Contemporary Fiction - comedy, contemporary fiction

3 and 1/2 stars.

Why I Read this Book: I've seen The Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook described as the male-equivalent to Bridget Jones's Diary. I thought BJD was hilarious so I wanted to read The Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook. I was even more curious to read a Chick-Lit book written from the main male character's POV, figuring it would be quite a change from the norm. It was.

What I Liked: The book begins on January 16th, the day Edward discovers that Jane, his girlfriend of 10 years, has left him. The reader follows Edward through his 4 month self-discovery journey. Edward's best friend, Dan, helps him through the process in a hilariously yet sincere (at least to Dan's prospective) manner. These 4 months help Edward to assess and re-evaluate his relationship with Jane. The book ends on April 16, shortly after Jane has returned from her own self-discovery journey in Tibet. The whole time I was reading this book I wanted to know if they would get back together or not.

I grew fond of Edward's character and I wanted to make sure that everything turned out right for him. He got a new insight to life and relationships. Edward really transforms himself, inside and out, and in the end he gets the HEA he deserves.

Dan and his `logic' were most hysterical. Most of which was the blunt, honest truth. Dan doesn't sugarcoat anything, nor does his mouth have a filter, he just tells it like he sees it. Dan's analogies were sometimes spot on, sometimes not, but always down right hilarious.

Funny stuff that comes out of Dan's mouth:

"You're dressed like a scarecrow. And what do scarecrows do?"

"Cool jacket, Dan. How will they ever resist me?" [Edward] says, strutting up and down in front of the mirror.

Dan shakes his head. "Edward, it's a nice jacket. Not a magic jacket."

And here's a word of advice from Edward's personal trainer:

"If it jiggles, it's fat."

The funny part about this line is that it took place in a restaurant during the trainer's assessment of Edward. No advanced equipment needed; just a jiggle test. These quotes still give me a good chuckle.

What I Didn't Like: The beginning was a bit slow for me. But once Edward got over his woe is me pity party and started doing something about his situation, I was invested in finding out how his life was going to turn out.

There were a few times when I had to pause and think for a moment about what a particular word or phrase meant. Some I even had to Google. For instance: pint of snakebite (a drink of equal parts beer and cider), kerb (curb), boot of a car (the trunk), jumper (pull-over sweater), snog (kiss and cuddle) and aerial (antenna) - just to name a few. Nothing I couldn't figure out but it did pause my reading from time to time.

Overall Impression: Fans of Bridget Jones's Diary and Chick-Lit will love the male insight from Edward's POV and the humor that comes along with it. They need to make of movie from this book! The Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook would be a great Valentine's Day read. Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook

Are you in the need for a funny book? Do you want something that will make you forget about your own problems? Looking for a light read after all that heavy reading? Have you ever wondered what goes on in guy's mind? Do you like hot British guys? If you said yes to any of these questions, then this is the perfect book that will fulfill all your needs and more.

Oh Edward. What can I say about you? Nice guys always wonder why they never get the girl? Well, if you're like Edward, it's understandable why. His long time girlfriend has left him with only a note saying that, yes it is him, as to why she left. But he can't figure out why she has. Therefore the whole book is his quest to become the guy Jane wants and be the guy that is her Mr. Right. This includes everything from changing his car, his apartment, his eating habits and hiring a personal trainer.

Ok, there were times when reading that I wanted to throttle Edward for being so dumb. Oh my gosh, he was so clueless at times! I kept putting my head in my hands and groaning and his lack of knowledge or for just being so dense at a lot of things. There's a scene that Edward recalls about why he never got Jane flowers while they were dating because of an incident involving stopping at a gas station, getting expired roses, and her telling him never to do that again and him literally taking her word for it to mean to never get her flowers again. I was like "ohhhh, no you didn't Edward" over and over again during the first half of the book. The poor guy is literally absolutely dumbfounded as to why Jane left him but as he reveals more and more stuff about their relationship, it's easy to understand why she did. He's not a bad guy at all. In fact, he IS a good guy, in fact he's a really nice guy. But just being nice isn't going to cut it if you're not a good boyfriend.

Granted, Dan wasn't the best person to teach Edward things. He's a total playboy (if this was ever made into a movie, this role would be perfectly portrayed by Jude Law) who pretty much forgets about the girl he was with the next morning. There's quite a bit that he has to learn as well and it's fun watching him grow throughout the book and seeing his character change. Still, most of the advice he gives Edward is food for thought and there is some good changes he instills on him.

This book pretty much had me a fan from the first page. It's really nice to see a chick lit novel written from the guy's perspective. Women always complain about how we never know what a guy is thinking and that he's absolutely clueless when it comes to treating us right. Well, if men are anything like Edward, well then they ARE absolutely clueless! But what makes Edward stand out is that he was willing to change. He wanted to become what he thought Jane wanted and while doing so became the guy that truly was meant to be. This sounds a bit cliched but it's true. I really loved reading this book (hot British guys with accents!) and it's made me fall in love with Matt Dunn's style of writing. I see that he has several books in his backlist so I will definitely be checking those out in the near future. Single, dating, married, doesn't matter what stage of life you are in, this book is TONS of fun. HIGHLY recommended. - Comedy - Contemporary Fiction'

Corded Rotary Tool - hobby tool, rotary tool

This tool works as expected, flawlessly. I picked up two high speed cutters for use on a custom air filter backplate. Speed variability seems like it would fit anyone's needs. The cord on it was around 3-4' long. The bits with it are nice, but if you are looking for something in particular you can probably find a more suitable one. Only complaint is that it doesn't always seem to turn on at the lowest setting. This isn't really a problem since you can turn it on higher and slow it down. I am not sure if I got one with a finicky switch or not. Regardless I would buy again.

Got it from a local dealer because I didn't want to wait for shipment, however amazon was cheaper. Dremel 300-1/24 300 Series Variable-Speed Rotary Tool Kit

I have bought 3 Dremel tools over the years, and none has stood up to moderate use. Usually the speed control goes: either the tool will only run at top speed, or, in the current 300-series models, it quits altogether. Also, the ball bearings Dremel boasts about are not sealed, so they fail due to the dust from whatever you're cutting or grinding getting into them.

No other power tool is so fragile or short-lived: you can get a decent 3/8" electric drill or an angle grinder for about the same amount of money, and they'll last forever. If drills failed so easily, the customers would riot and nobody would buy the company's product. To be fair, I've had the same experience with a Ryobi rotary tool I bought about ten years ago. But it was cheap -- only about $20 -- so I didn't feel quite so shafted when it stopped working.

With the Dremel, you pay a high price for a shoddy product. If you could replace the parts that go bad, that might be bearable. It used to be that you could buy replacement parts. Of course, you couldn't just replace the ball bearings with decent sealed ones -- because you couldn't get them off the armature. You had to buy a whole new armature.

But now, you don't even have that option. Dremel has stopped making replacement parts available!

So now, when the machine packs up, that's it: your expensive Dremel is now a piece of useless disposable junk. Your investment is down the toilet. Dremel talks a big game about quality, etc., but they treat their customers with utter contempt.

As for me, I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and shell out hundreds for a Foredom or something equivalent. They're even more expensive, and they're not as easy to use for my purposes, but they have a reputation for holding up. We'll see.

This is the first "dremel" tool I've ever owned. I've had it for less than a year, and I've already used it to do a variety of jobs around the house -- mostly involving cutting openings in drywall. It is very durable and comes with basically one of each bit. Replacements are sold separately, like at Lowes. I've used it for lawn mower sharpening, cutting copper pipe, old-job box installs, etc.

My only issue with this tool, and it may be true for all "dremel" tools across the board, is that there is no dead-man-switch. There is absolutely no safety on this device what so ever. Imagine if your corded/cordless electric drill had a top-mounted On-switch instead of a trigger. Or your circular saw just kept whirling away if you released your hand. Now, imagine what would happen if you just happened to drop it while using it. Yeah! That's this tool! The bit spins so fast! This thing would easily go through flesh without even thinking about it. It could easily scratch and mark metal, wood, stone, plastic, anything! If you dropped it, it could easily mean the start of a very bad day!

The first time I turned it on, the bit shot out across the room because I failed to tighten it. That was my error - I admit that. My pregnant wife was in the room at the time. No one was hurt, but that could have been a very different story. I've since taken very specific actions to use gloves, glasses, muffs, and make sure anyone not needed is well out of the way. All the safety equipment and forethought aside, you could still drop it accidentally. Slips a little, you instinctually react and reach for it. The device is rather small; your hand's rather big. Boohoo for you.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't get it. I'm not saying all triggered power tools are toys by comparison. I'm just saying that this device isn't exactly Little Timmy's woodworking hobby. Be aware and take it seriously.

Overall, I give it four stars. I would give it six stars if it had a trigger interface though.

I have an old Dremel 395, and I recently purchase a 4000 and most recently this 300 series kit. These are all being put to use in an electronics station I've built for different purposes. By far, my old 395 is a far, far better built and more precise tool. You can even tell by the weight of the old 395 that it is a tougher tool. The 4000 is a decent tool, but the feel of it is just light, and cheap, but at least the shaft seems to be centered and true. This 300 I just bought has a very noticeable wobble and bind to the shaft, and I called Dremel about this issue. I was surprised by their attitude and the response of "Dremels are not precision tools". Basically, the conversation ended with "if you don't like it, return it to the store" and was left with a feeling they have tossed quality out the window to save money on production, and it doesn't concern them. I was going to use the 300 in the Dremel workstation's drill press I bought for use with very small drill bit work on circuit cards, but the wobble is so bad I know it will snap the bits. Instead, the 4000 I bought will be used on the drill press, and I have decided to use this 300 instead with the flex shaft I bought since it doesn't seem to impede it's operation any, so that will be it's job from now on. Very, very disappointed with you Dremel. You were always better than this. Also... I would like to note that many of their grinding bits are poorly centered now and off balance. If Dremel doesn't get their act together, they'll gain a reputation of poor quality, and that's hard to shake. I'll be looking elsewhere on the internet for old 395's from now. - Multitool - Rotary Tool - Hobby Tool - Corded Rotary Tools'

Pc Vga To Tv Converter - junk, no good

This MAY be for use with a special device that has a USB port on it which INTERFACES with your computer, but THIS IS NOT FOR PLUGGING UP TO YOUR COMPUTER.

***** >>>>>>> DO NOT PLUG TO YOUR COMPUTER <<<<<<<<< *******

Do not be fooled by the little "box" in the middle of the cable which some might believe is an analog-composite-video-signal to digital-serial converter. It is not.

I disassembled the cable to see what it was, and it is merely 3 RCA connectors going to the USB port. That's all! This can damage your USB port and/or the audio/video device you plug it into. Here's why, and here is the PINOUT of the cable:

* The ground of the RCA connectors is also the ground of the USB port as well as the Data ground (D-) on the USB port!

* The "Right Audio" composite pin is actually the +5 Vcc on the USB port! This will inject 5 volts into your video/audio device if plugged in!!

* The "Left Audio" and "Video" composite pins go to the Data positive (D+) on the USB port!

Again YOU WILL FRY YOUR USB PORT AND/OR YOUR VIDEO DEVICE if you plug this cable in and connect it up. 3 RCA to USB Cable

It is absolutely an amazing deal, just perfect for watching vhs tapes or dvd's on your monitor (which is what I am using it for)FREE SHIPPING is another nice perk. Whatever you are using this converter for it is worth it(exept if you are trying to use it to connect your laptop to your tv because its only supposed to be able to input not output) So don't listen to all the reviews that say this is a horrible product because it didn't connect their laptop to their tv. Great product, Great deal, and Great seller!

the reason you can't use it for connecting laptop to tv is because of the direction of travel of the information. your laptop's video OUTPUT does not go through the usb ports, it will go through either and s-video connection or a serial port. this cable is for input to laptop, not output from it. so connect dvd player, vcr, camcorder, etc. and you're fine. so, yes, the people who are complaining about not being able to use to connect to tv's are indeed foolish, know what you're doing, people, do some research first. if and only if your tv has rca outputs, which most do not nowadays, then you could use it to record what's on tv, but easier just to connect to your cable box or dvd player or something. - Computer Cables - Rca Cables - No Good - Junk'

Core Strength - core strength, exercise ball

This product is great and so far I had no problem with it all but I got a letter through the mail that said something about this product being recalled because if you inflate it too much it can explode and cause some injuries.

Maybe they have fixed this problem now cause I got it awhile back.

So other than that problem, this product is good.

It is smaller than I'd imagine. (A little bigger than a baseball and smaller than a basketball.) Valeo WFB6 6 lb. Weighted Fitness Ball (6 lb)

I shouldn't be that disappointed since I probably didn't read the description closely enough, but it was much smaller than I expected. Other wise it is as advertised. Anyway, my wife seems to like it fine!

This ball is a smaller cousin of the medicine ball. It's softball-sized, rather than basketball-sized. Its size and weight are great. Its texture leaves a lot to be desired. The shell is *very* smooth. If your hands sweat at all, holding the ball for medium-speed and high-speed motions is going to be dicey. As long as its use is restricted to slow motions, it's O.K. Ideally, the ball would have more of an orange-peel surface like basketballs and Valeo's medicine balls have. Having a rough surface would make this O.K. product into a great product.

Very good product. Just the right size for our use during exercises. HS baseball team using these during our core exercise routine. Very affordable and recommend this as an inexpensive alternative to the larger med balls.

I purchased this ball as an inexpensive (and more easily packable) alternative to a medicine ball. It works great for my exercise program.

Because it is slightly soft, it's easy to grip one handed, or you can inflate it if you like more of a medicine ball-like feel. No regrets! - Exercise Ball - Medicine Ball - Fitness Ball - Core Strength'

Garden Flag Holder

This is made very well, and it came with one round flag "stop". I am very pleased. It is heavier than others I have seen in the past, and it also has thick round cylinders on the bottom, probably to be sturdier when you put it in the ground. I love it! Garden Flag Stand

I just finished landscaping my front yard. The garden stand along with the flag I ordered look so good. I received the stand quickly and in good shape. It was hard to find this type of stand..one piece with the design I wanted. It was even better when I got it because it was a made by Breeze Art. Great buy!'

Colored Pencils - colored pencils, art supplies

THis product is worth the price. The purple color is different than the regular glue which is something new. overall i like this product but the downside is if you get it on your hands while working on your project its kind of hard to keep working on it because you constantly have to go wash your hands because its really sticky. However it works great on gluing stuff. I personally used it for my poster presentation and it worked like a charm. After i glued it nothing came apart which is a big plus. I got it for like fifty-cent when it was on sale so for the money it is definitely worth it. It does the job i would definitely recommend this product. Body Ball - body ball, ball

At 5'1", this stability ball is perfect for my height Although the photo shows the ball to be a silvery color, mine is actually a pearly white, which I prefer. Working out with the ball is fun, so it makes it seem much easier. My abs and arms really felt it the next day. Valeo Body Ball (55 cm)

I orgianlly ordered the white ball withut realizing that it was meant for people shorter than I am (5' 9"). The Amazon page for it never mentioned that different balls were for different height users. When the ball arrived the sizing was made clear on the box. So I returned it and ordered this ball (Blue, 65CM) which is meant for my height. Having used balls in my health club, but without ever noticing their size, I was surprised at how large 65 cm was. When properly inflated this ball is too large for me; many of the exercises one does with these balls require wrapping the legs around the ball, which is difficult when it is too large. On the Amazon order page for this (blue) ball and the larger (red) ball, the size/height relationship is stated, and I do fall into the range of this 65 cm ball. But it is simply too large--a fact you can't realize until you inflate it.

I love this exercise ball. I am a small person and the size is perfect for me. This ball would be a great addition to any fitness routine because you can tailor your routine to your level. I especially enjoy giving my abs a workout with this ball!

This ball works great. I am 5'4" and this ball is perfect for me. I have had it for a few months and I use it a lot. It's white and surprisingly shows no signs of dirt or hard use. The rubber surface keeps you in position on the ball. A great buy.

I love the body ball. I bought it for a specific purpose but if you aren't sure how to incorporate the body ball into your workout, it comes with a few exercises you can try. It was also reletively cheap.

Excellent exercise aid. Very durable and priced well. Previously, I had a 65 cm ball which was too large for me. Now that I have the correct size I find that I can perform core strenghtening excercises without back pain.

When I took it out of the box, besides its extremely strong chemical odor, I noticed it seemed to have some kind of wet substance all over it that rubbed off on my hands when I touched it (the consistency of lotion). I have no idea what it was. On the plus side, it comes with a measuring tape to let you know when it is inflated enough. However, the pump that comes with it was extremely labor intensive and a lot of pumping didn't accomplish much. The smell and the wet feel of the plastic was enough for me. I'm going to buy another higher quality brand. I guess you get what you pay for! - Ball - Body Ball - Exercise - Stability Ball'

Impact Driver - drill, 18 volt

I've been using this kit heavily to finish a basement room. I did some shopping around originally to upgrade my old 9.6 V cordless. I had narrowed it down the Dewalt DC720KA, the Milwaukee 18v compact, or the BDF142 when I came upon this kit. I never used an impact driver before this, but I discovered all the pros now do their screw driving with these. I'm glad I decided to give it a try!

Impact Driver: I will never drive wood screws with a drill again! Significantly less pressure is required to keep the phillips bit in contact with the screw head. I've driven 3" wood screws all week and not a single stripped head. It can install a fastener in tight places where a drill or hammer/nail just can't go. Superior torque will bury the screw (head and all) as deep in the wood as you want to go. I will use this more than any other tool in the kit. It is a little beast!

Drill: Good combination of power and speed. Enough to push a 1 1/4" self feeding bit through 3 1/2" of pressure treated lumber the high torgue setting. 5/8" self feeding bits eat through studs in a flash on the high speed setting. It is light like a cordless tool should be, and has the best power/weight ratio of any cordless by far. It comes with a quality chuck and plenty of torque. I think the drill is slightly better than the compact 18v Milwaukee and just a shade behind the Dewalt DC720KA which are both fine products.

Light: Has four convenient head angle adjustments from 0 degrees to about 110 degrees and a strap for hanging. Not a primary reason to buy this kit, but it's come in really handy for me.

Kit positives: Nice compact case has room for drill bits and accessories. Batteries do charge in 15 minutes. These tools have serious power. The combo of the drill and impact driver is unbeatable at this price. You would spend twice this to get the equivalent from another manufacturer. All three of the tools are a pleasure to use. The led light on the drill and impact driver does come in handy when you are working in dark corners.

Kit negatives: Run time might not be enough for heavy duty users. Not a problem for me; quick charge time makes up for it. I can use the impact drive all day on two full battery charges. Most of the black on these tools is rubber except for the raised Makita logo, which is paint. I've jammed the impact driver into some tight places which has caused some of that paint to scratch off. You can buy belt clips for these tools off e-bay which is only a minor inconvenience.

Overall: Considering what you get for the price, this is a five star kit. Makita LCT300W 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 3-Piece Combo Kit

First off, I'm a professional fabricator, and i've been typically really hard on my tools, especially cordless tools, but these have far exceeded my expectations. I bought this setup when i was in a jam, my heavy duty 18v Milwuakee crapped out after only 2mos of service, and only a week back from its first warranty repair (I'm no longer a milwuakee fan, sadly). Well, needing to finish a project for monday, and stuck looking for a new driver/drill on a saturday night, I picked up the combo kit at a Home Depot minutes before closing, figuring it would get me through the project, and the impact driver might come in handy for some light duty projects later on.

Well I was amazed after working with these for 4 mos solid. So small yet so powerful, and far more rugged than i would have expected for their light weight and plastic-y feel. And wow, did i say they are small? I mean i can put the impact driver in the side pocket on my cargo shorts, or back pocket of my carhartts and comfortably climb a ladder like that. They seriously lighten my load when I'm lugging a bag of tools to a gig outside the shop, too.

The only drawback I've found is an entirely acceptable compromise for the light weight and easy handling, which is short battery life between charges. But Makita makes up for this by including a sophisticated and fast charger.

In short, this works really great for the sort of work that cordless tools do well for; tough intermittent tasks where access is tight. Sure it doesn't have all of the brawn of some of the full-size makita 18v line, but really when i need that sort of power, I'll want to be using something Pneumatic or AC-driven.

Buy it if you need a lightweight tool for intermittent use. If you need something to replace a corded/pneumatic tool out in the field, you might want to bump up to the full size (lxt) line.

Have had this kit for just under a year. The weight of the tools is phenomenal. Very light and excellent balance. The impact gun is pretty impressive. The drill, however, doesn't really have the ooomph I was hoping for. And if you are doing a lot of drilling, expect your batteries to get very hot, and also to take a very long time to cool down before the charger will start charging them. I've had these guns heat up quite a bit while under heavy use, so much so that I've had to put gloves on. This is drilling into steel, by the way. These are great guns for the price and the weight, but under heavy usage (I'm a scenic carpenter in the entertainment industry), the drill is less than impressive. And the clutch just died on it. I'm going to stick with Makita, but I'm going for the more powerful guns.

The new LiOn driver usually runs near two hundred by itself. Add the impact driver that goes for close to this price AND include the spotlight and you definitely have a winner.

I've used the driver myself and it is a joy to use. It is very lightweight and the batteries charge in 15 minutes. So even if I'm using the drill full time, I can't run out of juice.

Anyone as confused by the compact vs regular lithium technology in these Makita Drills as I was?

I have used both the compact and the LXT version of the Makita Lithium cordless tool sets. Mostly the impact driver and drill/driver. I am a electrical contractor and am pretty hard on my tools.

First both sets worked great. However, I did find that I spent considerable amount of time fetching new batteries with the compact version of the drills. I found this to be irritating, and prefered to use the LXT lithium drill as it lasted twice as long and had maybe just a little more UMMMPHHH to it.

One of my employees who has long struggled with tendonitis in his arm will use nothing else besides the compact version. It is about a pound lighter and it makes enough difference, of course he gets paid the same whether he changes the battery pack ten times a day or five.

Bottom line, both drills work very well. The compact is so light it makes it worth it for people doing lighter use, difficult position, or constant ladder work. But overall I would say it is better suited for the serious homeowner/weekend-warrior rather than the full time contractor. The regular LXT(non-compact) tools, although just a little heavier, are still much lighter than previous technologies and feel like a bag of feathers in comparison to a Dewault. They also lasted longer on a single charge(twice the storage capacity in the battery cells), which was the key selling point for me and the little extra power (insert Tim the toolman grunt here) was well worth it. Then again, if I am light duty user/homeowner and not using these tools daily, the compact version would certainly fit better into my budget and would still do everything I needed it too. - Drill - 18 Volt - Lithium-ion - Impact Driver'

For Do-it-yourselfe - tile, wet tile saw

I ordered these based upon the recommendation of my tile supplier for a 2000 SF porcelain tile project (they didn't have my size in stock). Now I can't see using any other blade for porcelain at this point. They lasted a whole lot longer than I expected them to at this price point.

Just one thing to be aware of; for the first 30-40LF or so this blade is VERY aggressive cutting until the rim settles in, try to avoid any critical edge cuts at first. After it settles in it strikes a great balance between longevity, cut speed and cut quality. MK Diamond 158434 MK225 Hot Dog Premium Thin Rim Blade

I've cut alot of tile in my life. Once I purchased this blade my cuts are more accurate, faster cutting and this blade really lasts. I've cut everything with this blade without any hesitation, including granite and travertine.

Nice blade, maybe a bit overkill for a DIY on a small job. Worth it if you've got > 500sqft to do. I used it for 500sqft of Porcelain tile and another 250sqft of travertine. The porcelain as expected it cut through like butter, but it did just as good of job on the travertine w/ no chipping.

It was installed in a Husky 7" Wet saw w/ stand (THD-950)

I'm glad I ordered this blade at the same time I received my MK-170 from MK Diamond. My entire bath remodel is in porcelain, and this blade cut almost like butter. My only disappointments are the price (high) and where made (Korea). I bought it from MK Diamond thinking that it was made by their firm in Calif. It was shipped out of a vendor warehouse in Illinois. It doesn't have an arrow indicating how it should be installed. If you put it on your saw with the print facing you as it's installed, you should be okay. The company is a little thin on any instructions or information about the blade. Overall, a good blade, though a tad on the expensive side.

The price through Amazon was reasonable for the performance of this blade. Worked as advertised. Cut Travertine and ceramic like going through butter, with no chipped edges. I have used pricier blades that worked as well, but why spend extra when you don't have to? Can't speak of longevity yet ... only did one room with it.

UPDATE: Have cut through a ton of tile with this thing. Blade life is at least as good as pricier blades. Good blade - good price. - Tile Saw - Tile - Wet Tile Saw - Mk'
