tool Kit

This rotary tool is pretty well underpowered for doing any cutting unless it is balsa wood. I don't like that the plug is a giant transformer and it is pretty cheaply made. The case is a plus, it actually seems pretty durable. The WEN Mini Rotary Tool Kit would probably be pretty nice for crafts, but definitely is no match for a real Dremel tool when trying to cut bolts or grind rust.

good for beginner hobbyist. I use this for building foam plane kits. cutting wheels are not the best but only okay but for the price it still beats the famous name brand. bought two of these - good gift for plane or model builders. lets you get into tiny places (ie put holes or cuts into CA hinges to make them more flexible)

I bought this exact tool in stores, and I found that although the accessories are nice, it doesn't have enough power. I'm not talking about drill your butt off power, I'm just saying things like using a grinder to sharpen a knife, or engraving wood with steady hands. It simply stops if you push too hard. Also, it doesn't allow you to get a good grip if you don't have really small hands. And last but not least, after awhile of using it, if you use the stop button to keep it from running, it can strip. - Crafts - Tools - Dremel - Rotary Tool'

Home Entertainment Projectors

This was an upgrade for me from a 720p, DLP projector (Mitsubishi HD1000u). Initial impressions are very positive, based on about 10 hours of viewing & tweaking. Very quiet, and plenty bright running in low power mode. The high resolution (1920 X 1080) approaches that for a typical 2k digital cinema, so my 145" diagonal screen, viewed from about 15 feet distance, provides a very pleasing movie experience. That said, the increase in resolution from 720p is an incremental step, so it is not the be all and end all of image quality in projectors. More specifically the source material you feed it is what really brings out the quality. Many HD feed materials (from cable or satellite) don't ever approach the inherent resolution of the projector, so at this point only blu-ray source material will really give the utmost in high resolution detail (and not even all disks, depending on the original mastering, etc.). Black levels are similar to my previous DLP projector, so if you are obsessed with having pitch black star fields, you should opt for a pricier DLP or LCD projector, which may more closely approach jet black in those situations. I don't worry too much about this aspect, reminding myself that even film projectors don't provide jet black when the screen goes blank, so the HD20 actually matches the real cinema experience more closely (how's that for rationalizing why a cheaper projector is better!) . At this price level (<$1000) it is hard to imagine a bigger bang for the buck in terms of image quality. Finally, I highly recommend you check out www.avsforum.com , where there is an extensive discussion thread about this and competing projectors. Optoma HD20 High Definition 1080p DLP Home Theater Projector (Grey)

I first wrote this review on another site, and now that I've had more time with this projector I have added and changed a few things and am reposting the review on Amazon. I think more people will look to Amazon when purchasing this projector, especially since the other site is not stocking it anymore. Hopefully this review helps those of you who are on the edge about purchasing this projector.

Pros: Good looking, gloss-white finish. Low-noise fan on normal-bulb mode. 4000 hours lamp life on econo is greater then most projectors! Good enough to use in bright mode to use with lights turned on in the room. In the dark, it looks simply amazing!

1080p content looks very good. Blu-rays played from a PS3 (or other blu-ray player) look awesome. I watched Kung-Fu Panda and was "wowed" by what you can notice on a much larger screen. I just watched Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen on it last night and I was amazed at the details and I noticed things I didn't even notice when I saw it in IMAX. This might have been because in IMAX you have such an insanely huge screen that you miss some things you might not have noticed before since you have to actually turn your head to look at the entire screen. Still, blu-ray content is amazing to see with this projector. I find it very hard to believe you can buy this for under $1000.

Video games look awesome. It works well with PS3 and 360 consoles. You get a huge advantage over other players when you can see them off in the distance before they could actually see you on a normal HDTV. This of course all depends on the size of the screen you use. I'm using a 92" diagonal white screen by EliteScreens. Not the greatest of screens but will get me by for a year or two until I get the funds for a good, fixed screen.

When using my PS3 with my tv I set the RGB color-spectrum to limited range in the display options on the PS3. On the tv, with the setting on full it would be far too dark and black out way too much shadow detail. On this projector you can turn on full-range and make use of the entire spectrum and it will give you better blacks and whites this way. If you put this projector on the bright pre-set setting (not high lamp mode) then you can blind yourself by the whites this thing is capable of in the dark. Bright setting should really only be used when you have a lot of ambient light to fight with. Otherwise the Cinema, Reference, or your own custom settings with the help of a calibration disc is probably best.

There are lot's of options for adjusting brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc. Everything you find on current HDTV's seems to be a setting you can change here. I personally find cinema mode is about perfect for use in dark environments where you can shut off all the light and enjoy a movie. Sharpness is used differently on this projector then it is on many HDTV's. With my tv I took the sharpness down to zero, because all it was doing was adding pixels to make the picture appear sharper and it would actually take away from the realism of the picture. On this projector the default value is 7 and if you lower it you are actually softening the picture and going negative with the sharpness effect. I found the sweet spot to be 10. At the value of 10 I get extremely sharp, crisp looking text in all my games and the picture looks better at that setting then at the default of 7. Anything below 7 would turn too soft and look blurred... like looking through a water covered windshield.

The Optoma features automatic shut-off which you can adjust. By default I believe it is turned off. I set mine for 15 minutes. This feature will automatically turn off the projector after no signal is detected for "xx" amount of minutes. Very useful if you are not the only one using the projector and have fears of friends/family leaving it turned on.

Cons: I have been used to using a Samsung 46" LN46A650 model tv, and then going to this, there is a very noticeable difference in black level. You will not get the deep blacks with this projector that you can on a good HDTV, but thankfully it doesn't ruin the experience. Black level detail is there, which is good, it just does not produce an inky-black. It's more of a very dark shade of gray. I messed around with the Digital Video Essentials blu-ray for the contrast/brightness adjustments for a while. I was not able to get the entire line-chart to display. Either the whites would get too washed out and too bright, or the darks would get too dark and force the white sections to get dark. The projector seemed about correct with out-of-the-box settings on cinema.

I did not mess around with deeper menu's such as the gamma, and film modes, or try changing the colors yet. I'm not experienced at self-calibrating, so don't take my word for it, but I could not get the contrast portion much better then it already is out-of-the-box.

Auto-focus would have been a nice option. It's not a big deal if you get this projector mounted and won't have to keep moving it. You can just find the right spot and leave it there, and it should be fine. On that note, if you are planning to leave this on a coffee table it will probably work alright. At first, I tried to shelf-mount this projector to save having to buy a ceiling mount. I had it about 5 feet above ground-level and I could not get a picture I was happy with. I had to angle it way down by rotating the back legs so they were fully extended and then adding a couple slim-cd cases to raise the back even further. I adjusted keystone all the way and it was still off and looked like a trapezoid. Unless you plan on using this within 3 feet of the floor, I would expect to be ceiling mounting this baby! There's your warning to anyone wondering about this.

None of my cons knock a star off my rating on this wonderful product though. You can't really say too many negative things about a 1080p projector for <$1000!!

I am very glad I bought this! At first I was worried that 92" might be too big for me, sitting back about 9.5 ft away, but having used it a while now, it is perfect. The projector will utilize up to a 300" screen, so I cannot wait till I move into my first house and have a nice area to set up for a 150" screen! I think that would be idea.

*** Update 3/5/10 ***

I've now owned this for about 5 months, and I have yet to run into any problems with it. I have over 300 hours of use on the bulb now. Once the bulb has had proper time to break in (200+) you will notice a better black level than when it was brand new. I still don't have any gripes with the performance of this projector. Everything has been fantastic. You really get all of your moneys worth with this sub-$1000 HD projector. I haven't been to a movie in the theater at all this year, and I was the guy who usually went almost every Friday. I can stay home and get the same experience now.'

Makita Replacement Battery - 9000, makita battery

I've had my Makita 6093D for 17 years and have used it only intermittently for home repairs. One of my two ancient batteries would no longer take a charge and I ordered this item, which arrived by mail in only three days. It charged up fine, was an exact fit, and worked fine putting two-inch screws through 3/4 inch plywood into brittle, 60-year old joists without pilot drilling. The new battery is quite a bit lighter than the old one, 11 oz vs 16 oz, but it is labelled 1.3 amp hour just like the OEM battery and I have no cause to doubt the truth of this. One peculiarity - this made-in-China battery is labelled (incorrectly) as nickel metal hydride, while the box is labelled (corectly) nickel-cadmium and there is a piece of paper in the box apologizing for the mislabeling on the battery itself. Pwr+ 9.6v Ni-cd 1300mah Makita 9000 9033 192696-2 632007-4 Battery Replacement (Makita Equivalent)

I'm very satisfied and feel that I made a good choice. Product arrived very quickly and performed well. I was a little apprehensive about how good a substitute it would be for the OEM battery that cost about twice as much. But it was exactly as described and virtually identical to the original.

I tried to buy these at Home Depot which is where I bought the drill, no go. They said it was too old and they don't stock them or know anything about it. I was able to find them quickly online and they were shipped fast and are working great in my old drill.

This battery is represented as a equivalent replacement for a Makita 9033. This is NOT TRUE, the Makita 9033 has a capacity of 2200 mah, this battery is 1500mah, a big difference and a gross misrepresentation.

Also it is way overpriced.

I am happy with the purchase after shopping around. [...]

I was tempted to purchase the NiMH, but was dissuaded after reading reviews that it might not be compatible with my charger. This NiCD should serve me well for my needs.

After looking around to purchase another cordless drill,I realized it is probably cheaper to just take a gamble and purchase a battery for my old Makita which I liked a lot.

This battery was delivered in a pretty quick fashion and was packaged very well and very reasonably priced.

I first drained it with my Makita flash light, then charged it up with my Makita charger.

I used it today for a short while,it is working great.I might purchase another one in a couple of months depending on how this battery holds up.

UPS showed up just as I was cussing out my vintage original battery for dropping it's charge again. I opened the box and said "just what I needed!" Popped it in my charger and a hour later. What a pleasure to see my true blue drill/driver run like new again!

Seller is deceptive in using a picture of a genuine OEM Makita battery picture and in the title using the Makita part numbers, in parenthesis stating (equivalent). Then "by Makita" as though manufactured by Makita and being "equivalent" to the indicated -other- Makita part numbers. I believe the use of the copyrighted Makita OEM battery photo and "by Makita" is meant to intentionally deceive by this Canadian shipper. I could have bought a honestly advertised Makita-clone for less. Cannot recommend this dishonest seller nor will I buy from them again. - 9000 - Cordless Drill - Power Tools - Makita Battery'

File Folders

These are nice enough folders and will do the job that I need, but they are thinner than the regular manilla folders I buy from Pendaflex. I had read reviews that said that but figured that since they were the same brand I usually get then they would be the same as the manilla ones, which I was used to. I was wrong. These are thinner. They will not hold up to a lot of everyday use, but if you just want to label and file stuff for occasional use, you should be fine.

The only other odd thing I found: when I get a box I always go through them right away and put them in order (left, center, right) for ease of use. I did not count overall how many were in the box, so I am not saying that there were not 100 folders in the box, but there were a different number of folders of each tab placement for different colors. With the blue when I was done I had 3 right tabs left. With green I had 4 left tab folders. I had extras for all colors and there was not the same number of each color either. My stacks were different heights.

The was in no way a HUGE deal to me, but I wanted to let others know.

If you just want to label and file paperwork that you will occasionally look at, these will work. Pendaflex CutLess File Folders, 1/3 Cut, Top Tab, Letter, Assorted Colors, 100 Per Box,( 48440)'
