Printer Cable

I recently needed to buy a USB cable for my new printer and I found out that there are many USB cables at very different prices. So, doing a search I found the "Belkin 10FT USBA/USBB Device Cable" but I was not sure if it would work for a printer. Since it was the less expensive I decided to give it a try. I'm happy because the cable works great with my USB printer and I found out that the cable actually exceeds the features displayed on amazon site. The cable manufacturer part number is F3U133-10.With the following features:- Hi-speed data transfer to 480Mbps - 10 FT (3m)- A plug/ B plug- High performance 20-gauge power wires. - USB logo guarantees cables are 100% compliant with current USB specifications (Works with all USB devices A/B plug).- Works with USB 2.0 - Connect a USB 2.0 or 1.X device to your computer.- Belkin lifetime warranty.- Gold plated copper contacts provide maximum conductivity and minimizes data loss.According to the manufacturer site you can connect your USB printer, scanner, hard drive and more to your computer. As I said, it works great with my USB printer.I definitively recommend it because I got the less expensive (good length of 10ft) and great quality option for a USB printer cable. I'm also happy because the cable specifications exceeded my expectations for the money I paid. Belkin F3U133-10 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Cable (10 Feet)

When I purchased this product I thought I was getting a USB version 1 cable. It turned out to be 2.0. Fortunately the package said it was backward compatible and it was.The book that came with my printer stated I needed a USB cable with a length of no greater than 6 foot, shielded, etc. They should tell you this before you get the printer. Fortunately, the 10 foot cable connected and worked flawlessly. I always try to buy Belkin since they generally have top quality products and good support.

one cannot write poetically about cords, but I can say this is super value. Much less than I saw on the market. Works great, quality is superior to what I was checking out for comparisons, and I was so THRILLED to have the longer length. If you need extra USB cords, this is a good deal.

At $3.99, this is a good price for a name brand USB cable, but only because they tend to dramatically overcharge on their prices. There are no differences with USB cables other than length and the shape of the connectors placed on each end. There are plenty of online retailers that sell USB cables for less than $1.00 and they will work just as fine as any high priced one you may see at BestBuy, CircuitCity, Staples, OfficeMax, Radio Shack, etc. Many of the high priced cables will include gold plated connectors which is just a gimmick, they provide no better connection that those without it. Also USB cables do not have speeds associated with them they way computers and laptops do. There is no such thing as a USB 1.1 or 2.0 cable so if you have an older USB cable when USB 1.1 was the only thing out, it will work perfectly with the newer USB 2.0 technology. They are made exactly the same, you're told you need a newer "high speed" hoping that you'll throw away you perfectly capable current cable and buy the new $40 gold-plated zero-loss oxygen-free cable when you really don't need it. As I said at earlier, $3.99 is a good price for this set, but you can find better if you shop around. If Amazon is the only site you trust buying from, definitely get these.

1-17-2005 Update. At the current price, this is no-longer a good deal.

I bought a new printer on Dell and was going to buy a USB cable from them but when I saw $25 for the cable, I decided to look elsewhere. When I saw this cable on Amazon for such a low price, I was concerned that it wouldn't work with my printer. I received it quickly from Amazon and it worked great. Higly recommend to everyone.

$4 for a USB cable, nowhere except Amazon.com can offer this price. Compared with other local retail stores ($19.99), this is a lot cheaper. The cable is exactly the same as the local stores' USB cable. Worth to buy.

Wow, the price on this USB 2.0 cable is just incredible! It's high-quality, high-speed (USB 2.0), and just all-around excellent.

Plus, it can be used with more than just printers. You can also use it with many external drives (hard disk, DVD drive, CD drive, Zip drive, etc.) that use USB 2.0.

This is the best USB cable to get.'

Panasonic Phone Battery - panasonic phone battery, panasonic

There is not much to say about this battery pack. If your current Panasonic cordless phone has a PP104 (with a #29 displayed in a black box on the battery) NiMH battery pack then this is the unit you need. I received two of these batteries from Amazon.com in just two days. I had them installed in my cordless phones in just a couple of minutes. I left the phones on the charger overnight and my phones now work flawlessly. I am a little dissapointed that the batteries which came with the Panasonic phones only lasted about a year, but so far these new battery packs have brought new life back to my phones. The cost is fair and the quality seems just as good if not better than the original factory batteries. I know there are after market batteries that are compatible with my phones, and could be used in place of these PP104A units, but I believe in sticking with original equipment. For $14 each you really can't complain too much about the price. Panasonic Ni-MH Type 29 Battery (HHR-P104A/1B)

Ordered these batteries for my Panasonic 5.8Ghz phones and found they are worse than the original ones they are replacing. Old batteries lasting 5-7 days before charging with nomal daily usage, these ones last barely 3 before I need to re-charge them. Contacted reseller (As Good As New Electronics) and received extremely poor customer service. Got accused of using 'old and worn' phones - right... Was not even given the option to try another battery. They maybe selling cheaper priced batteries than your local stores, but their poor and prejudicial customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Find another reseller on Amazon. If you can't, pray you get a good battery and hope you don't have to deal with their non-customer service department. One star because I can't give them zero stars in order to post this review. - Panasonic - Pansonichhr-p-1 - Panasonic P-104 - Panasonic Phone Battery'

Collectors Edition - collectors edition, mickey mouse

First off, let me get out of the way that the game itself is fantastic. 5 out of 5 stars. Props to Warren Spector and Junction Point Studios (the game's developer). This review, however, regards the bonus material for buying the Collector's Edition and its value over buying the standard edition.

* The Mickey Statue: Cool concept, but one small problem: It was completely broken. Apparently, I'm NOT the only one with this problem! This seems to be a wide-scale defect. In my case, the left-arm fell off (a clean break right out of the arm socket, easily fixed) and his nose was also broken off (also fixed, but not as clean). Luckily I am one of those geeky adult collectors who is handy with small models and fixed it, but if you were buying this for your child for Christmas and their Mickey statue was shattered, they would be heartbroken. Also, this would be more understandable if the statue were actually a statue, but it's more of a plastic/vinyl action figure, a material that tends to be durable. How many plastic action figures have you seen ever shatter during shipping? They can take a beating! This is clearly shoddy craftsmanship.

* Wiimote Skin: This is the only included product that's of high quality and matches what you expect. It is not the same material as what DecalGirl-type skins usually use, it's more like a sticker, but still it fits the Wiimote exactly. I put it on a Wii Motion Plus remote and it fit perfectly.

* Console Skins: These skins were pretty much the reason I bought the Collector's Edition over the regular game. The "skins" turn out to be dinky little 3"x3" square stickers. They are not fit to the sides of a Wii console, the way other console skins fit. All in all, VERY disappointed. By the way, if you want an idea of how big the skins are, look at the thumbnail for this item on Amazon up above. See the skins next to the statue? That's the exact size comparison. I thought they were just shrunk to fit the image, but no, that's actually how big they are.

* Bonus DVD: Not much material. This is stuff that should have just been embedded with Flash video on the official site. If this were the only extra, it would not be worth it. Odd that you can't actually play this on your Wii (no DVD-Video support). Hope you have a real DVD player or another game console that can play it.

If I had to make this purchase again, I would not. However, I would instead buy the regular edition of the game. The game itself is probably the best non-Nintendo game on the system. The Collector's Edition extras however, are a rip-off!

Disney Interactive really should recall the statue and skins and ship off non-broken statues and skins that actually fit! They should outsource the skin to DecalGirl, and as for the statue, the company that made it was called MindStyle and should be avoided. Buyer Beware! Disney Epic Mickey Collector's Edition

Good game. Collectors Edition sucks though. Figure (arm falls off when twisting, ears are easily marred) and stickers are cheap (not completely size appropriate for where they are expected to be placed). I expected better for a Collectors Edition especially a Disney one.

The mickey figurine came broken! The "wii skin" was a cheap sticker that looked like it came from a quarter machine and is not the size of a standard wii skin. Great game. BAD product. Save the extra $20 and just get the game.

With how many complaints this Collector's Edition got, I knew it was only a matter of time before it dropped in price. I didn't expect it to go as low as it is right now, so I went and got one for myself, seeing as how it's cheaper than the game on its own at the moment. I was well-aware that a lot of people got broken Mickey figures in their boxes, which is something that's just plain inexcusable. But I lucked out and my Mickey was complete, so this will be one of the few reviews not fueled by rage.

First, yes, there are some disappointing things about this set, starting with the 'Wii skin'. It's a small square sticker that'd be better off on a laptop, skateboard or mirror (do people still do that?). You can see how small it is in the pictures above, and they really shouldn't have advertised it as a skin, which is supposed to cover the Wii console. I actually laughed out loud when I saw this for myself. The Oswald Wii controller skin is cool though, and fits perfectly, though it's just applied to the front of the controller. Now my controller doesn't look so boring any more, and Oswald is finally getting some representation.

The bonus disc (kept in a thin cardboard slipcase) has some features that you probably won't watch more than once, but some are worth repeated viewings. The behind the scenes featurettes cover a lot of ground regarding the different aspects of making the game. This runs at over a half an hour, and is full of interviews with the designers and how the game was made. You can see that the developers really cared for this project and put their all into the design of the game, and that's cool. There are bonus videos, two being glorified trailers, and the other being a cool segment with artist Garibaldi painting a large Mickey mural in a stylish way. I thought this was one of the best things on this disc, as the art he does is really cool, especially when you see how he does it. The Concept Art gallery is my favorite thing, as it shows a handful of amazing pieces from two categories: characters and levels. I spent 20 minutes looking at these, not because there were a lot, but because of how incredible most of them were. I REALLY wish we could get an official 'Art of' book for Epic Mickey, and wish that some of the concept art that surfaced online years ago were here too, but what we get is still good. Finally are the 4 Remastered Mickey Mouse Shorts: Thru the Mirror, Lonesome Ghosts, Clock Cleaners and The Whalers. The picture and audio on these is better than what was on the Walt Disney Treasures discs, and any fan of the old cartoons will treasure these shorts.

Like I mentioned above, my Mickey figure thankfully arrived in perfect shape, with no broken arms, legs or nose. When I took him out, I was actually surprised about how thin the tail was, and that more people didn't get theirs with that broken instead. The figure is perfectly sculpted, and I love the cautious pose Mickey's in. He has an articulated head, feet and arms, and you can remove the paintbrush. But, keep in mind that this figure is just wrapped in bubble wrap, and the paintbrush will float around in the packaging. My Mickey has two very light yellowish green rub marks near his mouth because of it, but you can only see them if the lighting's right. Still, this is a very great figure and the main reason I had any interest at all in this set from the get go.

Finally, there's the game, which is hit or miss with most people. Some say it's too hard for younger kids, but too 'kiddy' for older gamers. Most complain about the camera (and for good reason) ruining an otherwise great experience. It's up to you, but if you haven't played the game yet and were wondering about going for just the game or this Collector's Edition, NOW is the time to get this set, as it's nearly half the original price.

I'm glad I purchased this, if only for the bonus disc and figure. Granted, getting a perfect Mickey figure is like playing Russian Roulette, but if you luck out, this set is well worth it. Especially when it's less than the game itself. While there are much, much better Collector's Editions out there, the price justifies everything for me. - Collectors Edition - Video Games - Disney - Mickey Mouse'

Wireless N Router

Well, now having the need for a wireless N network I did a bit of research into which router I should buy. After reading so many positive reviews, I kept teetering on whether or not I should try this one out... especially since I hadn't heard of the company and the price point was so low. Eventually I figured "what could it hurt" and ordered it. I immediately got an email from the company thanking me for the order which included the support information if needed. That was a nice touch.

The bottom line is that I'm VERY glad I ordered this. Set up was a breeze if you follow the very simple instructions to the letter. I was up and running in minutes.

My other concern was how well it would sing with my Cisco Wireless N Bridge(The Cisco-Linksys WET610N Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapter)in my living room which is notoriously finicky with non-Cisco product integration. I'm very pleased to report that it immediately started communicating once set up, and has been rock solid for 3 days streaming Hi Def 720p and 1080p video. The signal strength is fantastic and has out performed other routers I have owned in the past. Time will tell how it holds up over the long run. I will update this post if anything goes awry.

Finally as icing on the cake, the router just looks cool. Thats always a happy bonus!

The only negative I could find is that the tech support line isn't 24 hours. Seeing as how I didn't need it, I suppose that really isn't a negative in the truest sense.

I'm a heavy Amazon user who doesn't even write reviews yet felt compelled to for this gem. A Great product, at a great price, and easy set up. Who could ask for more?

*** EDIT 06/14/11 Wow, there are a ton of comments on my review and I thought it would be a good idea to chime in again. Here we are about 8 months after my purchase and the router is still going strong. I have noticed that there was some signal degradation about 3 months in, but I changed the broadcast channel and it cleared up. Whether that was a fix or coincidence I don't know. As far as I can remember it only dropped once and I had to reset it. Not sure what people are expecting, but I thought (and still think) I got fantastic bang for the buck. And to answer some of the people implying I somehow work for the company that makes or markets it: I absolutely do not! I just was pleasantly surprised and wanted to share. Medialink - Wireless N Router - 802.11n - 150 Mbps - 2.4 Ghz - NEW Design w/ Internal Antenna

I have to admit I was nervous about buying something that doesn't have a huge name behind it. I've dealt with plenty of routers in my time and some of them are so confusing to configure, and caused so many headaches. When I opened the box I was greeted by a small, light-weight, sleek looking box...I have to say that I was really excited about the internal antenna, those old parallel antenna were the worst thing to look at. Being the typical computer guy I am I didn't really read through the directions, I just grabbed it and plugged it in. I reset the modem, then reset the router (by power cycling, not the reset button on the back) and.......it worked. I logged into the web interface and set up the Wifi security, grabbed my laptop to connect to it and.....it worked.

The wireless N is a thing of beauty for someone that has been stuck with G for so long, it's fast and has great coverage, I was able to get a stronger signal outside than before.

The web interface is very nicely laid out and there are a ton of features

Pros:

Quick setup

very nice looking

lights are not too bright, even though there are a lot of them

internal antenna

affordable

Cons:

no Gig ports

included cat5 cable could be a little longer.

things to note:

I didn't use the included setup disc

I have cable internet and use an older Linksys cable modem.

I was a little hesitant to order this router since there was no other review, but the price was lower than other wireless G routers, so I thought I would give this N router a try. So far, I am glad I did. I am writing this review from my laptop using the wireless connection right now.

PROS:

-Price (paid $[...] on 10/2/2010)

-Easy setup. The wired connection was instant, all I had to do was plug the cables. The wireless connection was also a breeze and took two minutes with the included CD wizard.

-Speed! My local network connection is 100Mbps, so I selected this router which is slightly faster (150Mbps wireless / 100Mbps wired) in order to avoid bottlenecks. I am getting download speeds ~0.9 MBytes / second wired and ~ 1.1MBbytes / second wireless with this router, i.e. as fast as I was getting when plugged directly to the network.

-Streams movies without problems.

CONS:

No problems so far. If you like solving problems you may be disappointed.

I have had this router for less than a day, which is not long enough to know if it is stable, but so far so good. I have not tried VOIP yet, but I will update if any problems arise.

UPDATE: VOIP works without problems too. I have had the router for 5 days and still no problems. It performs so well, I have almost forgotten it is there.

I took a chance on this a few months ago, when it was relatively new and had fewer reviews. The company emailed me a few days after ordering to thank me and inform me how I could receive assistance if I needed it.

Well, I haven't needed it. In fact, this router is about as "plug-and-play" as a USB drive or mouse. I didn't even follow the Quick Start instructions...I just plugged it in and it worked right away! I previously had a Linksys B router which would drop the connection about once or twice a night. However, the MediaLink router has worked perfectly for months...I haven't lost the connection once! This router will seriously compete with the big boys, and for the price, it is an incredible value.

Pros:

+ Very, very easy to set up

+ Perfect signal anywhere in my apartment

+ Has worked continuously with NO LOST CONNECTIONS in two months

+ Looks very sleek

+ Fantastic price

+ Friendly customer service, although with how well the router works, I may not ever have to contact them again...

Cons:

- This is a STRETCH, but the blue lights on the router are a bit bright...it may distract you in a dark environment. However, I am never in the same room as the router, so I do not care at all.

Note: I use a Toshiba Windows 7 laptop, which is the only device that utilizes the router. I haven't tested it with multiple machines or with my Wii or anything.

(Also, I've noticed some people responding to other 5 star reviews with accusations that the reviewers work for the makers of the router. Not sure what their agenda is (Linksys employees/fanboys?), but for the record, I do not work for Mediabridge Products, LLC, nor do I know anyone who works for them. I am not receiving any compensation or other such benefits for writing this review, either. I am really impressed with this product, and I rely on reviews before making any online purchase, so I thought I'd contribute.)'

Video Games - fps, black ops

I think it's safe to say that Activision has done right by Wii gamers this generation. Time after time developers have overlooked the Wii, or simply made a crappy port of a title to say they supported the console. Activision has simply done everything they could to push the little white box that could. They've shown that with the Guitar Hero titles which really took advantage of features on the Wii that quite honestly a lot of us didn't know existed.

Now here we are with the seventh installment of the Call of Duty franchise, and fortunately this is not the Wii's first rodeo when it comes to COD. We have been treated to COD 3, World at War, and even a ported version of Modern Warfare and the thing that stands out most about these titles is that they all got better. So, the question is does COD Black Ops take a step forward for Wii gamers, or does it fall flat. After spending several hours with the game on Wii I can safely say this is a must buy title for Wii owners looking for the definitive shooter on Wii!

Gameplay: 95%

We've already been given Goldeneye from Activision last week which gave us every control scheme possible. While Black Ops doesn't include GC support it does keep Classic Controller support as well as the superior Wiimote/Nunchuck setup that Wii gamers have come to love. If the latter is your choice of control all of the customization options expected are present, and once you have it tweaked to your liking you will be killing soldiers and Zombies alike.

Graphics: 90%

Let's face it. The Wii version doesn't have the visual fidelity the HD versions do, and who really expects it too. However, this game looks impressive on the Wii. Absolutely on par with Goldeneye in every respect. Obviously you will find those pesky jagged edges, but this game doesn't falter when it comes to utilizing every bit of the Wii's horsepower.

Sound: 100%

It's what a shooter set in a war zone should sound like. It's immersive, and intense. When you see an explosion on the battlefield you here it as well. The voice work through the entire game is superbly delivered as well, and to be honest at points the over sound quality rivals the HD versions.

Story: 100%

After playing Modern Warfare Reflex for Wii I thought Activision had an uphill climb for story telling in their COD series. However, Treyarc has done a fantastic job with Black Ops. Set during the Vietnam era the game begins with the attempted assasination of Fidel Castro, and you are in the role Mason who has been tasked to kill him. You will get to see President JFK which is cool and somewhat disturbing. The Presentation of the story enthralls you, and you will never find yourself being bored.

Overall: 100%

The sheer quality this title exuberates is unheard of for the majority of Wii titles. Normally us Wii gamers get the short end of the stick, and get stripped down versions of popular titles. However, Treyarc has poured in every thing from the HD versions (except for campaign co-op) including the popular Zombies mode. The muliplayer component is also a feat in itself due to the inclusion of 4-player co-op Zombie mode through Nintendo's WFC. The only way I can sum up this review is Kudos to Treyarc and Activision for giving Wii gamers the game they deserved! Call of Duty: Black Ops

Of course there are many who claim the COD games are the same every single year, I am not one of them. I happen to also be a Wii gamer. Anyone making fun of gamers on Wii obviously haven't moved past the year 2006 when Wii jokes were "cool" and cannot comprehend that people like games on different systems. Of course the graphics aren't as shiny as the other versions, this is something that has been known and should be known when you purchase this game. The online isn't Xbox Live, again, this is something that should already be known. I have to say it is as close as ever on Nintendo's console to being something along the lines of "Live". Anyway on to the actual review.

**The game as many already know takes place during a bunch of periods in history. The story itself isn't something to write home about, but the presentation is great and it does capture a "cinematic experience". This can add to the experience or detract to the experience. One instance if may detract is when it shows the same cut-scene every time you load a different menu or switching from multiplayer to single player. It might get tedious. Zombies makes a debut on Wii and is a total blast both solo and online.

**The graphics seem to be a mix of World at War and Modern Warfare Reflex. They can look really great sometimes but other times you are staring at a blurry texture or low-poly model here and there. The explosions and lighting look very good though and when you are running through a street and see a bunch of explosions and fires ahead of you it can look really nice. More blood seemed to have been added to the mix and the game now features the "blood hitting the camera" effect when you shoot somebody up close or are hit. This feature had been featured in the HD versions of MW2. Overall the graphics are pretty good just seem to lack a little polish here and there.

**The controls to me are great. I have not tried the classic controller myself, but that is because I favor the remote and nunchuck configuration. Set up just right the game can feel great. It takes a little to fine-tune the controls and sensitivity at first, but as somebody who has put alot of time into both World at War and Modern Warfare on Wii I knew what I was doing. Newcomers might be a bit frustrated but I would suggest to hang in there and perhaps use the practice mode in multiplayer to tune their controls just right. I also advise the dead zones always be the smallest possible.

**Multiplayer is Online and zombies online ONLY. Unfortunately this game does NOT have split-screen multiplayer or even the "squad-mate mode" from previous COD titles on Wii. However the online is where this game really shines. The game seems to try and tuck friend codes under the carpet and they are ONLY used if you want to play with somebody specific. In this case, there is no need to both exchange friend codes. Unlike most games that utilize this system, once you put in somebody's friend code, they KNOW it and are sent an invite to either decline or accept. You both don't have to contact each other and input both codes anymore.

Friends can also be added online. You can add friends either in the lobby while playing, or the game will keep a list of "recent players". I am not sure how long or how many it can store, but I have 47 people and the last person was from 17 hours ago when I first played. Adding people as a friend means you can join their games, invite them to games, and practice with them on dummies (practice mode mentioned above). You can also see their stats and leaderboard positions relate to yours. You can also see stats for ANYONE you are currently playing with or have played with before (the list of recent players). Stats also include their awards, challenges, graphs of performance for EVERY game mode and EVERY weapon, favourite weapon and game mode, contracts they have purchased/completed/not completed, and much more.

Adding someone as a friend (or ally) also means you can send text messages to eachother using a USB keyboard. Communication also comes in the form of voice chat with the new Headbanger Headset. While sending messages through text is limited to friends, voice chat is open to anyone. Chat with anyone in game or in the lobby, something only sen on one other game right now for Wii and that is monster hunter 3. Conduit 2 will also open it up to chatting with anyone.

Online modes features the same basic modes seen in past games along with some new ones. Challenges are back along with custom classes, kill streaks etc. New this time are contracts (which new ones are added every so often), custom kill-streaks, and wager matches. The game uses a currency of "COD points" which are earned with kills, kill streaks, and completing challenges. This currency is used to purchase perks, purchase contracts, purchase new kill streak rewards, and bet on your performance in wager matches. New also is that the score card (shows up after every online game) shows much more information about your performance. It will detail the challenges you have completed but also rewards for personal bests int he game, overall bests in the game, etc.

**Overall the game is a blast. The amount of content is just awesome and will keep you busy for a long time. The single player is alot of fun but the game shines with the multiplayer and new (to wii) zombie mode. You will find the online as a whole much more interactive and intuitive this time around then past games, COD included, on Wii. There is a better sense of community and interactivity, which is a great step in the right direction on the Wii console. New contracts will be added every day or so and also new maps will be available for download soon, another first for COD on Wii. I would recommend this game to any shooter fans especially fans of the COD series on Wii. With more content, more ways to control, amazing online, there is no reason to not give this a try!

Communication - speech recognition, voice recognition

UNCORRECTED VERSION

I dictated this review using Dragon NaturallySpeaking number nine. The first half of the review is the raw version, just as Dragon NaturallySpeaking transcribed it. Then I will correct the review so you can judge how well the program performs.

I will admit my expectations were low. I had previously owned an earlier version of a Dragon NaturallySpeaking, but it performed so poorly I removed it from the computer. I also seem to remember that Windows came with a version of the speech recognition that also did not work well enough to be worth the bother. I quit using it as well. The problem with each of these programs was that, although they did transcribe many words correctly, they made so many mistakes it turned out just to be easier to type myself more, since I generate a lot of letters for my business, to hire a transcription service.

I bought a Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 9, standard version, on only among on a whim. Magazine reviews of the program had been a favorable, and the price was only $99. Still, I expected poor results. As you have seen however, the program does a remarkably good job of transcribing my speech. This is with very little training -- no more than a few minutes. I now find that it is quicker to take dictate into Dragon NaturallySpeaking and later go back and correct the errors than it is to just type myself.

Still, the product does have a few drawbacks.

Number one: the user license is for only one person. Even if you install the software on only one computer, you must still pay in nuance separate licensing fee for each person who uses the program. Imagine having to pay a separate licensing fee for each person who uses Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat elements. That's crazy, and it just passes me off.

Number two: although I have a 3.2 GHz computer, Dragon NaturallySpeaking does seem to noticeably slow down the machine's performance.

Number three: I'm a little worried about the programs stability and compatibility. It sometimes seems to freeze for 30 seconds or so. It will sometimes accept dictation into Microsoft Access, other times it accepts the dictation then immediately erases the result. I've also found that my mission-critical retrospect backup software isn't working.

[Typed adendum: I've also discovered (Win XP Pro, Office 2003): DNat.Speaking

1) damages MS Access so that quitting Access leaves an orphan instance of Access running--and you can't then reopen Access.

2) Damages MS Word so that you can no longer select text with the mouse.

Number four: related to number three is Nuance software's policy of charging for technical assistance. I'm worried that the company puts out a product with obvious flaws [it's seeing number three above], then turns fixing those problems into a profit center.

Finally, I've discovered that dictating letters and reports results and of very different prose style then typing does. Part of the reason is that when you're dictating you must think carefully about each sentence, but once the sentence is a dictated there's no good way to go back to change it. Your output is a wordier. Your thoughts and paragraphs are much less tightly structured. That means that Dragon NaturallySpeaking is good for in a formal e-mails and job progress notes, and for highly structured, repetitive, business reports. It is much less useful for writing that requires careful thought and structure.

CORRECTED VERSION; I've ALL CAPSed corrections.

I dictated this review using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.0. The first half of the review is the raw version, just as Dragon NaturallySpeaking transcribed it. Then I will correct the review so you can judge how well the program performs.

I will admit my expectations were low. I had previously owned an earlier version of XXaXX Dragon NaturallySpeaking, but it performed so poorly I removed it from the computer. I also seem to remember that Windows came with a version of the speech recognition that also did not work well enough to be worth the bother. I quit using it as well. The problem with each of these programs was that, although they did transcribe many words correctly, they made so many mistakes it turned out just to be easier to type myself, OR since I generate a lot of letters for my business, to hire a transcription service.

I bought XXaXX Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 9, standard version, on XX a whim. Magazine reviews of the program had been a favorable, and the price was only $99. Still, I expected poor results. As you have seen however, the program does a remarkably good job of transcribing my speech. This is with very little training -- no more than a few minutes. I now find that it is quicker to XXtakeXX dictate into Dragon NaturallySpeaking and later go back and correct the errors than it is to just type myself.

Still, the product does have a few drawbacks.

#1 The user license is for only one person. Even if you install the software on only one computer, you must still pay XXinXX Nuance A separate licensing fee for each person who uses the program. Imagine having to pay a separate licensing fee for each person who uses Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat Elements. That's crazy, and it just PISSES me off.

#2: Although I have a 3.2 GHz computer, Dragon NaturallySpeaking does seem to noticeably slow down the machine's performance.

#3: I'm a little worried about the programs stability and compatibility. It sometimes seems to freeze for 30 seconds or so. It will sometimes accept dictation into Microsoft Access, other times it accepts the dictation then immediately erases the result. I've also found that my mission-critical Retrospect backup software isn't working.

#4: Related to number three is Nuance Software's policy of charging for technical assistance. I'm worried that the company puts out a product with obvious flaws [SEE number three above], then turns fixing those problems into a profit center.
