Responsibility Chart - reward, chores
I bought 2 of these for my 3 and 5 year olds after reading these reviews. But I couldn't find a review that stated the titles of the responsibilities for those of you wanting to know if it will work for you; which for most it should cuz it covers most. Here they are: get ready for bed, get dressed, take bath, cear table, put toys away, keep hands to self, share, brush teeth, stop whining, apologize, say please, thank you, help with indoor/outdor chores, no teasing, show respect, load/empty dishwasher, put clothes in wash, don't use bad language, set table, take care of pet, do homework, make bed, clean room, take out trash, keep hands to self, plus 2 blank to write your own.
My 5 year old took to it right away as we placed all her responsibilities on the board. She was soooo excited and said I'm going to do that more, etc. She even added some resp. she usually wouldn't do, cuz she wanted to get more magnets; so at the end of the week we count them, assign a monetary allowance for each magnet earned (maybe 5 cents), and she can get a little toy or treat at end of week. I figured with 7 days a week and 10 resp. she could earn around 3.50 week; that's big to her right now!! Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magnetic Responsibility Chart.
I bought this for my 4 year old and after a few days, decided to also buy one for my 2 year old. They love them! They like working for "smilies" and make sure to do everything on their list to fill up their columns. I have also considered setting up an allowance or reward system if they get all 6 smilies for the day. My mom made a similar checklist for me when I was a kid, but this is so much easier to use and it looks a lot nicer hanging on the wall. I have been very pleased with all the Melissa & Doug products I have purchased, this is no exception!
This chart is wonderful for introducing responsibilites to your kids. It serves as a visual reminder of what they've accomplished during the week, as well as what they need to work on. My kids feel a sense of accomplishment every time they get to put a magnet on a chore they've completed. Very durable, very well-made, and very colorful. I decided to go with this particular chart because of its aesthetic appeal, and because of the Melissa & Doug name. This is definitely another high quality product from this company.
We bought this item for our 5 year old son, who was starting to push back at us when we asked him to do things (like clean up his toys). This chart has 25 responsibilities - plus 2 blank magnets you can customize - and all potential tasks seem to be covered.
As soon as we started using this chart we noticed an improvement in our son's behavior. Our expectations no longer seem arbitrary to him. Instead he knows what we expect, and he looks forward to reviewing the chart at each day's end. When he has performed what is expected of him, he gets to place a smiley face magnet in the appropriate box.
We'll buy another one of these next year for our daughter. - Chores - Reward - Behavior Mod - Chore Chart'

Cutlery Sets - cutlery, knife sets
I recently moved into an apartment and quickly realized how important it is to have a decent kitchen knife set around. The handles are sturdy, blades sharp, and the block looks nice in the kitchen. I wouldn't recommend this to a master cook, but anyone looking for a decent and well priced set, look no further. Cook N Home 15 Piece Cutlery set, Wooden Block
Good knife set for those on a budget or those that dont need anything fancy. Does not come with a bread knife nor sharpener though. The scissors dont seem like they would handle hard to cut items. The serrated knives come sharp but the bigger, non-serrated knives seem to need a little sharpening. All in all, for all these knives and a block (mine is more yellow as opposed to the color in the picture with more grain as well), its worth the price. This item is also listed for more money under Neway Int'l.
For the price, you can't really beat this set. So far I haven't had any problems with any of the knives, they still look and feel solid and good. Only downside is the wooden block looks a little cheap, but like I said for the price it's great! - Knife - Knife Sets - Henckels - Cutlery'

Billy Bands - resistance bands, resistance band
I have been using these bands for my P90X workouts for about 6 weeks now and so far they have been great. I am a female, 5'2", weighing about 110 pounds. I would recommend these bands for any woman. They attach easily to one another to increase resistance so I would imagine that it would benefit men a great deal as well. The guide that came with the bands listed; GREEN: 5-8pounds; Red: 8-12pounds; Blue: 12-16pounds; Black: 16-20pounds. So far I have been using the blue band for most of my arm workouts and the black for my back workouts. Overall I would say it's a good product for the price. ProSource Set of 4 Premium Stackable Latex Exercise Resistance Bands
I am in my 3rd week of P90X and these work perfect. I like that they have the carabiner clips so you can use more than one band at a time. My only complaint is that there is only one set of handles. it would be nice to have two sets so you didn't have to un-clip and re-clip the bands between certain work outs. But I get by just fine. The Door anchor is a little scary to use at first but I have gotten to the point were I fully trust it and the door. (I have not used the ankle/foot straps yet.)
I'm trying to get myself in shape, so I ordered P90X. One of the things they recommend is exercise bands. I debated over several options, but decided on this one because of the high reviews and the lower price. I'm so very glad I did. As you can see from the picture, there are four bands that vary in strength (tension) from five to twenty pounds. The bands include a paper that has the color to weight information included. The handles are sturdy foam over nylon with metal clips that securely attach to the bands. I received two sets of handles in my nifty little carrying case that zips close. I also received the door anchor, which was important to my exercise program as it was to be used in place of a chinup bar--which I couldn't use...yet. Anyway, the door anchor didn't look like much. Just a nylon strap with a loop on one end (that you feed the bands through) and a bulky portion on the other end that you can lay across the top of your door (then shut the door) to securely fasten the bands in position. I planned on using the bands on my closet door, but to be honest, my builder didn't use the most durable doors in my home, so I was worried about the bands/anchor breaking my doors...or the door popping open while using the bands and causing injury. But the worries turned out to be foundless. The anchor is very secure, and apparently, my door is strong enough to support the pressure from the bands. The bands are made of durable rubber material and have heavily re-enforced ends that are firmly attached to a metal loop that attached to the handles. I've been pleasantly surprised at how well they work. I've been using them for three weeks now with no problems. I will definitely be upgrading to the heavier duty bands (higher weights) by ProSource when the time comes. And one more thing, if you are debating between these and the Beach Body bands...don't. These will handle your needs without any issues, and you'll save money in the process.
Let me just say hands down that these bands are great! I have been using them for P90x and am currently on my second round with all the bands in excellent working condition. I am a woman and I have smaller hands so the handle design doesn't bother me although if you have larger hands, I can see how it would definitely rub against your hands while doing certain moves. These have lasted me through a complete round of P90x without fail and I am in the middle of a second round now and they are still going!
I thought I would have to buy new bands as I got stronger (the max resistance black band is only 16-20 lbs), but that was before I discovered that the durable metal connections are actualy clip ons similar in caliber to climbing gear. I've been able to go on to my second round with my same trusty bands just by doubling up (I now use the black + green band, which is 5-8 additional lbs of resistance) for my biceps and still feel the burn. With the band stacking, you can easily get up to 40-50lbs of resistance. Not bad for the price right?
I can't say that I have any cons about this product personally, but like I said the handle design can be slightly annoying if you have larger hands, but not to the point to detract from your workout I don't think. I would hands down recommend this product, and have recommended it to friends. It is an excellent, quality product at a great price.
These bands are the best value for price I found on Amazon, as I received this product I was amazed by the build quality and the accesories (mind you, for beginners as they lack some of the most advanced features).
In a nutshell, great set of bands for home.
I purchased a ProSource Set of 4 Premium Stackable Latex Exercise Resistance Bandss with 2 handles, a door stop, and 2 velcro cuffs to be used for home physical therapy. What a great product. All of the individual pieces were separately packaged and then repackaged in a nice nylon zip bag, great for using on trips.
The product itself is great; I love it. But, I wanted to purchase the lightest weight band separately and balked at the shipping cost for a $1.99 item. I called the company's 800 number and the individual with whom I spoke (Dan) graciously offered to send me a complimentary band. I am very pleased. Great product, great customer service.
I bought these to go with the 10 Minute Workout popular now by the Insanity company. These resistance bands work great and do what I need them to do. The door attachment works well and the grips are comfortable to use. The set comes with 4 bands of varying weight, I only wish they would give an extra door attachment (as we were going to split them). But for one person I would recommend these. - Exercize Bands - Resistance Bands - P90x - Resistance Band'

Photography - gary fong, flash
I got this to use with my Canon 40D for those trips where I just don't have enough room to bring along my big flash and Whaletail. This is a nice compact little gadget that comes in 2 pieces. The bracket slips into the hotshoe and then you push the white diffuser onto the little pegs and can adjust it as needed higher or lower for your particular flash. I didn't find it as flimsy as the other reviews, it snapped right into place on my hotshoe without a problem. It is a bit more difficult to attach the head to the bracket, that would really be my one main complaint that I would like this to be easier. As for performance, I was pretty impressed for the most part. Sure, it doesn't come near to the performance of my full-fledged bounce flash setup, but for a $20 gadget it does quite good. I took some photos of my dogs which is usually a huge red eye problem with direct flash (most animals produce far worse red eye than people) and the results were quite pleasing with virtually no red eye and much softer shadows. Gary Fong Puffer Pop Up Flash Diffuser
The mount that some people have had trouble with was fixed with a slight design modification quite a while ago. While most dealers' stock has been replaced, there are some that are still trickling through. If the mount broke for you, call customer support at 800-906-6447 x1 and they will send you the new one. It doesn't matter where you purchased it. The design change is illustrated here http://garyfonginc.com/images/PUF-MOUNT_v2.jpg.
For the price of the product, I think the product works fine. However, the white plastic portion of the product is quite flimsy. I am extremely careful when putting it on the black pegs to attach to camera. As well, the white plastic portion is hard to attach to the pegs, and the fact that it is flimsy doesn't help.
With all that said, the product produces great results, and does exactly what I would expect it to do. The price is reasonable and I haven't seen too many products that do the same thing. I would recommend it if you can be careful with your photography products!
If you've read the reviews that discuss broken or damaged devices, there's a reason for that: This little gadget is made of the lowest quality materials that could possibly be used and still have some sort of functionality.
If you get one of these, and I do recommend getting one (or 2), be very, very gentle assembling and, most importantly, mounting the device. Once on your camera, I use it on a XSi/450, it works very well. Some quick advice if you get one. 1, be gentle putting it on your camera - this may sound redundant but you'll understand. 2, increase your flash compensation to +1 stop and experiment / test from there.
Most Important: The results using the "Puffer" are surprisingly good. I've used it at a couple of family gatherings with great effect. The images, both indoor and outdoor fill light, are much, much better than without.
I was a little hesitant after reading some of the reviews about how flimsy the mounting bracket was but I decided to go ahead and try it. The only other option was the Lumiquest-Soft Screen and I didn't feel like putting velcro on my Canon 30D. I've had no problems with the bracket and for the price, I think that the construction is strong enough.
The comparison with portraits is amazing. Not only are the shadows softer, but the colors are more saturated and intense...more like an existing light photo. My four favorite nude practice models, our dogs, have little or no red-eye.
One change I did make, was with flash compensation when using the pop-up as fill flash. I usually dial the flash exposure down about one stop. I don't do that when I use the puffer. You also lose a few feet of range on the flash so if your subject is at the outer limit of what your flash will illuminate, you'd better remove the puffer or move closer to the subject.
This is a cheap little plastic device that claims to greatly improve your flash photos with your pop up flash. It is exactly that. I put this thing on my D90 and was instantly impressed by the results. It actually prevents that pop up flash from doing the only thing it can do..... making everyone really ugly. $20 just turned that useless flash into something very useable. The light is much softer and falls on the subjects in a much more appealing way. Outdoors, it works really well for fill flash. I use flash in rear-sync mode almost all the time, and the puffer makes it easy to blend the flash with the existing lighting.
Keep in mind, a speedlight with a defusor will always give you better results, but you may not have it with you, or not have one at all.
As for the other reviewers having problems with build quality, I have not experienced any of this. I took it out of the package, set it up on my camera with no difficulty, and started shooting. It's in and out of my camera bag all the time, seems sturdy and durrable enough to me. Some reviewers refer to the plastic being to flexible or soft. To me that just means it will be less britle in cold weather, so less prone to cracking. I consider the type ofplastic used a plus.
Big improvement on everyday shots. I would absolutely recomend this to anyone..... again, HUGE bang for your $20. - Flash - Puffer - Pop Up - Gary Fong'

Voice Recognition Software
I'm writing this review, ours should set the computer and NaturallySpeaking 11 home are writing this review as I dictate. Please note I'll be doing no editing whatsoever. So if there any misspellings or miss words or whatever, it's either the software or I can't talk correctly. I'm guessing it's software since I have not been drinking, suffered any head trauma recently, or taken any hallucinogenic. So let's begin.
So what I'm going to do in this test is simply say a few phrases and words that are well-known and you can judge for yourself accuracy.

In general, the program does seem to do pretty good job. The hardest part that I had is learning to speak rather than type. Learning to say the punctuation rather than press it with my fingers. And you really need to look at what's being written in a field proofread closer than normal. That should say proofread closer than normal. For me what seems to be the bind is that I'm talking and then watching it type in reading what types and then talking the next sentence. So I'm not hundred percent just speaking it proofreading as I speak. So the difficult transition to go from typing with my fingers to diving with the program.
But I have to say the number one advantage is that I don't have to think about words like to say but taking consideration can I spell that correctly and simply to say him. So from my perspective of being a very good speller I can express myself much broader and much more in depth than I would have naturally by simply typing them pretty much sticking with the words I knew how to type or spell.
So in general I feel that Dragon NaturallySpeaking Home 11 is a very good product and was a very good decision to buy and would recommend
update:
after using the program for about a week or more, I and the program seem to be working together much better now. I'm not sure if it's that the program has learned my speech or that my speech is learned program. But after looking and reading over what I wrote at first, I can see a significant improvement in my words and with the program's writing. All in all I have to say this program pretty much does what it says it is ( does). I would only think that over time I'll get more use to using the program and the program will get more use to how I speak. Dragon NaturallySpeaking Home, Version 11
Got it on Monday and sent it back to Amazon on Friday. I was using Windows 7 Speech Recognition with surprisingly good results. After hearing all the ads for Dragon, I decided to give it a try to see if its accuracy was better than Windows. It was, except Dragon's speech recognition engine is 20 times slower than Windows. While I could speak naturally with Windows, Dragon required me to stop at the end of each sentence and wait a minute or two for it to figure out what I was saying. Dragon slowly populated one phrase at a time. The product is completely unusable. I recommend you use the built-in speech recognition of Windows 7, which is far better than Dragon and it's free!
BTW - this review was written using Windows 7 Speech Recognition. If I used Dragon, I would still be waiting.
I previously used Dragon version 10 for about eight months. When the new version 11 came out I was called by their customer service and after they described the new improvements. I bought it and am very happy I did. I'm still trying to get used to the punctuation aspects. The help screens are very good and the fact that it will take so many verbal commands is very helpful to me. I have multiple sclerosis and can no longer type but can use the mouse so I feel grateful that such a program exists. I did upgrade to a Logitech microphone because of another review I read earlier. I found two problems: when you try to use the rename function (F2) and bring up a spell window any entry will not transferred to the renamed file.Nuance has confirmed it is a bug but as of April 2011 have not corrected it. The second is a program does have a delay in response of at least a few seconds to as long as two or 3 min. to type the dictation. What causes this. I'm not aware of but it is a flaw with this program. I just have to wait until it suddenly wakes up and starts to type. I know it's a problem that if I say " go to sleep" and wait to see when the microphone turns to yellow. It has woken up. Which happened while I was typing this. All in all it's a super program and I used all the time.'

Altered Clothing - fashion, art
After reading about this book on a blog that I frequent, I checked it out from the local library. Our family relies heavily on thrift shopping to clothe all of us (7 in all!), and anything to make thrift items more useful and attractive seems like a great idea.
That said, these are beyond stylish (in the strangest way), and most of the fashions are just plain weird. I will try to upload some customer images, so readers can take a look and decide for themselves.
I understand that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" so my opinions are clearly not gospel...they are just that...opinions.
My 2 stars are for the excellent pages of sewing instruction at the beginning, and the nifty method of making a custom dress form using an old T-shirt and duct tape. That is very clever and a thrifty idea!
I liked some of the accessory and home ideas: pillow covers from button down shirts, the checkbook cover, the shopping bag. The fashions are mostly so out there that not many real people will be caught dead in them.
If you were hoping to make these clothes useful for filling out an everyday or professional wardrobe, for instance...on a budget...don't get your hopes up. Many are just plain ugly and unflattering, even on the uber-hip women pictured in the book.
Here are some examples:
...a pair of pants with sewn-on chaps
...crocheted poncho turned into a skirt, looks like it's just being worn over a slip
...a winter mini skirt made from a wool dress coat (theirs is ivory, no less!). Take a look at the picture, and then try to imagine sitting down! Also, think "bulky wool coat pockets" around most women's hips. Ick.
...a pleated school uniform-type skirt turned into a tube top.
...a bustier made out of "old man pants" (their description, not mine)
...a boatneck, batwing top made out of old sheets
...a skirt made from a mesh football jersey
For the right person, all this might be very useable. For those who don't work in a trendy, bohemian boutique where such attire would be desired, I'd suggest looking elsewhere for ideas. Subversive Seamster: Transform Thrift Store Threads into Street Couture
This book is beyond bad. For those trying to save money by buying at thrift stores - save your money and don't buy this book! The "fashion" ideas, and that is a term used loosely, are horrible and all look badly home made. In some of the photos the edges aren't even finished correctly ( i.e. a bustier with uneven edge seams and threads hanging out)- and most are fashions that no one in their right style mind would wear. They are not radical and hip, they are messy and sad. The only idea that might prove helpful is how to create your own dress makers dummy - and this is a recycled idea.
If you must look at this book, a trip to the local library and about 30 seconds is all you will need.
Making trash into worse trash
Oh. My. God. Where to begin? Upgrading ordinary clothes is a hobby of mine and I purchased Subversive Seamster by mail hoping for fresh ideas. After I turned the first pages I realized that the real value of this book is entertainment. As each photograph reveals a new fashion atrocity you begin to merrily anticipate further sartorial horrors and you are not disappointed. Chest-flattening tops, skirts without proper hems, tucks that look like accidents, a shirt sleeve made into coin purse (who is THAT poor?), appliqués zigzagged with " medium stitch length and width" showing unraveling edges and other hobo projects. If you want to apply for food stamps wear one of these creations. It will help. I alternatively laughed and cringed. I still cannot decide which project wins the Palm of Ugliness: the bulging un-hemmed Peek-a-Bootylicious Skirt made of men's pants or the gaucho pants with applied flannel pajama legs. I also question the wisdom of sacrificing a classic leather vest to make a pair of earrings. I would no more want to wear such clothes than I would want to eat from a garbage container. If you are very poor, save your time and effort by wearing unaltered thrift store clothes, you won't look any worse.
If you are an individual with a sense of style and have even a bit of crafty intuition, this book is an incredible find! I love the tips for sifting through thrift stores and the projects are fantastic. I especially love the city shorts and repurposing ideas for bridesmaid dresses. You don't even have to shop for these. I bet most ladies have a pair of pants or a cast off bridesmaid dress they'd like to find a use for. Even if you don't exactly love the designs shown, you can make them suit your own personal style by choosing items composed of the fabrics that you love. This book doesn't limit the indie seamster, but introduces her to innovative ideas that open up a whole world of fashions that make a statement: you! At your most fabulous, of course.
Just want to say first that some of the nay-sayers are a bit out of the demographic that the book seems to be directed at. Which may be why they give such bad reviews of it. :)
Regardless, I just got this today used. The beginning is awesome as it goes further than to explain all about sewing, it includes tips on "lettuce" seams, shows you how to do ruffles, make fabric flowers and some other handy things you'll need to upcycle.
I love some of the instructions in this book and they show you a step-by-step process on how to make them. The city shorts, the wool skirt, the bolero especially are really cute.
The only downside is that I wish there were more projects! I appreciate that the back lists fabric stores in San Francisco and lists a lot of other places to get craft ideas.
I checked this book out of the library with SO much excitement - I love thrifting, love "deals", love the idea of creative something cool and funky out of something drab. So what a great idea for a book! The first two chapters were very helpful. Sewing skills, modifying clothes, and making a personal dress form from duct tape - very cool and helpful. But then as I started paging through the projects... my high hopes for this book came plummeting down. I just couldn't see myself making a skirt from football jersey or a halter top from "old man pants" that unzips down the front. Boo. =[ There were one or two clothing items I might try, but most were just too "out there." I was hoping for something similar to what I've tried before, like turning a regular long-sleeve T into a ruched, ruffle-front Anthropologie-ish tank. Maybe the ideas in this book float your boat - they are all modeled by some cute chicka mamas - but I would suggest checking it out from the library before buying. Reference the review left by "Latte" above for some photos of the projects in this book. Although the sewing and modification instructions are super helpful, they're just not worth the price of the book. - Fashion - Art - Sewing - Sewing Books'

Save Money - discounts, save money
Is this the right time for this book to come out, or what? The tips on gas savings alone (where to park, when to buy gas, errand running, etc.) are worth what you'll pay for this book. I really like the tips for practical things that you use everyday. For instance, the tips about food shopping are full of common sense and also show a concern for your good health with the items you buy. The author presents a comprehensive approach to buying a new vehicle...again, this is worth many times the price of the book. He also discusses in detail the pros and cons of some things that have confused me, like buying in bulk or buying refurbished items. The tips on shopping for travel arrangements can save you a boatload (pun intended!) Also, the book has many sites which can lead to great values, discounts, coupons, or places to get more information on smart shopping and bargains. Let me assure you that these are truyl REAL discounts, you will imemdiately learn how to find bargains on clothing, food, even your utility bills. The economic times are tough and probably will get worse before they get better. The BEST way to have more money is to SAVE more, not earn more. Ben Franklin was not quite correct when he said, "A penny saved is a penny earned" because a penny saved is worth MORE than a penny earned because you pay taxes on your earnings and spend time making it. So if you find that you are able to read The Bargain Hunting Bible and save $15 next week, that is like you went out and EARNED about $27 before taxes and the other expenses that goes along with a job. I am surprised that the author doesn't charge more for this book, it is worth more but perhaps he wants to make it easy on his buying audience and for that we are grateful. - Discounts - Save Money'

Xoom
The rubber grip makes it easier to hold and less slippery. For a slim rubber skin it feels fine. I knew this wasn't much protection going in but it does make setting it down smoother.
The cons: Can't really grip and carry the Xoom without also pinching the exposed screen side too. It could use some sort of flippable front cover. I'm finding I could use a cover with a stand of some sort, though the rubbery grip makes it easier to use other objects to hold it at an angle.
If all you want is a sleek rubbery skin to cover the back mostly, this does the job great. Motorola Protective Gel Case for MOTOROLA XOOM Blue (Motorola Retail Packaging)
Very good case for what it is. Pro's: great fit, attractive color (BLUE!) and the gel material has good grip. Con's: There is no opening for the memory card slot (doesn't function yet anyway.....lame) and there is no reinforcement around the rim of the case. So, if you happen to pick up the Xoom by the edge the case can peel off. It does conform right back though so no big deal. This is a good product overall as it should be since it is not a third party product and comes from Motorola.
The case works as advertised. It is rubbery and protects the back side of your Xoom. Two things stick out for me. One is that the case picks up any thing that you set it on. I use mine outside and when I pick it up to go inside I can feel fine particles of sand or whatever stuck to the case. The other thing is that the edge where the connectors are is flimsy. When holding the case by that edge it often peels back. I've gotten used to carrying my Xoom upside down, with the Motorola logo on the bottom.
With something as simple as this case, one hopes to write (and read) a simple review.
And slowness of the USPS - which delivered my Prime order in a stunningly slow 7 days - aside, the case is perfect: Great fit, high production quality, and improved grip on the Xoom.
Until someone is smart enough to make a great leather portfolio case for the Xoom, this is a great sleeve for keeping your Xoom protected. Its easier to hold on to and contrary to the other review I don't find it slippery at all. It fits well and is great for keeping your Xoom from sliding around and getting scratched. Put a screen protector on it and your golden.
This is hands down the best case for the xoom. It's skin-like fit is perfect and it offers great protection. It does not, however, offer any screen protection, so I also carry mine in a netbook sleeve. It does what it's intended to do though, which is protect the case from dings and scratches. The only downside I see to this case is that it's a little harder to hold the tablet in one hand with it on. The metal backing on the Xoom case won't slip in your hand, but this case is a little slippery. Definitely not a dealbreaker though. If you were wondering, it WILL fit in the motorola dock with this case on. The dock comes with a special adapter for this case.'
