Protein Powder - bodybuilding, vegetarian

My autistic child who selectively only eats healthy foods(veggies and brown rice!) and will not eat burgers loves this stuff when blended with almond milk and mixed frozen berries from Walmart! It has "positively" affected his eating in only days as I think it is giving him the needed amino acids his body needs! Only one spoonful per mix though! He easily will drink two glasses per day. I finally feel we found a way to get necessary protein in him. This stuff "only" has brown rice protein and natural vanilla flavor without the added garbage so it merges nicely with the almond milk and berries! Jarrow Formulas Brown Rice Protein Concentrate, Chocolate Flavor, 1.2 Pounds

A good product for all following a clean eating diet: a short ingredient list with no added flavorings and sugar and easy to digest as well. It contains hardly any carbohydrates and fat.

But there are certainly things that could be improved: the powder does not dissolve well and it tends to clump even if used in a blender. It has a unpleasant aftertaste even when used in something that is strongly flavoured.

It has to be mixed with strong flavours such as fruit or coconut milk in order to make it palatable. When solely stirred into milk or water it is absolutely unpleasant - almost like shredded cardboard.

A good alternative is hemp protein, even if it has a higher percentage of carbs and fat (but the good omega fatty acids). The nice nutty flavour compensates this by far.

Since J Robb discontinued rice protein, I searched for a rice protein that approached the delicious taste of theirs. This turned into a search for a product that does not taste extremely rancid, like powdered plastics, or that a pea-sized amount of it is enough to ruin a quart-sized shake. Finally I found this one. It is not as good as J Robb, but it is not bad. It is the only rice protein I've found so far that I would buy again. Considering the competition, however, that is probably not saying much.

As for the taste of it, it is somewhat bland since it is unflavoured and unsweetened. For me that is a plus, since I prefer, for a number of reasons, to sweeten and flavour on my own. It has a slight and pleasant rice-like smell and taste (compared to other rice proteins I've tried that have a distinctly plastic reek!). Rice protein is naturally a bit grainy, so if you have never had it before, expect that. Lastly, rice protein is generally overpriced, but this one seems pretty good quality and the fact that it doesn't taste bad and I was actually able to consume the whole jar makes it fairly worth the money.

I love it. It's really good with Tempt Chocolate Milk and is very filling. this is the only non dairy shake i've tried that doesn't give me some sort of stomach upset/discomfort. I like the smooth texture (shake well). - Bodybuilding - Vegetarian - Vegan - Gluten Free'
