Relativity - book, physics
This is the best researched biography of the great Italian physicist Enrico Fermi, the last universalist in physics, in what concerns science and education. For the private life of the great man and for the less formal aspects of his life, the best book is "Atoms in Family", by his wife, Laura Fermi. Both are remarkable books. The book by Segre, who himself won the Nobel prize for the first observation of the anti-proton, besides being very well written, has some features of his own. First, there is, in an appendix, a series of letters exchanged between Fermi and Persico, another distinguished physicist, of about the same age, which talk mainly of education:which book to use for thermodynamics (Planck), how to study, progresses in some researches, etc. Second, an interview with a friend of Fermi's father, the engineer Amidei, who had a great influence on the education of teenager Fermi, by lending him books he assumed would be important for his future. Among t! hese books is the Mecanique (mechanics) of Poisson, which remained impressed in Fermi's memory forever. The list of these books, with the dates when they were taken and given back, is there. Fermi's style, the simplicity that comes from deep knowledge, is exemplified in many occasions. Perhaps the best story is that of the malfunctioning of Compton's watch; or the first measurement of the power of the first nuclear explosion, made by Fermi by measurind the displacement caused by the shock wave on little scraps of paper released when the first light from the explosion arrived. I read this book at least ten times. I know I will read it again many times. Enrico Fermi, Physicist
This is an interesting biography for it is written by a friend with same interests and loyalty to each other. No jealosy, no envie but appreciation and loyalty how nice. This is the story of Fermi mostly about his intellectual and social life and not about his private life and that part is in fact covered very nicely by his wife in her beautiful book. Segre without any short cuts describe Fermi, his behaior, his mastery in physics with all important documents reproduced and day by day their successes and few dissappointments. There are certain scientific explanations about the experiments they conducted days in and days out and if you are not into Atomic physics those explanations are just words but even if you do not know what they are doing you still get the pleasure of visualising masters in action. descriptions are very vivid. Hard work is necessary but knowing what you are doing is more important and this book along with the biographies of other master Physisist shows the same. Prof Serge is exteremely good in writing biography, you do not get bored while reading the book. All the surroundings, social and political world conditions are clearly described, showing the conditions these people had to go through and yet was exteremely productive.
Overall, the book "Enrico Fermi Physicist" was very informative and interesting. The long time friend and first graduate of Fermi, Mr. Emilo Segre, stood by Fermi's side for many years. Mr. Serge also wrote the book, and was able to do so in a very all-inclusive manner. Not only does the book teach us everything that Fermi's has accomplished through his long and illustrious career as a physicist, but it also shows us a very human side of this brilliant mind. There are stories about Enrico's childhood dispersed intermittently throughout the book, so we can look at Fermi as a regular person, rather than as a series of brilliant mathematical laws and experiments. Due to the chronological design of the book, we see Enrico grow from a young and furtive mind, with an unrestrained sense of enthusiasm for math and science, into an old and wise master of physics.
I think that Emilio Segre was compelled to write his book on Fermi for several reasons. By reading the book it is very clear that Segre has the utmost respect and appreciation for Fermi because when he describes the man it is in a tone of awe. He spends almost a page later on in the book talking about how impressed everyone was by Fermi, and how the man's brilliant mind warranted respect form all who could see him work. I also think that Segre felt some type of duty, almost a responsibility, to share Fermi's story with the rest of the world because he knew he was better qualified for the task than anyone, thanks to his close relationship with Fermi.
By reading this book one learns of Fermi's classical experiments, which would eventually come to yield the atomic pile, and later help foster the construction of the atom bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II. There is also a myriad of additional scientific details in the book, depicted in confusing and esoteric jargon. Personally, I think the book could have been more simplistic in the explanations of Fermi's work, instead of spending so much time with detailed information of little significance to the average reader. Overall, the book was engrossing, but excess scientific information gets a bit cumbersome later on in the book.
Science buffs who also like a bit of history and want to learn about a scientist's life should read this story. As far as scientists go, I found Enrico Fermi to be one of the more fascinating scientists to ever live. Through reading the book, Fermi is revealed not only as a scientific and mathematical genius, but also a fun loving kid, who was almost expelled from school for a prank he pulled.
I found this entire work to be well written and very informative on both the more personal life of Enrico Fermi, and on his various accomplishments and work regarding radioactivity and physics. Despite being written from a more personal view, as it was authored by a friend, the book maintains its commtittment to detailing the events in his life, including what influenced him and what he in turn influenced. A fascinating tale of a Nobel Prize Winner who worked on the infamous Manhattan Project, this book lists the many discoveries Fermi came upon and what his work later led to in the discovery of producing the fission needed for reactor and atomic weapons. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in this area of physics, and those interested in the people tied to the Manhattan project. As a scientist, Enrico Fermi was an accomplished individual, and this book is able to bring to light the depth of his character and efforts in his respective field. Written from his friend's perspective, the retelling of his life is very well planned and thought out, and I commend the detail Segre put into its creation. With various interviews and detailed accounts of his life, this book is an invaluable resource for understanding more about the atomic bomb and the people who helped bring it to life. One of the most important things books serves to do is to remind American citizens how lucky they are to have gotten such great physicists and scientists to come support this country and how invaluable they are today, as they gave us a chance for the future. - Science - Relativity - Physics - Book'

Travel Games - travel games
This book is excellent for adults who travel by car over long distances. It has games and puzzles that require thought, logic, and creativity. This is *not* a book for children because of the complexity of the games. It is, however, a great book for friends or family who are traveling together. I highly recommend it! Adult on Board: Travel Games for Grown-Ups
I should have paid attention to a previous reviewer. This would more appropriately be titled, "Travel Word Games for Young and Old". I was looking for a travel game specifically geared towards adults- meaning adult themes and content along the same lines as "Scruples". Games that stimulate adult discussions and debates about politics, history, and social values. This is not it.
There are some games that require a more mature brain for the word-logic, but nothing I would consider impossible for young people to play. I doubt I can use this book on my upcoming trip as my fellow travelers enjoy a good debate but perhaps at parties or functions where people are not completely familiar with each other (showers, church functions, company parties) it might be a nice ice breaker.
Book is good for a few ideas but I wished it had more. Seemed like the games were pretty similar. I needed it for senior citizens on a bus and most of these games were geared toward riding in a car with a small group. - Travel Games'

Tv Mounts - home theater component shelf, home theater wall mount
I bought this unit after seeing the reviews of the OmniMount which looked very similar. Below are the steps I took to get a huge bundle of wires cleanly running through the cable channel (will post pics shortly):
1. Place the device on the glass and run the cables through the routing hole.
2. Align the device where it will sit.
3. Mark the cables running through the hole with a line across all of them to mark where they'll be tied together.
4. Remove device, repeat 2,3 for other devices on other platforms.
5. Route all of the cables as previously marked, zip-tie'ing them togther as they work up (or down) the back of the cable channel.
I have the following sitting on the platforms:
1. Mac Mini
2. Panasonic Blu-Ray player
3. HD Tivo
The Tivo is the only device which extends past the glass, however all feet remain on the surface.
Highly recommend this mount - I have 13 various cables going through the channel (coax, power, ethernet, optical audio, dvi), with a little bit more room left. Cheetah Mounts AS3S 3 Shelf Wall Mount Bracket for LCD, LED and Plasma TV with Cable Management System
This is quite possibly the most difficult assembly I have had to go through for a product. The main reason for the difficulty in assembly was because of the poor materials and lax tolerances used in manufacture. For example, there are these plastic spaces used to protect the glass shelves (which are a little too small if you have an Onkyo receiver) from the metal columns, that must be threaded through 2 rods. In my package, the holes in the plastic spacers were actually slightly smaller than required to thread them through the rods. If I tried to force the rods into the holes in the spacers, the spacers cracked due to poor quality plastic. I was left using a lighter to expand the holes to get the rods through. Then, once the rods were through, there are there is a cylindrical protrusion from the holes in the plastic that are supposed to line up with slots in the metal columns. Thats fine except for the space between the 2 holes in the plastic and the 2 slots in the metal columns were off, forcing the plastic pieces to occasionally buckle. Once you finish the assembly, this problem goes away because everything gets tightened together. But honestly, assembly would have been much much much easier if more care in engineering and manufacture were taken. Once the thing was put together, I was pretty happy with it, thats why I give 4 stars to the finished product but 1-2 for assembly and fit and finish.
I ordered This Mount on 01/111 with 2nd day shipping because my birthday was on 01/14/11 so I wanted to have this ready for my birthday, package came on time, but 1 of the parts was missing 1 Metal rod. so I called cheeetah Mounts to complaint about this and asked to send me the missing metal Rod Overnight, because i have mu birthday on friday, they did it and ship it overnight THANKS A LOT i was able to installed Friday afternoon, installation was very easy and final result was great you can see the picture uploaded here mine is the TV on orange wall
I am overall very happy with this product. It's very well built, all aluminum column and thick glass shelves. It's a very sturdy product.
The assembly was quick and easy, took all of 10 minutes before I was ready to start mounting. As other reviewers stated you do need a second person. I could have attempted it alone but it would have surely been frustrating trying to hold the all three shelves steady and screw the rod together would be quite a task. Mounting on the wall was straight forward but again required two people, one to hold and one to secure the shelf to the wall mount.
My receiver barley fits on the self like some other reviews i read. It's a standard Dolby digital 5.1 standalone receiver. about 3 years old. The feet are on it completely so that's all that really matters i guess. I don't know that I would want the selves much larger, they stick out from the wall quite a bit as it is.
I have a receiver, DirecTV HD DVR, PS3 and a Wii on the shelf system and they fit nicely with all the cables running through the cable management channel with room to spare. I think there is enough room left to squeeze even a power plug through there with a little work. My cable count is 2x HDMI (FLAT), 1x Optical, 1x Coax Audio, 6x standard gauge speaker wire, 1x Coax Satellite cable, 1x Wii component cable, 4x power cords for each of the 4 devices.
Also one other thing, I bought this to mount next to my TV on the wall not under it. I was worried that it would look funny since the TV is supposed to cover the top, but since I have a ledge around my basement wall I can't mount it below the TV. It looks quite nice as a stand alone wall shelf just to the left.
All in all i'm a happy customer! - Home Theater Component Shelf - Audio-video Shelving - Wall Mounted - Home Theater Wall Mount'

Quality - gold toe, cotton
Gold Toe makes an excellent sock and their "Men's Metropolitan Dress Sock" is no exception. The socks are remarkably comfortable; they are not thick and they are not too thin just as other reviewers noted. They almost never "bunch up" inside my shoes as I walk around and they are very much worth the price. They last longer so the long life of these socks justifies the slightly higher price.
I also like the design of the toe section actually being gold colored fabric. Amazon points out that these socks come in your choice of four different colors: black, charcoal, brown and navy blue. The safest, most conservative choice for the corporate office is the black color; but the other colors come in handy too depending on your work/play "dress code."
These socks can easily be washed in any washer or dryer--but I would heed the manufacturer's warning about not drying them at a high temperature. High temperatures in the clothes dryer cause these socks to wear out faster. They will stretch more and become much looser on your feet.
The socks fit shoe sizes 7 through 12 so it's almost one size fits all. Very good!
Overall, Gold Toe is the brand to buy if you want good quality, long lasting socks. The "Metropolitan Dress Socks" for men match any attire and they can even be worn in bed on those really cold nights to keep your feet warm!
Highly recommended! May you wear them in good health! SMILE Gold Toe Men's Metropolitan Dress Sock, Black, 3-Pack Sock Size 10-13
The Metropolitan socks are thin and fairly comfy, but they sag on the calves very easily. I pulled them up all the way and wore them for about 3 minutes walking down the street. They were already sagging down to my ankles! They are not tight at all.
I'm 5'8" and bought the "one size" sock. I'm in good shape and my calves are neither fat or sculpted.
For $15/3-pair, I might as well have gotten a $5 3-pack of saggy dress socks at Walgreens.
Great socks.... They dont get much better than Gold Toe brand dress sock. I have been buy these socks for years and they last for ever... Any other dress sock I buy fades in two or three months. 100% worth the money.
If you have an Outlet Mall in your area most all of them have a sock/underware store. You can get these same socks for half the price. They are still worth the Amazon price
While these socks are very well made and overall a solid product, I agree that they do sag very easily and don't have very good elastic support like some other brands. These have the standard "ring" at the top to tighten around your calf, but unlike some other dress socks, they don't have the elastic tightness throughout the calf-area to support the sock from your ankle to your upper calf. Not a big deal, just a pain to have to pull up my socks repeatedly throughout the day.
Otherwise, be careful to combine these socks with uncomfortable shoes. Matched with comfortable shoes, these socks are great -- they're very breathable and feel good on your feet when you're walking or sitting at your desk. Matched with uncomfortable/mis-sized shoes, they are a nightmare. It's like wearing very thin sandpaper for socks -- they will grind on the balls of your feet and burn calluses into your skin. So, just be careful.
I have been wearing gold toe socks for about 15 years now, but as other folks have pointed out, they don't seem to last long at all anymore. They don't get holes, but the heal seems to wear away pretty quickly (I just use them for work, no running or anything) I did notice that with this last set of socks I bought that they are no longer being make in the USA. I think they may have changed up the material being used at the same time. - Gold Toe - Quality - Socks - Cotton'

Photography - memory card, 8gb
I use these memory cards with my DSLR camera and need the speed to minimize buffering effect in multi-shot modes. These cards perform perfectly every time. My camera is a 15.1 MP camera and each of these cards can hold roughly 1200 maximum quality .jpeg files or nearly 450 RAW images before I need to swap in a new SDHC card. I would definately purchase these cards again. SanDisk has consistently provided the quality I rely on for my photo shoots. SanDisk 8GB Extreme SDHC Class 10 High Performance Memory Card (SDSDX3-008G, Bulk Package)
The product is really worth of the money.
The Transcend card which is free with Canon T2i camera I bought is OK.
But when I am taking lots of picture continuously, the Transcend will pause a lot for buffering.
But the Sandisk will keep going without any problems.
If the price drop a little bid will be much better :)
I have ordered two of these cards from Straight Trading. One of them was dead on arrival. I could take a few photos, but when I wanted to review them my D7000 showed a "card error". I tried reformatting it in the camera, and with my card reader with the computer. This made the camera record images again, but upon reviewing them it died again. The second card was working so far, but who knows for how long? I called Amazon (fulfilled by Amazon) and they took both cards back. (The camera is fine, have shot >1000 photos on a Transcend card.)
I have no idea how to identify fake cards, but is it possible that some of these low priced SanDisks are not originals? If anyone has more info on this I would like to hear it. I wouldn't think SanDisk's QA would let this card pass.
I have purchased three SanDisk 8GB Extreme SDHC Class Ten High Performance memory cards for my new Nikon DSLR and am very pleased with their performance. The D7000 shoots 16.2MP @ up to 6 fps, as well as full 1080p video. These cards have a fast transfer rate (up to 30MB/s) and allow me to rattle off a series of high speed shots - burst rates of 15 frames in JPEG High and 10 frames in RAW + JPEG High according to my camera - without worrying that I will miss an opportunity. I have actually shot continuously for around 30 frames (JPEG) without any failure, although I haven't done any high speed photography in RAW format just yet.
I have heard that the next generation of high performance SDHC cards will arrive soon, but for now these cards work very well and the price is fair for such a fast, solid & static shielded card. I definitely trust SanDisk products to perform flawlessly, I may get a couple more before my upcoming vacation to Yellowstone.
I bought this for my Canon T2i to take pictures and shoot 1080p video. I does everything I expect it to do with no lag. Download speeds to my computer are superfast. Dollar for dollar I prefer a quality, lower gig card to a cheap high gig card.
If you have a Canon Rebel T1i, T2i or 60D look no further than this card. I read "all" the reviews and experimented with a class 6 SDHC card (5 seconds of 1080P video b4 buffer btw) and this card does everything you need it to do. Its "exreme"ly fast and it does not pause video to write at any time. Fantastic card and great price on Amazon. - Sandisk - Memory Card - 8gb - Photography'

Medicine Ball - medicine ball, tko
Although I was surprised at how big this medicine ball is - at 11" in diameter, it's larger than a basketball - I'm still very happy with it. It seems well made, with a lightly textured surface that's easy to hang on to without being too abrasive. Part of what makes a medicine ball such an effective exercise tool is the effort it takes to hang on to it and manipulate the bulk of the thing, and the larger size of this ball requires a nice level of exertion to move it around and control it.
When I bought this TKO 12-pound ball, I also ordered a Valeo 8-pound ball, which has some distinct differences. The Valeo was much smaller, at 8.5" in diameter, and the texturing is much deeper, making it easier to grip. I checked the specs on a 12-pound Valeo ball, and it's only 9.5" in diameter. I couldn't find any specs on the TKO, and frankly I had expected it to be about the same size as the Valeo, so when it arrived I was worried that I wouldn't enjoy working with such a large medicine ball.
But as I state in my review of the Valeo ball, I ended up being glad that I got this combination. The larger size of the TKO makes it harder to handle - which is a good thing, because it makes it more of a workout to manipulate it. For exercises like the squat press or medicine-ball curl, I prefer the larger size of the TKO ball, while for exercises more focused on range-of-motion, the smaller Valeo ball is a great tool. All in all, I'm glad I ended up with the combination of one smaller, lighter medicine ball and one bulkier, heavier medicine ball. If you're considering a pair of these, this might be an option to explore. They both seem equally well made, despite their differences.
If you're just looking for a smaller, easy-to-handle ball, go with the Valeo. But if you're looking for the old-school bulk and feel of a big heavy medicine ball, the TKO is an excellent choice. TKO 509RMB Rubberized Medicine Ball 15 lbs
I had an eight pound medicine ball that I played with while watching TV. I reached the point where I could palm it, hold it out straight to the side with my shoulder and toss and catch it with one hand and decided to get a heavier one. The eight pound one was squishy, felt like it had sand inside and mailable. It was also a different brand from this one but I had the notion that they were all that way.
The TKO 15 pound medicine ball is significantly larger, more than three times larger, than my old eight pound ball. It's about one-and-a-quarter times bigger than a standard men's basketball. It's also extremely rigid, having no give at all. It's definitely heavy enough and I can still fiddle around with it while I watch TV but as medicine balls go I have a hard time understanding why something that weighs less than twice what I already had needs to be three or four times bigger than what I already had.
It's a fine ball. I simply wish it were mailable and a bit smaller. This one feels like I'm tossing a big rock around.
This is a really nice medicine ball at a reasonable price. It's about the size of a soccer ball (some medicine balls are much smaller) and easy to grip. It also has a lifetime guarantee.
I bought one at Meijers for the same price and the material they used scratched very easily and discolored. This one is much better.
I've done wall balls and ball slams with this ball and it is holding up extremely well. Be careful when you slam it on the ground because it does have a pretty good bounce. A great medicine ball at a great price.
I'm a personal trainer and I have my own small studio, so room for equipment is limited. I held off on getting medicine balls because I could always find other things to do, but finally broke down and purchased 15lb, 12lb, 10 and 8lb med balls. I have an outdoor fitness boot camp in the summer and train hockey players, triathletes and physique competitors so I have to have diversity in my training methods. The med balls are perfect for diversity and there's a lot you can do for different sport training. I recommend buying a book to help you put together different workouts to challenge yourself. The are lots of fun and very challenging!
I spent quite a bit of time finding a fairly priced heavy ball for my workouts. None of the sports stores in Boston carry anything over 10 or 12 lbs so this was a great find for me as I prefer a bit more of a challenging workout. The ball seems to sturdily constructed and I doubt I'll have any problems with it in the coming years.. I high recommend this product.
I purchased an 8 LB. medicine ball from a different manufacturer a few years ago from a local sporting goods store. It was filled with sand and very awkward to work with, not always in a good way either. I began looking around for a different brand and style and came across the TKO brand on Amazon. Surprisingly, these med balls are cheaper than anything I have found in town and seemingly get great reviews.
I conduct an outdoor fitness boot camp in the summer, so I use medicine balls often. The 12lb. ball was my first purchase, but I've since ordered the 8lb, 10lb and 15lb. balls. I love them all because they are good quality and can withstand boot camp brutality during our outdoor sessions. I also recommend ordering a few med. ball books so you can learn all of the different exercises. There's a ton of information on the web including youtube videos, but I still like to have something in my hand to refer to.
This medicine ball is excellent. It has the perfect bounce along with at great grip.
The price is also great compared to some of the other brands. Overall, I definitely
recommend this ball to someone who wants to perform a nice variety of medicine ball
exercises. GREAT PRODUCT!!!!
Don't get me wrong, it works, but I wouldn't plan on bouncing it. It almost like it's only halfway filled, i.e. it's hard on one side, and soft like a under-inflated basketball on the other. All my other TKO balls are great though. - Fitness - Core Training Ball - Medicine Ball - Tko'

Thinkbamboo - Needlecraft
I just bought this yarn in Licorice for a pair of socks. It is a very soft blend, the wool in it making it much easier to work with than straight up bamboo. It is also stretchy enough to make a decent ribbing on the cuff. I am using size 2 needles and get 34 sts in 4" (stockinette), a little off from the manufacturer's gauge. The color is just as pictured. Hopefully it will wear well-- it still looked untouched after I knitted and ripped out three gauge swatches with the same piece of yarn. 2 pack of Soft and Slim Color 993 Mint Dark Chocolate
This yarn is very soft, the color is rather nice. This is the first time I've ever worked with yarn of this weight and this yarn very good. It's a little mind boggling to work with yarn this thin, but it's fun and I think in the end it makes for a finer end product.
Frankly, I don't have time to coddle my socks. This is a lovely yarn, a delight to work with, and the colors are very nice, but I saw nothing in the description to mention that little problem. So I bought it for socks, and ended up making a lace scarf instead.'

Gps System Accessories - garmin nuvi, charger
I ordered this along with my Garmin nuvi 765t and it never worked.
Thankfully, Amazon did it's usual superb job of replacing it with just a few mouse clicks.
When the replacement arrived it was of a much simpler design and worked just fine.
Detail:
The original version I got had a slot in the back of the plug-in unit into which various plugs could be inserted to adapt it for the appropriate country/voltage/etc. My guess is that the connection between the adapter and the unit were not good and so it just didn't work.
The replacement unit which I received was made with the North American prongs already built in and no adapter was necessary for use here. The unit was packaged with adapters for UK and European use if needed. The just plug onto the NA prongs.
If you order this, see if you can determine which type will be sent to you or if you get the older-style version try to exchange it. Garmin AC Charger with International Adapters for nüvi
I was happy with this product, the shipping time was quick and the price was great! When I searched for this product in several different stores, it was never available and if I wanted any of the stores to order it in for me, the price was much higher than what I paid for it on Amazon.
The back of the packaging lists: StreetPilot i5, i3, i2, nuvi 680, 670, 610, 370, 360, 310, 270, 260, 250, 200, 250W, 200W. Only by checking the Garmin website for the nuvi 750, and in particular the item number 10-10723-00, was I sure that the AC charger I received was in fact for the nuvi 750. It was a little confusing.
The charger is convenient since I use my Nuvi 650 most frequently as a pedestrian. Who wants to have to get it in and out of the car or keep the computer on for charging? So it is worth the price for me. Product quality is excellent - what can go wrong with a charger? It should have been included with the original purchase along with a carry strap and case since Garmin promotes the Nuvi for handheld use.
Very happy with this product. I charge my Garmin 260w at home and pretty much use it all day without having to hook up the auto power cable.Garmin A/C Power Cable for nüvi Portable GPS Navigators (010-10723-00)
Works fine, allow my Nuvi 760 to be used while charging, instead of going into USB mode.
One thing I have learned by chance is that when you use a standard USB cable to connect to a computer, you can get it to go into non-USB mode like the charger, but it's not always straightforward. I've done it by disconnecting, then reconnecting the cable after a few seconds - I guess it gets confused. - Garmin Nuvi - Garmin Accessories - Charger - Power Cord'
