Blu-ray Disc Players - panasonic, streaming video

The player is great. The menu system is the best I've used in a player and I returned both a Sony BD560 and a Samsung 6500 before getting this unit. Just a few notes for those that might be thinking of getting it this player.

#1 The internet options are extensive, new options to me like Amazon streaming and Skype, mixed with the mainstay apps like Netflix, Pandora, and many more. make this player very attractive to the streaming and online entertainment user.

#2 The firmware the unit currently ships with will not let you get into the Internet streaming apps or anything for that matter until you update the firmware. Updating the firmware from the 1.09 firmware it ships with will not work as of this date via wireless or wired internet connections. The secondary option is to burn the frmware to a disc. This you think would be straight foward, but it isn't. Using Windows 7 or Vista, you MUST create an ISO 9660 ONLY... I went through 3 coasters before this player could properly read the Firmware update disc I created to bring it up to 1.47. Using any other ISO format will fail.

#3, Netflix... I have 2 accounts, one old, one new and active. Got them mixed up during the install process and had my OLD netflix account essentially bound to the unit. No way to empty the cache, or sign-out and login with a new username and password (It doesn't use the code on screen method like a lot of players, you actually log into netflix from the machine) To wipe out the incorrect netflix ID, I had to factory reset the Blu-Ray player. Which meant setting everything up again. My shared drives (You can map a shared folder on your network to play files, very nice) Wireless, everything had to be set up again.

#4 No on board memory. It supports SD cards for Storage for Blu Ray online features and other apps, but it has no storage of its own. I personally found this to be nice, especially given I have many SD cards laying around from 1 to 8 gigs in size. But if you want to take full advantage of extras on Blue Rays, add the cost of an SD card to your price (Or possibly USB thumb drive??? haven't tested) in order to have on-board storage.

This player is fast, has an outstanding menu system. A very reliable network interface (Take note Samsung!) and has some nice next-gen features such as touch-less ejecting, kind of novel, but I did find myself liking it.... having come from the Samsung 6500 just recently, I found the fact that the player keeps you informed with on screen displays as to what it is doing if their are the common loading delays when first starting Blu-Rays for instance, a very nice change from the black of screen of questioning I always had with the Samsung model. And Sony's 560 had a very lame netflix interface so that wasn't an option for me after seeing it, given I use streaming a LOT.

For the 2011 models, I'd like to see the offerings from the competitors before I whole heartily recommend this one, but I'm very happy with my purchase. Panasonic seems to know what they are doing with UI's, UI user Feedback and general tech savyness in their Blu-Ray players. (aside from the current Firmware glitch) Panasonic DMP-BDT210 Integrated-Wi-Fi 3D Blu-ray DVD Player

To give a frame of reference, I replaced a Panasonic BD35 with this Panasonic DMP-BDT210 it is hooked to a Sony HD AV 7.1 receiver and to a Panasonic 50" Plasma TV, and I have a LinkSys Wireless Router (802.11n).

It arrived today and I opened the box at about 6PM, ready for what I expected was going to a long night, just seems to usually work out that way these days, figured it would be issues with getting it on the network, so I started in.

Nothing tricky for my hook-up, just one HDMI connection to the receiver and I used the one that was there from the BD35, and the power cord, that was it for wires.

Put the batts (supplied) in the remote and turned it on, pops up quickly to an Easy Set-Up menu that you can get through in a few seconds and start playing Blu-ray DVD's. I wanted to hook it to the network and I always like to look around at the options, so I opted to go to the other set-up menu.

The Easy Set-up takes you to the option to set up a network connection, if you are not going to use the network features you can just pick no and you are ready to watch a Blu-ray movie. I opted to set-up the network and this is what I thought was going to be the hard part, it asked, wired or wireless, I picked wireless, it found my network in about 15 seconds and put the name on the screen, I picked it and it knew it was a secure/encrypted network connection so it asked for the password, and put up a keyboard to put it in.

Once I gave it the password it started trying to connect to the network, a screen pops up with a number of pass/fail tests it is running, that took another 15 seconds to pass them all.

The rest of set-up can be skipped for the most part depending on your connection to the TV or in my case the player to the receiver and receiver to the TV through HDMI connections, so it knew the capabilities of the TV and set everything right.

If you want to more personalize it or need to set the screen size (standard/wide) then Set-Up offers that an a number of other options, like parental control, the display brightness, a number of audio options and 3D and 2D video options, all in all very nice set of options and again, most never need be messed with if you don't want to, it attempts to optimize itself. (Also, no matter how bad you mess it it, you can just tell it to go back to factory settings and do it again)

After spending about 5 minutes in set-up doing the network and looking around I had to pop in a disc and see how it looked and sounded. I did not really expect a noticable difference from my old one in picture and sound, and perhaps it is just percerption, but both seemed better to me.

However what you notice first is the speed it loads the disc, it is very fast. The BD35 was slow, so slow I would rather watch a bad movie than change discs, I had put in Tron 3D as the first test, killer, video and audio, and effects. Next, I put in Tron in 2D and tried the 2D to 3D, interesting and effective, looked pretty good but I am not a big 3D fan. There are also settings the change the 3D effects.

Next, I went to 2D and again the audio and video were just outstanding, not that the old one was bad at all, this was just better, enough to notice. So for picture and sound it is 5 stars all the way for the price.

The menu navigation is very clean and easy to follow while in the Panasonic menus, and very fast, navigating the disc is also fast, more that quick enough to make those options worth it. So overall navigation and easy of use I have to also give a 5.

Now for something I had not tried before on my TV other than Pay-Per-View via cable, I hit the VeraCast and there was YouTube, Amazon, NetFlix, VuDu, and a bunch of others. I tried out Amazon first and watched a free show, no issues at all. It played perfectly, no picture snags, stops, buffering, audio dropouts, it played as well as from the cable box. Same for NetFlix, the stuff all played fine.

I did notice sluggish menus while on the Internet Movie sites, it was clear that it was not the unit but the sites, and even then by sluggish I mean a few seconds delay on some selections, not like my old unit were somethings could take a few minutes.

So 5 stars on the internet movie, tv, and information features.

I guess no review would be complete with a unit with the ability to wave your hand over the top of the player to open and close the drawer, so here is its honorable mention, it works.

Well my prediction of spending half the night (3 hours) was correct, but it was not in getting it to work, it was watching YouTube and Amazon video's, and parts of a number of movies. A very enjoyable evening.

Overall I give this a solid 5, there was nothing I could find to knock it down, it was easy to set up, easy to use, and outstanding performance and features.

Porter Cable Battery

I think the price on these batteries needs to come down a little bit,I really like my drill ,it does a great job. I could put about 100.00 dollars with the price of the battery and buy a brand new drill and get two new batteries and a charger with it. Porter Cable 8723 14.4-Volt 2.0 Amp Hour NiCd Slide Style Battery

Last time I bought a cheapo replacement battery from TopCell. The battery started losing its charge very quickly after a short time (MUCH shorter than the original Porter Cable battery that came with my drill). So this time I went back to PC. It's been giving reliable performance since then.

Conclusion is that PC quality is worth the extra few bucks.

These factory batteries certainly fall into the catagory of "you get what you pay for"! I have made many mistakes trying to save money only to end up spending more in the end that if I would have just paid for what was required. Especially batteries. You cannot go wrong with this product!

This purchase was made to replace old batteries that are beginning to show their age by requiring charging more often and losing power when used all day on my carpentry job. The new batteries will stay all day and still not need a charge.Porter Cable 8723 14.4-Volt 2.0 Amp Hour NiCad Slide Style Battery

Battery works great. Needed charging as do most new batteries. Packaging was inadequate: box very large for size of battery, air bags were flat, battery loose inside outer box. Plastic cover around battery protected it from damage. Very expensive battery.'

Cotton Underwear

Boss Orange socks are great in my book. They're beautifully made (this style is made in Turkey), soft, and extremely comfortable. Curt socks are a casual ankle sock with a padded sole for extra comfort. The fabric is a blend (80% cotton, 19% polyamid (nylon), and 1% elastine)that combines comfort and excellent moisture management.

Fit is excellent (I'm 12/13 US & 46 Euro), and the cuffs have just enough elastic. I have these in white, gray, & black. All have tasteful orange detailing. Boss Orange socks are on the expensive side, but they are tough to beat and I think they are worth it. Highly recommended. HUGO BOSS Men's Curt Ankle Sock, Navy, One Size'

Major General John B Magruder - battle of williamsburg, peninsula campaign of 1862

Anyone familiar with Colonial Williamsburg will want to learn about this period of its history. Major Civil War figures such as McClellan, Longstreet, Sumner, and Pickett were present, yet the details of the Battle of Williamsburg and the lengthy occupation of the town by Union forces are not widely known. This book compiles the facts and tells the story with excerpts taken directly from the memoirs, journals, and newspaper accounts of those who were there. This is not a fictionalized novel. The movements of the troops are well chronicled, and it is interesting to read the various perspectives on the strategic importance of the Battle of Williamsburg. Anyone interested in Civil War history will treasure the details offered in this book. In my mind, the images of the town's honorable aspirations and its historic significance as represented by the College of William and Mary, Bruton Parish Church, the Mental Asylum, and the care offered the wounded of both sides, were graphically contrasted with the harsh realities of slavery, and a bloody war. Defend This Old Town: Williamsburg During the Civil War

Carol Dubbs wrote an extremely informative and interesting narrative about the old colonial capital of Williamsburg, VA during the Peninsula Campaign/Battle of Williamsburg of the Civil War. People may only view Williamsburg in the context of American colonial history, but the town also played an important role in the early years of the CW. Benjamin Stoddert Ewell, the 16th president of the College of William and Mary and the older brother of Gen. Richard Ewell, served as a colonel in the 32nd Virginia infantry under Gen. "Prince John" Magruder (even though Ewell and other faculty were opposed to the idea of secession), and had the primary responsibility for developing and constructing Fort Magruder and the Williamsburg Line, a line of defensive fortifications across the Virginia Peninsula east of Williamsburg. The bloody Battle of Williamsburg resulted in a draw, but it served as a "trial period" for many soldiers/officers on both sides who would become well known in the years following (Joe Hooker acquired the sobriquet "Fighting Joe", and Winfield S. Hancock became known as "Hancock the Superb" for his 20 mins of fighting during the Battle of Wburg.) Aside from the military history, the book provides a humanistic view of the Williamsburg citizens and how the war impacted their daily lives. Examples: on September 9, 1862, drunken soldiers of the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry set fire to the W&M College Building, purportedly in an attempt to prevent Confederate snipers from using it for cover; Bruton Parish Church was used as a hospital and many Confederate dead were buried in the church yard---a marker/monument stands there today; today's Duke of Gloucester street was known as "Main Street" and some of its notable houses were occupied by Federal and Confederate troops....the Vest House was occupied at different times by George McClellan and Joseph Johnston; Rebecca Ewell (the sister of Richard) invited Phil Kearney (a pre-war acquaintance of Gen. Richard Ewell) to lodge with her in the President's House, across from the Brafferton, shortly after the battle. The book chronicles many interesting details about people, places, and events before, during, and after the occupation of Williamsburg by the Federal army. It is highly recommended for Civil War and history buffs (novices would also enjoy but might need supplemental background information when reading the chapter covering the Battle of Williamsburg as the content may be tedious to read for some.) I also highly recommend viewing the DVD presentation narrated by historian/author John Quarstein called the "Civil War in Hampton Roads" - a four part series. - Major General John B Magruder - Peninsula Campaign Of 1862 - Battle Of Williamsburg'

I wouldn't recommend anybody to buy this item. I tried this item on all my TV and is very poor quality picture. Is very difficult to read any text on the screen. You have to use the zoom option when ever you want to read the text. Even my Son don't like it, when I attached his computer to his TV. It takes awhile to adjust all the options to really get it right and believe me you won't get it the way you wanted. I'm a technician and I deal with video and sound and this item does not perform as advertise. Grandtec PC to TV Video Component ( GXP-2000 )

This unit is junk! In my application, I have a video card with an S video output and a TV with S video as well as hi def component inputs. I bought this unit hoping to improve the S video picture quality I already had. The picture quality was actually worse than the S video hook up. I went thru all of the menus, played with all the settings and couldn't get it to appear better than what I already had with my S video connection. The picture was bowed inward on all 4 sides, the colors were all off, the resolution got no better despite using the component video hook ups. I returned it first thing the following morning. And I've been chomping at the bit to post MY opinion on it and tell others not to be duped.

If your PC includes an S video out on the video card, save yourself $100 and use that. If your PC has the ability to upgrade the video card, save yourself $50 and get one with S video output (around $50 if you look hard enough) and use that.

The ONLY applications where I can see this unit being beneficial is if you don't have an S video input on your TV, forcing you to use a composite or an RF connection (this unit supports any of the 4 types of hook ups) on your TV and / or your pc does not have an AGP slot to support a non-proprietary video card upgrade that includes S video.

I read all the reviews I could find on this unit before making a purchase myself. Although, I didn't find many. Most good, a couple bad... all I can say is the good ones must not have had S video.

Only buy this product if it's your ONLY option!!

Connected converter to my small (14") LCD TV (resolution 640x480) and had a great picture immediately. Text is blurry, but if you want to watch dvd, downloaded movies, or one of the streaming networks (like HULU) on your TV using the component video inputs, it's great. You will still need audio cables since this unit only provides video!

After I purchase some audio cables, I plan to connect this to my 37" LCD & I'll let you know if it's still 4 stars.

I needed a box that could take a VGA signal and convert it to component. More specifically, I needed it to take resolutions HIGHER than 480i (640x480) and convert it to 480i over a component signal. This box does just that. I have my desktop set to 1024x768, and the box takes that, and sends a 480i signal to my TV, the maximum resolution of an SD TV.

This box does NOT take a VGA signal and sent out an HD resolution over component (no 720p, 1080i, or even 1080p). Do not get this box hoping to do more than it can. It won't, and you'll just end up whining on here about how "soft" or blurry the image is. Don't buy this box if you need HD over component!

I'm using this box in a self-built arcade cabinet. That means this box is primarily drawing one thing: games. I knocked it down one star because occasionally the box has v-sync issues and will draw a line down the screen of noticeable tearing. I imagine this has something to do with this box taking a 60Hz refresh rate that the computer is sending out, and converting it to a 30Hz refresh rate for the component signal ON THE FLY and coupled with the fact that it is cheap hardware. Won't happen in anything static, but games with a lot of sideways movement (side scrollers) or 3D games with a lot of movement are going to experience it more frequently than others. It's not bad, it's livable as it's not every moment you're playing, but it does happen and I will knock it a star.

All in all, I would recommend it. These days I'd be hard pressed to understand why anyone would need one outside of what I'm using it for, but, whatever; use it forever you need it for, just know it's limitations and strengths.

I'll bet the three complainers didn't pay attention to the RANGE....30 meters!!! I had this across the house and had the same problem...moved to a PC that was in the next room and the picture (and SOUND!) was perfect. I've also used this in a classroom with SUPER success! I guess reading the instructions is a must?

The picture quality was poor. Poor brightness-contrast. Very poor sharpness. Complete waste of time trying to use this thing to make a HDTV into a computer monitor. Too bad my HDTV only has component video and no VGA input.'

Short Sleeve T-shirt - heavy weight, carhartt

I was very disappointed when I received this shipment! I ordered 5 of these shirts and only 2 of them were the Heavy Weight T-Shirts I have come to expect from Riggs Workwear. The other 3 were light weight flimsy versions of the same shirt! I really hate it when manufactures

of a quality product go cheap, I would much rather them raise their prices to maintain their established level of quality. Most people I know don't mind paying a premium for quality if they get what they expect. RIGGS WORKWEAR by Wrangler Men's Pocket T-Shirt, Safety Green, XX-Large

Some of the reviewers are complaining about these shirts not being as good as they used to be. I really don't see how they could be any more sturdy without being cumbersome. These shirts are the best I have ever owned. BAR NONE! I destroy other T's almost on a weekly basis. My rag bag is full of proof. I don't think these will be included for sometime. BLANK HAPPENS THOUGH!

I love the hell out of these shirts.

For reference, I am 5'10", 280lbs, and I bought the black shirt in 3XLT. This shirt is identical to the shirts with the title: "RIGGS WORKWEAR by Wrangler Men's Big and Tall Pocket T-Shirt" I dont understand the need for 2 links containing some of the same and some different colors, but there you go. On the other link, I bought the burgundy, navy blue, and hunter green.

First, I LOVE the necks, but I know some others might hate them, so I wanted to describe them as best I can -- the collars are a little wider than your average t-shirt collar, but not as wide as a mock neck -- and the neck hole is smaller than your average t-shirt neck hole, which could feel very tight around the neck of a person w/a larger neck size. Like I said, I love that look and feel, but I know some people with larger necks might feel like they are choking.

There is a lot of room in the chest and abdomen and the length on all are pretty consistently long (remember, I got the tall size) -- they all hang down to and cover my butt. The pictures seem to cover the length of the shirt and sleeves pretty accurately, but being a woman, I do not have very broad shoulders so the sleeves hang to *just* past my elbows (vs just above the elbows on the man in the pic).

Also - the black, burgundy & navy blue look a little washed out in the pics I'm seeing on my monitor - like a stonewashed effect - but these shirts are a nice deep dark black, maroon, and blue irl - which is more appealing than what I saw in the pic.

I washed the shirts this evening just after they were delivered and then tossed them in the dryer on reg/med heat for about 30mins - they did a pretty good job of holding their shape and size, but when I buy more (and I will buy more), I will probably flat or hang dry them and just toss them into the dryer for a few mins of softening because I noticed the black shirt lost almost an inch of its length - the others did not. Better to be safe than sorry.

The only thing I didnt like was the cleaning instruction tag - attached inside one of the seams inside at the bottom of each shirt. They scratched against my skin and are the kind of tags you can cut out but you wont get the whole tag. A little annoying, but not enough to make me dislike the whole shirt.

As I said, I am buying several more of these - they have become my new shirt. I also like the little utility loop inside the pocket - would have come in handy in my stage management days!

Highly recommended.

These are some of the better made T-Shirts that I have ever purchased. I like the heavy feel of the material, not cheap like other brands. They are priced a little high, but as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for" fits here and I feel that these T-Shirts will last a long time.

I originally bought these for my dad. When they arrived, I looked at them and they were extremely long. My dad would have never worn them. My husband is taller, so he kept them for himself, and we bought my dad another gift. The quality is good, but the length was totally unexpected. I'm glad I didn't have them delivered directly to my dad.

i was so glad to find this name brand work T shirt, it's heavy weight cotton fabric is durable and soft, the shirt is long for taller builds, and slightly over sized but not by much, i like it as much as the carhart brand

This is a real quality tee shirt. Wears very well but a little bit tight in the neck. Not much shrinkage after a wash and I like wearing them. The colors seem to last and the 100% cotton is durable. I tried other brands but this one is best for me. - Heavy Duty - Pocket T-shirt - Carhartt - Heavy Weight'

Acer Aspire One Battery - laptop batteries, netbook

I purchased this to replace the original 3-cell battery which shipped with the computer. The price was good, the reviews were good, and the customer service was good (fast shipping). I received the battery a few days after Thanksgiving 2009, and followed the enclosed instructions for calibrating the battery capacity, which basically involves putting the new battery in the computer and running it until it is exhausted, followed by a deep charge (overnight). When I put the battery in, the power meter said 7 hours of charge remaining....it did run almost the full 7 hours, and I was happy. I plugged the computer in to charge overnight and the next morning discovered the problem...the battery did not charge. The directions tell you to make sure the battery is seated properly, so I removed and reinstalled the battery, to no avail....it still would not charge.

I have contacted the seller to initiate a refund. I guess it's possible I got a bad battery, but it is disappointing. The product shipped USPS flat rate envelope contained in a padded cardboard box. The outer USPS envelope was torn and one corner was crumpled and patched with USPS tape, but there was no damage to the battery or internal box. I don't think shipping was the cause of the product failure. I will update this review as the return process proceeds.

UPDATE - I received my refund processed through Amazon...no problems with return. I like the merchant and have no problems with their customer service, but decided to go with another brand of battery, which I am relieved to say works well on my netbook. (I'm typing this update on the new battery power!!!) Super-Capacity Li-ion Battery For Acer Aspire One Series replace UM08A31 UM08A51 UM08A71 UM08A72 UM08A73 UM08A74 UM08B31 UM08B71 UM08B72 UM08B73 UM08B74 Laptop Notebook Main Battery [ 7200mAh 9 cells Black ]

The battery arrived earlier than promised (within two or three days), in perfect condition. So far--after charging, discharging completely, and recharging once--the battery performs as advertised, providing 8-9 hours of use, including several WiFi hours, per charge. Its somewhat bulky size adds a little to the dimensions and weight of my tiny netbook (Aspire One, 8.9"), but it enables me to use the computer for the purpose for which I bought it: long bus and train trips.

This battery is amazing. The increased battery life would last you through nearly any trip. Depending on what I'm doing, I'm getting about 8 hours of battery life out of it.

And I like how it's "L" shaped, which allows more airflow underneath which keeps your netbook cooler.

Unfortunately, I had to revise my previously good review...

I received my battery and was happy with it's price and shipping. I did, however, make note that many other customers seemed to be getting a lot more time out of the battery than I was. Hindsight being 20/20 and all...

Well, I have now had the battery for 4 months and have only really used it hard the last couple weeks. I let it run completely down 1 time and it steadfastly refuses to charge now. I suspect that it's just a random bad cell. Not really NewMP3Technologies fault. After all, they have a 1 year warranty on it. Long story short, I have tried 5 times now to contact the company about getting a warranty replacement. They refuse to contact me whatsoever. I inquired at the BBB about them and they are listed as not being in business any longer, however, they are still selling via their website and on Amazon. STAY AWAY FROM THESE GUYS!

First let me start with what I like about this battery. It offers a long run-time (~8 hours on with a portable hard drive connected, brightness high). It raises my netbook and gives it a somewhat more comfortable typing angle as well as more breathing room between the bottom and the surface of whatever its resting on, improving air flow.

Second, I have to point out its flaw that earned the One-star rating. As soon as charging is complete, Windows complains of a critical battery. Odd, because the battery should theoretically be 99%+ after a completed charge, not 0%. Also, the power adapter (which is still plugged in around this time) makes no difference. Windows or my netbook will not detect that it is plugged in.

My netbook will still run like this, but I have no way of monitoring the remaining time or percentage of battery. The only way to fix this is to completely shutdown and remove and then reinsert the battery. Then, I can run from battery with the ability to monitor remaining charge or run from AC. Also, sometimes when I plug in the adapter to recharge the battery, it will charge for a few seconds and then switch back to battery power. A simple unplug-replug fixes that.

Of course, I tried to reproduce these symptoms with a replacement adapter and a car adapter as well as the original battery. I could only reproduce these symptoms when using the new "Super-Capacity" battery. I had no issues whatsoever when using the OEM battery.

I noticed that 'J "Alchemist"' who wrote a review on January 9, 2010 is experiencing the same problems.

I honestly cannot recommend this battery to my friends who own Aspires and am appalled at the lack of Quality Control. A battery should not cause this much difficulty. Who wants to shutdown their computer in the middle of class to "reset" their battery or make a habit of never fully charging your battery. Let alone having to reset the power adapter.

I sent Brainydeal a message today, and I fully expect a replacement.

My only regret is not buying this product sooner.

The size factor is seriously of no consequence at all to me, if anything the weight might be more of an issue, and that is still non-consequential. That's especially so because of the long battery life! Finally makes this netbook truly portable.

In the process of conditioning the battery right now. So far getting about 6 hours with wireless on.

Seller was great with feedback and shipping. I ordered at 1:15 pm and received at around 2pm the next day.

I still think at around 90dollars its a good deal. If you choose 2 day or standard shipping, this item is a steal! - Laptop Batteries - Netbook - Acer Aspire One - Aspire One Battery'

Do It Yourself - modern tips, magazine

Popular Mechanics is a Jack-of-All-Trades Magazine. I have been an avid reader since high school picking up every other issue or so at local newsstands. I only recently finally got smart and picked up a subscription. For the price you can't go wrong. PM is filled with informative articles on everything ranging from new technology, world events, woodworking tips, car care, automotive design, and computers. PM does not delve to deep into any particular subject, rather it gives you a broad view of all of them. In each issue your likely to find tips on how to change and fix a flat tire on your car, plans on how to build wood furniture, reviews on new cars, and reports on upcoming technology. The articles are always interesting and provide enough information to let you do a little more digging if the subject matter sparks your interest. Jay Leno even writes an automotive section that is always enjoyable to read. The product reviews are informative and have helped me with numerous purchases ranging from new cars, snow blowers, power tools, dirt bikes and the like. I would recommend this magazine to anyone interested in any of the mentioned subjects but can't afford 40 different subscriptions to cover them all. Popular Mechanics (1-year auto-renewal)

For me, this magazine has it all: technology, automotive, aviation, boats, home repair, and much more. It gives a great overview of what is happening in many industries and hobbies. I have generally read the entire issue two days after I have received it, and I don't have a lot of free time for reading. One of the best aspects of this magazine is that is does not take itself too seriously. It does a great job creating articles that are informative and detailed, but leaves room for fun and offbeat topics too.Last year Popular Mechanics readers got to follow a PM sponsored NASCAR car. This year they have switched to a top fuel dragster. These articles give you a good behind the sense look at what it takes to race these impressive vehicles. If racing is not your style, checkout the woodworking section where a myriad of woodworking projects are presented. Wondering what is new in the military? Watch for the frequent special articles on the Special Forces and their hardware. This magazine has a great deal to offer! For an all around look at technology and all things mechanical, you can't beat Popular Mechanics!

My rating is for the overall package of magazine and subscription service.

The subscriptions are handled by BuySub and they appear to be totally incompetent. I ordered Popular Mechanics and several other magazine subscriptions. I have an Amazon account, my address is totally correct, I was charged for the subscriptions, and all were fine except the one handled by BuySub ... somehow the goons at BuySub screwed up my address so badly that the USPS refused to deliver the magazine. BuySub/Hearst offers no phone call and their "Contact Us" page doesn't always work, so I had to resort to sending queries via email. I corrected my address and explaind that I was missing 2 issues according to their record of when my subscription started. They responded telling me that they would send only 1 of the 2 issues. They never sent that issue, nor did my subscription resume after I corrected the address. I contacted them again and told them I was now missing 3 issues and told them they needed to send the issues or extend my subscription. They responded with "Your request to cancel your subscription has been received".

TOTAL INCOMPETENCE! I did not request to cancel my subscription, I requested the missing issues or an extension. If they're going to be idiots and cancel my subscription, could they tell me if I'm being reimbursed? I had to respond again, and now I'm going to contact my credit card company and see if they can do anything for me.

NEVER AGAIN will I subscribe to any magazine handled by BuySub. I have wasted a huge amount of time trying to correct the mistakes that THEY made. They took my money right away and didn't deliver. Totally shabby.

11 weeks have gone by and I have yet to recieve an issue. What burns me up is that I have recieved a RE-SUBSCRIBE letter in the mail from the publisher promising to make sure I dont miss an issue if I pay up for ANOTHER year.

WELL... I havn't gotten my FIRST issue yet.

I took a chance on this magazine approximately 1yr. ago and I am not sorry I did. It has a wealth of information covering almost anything mechanical and electrical. The how-to section is always informative and helpful, as well as, educational. I will continue this subscription indefinately.

Sincerely,

Tyrone

Subscription fulfillment on this is very poor. I ordered in July and still haven't received the 1st issue as of the end of October. I called Hearst in September and they told me I should receive the 1st issue in October. In October, they tell me the 1st issue is coming in Decmber and blame Amazon for submitting with a December start date (back in July? and with evidence to the contrary). Either way, can't recommend ordering through Amazon or from this publisher.

2 months have passed since I ordered this and not one issue has been delivered to me.

I did however get a subscription renewal request from Hearst Publications.

That will never happen.

My 1 star rating is for the seller and not the magazine.

I placed an order for a subscription for Popular Mechanics February 9th 2010 and my VISA card was billed immediately (of course). I have not received my first issue. It is now April 3rd. It sounded like a really good deal. Not so much if they won't honor it. It was $13.00 for a two year subscription. Guess I'll have to get after someone and see if they will give me my money back. - Technology - Modern Tips - Magazine - Do It Yourself'

Dogs - Grooming - dogs, dogs - grooming

This book is full of useful information, but unfortunately it is lacking in illustrations or photos that would help the "Dummies" learn from scratch how to bathe, clip, and otherwise groom their dogs. This is too visual/hands on a process to be simply described in words. Dog Grooming For Dummies

This book was a disappointment: was not about grooming your pet to a certain cut, or which parts to do first, blade differences for paws and ears, but more about how to get your dog into a tub or be brushed. Some nice tips on getting nasty things out of fur, but anything more than that, the book seems to recommend going to ask your local pet groomer to teach you. Not helpful for folks looking to undertake seriously grooming their pet. I did try the Everything Dog Grooming book, which was much more helpful.

I own this book personally. I am just starting in the field of Dog Grooming and this book was EXTREMELY helpful. It was very clear to understand what the writer was talking about. I give it two thumbs way up.

This was purchased just in time to supplement the adult Ed. Intro to Pet (dog) Grooming classes (10 hours) at the local JVS.

The class is strictly an INTRO to dog grooming, BUT, was disappointed that instructor/school for our $150 fee did NOT give us an actual book on the subject. We got some printed copies of pages from insructor's book...

DOG GROOMING for DUMMIES is a GREAT source for home groomer want-to-be's.

I think it is well written and not at all boring.

I am glad I got it for I have 2 new pups and two older dogs, and, I I have found out, I can do a LOT more for both me and the dogs' benefit.

Although I used to be a Vet Tech for years & years, I found this book to be very thorough and informative. It explains step by step how to do everything from basic dog handling and bathing; to more specific procedures, as how brush, groom, clip (including which number blades to be using on different areas)as well as addressing the 'how to's' for various breeds. I highly recommend it, especially for a beginner!

When I purchased this item I was hoping for more than I got. It is not breed specific for specific grooming. It is all in general terms and I was looking for more specific tips in grooming. Worth the money if you are looking for general tips in grooming.

Prior to now, I've always had dogs that required only an occasional bath and a brush, but I have a new little one that requires serious maintenance. She's TERRIFIED of anyone else (long story), so I wanted to learn how to groom her at home with less stress for us both. This book has helped us work through some issues -- we're still not perfect, but it's a practical book with real information and helpful tips to give ME the courage to get out those shears and that shampoo and get busy. I recommend it for beginners.Dog Grooming For Dummies (For Dummies (Pets))

I really liked this book. It was helpful to me in all the areas that I needed a grooming book for. The tool recommendations plus the way the book was written itself I found interesting and helpful in grooming my pets at home. - Dogs - Grooming - Dogs - Dog Care - Dog Grooming Book'

Portable Hard Drive - toshiba hard drive, portable hard drive

Very nice case that is well built and looks good. It is a little larger (vertical height) than what you would need for a 2.5" drive. On the other hand the additional 1" space allows for more storage if needed. My WD Elements hard drive fits perfectly under the strap. The main thing is that the case is built solid and will protect your portable hard drive. Drive Logic™ Portable Hard Drive Carrying Case Pouch (Black)

These are well-made. I bought three when ordering a Transcend portable HD, but it is the right size for two of my Lacie HDs as well as another older drive that I rarely use. The case is fairly rigid and the drives and cables have to be quite flat in order to zip the pouch closed. I like the construction and feel this is a good way to store drives that are seldom used as well as to carry a drive in soft-sided luggage or a backpack.

Oyen Digital 1TB External 2.5-in USB 2.0 Mini Portable Hard Drive

I use this case to store my recently purchased Oyen Digital 1TB External harddrive. The sturdiness is outstanding, with a firm case that could withhold pressure around it in the bottom of a backpack, etc. It also has a pouch/pocket on the inside where I can keep my USB cable, as well as a misc. pocket on the exterior for any other accessories. The strap on the inside holds my hard drive inside very snugly so I don't have to worry about it sliding around. The only downfall is it is a lot larger than I expected or would like. It is about the size of a compact grocery store romance novel, and a bit bulky for my 2.5-in drive. Nonetheless, I am willing to trade the bulk and awkward size for the peace of mind in the protection that is offered and the handy storage for my USB cord that isn't found on other cases for external drives.

This HD is what HD ought to be. Took my time using it, but after installing it recently, it turned out to be a marvel. This drive practically installs itself. The big advantage is USB2 power supply, eliminating adaptors, always a pain.

At 11 oz (312g) it is a bit heavy for the shirt pocket, but can be done.

After experiencing it, just bought another 500G one, also from Amazon, which sells them at substantial discount to OEM price.

Amazing service for a fantastic price. Was amazed at how quickly it arrived. Wasn't sure if it

would be a good value for the price but is certainly a GREAT value. Also didn't know if my hard drive would fit but it fit perfectly, seems like just about any size will fit. Will be coming back. - Portable Hard Drive - Toshiba Hard Drive - Hard Drive Cases'

Advanced Elements

I bought a Convertible last year and used it twice, once on a lake and once on a river trip. It paddles fast and tracks straight and has plenty of leg and storage room with just me in it. The back seat was a little hard to recline in during lazy stretches of river but I got fairly comfortable. My chief complaints are the weight, around 60lbs, and the need to pull the floor out and the shell off to get it dried properly and then put it back together and deflate and fold it. But it's obviously a serious, heavy duty piece of equipment that should prove very durable and enjoyable if I don't throw out my back lugging it down to the water.

Edit--Two years and a dozen trips later and I'm still happy with this kayak. It's comfort and stability compared to canoes I float with make river trips doubly enjoyable as I fish out the gear floating downstream and ask how cold the water is while people right their canoes.

On a sandy shore I once removed the spreader bag and seats and put my sleeping bag inside for a cozy, though coffin-like, airbed. Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame Convertible Inflatable Kayak

We just purchased this kayak plus accessories and went on several paddles (river, large lakes, small lakes) in the Eastern Sierra. Here's a little review of each part we got (minus PFDs and paddles):

*The boat is great -- comfortable, sturdy, handled well, pretty easy to set up. It was a pain to clean at the end of our trip mostly because it's hard to dry it out well without fully disassembling it more than you otherwise ever have to. It would be more convenient to have a solid kayak for ease of getting going, but this one fits in the back of our subaru, in our garage, etc. It seems more versatile than other more raft-like inflatable kayaks which seem more appropriate to rivers (but I don't really know).

*The pump -- we got the Advanced Elements hand pump with gauge. The gauge was very useful for determining how much air to put in since it's not always intuitive. The dual-action hand pump is pretty fast and effective. We ended up replacing it because after a hot day in the car the air in the pump pushed the handle out, which was then pushed on by something else in our car, and it melted in an immovable position. Fortunately the brand-free knockoff at the local Rite-Aid was the exact same pump down to nearly matching packaging. So you could save some money by just starting with that.

*The optional zip-on deck: we used this sometimes, not with spray skirts but as a splash deck. Without it the person in back gets a lot of spray from the front person's paddle, and has no sun coverage on the legs. It makes almost no difference for the person in front.

*The stiffening bar: we used this on about half of our trips. It improves tracking, but we didn't have much trouble without it either. Probably most useful for travel on rivers with current or large lakes. The one pain is that it goes under the floor so you have to pull out the seats and floor to put it in and take it out each time you use it. Without it in you can just deflate the kayak, fold the whole thing in half or thirds and stuff it in the back of the car.

*Other: we did not use the bilge pump or kayak sponge we got because you float so high in an inflatable you don't really swamp with water (and you're at no risk of submerging even if you take on some water). But I suppose it's good to have these things. A tiny clip-on dry bag is a nice addition to this boat since the seat-back zipper compartments are pretty useless.

This kayak is the best of both worlds- storable and usable. Yes, it is a bit heavy at 56lbs, but tracks well, is faster than you expect, and is a really good boat. Spent a week on Frenchman's bay in Maine in it and it handles wind, chop, and tides, and tracks very well. Not as knife cutting as a hardshell, but unless you're on a weeklong, open water, island hopping paddle, you won't notice. Extremely durable. Landed on beaches of mussel shells and rock weed and not a scratch.

Everyone came up to it skeptical and to a person walked away, if not impressed, then accepting that it is an actual kayak, not a pool toy. A few asked me if it was a Klepper until they got right up to it.

If you can't store a hardshell or want an extra kayak that you can throw in the trunk for friends, this is a great boat. For the extra fee you can also check it as luggage if you want to paddle in far off locales.

Time to inflate: 35 minutes the first time, 20 every time thereafter.

Time to deflate and pack (not including drying): 25 minutes.

What fits in the bag: Kayak, deck cover, seats, and paddles (4 section).

Must haves: The deck covers which tighten the line a bit and make it a really comfortable paddle.

****EDIT****

This spring I caught a really sharp rock on a Virginia river. When we took the kayak out of the water I noticed a gash in the first layer of the bow of the kayak. No damage deeper, just the protective outer cover. I contacted AE to inquire about a solution. They immediately sent me a patch kit for free! Unbelievable customer service and still an amazing boat. If you're on the fence, jump. This boat rocks.

P.S. We took this with friends and it took the same amount of time for us to inflate as it did to unload and set up their kayak with their family gear.

I purchased this a month ago, and it has seen quite a bit of action. 10 couples with children; my 75 yr old mother and her older sister; my wife and I noodling around a small lake with a camera. You wanna talk to loons? Paddle up to some otters? Get one of these. I just bought another one for my Mom.

Durability does not seem to be an issue. Valves most satisfying. Recommend same brand paddles: a joy to propel, with little wiggle or drift. Weight concern overblown if you aren't going to portage.'
