Audio-video Kits - pyle, audio-video kits
Bought this to connect 5 pairs of RC60i polk audio speakers (8 ohm) to our office speaker setup. 3 of our other volume controls were the Phoenix Gold VMT-100 variety that has jumpers that let you change the multiplier. This control has a metal tab that you move to adjust the 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x settings (they call it index "1, 2, 3, 4") I believe when you set it to a higher multiplier it just prevents you from setting the sound higher. i.e. instead of 12 steps of attenuation there are 10, 8, etc..
I gave this 3 stars cuz one of the volume controls had a problem with intermittent contact. One day the audio would cut out and taking the control back out of the wall I discovered that the terminal block was loose. I was sure that the set screws were tightened down on the speaker wires so that wasn't the problem. Wiggling the block would cause the sound to come and go. Perhaps bad solder contacts? Nice Looking, Frustrating Quality
I've worked with several different volume control units over the years. This one is one of the better looking, more modern looking plate and knob. The construction looks good, but I have a few complaints that will most likely deter me from ordering this model in the future.
1 - Won't take 16 Gauge Wire (18 Gauge MAX) - This can be easily fixed by clipping some copper, but lacking ability, figuring most the units I've bought in the past will take 16 Gauge wire.
2 - I purchased two of these units; one had a sticker identifying the terminal connections, while the other didn't, not even in the box. I had to reference the instructions to find the correct input and output connections. Quality control issue, and could become annoying if you ever had to move the unit and didn't keep the instructions.
3 - The connections are overly sensitive, even with the correct crimped depth, the correct gauge, and the correct amount of torch on each terminal, the simplest of movement while sliding the unit into the electrical box can cause a disconnect of sound. I find this to also be a huge quality control issue with the terminal blocks not making a solid connection despite triple checking the quality of my connection. Both units had this same problem.
The price of this unit reflects the quality of the unit. If you have patience, this unit will work fine for you and looks good, but if you're looking for a frustration free unit, look elsewhere. - Pyle - Niles - Audio-video Kits - Mount'
