We were removing carpet that had been installed over a beautiful wood floor. The carpet pad had been stapled down to the floor. About 80% of the staples could be removed easily with this tool, and removing them left only very small holes, since the staples got pulled up almost vertically. The cam action worked well.
However, 20% of the staples had been driven down too far (or maybe walking on them for 20 years pushed them into the floor), and this tool couldn't get a good grip on those low lying staples. The jaws would close on the staple, then slip off. We tried prying them up a little with a screwdriver or chisel, but that approach didn't work too well.
We finally got the last staples out using ordinary vise grips, which would hold onto the tops of the staples. The vise grip approach was more work, took longer, and left bigger holes.
If this nail remover had better grip on those low lying staples, it would have been perfect. Since it worked well on 800 out of a thousand staples, it was still worthwhile. The Extractor Nail Remover
These pliers are great if you are doing a home renovation. Pull nails straight out the back of moulding. Great for small nails that you can't pull with the claw of a hammer. Leverage makes for less effort as well. Helpful if you are keeping old moulding or just getting rusty nails out of the way.
This is a specialty tool that excels at its task. A quality tool at a fair price. Well worth the money if you must pull lots of nails. Even for occasional use, it's one of those great tools to have in the tool box. Obviously, if the nail is embedded into the wood, this tool won't help as you must have *something* to grip. Nonetheless, even a very small surface was sufficient as the tool is designed to increase the gripping pressure. It definitely works as advertised and causes no or minimal wood damage. This blows away every claw hammer or utility bar that I've used in the past. My neighbor also loved it when he was doing fence work and needed to remove many nails.
This product delivers as promised. I have had it for over a year now and find I use it all of the time for removing finishing nails from baseboards, door trim and walls. It pulls the nails with almost no effort and grips nails that have very little of a head exposed. It was a little pricey but in the end, not only is it extremely well made, it is worth every dollar I paid. I highly recommend it!
If you are pulling nails (reusing material) this tool is a must have. It will pull nails without heads or pull nails through the back of pieces. Very little to no damage to the material after the nail is removed. It will damage or not pull larger common nails when trying to pull out the back (better to hammer them out the face and then pull). I mainly use this to pull finish nails out of trim that I am going to reuse and it works flawlessly for that.'
