Not Recommended - exercise, cycling
I felt it very important to do this review, because I think this has been the best money I have ever spent!!! I had an elliptical for a few years,it was given to me so it was used. It broke earlier this year and I was crushed. The really good ones are very expensive so I thought about a bike. I spent about 3 hours online looking over many websites for the best deal. I have so found it!! This is a great bike. First of all, I went with the super saver shipping and it arrived 7 days earlier than expected, which was great. Secondly, it took my husband about an hour to put together and he said it was really very simple and commented on how well built it was. And lastly, riding it is a dream come true. It is very sturdy and smoothe, and extremely quiet! For the price I am truly amazed at the quality of this machine. I would tell anyone out there looking for a great piece of equipment to go for this one! Stamina 4545 Magnetic Fusion Recumbent Bike
I purchased the bike a few weeks ago and I love it! The bike was delivered on schedule and arrived in good condition. It took my husband and I about an hour to put it together and it works perfectly. It's quiet, comfortable, the seat position is easily adjusted and the monitor is easy to read with speed, distance, time, calories and pulse rate. I'd definitely recommend it.
This arrived in flawless condition. Kudos to UPS and free 2nd day air courtesy of Amazon Prime. Aseembly took about an hour thanks to very clear instructions. The display has big characters and is easy to read. The display defaults to a scan mode, which cycles through the time, speed, calories burned, and pulse rate. Unfortunately, pulse rate takes 5 seconds to show up, by which time the display has moved on to the next function. Pulse rate can be manually selected. EDIT: pulse rate works fine in scan mode; you need to keep both hands on the handlebar sensors. Another note: the computer retains settings from the previous workout session. Press the blue "Scan" button and hold to zero out the memory.
Resistance is changed by pushbuttons built into the handlebars, so you don't need to bend forward to change it like some other bikes.
I like the design of the seat adjustment. If you have more than one person using this bike you will like it too.
The price is significantly lower than similar units found in department and sporting goods stores. In my opinion, it is an unbeatable bargain.
My husband, who really isn't that handy, put this together in an hour. He said it was much easier than he thought. I've only had the opportunity to use it a few times as I've been busy....but I love it. It is soooooooooo quiet ....that was my biggest concern as I wake up before he does and our work out room is directly across from our bedroom. The only thing I would like are straps for the feet, but I might look into purchasing some. Otherwise, great deal!
We purchased the Stamina 4545 Magnetic Fusion Recumbent Bike in December, shortly before my husband had a knee replacement. We received it within, I think it was 5 days. It was easy for him to assemble....took about an hour. It has been wonderful for him as part of his therapy. It is made very strong and durable. He is 6'6" and weighs around 270lbs. and it fits him very well. Alot of exercise equipment seem to have about a 250 lb. weight limit. We would definitely recommend it. And the price was excellent !
Compared quite a few brands, and then different Stamina models. Decided on the Fusion 4545 because it has a higher weight limit and I thought it would be bigger (I'm not a short guy) and sturdier. It was delivered quickly and I assembled it in about an hour. Nothing damaged from shipping, no missing parts. Folks, don't worry about the quality of the design; it's very solid for the price. It's whisper quiet and if you find something on TV that interests you, you'll forget you're exercising. After a couple of months of steady use by my wife and I, everything still works and no squeaks. I'm going to have to give this product my highest recommendation.
We have two related problems with this bike. There are plastic liners in the seat assembly, one of which was broken when it arrived, the other shortly lost the little dot that held it in place. They were not mentioned in the instructions and keep the handle assembly from "sliding" down the rear assembly. This also makes adjustment impossible. Our other bike adjusts by way of the bottom bar which is easier for us. It arrived on time and in good condition except for the plastic liner. It took both of us about an hour to assemble, most of which time was trying to "slide" the handle assembly. Also, due to weather, the help line was closed until too late for us.
My doctor suggested my getting an excerise bike after my knee replacement. The bike came quickly. I didn't know the bike was unassembled and putting the bike together was painful. Adding to the discomfort, I am mechanically challenged. Thankfully, my 5 year old granddaughter was there to help put the bike together. The only problem I had was the connections to the display were broken and so that doesn't work. However, the bike is much better than the one in physical therapy and I rub it in at therapy. I try to use it for an hour each day and it has helped restore motion to my knee. Thanks -
Was a little leary about what I was receiving. After some research I chose this Stamina 4545 because of the price. I am not mechanical and it took 4 hours for me to put together. (directions were very clear)The final result was a perfectly wonderful exercise bike. Nice and quiet and does the job well. My wife uses it daily since her knee replacement surgery and says it is helping with her recovery.
I bought this bike to help with rehab. for a knee replacement. I feel safe on it and it feels secure. It was very easy to assemble, my husband and I assembled it in about 1 and 1/2 hours. I would recommend this to a friend. - Exercise - Exercise Bike - Recumbent Bike - Cycling'

Seat Cushions - back pain, cushion
I've tried so many back pillows and have been evaluated by our ergonomics dept at work. I've tried changing the height of my chair, the chair tilt; everything. I still end up with back pain and a heating pad on the back of my chair. I am tall, 5'8" so I think my legs are just too long to sit at a desk.
I ordered the fellow professional series back support only because no one else I knew at work had tried it yet and the price was right.
It gives me support in areas of my back that have hurt in the past, the upper, middle and lower areas of my back now have the extra support. The bonus of having the little pillows on the lower sides just puts this back support at the top of my recommendation list. I no longer have back or leg pain after a day at work. It doesn't shift all around the seat after you secure it, it doesn't get hot and the pillow has retained it's shape very well.
Now all the women at work are getting them too. The only thing I could think of that would add to this procduct would be to somehow add a heat option but I think that may make it cumbersome on the back of the chair.
5 stars for sure, this product does everything it says it will. Fellowes Professional Series Back Support, Black (8037601)
I am so glad I purchased this back rest. My coworkers ask about it and want to order one for themselves. Great back support and so comfortable. I would recommend this to everyone who needs good lumbar support.
I have one at the office and one in my car. It fits well on both the car seat and the desk chair. I am buying another for home. The spine adjustment that it provides has done wonders for my neck as well. It took about ten to twenty minutes to get used to, but within a couple weeks my back is better than it has been in years. The price beats a chiropractor, and the results are even better!
I read the reviews before buying, so I thought I would come back to say how happy I am with this product! It really provides the lower back support that I needed. I have the same office chair as in the picture and it works great! I would recommend this to anyone - great support for a great price!
I am a short person. It is difficult to sit correctly in a office chair to allow for me to sit up straight. This back support is great for my lower back as well as allows me to sit more comfortably in these chairs built for taller people.
I just strapped this on my office chair today and am already feeling a huge difference. Seriously helps my posture, and is already reducing the pain in my shoulder/scapula area. Definitely recommended. A little goofy looking but worth the money.
I am very impressed with the design of this back support device. Someone really took the time to design a product that actually works. The back support attaches security to my office chair using high-quality straps that hold it in place perfectly. The memory foam cushons give good support to my lower back and spine. The quality is so good that I doubt I will ever have any problems with this. The straps are designed very well; the lower 2 straps split off into two sections to go around the lower corners of the chair, while the top strap comes up and over the top where they all attach to each other using high-quality quick-release connectors.
I highly recommend this to anyone who has back problems, as I do.
i need support in my lumbar, but i also need some support for my upper back, between shoulders. because of the lumbar support, i have to lean my upper back backwards, which causes me to sit improperly, thus creating pain.
product was what it advertised basically, but the upper back support is only 2 stars.
I love this back support, it fits great on my office chair that already has a curved back rest. Its shape gives me the support I need in my lower back (as it fits into the curve of my back instead of bowing away like other supports) The only negative thing I can see is that it does flatten out over time because the padding is almost like Memory foam that gives when you lean against it. You will have to replace it eventually, it lasted me about a year. - Lumbar Support - Back Pain - Cushion - Back Support'

Inkjet Cartridges - inkjet printer ink, canon printer
The regular 211 contains 9ml of ink. The 211XL contains 13ml of ink. That's 44% more ink for very little extra money. It's also less times you'll find yourself running low on ink and have to reorder and swap out cartridges. Canon CL-211 XL Cartridge (Color)
I have a Canon MP240 that this went into. The XL carts are more than 2x the ink for a 40% increase in cost. They are the best value of all my color printers refills. This cartridge lasted over 2x the previous normal size one.
We use this ink cartridge for our printer and it seems to last a looooong time.... Betweeen me printing stuff for work (I am a toddler teacher) and my husband printing forms to become a citizen, we print a lot! This is one of the best cartridges we have ever used...
This cartridge printed fewer color pages than the starter cartridge that came with the printer. I have since replaced the cartridge from Amazon with a cartridge purchased at a large retail chain and I have received much more use from it. I believe the catridge that I received from Amazon was either old or defective. I would gusstimate that it printed 5 or fewer full color pages worth of material.
My review is the same as the black cartridge. It's way too expensive for what it is, but that seems to be the 21st century trade off for a good but inexpensive printer. I like my Canon MX340... great printer and inexpensive. BUT if I did high volume printing I'd definately go with a much more expensive printer that advertised low cartridge prices. I only paid 80 dollars for the printer, which is excellent, but about every 3 months I pay another 60 dollars to replace the ink. And I don't do THAT much printing.
Received the ink cartridge and installed as described with not problems, worked right out of the package. I was concerned if this was cost effective over going to the local store and I will continue to use Amazon for my printer needs as long as it preforms as it did this time.
Great to have extra large ink cartridge because regular sized ones run out too quickly. Question: Why make 2 different sized cartridges in the 1st place ? Why not just make 1 cartridge that lasts longer and charge a reasonable price for it ? Looks like exploitation to me. Better just to get the XL cartridges all the time and pay the cost.
Being a prime member allows fast shipping. I had a project to finish and ran out of ink. Ordering from Amazon.com allowed the ink cartridge to arrive in two days. The cartridge is working perfectly and the price was cheaper than Wal-mart. I will always get my cartridges from Amazon.com
I am a semi professional photographer, and I constantly go through Ink. I had never ordered a printer cartridge online before, and now I will never purchase one in the stores. The delivery was timely and the product is sharp and reliable. - Inkjet Cartridges - Canon Ink - Canon Printer - Inkjet Printer Ink'

Garmin Nuvi 265wt - large screen, 255w
I actually could not decide between the Garmin Nuvi 255w or the 750 model, so I decided to buy them both for comparison. I mounted them both to my car windshield and gave them various addresses to find together. I found that both models took the same routes and announced upcoming turns and street names at practically the same time. One thing I noticed about the 255w was that it was updating my position on the road more often, I'd say about 3 times as often as the 750. This made for smoother graphics on the 255w of the vehicle moving along displayed roads, where the 750's display was more of a "jerky" movement. I also found that the display on the 255w was a bit brighter, clearer, and more vivid than on the 750 in both daylight and at night. Another feature I like on the 255w is the graphic turn indicator in the upper left corner, which the 750 lacks. This is a small arrow which shows upcoming turns and the distance to that turn. It also show things like a fork in the road, (ie: a Y intersection), and which fork you will be taking. The 750 just displays text on the top line for upcoming turns without the arrow. It's just a little extra feature on the 255w which I happened to really like. The 255 also automatically adjusts the font size of displayed text so that even lengthy text will fit.
Another feature on the 255w is a display of the posted speed limit on the road which you are currently on right above your current displayed speed. I found myself not even looking at my car speedometer as I could easily see my current speed and the speed limit of my route at a glance. The 750 doesn't have this feature. I also like how they moved the zoom in (+) and zoom out (-) buttons on the 255w to the same side of the screen which makes it a bit easier. On the 750 the zoom buttons are on opposite sides of the screen.
Now there are some features on the 750 that the 255w does not have. The 750 can broadcast it's sound over your FM radio with the supplied cigarette lighter cable, and it has a headphone jack, which I found to be nice features. The 750 also has an MP3 player and an Audio-book player, which the 255w does not. Another really nice feature of the 750 is the car locater. This is a great feature if you are parking in a really big lot, such as at an amusement park or a fair. The 750 marks your location when you remove it from the car, then you take it with you and it remembers where you parked and takes you right back to your car. The 255w doesn't have the car locater.
I also thought the the voice prompts of the 750 where more pleasant sounding than the 255w's. The 750 sounds more like a real female voice, where the 255w sounds more robotic.
Another thing to consider was that I paid $50 less for the 750 and it came with the FM transmitter cable and a USB cord to connect it to your computer for updates and downloads.
My final decision was to keep the 255w and return the 750 because I really liked the graphic turn indicator and the posted speed limit and current speed indicators. I didn't find a need for the 750's MP3 player and Audio book player, but that is up to personal preference. Since the USB cable was not included with the 255w, I purchased it on this site for $10. I also intend to purchase the MSN direct cable when it is available in August 2008. Garmin nĂ¼vi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Accessory Bundle
If you spend much time driving in unfamiliar territory, especially if you rent cars in big cities, a good portable GPS makes an amazing difference. And the Garmin 255W is the best one I could find in the $250 - $350 range.
First this thing just plain works. I haven't had any issues with mine. It was easy to set up and figure out right out of the box, and it's easy to use. It never has had trouble getting sufficient signal unlike earlier and cheaper models.
I chose the 255W for several reasons: It uses some of the newest and best maps available. It has one of the more usable touch screens for entering destinations. It's fast to acquire satellites. And Garmin almost always comes out on top in reviews--especially in routing.
Ultimately, you buy a car GPS to get you from Point A to Point B as easily and efficiently as possible. And that's what the 255W does best. If you've ever had a "Brand X" GPS take you on some strange route that adds 20 minutes to your trip, has you turn the wrong way down a one way road, tell you to turn AFTER you've passed the street, frequently loses the satellite signal, or has old maps missing streets, you know how important this stuff is.
The 255W has a really clear display that's easy to see in any light. It's small enough to use on foot. The windshield mount works great and it's easy to toss in the glovebox when you park. It even tells you the speed limit on most roads. The "points of interest" feature works very well to find places to eat by type of cuisine, gas stations, etc.
The difference between the 255W and 205W is the 255 speaks street names and includes Alaska and Canada. The 205 and 205W will tell you to "turn right in 500 feet" which isn't as helpful or obvious as "turn right on Ivy Street in 500 feet". The "W" models are widescreen which makes entering destinations easier due to having a bigger "keyboard" and also lets you see more map area while driving.
All in all this isn't the cheapest GPS in its class but it's one of the best. My only gripe is you need an expensive add-on to get live traffic data--something that's included with the Magellan Roadmate 1430 which is close to the same price. But the Garmin 255W is a better GPS in every other way. - Large Screen - 255w - Garmin Nuvi - Gps'

Great For Kids - digital camera for kids, great for kids
I bought this camera for my 5 year old because I was scared to death that he was going to destroy my digital camera that he was so fascinated with. This was the perfect solution to my problem. He had this camera for 30 min before he dropped it on some tile, picked it up and continued to take pictures. My camera would have been in multiple pieces if he would have done that. We now have great pictures of the dog, light switches, rocks, plants and of course, the TV. I highly recommend this item. It keeps my son very entertained and it is great to see the world through a child's eyes! Vtech Kidizoom Plus Digital Camera
we have 4 children and have had many "kids" cameras and have thrown many out that did not stand up to the abuse. This camera is the best!!! AND its for all ages. We first got a blue one for our 7 year old who LOVES it! Takes great pics and video and you can watch it all on your TV. Then we got the pink one for our 5 year old because she always wanted his. This Christmas we are now buying a new one for the 2 1/2 yr old who takes their cameras ALL the time and actually takes good pics with this camera. It is so easy and very durable and cute. Definetly a tried lasting kid camera!
I recently purchased this for my soon to be 5 year old. When it arrived, I took it out of the package and tested it out to see how it performed, and make sure it worked. I had fun with this toy! The pictures are not superior and are similar to those taken by a camera phone. They are not all that crappy, and this version (Kidizoom Plus) upgrades to 2.0 megapixels and has 5 instead of 3 games! I took the picture at night with only a light on and I could see the picture just fine. Yes it was a little dark compared to an adult camera, but visible and should be more so during the day. It must be remembered that this is a toy, and a quality one...it works just fine, and as a real camera. It is NOT a 10-12 megapixel adult camera, so don't expect it to perform like one. The photo editing stamps are great, they are cute and fun. The games and sound are clear and in color. Yes you must stand still to take a clear picture...the camera is only moving with you. Teach your child to stand still, if they can't then they're not quite ready for the camera yet... simple as that. The toy camera is durable and well-made...I highly recommend it! The only way you will be disappointed is if you compare it to a high-end functioning adult camera; and compared to other children's cameras, this one takes the cake! Unless you have introduced your child to a real adult camera with high megapixel quality, they will not be disappointed either! Knowing my son, I have no doubt this will be his favorite Christmas gift!
Okay, because I'm easily irritated by parents that just don't understand simple parent things I am going to explain why this is a great CHILD'S camera. --But first I need you as a parent to understand some basic logic: Adult "toys" are not meant for children. Digital cameras are ADULT TOYS. This camera is a child's version of an adult toy. Comparing your camera to theirs is like comparing your car to their Power Wheels car. It just doesn't make any sense. With that said, please understand that this is a camera meant for children, it's primary purpose is to be durable.
~~~~ Pros ~~~~
1) This camera has been both dropped and thrown and still works. I've dropped adult cameras that have cost 3 times as much and they have never worked again. - This is my second purchase of this type of camera from VTECH. I bought the original one (an older version of this camera) for my classroom (I've been in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd with that camera) - one summer when I brought it home my son (who was barely 4 at the time) wanted to use it and instead of bringing it back and forth every day I got him one for his 5th birthday. Both cameras still work wonderfully (even after being used by over 100 children ages 4-9.)
2) Children love to use this camera (but they take pictures of EVERYTHING)
3) The camera automatically shuts off after a period of time - so IF the batteries keep dying on the camera it's very possible that the child actually uses it enough to run the batteries down. - The new one I bought has been used by 2 boys for over a month. They have taken 109 pictures, played the games, and played with the options on the camera. I have not had to change the batteries yet (Buying camera quality batteries is worth the investment).
4) Children can use the two eye viewer or the digital screen to aim.
5) When my son wants to use my camera I can remind him that he has his own.
6) You can finally get pictures of those people that won't let you take pictures of them - my grandmother thinks it's a toy so she will pose for the camera (she is the person in the family that will never let you take a picture of her so she covers her face and turns her head when she sees one - other people can't say no I don't want you to take my picture to a child. :-) It's great!
~~~~ Pros that can be cons and vise versa ~~~~
1) The battery compartments are secured with screws - This means you have to unscrew it to change the batteries (duh) - but it also means that your child can't get to the batteries, and it means that the flimsy plastic tabs that often break off on battery compartments aren't needed!
2) It's not rechargeable - then again I don't have to worry about charging the batteries, my kids don't have to wait for the batteries to charge, and this camera doesn't have *special* cord/battery that goes with this camera and is the *only* cord/battery that will make the toy usable again. -- BESIDES, lets look again at the power wheels toy with their special battery that needs to be charged. When your child wants to ride the power wheels, it's almost never charged, and after using it only a few times the batteries die and you might as well buy a whole new one because replacing the battery is so expensive. -- THANK GOD we don't have those problems with this camera.
3) The QUALITY of the PICTURES are FANTASTIC (for examples see: [...]) - when the child holds still long enough for the camera to do it's job. I would say about 60% of the pictures taken (by a 5 year old) are fuzzy because the child taking the picture won't slow down long enough for the camera to do it's job. About 5% are fuzzy for an adult. - I think someone said it needs a stabilizer, which I agree with. --However the content of a 5-year-old's pictures is approximately as follows:
50% are of nothing (the tv, the mop, the couch, the grass, the hose, the room)
30% are pictures of people (usually another persons shirt or part of their head & the child's own hand, lap, leg, etc)
15% are pictures are actually whole people - but the pictures are taken from the child's height pointed "up" to the adult (yes duh, but this is not the most appealing view of your self, trust me)
5% are actually good pictures that don't fit into the other categories.
-- so fuzzy pictures don't really matter that much. AND the child that can't slow down long enough to take a good picture, probably won't slow down long enough to care about if it's fuzzy or not.
4) There are a lot of options (It can zoom(a little), has picture editing tools, has games, has a slide show option, can take Video with audio, and it also has "settings") Giving the child all of these buttons to play with is sort of pointless, but they all enjoy adjusting the options. -- the children also need to be taught that the tiny symbol of the camera needs to be lined up with the red thing when they want to take pictures again (which isn't too hard to teach them.)
5) The on/off button needs to be held down for a while before it turns on. My son thinks it's broken because it doesn't immediately turn on. Then again it doesn't get accidentally turned on (like in a book bag or toy box)
6) The menu button (to switch between camera, games, options, etc.) is in a place that would be easily bumped by little noses. (But then again it's between the two eye viewers so it's protected from being easily damaged too..)
~~~~ Cons ~~~~
1) The QUALITY of the SCREEN on the camera isn't that great, but I also purchased a $50 "adult" camera (for a teenager) that had the same screen quality. - Does that really matter?
OVERALL, this camera is fantastic for any child that would proudly carry it around. If your child would feel embarrassed by carrying around a rather large toy-like camera, then I wouldn't buy them this camera. If he/she wouldn't feel embarrassed by the case, then all of the mediocre "cons" mentioned above and by others, are really just YOU being picky and getting in the way of your child's fun. The child will be thrilled to have a REAL camera that takes REAL pictures - and it takes abuse well. - Kids Camera - Digital Camera For Kids - Digital Camera - Great For Kids'
Smoke Alarms - smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detector
I purchased four of these at once to replace my four aging smoke alarms. I like these units because they are inexpensive, compact, easy to install, they have two methods of detecting fire or smoke, and they run on inexpensive, easy-to-replace AA batteries. (I have never liked 9-volt batteries.) If you need a good, well-rated unit in a stand-alone smoke & fire alarm, this is the one for you. If you need a networked unit, I believe First Alert produces such a unit, but that feature will cost you more. The SA320CN is highly recommended. Nintendo Ds Lite - racing, video games
It seems just like yesterday when the original Mario Kart made its debut on the SNES in 1992. The game was a hit back then, and it isn't difficult to understand why. A racing game that emphasizes on sabotaging your opponents with weapons like banana skins, flying shells and lightning bolts was almost unheard of then, and to do so with your favorite Nintendo characters was, quite simply, pure bliss. Not surprisingly, the game captured the hearts of many gamers then.
Fast forward to the year 2005. Fans of the series have seen a few sequels through the years, but the DS version of Mario Kart was greeted with much more anticipation than its predecessors. The main reason, obviously, is the game's inclusion of integrated online play. For the first time in Mario Kart's history, gamers can now take on players from all over the world as long as they're using a wireless router that is supported by Nintendo. The game also allows up to eight players to multiplay in close proximity with only one copy of the cartridge, which essentially means that a gamer who decides not to buy the game can still perform a download play and race against a friend who owns a cartridge.
Of course, to enjoy the other features in Mario Kart DS, you'll still have to purchase the game, especially when you're interested in taking on the single-player campaign. As with previous instalments, Mario Kart DS has a grand prix mode, which comprises of four races each that are span across eight different competitions. This means a total of 32 tracks for your racing pleasure. 16 of these tracks are brand new, but the rest consists of classic ones from previous renditions of Mario Kart. These include the Moo Moo Farm from N64, Peach Circuit from the GBA and even the original Mario Circuit from the SNES. These will no doubt bring much joy for Mario Kart fans.
Yet, even in the presence of the classic tracks, the newer tracks do not pale in comparison. The innovative minds at Nintendo have once again developed a series of circuits that are visually stunning, mildly challenging and always entertaining. You'll get to race through a pinball machine, a clock and even an airship fortress! The combination of both old and new tracks is indeed a masterstroke that allows you to engage new challenges, as well as indulge in some nostalgia.
Mario Kart DS also has a mission mode that requires you to perform a series of tasks within a certain time limit. These include collecting a designated number of coins, passing through a series of numbered gates in sequence, and even hitting specified enemies with specified weapons. The missions are divided into "worlds", and each world various stages. Completing all stages in a world will unlock a "boss fight", which could involve winning in a race against the boss, or even to knock him out from a platform. Defeating a boss unlocks the next world, up to a maximum of six worlds and a total of 54 missions. Obviously, the missions get tougher as the game progresses, but they aren't exactly impossible to complete. Gamers who enjoy more than merely racing should find the mission mode in Mario Kart DS a fun and captivating feature.
The other modes in the single player campaign include a VS challenge and a battle mode. The VS challenge basically pits you against seven CPU-controlled racers in a never-ending series of races. This is the perfect training ground for learning the techniques of the game. The battle mode consists of a balloon battle and a shine runners game. The balloon battle requires you to burst the balloons of your opponents, while the shine runners game requires you grab as many shines as possible. These two mini-games are quite forgettable when played alone, so it's recommended that you engage them with a friend or two. Bursting balloons has never been so much fun.
A Mario Kart game is never complete without an array of usable weapons against your fellow racers. In Mario Kart DS, the arsenal gets even better with the inclusion of some new items. One of these new weapons is the Bob-omb, which causes an explosion. If used accurately, the Bob-omb's impact on an opponent is tremendous, as it drastically slows down his or her progress. The Bullet Bill is another new item that is extremely cool. Using it will turn you into a flying bullet. You'll find yourself bursting forward with much speed, knocking over anyone who dares stand in your way, and most importantly, covering a lot of ground. The Blooper, one of Mario's nastiest enemies, is the third new addition. It'll squirt ink onto your opponent's windscreen, causing a temporary loss of vision. The range of old and new items more than complement each other, and you'll no doubt find great usage with them as you progress.
The controls of Mario Kart DS are extremely simple, making it a game that anyone could pick up and play without much hassle. Of course, learning more techniques are useful when you intend to go online for some real challenge, and the game does give you a repertoire of skills to master. One of them is turbo drifting, which requires you to drift, and then quickly press the left and right button on your D-pad to cause your tires to catch fire. Releasing the drift immediately after that will result in a temporary burst of speed. This technique is extremely useful in chasing a seemingly loss cause.
The real meat of the game, obviously, is the online feature. Once you get connected, you'll be able to search for players who're also online at the same time. It may take a while for you to get a full quota of four players, but the game works with one or two opponents as well. You'll have to race through a standard Grand Prix in an online game. You'll also get to vote on which track you want to race, so that you can at least gain an upper hand by (hopefully) getting a track that you're familiar with. It's also advisable for you to practise on the various tracks before proceeding, since you won't want to finish last all the time!
As mentioned earlier, you can also play with fellow friends with the use of only one cartridge, but the player who doesn't have a cartridge will, by default, be using Shy Guy as a character. The player only needs to turn on his DS when another player hosts the game, and he should be able to "download" the game into his DS for a quick race. As with online play, it takes a while for the connection to be established, but my experience with multiplaying has found no lag at all during the gameplay, which is definitely great. Beware, however, when you send a bolt of lightning towards your friend - regular attempts at this could possibly lead to a loss of friendship at the end of the races!
If you're a fan of Nintendo-style graphics, Mario Kart DS will not disappoint you. The game retains the usual awesome graphics from the past, and provides a great sense of details even for a supposedly "cartoony" presentation. The DS' dual screen also comes in handy here, as you can watch the action on the top screen, while still referring to the touch screen for a real-time map. The map is especially useful for dodging attacks from behind. The audios are also highly enjoyable, combining great music and sound effects seamlessly. Somehow, the sound of "vroom vroom" seems to blend perfectly to the lively, catchy tunes in the background. If only prime time radio is that good.
In summary, Mario Kart DS is everything you can expect from a Mario Kart game, and perhaps just a little more. The inclusion of online play makes the experience a little better, but even if you've no access to it, the single player campaign should still be good enough to keep you going back for more. Super Mario Galaxy 2 - nintendo, super mario galaxy 2
My daughter was 5-years old when we first played the original Super Mario Galaxy. She would constantly corner me every day so that we could play it over and over, and after we beat it, over and over again. In fact, I have beaten the original game a total of 10 times with my daughter as my trusty side-kick at the player 2 spot, grabbing stars, freezing bad guys, or shooting the occasional bad guy or gold dot to get me a much needed coin.
So imagine our delight when we heard on Amazon.com last June that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was available for pre-order...without a confirmed date, of course, but ready for pre-order nonetheless.
Does Super Mario Galaxy 2 hold up? Does it still manage to capture the heart of a 7-year old girl and her father? The answer is a resounding YES.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 completely operates in its own right by being a stand-alone story. The only nod to the previous Galaxy comes in the form of Rosalina who will appear if you have significant difficulty with a level so that she can actually show you how to pass a level (at the cost of getting a bronze, NOT gold star). Back to the story (or the little of it that there is, a la most Mario games), Princess Peach has been kidnapped by a GIGANTIC Bowser (surprise!). Naturally, Mario is going to rescue her with the help of star power from master luma (star-like creatures with the capability to transform).
Who is there to help Mario this time? Well, this time Luigi is a playable character later on, as opposed to the original Galaxy which forced you to take the torturous path of collecting all 120 stars before unlocking him. Yoshi is on board as well, your trusty steed who can eat red-hot peppers to move quickly and cross water no less, or become a blimp full of hot air, or glow to reveal hidden paths.
The biggest change for us as a father-daughter team is that Player 2 has more to do now. Player 2 is actually an orange luma who follows Mario around. Now, Player 2 (in addition to freezing enemies and grabbing stars) can actually spin as well to knock enemies to the ground or grab coins from remote places by flying over to them quickly and then bringing them back to Mario. Also, making Player 2 an actual, tangible entity in the game (as opposed to a mysterious P2 star that has no discernible presence) makes it even more fun for my daughter who gets caught up in the action because the game itself is usually too hard for her as Player 1. She will actually say things like, "Daddy, you get the one on the right, I'll get the one on the left." It's extremely hard to pry her away from it when it's time for a story and bed.
Has the gameplay changed much? Well, no, the same mechanics are there. It's interesting that the game starts off as a 2D sidescrolling event that leads into somewhat a 3D perspective until it's a full-blown 3D adventure. It's a subtle, baby-step transition and, as an IGN reviewer put it, it pays off in getting those unfamiliar with the original to get into the action.
Despite having the same mechanics of jumping and spinning, Mario has some new powerups. Cloud Mario can create little tufts of clouds to hop up. Rock Mario has our hero turning into a solidified boulder to roll around (and even "bowl" to hilarious effect). Drill Mario allows our hero to drill through to inaccessible areas. And, of course, there's Yoshi who is able to eat his enemies and use a couple of funny power-ups of his own as previously mentioned. Bee Mario, Fire Mario, Spring Mario, etc., make their return.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is smooth, polished and shows the time-dedicated love and attention that was bestowed upon it during its 3-year absence. It takes the best parts of the original and makes them better while taking away what didn't work the first time. They have wisely included more for player 2 to do while acknowledging that Mario is still, front and center, the star of the show. The music is even more fully orchestrated than before. The attention to detail is phenomenal and showcases Nintendo's desire to never compromise by releasing a product too quickly without undergoing the rigorous quality control that this game clearly had.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a delight for children and even a delight for me as a 37-year old father. This is my "daughter and me" time, when we share a fun family night (Mommy likes to watch ;D), night-after-night and it is my modern-day Monopoly. Cheers to Nintendo for taking a winning formula, keeping it more than alive, and breathing fresh ideas into this franchise.
So what are you waiting for? Purchase the game...this is one of the flagship titles, and deservedly so. Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario Galaxy was an astounding achievement in video game design back in 2007, and to this day it remains an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable 3-D platformer. In fact, Galaxy was so good that when I heard that a direct sequel would be coming a mere 2 ½ years later, I had my doubts as to how the game would be a worthy successor without simply rehashing everything that made the first game so great. But while Galaxy 2 is great for almost all the same reasons as the first game was, it still stands out from its predecessor in many ways and stakes its claim as one of the greatest video games ever made.
Galaxy 2's plot is no more or less recycled and predictable as the story from the first game. It's not as though anyone can watch the opening cutscene and think, "Why is that giant turtle thing trying to kidnap the princess?!?" There are no surprises here, except perhaps the fact that this time around, Bowser is absolutely huge. But the beauty of it all is that it shows that Nintendo knows that they don't need an amazing story to make an amazing game. While it might have been nice to see something different, it's hard to ignore the fact that even if Galaxy 2 had a marvelous plot, the rest of the game's strengths would still overwhelmingly overshadow it.
Even in the midst of watching the same exact story kick off again, though, Galaxy 2 immediately states its intentions by starting off with a sidescrolling stage. Yes, Galaxy 2 is indeed a 3-D Mario game, but perhaps its greatest strength is in how it blends together the linearity and very format of many 2-D Mario titles with the open worlds of 3-D Mario games. Most of the galaxies are in full 3-D, but there is a surprising number of sidescrolling stages as well. These 2-D sections aren't just great because they resemble 2-D Mario, but what makes them stand out is how well all of Galaxy's elements translate to a 2-D format. It all works so well that it makes the 2-D areas simply fantastic.
Both the 2-D and 3-D levels alike feature phenomenal level design. The Galaxy team has produced over 50 galaxies for this game, almost all of which manage to bring something new to the table as far as design goes. There are a few new power-ups, including Rock Mario, which allows Mario to roll around at high speeds, and Cloud Mario, which gives Mario the ability to generate cloud platforms underneath himself in the air. These, coupled with most of the power-ups from the first game, offer plenty of creative design features that manage to twist the proven Galaxy formula of planet hopping and gravity-based puzzles in fresh, exciting ways.
But perhaps the most significant addition to Galaxy 2 is Yoshi. In past Mario games, Yoshi's playable appearances have always been in 2-D games, and his playtime is usually disappointingly brief. Galaxy 2, though, puts the creative opportunities that Yoshi presents to use in more ways than ever before. Yoshi can swing on floating flowers and eat enemies, and that's all good fun, but the best thing about Yoshi is that he can also get power-ups from special fruits. A red pepper will make him run at exhilarating speed, a shiny yellow fruit will make him glow and reveal invisible floors and platforms, and a yellow berry will make him float like a balloon. None of this may sound all that original but these power-ups aren't great merely because of the concept they present, but how they are put to use and how the level design forces players to get creative with how to utilize these abilities, and that is what makes Galaxy 2's level design shine.
As I mentioned earlier, Galaxy 2 hosts over 50 galaxies, which is loads more than its predecessor. There is a bit of a trade-off though, in that the galaxies have a maximum of three stars each. Most galaxies offer one main mission and two prankster comet challenges, which are unlocked by finding the comet medal in the galaxy. Those who favor the sprawling open worlds of previous 3-D Mario titles might not view this trade-off as a good thing as it makes the levels more linear, but in my opinion it is a positive change as it opened up a lot more opportunities for the game developers to make more levels and let their ingenuity shine. And this change also reflects the idea that Galaxy 2 is more in the format of a 2-D Mario game than the traditional style of the 3-D titles, and the linearity of the levels reflects the style of the 2-D games. It all works together to make a 3-D Mario title as much like a 2-D Mario game without making it entirely in 2-D; I think it's an clever and profitable touch to an excellent game.
Galaxy 2 has made significant improvements in longevity as well. In the first game, collecting all 120 stars allowed completionists to play through the game a second time as Luigi. Galaxy 2 throws this out the window, though, by making Luigi playable at random points in the game and permanently unlocked after Bowser is defeated for the last time. And once the 120th power star is collected, 120 green stars appear dispersed throughout the game's galaxies, doubling the number of stars in each galaxy and thereby doubling the number of stars in the game. These are not mission-based, though; finding the green stars is basically a massive scavenger hunt, as they are hidden within each level. The green star quest substantially extends the game's length and forces players to utilize every last inch of Mario or Luigi's jumping heights, and the best part is that players are often required to get creative with the level design and figure out how to outsmart it. It's quite challenging at times, but still very entertaining.
From a technical standpoint Galaxy 2 is still the Wii's finest. The animation is sharp and vibrant, transforming the TV screen into a constant visual treat. The frame rate is smooth as can be, and everything is simply a pleasure to look at. The graphics are essentially the same as in the first game, but there really wasn't much, if anything, that needed improvement to begin with. The game also shines with its sound, with great sound effects that are true to the theme and franchise, and even better yet, the soundtrack is simply phenomenal. It does an even better job than the first Galaxy score in bringing classic Mario tunes to life in new ways while also adding in plenty of new themes. It all sounds simply fantastic, mixing the old with the new just as the rest of the game so masterfully does.
So what's wrong with Galaxy 2? Is there a single flaw? I could definitely say that it's slightly disappointing that all three Bowser battles are essentially the same thing. I could also say that the final galaxy, the Grandmaster Galaxy, was too hard to be much fun and didn't feature any new creative twists. And yes, the story is the same old Bowser kidnaps Peach narrative we've watched over and over again. But to count those things against the game as major flaws would be extremely nitpicky. Yes, these ever so slight shortcomings are there, but they are so insignificant compared to the rest of the game's quality that it's hard to even consider them as detracting from the overall experience.
So no, Galaxy 2 isn't perfect. But since when has any game achieved perfection? God alone is perfect; nothing humans make can ever be truly perfect. But it's for games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 that "perfect" scores exist: games that are so excellent and so well crafted that they deserve top honors among their peers. And so that is why this game receives a 10 out of 10 from me. Not because it's perfect, but because it's as good as games get. So is Galaxy 2 perfect? No. Is it one of the greatest games ever to hit consoles? Why yes, I'm glad you asked. Now I highly recommend that you go pick up a copy and enjoy it for the excellent piece of entertainment it is.
Wine Fridge - beverage center, wine fridge
This is a beautiful bev fridge that looks sleek and modern in our new wetbar. The blue light definitely has the "wow" factor and it does not warm the fridge like a traditional bulb can. The temperature is holding true at 39 degrees (which is the lowest setting since it is really the wine fridge with different shelves). It does exactly as promised and looks amazing doing it. Danby Beverage Center (Black) (23.88"H x 23.75"W x 34.38"D)
This fridge looks great, and it is the right size for under the counter in our kitchen, we bought it to keep all the drinks out of the big fridge.... but man! It drives us crazy constantly turning on and off, literally 10 times a minute. We have tried turning the temp up and keeping it full, but to no avail. It is really noticeable and bothersome in the quiet moments of the morning and evening...just when you want to relax and enjoy your kitchen. It's almost like it's breathing and straining. We are bummed about it.
Three Evaporators replaced in 2.5 years. Total Junk. Four months prior to the manufacturer warranty expired and it failed. Evaporator replaced. Six months later under a service contract, it failed again. One week after receiving it back, failed again. I'm convinced that the service companies are milking the service contract for low hanging fruit on this product, but aren't actually finding the real leak. Danby all but said, sorry about your luck and were no help. I don't recommend this product or any purchase of a Danby product as a result. This thing has been a total lemon. It's currently unplugged and awaiting yet another repair under the service contract. I plan to replace it with another name brand product.
Bought this beverage cooler to put into a home theatre room we built in basement. I love the blue light, it gives off a nice color and a little light without overpowering, this is great when all the lights are out and we are watching a movie. The glass shelves are great! I know there are other options out there that are cheaper...some MUCH cheaper, but the adjustable glass shelves are worth it. Now I do not have to worry about things tipping. Another part of other reviews with wire shelves seemed to be that they would start to bend if you put too much on them.
I've had this beverage center for about 2 months now, and it looks great, but my major issue with this unit is the fan runs for about 20 seconds, stops for 10 seconds, and then on again, and it will continue to cycle like that, no matter how cold it is set at. It is incredibly annoying. I'm not sure if it's just my particular unit, I will be calling into Danby to see what they say about this.
This fridge is exactly what I wanted in a beverage center for our wet bar. It cools to 39 degrees, which most of these type of fridges will not get this cold. It is quiet running and the blue light is definitely cool. Also has a lock which is nice.
Came on time, and in great condition, as expected. Very easy to unpack, insert in existing under counter location, and to level. Holds temp at 40. Attractive. Shelf levels are all pre-set, so you don't have complete flexibility.
In the 3 1/2 years I owned this cooler it failed two times. Once, in the first year and a half it needed a compressor replaced and this was done under warranty. At the 3 1/2 year mark, it did it again and this time I got a pro rata payment which ended up being 1/3 of the cost of a new beverage center. Two total failures in this short of time is not impressive and I am left with a small amount of money in which to buy a new unit. Customer Service is not helpful ignoring my request to reconsider their "settlement" based on their warranty. I don't recommend buying this beverage center for the reasons stated as well as the fact that it never cooled very well and runs a circulating motor every 10 seconds. Not a good choice!
So far I am loving the new beverage center although the room is not quite complete and have not used the frig for anything yet, it is plugged in and looks great. The lock was not quite as great of quality as the rest of the frig, only 3 stars on that. - Danby - Wine Fridge - Mini Fridge - Beverage Center'
