Character Study - sexy, romance

In the 1970s women almost eliminated the double-standard on immoral sex. Before then, people who wouldn't blink at promiscuous men scorned promiscuous women. With the 1980s came AIDS, and now unwanted pregnancy was no longer the biggest worry for the fast-lane crowd. CASUAL SEX tells the story of two single ladies in the fast lane with an eye on the exit ramp. It bounces between corny and funny, with most of the latter due to a stand-out performance by comedian Andrew Dice Clay. In addition to Clay, CASUAL SEX proves worthwhile for the short-lived relationship Lea Thompson has with whom she thinks is the man of her dreams. Romance does not turn out the way we fantasize it to be. Casual Sex?

This movie is funny, romantic, silly, intelligent.Too bad the title is so wrong for it as this movie is not about casual sex but the desire for a real relationship. Andrew Dice CLay is wonderful as the "Vin Man" who is really a loving man who just wants to meet the right woman. Hollywood overlooked Andrew Dice Clay's perfect performance & still has not put him in another excellent role that fit him so well & at this point his looks aren't what they were in this 1987 romantic comedy. Victoria Jackson & Lea Thompson are just right in their roles as love-seeking women in the latter 1980's of safe sex- not just to avoid STDS such as the Aids disease but to also avoid getting emotionally involved with the wrong guy- and to avoid getting hurt yet again. This is an excellent comedy on dvd although it has NO extra features so maybe in the future there will be a Special edition as this is already it's 2nd time on dvd.

This movie makes me laugh everytime I watch it! Lea and Victoria have not been in any movies recently, but this movie will make you wish they were! If you are looking for a smile, good laugh, and romance---this is the movie you want to see! Every guy in the film reminds you of a guy you have met before; and every conversation in the film reminds you of one you have had with your friends before as well! As a DVD, it rates OK because there is no behind the scences information, etc. I wish there was because every so often it appears as if they cut out a small bit of a scene---and I am the type who want to know what it was! I rate this movie as an excellent one to see with your friends---it will bring up memories you will die laughing about!

Well, I have to start out by saying I'm a man so usually I dont dig on these movies. But I heard The DiceMan was going to be in it so I figured i would give it a shot. It turns out I love this movie. It's Funny, It's Touching, and It still seems fairly relevent to the times now. Rent it,Buy it,Just dont miss it.

i first watched this film back in college when it first came out and loved it then. Even now i have the dvd and yes, its dated, but so what? it's still a fun nice little film that raises a smile. Lea Thompson is believable and honest in a light yet human comedy so if you're looking for 90 mins or so of escapism then give it a view! You won't be disappointed!

Stacy Hunter and Melissa Halpern are best friends that share a common problem: sex. Stacy is a fun, flirtacious, woman who is regretting her reckless sexual past. Melissa is a nice, down-to-earth Kindergarten teacher who has only slept with two men in her life, and wants "a nice guy".

Suggesting a vacation, the girls jet off to Oasis Health Spa, to look for healthy young men. There they meet Vinny,(Andrew Dice Clay) who automaticly sets his sights on Stacy. However, Stacy has her sights set on Nick (Stephen Shellen), a musician who works at the spa. Melissa also has her eye on someone, a therapist, Matthew (Peter Dvorsky). Melissa is not aware, however, that Jamie (Jerry Levine), a nutritionist, has a very big crush on her.

Mary Gross (Ilene), Valeri Breiman (Megan), David Sargent (Frankie), and others wind up this ensemble cast for one of the funnies comedies ever to be released. I am not a big fan of the "Dice Man", but this is probably the best acting he's ever done, and possibly the best film he's ever made. You won't be disppointed.

The movie, which stars Victoria Jackson (Melissa) and Lea Thompson (Stacey), involves the two twenty-something year old bachlorettes going on vacation at a health resort in hopes of meeting Mr. Right. Each woman has a different story, with Melissa being slightly repressed and only having slept with 2 guys in her life, and Stacey being a formerly promiscuous girl who is trying to change her lifestyle.

Because of its title, the picture on the box cover, the obscure description on the back of the box, and the inclusion of the infamous Andrew Dice Clay, you might expect this movie to be filled with formulaic sexual hi-jinks and crude humor. Furthermore, because of the time period in which the movie was released, you might also expect it to be somewhat dated.

This movie turns out to be quite a nice suprise, dealing with some issues that are contemporary (such as AIDS) and some that are timeless (such as rushing into committments) in a fairly tactful way. Aside from some brief nudity, the movie, I think is appropriate and informative for teenagers who are about to venture out into the dating world.

Thompson's character is especially interesting in that she is afraid of the AIDS-risk that comes with casual sex and, accordingly, wants a long term relationship. But, due to her apprehensions, she rushes headfirst into a committment with a guy who turns out to be a very handsome, but unrealistic slacker. She takes a step toward maturity and shows strength in breaking the committment before it goes too far. Jackson's character is less interesting.

In sum, I would not recommend this movie as a romantic comedy, and its definitely not a Spring Break flick. The acting isn't that great either. However, if you have a teenage daughter, I think the film is a highly approriate and didactic story about the complexities involved with being single. - Robin Tunney - Sexy - Romance - Erotica'

Value Pack - alkaline, ultralast

I'd give these a zero rating if I could. I thought they would be a good value, but they only have about 25% (or less) the power of a good name brand battery. I tried these in my pager and they only last about a week vs. 4-6 weeks for a good battery. I used them in a label maker and I could only print 4 labels before they died. I'm half way done with a 100 pack and they all have the same short life. NABC UltraLast ULA100AAB AA Size General Purpose Battery - Alkaline - 1.5V DC General Purpose Battery-100 count

I bought 100 of these batteries a year ago. They have been fine for radios, remote controls and other undemanding gadgets. I don't know if it's the humidity or the nature of the batteries, but some have now started to leak. I've thrown away about 20 and have the same number left.

If these batteries suit your purposes, I would suggest buying a smaller pack and using them quickly, rather than hoarding a large number as I did.

For the money you can't beat it. With four kids I go through batteries by the case and have often had issues with generic brands. These batteries were better than other generics I have tried at a discount to the name brands. Recommended.

Bought some of these at Micro Center. Absolute worst batteries I've ever purchased. More than half were dead out of the box. Not even good for remotes. Had to cycle through batteries in search of two good ones just to get a channel change. In no way is the price worth the stress or the number of batteries that actually worked. Winning combinations usually lasted a week anyway. An 8 pack of Duracell would beat these. Awful experience.

After reading all the reviews on these batteries and seeing that they were pretty hit and miss, I decided to follow in the footsteps of another reviewer and do some testing. I ordered a 100 pack of AA Ultralast alkaline batteries and found the best deal I could find on some name brand batteries. I ended up finding a 36 pack of Energizer AAs at Home Depot for $14 which made them 42 cents each after tax. These Ultralasts came in a 23 cents each after free shipping and no tax. I pulled out my trusty multimeter once they arrived and went to town. I tested 10 of the Energizers (28% of the package quantity) and they all metered at 1.61 volts right out of the package. The Ultralasts are packaged as 10 shrink wrapped packs of 10. So, I poked the sharp ends of the multimeter probes thru the plastic shrink wrap to test 4 out of each pack of 10 (40% of the total package quantity). I did this so that if they tested out low, I could return them with less likelyhood of any issues of acceptance. So, of the 40 batteries that I tested, most of them metered at 1.62 volts with a handful metering at 1.63 volts; better than the Energizers! I have no way of testing milliamp hours (mAh) so have no way to determine if the overall capacity is equal but from the reading up I did on alkaline batteries, the concensus seems to be that the TYPE of battery is going to have pretty much the same capacity regardless of manufacturer. (I Googled "all alkaline batteries the same" and read some of the various resulting articles/blogs/etc) Obviously an alkaline battery is going to have more capacity than a carbon battery and a lithium ion battery will have more than an alkaline but there are only so many mAh that any manufacturer can cram into a single AA battery. It sounds like some buyers may have gotten a bad batch but I think they're worth ordering. Test a few and if you get a bad batch, return them.

There should be some kind of law against selling items this poor in quality. Shame on Amazon for peddling these batteries.

These

1) Leak - and damage to the electronics far exceed the cost of these batteries.

2) Have short life

3) High self discharge - so they are no good after a year on the shelf.

I hope FTC or some other body takes a good look at this "stuff" and penalizes both the seller and the manufacturer.

I bought these thinking they are the same as the Sam's/Walmart store brand bulk pack. They are not. About half the batteries are bad out of the pack.

They foreshadow their lack of quality control with an insert that says if any of these batteries are bad, please send them to ____ for a replacement. I really do not want to send a 20¢ (or any number of them) back for a replacement. I just want the battery to work.

BTW, I have not check the expected life. As I am only putting them in electronics that get infrequent use (kid's pencil sharpener) or have minimal power demands (remote controls).

Based off my purchase, I believe there is a serious issue regarding quality with this product. Some batteries simply didn't work at all and others had very little energy. I regret the purchase and do not plan on buying from again. - Alkaline - Ultralast - Aa Batteries - Cheap'

Otterbox Defender - protection, iphone case

This is a great case. This is the second one i have ordered (just like the yellow accent). Very rugged. You can rest easy handling your investment as long as it's in this thing. I have dropped mine onto asphalt too many times to count, and no problems with the phone at all. I must admit, when I first got the iphone into the case, I noticed that the screen protector adheres to the face of the iphone giving it an oily appearance. This is the most common complaint about this particular case, but I have found the fix for this. Baby powder. I know this sounds crazy, but it works flawlessly. There is a really good video on youtube on how to apply it. This completely fixes the problem. Because of this little fix, I now give this product 5 stars. Contrary to some reportings, this case IS NOT waterproof. However, It does a darn good job protecting it from splashes, light rain, dust, etc. If you are looking for extreme protection, look no further.

How to Applying Baby Powder [...] OtterBox Defender Case for iPhone 3G, 3GS (Black)[Retail Packaging]

I am not usually one to leave review comments... but I certainly read a BUNCH of reviews on cases for my iPhone 3G. THANK YOU to all those who wrote reviews and helped me pick the Otterbox Defender case! This case is awesome. VERY durable, all functions are accessible... and yes, the oil slicking effect is sometimes present, but easily fixed.

The ONLY issue I had when I installed the case was that immediately after I installed the case, almost 95% of all people I talked to said they heard an echo every time they spoke (you know, when you say something and a second later you hear it in your ear piece... ANNOYING!).

I was bummed because the case is built like a tank and already saved my phone from a 6' drop onto the asphalt in the rain. Though, I decided to remove the felt pieces that cover the mic and ear pieces since they are only there to prevent possible drops of water hitting those phone components directly. Once I removed those pieces, not one person complains of hearing the echo anymore! Strange, but it worked... so I wanted to pass it on.

The echo was the ONLY issue I had with this case... it's the best case I could find and WELL worth the money. I recommend it to everyone I see with an iPhone now :-)

I made this review after reading the (very few) negative reviews of this product. The negative reviews were so off the mark, it irritated me. You buy this case if you want the best protection available. I cook for a living, so this case is suspect to all sorts of grease, grime, dirt, water splashes, impacts, you name it. The case is dust proof, water resistant, and you can still use all the phone functions. You shouldn't go swimming with this case, but you should be fine if you happen to fall in the water briefly.

If you want protection, you get this case. I spent at least 12 hours researching cases to protect my investment, and this is the best available. Even my AT&T rep backed this up. Yeah its bulky, but not extremely so. And its not SUPER stylish, but I like the way it looks, and the way I carry it, in my pocket screen facing my leg, I think a blow would possibly break my femur before it broke this case. I may exaggerate a little, but I have (accidentally) tested this case harder than I wanted too, and I can't even tell I did so.

Long story short, if you want the most pretty, flashy case, don't get this. But if you want the most bullet-proof case on the market, BUY IT!!!

P.S. I'm not getting paid for this, but I wish I was!! Just a normal guy wondering why his superb product got even one 3 star review.

I purchased the OtterBox Defender Case for my 3GS, then purchased one for my friend's 3GS after having such exceptional experience with it.

He is a paramedic / fireman and unintentionally abuses his phones because they sit on his hip and he moves around a lot against huge pieces of metal. The night I brought the OtterBox case to him at the station he was getting out of the back of their new (very high up) ambulance and the iPhone fell from the holster (he had it horizontal and it caught on the door on his way out). It fell over 6' onto a concrete floor and was absolutely perfect.

Though I hadn't dropped my phone in the case up to that point when I saw the fall his phone took I knew I picked the right case. I haven't experienced any of the issues with tunneling or echo, but I tend to use the headphones or my Jawbone for calls. The only negative I've found, and it isn't really a negative but you must use OEM cables that have rounded edges because generic square edged cables will not fit into the charging area of the case.

*** For the Oil Slick Issue ***

- You'll need a can of air, a lint free cloth (face cloth or sock), a screen protector (optional), and some baby powder.

- Take your OtterBox case out of the packaging and put around a teaspoon worth of baby powder (or talc) onto the inside of the window of the hard part of the case, this seems very odd but trust me it works.

- Swish the baby powder around until it coats the entire window of the front of the case. It should look dusted white.

- Dump off the excess.

- Use the can of air to blow out as much as you can.

- Finally, use the cloth to wipe everything clean.

- When you're done it will look like you didn't do anything. You may have a wee bit of residual baby powder here and there inside the case but don't worry about it.

Once you're done wiping the case off clean your phone front and back to get it nice and smooth and put the screen protector on, this is a nice additional layer of protection but it isn't necessary.

Now put the phone in the case.

Once you seal it all up you'll see that there is no oil slick effect and no powder residue.

Works perfectly every time. - Iphone Case - Iphone 3g Case - Iphone - Protection'

Postal Digital Scale - shipping scale, postal

I have been very pleased with the few times I have used this scale so far. I had a package weighed at the post office to check its accuracy and was pleased too. The scale weighed that package .2 of an ounce heavier than the post office. This was less than a 3% difference and if it was going to be off one way or the other this is the direction that I would prefer, so that I don't wind up having something sent back for underpayment of postage. USPS PS-105 5 lb. Desk Top Postal Scale

I bought this mainly to weigh items that I sell on Ebay. I loved it while it lasted, but after about 6 months of very light use, it crapped out on me. If it were still working I would have given it 4 stars since it is simple to use, easy to store and the display is large. However, for the price I paid, I expected more.

I take good care of all my stuff, including this, didn't overuse it, never dropped it, but 2 months before its first birthday,it is malfunctioning. It is under warranty, but I'd rather have the 10# scale, so I won't send it in. It is easy to use. I love Amazon though! Where do I review Amazon?! It is so great to go back & have a receipt for what I've bought for the last few yrs!Love the navigation through the website. Here I go again- I'm supposed to be reviewing this scale! - Shipping - Postal Scales - Shipping Scale - Postal'

Swiss Quartz

I was looking for a black watch with a black dial and orange markers. This one fit the bill and the price was right. This is my first Stuhrling watch, and I must say I was impressed with the quality. It really is stunning. It seems to be on par with much more expensive watches. The dial is quite large. It fits my large wrist nicely, but may be too big for someone with small wrists. I would recommend this watch. Stuhrling Original Men's 219B.335657 Sportsmans Concorso DItalino Swiss-Quartz Black Watch'

Beginners Guide - strength training, beginners guide

If you are starting out, this book will give you the basics (as the name implies); the excercises are very well explained and the fundamental facts of weight training are here. However, if your goal is to obtain body mass and really define your body, and I'm NOT talking about going overboard or looking to win a body building contest or anything of that sort but simply looking good, then I would look elsewhere. This book is for the VERY beginners or for people who want to excercise without really "building", and just want to be fit and have a light but useful workout. Weight Training For Dummies

but I really needed the next level. Don't get me wrong, it's a great book and is loaded with information. Unfortunately, the first third of the book was basic, like "this is a weight" and "these are barbells." The last third didn't really involve weight training at all, but talked about yoga and Pilates.

The sections that covered actual weight training and exercise routines was very good, but not as in-depth as I would have liked. It seems to me that "Fitness for Dummies" should have covered the stretching and yoga. I would have liked to seen more on just weight training.

But, if you've never - and I do mean never - been exposed to weight training, then this book is for you.

This book explains the basics of weight training in enough depth to be useful, without assuming that everyone who starts lifting weights wants to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. The book goes into good detail about an assortment of excercises for different parts of the body, as well as things to watch out for with each excersize, and has a good chapter on designing your own program. The pictures are of real people, not bulked up steroid cases, and the writing style is fun to read.

I think that a lot of people reviewing this book forget that it is intended primarily for beginners, and not the experts. Therefore criticising it for "simplicity" is a bit like criticising Shakespeare for being "complicated". I have been a gym member at various times over the past 20 years, but I don't seem to have ever learned the real basics, so the straightforward advice in this book is really exactly what I need. There is a LOT of information - anatomy, equipment, do's and dont's, exercises .. I used it to set up my home workout with dumbbells and it was invaluable for helping me to do that safely. It was also a good source of reference, in that the authors suggest other books and websites that are helpful in moving on with using weights, and that is, I feel, a very unselfish attitude on their part.

I liked very much that all of the exercises are very fully explained, together with easier versions and harder versions, so that it's possible to build on a workout and make it better and harder as one grows in strength and ability.

If you are an expert weight lifter, and don't need advice, then don't buy this book! But if you are struggling to know which exercise works shoulders, which one works abs, which one works glutes or hamstrings, then it's a great investment.

I read no less than 3 books when I start a new endeavor. For weight training (a year ago) I started with 6. After working out for a year I think this book is everything you need to get started and continue to improve. The other 5 books I bought sit unused a year later, this one I still refer to and read. It's well written, easy to read, entertaining and wonderfully organized. I like most how it tells you everything you need to know but does it efficiently. The authors didn't just write for fun.One thing I didn't agree with is that a home multi-gym should cost $1000 or more (which is what the book says). I bought mine for $300 and I don't think I'll ever need another one. There are quality home weight machines available for $400 and less EVERYWHERE.

At most times this book is a clear and valuable guide for the novice weightlifter. But there are others when it bogs down in condescending simplicity and reveals the petty contentiousness of the co-authors.They explain that free weights are not the gift of philanthropists and that dumbbells can come in many configurations and materials. They give two examples -- shiny chrome and gray steel. Ok ladies, I think I'm getting it now.Co-authors Liz and Suzanne are not the patient sort and it doesn't take much for others at their gym to get under their muscular skin. In an anecdotal chapter on gym etiquette, they advise to share equipment with others, a common and expected courtesy. But they tell us that Liz physically removed a woman from a bench who refused to share with another member, an uncommon and hostile act that they present as humor. I don't get it. They also advise that if you find gum in the fountain, remove it yourself and if winded and taking awhile at a crowded fountain, take a drink and go to the back of the line. They offer no advice if you're lingering on the gym's toilet. There is at least one significant error in editing. In one chapter they provide a list of exercises they'll cover, but fail to provide any information whatever on the last exercise. How did I feel after buying the book and reading this kind of material? Like a dummy. I'm sure you will too. But I also think you'll agree with me that there's enough worthwhile material to redeem this book and make it one of the better books of its kind. The chapters describing the exercises are where the co-authors shine. Before dealing with individual exercises, they provide simple line drawings depicting the muscles involved and explain the role these muscles play in everyday life and sports, as well as why their development is important. Each exercise description begins with cautions against performing the exercise if you suffer from certain conditions, such as back or elbow problems. The exercise descriptions are complete and easy to follow. They are accompanied by two photos, usually showing the start and finish of the exercise. A do's and don't section helps you fine tune the exercises and avoid common mistakes. Each exercise, laid out in a neat two-page spread, concludes with variations on the exercise and often alternative exercises to work essentially the same muscles. After reading this, I felt more self-assured in performing exercises I was already doing and confident in attempting new exercises. Early chapters help you choose a gym and better know your way around it, or buy equipment for the home. Later chapters bring the exercises together into a beginner's program, as well as a periodization schedule that facilitates workout changes as you grow stronger and more experienced. The book is indexed, a useful feature that's often omitted in books of this type.If it weren't for the condescension and the dreadful and insulting chapter on etiquette, this book would make for more pleasant reading. As it is, there's still plenty of useful advice from the usually lucid and knowledgeable co-authors. But here's one more bit of advice from them to mull before entering a gym or buying this book: "Don't dress like a porn star". Now what will we do with our g-strings and leather collars? - Strength Training - Beginners Guide'

Military Science Fiction - science thriller, kindle

I agree with the previous reviewer. This is great sci-fi writing. Epic storytelling that is full of action and adventure. There are also quite a few surprises along the way. The pulpy name of the novel might turn off some, but it's really not reflective of the how good the story really is. I know it was re-released a couple of years ago as "The Survivors" and that name is more accurate.

The story and plot are several notches above most writing of the period and this now one of my favorite books. They should try to make a movie out of this.... Space Prison, The Survivors (The science fiction thriller classic!)

Overall, this was a very entertaining book, and when I was finished with it, checked to see if there was a sequel (there isn't); so I would definitely recommend it. It's original title, "The Survivors", describes the book well. It follows a group of people who are stranded on an uninhabited but hostile planet. Over several generations, they have to adapt to their environment in order to survive.

The book does a great job of portraying the feelings of helplessness and despair the people feel in the beginning, and how that changes to acceptance and survival, and ultimately to confidence and mastery. The challenges are interesting and come from both the environment and from the people themselves. The challenges are varied enough that the book stays fresh throughout.

The beginning and especially the end almost feel like afterthoughts. This doesn't detract too much from the excellent middle part, but it's definitely jarring how quickly things get resolved in the end. You also definitely need to suspend your disbelief to an extent while you're reading, since some of the events are fairly incredible, e.g. the speed with which they adapt to the environment. In addition, because the story spans multiple generations, it makes it more difficult to identify with the characters.

Altogether though, none of these flaws ruins what was a very enjoyable read that left me wanting more.

Tom Godwin (1915-1980) has a strange career as a sci-fi writer. He has written only three novels and around thirty short stories. With such exiguous production he managed to deliver an outstanding tale: "The Cold Equations" (1954) and a very readable novel: "Space Prison" (1958) (aka "The Survivors").

His works are very representative of the sci-fi from the `50s: not so great character development, action centered storyline, young adult readers oriented.

Nevertheless the present book managed to have a Gnome Press edition and at least two Pyramid Books edition, a good performance for a little known author.

The story starts when war between Humans and Gerns erupted. In this context a human interstellar ship with eight thousand colonists is captured. Half of the group is stranded in a hellish planet very suitably named Ragnarok.

The four thousand Rejects has to face 1.5 gravity pull, prowlers (a deadly mixture of wolf & tiger), unicorns (massive murderous bulls), Hell Fever, rotten weather (in short term and long term) amongst other "hazards".

Their numbers soon dwindle to forty nine!

From that point on generation after generation the Rejected, steel themselves with only one aim: take revenge on the Gerns.

One special attribute of this novel is, not being centered on a character but on successive generations of them, encompassing a two hundred years span.

This is a good sample of 50's sci-fi lit.

Reviewed by Max Yofre.

I would have to rate this as "ok for kids and young teens but not really for adults." The concept is interesting and could have been developed into an interesting saga. However, I think the execution is flawed. What could have been a complex and interesting story is overly simplistic; the straightline plot proceeds from start to end with very few surprises and few branches or subplots. The ending is predictable from about page 5 on. Character development is essentially non-existent as the action proceeds through hundreds of years and multiple characters very quickly and superficially - essentially the only thing you know about the characters is their names. The story and setting are seriously cliched: good guys are completely and purely heroic and bad guys are completely and purely evil with no shades of gray on either side. As you might expect all obstacles are overcome by the heroic efforts of the good guys, some in pretty unbelievable ways (essential physical and mental traits evolve in only a few years.) To no one's suprise they triumph easily in the end. If you want a quick, simple, and easy read then this book fills the bill. If you want something a little more intresting and engaging then you should skip this one.

I read Space Prison when I was a bored 9 year old one summer. I could not put it down. This is the book that started my love of science fiction. From this book I went on to devour the EE Doc Smith Lensman series, and many more. Of course I am now 60, but I continue to love to read sci fi. In fact, I re read this book not too long ago and enjoyed it all over again. Would I call it literary ? No, but would I call it good, yes !

I barely managed to finish this book. The writing was just awful - very choppy, little characterization, chunky narrative. The plot had a lot of potential though, so I skimmed through to see where it went. This could be a really great story in the hands of a writer with skill.

This story keeps you enthralled until the very end. Each chapter moves you onward to the ending, which I cannot tell you, as you need to read this book. The author brings the characters together to a common goal as they share their terrible hardships to exist on a new/different planet. Very enjoyable

The story follows the human survivors of an alien attack over several generations, and the plot is basically man-is-strong-and-can-triumph-over-any-adversity. To that end, it portrays the surviving humans as incredibly adaptable, resourceful and determined, to an unrealistic degree. Its flag waiving for the strength of the human will and adaptability -- the reader is allowed to understand from the get go that its a foregone conclusion that these pitful survivors struggling for survival will eventually bring the aliens to their knees. The only question for the book is how we get their.

The book -- apparently written in the 1950's -- is deliberately streamlined to a degree that is not generally found in modern works. For example, we are never told what the aliens actually look like. We are never told what the "Hell Fever" that kills so many actually is, why it strikes whom it strikes, and no effort is made to explain how it could possible be so deadly. We are not told how one could have a world with only four indigenous animals. All of this is just presented simply and quickly, with only the bare minimum details important to the story. In an odd way, it is perhaps a bit easier to achieve suspension of disbelief when there is no effort to explain anything, and things are just presented as facts, forget the explanations.

If you have read other early sci-fi stories, this style will not seem unusual. If not, the lack of any detail in the science and the unrealistic portrayal of the determination, adaptability, togetherness, etc. of the survivors will strike you as a little unusual. I personally feel that the style still works, but you can judge for yourself.

Despite the deliberate limits of the book, it is tremendously well written within the narrow parameters of what it is trying to do, and trendous fun. One can't help but be carried along with the iron will and determination of the group to survive and achieve revenge. For example, after a five year old little boy's mother is killed, he is offered his teddy bear. He says something to the effect of, "I dont need it. I wont be playing anymore" which the boy says, not out of sadness or despair, but because he understands he will need to be strong to survive and make the aliens pay. Cheesy and unrealistic? Sure, but one cant help but be born along by the patriotic drumbeat marking the strength of the human resolve.

Despite its limits, I enjoyed the book greatly, and its a great buy for .99. - 50s Sci-fi - Military Science Fiction - Science Thriller - Kindle'

Kenneth Cole Belt - kenneth cole belt, kenneth cole

This belt fits all of my needs! I wear it with my dress clothes almost exclusively every day. After over 6 months of use, the belt surface still shows little/no wear and still shines like it is new. The only complaint that I have is that the leather surface is slightly separating from the backing around the edge closest to the hole I use most. This was easily fixed with a dab of super glue though! Go Kenneth Cole! Kenneth Cole REACTION Men's Waldorf 1-1/2" Reversible Leather Belt, Black/Brown, 32

After a few wearings, the belt started to separate (the black side from the brown side) in the center of my back, where there would usually be a slight dip after the belt stretched out. Instead, it kinked a little bit and started to separate.

As several other reviewers have noted, this belt separates in the middle after a couple of months. If you must replace it once every four months, might as well buy something more expensive that lasts longer.

This belt does not really have two distinctive colors, but rather black and almost black. It also has a distinctive fastening system that seems to work and to be robust as well. Finally, it seems a bit plasticized rather than seeming like leather. But it works, and is attractive enough.

What can I say, it's a belt. If you want a timeless and fashionable belt that is also sturdy, you cannot go wrong with this purchase. On one occasion, I was forced to remove my belt and use it as a connector between two heavy objects and STILL it hasnt warped, nor does it look like it will. My one complaint, it would seem that the leather was painted and not dyed as the edges are beginning to chip, but that's not an issue for me as seeing that area of the belt is impossible. If it really came down to it, I could take a sharpie marker and redo the edges.

The leather feels supple and soft. The buckle design is cool. I received compliments on the belt.

No problems to report.

Update - When I first received the belt and the first several times I wore it, I was happy with it.

But after wearing the belt several times using both sides, it has separated right in the middle between the black and the brown sides. Since it is out of the return time window, Amazon won't do anything. It is cheaply put together and comes apart easily. I have owned other reversible belts in the past, but Kenneth Cole Reaction is the only one that has separated, especially so soon in use.

The belt is really good though I cant wear it because its too small. Im going to sell it to a friend. I bought the 34 size since thats my size in american eagle jeans, you may want to at least buy one size bigger. Also the brown size is really dark so it makes it look like is black on both size if you wear it at night. If you are looking for a reversible belt you may want to look at a different option.

I bought this belt 2 months ago. The belt is great at first, but after a while the two leather pieces will begin to separate and you'll end up with two fully separated leather strips. I came here to buy a second (identical) belt thinking mine was an oddity, but seeing that other customers complain too I'll look for another model. - Excellent - Kenneth Cole Belt - Buckle - Kenneth Cole'

Roku - netflix, media player

I bought this device for my father as he is somewhat technically challenged. He kept telling me that he wanted to watch Netflix on his 52" LCD television. He was under the impression that he had to buy a Blue Ray player to achieve a high quality streaming experience. I figured it would be nice to buy a Blue Ray player since he'd have the player for all the DVD's he owns and the Netflix streaming would be gravy. After pricing the BR players I realized that if I wanted WIFI built in, I'd have to buy an off brand unit to be at a comfortable price point. Further research revealed the Roku XDS which is a fantastic piece of tech. It is extremely easy to set up. From the time you open the package to the moment you're watching a movie streaming from Netflix is around 15 minutes. You could probably even do it faster, but I was tinkering with some of the other channels that Roku has to offer.

Since WIFI connectivity was an extremely important feature, I quickly went to that screen in the setup sequence to make sure I had a good signal. Since my router is 10 feet from the Roku box my throughput is very high. I could have ran a cable to the ethernet connection but then we're talking more wires. I hate wires!!! I put in my WEP password and the box promptly started updating the firmware. In order to link your Netflix account the Roku will show you an alphanumeric code. You just go to [...]and input the code that appears on the screen. Within 15 seconds or so the Roku screen will advance and you are now fully integrated with Netflix. There is no need to do this again unless you reset the Roku back to factory settings. The same procedure is used for Pandora and other channels offered on the Roku.

There are dozens of other channels that you can add to Roku. If you have an Amazon VOD account, it integrates just as easily as the Netflix account. Then you have the ability to add Hulu + as well but I don't recommend that. The cost is $7.99/month as of this writing and since you still have to watch ads, I don't see the value. Lastly, if you're on the fence about which Roku to purchase (there are three) you should consider the top of the line model or the second tiered unit. Do not consider the cheapest model because it lacks WIFI and will not transmit in HD.

I happen to own the new generation of Apple TV (nearly same size as Roku). The reason I have the Apple unit is because of how it tightly integrates with iTunes and the iPhone 4 which I have. I can easily recommend the Roku player to anyone who wants to add a nice piece of tech to their multi-media systems. Best of luck and thanks for reading my review. Roku 2100X XDS Streaming Player 1080p

Like a lot of people who use Amazon, I own all kinds of electronic gear. Every once in a while, you get your hands on a device that really stands out in terms of ease of use and performance. When I first hooked up my Slingbox, for example, I realized that it was unique and was going to add something truly useful and impressive to my audio-video set-up. When I read a description of the Roku box, I had a similar expectation. Could it be as easy to use as advertised? Would it perform on a level that would really satisfy? Would it be one of those "stand out" devices? Now I can say in all honesty that the Roku player is everything I hoped and more. When the description says you will be up and running in just a few minutes, you can believe it. I opened the box, plugged in the power cord, attached a cable to my high speed router, and ran audio to my amp. I turned everything on and immediately saw the set-up screen for the Roku player. To run a quick test, I tried streaming a video from Netflix--it worked perfectly. This initial set-up and test took no more than 10 minutes. After several days of using the Roku, I have yet to have even the slightest problem. I have added a couple dozen channels and all work as expected. My only moment of hesitation came when I saw how small the Roku player is. It is tiny sitting there with all the other components, but when I saw what it could do, the size became inconsequential. The Roku player truly is an impressive device. While not necessarily a replacement, the Roku XDS Streaming Player is another serious alternative to cable TV. By the way, for those traveling outside the USA, where Netflix does not allow the streaming of movies on your PC, there is a way to connect the Roku player to your Slingbox. You then have access to Netflix through the Roku wherever you have an internet connection.

I have been looking for an alternative to cable/satellite for awhile. The ROKU XDS is the closest thing to it. With the support of Netflix streaming(some episodes even in HD), and with Hulu plus coming in the fall, the ROKU XDS is all my family needs. Also, if you look at the ROKU forums, developers are creating other private and premium channels. This is something that Apple.tv cannot do. They also mention on their website that with an update in November you will be able to play video off USB. Setup took only minutes and the picture in awesome on my 1080P LCD. The only draw back would be if you watch a lot of sports, currently they only have MLB.tv. As soon as Hulu Plus is added I will be dropping my $90/month satellite bill and pay $20 a month for Hulu and Netflix. - Streaming - Netflix - Wireless - Media Player'

Coleman

I've been using it on rainy days when cycling to work. It's heavy duty enough and definitely keeps me dry.

Might be nice if the hood was adjustable--the hood is fairly tight, which helps keep the water out I suppose but

I wouldn't mind adjustment there. If I ride in temps over 60F it gets hot really fast. I don't have any other suit

to compare it to so I do know if this is fair but it seems as though it could have a more effective ventilation system.

If I was rating only the construction and ability to keep dry, it would be 5 stars. Coleman PVC/Nylon Rain Suit, Black/Tan, Large

Now that I own this well-constructed rain suit. I'm a big fan of Coleman products in general, and they have definitely done this one right.

I won't go into a detailed explanation, but suffice it to say that I've tested this suit in just about the heaviest rain imaginable (short of a full-blown Hurricane or Monsoon) and I came away dry as a bone. Plus, the suit is very easy to put on and take off, which is nice.'

Computer Add-ons - keyboard skin, macbook

I ordered this product for my new Macbook Pro 13in. Wanted to protect the keyboard from dust, spills, and scratches (while adding a girlie hint of flair)! The skin fits PERFECTLY over the keyboard. Slips right over the keys and stays in place, without shifting or sliding while typing. The pink keys look adorable! I love how this particular skin only has color over the keys, not one unicolored piece (like a few other styles i've seen) So it actually looks like the keys are colored! Great product for anyone that wants to add protect their Macbook, with a little colorful flair! IVEA Pink Keyboard Silicone Cover Skin for New Aluminum Unibody Macbook Pro 13" 15" 17" - FIT ALL

I ordered this July 12th and it arrived July 15th so it was a very quick delivery.

I like the pink but it's not that great of a fit. The letters/symbols/numbers on the pad don't actually line up with the letters/symbols/numbers on the keys. The outside corners, particularly those closest to me, are turned upright a little which is somewhat annoying as I was expecting it to rest right against the keyboard. I'm going to keep fiddling with it to see if I can get it on better but it would appear as though the clear part is just a tad too big so instead of resting in the dip of the keyboard, it extends a little past it.

It's a little difficult to type. I seem to keep "missing" the keys somehow but I imagine I'll get used to it over time.

[I own a Macbook Pro 13 inch.]

Additional information: I've only had this cover on for a few days now and it would appear as though the pink is wearing off some of the keys. The spacebar has a big hole and the Shift key is beginning to develop one as well. It kind of looks junky with the pink wearing off like that since the black is shining through really clear now. =/

Not sure I like it quite as much now so I'm rating it over again.

this is a cute cover, and serves its purpose... the only thing i didnt like, was that the #s and letters that are printed on the keys, don't line up with the actual backlighted keys and some of the symbols are wrong or missing... but u can see the backlighted keys through the pink if your in the dark to figure out whats what... its cute though and does what its meant to do.

... which in my case is keeping the cat hairs off the keyboard. And it's dirt cheap. I bought it because the 2011 MBPs won't work with external monitors unless the cover is open & I didn't want to leave the keyboard unprotected when I was using the external one.

I won't leave it on while I'm typing because it adds just enough resistance to make typing uncomfortable. But the rest of the time the cat hair & cookie crumbs can fly where they want.

I was super excited about this keyboard cover, especially because it says its for the new macbook pro. I just got a 13" mac pro and was totally disappointed because it doesn't fit at all. I've been using it for a week now and its horrible. I can barely write and the letters do not match the apple keyboard letters at all. In the evening i feel i'm looking at the keyboard without wearing my classes, i.e. you get dizzy! It looks nice when you look at it but DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU HAVE MBP 13".

i must mention i did receive this product quickly, BUT i thought it was pink.... i received a BLACK key board NOT PINK.... very dissapointed... i was very excited but let down when i opened the package and saw BLACK!!

I ordered it Sunday May 22 and got it that Thursday. So I guess it shipped timely enough. I didn't expect it to be packaged like it was. It was sent in the mail and in a brown envelope. But the product itself wasn't damage so I was fine with that. It fits like a dream for a most part. The backlight thing that everyone continues to mention isn't bad at all. You won't get dizzy looking at the keys and if you adjust it just write you won't notice much off it. If it does bother you, you can always take the thing off and place it back on later. It's not bad. The color is cute and is as shown. It gets a little darker seeing as the keys it's placed over are black but that's common knowledge. People have asked if i specifically ordered pink keys on my macbook pro, lol. It's cute and does the job efficiently for a cheap price - Keyboard Skin - Keyboard Protector - Dust Covers - Macbook'

Micro Usb Charger

For those interested...

The output rating of the Motorola SPN5504 Battery Charger (as of April 2011, no longer directly stocked by Motorola) is 850 MA (milliamperes) at 5.1 volts. The lithium-ion battery within the Motorola Droid 2 Global cellphone, Type BP6X, is rated at 1420 mAH (milliampere-hours, typical). So, if you were to use the cellphone, discharging it down to the 5 percent level (as indicated on the "Battery Management" screen of the cellphone), the time it would take to recharge the phone to 100 percent (fully charged state) would nominally be 95 minutes, calculated as follows:

Recharge time = (Percent_discharged x Battery_capacity) / battery_charger rate, i.e., (0.95 x 1420) / 850 = 1.587 hours or 95 minutes.

Similarly, charging rates for given percent battery discharges are:

90% - 90 minutes

80% - 80 minutes

70% - 70 minutes

60% - 60 minutes

50% - 50 minutes

The above are "nominal" charging times. If the battery has a different capacity or the battery charger has a different rating, then the charge times will differ accordingly. If the battery charger cannot provide 850 milliamperes output (i.e., the nominal rating is less than 850 ma - as may be the case with a "cheap" battery charger), then it will lake commensurately longer for the battery to be fully charged. (For example, if the battery charger has an output of only 650 ma, the time to fully charge the 1420 mAH battery in the cellphone from a 95% discharged state would be 124 minutes - significantly longer.)

I actually tested the above, using my almost new (3 weeks old) Motorola Droid 2 Global phone with the OEM Motorola battery BP6X (provided with the cellphone) and the accompanying OEM Motorola Battery Charger SPN5328B (marked output rating: 850 mAH at 5.1 volts). The cellphone was discharged to the 5% point, at which time the Battery Charger was connected to the phone. The actual charge time to reach the 100% fully charged state was 94 minutes.

Hope this helps! Motorola SPN5504/SKN5004A micro-USB Home and Travel Charger

I bought three of these as I need one every place I go. This item is identical to the one that came with my Droid X, down to the part number and labels. I'm very happy with it. Now if I could only find a battery that lasts more than 1 hour, all would be perfect. Cost was 1/5 th of retail.

I ordered this for my HTC Evo 4G because I like to have one for the office and one for home and the EVO 4g will consume a lot of battery if you like to have WIFI or GPS enabled for extended periods of time. The price was right and the free shipping was very fast (ordered Fri, arrived Mon). This works just like the OEM charger that came in the box. I have ordered other chargers for other phones at online auction sites, and they were more expensive, not a name brand, made cheaply, and didn't last. This is a quality product that does the job at a good price, what more can you ask?

This is the same charger/USB interface cable you get when you purchase a droid. Weather you need to replace the one that came with your droid or you want an extra charger, you can't beat the price. I'm pretty sure you'll pay about 10x the price if you were to purchase one at a store. I wish I could find more items at 90% off!'

Home Office - glues, home office

We use "Elmer's Glue Sticks" for our kid's school posters and science fair displays, as well as in our small shop to make temporary signs.

I like that it is purple when it is applied because it makes it easy to see where the glue has been applied and it does dry colorless so it doesn't show through light color paper. This is not very strong glue and it is easy to remove items that have been attached using it, so we take a stick with us if we have to transport the poster or display board to touch-up anything that might have come loose.

Overall, a good glue stick for paper and small craft projects - Recommended! Elmers PURPLE SCHOOL GLUE STICK 7 grams 30pk (E555) - Home Office - Glues'
