Bike Headlight - bike headlight, bicycle light

I've had mine for almost two years of heavy use. The light is very bright, providing a great deal of visibility and some illumination of the road in front, which is enough for the city, and batteries last a very long time. Most pleasingly, the mounting system is very durable and it seems likely that it will withstand several years of regular use. The unit appears to be impervious to rain. As with all of the gear I've purchased from Planet Bike, a superior level of design is evident. A good, basic LED headlight. Planet Bike Beamer 3 LED Bicycle Light with Quick Cam Bracket Mount

Very good product .......bought it after reading the reviews on here . I was still a bit skeptical about the actual quality of light which would come out of this bicycle light ,but I was sure not dissapointed . The beam which comes out , is very bright and very focussed . It forms a small circle / elliptical shape on the light beam in front and very clear + bright .

Has 2 modes - flashing and constant-on

The light can be seen ffrom a far distance away . The color of the light is white instead of yellow , so was easier to spot when far away . Like I said , its very bright and with the flashing mode , would definatly warn the drivers of your presence . A very good buy , you would not be dissapointed , go for it .

Have not used the for the quick cam mount , just using it as a bike light on my handle bars .....

Some reviews have mentioned problems with the mount being too loose. That's not the case - the mount strap is adjustable and at its loosest setting out of the box. It retracts inward to tighten up, and there is a tab there to loosen it back up. I had no problems having a good, tight fit on my bike after adjusting the strap.

The light is very bright and energy-efficient. In comparison, my previous equally-bright halogen headlight required two C batteries and lasted for a tiny fraction of the time.

Overall excellent design.

This product's light is actually quite good; it's a "spot" light, but the projected light is a perfect circle, VERY large, and has a decent amount of falloff for seeing surrounding areas. The projected spot itself is paper-white (a sign of high-quality LEDs), and is decent. The light requires two AA batteries. One negative to the light itself is that pushing the on button once results in blink mode rather than steady mode. Not a very good default!

However, the mounting bracket is a complete travesty. Instructions and box claim it will mount "on any bar", which is completely false -- maximum bar size permitted is 30mm, which Planet Bike claims is "oversized".

Anyone who owns a Giant Yukon 2005 or later will not be able to use this mounting bracket, because the bar on the Yukon is not a consistent size, thus you must mount things at the base of the bar (near the headstem/middle), which is about 37mm. Otherwise, the light will slide up and down the bar quite easily. Additionally, the majority of the mounting bracket band consists of plastic, with an "adjustable rubber grip", which provides very little grip. Thumbs down.

Planet Bike should redesign the mounting bracket for this light, but keep the light itself. Two stars for the light, but minus 3 due to the atrocious mounting bracket.

This is a great little safety light, but understand that it is a safety light. That is to say it is a "see this and don't hit me" light vs. "let me see what I'm about to hit". Its not designed to illuminate the road in front if you, your need something with a lot more wattage and $ for that task. This little guy is designed to alert others to your existence so they don't turn you into a hood ornament.

I considered this unit vs. some of the smaller safety lights. I settle on this one for a couple of reasons

1 - It takes 2x AA batteries vs. 2x "N" cells which can be a pain to find.

2 - It seems way more durable. Good solid plastic (yea, its still plastic).

3 - Changing the batteries is very easy and doesn't require any tools or frustration. The front of the unit rotates, unlocks comes off.

4 - I'm going to guess its better weather sealed than the other units.

5 - Its brighter but not too bright, I ride with a group at night and I didn't want the flashing thing to give off too much like as this can be distracting in some scenarios.

On the down side it is bigger, bulkier and heavier than some of the smaller units, but that's the price you pay for AA.

The light it puts out seems adequate for the job. Its equal to a medium grade LED headlamp. The button is a bit hard to push but won't be accidentally activated. The first push makes it flash, the second push is steady and the next push turns it off.

The mount is nice in that it doesn't require a screw driver to mount, though it is a bit more complicated. I was a bit concerned that it wouldn't fit on my oversized handlebars but it had enough play.

The mount is adjustable in two ways. First there is a click slide (kind of like a zip tie) that lets you make adjustments by sliding a plastic belt into a click buckle (you can always lift it up and let it out). Then there is the mounting screw. It's a bit complicated but it threads into a rotating block at the top. By adjusting the amount of screw that goes through the block you increase or decrease the diameter of the mount. The final torque is applied with a flip lever that holds the other half of the screw. So you get it close with the sliding band, then do the find adjustments with the screw and lock it down with the flip lever. Complicated but saves the need for a screwdriver. There is also small rubber sleeve on part of the band to help prevent slippage.

So in summary

Pros

Durable

Uses AA batteries

Good output

Easy to change batteries

Cons

Bigger than others

Tough switch.

Conclusion

If your looking for a safety light that runs on AA's look no further. They make the 5 LED version for a few bucks more, not a significant difference in output though. - Cycling - Bike Headlight - Night Riding - Bicycle Light'

Liquid Pencil

Whenever I am in a "Staples", I always crave a weird writing instrument. My husband and I oohed and ahhed over this product for twenty seconds, then I promptly forgot about it, only to later discover that he had indeed purchased it. It does not write entirely smoothly, and lotsa times the liquid lead just craps out. Comfy in hand, and erasers work great (I am guessing here that the fact that replacement erasers are included is because this "pencil" will have a lifespan as long as a regular household ballpoint pen), but I cannot endorse it because it will not allow me to endorse anything. Sharpie Liquid Pencil Mechanical Pencils, 2 Mechanical Pencils with Fashion Colored Barrels (1801865)

I bought two of these liquid pencils thinking that they world be great, but when I started to use them, I was not happy. The ink does not come out of the pen well at all and if you finally do get enough ink to write three words, you'll have to stop using it and let the ink come back to the tip again. The eraser works well, but as the liquid doesn't, I usually end up using a pencil. If you do want the whole liquid thing though, get an erasable pen. It will work better. Not a good buy.'

Picture Frame Pliers

In my opinion, it pays to be sceptical of tools at a great value, but this risk paid off. In comparison to Rockler's($62.00), Logan's($25.00), and Big Horn's($12.00), this tool is not a bad grab at $8.00. I can't tell any difference between Peachtree's and Big Horn's products aside from the price. Rockler has always been one of my go to tool sources, but the price difference is dramatic and Peachtree's product works. In my opinion this is a good purchase, and if you have an issue Peachtree's customer service has been excellent. PICTURE FRAME PLIERS BY PEACHTREE WOODWORKING PW609

The picture frame pliers are in use for repair of small and larger clocks that have glass doors and side lights. The pliers are very helpful in installing small nails and the glazing wood strips. The damage to glass is minimized in lieu of using other techniques such as a small hammer and setting punch. The device is a time saver and a very good tool for the use of clock case repair. Since I have the device I have used it for installation of pins in larger clock parts. The tool is fantastic.

One day I may use the tool for picture frames, but am finding lots of other uses.'

Christmas Gift - art set, sketching

This set is perfect for begginners. I purchased mine and received it very quickly in order to complete a portfolio before my deadline. The set contained everything I needed for my drawings in graphite and charcoal.

The speed of delivery was exceptional and everything was in perfect condition when it arrived. The price was also very good. I would buy this again when I need to replace my old set. Pro Art 18-Piece Sketch/Draw Pencil Set

I am very pleased with the pencils in this set they draw beautifully, but I only give this product 3 stars because of the sharpeners, the charcoal sharpener is okay and sharpens the charcoal pencils cleanly, but the graphite pencil sharpener seems to be made of cheap plastic and it doesn't sharpen them as smoothly as it should. A good product if you already have or intend on purchasing a better pencil sharpener.

I have bought very expensive set of pencils that I do not like the way they 'feel' when I draw across paper, but these are smooth and comfortable I will be getting another set when I need them and I do not have to spend 20.00 or more on pencils or others I do not like.

For those who do not know about drawing pencils. There are different numbers and letters at the bottom of the pencils. I use the 2H for light sketching and to draw from the object to the vanishing point because the pencil is light on the paper and it erases easy. Then When I want to darken the lines I use the 2B which is the lightest of the B's for shading I use all the B's which are dark and for the darkest shadows I use 6B which gives the darkest shadow and good for stippling, (dots close together for dark shadowing and further apart for lighter shadowing).

I hope this makes sense for you. I am awful at explaining things.

Okay, so I ordered this kit on 1/4/11. I didn't expect it to be here in 2 days, because Amazon told me 4 days. It arrived at my doorstep in 2 days. No more. I opened it up, and was very excited about it. It had everything it said on the page, and it was just PERFECT for me. I immediately opened it up, and started drawing. I drew the best drawing of a Lamborghini that I had ever done, thanks to this kit. The kneaded eraser was perfect, although it us used up very fast (At least for me.) So that is my review, and if you are considering buying this, BUY IT. You won't be disappointed.

This is exactly what I was looking for. You'll get every type of pencil here. starting from 2h to 6B. extra benefit is you'll get eraser and sharpener ,plus charcoals. It's not only for beginners , proffesional can use it. I'll highly recommend this product.

Honestly, I'm far from the best artist and would hardly be the best judge of quality when it comes to a drawing utensil. For a beginner though, this set is an excellent launch point in learning to draw.

Wow!!! Ive had this product since 2010 and its still doing its job!!! I totally recommed this product for people who love to draw without the need of wasting too much money! For me I love drawing anime characters so getting these made me apreciate the work of anime artist everywhere even more!!!! - Pencil - Art Set - Drawing - Sketching'

I bought this before I had my own baby as a gift for a friend. She said it was fine quality and enjoyed the item. However, we both agree that you don't need as many hats, bibs, and blankets as you get. And you need more pants, which this set doesn't include. Office Supplies - office space, staple removers

What can I say...it's a staple remover.

You pull staples out with it.

Chances are very good that you're going to tear a bit of paper out with the staple.

Especially if you're archiving old papers and our storage people won't take anything with staples.

.....

Just picture a box that's a 12 x 12 and filled with nothing but stapled papers.

I keep telling myself that this task is very Zen.

Who am I kidding, by the end of the day I'd like to take the box of staple filled irrelevant paperwork and throw it down the street right along with the staple remover.

Anyway....it works...the staple remover that is.

I haven't tried throwing the box down the street but if I do, I'm sure someone will stick it on Youtube for the whole planet to laugh at.

Staple remover?

Recommended. Swingline Deluxe Staple Remover, Black (S7038101)

Swingline hit a homerun on this little gem! So simple and functional, yet fun to use. We staple thousands of documents every year and, quite often, we need to remove the staples to scan or copy something. That's where this tool is so handy. Removes the staples cleanly and effortlessly with minimal damage to the paper (two small holes is all).

This staple remover reminds me of the Jaws of Life that firemen use to pry open car doors after auto accidents. I don't think this little tool would work on a smashed-in door, but it works great for removing staples. Highly recommended!

This staple remover is the BEST. I've used the quill branded staple removers and it's very cheap and the parts move as I attempt to take a staple out. Swingline makes very good quality products. The staple remover is very sturdy, and is strong enough to take out almost every regular staple (the heavy duty staples need a bit more work.) The material feels like it's made of great quality too. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a normal staple remover.

This little gadget is very handy to have around, it removes stables quickly and easily. It works exactly as advertised. It does not take much strength to operate. My mother uses it even with arthritis in her hands. Certainly makes stable removing easier than other method.

There isn't much you can say about a staple remover other than whether it works or not. It works just as it was designed to do. We have pulled many staples with it so far and it has worked perfectly each time. The price is great and it beats trying to use a knife or screwdriver to pry staples out of large piles of paper that have been stapled together.

Another one of those things which office and homes can't live without. I hate it when people staple things which don't have to be stapled and this is one of those things you need to remove staples. Without a staple remover, it's a laborious process to remove staples, you have to pry open the tines(?) of the staplers and pull them off, but with this, it's a cinch! I haven't tried any of the other ones, but these things are cheap and easy to use. I have half a dozen of them all over the place so they're always handy.

One of those little items that it is not worth a trip to the store for but is really aggravating to not have. Thought I would try Amazon for some office supplies and was pleasantly surprised by the excellent service and free shipping. Staple puller works pretty good.

This staple remover by Swingline is the perfect, neat and clean way to remove staples from several pages previously stapled together. The product is well made despite its cheap price; it'll last you forever. It takes up very little room and does the job well every time.

Just use the staple remover on the front or top of the staple (the part that is smooth and not the side of the staple that has two edges to it). This should be on the top of the documents that have been stapled together. Use this device to grab hold of the staple using the steel jaws and simply pull up or away from the pages. There you go! The staple comes loose or comes all the way out the first time--and your pages are no longer stapled.

This nifty little product is sure to do its job well--if you catch a sale, stock up for your other office workers if you need to do so. You won't be disappointed. - Staple Removers - Office Space - Home Office - Stapler'

Business Card Scanner - handheld scanner, usb scanner

I'm a graduate student and I spend a lot of time in libraries poring through books that can't circulate (rare, antique, etc.) Some are not even allowed out of specific parts of the university library. This is the answer! I can just roll the wand over the pages, and then I can study the text in the comfort and convenience of my house. I will add a picture of a scanned page for review as a product image. I'll never go back.

Oh, it does eat batteries, but who cares...AAs are cheap. VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Portable Scanner (PDS-ST410-VP)

I bought this scanner for the purpose of scanning pages out of law books at the library. After about two minutes' practice, it was a cinch. In fifteen minutes I was able to scan 30 pages' research, and later downloaded it all to my laptop as .PDF files. The resolution is great, and the scan quality was good enough to use in powerpoint presentations after cropping and magnifying with Microsoft Picture Manager. You can't get scans out of books with a page-fed portable, and a desktop model is too big to carry. Light years better than waiting for the library photocopier.

I purchased this scanner to help in cataloging my DVD and book collections. Frequently I find that the default cover art which is downloaded by the catalog program doesn't match the actual item and all too often the correct image isn't available online. Taking books and DVDs from the library and living room to the flatbed scanner in the office so I can scan the cover art is tedious, so I thought this portable scanner might be a good solution. Unfortunately, the results weren't as good as I had hoped based on the other reviews I read here. It's not that the scanner is "bad" - because it isn't really, it's just that it wasn't as easy to use as I had hoped.

Pros: The scanner is compact, reasonably priced and attractive. Reasonably good results can be achieved with practice.

Cons: In order to produce a good image, the scanner must be moved very carefully. Uneven motion, brief pauses, etc. - basically anything short of consistent movement - will cause distortion in the image.

I've uploaded two examples, one good and one bad, of a DVD cover scan (the movie "10" with Dudley Moore, Julie Andrews, and Bo Derek).

In conclusion, while the scanner is certainly compact and inexpensive, there are limitations which the buyer should be aware of before they decide to purchase.

It has been way too long since anyone made a really usable hand scanner. I've been looking for one for years. So I was very excited when I saw a review of the 'Magic Wand' on one of my news feeds.

This product does the trick. You have to be fairly slow and steady to get a good scan, but hey... it's a hand scanner! So no surprise there. The scan quality is quite acceptable for a device of this type. Not what you would get from a flatbed scanner, but hey... it's a hand scanner! Print is readable, photo quality isn't fantastic but might improve as my scanning skills get better.

The scanner is bundled with 'ABBYY Screenshot Reader', which extracts text from an image. ABBYY is one of the major producers of optical character recognition (OCR)software. I have a document scanner that came with and ABBYY OCR program. But I have never seen a screenshot reader before. This product allows you to select an area on your computer screen, and it will extract text from that area and put it in your clipboard.

So when you scan an image with the 'Magic Wand', you can connect the scanner to your computer with a USB cable (included); open the image in a picture viewer; and use Screenshot Reader to capture the text.

You will probably have to do a bit of touch-up after you paste the text into another application. I have yet to see an OCR program that does perfect text conversion. One trick that helps a lot is to zoom in on the text to make it larger. OCR programs work better with larger text.

I am very pleased with the 'Magic Wand'. I keep it next to my laptop in the living room (yeah, I'm a multi-computer geek, and I do "side surfing" while I'm watching TV) so I can quickly scan things out of magazines or books. And it's small enough to toss in my computer bag when I'm on the road. Along with my Planon Printsitk portable printer (Planon Printstik PS950ME Label Printer - Monochrome - Direct Thermal), I've got a complete office in a bag!

Needed a scanner to use on old newspaper pages that would not fit onto a flatbed scanner. This scanner worked flawlessly from day one. The nicest feature is that there is no software needed on the computer. The scanner stores the scans as jpegs on a memory card (SD; you need to buy one as one does not come with the scanner). When you plug the scanner into the USB port on your computer it appears as a USB memory drive. You just drag the files onto your computer. The quality of the scans at 300 DPI were very very good.

This little device is way better than one would have any right to expect. There have been hand-held scanners in the past, and they have mostly been overpriced and frustrating toys.

This is not. It's a decent quality scanning device. Credit that to the drastic drops in fixed lens camera elements and ccd detectors over the past few years.

You can use this device, after a very modest learning curve, to scan things like text out of book, documents, receipts, etc. Basically, anything that is text based can be scanned pretty well with a little practice.

HOWEVER, this wand is NOT appropriate for scanning photos, blueprints, or any other source material that requires high precision. That's because you WILL have distortions in your scan. That's unavoidable due to the fact that it is impossible to ensure a 100% constant scan rate (or 100% straight path, for that matter) across your source material. For figures/pictures, there's no automated way to correct for this.

Bottom line: I'd recommend this highly to those who have the need for a portable scanner for text based documents. But I would STRONGLY advise against getting this if you expect to use it for photos/figures/blueprints or any other precision document. - Handheld Scanner - Usb Scanner - Mobile Scanner - Document Scanner'

These slips were a gift for my mom, I sent some from a Dept. Store but they were not in the length that she wanted, which is 25" long. The Dept. Stores now only have half slips in much longer lengths, 28"-32". Such a shame for a petite, shorter woman, it would end up going down to her ankles!

I am so happy for my mom that Amazon had these beautiful half slips available, from Vanity Fair which she simply loves and the perfect length, for petite, shorter women. ThinkFun Math Dice helped my grand daughters, ages 8 & 10, improve their math test scores so much within 1 week that the eldest's teacher called to see what we were doing to help her! Flash cards and drills were so boring, the girls acted as though they were being tortured. They really enjoy this game I love the fact that it will grow with them. Right now, they can add, subtract, and multiply so this is all we use, but we will add other math skills as they are acquired, keeping the game fresh and challenging for years to come! Excellent investment! Think Fun Math Dice

I've played this game with my little brother, who hates math by the way, but actually enjoys this game. I don't know if it will ever turn his opinion of math around, but it is definitely improving his skills. Of course anyone who already enjoys math will get a kick out of this game too.

This game caught my attention as I walked through the game section of the local office supply store; I had come in for copy paper, markers, folders, pencils, and a whole bunch of other things. Then, this popped into my head: "Hey, this would be great for anyone of any age."

You can do all four processes: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You can even just make a chart of the frequency of the dice throw results. So, if you use the blue dice with white spots, make a spreadsheet of the numbers on the faces of the dice, one through six, and keep a couple columns for other notes. As you grow in math skills, you will see the law of probabilities show itself to you.

With each throw of the blue dice, you can list the number of dice for each number that shows. If you like, you can total all three dice, and record the result in the last box.

With the white 12-sided dice, you can multiply, divide, add, or subtract. You can create a spreadsheet and show as many combinations of equations as are possible. You can also mark off one of the columns with a symbol for addition, multiplication, subtraction, or division. The possibilities are limitless.

The best feature is that all of these 5 dice, two white and three blue, will fit in the cute little pouch that comes with the item. If you have some kind of tray on which to throw the dice, like a shoebox lid, you could sit in the back seat of the family car, and play the game.

Unless I find someone to give this to, I will take it with me on an airplane flight and give my brain a challenge. Go for it.....It really, really is fun!

I bought this for my 9 year old son, who was falling behind in math since moving to a new school. At first, he was reluctant to try it because it was educational and, therefore, no fun, especially since he wasn't "good" at math anyway! Now, he asks us to play, takes it out on his own, and has shown his friends how to play. He's even learned about powers and is trying them out during our games. My husband is now showing our 5 year old how to play (with some adjustments), and she loves it too. This is a great game that's inexpensive, easy to learn, quite addictive, as challenging as you want it to be, and fun for everyone if you have the imagination to adjust the rules a little. It's a perfect stocking stuffer for those (including grown-ups) who enjoy doing math puzzles, and is absolutely essential for every kid who thinks math is dumb, hard, or boring!

most people think this game looks nerdy and boring.then they try it. it is really fun.you roll dice to get three numbers and use them in any way(addition, subtraction, exponents, etc)to get as close as you can to a certain number.it is fun and very educational.

The directions are okay, but I feel they could of been a tad more illustrated. I love the bag it comes with and the dice are clear and great dice. Decent price for odd dice, but may want to be a little lower. Great game, for one, but would be more fun if I had friends into math...on the whole,I highly recommmend this game for homeschoolers/unschoolers and even school kids. This game is a good fearless approach to equation set up recollection. There are so many ways to add/subtract/divide numbers to get an equation answer that no one really ever remembers them all. So, give a gift that will help reinforce the concept of equation setup and maybe it'll lead to reduced math anxiety. I love math, but I'm horrid at it. I found that learning it from textbooks (soley) is not the route to take for me. I love that there are more games, and computer programs out there other than just textbooks. Not that there's anything wrong with a textbook, but easy hands on access does something worth while to the brain. Use manipulatives to teach/learn/have fun with not just the book. Especially in this digital age.

The idea is excellent - simple and powerful. Played with my son and we both loved it. Will take it with us when traveling. One can add rules and introduce more and more math into it (powers and factorials are just two ideas we used). All in all - very good and should help to develop math skills for the 2-5 graders.

I bought this product because my daughter is learning multiplication and division in school. This is a fun and addictive skill game that has her use all of the skills she has learned in math. Not bad for the adults to brush up on math too.'

Kwikset Door Handles - satin nickel, deadbolt

Started with my front door and added these levers all around my house. They look fabulous, feel great in the hand, and function flawlessly.

Here's a tip, I used the Satin Chrome outside - instead of a coated finish like the satin nickle - it is actually solid chrome that is brushed then to get a satin finish (so it looks nearly identical to the satin nickle) but stand up much better to the elements (doesn't rust) and sharp keys that would otherwise scratch the satin nickle or brass finish. I use satin nickle everywhere else in my house and the satin chrome on the exterior door is standing up beautifully! (Worth the extra few bucks). Schlage F10ACC619 Accent Passage Lever, Satin Nickel

The product was certainly simple to install. Very few steps required. The mechanism was a little sticky when we first got it and we had to spend some time moving the handle to distribute the grease, but it works find now.

I was hesitant due to the price point as I can usually purchase this type of door lever for around $10 but not with the Schage name of course. I needed to match a Schlage nickle finish for an outside door were it would be noticeable and so I made this purchase. I have to admit the fit and finish is worth the price. Very smooth action and perfect finish...comes with several plate options for the latch...

I installed these knobs (some were the lockable privacy ones) in 3 apartment units two years ago. All have worked without a hitch and still look great.

These knobs are half the price (or less) than a lot of comparable looking lever knobs. So what's the diff? Two things I've noticed.

1. The levers are a bit shorter than most of this design. That doesn't bother me at all. I think they look fine and the tenant feedback we've had is that they look great.

2. They're kind of lighter weight - hollow feeling. I don't know what the actual construction is. But they feel less solid and have less heft than (much) more expensive knobs.

But I'm buying knobs for my own house now and I'll probably buy these.

I got mine at Wal(l)*Mart. Not on their website but at the local store. They didn't have many in stock and several of the boxes were open. I ended up having to order them, so Amazon would've been easier anyway - and close to the same price.

One other note: I've read a lot of complaints online about Satin nickel finishes flaking off on OTHER lower priced products ( I've seen some comments about Hdepot house brand glacier bay stuff), but so far so good with these Schlage knobs. - Keyless Deadbolt - Deadbolt - Lock - Satin Nickel'

Historical Fiction - circus life, elephants

I'm not your typical romance genre reader (not that I have anything against romance, it's just not a huge priority for me when choosing my personal reading material). Sarah Pawley does a wonderful job with characterization and painting the era her characters inhabit. The heroine's journey of self-discovery is very relatable to independent women of any era, not just the one she inhabits. I especially appreciated that the characters are drawn in shades of grey (i.e. no one is completely good or bad) - not only does it make the people more real, but it made me much more invested in the story. An excellent debut novel - I am looking forward to great things from Pawley. Finding Grace: A Novel

I'm a big romance consumer! I love nothing more than a good romance novel or a sweet romantic comedy and Finding Grace has met and exceeded my expectations. Not only is it a sweet, romantic love story but also an interesting character study of people. Indeed, I think it is this the book's strong point. It captured me from the first chapter with it's brave, yet undiscovered, heroine who admires Jane Eyre without realizing just how much she has in common with her and the harsh, almost oppresive surroudings she has to inhabit ... The mother and father are truly realistic and strangley enough remain true to their first depiction until the end which I think shows real courage on the authors part to be realistic and not sugar coat the things she feels strongley about ...

The novle also gives a subtle, admiring nod to Pride and Prejudice which I for one loved!

All in all, a lovley first book! Highly recommanded to anyone who enjoys witty romance.

I recieved an advanced copy of this book and I wasn't sure what to expect. I've been let down by many novels recommended to me, but this book was such a pleasant suprise. The characters are well drawn and feel so genuine. Grace Langdon is a spunky, intelligent heroine, and her struggle to find love and independence are something most anyone can relate to. Henry Shaw was another favorite of mine - a troubled man who is made bitter by hard knocks, but lightened by love. I would recommend this story to anyone looking for a sweet, romantic summer read.

I must admit, "Finding Grace" by Sarah Pawley, is the second book that I have read since I was a teenager. I used to get lost in the fantasy world created by Danielle Steele as a young adult. Sarah Pawley reunited me with that sort of vision. Once I started reading "Finding Grace", I instantly got forced into the ever loving main character, "Gracie". A sweet seventeen year old country girl, filled with rebellious characteristics. A woman after my own heart, I found myself relating to her in many ways. A true romantic, looking for her everlasting love, her journey takes her from a small country town in Virginia to the big city life of Chicago. Based in a time of the late 1920's, the author captures the time period extremely well.

Living with her parents and brothers, she experiences the wrath of hard work and a stern father. Grace feels held back in her small town with no modern amenities yet she loves the country side where she can roam free to think and read her favorite books. When a marriage is forced upon her by her parents she breaks free of their grip and ran for the city to join her brother in Chicago. Once she finally gets to her destination, she finds herself in awe of all the newness of her surroundings.

As the tale unfolds, the author captures every essence of Grace's new discovers. Even something as small as a refrigerator or bathtub, the author illustrates the little delicacies we take for granted in life today.

Sarah Pawley nails this book when it comes to a romantic love story based on two people that should never be together. Kudos' to her for writing such a wonderful, everlasting tale, which was embedded in my soul!

Finding Grace is just the sort of sappy, romantic stuff I love, and when the story worked, it worked beautifully. Except it didn't always work. Parts of it felt forced. In the first chapter, Ms. Pawley went to great lengths to stress how Grace's personality was willful, strong, and that when riled, she was a force to be reckoned with. This set-up was totally unnecessary as she did an excellent job showing us Grace's character during the telling of the story.

Also, I had difficulty with how Grace initially felt about Henry Shaw. He was certainly handsome, but his behavior toward her (and his female companion) was reprehensible. Why did Grace spend so much time dwelling on her fear of having her heart broken by such a horrid man? It would have been much more believable for Grace to admit that the only reason she couldn't stop thinking about him was because he was so good-looking and then berate herself for it after each encounter with him. An opinionated and strong character should not just up and fall in love with a cad just because he's handsome. Fortunately, once Ms. Pawley got over this hump, the remainder of the romance was nothing less than ooey, gooey yumminess!

The final aspect of the story I take issue with is poor Charlie. It's like Ms. Pawley couldn't make up her mind whether he should be a victim or a villian, and having him be a Jekyll/Hyde type simply didn't work. He started out sympathetic enough, but even after Grace rejected him and we saw another side to his personality, I was still hopeful that the romance would revolve around Grace showing him how to be a man she could love and completely give herself to. It's because he was initially shown to be such a sympathetic character that I never really believed the change in him when he became violent and verbally abusive. And because Grace initially fostered such tender feelings for him, I also found it hard to believe she could completely turn on him in one evening. Henry Shaw's behavior was no worse, and not only did Grace tolerate it, she couldn't stop thinking about him. When Charlie came to Chicago looking for her, he continued being Jekyll and Hyde. First, he was the angry monster, but then he became repentent, and ultimately I couldn't help feeling bad for him upon learning his fate. I think this character would have worked better as either a victim who returns home a broken man after a final rejection, or a straight-out villian, whose ultimate fate would have been justified.

There were also a few typos and one glaringly ill-constructed sentence whose existence in a published book is absolutely inexcusible. But overall, it was an enjoyable read: good romantic escapism. - Circus Life - Fiction - Circus - Elephants'
