Steve Economides

Everyone knows I am a frugal hack. If it can be done cheaper, I want to know how to do it myself. So obviously, you know I'd enjoy reading Cut You Grocery Bill In Half.

This book was full of tips and suggestions to find strategic ways to cut costs in your home. No matter what your family size, or how you shop, there were savvy ideas and information for every income.

From ways to store food, to cheaper shopping without coupons, to food storage and meal planning, the Economides showed how it worked for them, and how it can work for you.

I really found this book to be helpful. Although most of it was common sense, I can see lots of tips that can help novice frugals find their place and cut their costs. Alot of it....ok, most of it, I already knew, but it is nice to have a helpful guide to turn to for quick ideas. And the meals for pennies recipes at the end was a nice bonus.

This is a good book for families who want to save their hard earned money, but don't know where to start. Even if you only apply a little of the advice, Cut Your Grocery Bill In Half will help you save $$$. And those few dollars will add up!

(This book was provided for me to review by Thomas Nelson Publishers.) Cut Your Grocery Bill in Half with America's Cheapest Family: Includes So Many Innovative Strategies You Won't Have to Cut Coupons

The title alone does a great job of explaining the purpose of this particular book. The Economide family of 7 shares tips they have learned and perfected over the past 25 years as they have earned the right to be named as "America's Cheapest Family." Filled with tips for every level of bargain shopper, from beginning to expert, every family can benefit in some way from this book. This family has perfected their technique to the point that they only shop once a month,so they demonstrate how to save money by planning ahead and going to the store less often. Start by going weekly, then every couple of weeks, gradually taking control of impulse spending and buying whatever is placed in front of you.

What Dave Ramsey does for finances, Steve and Annette Economides do for the grocery bill. By removing common excuses of too little time, not knowing how to cook, bad location with few store choices, or the lack of coupons and sales ads, they encourage their readers to take charge of their grocery purchasing experience, once and for all. Sharing a keen awareness on how stores market to each consumer, the reader will better understand how to form a plan and shopping timetable that works specifically for them. This book will show how to shop on your own terms, rather than on theirs. Know prices, so that you can recognize a great deal when you find one. Ask questions. Understand the system, so you can use it to your benefit.

My personal favorite tips were how to take advantage of the "price match" guarantee for superstores, such as Wal-mart and Target, the use of rain checks to capture a great deal even when a targeted item is sold out, and on how to save money when you do choose to dine out. With minimal effort, each reader should be able to make an immediate dent in their grocery budget, freeing that money to be better used elsewhere.

I received this book free from the publisher through the [...] <[...]> book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

There is some good advice in this book, like grocery shop with a list or to take an inventory of what you already have on hand before you shop for example, but neither of these tips are something anyone doesn't already know they should be doing (not necessarily doing, but should be doing). Other advice in the book goes too far with recommendations like buying enough milk to last a month and freezing it. I don't know about anyone else, but I prefer my milk and coffee creamer to be fresh; this isn't a viable solution. I can come up with my own nonsensical advice without the help of a $10 book.

There was probably 5% of this book I found useful, meaning it wasn't reiterated nomenclature for the masses and frankly I feel the masses are by far smarter than this. Most of this information we already know, like I already said, or can be found on the internet. My advice, save the $10 you would have spent on this book and look up the same information on the internet for free.

This is yet another great book by Steve and Annette Economides! I couldn't put it down once I got it. Basically it's a book that seems to have "springboarded" from a chapter in their last book. The buying groceries chapter in the last book was good but left the reader wanting more advice and tips. This book definitely fits that bill! I have been a frugal person for at least 16 years, so I did already know a lot of what was in the book. But there was still enough info to make it worth the read. Lots! I love how the tips for saving money were very specific to each item. You could tailor much of their advice to fit your needs. The best part is you won't feel deprived and you'll save money and time --and use both of them for what's really important!

As for the stuff in the book that I already knew - well it's nice to know that I'm not alone in my frugal quest! Normally I wait until the library gets a book and then I order it - but after I scanned it at the bookstore - I knew it was a keeper! I also had a B&N coupon, had a membership (I homeschool and buy books from them) discount. Not convinced yet? There's also a rebate for $3.50 that you can send in for.. Get and nost important --USE IT!

I have always used coupons and shopped sales so I was anxious to learn new stategies to help save even more $$. I was disappointed because the advice in this book is basically "shop sales and use coupons". I agree with the reviewer who said the numbers do not add up. The prices they quote - both regular and sale prices - are far below what things sell for in my community. Only one store in my town doubles coupons and it is the store where regular items are already the highest priced in town. So even with a doubled coupon, there is no way I can get products for pennies as they describe. Additionally, frequently the stores put a limit on the number of sale items you can purchase in one order so it is impossible to buy a lot to stock up on.

I found other chapters to be somewhat insulting. For example, the chapter on organizing and storage suggested that we keep potholders next to the stove. Imagine that! Are people really so stupid that they need that kind of advice? Other suggestions such as freezing milk just don't seem practical since when I tried it the milk after thawing was very unappetizing and had separated into a watery substance. Yes, I shook the milk before trying to use and it just did not re-constitute. The suggestion to buy items in bulk ignores the fact that the expiration date is there for a reason; such as, yeast beyond the expiration date does not work and soda with expiration dates does go flat even if unopened.

Overall, the advice was so basic, I found it somewhat insulting to think that I needed advice from them to do what I already do.'

Monopod

I bought this for use on my sit on top kayak. The product arrived much sooner than expected.

It's very well made and its mounting system is very secure and is really easy to attach and detach.

Kayalu also makes a light that works the same way so I'm going to be buying that next for my kayak. Kayalu Kayacam® Camera Mount | Portable compact digital camera mount for powerboat, sailboat, kayak, dinghy, canoe and inflatable. U. S. and Intl. Patents Pending.'

Dry Erase Markers - dry erase boards, white board

I got this whiteboard for my small business. It works great for my purposes. So far I have not had any issues with erasing the board and I have in the past with other boards. Erases clean and completly. Also, very easy to mount.

I looked around the net for a better price at the same size board, and could not find it. Good price, good size. Dry-Erase Board, Melamine, 48 x 36, White, Satin-Finished Aluminum Frame

I bought this item with Amazon prime delivery. I figured that Amazon will not mess up the shipping as other sellers may do.

As expected, the board arrived this morning in perfect condition double boxed by Amazon. The seller was PLEXSUPPLY (I don't know if it makes any difference. I just went for the one available with prime shipping).

The board is up and looks beautiful. I am so glad I bought it on Amazon and not a special order on Staples store for $40 more than what I paid here.

**** Update: November 5 2010 *****

It's been about a month and the board is performing well. My last board (that I bought at a local store) started staining and becoming permanent after a month or so, no mater how well I cleaned it. This board works well and keeps clean. I use it extensively every day, so I would know by now if something is not right. Overall I am very happy with this purchase.

A HORRIBLE experience. It arrived in a box that had obviously been dropped and then re-taped (obviously that is all the shipper). But the board was NOT packaged properly at all. To return the board, I first had to submit pics and wait. Then it took forever to get the RMA. I had to ask the seller several times for the RMA. Then, in order to get my money back, the board had to be returned in the original box, inside a new box -- or they had the option of not accepting the return. So, we had to build our own box to return this board, or fork over about $50 to buy one that would fit. The whole return process took about a month. Wasted a lot of time and energy. It was ridiculous.

Order from Costco! Got it in 1 day and in perfect condition."

This board was great for about 2 months, and then suddenly warped to the point where the bottom right corner actually bent out from the wall about 10 inches. The back is made of cardboard, so the overall product is flimsy. I am throwing it away today, and I am going to replace it with a higher quality board. This product is definitely not a good choice.

I bought this for my kids. I made them an "art" room up in the loft and seeing how much they love drawing on their little dry erase boards I figured why not get them a huge one! I read reviews from people who had problems with it being damaged due to improper packaging, but since this was going to be fulfilled by Amazon, I figured I wouldn't have that problem. Well...I did. You can see on the outer packaging 2 punctures in the box, which of course went through to the board. I'm not sure who packaged this, Amazon or Plexsupply, but whoever it was needs to improve on how they ship this. One would think maybe putting something in front of the white board (like another piece of cardboard or styrofoam) might help with any bumps the box takes in transit. I will be sending this back since it's damaged. Hopefully I can find another that can be shipped here without any damage. I am an avid Amazon shopper and I've never really had any problems, so this is really a bummer!

I should have heeded the other's reviews. The item was packaged very poorly and arrived with a hole through the cardboard and the dry erase board. Had very prompt response from the seller when I informed them of it, however, I had to contact them repeatedly to get my refund. Finally received my refund.

Arrived poorly packed and slightly dented. I bent back out the dented marker holder--so that was fixable. However, upon trying to hang it up, noticed right away it was massively warped.

I decided to just nail the thing into the wall on all four corners, which forces it to even out and makes it usable.

I wish I would've gotten the board that was about $15 more (with black corners) and bought it from a different supplier (the one I got was from Plexsupply) as this was all around a bad deal.

Works really wonderful! The only problem is that it holds by the top on the wall, so the bottom stay loose which is a little bit annoying when you want to write on it. I just put and Adhesive (I used Poster Putty) on each bottom corner, and now it's perfect. - Whiteboard - White Board - Dry Erase Boards - Large'

Home Security - charlie bar, home security

I read all the reviews before I tried this product. I am very concerned and picky shopper. I thought I would give this a try. I believe the key to this product is the flooring you are using this on. The foot on the lock works excellent on title or wood. I would not recommend this product on carpet.

One key point to remember...the farther away you have the base from the door the less strength it has. Try to get it between 70 degrees and 80 degrees. I was able to knock it out of place at 50 and 60. I normally do not worry about safety; however, I am a heavy sleeper. I can fend for myself but I have to hear it first. Let me know if you found this helpful! Master Lock 265DCCSEN Dual-Function Security Bar

With all the hype about bump keys (which basically renders most locks useless), I tried to think of something that can counter it. So far, this is the only thing that I can find short of buying a top of the line lock for a $80 - $200.

[Pro]

It's moderately effective with a low price.

It's lightweight and portable. You can bring it on trips.

It's versatile (it's adjustable and can be used on any door that swings inward and sliding doors)

This will slow down potential intruders, potentially either buying you precious extra time or alerting you.

You can use it as a makeshift bat if needed.

It has better quality than similar competitors.

[Cons]

It only slows down a potential intruder. It won't stop them. This device is common enough for them to think of ways of countering it.

The top piece that hooks into the door knob is made of cheap plastic. It will eventually break. Check it often.

The device does what is suppose to. If someone wanted to break in the front door of our apartment they would have to kick it down... and we would actually hear it.

We were more afraid of someone "sneaking" in the place, rather than breaking in.

When it is stretched out to the fullest it seems a little flimsy.

An Added bonus is that it also works as a door stopper to hold the front door open.

The silver button that locks the bar length in place slips out of the hole VERY easily, allowing the bar to collapse. I tested this bar by simply leaning with my full weight (220 lbs) on the outside of the door, and the button gave way, allowing the door to open freely. This little button BARELY makes it through the hole on the bar. Rather than return this thing, I am going to use my drill to make some modifications, and use another metal pin to lock the bar in place. Also, the foot of this thing slips pretty easily, even when moistened and pressed against a high-friction floor.

Master Lock should be very ashamed of this piece of garbage. It will negatively influence my future security purchases.

This security bar is very easy to use and a good alternative for providing additional protection. There are questions about how it's installed and its width - this is from the package:

* This security bar adjusts to fit most sliding and hinged doors

* Simple push button adjustment. No tools required.

* High strength steel tube (20-gauge)

* Portable, collapsible to fit most suitcases (**I wouldn't try to bring it inside a carry on**)

* Ideal for home or apartment (entry doors, interior doors for privacy, garage access doors), student dorms and travel

* Limited lifetime guarantee (see your store for details) (**Not sure what it means but keep the receipt**)

For use with hinged doors:

* Non-marring yoke designed to work with most types of door hardware. Can be removed for use with sliding glass doors.

* Pivoting ball joint (assures full contact with the floor)

* Padded foot provides sure grip on most floor surfaces and protects against finish damage.

* For hinged door, adjusts from 30" to 44.5"

* Should not be placed on loose rugs or floor mats

* To install, adjust bar length so padded base is 15-18 inches from bottom of door when yoke end is placed firmly under door knob

* Adjust length by rotating tube until silver button pops up

* Place yoke end tightly against the underside of the knob

* Slide padded base of security bar toward door until snug

For use with sliding glass doors

* Remove non-marrying yoke from end of security bar

* Adjust bar length to fit in the sliding door track

* Allow enough slack to remove the security bar quickly

* For sliding door, adjusts from 27.5" to 42"

For childproofing purposes, a Charley bar is better. If you don't have one, this bar may be better than the typical broomstick but you could consider placing an additional sliding glass door lock on top in case your child figures out how to lift it off the track (not too hard as it's not pressure fitted). In this regard, the Master Lock 251D which had a pressure lever was superior, as it could be wedged firmly high up, out of reach of children.

This is just what I was looking for. A little extra security for my front door. We have tile in the entry way, and when in place it is very secure. To test it out I have tried to open the door with a lot of force, with it in place. It kept the door closed and secure. It is very easy to assemble, adjust and use. Several of my family members have purchased it and love it also. Would buy again.

I am so glad I puchased this security bar. I learned the hard way how well it worked. The first weekend I used it I locked myself out (went out of the garage door and did not have my garage opener with me) and had to climb in through the balcony. The security would not budge and the small opening that was available when we unlocked the door with the key was not large enough to poke anything through to try and dislodge it. This is a great buy in order to get some security. An intruder would literally have to break down the door or break the glass (if you have it on your door) to get in. - Door Lock - Door Stopper - Charlie Bar - Home Security'

Combination Smoke - smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detector

This review is from: Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Talking Alarm (Tools & Hardware)

I've installed installed two of these Kidde brand combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in my elder parents home. I have one in my own home as well and have found them all to be reliable and trouble free.

What attracted me to this model were its many features:

First, it has a low profile, attractive and unobtrusive design.

Second and perhaps most important, it has a voice speaking function that, in addition to the 85db alert horn, will speak out clear warnings: "FIRE, FIRE" or "DANGER: CARBON MONOXIDE". I think that this feature is a terrific addition toward modern life-safety technology. Indeed, you will likely see more voice warning devices in the near future.

We rely on these detectors to warn us, especially at night when we are sleeping. Awakening to this detector from a deep sleep helps orient you quickly by telling you the specific danger -- clearly and unmistakably. Notably, recent studies have shown that children can sleep through traditional smoke detector alarms, but will respond to voice warnings -- which this unit provides. Thus, placed in or near bedrooms this device can be a true lifesaver.

Another favorite feature is ease of installation. It was a breeze and truly could not be simpler. A screwriver is all you need. A small power drill/driver would speed the process, but is not necessary. Two screws into the ceiling or wall and you are done with the mounting bracket. The detector then just clicks in to place with a clockwise flick of the wrist. This is a do-it-yourselfer's dream. It doesn't get any easier!

Battery maintenance is easy too as all you need do is turn the detector counter-clock wise a few clicks, and down it comes. You slide open the battery cover, take out the old batteries and pop in the new. Replace the detector back in the attached ceiling bracket, give it a slight turn and in it goes with a firm click. Done! Easier than screwing in a light bulb.

Finally, the price is right! Under $40 for a unique life-safety device that is quickly installed and easily maintained.

I have elected to use Energizer lithium batteries and replace them every 12 months -- with no problems. You may wish to change the batteries every 6 or 9 months. Duracells would also be a good choice. I personally would not use the cheaper, so called "heavy duty" batteries in a life-safety device.

I should add that I would also suggest that if you have a home with multiple levels or an apartment with several rooms, having a separate stand-alone carbon monoxide detector elsewhere in the house as part of a total home plan would be a wise investment. Kidde also makes a fine combination model that protects against Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas. That unit, which has a digital display, runs on electricity and has a battery back-up system. It plugs in any electric outlet and can stay in the wall socket, or it can be placed flat on a table or dresser.

I would also recommend Kidde's dedicated dual sensor photoelectric/ionization smoke detectors. These dual sensor devices provide maximum warning under fast or slow moving fire conditions. As one never knows what kind of fire could occur, these are the most versatile.

Be sure to test your alarm regularly. REMEMBER that most carbon monoxide detectors NEED TO BE REPLACED about every five to seven years (see manufacturer's guidelines). Similarly, smoke detectors have a useable life span as well. It's usually a little longer than carbon monoxide detectors -- check your manufacturer's guidelines. Kidde KN-COSM-XTR-B Nighthawk Intelligent Alarm, Combination Carbon Monoxide, Fire and Smoke

When I first bought my house, a friend of mine recommended replacing all my smoke detectors with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Smartly, I took his advise and replaced all of them with these.

A couple years later, one evening, my daughter was in bed and me and my wife was just about to head to bed the Kidde detector starts yelling, "Warning - Carbon Monoxide".

Freaked me out. Got everyone out of the house and called 911. Fire department came out and shut the gas off to the appliances and cleared the house. It turned out to be the gas water heater which needed a little maintenance.

It scares me to think of what could have happened if I didn't have this Smoke/Carbon Monoxide detector.

So, I highly recommend this detector for everyone. Really, just get it...

The Kidde KN-COSM-XTR-B Intelligent Alarm, Combination Carbon Monoxide, Fire and Smoke detector is replacing a very similar Kidde alarm that finally died after several years of faithful service.

I looked at "First Alert" alarms as I have heard good things about them years ago (30 years ago), but after reading the reviews on First Alert alarms it became obvious that things have changed and there seemed to be some problems now with them. Apparently they are malfunctioning in a number of ways.

So I stuck with Kidde as it had served me well in the past, and purchased one very similar to the outgoing Kidde. The nice thing about doing that is that the new one fits on the old mount. All I had to do was put the batteries (included) in the new one and twist it onto the old mount and then enjoy the rest of my day! Life is good!

Pete

I've used these products in the past and have always been satisfied. Not only does it tell you if there is a fire or CO issue but it alerts you when battery is low and if there is a malfunction. Easy install and battery replacement.

This appears to be an excellent product combining a fire, smoke, and a carbon monoxide warning system into one, easy to install, sound and voice, unit. Should I ever need the alarm feature, I hope it works as well as the test procedure. Kidde has always produced outstanding products and I'd like to see every home, everywhere, have at least one of these units installed. Also, ordering from Amazon.com, as usual, was very reliable and convenient. - Carbon Monoxide Detector - Smoke Alarms - Alarm - Fire'

Space Saver - storage, kayak

This is the best system for the price! To increase stability to hold the 100 lbs of my 12 ft and 7 ft kayaks--I bought a 12 foot 2X4 and installed it across the top - I made sure to screw this board into all the studs across the wall. This also keeps the kayaks from banging on the wall. Since I have my shorter kayak on top (it made sense to do that since it was lighter and easier to lift) I have void space on either side that i plan to utilize. I might hang my daughters bike by the back wheel--i might hang a shorter step ladder---i have many bulky things to choose from. I hope to get a picture posted somewhere here--it is a green and yellow kayak. Riverside Cartop Carriers Double Kayak Hanger

I was satisfied with the delivery time and the item was pretty much up to my expectations for the price.

The width of the straps were not as wide as I expected for supporting a kayak, normally they are 2 inches whereas these are 1 inch.

The description of the product was "Side release buckles increase ease of loading and unloading", this was also not what I expected.

My experience with webbing straps that have the slide release buckles have a tongue that you depress which allows the webbing to freely slide through the buckle.

These straps had just the usual press in and click to fasten the webbing together and if you wanted to adjust the tension you had to feed more strap through the buckle by changing the angle of the buckle in relation to the strap, not easy to do when you have a kayak hanging there.

In order to cinch up the strap you have to have someone support the weight of the kayak while you pull and feed the strap through the buckle.

Other than that it does the trick , but you get what you pay for so if you are without any help you might want to consider some of the other options on the market that you use to load and unload your kayak your self.

this is a great product for hanging kayaks to a wall or framing. I have two 14'kayaks that I use this for & one of them is a sit on top which is quite heavy. These hangers are made very well & can hold the weight with no problem. - Space Saver - Kayak - Storage - Kayak Racks'

Door Lock - keyless entry, deadbolt

Let me say first off, I've been a Realtor and owner of my own real estate company for 25-years. I know quality and I see new, neat, high-end products on a daily basis. I've opened 1000's of doors, locks and deadbolts over the past 25-years.

Well, I was at the Ft. Lauderdale Home Show this Memorial day weekend. I go every year, and usually find at least one neat, cool item at the show that's a "must have" for the home and buy it or order it if its not available at the show. Well, the Sunnect AP501SN easily fit the bill this year.

So I bought two Sunnect AP501SN Advanced Protection Digital Deadbolt Locks, one for my front door and one of the door leading into the house from the garage. I installed one of them today.

These are heavy, well made, well constructed, nice looking top-shelf deadbolt locks. The quality, fit and finish is second to none.

It was real easy to install where my original existing deadbolt was located, the directions and photos were well written and easy to follow.

What is even more impressive is the technology that went in to designing and building these deadbolts. The Sunnect AP501SN is by far superior to Schlage, Quickset or anything else on the market.

These are the finest digital keypad deadbolts on the market at any price.

Its got a ton of neat features, including the autolock feature, which automatically locks the door after 3-seconds of closing it. Wow, never forget to lock your door, its automatic, unless you don't want to activate this feature, no problem, you can.

The two included access keys (and you don't need to use them)are 21st Century technology. No key hole, therefore no getting key bumped by the bad guys.

The unit has blue/red colored lights and musical tones/sounds that easily communicate with you so you know by both sight and sound how to program the deadbolt for your personal and individual needs and the status of your lock after you complete the install.

This is a 5-star product, and deserving for any homeowner, apartment owner, property manager, as its been approved by this Realtor. Sunnect AP501SN Advanced Protection Digital Deadbolt Lock, Satin Nickel

This is it. Top of the line. There's nowhere to go after this. Impeccable fit and finish. Good looking, sturdy, easy to use, easy to install. Now that I have them in my own home, I can say that the product videos are very accurate representations of what to expect. Watch them. It really is that easy and convenient. The written manual is of similar quality, and clearly explains all the features. My wife was a little concerned about the potential for getting locked out of her house by a crashing computer, but after reading the manual and using them for only a day, she's very comfortable with them. The manual latch on the inside and the 9V terminal on the outside ensure you'll always be able to get in or out. They are a little expensive, but easily pay for themselves the first time you lose a key and DON'T have to call a locksmith. Not to mention the value that comes from knowing they're un-bumpable, and the convenience of being able to hand out temporary codes and keys to house guests, pet sitters, etc.

I will mention one minor snag with installation: the included magnetic strike plates were not the same size as any of the existing strike plates on the doors in my 20-year-old home. (The bolt and bolt plates fit perfectly.) I don't know if things have been standardized since then, or if my builder just didn't follow standards. Some were too large, some too small. Without the magnet, the deadbolts still work, but the more advanced features like auto-lock and alarm are disabled. Fortunately, it is just a magnetic sensor, so simply attaching a tiny neodymium magnet (available online, from hobby stores, or even out of an old hard drive) on the bottom lip of your existing strike plates activates those features without requiring any modifications to the door frame. I just happened to have a bunch of neodymium magnets in my parts box, but if Sunnect had included several sizes of plate, or a neodymium retrofit right in the box, I'd have given them 6 stars for going above and beyond. As is, I'll have to knock them down to "only" 5.

Bottom line, this is as good as it gets, and if you're already interested enough to be reading this, you should probably just click the order button now.

The Good

-Great security

-Easy to use and program entry codes and register keys

-Sleek design and looks just as good in person

-Long battery life, option to hookup 9V if runs out

-Installation was easy with existing door cutouts.

The Bad

-Priced a little high, but well worth the investment.

I first went to Lowes and Home Depot looking for a Deadbolt for my home. I have a 3 and 2 year old children. Babysitter, Maid, and friends are always coming and going and so I was always forgetting to lock the door. One time I found my two children outside since the door wasn't locked and I was busy with my 3 month old. Having such young children makes this household very, very, very busy! After the initial shock of my children being outside, I decided to change the lock. I first bought a lock from Homedepot but it didn't have autolock which was what I was really looking for. They did have one that did but the buttons and lock looked so cheap that I decided to pass. I installed their most expensive one which was around $120 but after two days I decided to order this lock from amazon. As soon as I received it, I could tell a huge difference in locks. This one was a lot heavier and seem more secure than the other lock. It did take me a bit of time to install it because the deadbolt was a different size than my existing one but I love it. On the door jamb side is a magnetic part which knows when the door is closed and auto locks the door for me. It looks ten times better than the home depot one. The only issue I have is that there is only one programable code for the lock. I think. The other was able to handle 20 different codes but I guess it is no big deal for me. I wouldn't be able to tell who opened the door anyway like my alarm company does when I use a code. If I didn't have the alarm, it would be a different story but overall I do love this lock. - Deadbolt - Keyless - Keyless Entry - Keyless Deadbolt'

Panasonic Plasma - panasonic plasma, 3d

I have a 3 year old 50" Panasonic plasma and decided to go to 60". This TV is actually lighter and thinner. Some things to be aware of before purchase include:

1) My 50" had a recessed area in the back for the cable connections and a low profile wall mount worked great. This 60" TV needs clearance for the cables. I have it about 1 inch away from the wall and the cables are smashed at the connection point.

2) My 50" had a matte screen option that I paid a little extra for and really liked. This 60" screen is a little more glossy. I have it in a room with lots of daylight and there is some reflection. The bezel around the screen is high gloss black with the bottom center fading into a brushed silver to highlight the Panasonic logo. The thing I do notice when the TV is off is a few wavy lines of distortion on the semi glossy screen. This distortion appears to be under the front glass. It has absolutely no effect on the picture when the TV is on.

3) TV came in "Standard" mode which is to dark. I put it on "Custom" and set it how I liked it. "Cinema" mode seems to be OK too.

4) Speakers are adequate but you may be disappointed. I hooked it up to a Panasonic receiver. I also have a Panasonic Blu-ray and run everything (including cable box) with a $30 Logitech 300 remote.

No complaints with Amazon delivery. The tracking said it was shipped by a company called "Home Direct". The truck that showed up said "White Glove Movers". Two friendly guys carried the TV into my living room, unboxed and plugged it in. I filled out the questionnaire and they were on their way.

Overall happy with the TV after a week. Panasonic VIERA TC-P60S30 60-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

I love this tv! I hooked my computer up to it and use it as a 60 inch monitor. Movies never looked so good. Watching them off the computer is way better because you get true 1080p without the annoying showtime, movie channel, stars/encore logos and advertisements of upcoming shows at the bottom of the screen. Someone needs to knock sense into these cable companies and remind them that when people pay an additional cost for a premium channel there should not be any ads/logos without question. Plus no cable companies currently offer higher than 720p/1080i. I was looking at the 65 inch and thought.. forget it! since it's "64.7" inches diagonal and the 60 inch is "60.1" diagonal. $1000+ more for 4.6 extra inches is barely noticeable, but the hole in your pocket would be. The built in 20watt speakers are better than you would think. It is always better to have surround sound though, but if you can't do it right away you won't be disappointed by the built in speakers. This Panasonic was the most exciting product I've ordered in years! I highly recommend it!

I use my TV for watching sports, and sports related broadcasts, almost exclusively when using cable.

Blu-Ray DVD movies second... and that's about it. I'm not a gamer at all, and gamers may want LED/LCD anyway.

This TV (for an Amazon price around $1300 w/ free shipping... it's $1700 in Best Buy) is an excellent choice, if not the best choice available for my style use. My extensive research of all brands before buying, ultimately lead me to this TV. I actually waited till this TV was in stock, having first read about it before being available. It's a 2011 model, and incorporates all my needs regarding multiple HDMI connectivity, wireless internet connectivity for NetFlix and other access via the Viera Tools easy IPTV functions. It's easy to set-up, and easy to navigate and control. As is the case with all new large flat screen TV's, the speakers are adequate. If you're thinking of a large home theater TV, you'll probably be running a separate home theater system/ amp/receiver speaker system anyway (or at least you should). Although the factory defaults are good, I just found them a little dark for my room lighting, and liking. Get familiar and experiment with the 'picture mode' settings in the main menu options, and explore the different pre-set options; ie: standard (factory setting), cinema, vivid, game, and custom settings. The good news is you can always press the 'reset to defaults' to clear unwanted changes. This is a great set, at a great price. Sports look awesome; incredibly sharp and clear; and Blu-Ray DVD viewing is just friggin' kewl.

I did a lot of research before I bought this TV and Panasonic was rated the best for this type of tv. I was considering buying plasma when I bought my last big screen tv about 7 years ago, but didn't because they had so many problems then and were much more expensive than other big screens. I decided to buy a 52" Sony CRT big screen tv that died after only 3 1/2 years. I hope this one last longer. Panasonic claims 100,000 viewing hours so we'll see. The problems with plasmas have been corrected and they have better blacks etc. In fact the salesmen at the electronics store that we checked out all recommend plasma. The picture is excellent and the best thing about this tv is the option to stream video directly from the web. We have watched 2 movies from Netflix and the viewing experience was excellent and very convenient. No more waiting for movies to be delivered by mail and having to worry about late fees from the video store. The tv was delivered as promised (actually it came early) and in excellent condition with a 30 day return warranty (they will pickup). Couldn't ask for more. Overall, I am very happy with the whole experience and will recommend Amazon to all my friends.

The tc-p60s30 is a very good plasma tv. For me it is a replacement for a 58inch panasonic plasma tv which was struck by lightening. It's only problem is low sound speakers. This is rectified with a surround sound system.

After years of owning a projection 47" set, I made a decision to step it up to the big times. This Panasonic 60" has all that I need to get the most out of my viewing pleasure. The brightness levels are super! Watching sports is like being there in person.

If you are trying to make a decision between an LCD/LED and this plasma set, go for the plasma! There is no motion drag and the crisp images are hard to beat. I do have the HD enhancement with my cable and I am sure it adds to the picture quality.

If you have the viewing area and wall space, you will get the most "bang for you buck" with this Panasonic. - Panasonic Plasma - 3d'

Cell Phone Car Charger - car charger, droid x

First things first: IF (and that's IF) you get the genuine OEM Motorola charger listed here, the SPN5400/P513/89143N, it works great with modern smart phones like the Motorola Droid, The Incredible, The Google Nexus One, etc. Basically, if your phone has a micro USB connector (and almost all of the newer generation smart phones do), then this is the charger for you.

That said: Not every seller is selling the right item. There are lots of reports of people getting the wrong charger (I've had this happen myself). Your best bet: Amazon, who not only IS selling the correct charger, but has the best price, when you factor in shipping, provided you qualify for free shipping from Amazon (either with Prime, or if your order is > $25).

The Amazon-as-seller listing for this charger can be found here, at least at the time of this review. Search through the sellers to find Amazon. Their price, if you get free shipping from Amazon, is the cheapest, or close to it. And you are guaranteed of getting the correct item, brand new, retail.

OK, that said, here's the rest of my review:

There are so many sketchy sellers selling phone chargers out there, that it can be a bit scary. The problem is that if the charger is poorly made, the output of the charger can be out of spec and can, in some cases, fry the phone you connect to it.

For that reason, when it comes to phone chargers, you should stick to name brands. (They are all made in China, but the name brand ones are usually subject to stricter QA).

When I found this charger on Amazon, SOLD BY AMAZON, I jumped on it. It's a MICRO USB car charger, made for Motorola and sold under the Motorola name, in retail packaging. The rated output is 4.75-5.25V and 950mA.

This charger should work fine with most any phone that uses the MICRO USB connector. The key number to pay attention to is the second one, the rated amperage. This is the MAXIMUM amount of current that the phone can request from the charger. A typical USB port on a PC provides as little as 100mA, and few provide more than 500mA. So this charger should charge your phone faster than when it's connected to a PC. A few phones out now can use up to 1000mA. But that just means they CAN use that amount. If 950mA is provided, they'll still charge, just a bit more slowly.

Note that the amperage (second number) merely tells you how much the charger CAN supply, if requested. The phone itself is responsible for asking for the current. That is to say, if this charger can provide 950mA, but your phone can only use 300mA--no problem. Your phone asks for 300mA and the charger provides all of what is requested. If, on the other hand, your phone can use 1000mA, this charger will provide all it can, which is 950mA--a wee bit less than the max asked for. That's also not a problem; it just means your phone will charge a little bit (not much in this case) more slowly. The rated voltage for this charger is presented in a range of 4.75-5.25V. The "ideal" voltage for a USB charger of any type if 5V. And most chargers for home use are rated right at 5V. But car chargers work in a noisier environment and thus you have the range. This is where a cheapo charger can really do damage, as some of them are poorly regulated and can provide voltages that are WAY out of spec. Again, when you can get a name brand charger from a seller you can trust (Amazon) for such a reasonable price, it's very foolish to consider the cheapo no-names.

This is an excellent quality name brand travel micro USB charger at a price that beats the no-name junk from third party sellers. What's not to like?

BE SURE TO ORDER IT FROM AMAZON AND NOT ONE OF THE THIRD PARTY SELLERS, as some of those have been known to make mistakes with respect to what they ship relative to the listing. I can confirm that Amazon is shipping the P513 /89143N /SPN5400 charger, as pictured.

One last note: This charger is alternatively sold as the P513, the 89143N OR the SPN5400. These numbers all refer to the same charger. A different product number is assigned depending on the channel through which the charger has been sold. But they are all the same. Bosch Power Tools - bosch, impact wrench

I used this to take off and replace all 4 struts/shocks on my car today. My last problem when replacing brakes was that there were SO MANY rusty, corroded and just plain stuck nuts and bolts that the job took FOREVER.

This tool unscrews nasty, stuck-on nuts and bolts like they were held in by wax. There was only one bolt that this tool couldn't get out. I hate that freaking bolt.

I investigated a TON of impact drivers and wrenches before buying this one. The Lowe's tool expert told me that Bosch was the best brand they sell, and this one gets as low as $170 from amazon.com (not marketplace). This one also has the highest torque of the cordless impact wrenches I looked at, and if you ever want to use it as an impact driver there is a $10 adapter.

One complaint: I went through 2.5 batteries today during a long, hard 10 hour job on the car. Didn't matter though cuz the charger takes 30 minutes.

This thin feels sturdy in your hand, you know it's quality. Nicely balance and small enough to get into hard to reach places. Plus the warranty is AMAZING: 3 years!!! Would definitely recommend and buy again. Can't wait to use it again. Bosch 22614 14.4-Volt 1/2-Inch Impactor Cordless Impact Wrench Kit

This impact wrench is amazing. Typically great quality....I have several other Bosch power tools and they are all great as well. This wrench is lightweight, powerful and compact. Great for auto, atv, snowmobile, etc..

The only thing you have to look out for is the plastic case that it comes in. The latches are reversed compared to other cases that I have. It's easy to open it upside down and everything falls out: solution - just mark the box "TOP" and "BOTTOM"......sounds stupid, but it works for me :) I still give it 5 stars...it's the tool that I'm rating.

As a mechanic, it is sometimes not practical to use air tools when doing interior work because of the air hose. I love this little impact for dash work (I use an adapter) because it's so small and quick at removing bolts, nuts, and screws without dragging an air hose into a customer's nice vehicle. Also, this Bosch item was $60 cheaper than Dewalt brand and $100.00 cheaper than Snap-On's 3/8" 14.4 volt Impact! BTW, the Bosch warranty is 2 years on the batteries and 3 years on the gun. Snap-On and Dewalt were only 1 year then you have to pay more $$$. I recommend this highly for it's light weight, power, and compact size.

I am a heavy equipment field mechanic, and this tool works great for the times when you just need to run some bolts in or out but don't want to do it by hand or fire up the air compressor. I have used some cordless impacts in the past and was pleased with them, but this one is just better! The battery seems to stay up forever, and they recharge faster than you could run the next one out! The tool isn't really heavy, but when you hold it, it feels like something with some substance to it. I really like the compact length, because you can get in there and use where you need it. When you add up this, plus the great warranty, and the great price here on Amazon, and its awfully hard to pass up (I couldn't find a better deal!). I would recommend this to anyone.

I bought this impact wrench to work on my old Camry 95 DX. Its a great tool for removing old nuts and bolts. I bled the brakes and replaced brake pads all with smart usage of this wrench. This wrench as the maximum torque rating for its price. I got it for $129.00+free shipping. In the hindsight had I done my research I would've got an impact driver with a chuck to use as impact wrench. I tried finding a chuck to use this impact wrench as impact driver but there's only ONE chuck, Cowan chuck available with any impact driver!!

But for my usage this is a great product and I highly recommend it even for regular usage. Feels sturdy and solid. If you shell a little more get the Dewalt. A good competitor for this one is the Craftsman impact driver.

I bought this tool hoping it would handle some of my basic automotive work on the weekends. This includes taking off lug nuts, caliper bolts, engine plastic cover bots etc. The impact wrench worked very well on the smaller bolts and is very well put together with a handy carrying case. However, on the larger bolts, including most lug nuts, the little Bosch struggled a lot and finally was unable to take the nuts off. I guess that made me a bit wary about keeping it. However, to give it a fair chance, I took the lug nuts off using an air impact wrench and re-tightened them using a standard manual wheel spanner (4 socket type). I then tried removing the nuts using the Bosch and this time too the little Bosch struggled and was unable to loosen the nuts. That was a deal breaker for me, as I wasn't ready to have a small compact impact for the smaller jobs and another larger one for the big boys. Thus, I sold my Bosch and now own a Craftsman C3 19.2 V which does almost every job well (however, it is a little bigger than the compact Bosch). I wouldn't say this is a bad tool. I just feel that you need to define your application well before you buy it. Its great for small, light jobs. Awful for when you need more torque.

If I were to start again I would go with a Bosch 18V model.

I bought this impact wrench to have a maximum torque for lug nuts. I am very happy with the Bosch 22614. It has much more torque than that.

I looked at many other cordless impacts and found this one to be the highest torque at 14.4 volts. Actually, the torque rating of this tool exceeds most all 18 volt impact driver's ratings (not impact wrenches). Ratings are fine, but I wanted to check the torque myself.

I just received the tool today and started checking it out. My review is based on one day of use. It is rated at 147 ft-lbs of torque. Unless you have a 2 ton or more truck, the lug nuts should be torque below this (that's mainly why I bought it). My tire's lug nuts are typically set at 80 to 100 ft-lbs. My Bosch 22614 was able to break a few lugs off my car fairly easily (I didn't know the exact torque as the lugs had been on for a while). I re-torqued the lugs to 100 ft-lbs and the 22614 again loosened the lugs without hesitation. There is plenty of torque in this tool for lug nuts!

I continued testing the torque limits of the Bosch with some larger ½" bolts and nuts in a vise. My torque wrench is limited to 100 ft-lbs, but I was able to tighten bolts above this and the impact wrench could easily break them free. I can confidently say this wrench will easily exceed 100 ft-lbs of torque. The manufactures rating of 147 ft-0lbs is likely a conservative rating IMO. Again, this is the highest in the 14.4 volt class and I don't recall any 18 volt impact drivers much above this!

In my research on cordless impacts wrenches and drivers, I had one concern before purchasing this. It was the Amazon consumer who gave a negative review (At the time of this writing, Amazon has 1 of 12 reviews below 4 stars). SKS gave this tool a 2 star rating. Perhaps SKS had batteries with low charge or bad batteries, but her comment on going to a craftsman tool and my testing makes me now highly suspect of that reviews issues.

If you're still reading this review, I don't know why or why I'm still writing. Anyway, it's April 2011 and Amazon sells this tool for about $200. I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon, but I found it for a much lower price at buckeye tool supply. Use your favorite search engine to find it. I have no association with this other company so use at your own risk, but that's where I got it. - Impact Wrenches - Impact Driver - Impact Wrench - Bosch'

Bamboo Viscose Socks

I purchased these socks as part of upgrading my wardrobe to something a little more professional and refined. My hope was these socks would handle moisture better than previous ones I had purchased and would not sink down during the day as many socks tend to do - especially as they age.

While they do handle moisture somewhat better than my old ones, they are only a marginal improvement. My old ones were simply the cheapest black socks I could find at the time so it was pretty easy for any socks I purchase to be an improvement.

These are overall comfortable socks, but after two weeks of using them, I'm already finding myself having to pull them up several times a day - a ritual I was hoping to avoid for at least a few months. Dockers Mens 3 Pack Bamboo Rayon Texture Socks, Black, One Size

When I first ordered bamboo socks I just wanted to see what they were like. After all, I had never heard of fabrics from bamboo, so I had to see what all the fuss was about.

I first tried bamboo viscose in socks from Docker's about 2 years ago. Amazon didn't yet carry Docker's, so I had to order from Sears. At that time the Dockers bamboo socks were about 80% viscose from bamboo. Without doubt, these were the most comfortable socks I had ever worn. They were too fragile for the dryer though and had to be hung to dry slowly. My only complaint is that the socks all started to develop holes in the heal area about 2 years later. So 80% viscose from bamboo socks were not that durable.

As I went to reorder these socks, twos things changed. Sears no longer has any Dockers bamboo socks --- but thankfully Amazon does!!! I saw that Docker's has changed the formula. These socks are only 40% bamboo rayon --- so although only slightly thinner, I expect them to be significantly more durable than the prior formula - and these can be dried in the dryer!

I am now totally hooked. Bamboo socks are definitely my favorites. They are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They are luxurious beyond description. They wick moisture away from the skin and are both anti-fungal and anti-microbial. Once you try bamboo socks, you won't ever want anything else.

I always had trouble with sweaty feet. Not with these socks. The feet stay dry and thus don't smell. Compared to synthetic materials, these socks just do the trick. I always have them in the dryer and it is absolutely no problem. They keep their size and shape. Also, I had problems with other socks as at the big toe, the nail would just scratch through the material in no time. I wore these socks in my dress shoes where I freqently had that problem and they stood up perfectly. No signs of scratching and no worn-out zones at the heel or the toes.'

3m Respirator - dust, filter

I've been using 3M's 6000 series halfmask with P100 2091 cartridges. I was still inhaling a lot of gas and smoke because the 6000 series has a vent right in the middle and the only thing separating me from the outside air is a thin rubber membrane in the vent. Not so with this respirator. Notice the shield on the center section. It covers that vent, and it makes a huge difference. I also switched to the P100 2097 cartridge, which has the Nuisance level Organic Vapor protection. Boy, what a difference! I am now unable to smell ANY welding fumes while welding. This respirator is also made of a thicker silicone and has a much more comfortable fit than the 6000 series. All in all, a little more money for a LOT more safety, and it all fits under my welding helmet perfectly. 3M 7500 Series Reusable Half-Facepiece; Model 7502; Size: Medium

....and that's exactly what is supposed to happen when you use a 3M 7500 Respirator....Easy to fit...Comfortable (to a point...sometimes there is bit of conflict when I am wearing eye protection, earmuff style hearing protection and the respirator), but whatever very minor discomfort I experience, I know that my lungs are being protected. I did a lot of research, but what sealed the deal for me was the recommendation of Marc Spagnolo (aka the "Wood Whisperer").

After researching respirators and reading many reviews, I decided to go with this one after reading "MeridethJL's" review. It really does work great. I cant smell a thing and I feel very safe welding now. I also do alot of grinding and it also protects me from breathing in all the particals. It is also very comfortable. I went with the #2097 cartridges. I would recommend this to anyone who does welding or grinding.

I bought this mask and a pair of the pink asbestos quality filters.

First of all I use this in my wood shop after I found out that I have an allergy to exotic woods.

The mask itself fits very very well and is super comfortable. I do wear glasses and have had NO issues in seeing. I would highly recommend this one.

This is an excellent mask, far more comfortable than any other mask I've tried, and none of the usual problems with fogging up my safety glasses when I'm in the workshop. I also have pretty bad pollen allergies and I'm miserable if I work in the yard on a Saturday without protection. I graduated to this one after using a simple mask with replaceable cotton (?) filters. It worked well enough against sawdust and pollen but it was uncomfortable to wear so I didn't tend to use it as much as I should. It seems like with life expectancies getting progressively longer, more and more people end up with some form of cancer. I love my woodworking hobby but I don't want to risk my lungs for it.

By the way, it wasn't apparent to me that the round filters like the 2091 and 2097 attach directly to this facepiece without the need for a housing or cartridge of some type. None of the pictures of the filters I saw while browsing showed the back side where the fitting is located. That is convenient but I would prefer a rigid housing around the filters to help protect them from damage. That's just a personal preference.

I also purchased this mask after seeing a review by "The Wood Whisperer". I currently do not have a dust collection system at my shop and have been using a standard dust mask, which works, well, as well as a dust mask can, it offers some protection, but not much. The 3M 7500 series works GREAT! No air enters through the perimeter as there is a nice sized rubber "gasket" that seals it up between your face. Air is exited through the bottom, so no more steamed up glasses, and it is comfortable to wear. And best of all, it's inexpensive. Great product.

I really enjoy the fit with this facemask. This was a recommended buy from thewoodwhisperer.com and I was not disappointed. The lower strap connects with a hook and loop connector so that I don't have to stretch that across my big head. The seal around the mouth and nose is very comfortable and the exhaled breath is directed downward so that safety glasses are not fogged up. I had to purchase the cartridges separately and I got the organic vapor for finishes and the P100 for dust control.

This is a very good product, but it comes in 3 sizes, and you need to know what size to order. I could not find sizing information on the web, so it would be helpful if sizing information was available.

I got this for around the house use. I recently purchased a house and have lots to do.

I have worn it while putting down new attic insulation. Worked great even in the heat. Didn't slip or fog up my glasses or anything. No problems with coughing or anything afterwards which I always seemed to have problems with those cheap white masks. Also didn't seem to heat me up like those did either, probably since they were against/near face as well as trapping your exhaled air.

Also had a mold and just overall nasty basement bathroom problem. So I donned the mask and went to work with the bleach. With the mask on I didn't smell a thing! Again no breathing issue before, during, or after! Just great! Now working on an upstairs bathroom. Again fiberglass and mold issues. Yep darn right I'm using the mask and no problems! I am very happy with this product and have already recommneded it for others.

Purchase the filters that will cover what you are doing and you will be ready to go. This mask stays well placed on my face with no leaks and doesn't change the way I breath at all. I have turned my head up, down, side to side, upside down, everything. I got the medium and it seems to work well for me. I have a longish face I guess, maybe more oval or rectangle. My head size is average, maybe 7 1/8, 7 1/2 hat size. Not sure how to judge size otherwise? - Respirator - Filter - 3m Respirator - Dust'

Tool - Woodworking - tools, bosch

I have been using this router table for a few weeks now and wanted to address some comments from previous reviewers. The table is actually quite easily assembled by simply following the instructions. All holes line up easily if you refrain from tightening the fasteners down all the way until after they are all in place (a recommended procedure for assembling any knock-down item). The mounting plate is easily leveled as well. The hardware used for this purpose looks very much like a threaded insert, so someone who has not read the directions may thread them all the way down, thus preventing adjustment. Also, a magazine review mentioned that the dust collection port interfered with guard adjustment. As it turns out, the dust port can be attached in two different orientations, one of which does not interfere with the guard adjustment. I found two things on the down side, both fairly minor. The plastic edge aroung the perimeter of the table was slightly proud of the table surface in a few places, but is easily leveled with a block plane. And the outlet on the inside of the table is difficult to see when plugging in the router. Bosch RA1171 Cabinet Style Router Table

I did not experience the problems prior reviewers had. I was able to perfectly level the plate with the tabletop as delivered, and the kit assembled fine without any quality issues. I'd prefer it had a larger surface area, which is why I give it 4 stars, but the nice feature is the enclosed cabinet to help mute the router noise. I bought the undertable bracket mount with the above-table adjustment capability, and all works great.

I purchased this table along with a Bosch Router Combo set Bosch 1617EVSPK 2.25-HP Combination Plunge & Fixed-Base Router Pack and dedicated base Bosch RA1165 Undertable Router Base with Above Table Hex Key. I've had it in operation for about a week, and am really enjoying the unit.

Assembly went pretty well. I didn't experience some of the issues others did when they assembled their units. I did find that I ended up with a nice assortment of extra bolts, nuts, etc, which for the life of me I can't figure out where they would have gone. Suffice to say, every hole is filled and it hasn't collapsed yet. No real fit or finish issues with the table. I really like the cast aluminum plate, which is predrilled for many routers. The base I purchased fit perfectly, with a dedicated hole for the above table adjustment screw. Several competing tables use plastic plates -- as heavy as a full size router is, deflection over time is a risk.

In operation, I've been fairly pleased. The above table dust capture works well (I have an older Sears 2.25hp shop vac) once you adjust the fence boards around the router bit. The base dust collection really is not very good -- there's too many cracks and such around the door and screw holes, so there isn't much of a draft through the back hole. I think you really would benefit from the dust collection accessory for this router in real use Bosch RA1172AT Router Dust Extraction Hood Kit; if you get it, you could fit a smaller diameter hose through the base hole and connect to the router dust hood. This will make a happier environment for your router, also.

One other gremlin of note - when using this router / base combination, the motor switch and speed control facing the back of the cabinet. The switch isn't a major issue - use the switch on the router table -- but if you are setting the speed, you'll have to rely on feel, or take the router out and set it, then put it back in.

All in all, a very nice set, which I'm sure I'll get lots of use from.

I picked up this router table in a jam. Went to Lowes and it was the only Bosch table they had available, and I have a Bosch router... also I generally like their tools very much. Out of the box assembly was necessary, was a bit clumsy and not so intuitive, but not terrible. It can be figured out, just should not need so much figuring.

I was initially wary of the chip core construction. To my surprise, the base of the table was quite sturdy. The problems started with the placing of the plate in the table top. Stupid construction where you have to put 4 large screws into the chip core (I think for leveling purposes too). Then you attach the plate with 4 screws into the other screws. Eventually the screws turn together, making the top fairly impossible to adjust and secure. If you cross thread the screws togther - you need to disassemble the entire plate including successfully secured screws to wrench the 2 pieces apart. Eventually the chip core loosens in any case - this will be a failure point that will render the table useless.

Also was missing 2 screws to secure the vaccum port on to the back of the guide. The were in the instructions, just not in the box.

The whole purpose of a routing table is to pass wood across. The cheap laminate top could not manage this, as the plastic border around the table top was sticking up above the table surface. Passing wood would catch on the edge and start to peel it off. We trimmed this with a razor.

The clamps/featherboards on the guide started to loosen and eventually stripped. They are cheap plastic handles with a screw socket in the base (should be metal threaded socket). You pass the screw through the guide or hole and tighten it into the handle.

This is my failure list so far within 14 days of use. The table is good if you never plan to actually use it. I do nto even think this is a Bosch product, but some Chinese OEM (sears sells the same unit branded Craftsman). Point is this unit is junk and devalues the brand. Good thing they have a 30 day return policy - this item will be going back. Ordered the 1181 with the stand hopefully it will be better, cannot be worse.

I purchased a Bosch RA1171 router table after looking at the Craftsman model 26608 and the Bench Dog ProTop Contractor. The Craftsman, a close cousin to the RA1171, was the same price but didn't include featherboards or a starting pin, had a plastic (instead of aluminum) router mounting plate, and its fence wasn't as tall. The Bench Dog was highly recommended by lots of users, but was more expensive and didn't include an external cabinet-mounted power switch. The Bench Dog would have cost $250 with shipping and an add-on power switch. The RA1171 was $160 with free shipping. Since I don't plan to make heavy use of the router table, I decided to keep my costs low and take a chance on the Bosch. I'm glad I did.

It took an hour and a half to assemble the table and install my Bosch 1617EVS router. Assembly was straightforward, there were no missing parts, and the instructions were easy to follow. All parts fit perfectly without the need for adjustments or fussing. The only glitch was that the vinyl edge trim around the table top was a little too tall, creating a lip. This was easily trimmed with a utility knife.

There's enough room (just barely) inside the cabinet to adjust the router speed, change router bits, adjust the router height, and change the collet, all while the router is still mounted to the table.

For dust collection, I attached 2.5" diameter reducers to the ends of 4" diameter hoses on my Delta 50-760. One of the reducers attached easily to the dust port in the cabinet. The dust port on the fence was a problem because the port is located too close to the table top; it won't allow a 2.5" reducer to be connected. Flipping the port to a vertical orientation didn't help. I had to scrounge around at a hardware store until I finally discovered a 2.5" rubber plumber's coupler that was 4" long. This was perfectly sized to move my reducer away from the table top. The designers at Bosch should have known better than to design the fence dust port this way.

I'm happy with the dust collection. On small roundover cuts with the stock pressed against the fence, there was no visible dust kicked out. On heavier roundover cuts using the guide pin (with the fence several inches away) the results were pretty good, although some wood chips escaped.

After using the RA1171 several times over a six-month period, I've noticed a design flaw that makes it difficult to properly level the router mounting plate. At each corner of the router mounting plate, there is a special fastener that does dual duty by setting the height of the mounting plate and also acting as a receptacle for the hold-down screw. While this is an ingenious way of saving money for the manufacturer, it leads to problems if the fasteners are less than perfect. To level the plate, a hex key is inserted into the leveling pads at each corner and then turned to raise or lower the plate. Once the plate is level, machine screws are dropped through a hole in each corner and driven into a threaded hole in the middle of each leveling pad. In theory, the torque to tighten the screw will be less than the torque to rotate the leveling pad. "In theory" is the key concept here. For some reason, at one corner the screw was a bit "sticky" and caused the leveling pad to rotate when the screw was driven in. So, after getting the plate perfectly level, I drove in the four corner screws and discovered that the plate was no longer level. After some trial and error, I discovered that switching the "bad" screw to another corner minimized the torque so that the leveling pad did not rotate. Now the plate is perfectly level. (Other solutions to this problem could include lubricating the hold-down machine screws, or adding a drop of Locktite to the external threads on the leveling pad.)

All things considered, I'm very happy with this table. It performs well, has plenty of features and accessories, and the price is low. It does have a few quirks that can be dealt with. Once it's adjusted properly, it works great! I highly recommend it. - Bosch - Woodworking - Router - Tools'
