Bike Pumps - inflatable kayak, bike pump
My complaints aren't to many. its is a little uncomfortable using your foot. Ir is plastic underneath so it doesn't hold a lot of friction with the ground and it slides sometimes. But in general it is a good pump. I used with my inflatable boat and it was just fine. Advanced Elements Bellows Foot Pump Large
It's a good pump. A little large, but not bad. About as big around as a dinner plate. It has several different nozzles that hang right where you need them. My wife and I use them for our inflatable kayaks and they inflate in a hurry. My only complaint is the pump nozzles often fall off the kayak nozzles whenever you let go of them, which makes working the foot pump a little awkward by yourself. But if I had to buy a pump again, I would go with this one.
Very nice, handy, strong, inflates quickly. we used it for the advanced Elements Lagoon 2 inflatable kayak and it's perfect: it has the right pieces to connect to the kayak and it can inflate it and deflate it quickly. I've also used it for a camping mattress when a buddy of mine came to visit and it was perfect for that as well - Bike Pump - Kayak - Boating - Inflatable Kayak'

Heatsink - liquid cooling, cpu coolers
Product is very nice..... when it says in the instructions turn screw till it stops.. they mean it... the screw will snap if you torc it at all... but they will send you new ones free....
Fans are very quiet,,,,, unit is very very tall... I installed the Noctua CPU heatsync solution in in a Coolmaster 690 II Advanced case and could not install the upper side cover fan with the Noctua heatsync in the system. Case is too narrow or heatsync is too tall depending on how you look at it.
The Noctua instructions say you may have to remove the fins from Dominator memory installed with this heatsync solution but this was not required with the fans oriented to blow towards the rear of the case (recommended for optimal air flow) on an ASUS P6X58D systemboard.
I really like the Noctua CPU heatsync solution and would buy it again.
Fans are very very quiet Noctua CPU Cooler NH-U12P SE2
This cooler/fan is one of the best available. Only reason i say "one of the best" is because there is probably a "better" one somewhere. I have only used 4 different coolers of the past couple of years and this one is by far the very best. I had used a Cooler Master V8 and it was pitiful.
The Noctua is so easy to install, just carefully follow directions and it is really as easy as 1-2-3.
I bought one and it is working perfectly on my i7-920.
Some things to factor in are:
1) Will the heat sink extend over your memory slots? If it does you may need to factor if your memory dimms are too tall. Especially if they have the tall risers for their own heat dissipation.
2) Take your time when putting it together. The metal clips that hold the fans to the sink can be tricky. There are videos on youtube. Also ensure you get a good smooth application of the thermal compound. Not too much and not too little with an even distribution.
3) Make sure it fits in your case. This is a big item.
4) The ideal way to set this is up is so the heat is dissipating up. However if your case does not have a vent on top you may need to set this up to point out the back.
I used this on a new build with a Cooler Master 690 II Advanced case and it will fit with about a 1/2 inch to spare. The Noctua brown fans are not much to look at but are high end fans and very quiet. I have been running my quad core I7 pretty good the last several hours and it barely breaks 40 degrees C. I do have a lot of extra fans installed and I am sure that helps a lot.
The written instructions are very good. The only down side to this cooler is that the fans are not easy to install on the cooler. You can not install them before you mount it on the mother board. I found that if you hook up the clips on the fans closest to the board first it goes much easier since you can't get your hands in there very well. But once they are installed they are solid.
Bought this cooler for my new system, and it just plain works. CPU (Xeon E5620) is consistently cool (always less than 40 degrees C at peak load), and the fans are quite quiet.
Only negative: it is big, and getting the fan clips on is very finicky. It was challenging to install these inside my Antec P183 case, but once they are in place it all fit quite well.
The Noctua U12P cooler is hands down one of the best cpu coolers available in the market. The cooler is solidly constructed with no bent fins and it comes with all the necessary parts for installation in all modern intel and amd processors at the time of writing. Installation was a breeze however you do have to remove your motherboard from the case unless you have a removable mobo tray or a large enough cut out hole in the back of your case, which the FT02 does not. This to me was not a big deal considering the exceptional functionality of this cooler. The cooler fans are very quiet and still push a lot of air. I was able to maintain temps around 28-32 degrees Celsius with my i5 dual core cpu depending on room temperature.
If any of you own a Silverstone FT02 case, I can tell you that this cpu cooler will fit this case. For motherboard compatibility, check noctua's website. - Liquid Cooling - Heatsink - Cooling - Cpu Coolers'

Creativity For Kids - papercrafts, craft kits
I gave Awesome Origami to my art loving nine year old niece for Christmas. Eight months later, she is still regularly making origami from the ideas in the instruction book. She loves creating personalized pieces(she made me a dog that looks just like my dog)and giving them as gifts to friends and family. For her birthday I restocked her origami paper supply with Origami Paper Bright 6" 49 Sheets so she could continue her art. Creativity for Kids makes fabulous products that really do engage the creative spirit of children. Creativity for Kids Awesome Origami
Even though my granddaughter is only six, she loved this kit. She is very good with her hands and I was able to show her how to do some of the designs. Some adult supervision is needed with children of this age, but the kit is flexible enough with all its little decorations and feathers that children can use their imagination to make their own creations without having to follow the rules step by step.
As with most Oragami kits, you have to wonder why a small pile of tiny paper, a few balsa sticks, scissors, a glue stick and instructions are worth the price. My 6 year old girl was able to decipher the instructions that are step by step pictures of the folds. Good visual/3D construction skill builder. Quiet time activity.
I purchase this for my 7 year old daughter, but I enjoy just as much as she does. It is fun and we enjoy doing crafty things together. The instruction are easy to use and the paper comes in all sorts of fun designs.
I gave to my nine year old for Christmas. This was her first experience with origami and she became frustrated almost immediately. I am ordering the paperback easy origami hoping she will find the designs less difficult. - Papercrafts - Paperfolding - Creativity For Kids - Craft Kits'

Inflatable Kayaks
Picked one of these up a Academy. Was not sure what to how is was going to work. It turned out to be a great deal. I was looking for a boat alternative to use mainly for fishing. The Material is very tough and secure. The stainless steel rings make it possible to strap just about anything down. I even mounted a 34 thrust trolling motor on the back with a home made motor mount. Normal kayaking would be fine for this as well. It fits 2 people perfectly. "Party Rock Anthem" is one of the catchiest dance tunes to come along in a while. If you have heard any of LMFAO's other songs, such as "I'm in Miami", you know the members, RedFoo and SkyBlu (who also happen to be a son and grandson of Motown founder Berry Gordy) has a quirky sense of beats and lyrics. If you only heard this song, you would be highly entertained.
However, the real treat is full length music video, which is a spoof of the zombie film "28 Days Later", but instead awaking from a coma to a city infected with the `rage' virus (from the film), RedFoo and SkyBlu find the city's inhabitants infected with the need to `shuffle' ["Everyday... people... they be `shuffling'", they are warned]. It's got some great choreography and it's even got a friggin' break dancing robot! This song and video reach levels of awesome previously unknown to the music listening public. Party Rock Anthem
The singers of LMFAO are Motown royalty-they are respectively the son&grandson of its founder Barry Gordy. They keep the legacy of Motown alive with their video that's a tribute to late Motown alum Michael Jackson (Michael Jackson 25th Anniversary of Thriller(Deluxe Casebook Edition)) In the spirit of "Thriller",there are dancing zombies. "Party rock, have a good time." The song is about having a good time--and IT WORKS. It's danceable, infectious (like the "rage" virus in the video). You ARE going to have a good time! Every day I'm shuffling.

Motion Detectors - motion sensing, home security
I installed this in the front yard near the front door. There's not a tremendous amount of light, such as for security purposes, but it's good for the sole purpose of making sure you don't bump into anything. The sensor seems pretty sharp, when I drive up in my car it goes off just pulling into my driveway. The install was pretty easy, but I feel like it has kind of a clumsy look or something. It's just personal preference though. I bought this one and also the Fulcrum Products Light-It 6 LED Porch Light with Motion Sensor for the back yard. I would give each the same type of review, except that I prefer the look of the Fulcrum and the install was easier.
Update March 25: It's still working, no battery changes yet. The Fulcrum light stopped working after a couple months.
Update June 10: It's still working, no battery changes yet. I'm buying another one for the backyard to replace the Fulcrum. Mr Beams MB360 Wireless LED Spotlight with Motion Sensor and Photocell - Weatherproof - Battery Operated - 140 Lumens
Thus far product working very well. Picks up on motion fine. Throws decent light for a small area. Not meant to light up the back yard. Basically just gives you enough light to see where you are walking. Needs 3 D batteries. No idea how long they will last. Mine are outside, and the sun will bake them in the day. Pretty sure I will be going through some batteries. A good solid casing and feel to the light. For the price, a decent product.
Was easy to mount, two switches on the inside for 30 second or 2 minute operation, and then low or high light output. The light is worth purchasing. Stock up on D batteries.
Many battery-powered floodlights are merely symbolic -- you can tell they're on only if you look right at them -- but this product is different. It's bright enough to clearly illuminate an unlighted stairwell or a walk-in closet. The brightness is comparable to a big, MagLite flashlight, i.e. painful to look at and more than adequate to find a key, avoid tripping, or even read a newspaper (if that's the sort of thing you wish you could do at the bottom of a dark stairwell). This is no "night light"; it's a true floodlight.
I've experienced no problems with the light or the motion sensitivity, and overall found product a great solution to lighting the way at night -- indoor or out -- without the expense of running electricity or fumbling for the lightswitch.
I rely heavily on other reviews so I endeavor to give back.
This product works as advertised. I use it to light up a fenced in corner of my yard that I store garbage cans in. It lights things up very well, more than suitable for security. I was concerned with an LED spotlight but it exceeds my expectations. The device itself is plastic as expected, and about what I expected in weight and feel. Doesnt feel like junk but not a solid peice of machinery either. Been using for several weeks and rain has not been an issue, who knows what happens over time. Also not seen the cold temps yet but I have every reason to believe there will be no issues.
Lastly the motion detecter really works...as soon as I approach the corner it pops on.
I will buy more of these....
I ordered several of these a couple of years ago, and they have performed flawlessly. Absolutely everything one could ask for in a battery-operated security light. So -- what's the problem? They cannot survive a seven foot fall onto a concrete floor. My bad. Knocked off a shelf where it had been sitting and broke the plastic housing (which maintains the battery contacts), rendering it ineffective. Recommendation: Buy them, BUT DON'T DROP THEM onto a hard surface. The only "flaw" is that they're not idiot-proof.
I bought and installed one of these for my mother-in-law. She needed some light at the front door (whenever the porch light is off) to aid with getting her key in the lock. It works great. The light is very bright for a small LED and the motion and photo cell sensors work great. It was easy to to install. It does seem a little light-weight and I would not recommend installing it where it would be directly exposed to rain/snow etc as it doesn't seem like it would hold up very well. - Motion Sensing - Motion Detectors - Motion-activate - Home Security'

Office Humor - fun, desk accessories
I bought the blue version of this item as a gift for my dad. When it arrived I was very surprised by the sturdy construction and overall quality of the product. The material is very smooth and doesn't show any seam lines so it looks very nice, it is a neat rubbery feeling material, not a hard cheap feeling plastic. The magnet with which you pull the paper clips from the toilet container is very strong (I kind of thought it would be weak for some reason). My dad absolutely loved the gift, it is definitely unique and great for anyone wanting to add a little conversation piece to their desk :) It's a great size and holds plenty of paper clips and pens, and it's a really interesting way to keep all of your commonly used desk supplies organized! CSB Commodities The Butt Station Desk Accessory Holder, Blue
Great gift. No, fantastic gift! All my co-workers are stopping by and asking where did I get it. It used to be my neighbor, the next cubicle who they love to say hello. All she has is a jar of candies on top of her desk - no fair. But now I got this butt station. They don't ignore me now like I stink or something. Who says tape dispenser can't be fun?
The butt station is made of quality thick plastic. Not the hard type but somewhat flexible. It is made up of 2 parts: The sitting figure which is the tape dispenser, and the toilet bowl for paper clips and a pen. The tape dispenser is surprisingly useful. I thought it will be just a novelty item that will sit on my desk as a mere decoration. It has a good grip, the cutter is on its feet and provide easy cutting for portions of tapes. Replacing a roll is also as easy as replacing a roll of toilet paper. Its butt is magnetized. No metal part is exposed yet strong enough to lift several paper clips from the bowl.
The thing that I don't like is that it is kinda light and tend to tip over. If the bowl is weighted at the base it would be perfect.
This desk accessory is hilarious and great! It's actually pretty bigger than it looks like and it's really sturdy. It comes with the tape and the clips so, a big plus there! Also, it fits almost any pen size in it's mouth (of course, not the chubby pen kind.
Great office decor!
Love the look of this item, but it's not at all practical. The weight and balance make it impossible to use the tape dispenser without holding the figure in one hand while pulling the tape...the 'mouth' is not pliant enough or properly sized to take pens/pencils of standard width...and overall the figure & potty aren't heavy enough to be stable on a desktop that's moved or jostled at all. It LOOKS very cute, and is a very amusing decoration - just don't expect functionality without frustration.
I bought it because bodily functions are amusing and I'm the resident weirdo in my cubicle world office. That said it holds up to its end of the bargain quite nicely. Functionally though I think it leaves a bit to be desired. The tape holder works as it should, no problems. The pen holder in the "tank" needs to be big enough to hold more than two pens (don't even think about putting a fat pen in there) and the the "bowl" should really be hollowed out more to hold plenty more paper clips. But, it makes me grin sitting there on my desk so I guess it does what I paid for.
I bought this has a gag gift for my boyfriend and he absolutely loved it. When I first saw this product I thought it was hilarious. It's functional and funny. I got the blue one, and the color is great.
It holds plenty of pens and paper clips and it's great with the tape as well. I am very satisfied with the product.
It gets the comments you are probably looking for. :) The tape cutter could be a little better. The little guy just sits on the "throne" and a pencil will fall out of his mount so you need like a thicker pen to stay in there. I added Resees Pieces to the "throne" for added effect :)
I purchased this item as a gift for a friend and she loves it. She uses it in her office right now and her colleagues also love it. The only problem she told me is that the tape dispenser is kind of hard to use. Other than that, it is a very cute item. - Office Humor - Office - Fun - Desk Accessories'

Sony Large Alarm Clocks - clock radio, alarm clock
My trusty old Sony alarm clock's radio selectivity was getting on my nerves, and the cheap General Electric model I chose to replace it did not measure up. Fortunately, this new Sony easily surpasses both its older brand-mate as well as the ergonomically-botched offering from GE. Advantages include precise, dial-adjustable display brightness, better radio reception and selectivity, and simple controls for sleepyheads to understand and operate. Audio is clear but undistinguished--about what one would expect from a clock radio. Nevertheless, for such a low price that is forgiveable. Sony ICF-C492 Large Display AM/FM Clock Radio
Since most of the other reviewers have been gushing over this alarm clock, I thought I'd post with a few annoyances:
- This thing has two alarms, but you can't have both of them set to buzzer. One has to be set to radio and the other to buzzer. This is aggrevating.
- Like almost every other alarm clock in existence, the button to turn off the alarm is hard to find, while the snooze button is the size of Jupiter. If you enlarge the image of the clock on this site, you'll see three buttons on the lower right below the display. The one in the MIDDLE is the one that turns off the alarm. Yeah, good luck finding that button in the dark at 6:30am. I guess the engineers who build these things don't actually USE alarm clocks, or else they wouldn't do STUPID things like this.
- Having the dimmer as a dial rather than a switch means you have much more control over brightness. However, the little indicator that lights up when you set the alarm is brigther than the time display itself. So while you may be able to get the display just right, the alarm indicator will be just a tad brighter than you want it. It's not a huge problem, but just another minor gripe.
- The snooze on mine goes off every 7 minutes when pressed. (Why 7? I have no idea.) I have lost the manual and can't verify this (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong), but I haven't found any way to reprogram this. On my older alarm clock (which, unfortunately, had no dimmer switch), I could set it to 5 minutes, or whatever I wanted.
Sad to say, but I think this is the best alarm clock I've seen so far. My search for a good alarm clock doesn't suck will go on ...
The first one we ordered gained between 30 to 45 minutes a day--we returned it and have a replacement that runs about 20 minutes ahead each day--we're about to give up and send that one back, too....It's a great looking clock for our needs--large numbers, small enough not to clog the bedside table....but it simply can't keep accurate time.
This is the fourth alarm clock I have tried in the last year, and this one is a keeper! I wanted a dual alarm that I could set very quiet since I am a light sleeper. I was shocked that two brand new alarm clocks I bought simply did not work right. I would set the alarm and it would not go off. This one works every time.
The dimmer on the display is great. I had one alarm clock that I had to drape with a cloth because it was so bright. That pretty much defeats the purpose. There's no need for a drop cloth with this clock.
The one little complaint that I have is that the dual alarm has one alarm on music and one alarm on buzzer. You can not have two different alarm settings that both play music.
This isn't as bad as I thought, though, because the alarm time is very easy to chage, yet you can't accidentally change it by bumping into it.
The radio reception is even good.
I brought this clock considering the lengendary sony trademark. But it turned out to be a complete disappointment. Its gaining hours and I am about to return in today. Well, the display is not so bright. If you are looking for a good bedside alarm clock with radio, please don't go for this one.
I'm extremely near-sighted, so I needed a clock with an extra-large display. After searching through dozens of listings, I finally settled on this one. Overall, I'm very happy with it.
First, the good:
- The adjustable dimmer dial is very nice to have, since most digital clocks have only a toggle for "Dim" and "Bright" (and "Dim" usually is still far too bright). With the dial on this clock, you can go from full brightness to near-invisibility.
- The controls to set the time are excellent; you can adjust the time fast-forward, slow-forward, and fast-reverse. So changing your alarm time from, say, 8:00AM to 7:45AM is very easy.
- The radio reception is fine for me, and the sound quality quite good for a clock-radio. The volume, of course, can be soft for a gentle wakeup, or ear-piercingly loud.
- The clock can display seconds (press and hold the SNOOZE button) if you need it.
- The green glow of the numbers seems much less harsh at night than a typical red LED.
- The numbers are fairly large.
- The clock is sturdy, with a wide base (to prevent being knocked over when you thrash at it to turn off the alarm) and good, solid-feeling controls. It feels well-built.
- The dual-alarm system works well for me - gentle radio to start with, harsh buzzer later if I still refuse to get up.
A few things I don't like so much:
- I wish the numeric display was larger - even at 1.6 inches, it's still a little too small for the very nearsighted to see without squinting. 2-inch-high numbers would have been better.
- The brightness of the individual numbers (and LED components) may vary as the numbers change. This is a bit odd, but really pretty minor.
- The controls take a bit of getting used to. And as mentioned, the "Alarm Off" button is in the middle of a panel of 3 buttons which is difficult to find by feeling, especially in the groggy morning hours. (The SNOOZE on top of the radio is very easy to hit, of course)
All in all, though, a very nice clock. - Sony Large Alarm Clocks - Alarm Clock - Sony Alarm Clock Radio - Clock Radio'

Surround Sound - sony, surround sound
Just wanted to share a few points about this product that weren't clear to me before I purchased it.
1.) The receiver does not decode Dolby True HD or Master DTS HD. HOWEVER, the receiver accepts LPCM signals. So, if your Blu-Ray player can send an LPCM signal and it has onboard decoders for those codes (and I believe they all do), then you can still experience everything Dolby True HD and Master DTS HD has to offer. If you're lost at this point, I'll put it this way. If you have a PS3 and this sound system, you're getting the full "HD" sound offered by Blu-Ray discs. Just make sure your PS3 is set to send Blu-Ray audio via LPCM, not Bitsreaming. Also, you need to connect your PS3 with HDMI to make this happen.
2.) The sound from this system is excellent. 1000 watts is plenty of power for your typical home theater. In fact, it's more watts than most home theater systems on the market currently offer. In my experience, a good rule of thumb is "more watts the better". This is true even you don't plan on cranking up the volume.
3.) The rear speakers on this system are not automatically wireless. That is, this system is CAPABLE of wirelessly transmitting to the rear speakers, but in order to do this, you need to purchase a transmitter to plug into the back of the receiver and an amplifier for the rear speakers. Sony calls this system AIR. So, in case it isn't clear, this system is only "wireless ready". I haven't purchased the transmitter and the amp needed, but installation looks like it would be very simple. It's nice to have that option in the future.
The only downside to this system, as I see it, is that the remote is overly complicated. Lots of buttons and I only seem to use about 8 of them. If my home theater had more Sony BRAVIA compenents, then maybe all of the extra buttons would be of more use. Overall, however, the bad remote is definitely not a dealbraker. The positives of this system greatly outweigh this one minor negative. Sony HT-SS370 Surround Sound Home Theater System, Black
I can't accurately express how great this product is in a few paragraphs, but I'll try. I'll start by saying that I already had a Blu-ray player (PS3), so I was looking for a surround system that was affordable and easy to set-up, actually sounded good, and felt like a quality product. After using the system for a few days I can tell you that it has more than accomplished these things.
I paid full retail price, which was $350, but again, I only needed a surround system by itself, no DVD or Blu-ray player, which is what the majority of systems seem to be these days with BD becoming more popular. That said I was willing to pay a little more if it was a good system. The system comes with a central speaker, two front speakers and two surround speakers to achieve 5.1 surround, which is plenty for an apartment like mine. There is also a very powerful subwoofer included as well, so when I have a home I can really pump the bass. Additionally, the power is 1000w.
Knowing a bit, but not a whole lot about surround sound setup, this system made it ridiculously easy for me to set it up and get going. Each speaker is color-coded for easy installation, which seems like a no-brainer but this is not always the case. So anyway, you plug the wires into each speaker and then into the receiver and plug in the subwoofer and you're done with the wiring, it's really that simple. The wires are plenty long for the two surround speakers as well, so that's not an issue. There is also an auto-calibration microphone that comes with the system that you place where you sit when you watch TV and it does its thing in less than 30 seconds and you're system is calibrated positionally just like that.
I've watched a few Blu-rays so far and the sound really is great, top-notch really. If you've never had a surround system before, you don't know what you're missing! I could never watch a movie again without it. Its a very powerful system as well, I'm waiting for my neighbors to say something soon lol (which is why there is night mode included) There are many modes you can use as well, such as Dolby Pro Logic with 5.1 support, sports, games, music etc... Sports gives you a reverberating sound as if you were at the stadium listening to the announcer, pretty cool minor stuff.
Now, there are also 3 HDMI inputs included, which is partly why this system is a little pricier than others, but it is well worth it. So I have my PS3 and DVR hooked into the receiver with one to spare. It's nice to just switch the receiver to which one I want rather than the tv, I basically don't need my tv remote anymore. I know there is no ipod dock included, but you can buy an $8 cable (red and white tips) and play it through that, so it's not really worth the $100+ Sony DMP dealy.
So there you have it, a great system for the price from Sony, who comes through in the clutch once again. Ignore the reviews that say they thought this had a Blu-ray player with it, I am not reviewing Amazon, rather I am reviewing this product.
Pros: 3 HDMI inputs, great sound, sleek and compact, easy set-up, auto-calibration.
Cons: a tad pricy but the quality is there
If you don't need a blu-ray player and you don't want to deal with annoyingly complicated set-up, this is the system you want.
I bought this system yesterday. It has great, even sound and multiple sound fields for different situations (movies, games, sports, etc). I like that the speakers are small (the center channel speaker) disappears in front of my television. Also, there are 3 HDMI inputs for everything I need (Blu-Ray player, Computer, etc) and one output for the television. There are also inputs for analog and digital audio sources. One drawback is that the 'wireless' rear speakers are only wireless when coupled with the optional AIR EZW-T100 Wireless transmitter and the Wireless amplifier for the speakers (WAHT-SA10). This wasn't a problem until I found that the amplifier doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Even the SonyStyle store shows 'out of stock'. Aside from that, this is a great-looking and sounding system for a reasonable price. As long as you don't demand wireless rear speakers in the immediate future, I highly recommend it. - Sony Home Theater - Home Theater - Surround Sound - Sony'

Wirebound Notebooks
I have to have this exact notebook for school. It is big enough for me to glue standard paper into. Easy to tear out. Only problem is it takes up a lot of room in my binder. You can get it less expensive too. Five Star Wirebound 5-Subject 8-Pocket Notebook, College Ruled, 11X8-1/2, 200 Sheets (MEA06208)
I am a college student and I really enjoy using these five subject notebooks along with a binder or folder for handouts.I try to buy a different color notebook for each semester!! This notebook is wonderful, because I can keep all my notes together in one compact notebook. Also, I find that the Five Star notebooks have very high quality paper. It's a thick nice piece of paper that is especially enjoyable to write on. It's not flimy and it is a very nice shade of paper. The pages can also be torn from the notebook along peferated lines. This is helpful when you want to hand something in. Overall, I highly recommend this notebook. It is great.'

Flip Ultra Hd - kodak, pocket camera
Check out my sample footage video on Youtube. On Youtube search "djeror zi8 low light"
In my previous review of the Kodak Zi8 I was pretty frustrated at the fact that whenever I used the built in microphone the recorded videos had an annoying high pitch whine that made the audio from my videos almost unusable. Kodak recognized that this was an issue and created a firmware update that fixed the problem. It also fixed a few other things like the previous issue of the image getting darker as you zoomed in. They seem to have fixed all of the major problems with this firmware fix.
I do tech product reviews so I need the following things:
- External mic input - most of my videos are shot wearing a lapel mic
- Macro mode - I have to get close to little tiny screens
- SDHC memory - I go to all day trade shows, I need 10+ hours of video
- Power options - I need to be able to shoot while AC power is plugged in or use a large external battery.
- Under $200 - I'm poor.
Because of these requirements no other camcorder can fit my needs. One cool thing about this camera is that it is much more upgradable than the other pocket cameras on the market.
Con:
-The built in microphone is OK now that they fixed the whining noise, but it's still not amazing.
Work-around:
- Don't use the internal mic... I use an Audio Technica lapel mic for 1 person interviews.Audio Technica ATR-3350 Lavalier Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone For events I ordered a Sony stereo mic to use instead of the built in mic. Sony ECM-DS70P Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone . Although I wish that Kodak made the internal mic better, for the most part I am kind of excited that the Sony stereo mic will give me much better sound than any of the standard internal mics that any of the pocket cams have.
Con:
-Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) sucks a lot of juice. Also the Zi8 uses a proprietary battery rather than cheap swappable AA's. Battery life when shooting non-stop is 1hr 16min in 720p 60fps with EIS on. If you turn off EIS you get about 1hr 41min at 720p 60fps.
Work-around:
- Use the USB to power cable that comes with the camera in conjunction with an external battery source. This is a must if you are going to be recording for more than an hour with EIS, cause that's about what the internal battery will give you. Tekkeon TekCharge Rechargeable Li-Poly Battery You can just stick this battery pack in your pocket and connect the charging cable to the Zi8. This will allow you to record for a super long amount of time. I haven't tested to see what my total record time with the battery pack will be but it should be around 5X the standard recording time. (about 6 hours with EIS on, almost 9 with it off) This gives you the best battery life of almost any camcorder. Sure it's an extra cost, but when you're at an all day trade show you don't have to worry about running out of juice.
Con:
- Image stabilization can't rescue video you shoot while moving around. Any camera motion makes video awful.
Work-round:
- Accept the fact you should probably be using a mini tripod with this camera or at least stand still. Also, although it takes a bunch of time to process if you have the new iMovie the image stabilization processing you can do is light years beyond what the EIS in the Kodak Zi8 can do.
One more important note. Make sure you buy high speed SDHC memory cards for this thing. If your SD card is not fast enough the camera will record for like 2 seconds and then stop with an error. It took me a while to figure out why the camera kept stopping recording when in HD mode but worked fine in SD mode. It was because of my old SD card. You need to make sure your SD card has a write speed of at least 9MB/s if you want to record in 1080p. These high speed cards cost more, but you need them for any camcorder that is going to record HD video to them, it's not just the Zi8. I think most Class 6 high speed SDHC cards should work.
If you want to get the most out of this camera plan on spending an extra $100 - $150 in order to buy upgrade items. Personally I've come to the conclusion that the extra expenses were worth it. It all depends on what you plan on using the camera for. For a typical mom purse cam this would not be my recommendation, I would say go with a Flip Ultra HD. But for someone with particular needs like mine this camera may be the only one that fits the bill. Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera (Aqua)
I rarely will type/review products but I've been a little frustrated reading the reviews of this product on Amazon and by users at other sites. Many users seem to think that this camera was designed to compete with expensive, professional cameras that cost thousands of dollars and produce full HD quality video. That's not what this is. Also, while my camera hasn't had the 'noise' issue from the Mic, i have seen a camera that had the issue and its BARELY noticeable. Its almost like a very quiet background noise from a Florescent light or something.
Kodak has designed, marketed, and built a camera to compete with FLiP and has clearly produced a FAR better product.
I'll keep it short and sweet and first explain who I am and what I am using this camera for. I use it for:
-Home Videos/Fun stuff with old buddies and friends
-For work when I need some quick video that's easy to upload online, or put in iMovie and edit
-For work when I need more complex videos that may require editing, or somewhat lengthy video but I want the ease of use/portability.
I have seen some of the problems stated with the internal Mic and I have had none of them (I do have the upgraded Firmware that is now standard 1.03, and Kodak says this completely eliminates the issue...again have never had the issue on my camera). A relative of mine was lucky enough to purchase this product when Kodak did an 'early' release a few months ago and occasionally his videos will have a bit of a higher pitched background noise, but it doesn't interfere with the sound from the video -- its just a light background noise that, honestly, i've heard on dozens of cameras. Don't forget, without an external Mic the camera only records mono so -- the sounds quality isn't going to be great anyway!
The video is great, image stability isn't as advanced as those available on more expensive cameras but it is better than anything i've seen in a FLiP or other Kodak model. It does work and you can see a difference, even if its not huge. Its SO easy to flip between video modes. The 1080p is awesome, but sometimes its nice to move back down to 720 and the 60fps to capture 'action' footage.
One negative -- which most people may see as a positive -- i do wish there were more settings, or at least the ability to play around with more features/edit modes. Its GREAT easy to use, its a point and shoot video camera -- but with the great lens and abilities, it seems like Kodak could have -- pretty easily -- had this camera competing with much higher end cameras. If all the hardware was put to great use this could compete with $500+ cameras. But I understand wanting to keep it simple.
I like having the SD card. Some people would prefer the internal memory, and yes by the time you buy a decent sized SD card the camera is more expensive than the FLiP, but, the FLiP has a very limited memory. This camera is limited only by the size of the card...Definitely a positive!
Finally, I know people that are both in the TV business and do a lot of Video blogging and they are drooling over this camera because of the external mic capabilities. One reason lots of 'pros' didn't like FLiP was because of the audio issues. Kodak has solved those, not to mention providing better quality video.
Again this isn't something to shoot with if your a young film-maker or a die-hard amateur cinematographer. But if you need something cheap to get some great quality video, or need something super easy to use that is really portable....Take the plunge. And if your considering FLiP -- don't bother... - Pocket Camera - Camcorder - Hd Camcorder - Kodak'
