Martial Arts Books

There is no secret to skill in the martial arts. If you want to get better at something, you have to spend time practicing it. In Solo Training, Loren Christensen provides literally hundreds of solo drills and routines for practicing a wide variety of martial arts skills and developing the physical and mental attributes necessary to apply them effectively when it counts.Although many martial artists may be familiar with a large number of the drills and exercises in the book, I believe that everybody will find dozens of new ways to improve their solo training among the hundreds covered, or ways to make their solo training more interesting. If you're not doing extra training on your own outside of your classes, you should be - you lazy slacker. This book will help to get you started, and keep you motivated. Other books by Loren Christensen you should check out are The Fighter's Fact Book and The Way Alone. Solo Training: The Martial Artist's Guide to Training Alone

Most practitioners think that training in the dojo is fun. Many feel that training by themselves bites. Not only is there no one to help you, there is also no one to motivate you. Regardless, while tandem drills (e.g., bunkai, kumite, randori) are pretty much impossible to do on your own, some things are best practiced outside of formal class, especially where you need to focus on improving deficiencies that may not be shared with the rest of the class. If you really want to progress, you need to be able to effectively train alone.

Loren Christensen's excellent work provides numerous tips, techniques, and exercises to get the most out of your solo training. A common complaint that my new students relate is that they are afraid to train outside of class for fear of learning techniques incorrectly. They think that unlearning bad habits is far worse than doing nothing at all so they do not practice on their own. Believe me, with this fine text even beginners can benefit. There is nothing earth-shattering here, just solid practical advice.

Lawrence Kane

Author of Surviving Armed Assaults, The Way of Kata, and Martial Arts Instruction

This is easily the best martial arts book I have, and I own many. It ranks right up there with Christensen's Fighter's Fact Book. One reviewer said it didn't have a lot of pictures so he couldn't follow. I found the 70 pictures that are in it satisfactory, and his explanations to be absolutely clear. That reviewer may be happier with a picture book, not one that makes the reader think.Christensen is probably the funniest martial arts writer there is. His humor is as disarming as his information is right on and exactly what you want to know. He was an MP in Vietnam and a street cop in Portland, Oregon, so he knows what he is talking about, too. All of his martial arts books are aimed toward the street, meaning his stuff is practical. Solo Training has tons of information that will make your solo workout productive and a real leaning experience. Not only does he give the reader many drills and exercises, but he has provided a dozen complete workouts for you to follow. He shows some techniques that I haven't seen in my 12 years of practice, and he shows subtle variations on the old standbys that makes them even more effective.

I have mixed feelings regarding this book. Personally, I haven't heard of the author prior to picking up a copy of this book. I understand he has quite an audience. I'm sure this audience will find the book a good purchase. However, for those unaware of Mr. Christensen, it will take some time to get used to his writing style and approach to martial arts.

'Solo training' delivers. It's packed with drills and excercises. It motivates you to go out and train alone. It's clear and concise. Reading it, even without actually performing the excercises, gives you insight about fighting.

The author's karate background is dominant. Both in tournaments and actual street fights. Those who wish to train alone who come from different background (other than karate) will find this a bit awkward. Maybe Mr. Christensen shuold've titled his book "The Karatist Guide to Training Alone".

Solo training is a quality book that is helpful, useful for street situations, and much needed, especially for those of us who are not in a buyer's market in martial arts dojos. The criticisms about a lack of pictures is really unnecessary. This book is not intended to be Karate for Kids, a beginners guide, and I really don't need another book showing me how to do a front kick. This is also good, because the book can be used by any striking systems and not limited to just one; kung fu, karate, or Tai Kwon Do. I think this book is a must for teachers, motivated students, and especially people like me who are on a tropical island too far away from a choice dojo at the moment, and have no choice but to train solo. Thank you mr. Christensen

This book is jam-packed full of basic information that any martial artist already knows. Detailed descriptions on how to execute a kick or punch. I was hoping it would touch more on workout routines that I can incorporate. I felt like it was teaching a martial art instead of teaching how to prepare yourself physically for whatever style you may be practicing. There are a lot of good reviews on this book and that is why I purchased it, but it just wasn't what I was expecting.

This is a very good book. Don't look into it though if your a black belt or higher, won't offer too much. This book offers great basic intruction, although it does detail on form, I'd listen to my instructor over this book. It comes from a karate point of view, but the drill are good for all martial art forms. No, there's no great training secrets or anything like that in this book. Any book or person that claims to know a secret of training is lying anyway. These bread and butter (basic) moves and drills will help you become faster and stronger when practiced regualrly. I increased my kicked height and speed, as well as my punching power and speed by using this book.'

Best Comforter Ever - best comforter ever, comforter

I had been looking for a good, affordable down or down alternative comforter for a while. I'd been sleeping with a regular comforter and was tired of having to sleep under a pile of blankets to stay warm.

I came across this comforter and I liked the reviews, so I decided to give it a try.

Man, am I glad that I did!

The first thing that I noticed when I opened the box was how beautiful it was! It's bright white, and the fabric is very soft and smooth, and has just the right amount of crispness to it. The white has a subtle floral pattern to it that is super cute.

The comforter itself is big and fluffy! It is heavy, but in a light way, if that makes sense. It is made with baffle box construction so that all of the filling stays in place. It is well made. It feels like a luxurious down comforter.

It is warm enough that you can sleep under just it and a sheet and stay very toasty. I turn my heat down at night to save money, and I don't like to wear heavy pajamas to bed. With this comforter, I never get cold. Since I got this comforter, I hate to get out of bed in the mornings.

it might be too warm for you if you live in a warm climate, or if you keep your house very warm at night. Also, if you wear very thick pajamas, you might find it too warm. For the rest of us, though, I think it's perfect, and I don't think you can find a better comforter for the price! Beyond Down Gel Fiber Comforter, Full/Queen

Amazon's description of this duvet is accurate in measurements but should be listed as overstuffed. It keeps you comfortable when you're asleep but is on the heavy side. It's a lot thicker than the picture shows but I still think it's a good buy & Amazon does have the shipping weight at 9 lbs. so I expected it to be somewhat heavy. I like the thickness and wish it were a little lighter weight but that's not worth knocking any stars. I would recommend and would purchase again if necessary. VERY SOFT! I was a little worried about putting a flannel cover on it because flannel is bad about pilling but after putting on and taking off a few days later very few pills were left on the duvet and those brushed right off. I haven't tried machine washing yet but will add comments later to let you know how it holds up during the machine cycle. Also the package claims the product has a 10 year warranty, can't remember if this is listed in Amazon's description but is a definite plus.

This comforter is soft and comfortable and well made. However, it's very very warm. We generally keep our house between 65 - 70 degrees F at night and sleep only under this comforter, but almost every night we wake up soaked in sweat because it's so so very hot. The fill rating is not listed anywhere with this product, so it's hard to know what you're getting when you order it. We're ordering a different one with a lower fill rating.

We do not sleep with the heater on in winter and the interior temperature in our house is usually around the mid-50s. My wife bought this comforter after reading all the good reviews but we were disappointed when we unpacked the item. First of all, the fill in each baffle box is extremely uneven. Some are puffy and full. Many are not only thin but lumped to one side of the box, leaving areas with nothing but the two sheet of cover fabric in my hand. Then, many of the stitches across the baffle box did not even sewn through leaving big gaps for the fill materials to migrate. We were just about to return it but instead we decided to skip the hassle and keep it in the guest room.

I got this for my mom, who needed a warm washable comforter -- she's 87 and has parkinson's and the cold pains her. Our only complaint is that the down shifts in the cells, and you have to fluff it to redistribute it.

I bought this comfortor to go with our new duvet, and I was worried that it would be too thick and bulky. Not this one. It's thick enough to fill out the duvet, but thin enough not to overpower the bed. I read reviews that this was a really warm comforter for its thickness, and I agree...it is really really warm. My husband or I are always throwing off the comfortor in the middle of the night...in the winter with no heater going and the ceiling fan on. It's REALLY warm. I like that there are no feathers to poke out and disturb my sleep, and the down gel fiber is really lightweight, making the comforter easy to move in and not get lost. I would highly recommend this for cold sleepers.

My husband and I love this comforter so far. We received it 2 nights ago and have loved every minute we are in bed. We even lowered the heat to 66 so far and we usually have it any where from 69 to 70 degrees. Tonight I am going to go for 65. It has been way below freezing here. I mean in the teens. We are not feeling it at all with this comforter. I am not understanding why some people say it is heavy. It is light and fluffy but keeps you toasty warm. It is very hard to get out of bed in the morning. That is a warning!!!! LOL

So soft and fluffy. It is so inviting every time I pass the bed!!!! Expensive, but it does have a 10 year warranty. Also I was thinking, what if we lost our electric in the winter. This would keep us warm and get us through. A suggestion from me is, don't make your bed right after you get out of it. Everyone perspires while sleeping. No matter what you use to cover and no matter what season it is. Air your bed out by flipping the top part down towards the foot of the bed for at least a 1/2 hour.

I would highly recommend!

Yes, this comforter is very warm and cozy. It is nice knowing this will hold up well after machine washing, since my dog likes to take naps in my bed while I'm at work (tested by Good Housekeeping, and was listed number two for alternative (faux) down comforter). - Down Alternative - Comforter - Warm - Best Comforter Ever'

Best Wii Game - fps, modern warfare

I'll start by saying I have played about 4 hours of multiplayer and the first few missions in single player so far. I will also only talk about the wii specific stuff because Call of Duty 4 has already been positively reviewed a million times and this is the same game. Now to the review.

The Visual end of things is very good for a wii game, I would say better than the Conduit. Its not as pretty as the 360/PS3 version, but if that's your main concern, you shouldn't have bought a wii.

The controls can be customized many ways, so I think it would be hard to find something you didn't like, and in my opinion the wii remote is the best option for fps control on a console.

Sound wise, I don't have a sound system or anything like that but it sounds good to me.

The online multiplayer is the best of its kind on wii. I have encountered little lag so far and the gameplay has been fast and smooth. It takes the fun of World at War for the wii and builds on it.

The only negative things I could say about reflex is that there is no voice chat or spiltscreen multiplayer, neither of which bother me.

I would recommend this game to any fps/action game fan. If you were a fan of World at War for the wii you will love this. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex

The Wii has started to get a fair number of quality first-person shooter (FPS) titles, and Modern Warfare: Reflex has managed to neatly add itself to the list. After having spent several hours with Modern Warfare: Reflex, I can't say this is the best FPS on the system, but it is one of the most enjoyable.

THE PROS:

+++ An entertaining and enjoyable campaign mode

+++ Multi-player supports up to 10 players via Internet

+++ 13 different multi-player modes

+++ Addictive leveling and challenge goals in multi-player

+++ Customizable controls that rival those of The Conduit

+++ Possesses most of the features found in the original PS3/XBox/PC title

THE CONS:

--- Extremely pixelated graphics and kind of ugly in many places. Not even remotely as pretty as the versions found on consoles.

--- Complete lack of voice chat, making team multi-player less enjoyable than it could have otherwise been.

--- Multi-player requires Friend Codes for private matches.

--- Framerate dips can affect precision of aiming

CAMPAIGN MODE: The campaign mode is a very story driven series of levels where you attempt to thwart terrorist attacks. All in all, the campaign mode is very solid and even includes the ability for a second player to pop in and act as a squad mate, shooting enemies and basically providing extra firepower. Squad-mate mode is a nice addition, but I don't find myself terribly excited about it. Thus far my only complaint about the campaign mode is that the first two levels are rather miserable, but the farther I get into the campaign mode, the more I find myself enjoying it. I would recommend the game for the campaign mode alone.

MULTI-PLAYER: This is probably where most people will spend most of their time. Multi-player is addictive, fast and fun. As you complete matches you will level your character up, gaining access to additional features, weapons, and upgrades. The challenge system is very well implemented. If you have played Call of Duty: World at War, the experience is very comparable, except vastly improved. I find the maps to be more enjoyable, the game modes more complete, and a generally improved experience overall. The lack of voice-chat is problematic though and really holds the game back from greatness. The reliance upon the broken Friend Code system is also another huge irritation. If you enjoyed playing some matches with some stranger, good luck ever playing with that particular person again. Nintendo and Activision continue to refuse to provide players with any way of connecting with new friends and acquaintances online.

GRAPHICS: Really kind of ugly with sporadic moments of beauty. Even the cut-scenes are ugly, low-res and pixelated. Once in motion, the game looks decent, especially considering how large the environments are, but framerates sometimes take a nasty hit. That having been said, the game is accomplishing more than most other games attempt on the Wii.

CONTROLS: The controls are very flexible and accurate for the most part. The default control schemes are very serviceable, but I craved some slight differences. Luckily, every single button can be remapped however the player likes, as well as Wii remote and nunchuck gestures. After playing with about 5 or 6 different customized control schemes I finally came up with a button layout that felt amazing. This game could have earned the title of "best FPS controls on the Wii" except for the pointer accuracy is sometimes a little too twitchy and jumpy due to the framerate. Because of this, I'm not sure if I prefer the XBox 360/PS3 controls over the Wii controls.

Comparison to other FPS titles that I own on the Wii:

"Call of Duty: World at War" - Modern Warfare offers a vastly improved experience overall, but the framerate of the previous year's game was definitely smoother.

"Metroid Prime: Trilogy" - Prime offers smoother controls, framerate, and a massive campaign mode that emphasizes exploration over action. Split-screen multi-player only.

"The Conduit" - I think The Conduit offers smoother graphics with prettier effects, comparable controls, but a much weaker campaign mode. Multi-player on the Conduit is less realistic, has fewer modes, but features larger multi-player matches.

"Medal of Honor: Heroes 2" - Similar quality graphics, but vastly improved framerate. 32-player death-matches are available, but the multi-player modes are extremely limited.

If you only own a Wii, this is a must-have title for any FPS fan. The game's pros definitely outweight the cons by a wide margin. On the other hand, if you own an XBox 360 or PS3 as well, I can't really recommend this particular version of the game since the XBox 360 or PS3 versions offer voice chat and are really superior on so many fronts, in addition to currently selling for less than the Wii version. - Fps - Modern Warfare - Wii - Shooter'

Nathan Fillion - crime drama, tv series

Nathan Fillion is brilliant as ABC's new world famous author-turned-pseudo-cop Richard Castle. Behind the veneer of an arrogant celebrity, who seems to have let dozens of best sellers and world acclaim go to his head, Castle is truly a kind-hearted man and a compassionate father. Besides writing, his favorite hobby seems to be irritating Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), the NYPD detective who was in charge of a investigating a string of copy-cat murders modeled after Castle's own murder mystery books. Since he's killed off the main character of his last series, Castle needs new inspiration for his next set of novels, and he finds his muse with the charming but difficult-to-crack detective. The chemistry between Fillion and Katic is astounding, leaving the audience with more to follow than just the murder cases. Unlike most criminal investigation shows, Castle has a heavy focus on humor and the strong development of its characters and their relationships. Not quite a drama and not quite a comedy, this primetime series has elements that appeal to any sensibility. The twisted murder storylines will keep you guessing for the full hour until the conclusion you never expected.

Bonus material for the DVD includes behind the scenes interviews with the stars, out takes, deleted scenes, and more. Strong first season. I'm greatly looking forward to watching this show thrive and burgeon into big-name status. Castle: The Complete First Season

CASTLE is one hell of an entertaining piece of light, fluffy cop television. It's the perfect antidote to those who are wallowing in the dark sewers of cop shows like LAW AND ORDER SVU or CRIMINAL INTENT or the brilliant but extreme THE SHIELD. Creator Andrew Marlowe, perhaps best known as the screenwriter for AIR FORCE ONE, has created a very breezy and incredibly fun cop show that's primary purpose is to counter the altogether too intense police procedurals that the public seems to inhale like cigarette smoke (you know it's not good for you, but you can't help it). He's also added the perfect actor for a show like this: Nathan Fillion. Many people weren't familiar with Fillion's work until he became a cast member of the horrifically awful DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, but before that, he was a key player in what's known as The Whedonverse, starring in the all-too shortlived FIREFLY and also guest-starring in the final season of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. He was also featured in one of Whedon's more recent and brilliant creations, DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG, where he wonderfully plays a shallow, over-confident superhero. He also appeared in another VERY shortlived Fox television show called DRIVE, which was cut down before it could reach its potential. He's been featured in films like the FIREFLY sorta-sequel SERENITY, a wonderful indie splattergore comedy called SLITHER, and some unfortunate direct-to-DVD fare like WATER'S EDGE and WHITE NOISE 2: THE LIGHT. But as he proved with FIREFLY, he has more than enough talent and charisma to carry a show on his own if necessary (even though it wasn't necessary with how great FIREFLY was).

And that's very much the case with CASTLE. As mystery writer Richard Castle, this is his show. Despite some strong supporting performances by actors like Susan Sullivan, who plays his flamboyant, vibrant, and at times, annoying mother, and a sometimes over-her-head Stana Katic as his professional and personal foil, NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, this show and everything great about it is planted rightly and firmly on the charm and talent of Fillion.

The show is very much in the vein of a program like MOONLIGHTING, pitting the goofy yet irrestistably charming lothario against the by-the-book, stalwart, intelligent and sassy and undeniably sexy-but-sexless woman as the two of them get into one wild adventure after another. The thing about this show that gives it perhaps an even stronger catch than a show of this type should is that it has a specific "mythology" arc that will carry it for at least another season; namely the unsolved murder of Beckett's mother, and Castle's determination to solve it, even if it means that he will lose a friend and potential love interest in Beckett.

So I say bring on Season Two, and continue the tone that the show has given us, and don't let it conform to what the "hitmakers" see trending with the too-upsetting cop shows. Keep it easy breezy. And hopefully the show will get the audience it deserves, and Fillion will get more of the opportunities he deserves.

I'll freely admit that the reason I watched the premiere of Castle (and every episode since) is because Nathan "Captain Mal" Fillion is in it. Love the man. LOOOOVE him. He was pitch perfect as the futuristic dashing spaceship captain, a hoot in Dr. Horrible's, and he's got an incredible comedic ability blended with good acting chops and toothsome looks. He's great.

So, finally, we see him get top dog billing on a prime time show on one of networks. He's Rick Castle, a bestselling author who is drawn into a partnership (of sorts) with police detective Kate Beckett played by Stana Katic when murders by a serial killer are based on Castle's novels. She's the reluctant partner, he's having a grand old time (with lots of humor), needling her while also being insightful and helpful due to his myriad connections. (I do enjoy how, as the show progresses, we see how he puts that celebrity of his to good use.) That's the core of the show, the conflict and chemistry between the cop and the writer.

It works because of Fillion's immense personal charm, humor, and snap-crackliness. Stana is fine in her semi-tense, driven, cop-girl who doesn't eat enough way, but the show is Nathan's.

It was nice to see Susan Sullivan of Dharma and Greg fame again, this time as flamboyant mom--oh, those bright outfits, that hair--to Castle. She's good in anything, frankly. We also have a cute if way, way, way too sweet-and-nice daughter to Castle. (Pulease, I haven't met a teen this squeaky nice since Sunday School decades ago. Given grandma's dramatics and dad's wicked sense of humor, where did she come from?)The scenes of daughter and dad tend to be really squishily heartwarming, and that's okay with me. Sometimes, I need that sentimental dose.

The supporting cop cast adds to the fun--watch them enjoy their espresso in the episode where Castle springs for one for the crew.

Whether Katic will be able to keep up is my main worry. She is doing okay, and there are moments when you're glad she's the crankier one, "straight man." But this show will rise or fall on not just Fillion's talent and charisma--and yes, hottienss--but on whether she can really ramp it up and keep the core hot.

If you like a less serious cop show, and you are a fan of Fillion's, you've gotta watch/get CASTLE. - Stana Katic - Castle - Crime Drama - Tv Series'

Grinders - polisher, grinders

I purchased this polisher to finish concrete countertops I poured for my kitchen. I had never used a wet grinder, and the Makita was surprisingly easy to handle. The hose adapter doesn't come with the polisher, but a tool store in town supplied me with that no problem ($2.00 if I remember correctly).

I've used the Flex polisher since I completed my countertop, and I must say that I prefer the Makita. The speed and water supply controls are on the body of the grinder, making it easy to change water pressure and speed as you polish - very important for getting concrete polished right. I've also used this polisher to finish stainless steel and aluminum to a mirror and/or scratch finish. Since these grinders work in a RPM range below the 11-13k of a standard angle grinder, they work great for certain metal polishing pads that require lower RPMs. Makita PW5001C 4-Inch Hook and Loop Electronic Wet Stone Polisher

I bought this grinder and used it to grind and polish a concrete countertop. The grinder works really well. I had no experience at all in grinding and polishing, but this grinder made it easy. The countertop turned out better than I could have hoped.

I used six diamond pads with the grinder (50 grit up to 1500 grit). The grinder comes with a flexible backer pad which works well for grinding and smoothing the concrete (50 grit to 400 grit). But I found a ridid pad (which you have to buy separately) worked better for polishing (800 and 1500 grit).

Based on other reviews, I was a bit worried about the water connection. I did have to spend some time figuring out what kind of connection was needed, but it turned out to be fairly simple. A "quick connect" hose end connector is all that is needed. You can find them in the lawn and garden section of almost any hardware store (I bought one at Home Depot), and it only costs $2 to $5. (Now, why Makita just doesn't include one of these I do not know!) This will connect the grinder to a standard garden hose. You can also get one of these off of Amazon. I put a product link to the connector needed. Quick Connect Hose Outlet End Connector (36918-12)

Other than that, my only complaint about the grinder is that the power on/off switch is a bit tough to use at times. A better trigger mechanism would be nice.

There are several features that I liked on this. The variable speed dial is great. Being able to set it for specific RPMs is mandatory. It's quality is great and so far has held up to my abuse. It has a flexible rubber splash guard on the back that keeps you from getting too wet. Also the water valve is variable which is useful for the lower speed RPM work. It has GFCI built into the power cord which is a must when working with electricity and water. The only downside was having to buy the special adapter for the water hose. I had read where others had made a make-shift solution but I found that the one designed for it is worth the money. It can be bought for about $8 and it has a quick release feature which is key during cleanup. Having nothing to compare this to, as I have only owned this one wet grinder, I like it alot. I have compared it to several others and found that it was the best value out there.

The wet grinder performs great. It maintains its RPM's well even under a heavy load, but unless you have a specialty hardware hardware store in your town, good luck finding a water line quick connect to hook up to it. I was unable to find any place in Nashville that carried a compatible fitting.

Plan on using a scrap piece of garden hose and hose clamp to rig the water feeder.

The polisher came brand new and worked well. There is no water hook up to attach the supply line to the polisher. I checked at several local stores that specalize in either industrial fittings or irrigation and water supplies and none of them could find the odd quick coupler with an external O- ring. So like some of the other reviewers , I cut the end of an old garden hose off, shoved it on the fitting with a hose clamp and got to work. Polisher is simple to use and did a fine job. Discs do wear down fairly quickly. Makita should send the female side of the water quick coupler if they want to supply a good product.

I looked at the other polishers sold for half the price of the PW5001C but it was a mixed bag on the reviews and my current assignment demanded a time constraint. I couldn't afford gear that fell apart or have other mech problems. My tools are Makita for the most part, mostly the engineering, reliability and durability of the tools ... so, it was an easy choice for me.

I used the fastest delivery possible to get the polisher to the site, once it got there, it was outfitted with a quick connector and in the spur of the moment a washing machine line in order to not drag a garden hose around. The polisher was used for creating bull nosing on stone, which it did, easily. One hand operation is possible, for me anyway. I use earplugs, water repellent gear as water does spray around and eye wear. The unit didn't seem loud and it didn't need to be pushed, it worked very nicely on a constant load.

Very pleased with the polisher except for the quick connector part which I still don't understand why is not included at that price and I'm sure, not the only one to note this but easy fix.

I'm doing concrete counter tops next, would love to see how this unit performs.

Note: Quick connectors are easily found at a hardware store and I would advice adding a light weight line to the connector and then, hook to the garden hose to minimize drag.

Works really well and of course makita quality is always pretty good. The soft start is a plus also. If you havent used any soft start tools you won't know what i mean. If you have you know how nice it is.

This is a great tool. You can get something cheaper - but I'd rather buy quality once than junk twice.

Just an FYI - if you plan to use wheels other than hook & loop pads you will need to buy the mounting hardware separately. I use a cupped diamond wheel and had to rob the mounting nuts off of another makita grinder. - Grinders - Polisher'

Restore Silver Plate - e-reader, ebook

This gold plating system really works! It's easy and plates well over sterling silver jewelry and even on costume pieces that the base metal is unknown. Heating the solution in the microwave really helps the process. I used another "dip" type gold plating solution that was not heated first and it did not work as well. This is good stuff for sure. Liquid Gold Plating System, Medallion Gold Plating Immersion System

The tarnished "gold" bracelet for which I purchased the kit did not accept the plating as well as I had hoped. It falls into the category which the product lists as "may turn dark due to having a coating." There was no way for me to know this until actually using the product, so I am disppointed with the result.

I would recommend that before this product is purchased, you are absolutely sure what type of metal your jewelry is made of. Most of us don't know the metal therefore only after using the product will you know if it works or not. $29.99 for a product that you have to experiment with is pretty pricey. So far my experience has been negative.

i bought this months ago on medallion's website and paid via paypal. i have for numerous times contacted medallion for my orders. they have not replied. bogus distributor esp i was ordering from overseas they have taken advantage of me. surprised they are selling their stuff in amazon.

This product works awesome on sterling silver, but there are several other metals they list that will work. Very easy and very quick. I actually had a fun time doing it. But you must read and follow the directions. If you do not, you will be unhappy with the results. If you follow the directions, you will have great results. After I was done plating my sterling silver pieces, I tried a ring of unkown metal. It did exactly what the instructions said would happen. It immediately (within 10 seconds) turned dark, and contaminated the gold plating liquid with flakes and it turned cloudy. but prior to doing that I had already plated 2 sets of earrings and 3 rings with great results. I had so much fun playing with this that I bought the refill and I am searching through all my old jewelry, looking for more items to plate.

To start with I had A hard time figuring how long to put the solution in the microwave to get the correct heat,I boiled away to much liquid learning how to use the product. When L learned it worked fine.It rubs off A bit if you polish it to hard, but all in all it works well.I give it 4 Stars.

I got this kit to touch up costume jewelry where the original gold plating had rubbed off. So far I have used it on the chains of a couple of necklaces and am pleased with the result. I can't say my jewelry looks 'good as new' but it is gold again and looks so, so much better than it did before when the base metal was exposed. The kit is also pretty easy to use. It's neat watching your jewelry turn gold in the solution. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a way to restore costume jewelry. - Kindle Devices - E-reader - Ebook - Re-plate'

Dive Watches - luminox, navy seals

I have several pet peeves as regards watches:

1. Lose their luminescence in the dark

2. No date

3. Band doesn't have correct adjustments.

This watch has it all. With the Luminox illumination technology, I can see the time no matter how long it's been since nightfall. Plus, with the velcro band, I can adjust it to any degree, allowing for infinite adjustments. It is also extremely comfortable, to the point that you will forget you have it on.

This watch does have a date which, although small, can be seen when needed.

I chose model 3903 because the diameter was smaller and less obtrusive. It also has a movable bezel to mark time when needed. Last, but certainly not least, this watch has kept perfect time. Luminox Men's 3903 Original Navy SEAL Dive Watch

This watch is very useful and practical. It is waterproof to 200 meters and shock resistant. Being in the Navy, I wear it every day, and it is an excellent everyday work watch and great during physical training sessions. I recommend it highly to anyone who wants to wear it outdoors to work or play.

Had been looking at the larger LumiNox watches, but considered them to large for my wrist. This particular model (3900 series) is a smaller version of the more well known LumiNox Navy Seal watches. Beautiful colors in the face, with very bright illuminated hands and dial. - Navy Seals - Tritium - Watches - Luminox'

Wireless Smoke Detector - detectors, kidde

I love the idea of this system, and as soon as I found it, I had to order a set for my home and my grandmother's home. They work as advertised. One goes off, and they all go off. Push the mute button on one, and they all silence for a bit.

I feel much safer with them in the house, but the system has one flaw. That is that there are only have 2 models available. One is a wired model that interconnects a wired and interconnected system to the battery powered wireless system, and the other is a battery powered wireless system. Both utilize ionization sensors. There is no battery powered photoelectric option, or better yet, a dual sensor version.

Here is a quote from Amazon's own product description; """This alarm uses ionization sensing technology. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home.""" So Kidde knows that you should have both types, and even "strongly recommends" it, but then does not give an option to wirelessly connect both types.

There is also no wireless CO2 or combustible gas sensor. I suppose you could find wired interconnected versions of those detectors, but that is hardly an easy solution...

I'll say it once more though to emphasize; I feel much safer with this interconnected system than with my previous non-interconnected system!!!

I just wish Kidde would give a little more variety to this otherwise great system.

I have had the system installed for a little over a year now. There have been no false alarms, but they never fail to all go off when one is tested or detects smoke. Batteries lasted about a year. They use 3 AAA batteries each, which they do come with. Kidde 0919-9999/ RF-SM-DC Battery-Operated Smoke Alarm, Wirelessly Interconnectable

I got three of these for my elderly mother, who lives in a beautiful old house and (unfortunately) routinely walks away from the kitchen while she is frying food. I put one in the kitchen, one in the living room and one just outside her bedroom, so she'll be quickly alerted if her frying pan starts to smoke. I've tried breaking her of this dangerous habit, without success. Now at least there is much less chance that things will get out of hand.

The smoke detectors work flawlessly. When one goes off, all of them go off. You don't have to reset each detector, either. Reset any one of them, and they all stop beeping for seven minutes, giving time to clear out the smoke if the problem is minor. They're also piercingly loud.

What a great product. Now you don't have to get an electrician to hardwire smoke alarms together. They also make 110 volt models that are wirelessly networked.

I purchased 4 of these wirelessly interconnected smoke alarms for the 2500sq/ft house that my wife and I are renting. Being in a fairly large house where we often leave doors closed, I felt it was important to have an interconnected system to ensure that we get the earliest (and loudest)notification possible. I would have preferred to have hardwired interconnected smoke alarms, but being as we're renting, I didn't want to start stringing wires all over the house and drilling holes. These Kidde alarms seemed like a perfect fit...they are one of the few wirelessly interconnectable smoke alarms on the market that I can find.

I received the alarms in good order through Amazon Prime 2-day shipping. Setting them up was completely painless. Each alarm has series of small switches on the back of them which is used to "encode" them to talk to only each other. Ensure the coding is identical on the back of all your alarms (PRIOR to putting batteries in), and then put them up like any other smoke alarm. It really is that simple. I did that, tested the alarms a few times...and it worked immediately. Pressing the test button on any of the alarms caused ALL of the alarms to go through the test cycle. Awesome...I felt safer already.

Then, unfortunately, a big problem arose. I own a Skylink SC-1000 Complete Wireless Alarm System, with many additional sensors integrated into it. One of the sensors I use is a Skylink AS-433E Alarm Sensor, which I use to have the smoke alarms trigger my overall security system when smoke is present. This allows me to be notified of the alarms going off, even if no one is home to hear them.

Unfortunately, I came to find out that these smoke alarms operate in the same frequency band as my Skylink Security System...the ISM 902-928MHz band centering on 915. These alarms completely jam all of my security system while they are going off. Not only will it jam the alarm sensor's transmission to the control console, but the also the door sensors, the motion sensors, and the vibration sensors. Basically, it bricks my entire security system. This, obviously, was not acceptable to me. I considered purchasing a competitors equivalent of these alarms, but it appears they also work in the same frequency band. So, I'm returning these alarms, and getting more traditional smoke detectors.

In Short: These alarms provide a great capability. They are easy to install, and seemed to work (for the 24hrs I had them, anyways) as one would expect them to.

HOWEVER...while the Kidde website erroneously says to not worry about RF interference, make sure the RF frequency of these alarms does not interfere with an already existing wireless security system that you may have. If your security system operates in the ISM 902-928 band, these may cause problems. - Detectors - Kidde - Smoke Alarms - Safety'

Inflatable Sailboat - raft, boat

I debated long and hard between getting the Excursion 5 and the Seahawk II. I wanted a boat that I could immediately take out and go rowing, but one that is durable (sometimes there are branches sticking up in the shallow river here) and comfortable. I also wanted to get a boat that I could eventually mount a motor on in the future.

After reading tons of reviews -- and going to the Intex website and other forums -- I bought the Excursion 5 because some forums said the Seahawk II doesn't have motor mount points (this is not true -- it would be nice if Amazon's site would specify this) and some people on here commented that the Excursion 5 is made out of the same "Super-Tough" material as the Seahawk II (this is also not true, but it's very confusing and even the Intex website doesn't make it clear. The Seahawk II is more rigid, can be inflated to higher pressure, and is more puncture-resistant because it is actually a 3-ply system including Super-Tough PVC OVER a nylon fabric layer -- neither Amazon nor Intex website make this clear. I found out through the Cabela's website)

As soon as the Excursion 5 arrived, I realized I had bought the wrong boat for rowing my girlfriend and I around. The boat is too wide and oars too short to really reach into the water well, and the oar locks are fixed in place -- not rotational like the Seahawk II. These two factors make the boat nearly impossible to row.

I immediately ordered the Seahawk II and have taken it out and it is great to row around in (comfy for 2 people, I don't see how you could fit 3.) I thought about what to do with the Excursion 5, and I've decided to keep it because it is a bigger boat and seems like it could be fun to take a larger group (up to 4) people out on it, once I get a motor and mount.

So I want to set the record straight if you are debating between these boats like I was:

1) The Seahawk II is more rigid and durable than any other Intex boats except the Mariner. The Excursion 5 vinyl is nice and thick, but it's still soft and I am still concerned it could rupture if I hit a branch or rock the wrong way.

2) Many of the Intex boats have motor mount setup, including the Seahawk II -- the Excursion 5 can only support up to 1.5 hp because it is not as rigid (the Seahawk II is rated up to 2 hp and Mariner up to 3 hp)

3) The Excursion 5 is a bit bigger, so if you need to fit 3 or more people, it might be the boat for you.

4) Don't expect to go rowing in the Excursion 5. Get a narrower boat, preferably with rotational/swivel oar locks. Maybe if you had 4 people paddling (with an extra set of oars) the Excursion might work okay. Intex Seahawk II Boat Set

A couple of months ago we wanted to go rafting down the Truckee river in Lake Tahoe, but they wanted to charge us $35 per person and it was already late too. So we decided to come back some other time with our own boat and gear. About a month ago, I bought a Seahwak II inflatable boat from Amazon and some life saver vests for my boys. I had no previous experience rafting down a river, so I wanted to be cautious. The weather forecast was more windy and colder than the day before. However, after 3 and a half hours of rafting we made it! There were times when I thought the boat was just gonna break from the rocks and tree branches hanging on the river. Other times when the river became more aggressive we just hold to the boat really hard and the boat did pretty good. I was really impressed that at the end of the trip after hitting rocks, branches and bridges columns the boat looked like new. We saw other boats almost full of water and just about to die, but our boat looked just fine. I would highly recommend this awesome boat.

This is the best inflatable boat. Very stable, i have a minn kota 55lb trolling motor and they are great together (you will need the motor mount, you can make it or buy it). None other boat under 400 can out perform this one, except the Intex Mariner perhap. But that one is too heavy and expensive. However, like an inflatable, rowing is a challenge. If you want this infltables to last, DON'T OVER-INFLATE, DON'T LEAVE IT UNDER THE SUN MORE THAN YOU HAVE TO.

Pros:

-Easy to pump up

-Can sit on sides of boat without tipping over or water getting in

-Can stand up in it though probably not recommended

-Good quality material...survived an entire day of being scraped over large river rocks

-Good for the price

-Large enough for 3 people to be comfortable

Cons

-You won't be getting it back in the bag after you take it out. You will have to buy a bigger bag, or carry/drag it inflated.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

We took this boat over smaller rapids on a river with a lot of rocks. Very sturdy and didn't feel like it was going to turn over at any time.

Overall I think this is a great buy. The only bad thing I can say about it is the bag. - Raft - Boat - Intex - Boating'

Notebook Mouse - mini mouse, notebook mouse

The mouse itself is fine for a laptop. It's small, precise, and responds well. It's a classic "plug and play" style with no directions and limited literature online. The complications with this product occur in the second time that you use it. Every time your computer shuts down, the signal for the USB receiver resets itself. This isn't a huge issue if you store the USB receiver in the mouse (there's a storage spot just under the iMicro logo. When you go to use it again, you simply press the small round button underneath the click wheel, and the USB stick pops out. The mouse powers ups, and voila: your two pieces should be synchronized.

The problem is that some people are not going to pull out the USB stick and put it in the mouse. I sure didn't. Thinking that I needed a software update, I went online and looked for anything that I could on this product. I found no help whatsoever. It was just by accident that I saw the storage spot in the mouse itself (what can I say...this is my first wireless laptop mouse).

If it is not used constantly, the mouse will go into a sleep mode...so once in a while I'll notice a slight lag in its response time. I must emphasize that this lag is "slight".

All in all: I like the mouse, but I hate the lack of information on it. iMicro Optical Wireless Mini Mouse (Red)

A pretty good mouse that totally lacks instructions, whether in the box or at the mfrs. web site. Thanks to others at this site I got it to work and will try to collect what all have said. First, you have to insert two AAA batteries to make it wireless - pull the rear upper cover straight back - look for some grip indentations on the part - and insert the batteries. Second, to turn off the mouse and save the batteries, insert the USB receiver into the mouse's 'trap' door. Press the button on top of the mouse (to the rear of the wheel) to release the USB receiver. To synchronize the mouse and its receiver you must simultaneously press the black button on the mouse's underside and the silvery dimple on the USB receiver, (USB must be plugged in, of course). I believe you just have to hold both down for a second or so and then wait for the two units to find each other; (this worked for me but I can't swear that it will work for you - you might have to keep one or the other or both buttons depressed until you find that they have sync'ed.) After I got them sync'ed they stayed sync'ed, even with the mouse turned off. (Removing the batteries, on the other hand, requires a re-synch.)

The manufacturer doesn't include any sort of setup disk - unfortunate because, at least on my XP Home netbook, the built-in mouse control panel doesn't allow me to define what a button press of the mouse wheel will do - it could be defined as, e.g., a double click or a magnify or ... Perhaps downloading the Microsoft Intellimouse setup disk or Logitech equivalent will enable me to define what a wheel depression will do.

I've only had the mouse for a few days so can't speak to durability or how long the batteries will last. I give it four stars because it's so cheap. On an absolute scale, if price didn't matter, I'd give it three.

I got the mouse over a week ago and this mouse worked at first, but stopped working after the first use. After a 1/2 hour of playing around with the pairing buttons, I finally got it to work. But, it stopped working again the next day. I changed the batteries numerous times, so that isn't the issue.

I purchased this with caution only to find that the product lived up to many that wrote a review - AWFUL. In disgust I threw the product away irritated. Here is a list of my findings:

I use Windows 7 OS

1. The USB transmitter/receiver did not fit into the mouse

2. The sync button on the USB transmitter/receiver was of poor quality and was unresponsive to pressure so you did not know if you made contact

3. No instructions on synchronization. I had to search for one on the internet - I was impressed people took the time to write a set of instructions however in my case it did not work

4. The process of synchronization was tedious and impractical who came up with the idea of simultaneously pushing the sync button on the two devices? (who was the engineer?)

4. I tried the cable (supplied) and this did not work either - unbelievable

5. The mouse looked great and maybe as a paper weight looks cool.

I purchased a Microsoft mouse worked in seconds cost $10 more but worth it.

Finally discovered that the back top of the mouse slides off (note 3 ridges behind top button). 2 AAA batteries later, works fine. Not sure what the bottom button does or the button the the USB part. Store USB piece inside the rear of the mouse to keep them in sync. Battery life to be determined.

I liked everything about these mice (we bought two for two netbooks) until they started shutting down the netbooks. Everything was going fine and suddenly the netbook would just turn off. This happened the first day. We ended up returning them and ordering 2 Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mice Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 - Dragon Fruit Pink, one pink and one red. They work fine with no shutdowns. - Mini Mouse - Mouse - Laptop Mouse - Notebook Mouse'

I'm in love with this shirt! It's made out of very soft and quality material. I'm a guy and I ordered the pink color and even with being secure with my sexuality it took some getting used to. Drinking Fountain Valve

This self closing valve is a great value. I was searching for this type of valve to istall in my outdoor shower for use after returning from the beach. Using this valve in my shower will definitely conserve water. A great product at a very reasonable price. Jones Stephens S05-100 Self-Closing Heavy Duty Shower Valve with Pull Chain, Chrome

Received this valve today and installed it. When I turned the water on had a leak, this was not a drip but a ¼ inch stream. Moved handle a few times to see if there was some thing in the valve. Well go to the store, try to repair with a new/better seal. Would not buy this product again.

was very impressed with valve, does just what I wanted at a very low cost.I used it on a urinal in a little used spare bathroom in basement. Just perfect for this, in spring I'll order another for outside shower to wash off sand from beach. Great product for these applications, alternative was 3 to 6 times the cost.

We looked all over for this sort of valve and here was the best price on a quality unit. We installed for our subdivision pool and it gets a lot of use, has not failed yet. If you yank to hard the lever just resets. No problems.

This is a well made valve but it is 3/4" not 1/2" thread. We made it work with some reducers. Very happy with the performance. We've had it for a few weeks. We are using it as the handle for a drinking fountain. We took off the chain and it works great!

The valve reduced pressure a little too much for the application I was wanting to use it for ("Sunflower" shower head). I ended up just using a regular ball valve instead. The body of the valve was very much heavy duty with a real nice finish, but I received the product without the cotter pin that secures the stem to the handle and the chain broke after just a couple of uses. I think this valve would be a pretty good fit maybe for a low pressure or water-saver shower head, but the volume it produces just doesn't accommodate high volume applications. I would have probably given it a 2.5 or 2.75 rating if I was able.....'
