Science Fiction

Loved the book, premise, phrasing, characters -- everything (almost). Couldn't wait for the second book. It's a small matter, but for someone who makes their living with the written word, I was hoping for at least a grammar check. Every single usage of the verbs lie and lay was incorrect and there were dozens, and they drove me crazy! (I take that back, it was used ONCE correctly in the second book.) For example, instead of the book lay on the table, it was written the book lied on the table or he walked into the room and lied down next to her. I would cringe and it would snap me back to reality, spoiling the story for me. There were a few other sporatic errors, such as the misuse of affect or effect or mismatched tenses. But if you're not bothered by such things, you'll be thrilled with both of the Astra books: Unusual and exciting story line and well developed characters that you actually care about.Astra: Synchronicity Astra: Synchronicity

I admit I downloaded this book because it was free and it helped that there were a couple good reviews. Truthfully, I'm shocked that more people haven't reviewed this book. The plot and action start immediately on the first page and draws you into a story of a struggle between normal humans and a slightly more 'evolved' version of humans (due to a disaster) which gets more complicated when an alien race is encountered. While there weren't a lot of social undertones, the plot is still something people can relate to in terms of struggles that people face today.

Overall, the book was incredibly fun and fast to read, it held my attention the entire time and I didn't find any wasted text that made me want to skip a couple paragraphs here or there. I downloaded the next volume in the series immediately after I finished reading Astra: Synchronicity. As for any flaws in the electronic version- I saw none, everything was clear and easy to read with no problems.

Good Sci-Fi novel. Emphasis is on plot rather than spending too much time on the technical aspects. I've already downloaded the next book in anticipation of the continuance of the story line. Well worth the free price of admission.

Good Sci-fi has been scarce lately but this book makes the wait worth while. I very much enjoyed the style, pace and detail. I wait breathlessly (OK maybe I'll breathe a little)for the next installment.

An avid sci fi fan, I was hooked from the first page. This book is the intense and action filled beginning of what would appear to be the first in a series of stories involving Magnius, Amii, Nadine, Tiyuri, Aliane and a host of others, normal and other than normal. It is not just the struggle of the characters in the book but also says much about the struggle of mankind in general and yet it holds to a belief in both fate and the divine, as such here the the two are forever intertwined and inescapable. The story is well written and each character well developed as the drama continues to unfold adventure after adventure. The future of mankind now forced to live in space is at stake along with any hope of establishing a relationship with aliens. There are plots and subplots intertwined together well enough to keep the sci-fi reader involved with ideas of what lies ahead and always with a surprise twist that you can't see coming until you realize that this is just one more of many. It could be a saga or series. The next book if written with the same clarity, intensity, and detail will be welcomed by sci-fi fans worldwide and well worth the price. I leave it to others to provide more in depth info about what happens in the book and simply say it is a fast paced and entertaining book that is far from over. I look forward to the next book and the future of the fabulous but insecure Magnius and the fascinating Amii both of whom are main characters and who leave me wondering and searching for the next book. I'm going to buy the next one immediately.

Great work Ms Eskra. Keep them coming. Your own beliefs about fate, destiny, and God may or may not be reflected in this book but as used they bind the book together well. I enjoyed it.

Downloaded this book because it was free, but i will be buying the next one. Dont usually leave reviews but with only one review thus far I wanted to.

I read a lot; 2-4 books a week. I really liked this one and I think a lot of others will too.

Overall Astra: Synchronicity is a good read. It starts out pretty slow and jumps around a lot introducing new characters. At first it was hard to keep track but at 30% the introductions are done and the pace picks up considerably. The ideas in the book are interesting and create a universe unique enough to not sound like a SyFy direct to video movie. There were only a few things that annoyed me but it didn't detract too much from the overall book:

1. Politics. East (Asia) vs. West (Europe/US) and Europe is enlightened while Americans are gun toting unfeeling capitalists. Really? If an author injects politics into a novel it is best done with nuance and not some kind of caricature. This aspect of the book was a blown opportunity to create a deeper and more unique universe.

2. First contact was imagined as not much more than a diplomatic meeting. Also for a species that was a space-faring race before humans existed their tech was not advanced, or different, enough. A race of beings tens or hundreds of thousands of years older than humans would appear to be God like.

Those two points aside I liked the book and plan to read the other two in the series.'

Ge Refrigerator Water Filter

Shipped immediately, took it out of the box, ignored all the instructions and warnings as men do, unscrewed the other one, put this one in, filled up 2 big glasses of water to "flush it" and that was it.

Maybe 5mins worth of effort?

Not sure what else to say in a review of this item, worked great in our GE fridge. GE SmartWater MWF Refrigerator Water Filter, 3-Pack

The item exactly matches with original filter. The original filter is type GWF "Smart Water Plus" for GE refrigerator type PSS26LGRB WW.

It took hardly couple of minutes to replace the filter. We have observed the new filter for the last few weeks and we have not faced any problem so far.

I received these filters GE SmartWater MWFINT. I ordered GE SmartWater MWF filters. These international filters will not work on GE refrigerators. I will contact Seneca river Trading. I think these could be counterfeits!!!!!

I did receive one genuine water filter for my refrigerator and it worked fine. But what I ordered (and what it stated on my invoice and on my order confirmation) was a "3-pack of ..."

I tried to contact the vendor, no response.

I tried to contact vendor through Amazon resolution web page, no response.

I filled out an Amazon claim, no response.

Amazon refunded my money.

So although the filter I did get was fine, the vendor needs to work on their customer service. I am satisfied with what happened, but still it would have been more fair if they had just refunded me 66.6% of the money I paid, or had sent me two more filters and not refunded me anything....

I also ordered the MWF and received a MWFINT. Wrote to Seneca River Trading and they replied that it can be substituted for the regular one. It may be, but if you read what it filters, it's a bit different from the "American" one. Not sure what to do.......

Ordered one MWF filter and received a MWFINT filter for international replacement only. I am looking into it to see if I can even use this filter. I gave one star because of the quick delivery of the item I didn't order. If the company handles this appropriately I will reconsider giving more stars and credit where it is due.'

Family Films

Disney's The Lion King is finally available on DVD. Considered the cream of the crop of all the Disney animated features by many, it is definitely worth owning. I don't think I'll go into the story, which I'm sure most of you know. Chances are you've already seen the movie and are just waiting to own it on a piece of media that won't rot like your VHS tape that probably fell apart by now. Even if Disney released a sub par release of this movie, you'd buy it. Luckily, this is one of the best releases ever.Video and Audio is supreme in this release. Especially vibrant is the 5.1 sound. Of all the older Disney releases, this one benefits the most I think, with the powerful music and sound effects present in this release. Hearing James Earl Jones as Mufasa blaring in thunderous 5.1 sound is quite amazing. Likewise the excellent music, such as the opening Circle of Life. Present in this release is the original theatrical version as well as a version with new music/song. I actually didn't care for the new song, but some may. The extras are quite numerous, contained on a second DVD and are mentioned in Amazon's product details...I haven't had the time to go through them yet, so I cannot comment on the extras. I just watched the movie again. To be honest, the movie would be worth it as a single disc release so I'm happy as it is.Some interesting trivia for some of the people who are not aware of it is that The Lion King seemed to be heavily "influenced" by an old Japanese anime, Kimba The White Lion. Those wishing to see the "similarities" would do well to check out that series as it has also been released on DVD. Carbon copying aside, I do love the Lion King. It still manages to grab you whether you are 4 years old or 40. Two thumbs up!! The Lion King (Four-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy)

After the movie Little Mermaid came out, Disney would make 3 other animated masterpieces: Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, that would change the way we looked at animated films, somthing new, something wonderful. But of all these 4 great animated films, in my opinion The Lion King was the greatest. The music was just, beautiful, and Scar was probably the most EVIL Disney villain the was ever drawn on a piece of paper. You hated him, but you almost liked him, because he was so great. But probably the best part of the movie was Simba's pal's Pumbaa and Timon, the BEST Disney characters EVER!!! The scene where Timon was doing the hula, I thought I was going to die from laughing. Anybody from toddler to 10 year old to 60 year from boy to old woman to teenager and so forth will, without a doubt, LOVE this movie, everyone.

I am a great fan and admirer of Disney animation. As a child, I would watch the movies of the new generation (starting with The Little Mermaid) religiously and enjoy the songs and characters. As an adult, I appreciate them even more for their moving storylines and deep meanings.

To preserve these movies in my collection, I re-purchased certain limited edition DVD's even though I already had all of them on VHS. The Lion King was no exception. However, I am a bit disappointed with this DVD release of the movie...

Several viewers have pointed this out before, but I was really surprised when seeing it for myself: when The Lion King was released to IMAX theatres a couple of years ago, the animators decided to "enhance" the film experience, partly because the film's dimensions would now have to accomodate a larger format screen. What started out as a few color touch-ups and brush-ups ended up being a RE-ANIMATION of some of the scenes. If you are a huge fan or serious collector of Disney memorabilia, you might be interested to know about a few of these changes.

Let's start with the opening castle logo: it used to be blue/white, and now it's black/orange. I understand Disney trying to match the color scheme of this movie, but I feel like it took away from the traditional openings that we have loved all those years!

What about the "Just Can't Wait to be King" sequence? The CROCODILES with the birds in their mouths have completely been redrawn! This may sound trivial, but I never forgot how the original crocs looked; they seemed to have a very unique flare to them and stood out. When I saw the ugly green things with the deformed noses they put in now, I was taken aback.

But that's not all...Watch the "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" sequence. In the scene where Nala and Simba are climbing down to the waterfalls, the entire background is now completely different! Everything from the waterfalls, to the rock, to the colors is re-animated.

The part where Mufasa re-appears in the clouds has been slightly altered though that's not as butchered as the other parts I just mentioned. When Simba falls down in despair and blows away the petals and moss in the wind, they fly to Rafiki. The movement and patterns of that have been re-drawn as well.

Supposedly, the Disney team thought these changes would make the IMAX experience better. And at least they promised us the original theatrical version on the DVD, so I expected to see the movie I grew up watching. Upon seeing both versions, I found out that their idea of the original theatrical is the same re-animated scenes version minus the "Morning Report" song. So basically everything that you remember about The Lion King is now gone.

I think that when a movie is released and experiences as big of a success as The Lion King did, it goes down in history and should be respectfully preserved. It's one thing to change something for a re-release and call it a "Special Edition" version, but it's another to tamper with the original film in terms of its animation and exclude the first sequences altogether. It's not so much what they changed, but the principle of the thing.

Final thought: the original 1995 film is, at the moment, unavailable. The only way you can see the actual animation is by watching your old VHS tape or laser disc. Both the Special Edition and the Theatrical are the changed versions on this DVD release. If you aren't bothered by these changes, you might enjoy having this DVD set in your collection simply because of its presentation (two discs, dust cover, collectable value). If you are a Disney perfectionist, as many people out there are, there is always a Blu-Ray version in the works that might come out sooner or later now that Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Beauty & the Beast are/have been released.'

Jump Starter - jump start

Awesome! Plenty of jump start power. Purchased 1 from Amazon & another from my local hardware store(same model). Used 4 times in the last few days on our fleet vehicles. Cars/trucks/vans...no problems. Charging is easy on this model, just plug it in with an ordinary household AC extension cord or use the DC adapter supplied. Also, this unit has an on/off switch. My old one didn't so the terminals were 'HOT' all the time. Life saver device, well worth the bucks! Stanley J309 300 Amp Jump Starter

I bought this jumper to jump my motorcycle. The battery goes dead every winter and I am not in an area where I would be able to keep the battery charged over the winter (I am forced to park the thing out on the street). Anyway, this jumper works great - I plugged it in, let it charge for a day (although I don't think it requires a full day to charge) and jumped my bike right up - the battery on my bike was completely dead prior to the jump. Very easy, no problems.

My battery wouldn't hold a charge and I used this every day for 4 months to start my car and it exceeded my expectations. I never expected it to last that long, but with charging once every 3 weeks or so it worked fine. Small, portable, and much easier than jumper cables. Highly recommended.

I use it to start my lawn mower and cars if necessary. So far, it has been working well. It is much better off for me to have this battery pack than buying a dedicated battery for my lawn mower. A great product!

I shopped eBay and major retailers, and Amazon had the lowest price for this item. I had previously read online reviews of similar products and decided that Stanley offered the best, along with a trusted brand name.

Shopping at Amazon is so easy, I do it often.

I received my Stanley Amp Jump Starter, charged it and put it to work right away. It works as it should, cars start up right up and the attached light is a great feature. Be sure you have a small extension cord to charge it or you can use the supplied car charger.

I bought this to power a laptop running a wireless air-card that is always on. I was plugging the laptop 12 volt power power supply into the 12 volt outlet of the fully charged jump starter. I was only getting about 3 to 4 hours of use and then the jump pack was drained. The small battery in the computer is lasting about 2 hours. Not very impressed. It was a nice compact unit, not to heavy, and I never did try to jump start anything.Maybe I got a bad unit; but if like me you want to power a computer, this pack didn't work well. I didn't downgrade my rating because as stated above I didn't jump start anything. I have purchased the larger Stanley unit and will review it once I have a chance to try it.

Unit works well enough but it is not a Stanley Product. All the documentaion with the unit list Baccus Global. There is no indication of the country of manufacture. I prefer bying products from the USA and many of the Stanley products list a made in USA stamp.

I recently bought this jump starter, and have found, that if the car does not start on the first few cranks, forget it, the charge is gone from the jump starter, and you have to recharge it, before you can use it again. Not too happy! - Jump Start'

Extended Battery - hp laptop battery, 12 cell

The original battery for my HP DV4 died after 16 months. I've had this product for about a week and so far so good. It fits perfectly. The battery life is about the same as the OEM battery, which is about 2-3 hours. Also, it's VERY cheap for a battery. Great investment. Definitely recommend. Laptop/notebook Battery for Hp Pavilion Dv4-1120us Dv6-1030 Dv5-1002 Dv5t-1000 Dv4 Dv4-1000 Dv4t Dv5-1004nr Dv5-1004tx Dv5-1010 Dv5-1020 Dv6-1000 Hdx16t

I searched high and low for a battery that was compatible with my 1030 and while many claimed, only this one worked! It holds life well, quickly recharges. I run my computer at high performance and it still last a while. Highly recommended!

I purchased this battery and followed the instructions, allowing it the charge for a full 10 hrs before use. Then I used it til it was completely dead, before charging again.

After doing this, I ran the "HP Battery Check" program. The program told me the battery was faulty and should be replaced. On a full charge, the battery only last for 50 mins.

I am returning this battery.

I was a little skeptic to buy a new battery for my girlfriends laptop at first...but soon enough I didn't have an option. It's a perfect fit for her HP Pavilion Dv5t, and so far seems to hold a decent charge.

Fits my DV5t great. It seems to be identical nearly to the dead battery from HP that I had before. Only problem I had was that my computer didn't recharge it after it discharged the first time. I took the battery out and cleaned the connections and it seems to be fine now.

I have a HP DV4T-1000 laptop and the original battery died after about 18 months of use. I was shopping around for an OEM battery, but they were just too expensive. Came across this non-OEM battery on Amazon and it seemed like a steal. I took a leap of faith based on the reviews here and haven't regretted the decision. It fits perfectly into my laptop and I am getting decent battery life of about 3-4 hours with WiFi always on and Bluetooth off. I generally keep the laptop on standby overnight and even then the remaining battery charge goes down by just about 20% - not bad. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now with no problems at all (fingers crossed that it lasts :)). This is excellent value for money!

This battery fits my HP DV6 laptop perfectly. The battery life has been good - 2+ hours. My original battery life wasn't a bunch better, and to replace the original battery was over $100. Good battery for the price... - Hp - 12 Cell - 6 Cell - Hp Laptop Battery'

Digital Tablets - digital tablets, bamboo

First of all, I'm not a native English speaker, sorry for you reading my broken Engrish. :)

Bamboo is Wacom's lineup for light-users.

This is the second generation of this line, which features multi-touch.

# What's in the Box

A Tablet

A Pen

Three pen-tip replacement

A pen-tip extractor

No more mouse offered. (No one uses Wacom's mouse anyway...)

# Pen

It features Wacom's typical technologies:

No battery needed, No cable, and an eraser-programed tail.

New Bamboo pen has just OK grip. Just OK.

However, if you own an Intuos, it might be little rough for you.

Unlike beautifully curved and rubber gripped Intuos pen, it is simply a plain circular cylinder.

It is about the size of three AAA batteries lined up.

From 2nd generation, Bamboo line features 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity.

The higher level allows you to draw more pressure-sensed line.

This is significant, because Intuos3, one of the professional ones, features 1024-level as well.

(You can draw thicker line when you put more pressure, and vice versa.)

In fact, this is doubled level from 1st generation. This is simply great for the price!

# Touch

The biggest reason I bought this product, despite the fact I own an Intuos4, is the multi-touch.

I had a doubt that how useful it is gonna be, but a tablet with touch-sensors made me sooo curious

that I had to order one right away.

The stinky feeling was right; it wasn't that useful.

For navigating, using the pen is wayyy faster.

For editing pictures, my keyboard works better.

Also the touch does not offer good precision to work with those Adobe programs.

Even though it is not-so-useful function with those professional programs,

it may be useful with scrapping and album-making programs, such as Shutterfly.

# Working Surface

Working on this new surface made me feel like I'm working on an actual paper.

With 1st generation, it was a bit too rough that the pen-tip wears away too fast.

One the other hand, Intuos3's surface was too slippery.

But this new Bamboo line's surface is less rough than the 1st gen, and is rougher than the ice-slippery Intuos3.

I think Wacom found just right roughness.

# Driver

The driver is a little bit disappointing.

I don't really get many options for customizing this product.

I could still program the pen and express buttons, but I couldn't program the finger gestures.

I hope Wacom update the driver, and allow users to add some custom gestures.

# Appearance

The specification of 'Bamboo Craft' and 'Bamboo Pen and Touch' are identical, just different designs.

Also Craft comes with a tutorial DVD, and some more deals (e.g. magazine subscription, Shutterfly, etc.) and picture editing programs.

I didn't want to get those extra stuffs, but I paid 30 more dollars for this design. (The recommended price of P&T is $99.)

I'm satisfied with the design, but I'm still not sure if it worth to spend extra $30.

# The bottom line

The 2nd Gen Bamboo is great product for those who are first to tablet, and those who need a decent tablet for leisure activities.

Though the specification is doubled up, the price is same from 1st Gen. So I would say it is a great bargain.

Though the touch is not that functional, this new technology is fun to play with.

For the tablet's original purpose, pen mousing, I would say it is one of the best. Wacom CTH461 Bamboo Craft Tablet

I purchased the Wacom Bamboo Craft after the Wacom brand was recommended to me by a graphic designer friend of mine. I knew I wanted to buy one to manipulate photos, use with animation software, and paint, but needed clarification of the different packages and sizes available, so I headed to the Wacom.com website to view the videos available for each one and check out the specs. I found the site very helpful in making my decision to purchase this package.

The Wacom Bamboo Craft, is geared towards 'crafty' home users. It has both the pen and the touch sensitivity, but you cannot use both the pen and the touch at the same time. (Easily switch between the two using a button on the pad.) It also comes with three great software packages: Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0, Corel Painter Essentials 4, and Color Efex Pro 3.0, which all give you amazing creativity for editing photos, painting, drawing and generally 'creating' more for scrapbooks and other craft production.

I also found that ArtRage Deluxe 2.5 works great with this tablet! Lots of fun for people who like to paint and very easy to use. Other software that you may want to consider buying to add to the fun of using this tablet include: Claymation Studio; make your videos 'claymation' videos with this software, Anime Studio Debut 6; animation software to draw cartoon characters, and Manga Studio Debut 4 (Win/Mac); for beginning manga animators.

The size of the tablet included in the Wacom Bamboo Craft package is generous, although it's not the largest tablet available. If you have about 13" in width and 9" in depth available on your desktop, this is perfect. It actually replaces my mouse (works as the pad on a laptop would with bonus features...) for my desktop. I'm very happy I didn't buy the bigger size, as while it would have been nice for drawing to have a larger pad, the desktop real estate it would have taken up wouldn't have been worth it to me.

The included pen also comes with 3 refillable inserts. The pen itself is thicker than a pencil; more like a Sharpie pen with a 'clicker' on it that adds function to the tablet. (NOTE: Be sure to watch the tutorials on how to use the tablet and make adjustments to the set-up. )

I didn't find the pen very comfortable to use. A bit like signing your name on a credit card kiosk at the market. You can handwrite something with the included software and have in inserted into an email (it reads your handwriting and puts it into text - recognizing your handwritten letters) or add a signature to a photo via this method. It will be useful for editing photos, but I wish it was a bit smaller.

Installation took some time; about 30 minutes. Each software package required a reboot before the next one could be installed, with Adobe Photoshop Elements needing to be installed first for the Efex one to be installed. My Vista Premium 64-bit operating system did not start the installation disk automatically, but all I had to do was go into 'My Computer' to double click the drive and it started up.

Following installation I needed to go into my computer's 'Control Panel' to tweak the tablet settings. I needed things to move a bit faster, but found very small adjustments are best, as the tablet is sensitive to them. It was here that I was able to change the links to the 4 buttons on the tablet to do what I wanted them to do.

Overall I'm pleased with my purchase. The included software, size and the ability to use pen OR touch were the deciding factors for me. While I didn't need a free scrapbooking magazine subscription (4 issues), nor Cafe Press freebies, or the included DVD with 'how-to' tutorials for scrapbookers, I think they are a fun addition to the package.

I checked several sites, but the best pricing I found on this item was on Amazon. I think if you are wanting a Wacom Bamboo tablet package, this is an excellent choice! - Digital Tablets - Bamboo - Multi-touch - Tablet'
