I bought one of these for a trip to South America. Was looking for something compact that I could use for a portable fan, battery charger & netbook. Overall, it worked flawlessly and the compact design (plus additional plugs) will make it useful for other trips abroad. Only negative was the weight, which seems to be a fact of life in these products. One caveat: You do have to pay attention to the manual 50/1600W settings. I bought this product in 2002 for a trip to Germany. I've since used it in Europe, Africa, and South America, mostly to keep camera batteries charged. It saved me a few times, like when the plugs in southern Spain were different than the north. I recommend this for any world travelers.
Bought this 2 years ago - and it works perfectly for converting US devices to Europe devices.
You have to be careful though with the 50w and 1600w option. The device fuse will break if you do this wrong setting - so be sure to have additional fuses in your travel bag.
I bought this converter because I was going to France and wanted to charge my cell phone. As soon as I tried to charge it, I realized that the converter, even though it said that it was for Europe, did not work in France. I have since returned this item.
I originally purchased two of these, took forever to arrive in Kuwait via APO AE. By the time I got them I used them twice and they overheated and melted the plastic housing. They would be great if they work but they dont. Unable to send back cause of the crappy return policy. Treat these like the plague.

and this is the first.
i bought this Simran unit for 900W product and it just doesn't work.
i tested it with multi meter and found that the 1600W option
return between 40V-70V instead of 110V-120V.
the 50W option works fine.
bottom line if you need to use it for product with more than 50W
this is just doesn't work!
save your money.
I ordered this before a trip to China, but since my husband and I travel a lot I wanted something with multiple plug converters so we could use it again. After reading the reviews, I gathered that as long as I didn't use it with a curling or flat iron (which btw it clearly states not to use it with in the product description) I would be fine. Sure enough it worked great! It is a little heavy, but I like how it comes in a compact case that contains all the plug converters and the power converter.
