Digital Camera Lenses - leica, panasonic

The Panasonic/Leica Elmarit 45mm F2.8 macros is a little bit controversial because of it's price. However there are a lot of considerations. Built by Panasonic but designed by Leica and built to Leica supervised quality standards.

This lens is quite small and light, a perfect match for the mFT (Micro Four Thirds) cameras as size and weight are design considerations to match the systems. It is very well built solid construction with a blend of plastics and metal. Compared to better quality Macro lenses it is smaller and lighter by a good margin. It is most often compared to the Olympus Zuiko 50mm F2 which is one of the finest macro lenses built for the four thirds sensor systems or any system for that matter. The 50mm is heavier, larger and requires an adapter to be used on mTF cameras. On olympus mTF 50mm autofocus works erratically, on Panasonic mTF autofocus of the Olympus 50mm does not work at all, you must use manual focus . Auto aperture works with both. This same applies to any other "legacy" macro from other manufacturers. You can get adapters for about 90% of all legacy lenses made to use them with mTF cameras but most will be either fully manual, standard four third lenses will work with auto aperture but only some will provide autofocus. However, as of this writing, the 45mm F2.8 Elmarit is the only macro lens designed and built specifically for the mTF system cameras (Olympus and Panasonic). Some mTF zooms provide some very close focusing but none of the zooms provide true macro.

The 45mm is an internal focus lens. This means that regardless of focus distance the front element of the lens never extends or changes position. The 50mm Olympus, is an extending design (as are most macro lenses), so the front element extends out farther the closer you get to the subject. While I don't have the ability to perform a technical comparison, generally this may means that at 1:2 magnification, an internal design, the front lens element may not be as close to the subject as an extending design. For most photography this is not significant but for macro it is. The actual focus point is internal to the lens optical system, not the front lens element. The closer the front lens element is to the subject, the more it blocks the light reaching the subject (because you are very, close). So internal focus lenses may provide the maximum possible clearance for the front element making it easier to light the subject. There can be exceptions so this is not a hard rule.

Another consideration is "Effective focal length". You may read where advertisers promote a lens or camera based upon "effective focal length" Effective focal length is relative to a 35mm film camera or a full frame digital camera. On a full frame 35mm or digital camera, the optical focal length and effective focal length are the same in most cases, so the field of view is relative to the effective focal length. The shorter focal length, the wider the field of view (wide angle) the longer the focal length, the narrower the field of view (telephoto). Most digital sensors are smaller then full frame and are said to have a crop or magnification factor. For Four Thirds and micro four third sensors, the crop factor is 2X. Therefore the effective focal length of the 45mm is 2X or 90mm. This is a short telephoto and the advantage is it provides a longer working distance for macro shots.

The 45mm also makes an excellent short telephoto and portrait lens. The 45mm has a focus limiter switch on the lens. When turned on under normal use this allows you to restrict focus range to normal distances so the lens does not search through the macro range. It speeds up auto focus in these circumstances.

So there are some top end legacy macro lenses that are technically sharper then the 45mm F2.8 and some that are faster. They are also larger and heavier and currently cannot provide some auto focus or in some cases auto aperture with mTF systems. It is important to understand that this does not make the 45mm a bad lens, quite the Contrary, the 45mm F2.8 is an excellent pro grade lens. It is very sharp, well built, focuses quickly at normal ranges, will search some at macro, typical for almost all lenses in the macro range. I love the lens and it is to me worth every penny.

The lens will focus to 1:1 magnification (life size) directly without an extension tube. Many macro lenses will only focus to 1:2 including the 50mm F2 Olympus lens and therefore require an extension tube to get all the way down to 1:1 magnification. (extra cost, size and weight)

IImage quality for both telephoto, portraits and macro is very good to Excellent wide open at F2.8 to F11. Some deterioration at F16 to F22 due to diffraction but still good to very good (this is common for most digital sensors smaller then full frame and is an excellent performance overall)

Vignetting: (corners darker then center) is noticeable (mild) wide open but insignificant stopped down 1 stop. (Very good)

Distortion: There is none which is optically excellent and better then most. (Excellent)

Chromatic Aberration: Color fringing is very mild at most apertures and not significant or detectable to most people. (very good)

Bokeh: The term bokeh is the blur or the quality of the blur in out-of-focus areas of an image, or "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light or highlights. Ideally they should be very smooth and blended with no significant sphering or octagonal shapes. There is no technical specification for Bokeh. It is a subjective evaluation made by the viewer or photographer. For me, the 45mm Bokeh is "Very Good" but not excellent.

Focus speed: I can only evaluate this as used on the GH1 as I haven't used it with other mTH bodies. Extremely fast, almost instant in good light. Fast in low light, Searches some in very dim light or if the subject(s) are of very dark (black) or of very low contrast in low light. Overall, as fast or faster then my Olympus E3 DSLR with 12-60 lens. (an excellent performance) -- I don't shoot much video but did a brief test in my apartment with low to dim lighting, using only 2 60 watt bulbs in one corner, bounced off the wall. I found the video focus to be better then most but not instant. The 45mm has virtually silent autofocus so the autofocus lens produces no noticeable noise when

Overall for features, internal focus, size, weight, match to the system, image quality, focus speed and versatility I rate this lens as Excellent with some exceptions for vignetting wide open, very slight color fringing and Bokeh. Not matter how you measure it, it still comes up as a true professional quality optic. Micro Sd Card - micro sdhc, microsdhc

Brought transend 8 gb microsdhc with usb card 2.0 reader ts8gusdhc6-p3 from amazon. Card is fine, but reader doesn't work. Could have bought it cheaper without reader, but really wanted the reader. Lesson learned. Transcend 8 GB Class 6 microSDHC Flash Memory Card with USB 2.0 Card Reader TS8GUSDHC6-P3

Just purchased this item this month (5/09) and used it twice before the USB adapter came apart into three pieces while removing it from the USB plug on my computer cracking the microSDHC card in the middle at the same time. The card itself worked fine, until it was broken in the adapter. While the adapter did work before it broke, it did not slide into the USB port easily like other USB plug in items do. I cannot recommend purchasing this item.

This was about the cheapest way to get a Class 6 8GB microSDHC card. I'm using the elago Mobile Nano II USB 2.0 microSDHC Flash Memory Card Reader with it because it is a much smaller device.

I used robocopy to performed a brute speed test with a 700 MB file:

copy from a 7200 RPM SATA II disk to a 10,000 RPM SATA II disk: 64,262,230 Bytes/sec

copy from a 7200 RPM SATA II disk to a 2GB standard microSD card: 5,900,062 Bytes/sec

copy from a 7200 RPM SATA II disk to the Transcend 8 GB Class 6 microSDHC card mounted in the elago reader: 17,561,145 Bytes/sec

The Transcend Class 6 microsSDHC card is about 3 times as fast as the standard microSD card.

Got this for my HTC. Works great and I love the card reader because I can swap my micro into my car's head-unit for music. The reader is not too bulky on my key chain and seems durable so far. The card itself is decent for read/write speeds when transferring data. I used to have this company's higher speed card but it was only up to 1GB. I hope they start making the higher capacities in the faster speeds. As always good service from Amazon. I recommend this product.

Both these are awesome for the price.I put the card in my phone and all I have to do to get pictures off is use the tool and plug it into my computer...all for only like 15 bucks. No more extra charges on my phone account for transfering pictures to my email.Very convenient. Thanks Amazon.I can always find a great deal on your website.

The important part of this combo--the SDHC card--is absolutely fine: Fast, compatible, and everything it should be. The reader is just a teensy bit on the chintzy side: All-plastic (except for the contacts), and the card sometimes gets caught under an alignment tab when inserted. It works fine, but it's just not quite as nice as the one from Kingston, for example.

PROS:

It's fast (it's a class 6 card)

It comes with a free reader

CONS:

My HTC Touch Pro didn't like it at ALL. I tried several other readers, and phones, and the card worked perfectly in all of them (this includes two Dell laptops and their built in SDHC readers, my HP dv2, a cheap 3.5" multi-card reader, a Nokia E71, and the included reader). Something about the Touch Pro and this card just didn't work. I thought a microSD card is a microSD card is a microSD card, but I guess I was wrong.

My rating is really for the microSDHC card and not the USB card reader. This microSDHC card is an excellent value. I have three and I use them for business use in our corporate phones and have been using them for about three months with no problems. I don't use the USB card reader that came with the cards though.

CONS:

- The card reader that comes with the microSDHC feels cheap to the touch and is easy to break. I broke one by accident and other readers have complained about them breaking as well.

PROS:

- Great price per GB for a microSDHC card

- Excellent for expanded storage in smartphones and PDAs

- Worry free...I've deployed 3 of these for business purposes and have had zero problems to date with the cards (can't really rate the USB card readers though)

Four stars for the card but couldn't give 5 stars because the card reader is so cheap. If you really need the USB card reader, opt for a different product, but if all you need is the card, this combo is sometimes cheaper than just the card and you always have the USB card reader just in case. - Microsdhc - Class 6 - Micro Sdhc - 8 Gb Micro Sdhc Memory Card'

Uniden Cordless Phone - answering machine, cordless phone

All in all a good product. Solid, durable, no major flaws.

The call block feature is better than several other phones, other phones ring once then block the call. This one suppresses the first ring, so no sound until caller id is shown. So blocked calls are just silent. Nice.

The base will work with a power outage! +++

Speaker phone good.

Some of the reasons for 4 rather than 5 stars:

Quirk 1. When you page a handset from a handset (the "find it under the couch function") the handset you are holding rings (LOUD) as well. I have to stick the #*&*^!! thing under my arm so I can locate the missing handset. No reason to have the one your holding screaming!

Quirk 2. When you are using speaker phone on a handset, if you press talk (most phones you go to non-speaker phone handset) you just activated call waiting or hung up on your party. The base works like "normal" phones.

As the negative reviewer noted: There are several other quirks, all livable, all a pain. But the competition I checked had their own bugs. Uniden DECT 6.0 Corded/Cordless Digital Answering System with Three Cordless Handsets (DECT2188-3)

This phone does a very good job when blocking junk calls. You may find that some repetitive junk callers simply stop calling after this phone blocks their calls. That has been my experience. The call block number list can hold 20 numbers. That does not sound like much, but the majority of junk calls I received came from only a few numbers. After a few weeks of use my call block list only includes six numbers.

Each handset maintains its own 70 number directory. Some people prefer a unified directory shared by all handsets, but I prefer that each handset has its own directory. It is easy to synchronize the handset directories if desired.

The only negatives I can report with this phone are in the areas of sound quality and handset batteries. The sound quality is somewhat inferior compared with earlier generation Panasonic systems I have used. The sound quality is acceptable, just not as good as the Panasonic system it is replacing. The handset rechargeable batteries are of a proprietary form, so when they wear out they must be replaced by batteries purchased from Uniden, unless another company produces a compatible version. I would rather have the handsets use rechargeable AAA batteries, which can be purchased from many sources at typically lower cost.

For me, the call blocking trumps the few negatives I mentioned. I could not be happier with the way the Uniden DECT2188 system blocks junk phone calls.

I have been waiting a long time to get some Dect offerings comparable with my 5.8Ghz Uniden system I used to have, the TRU8888. Unfortunately I gave my system to a friend when I switched to VOIP and in anticipation of the new Dect technology. What a mistake! Reluctantly I settled for the Dect 2080 and waited. Now for this phone.

What I love about this system is the combination corded base and cordless handsets. Why you ask, because most of the time I prefer a cordless handset. That is until I'm at my desk on the internet while making a business call. Then I love being able to dial from the base and place calls on speaker. Fabulous feature that I have sorely missed. I love that Uniden changed the back lighting from the unattractive orange to a very pretty blue. The price is great for basically getting four phones. I like that the sound quality and battery life are good. Another fantastic feature is that the message indicator works both with voice mail and the built in answering system. Overall pretty impressive.....until...

Now for what I don't like. The fact that you must delete an entire number even if only to change one digit is RIDICULOUS!!! This has been a pet peeve of mine since I obtained my first Uniden system and I am angry that they haven't bothered to fix this problem yet. Seems so trivial. Maybe this is your first cordless expandable phone system or maybe you've only ever needed to replace an entire number. Well, imagine this. You have decided to stop getting ripped off by the phone company and decide to switch to VOIP. There are numerous providers from which to choose, but not all of them require that you dial the same way. Some offer seven digit dialing while others offer ten digit dialing, then there are those, like my provider that require eleven digit dialing (you know, 1-area code-number). When I switched to my VOIP provider I had to literally erase all of the phone numbers in the phone book and reenter them to include the extra digits. This task is especially painful because, unlike those of you who might not have used this type of phone before, I have, for many years. I couldn't even tell you one of my friend's or family member's phone numbers. We get a number, put it into a handset, then copy the new entry to all the other handsets. I am lucky to recognize an area code. It would be a very simple matter to enable the touchpad to go left or right when entering numbers so as to edit them. You can do this with the names. Why not with numbers? Why???

Another annoyance is the back lighting on the handsets. Only the numbers, * and # are back lit. All of the other very important buttons are rendered invisible in low light or dark conditions. I use my phones very often in low light conditions. I have to press buttons until I finally find the one I'm looking for. Why not just turn on the light? you ask. Imagine this. I'm sitting comfortably on the lounger watching a movie. One cat is sleeping happily on my lap while another sits right beside me and yet another has crawled up onto the bolster pillow resting his precious head on my arm. Across the room on the other couch my husband has also been conquered by his two favorite kitties. Wow, we're hungry, let's order that pizza real quick. I grab the phone to make the call and have to fumble around until I find the right buttons. Or you've started the film and gotten comfortable only to then notice the message waiting indicator flashing. Pause the film and let's see who called. But wait, I can't find the message key because it isn't back lit. You get the picture. Annoying.

And now for the most hated things about this phone. Only seven ring tones! My old system had twenty. Seven is just not enough especially if you'd actually like to use the personal ring feature. These handsets also have no headset jack or belt clip. Now initially I thought of these features as something I'd never use, until I had them. The speakerphone is nice for getting through automated phone screening systems and conversing with more than one person in the same room. However it is most comfortable to use a headset for one on one conversations. It is easier for them to hear me and me to hear them without having to turn up the volume too loud. The belt clip is invaluable when cooking in the kitchen or when someone calls while your in the midst of completing a task. Before I could plug in my headset, clip the phone to me and walk about my home or yard as necessary. The fact that these items are not included in this phone system is shocking and uncomfortable enough that I may even return this to Amazon. I haven't decided yet. I'm still loving the corded base. Then again I could just give up on this system and switch back to 5.8Ghz systems that are loaded with features and look good too.

*****UPDATE*****

I forgot to mention a very cool new feature on this phone that many of you might like. This system has the capability to block up to twenty numbers. How, you ask, could I have forgotten this? This feature is doubly redundant for me. I have used call screening devices such as Intelescreener and currently the Person to Person units. They offer much more robust screening capabilities. My current VOIP provider also offers robust call screening.

I did return the phone to Amazon. I tried to get used to the missing features but in the end just hated the handsets. It's very unfortunate that Uniden appears to be lowering the price point on their phones by sacrificing features and conveniences that some of us are willing to pay for. I bought the Dect 3080-3 instead. It's not perfect, but does have more features for about the same price. I will wait until Uniden has a refurbished 2188 base (or better) available and buy it. In case you don't know Uniden allows you to mix and match bases and hansets within a given technology like DECT. - Dect Cordless Phone - Answering Machine - Uniden Cordless Phone - Cordless Phone'

Sd Card Reader - card reader, sandisk

I recently purchased a couple of 8GB SDHC memory cards for my Canon Powershot digital camera. I record both still photos and high quality video on these cards. The Sandisk MicroMate card reader is the perfect means for moving my photo and video files from the camera to the computer for storage and/or editing. Using this tiny unit with the memory card is SO much better than tracking down the camera/computer interface cable and hooking them up for the transfer. This card reader eliminates needing to power up the camera (and running down the batteries) to make the file transfers and you can take as long as you want viewing the photos and video on the card before deciding which ones to move to the hard drive without affecting the camera batteries.

The second great thing about this product was it was actually cheaper than the shipping costs!! Can't beat that. Sandisk MicroMate for SD - Card reader ( SD, SDHC ) - Hi-Speed USB

This is an exceptional value- works great right out of the package (which is important because you don't get any instruction sheet). I bought it because my previous reader wouldn't handle the 2GB cards I bought (or SDHC cards, though I don't have any devices that accept these yet).

Downside: it doesn't plug directly into the frontside USB ports because my Dell didn't leave enough flat space below the ports. A thoughtful redesign might have solved this. It does fit in the ports that come with the flat screen monitor I have but green "activity light" then faces the wrong way (tells you when the card is being accessed and you shouldn't remove the card). Also it would be nice to have an indicator showing which way to insert the card.

Still, for this price it is a bargain.

title says it all. I guess its a bit wide at the base and if you needed to plug it in a USB port next to other ports it could get in the way. Its very thin, which is nice, but in a USB hub or something the width would be in the way...

I'm just nit-picking though. It works just fine...

I bought my wife a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ4K camera with a 8 GB SDHC card so she could take videos without worrying about running out of storage space. The problem with the DMC-TZ4K is that when transferring files with the camera you are limited to USB 1.0 speed.

The Sandisk Micromate SDHC memory card reader is great and now it only takes a few minutes to transfer gigs of pictures and videos instead of an hour.

This is a fast card reader. It's definitely USB2 and improved the speed to download images from my camera greatly. Well worth the 10$ if you have more than 1gb of flash space that you use often! Also allows you to use SD cards as a flash drive if you want to.

This memory card reader is small and compact. The only thing I didn't like about it is the cap that goes over the usb plug. It would be nice if the plug just went and in and out instead of allowing me to possibly lose the cap. Other than that the product is very good.

sandisk micromate SD card reader is a great way to transfer files from your camera to your computer. remove card from camera insert in to sandisk micromate SD card reader then plug it in to your USB port and your files are transfered in no time!

compact : about the size of a matchbook! great price too! I paid $13.17

A simple device; works just like you would expect. Build quality is very solid and qualitative, as is common with SanDisk products; even the tactile nature of the plastic used on this seems really nice to me. The cap that covers the USB connection will snap onto the back as well, and there is a small green light that comes on when a card is inserted. Get this if you have SDHC cards, as they will benefit from the faster transfer speeds this is capable of.

I recently bought a Transcend 4GB SDHC card for my digital camera. My HP PhotoSmart C3180 All-in-One has a built in memory card reader, but it does not support SDHC memory cards, hence the reason for purchasing this. I find it much easier to access my pictures by taking the memory card out of the camera and inserting it into my computer versus hooking the camera up via a cable to the computer. I have two USB ports sitting on top of each other on the front of my computer case and I have no problem at all with hooking up this and another USB cable attached at the same time. The only thing that may bother some users is about 1/3 of the SD card sticks out (it doesn't fully insert into the card reader). No big deal to me, but I guess it could bother some people. All in all a great card reader for the price! - Sandisk - Memory Card Reader - Card Reader - Sdhc'

Blank Media

I've ordered twice from this vendor (total of 3 ten-packs) and have been completely satisfied with the quality of the tape and their prompt shipping. I've used these tapes in my business for multiple projects, shooting on a professional Sony DVcam camcorder. I've had no problems at all. And the price is great, obviously. I'll be ordering more of same from this vendor soon.

NOTE: I have learned through years of experience that with ANY brand of videotape it is wise to "re-pack" the tape before shooting on it, preferably in an edit deck. (In order save on weight & battery consumption, camcorder motors are less heavy-duty than edit deck motors. If you have an edit deck, save your camera the wear and tear.)

"Re-packing" is simply a matter of fast-forwarding the fresh tape all the way to the end, the rewinding it to the beginning. This rewinds (or "re-packs") the videotape with a 'normal' tension that is not too tight for the motor of one's camcorder.

Rarely, but sometimes the high-speed manufacturing process can result in tape being wound so tightly that that minor tape speed fluxuations (or tape stretching - ouch!) can result when using a camcorder for recording on tapes that one has not re-packed. Again, this is something I recommend for any brand of mini-DV tape, from any vendor, at any price. Happy shooting! JVC MDV60ME10P Mini DV Tape (10 Pack)

Clogged heads are caused by mixing TDK or Sony tapes with any other brand. Their formulation is different. Don't do it. Use only TDKs or Sonys in your machine or you can mix Panasonic, Maxell, JVC, Fuji, or Canon brands together. Those brands are all the same formulation.

These JVC (I bought Japan labeled "Victor" brand) are made by Fuji and work great.

Just received my 2nd order of the JVC MDV60ME 10 pack of mini DV from Amazon.com. This is the best value I have found for high quality mini DV tape. They work great in my Canon Optura Xi. Vivid color with good contrast. Excellent audio. Will reorder when again in need.

After searching high and low for a good deal on tapes, this is the best deal at about $2.70 per tape incl. shipping!!

I have used JVC tapes before and these are as good as ones I got before from retail stores.

Am ready to purchase my 2nd set of JVC 10 pack tapes, have not had a single bit of trouble,( no clogged heads here),have stayed only with this brand on my JVC recorder. Will most likly always stay with this superior brand.

I've had issues with other tapes(fujifilm), these tapes work great for HDV, only 1 dropout so far on the 4 tapes that I have used so far, compared to 1 dropout every 7 minutes with fujifilm. a great product and I will be reordering soon

I use these tapes in my JVC HD110 with a DTE Focus enhancement drive recording 720p HDV. The tapes are a backup and are for archive. In the situations where it was too hot for the DTE drive these tapes where my only source that would record in 115'f+ days. I would find maybe 1 drop out every two tapes, audio and video seemed on par with the digital data I would get from the DTE drive. So for most purposes I'm sold on these tapes. If you were you shooting your own project or a higher paying gig I would move up to the ProHD JVC tapes for $9 a piece, but for general use and lowering paying gigs, these tapes are perfectly fine.

I also would NOT mix Sony and JVC tapes. It still seems to be true the lubricants in the tapes between brands do no like each and react with each other on your recording heads and you will get a "Dirty head, use clean tape" message in any camcorder if you mix brands a lot. With these tapes, I clean my heads perhaps every 100+ tapes. If I mix Sony and JVC, I have to clean after maybe 20 tapes or less. So stick with 1 brand if you can, and definatly ALWAYS have a newer tape cleaner tape in your bag for just in case situations.

I have used sony, panasonic and JVC brand of mini-dv tapes and I can find no difference among these brands, maybe except the price.

It is non-sense to say one DV tape offer better color/picture than the other... IT IS ALL DIGITAL!!! As long as your camcorder can write and read back the same 1 & 0 on the tape you will be just fine!

I have not try re-using tapes so I can't say how "durable" the tapes are. My opinions is one should not re-record more than 3 times on the same type, and this JVC tape should hold up to the challenge.'

Receipt Scanner - scanner, scansnap

I did a significant amount of research on small portable scanners. The ScanSnap didn't appear on most of the side by side comparisons on the internet sities, however, I am glad I kept digging and found this gem. It is small, was extremely easy to set up, and works like a charm. All of the features work great, including the duplex scanning, multiple page feed, multiple size documents, color scans. Haven't tried pictures yet, but I am sure they will be just as good. The accompanying software was also very easy to use. Highly recommend this product. Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Deluxe Bundle 600 DPI x 600 dpI Scanner (PA03603-B015)

I've used many scanners over the years and for document scanning you just can't beat the ScanSnap S1300. It is very fast and accurate. I also think the Rack2-Filer software is great. Most of the document scanning I've done in the past has been strictly as PDF's that I've saved and label. The software allows the scanning of more pages of similar documents that can be "filed" in a very logical and easily searched fashion. I did consider the S1500 because I had a lot of documents to scan initially (four full file cabinet drawers of documents)and the S1500 does have a larger capacity ADF but I've found the S1300 does the job quite well. The only drawback to the scanner is that it will not scan a document longer than 14 inches.

After reviewing a number of similar products I chose this one because it said that it could be used on a Mac or PC. Among the other Fujitsu choices I thought about purchasing the one of the 1500's. I did not by the 1500 because you either had to buy one that would work only for PC's or buy the one that worked only on a Mac. I have both platforms at my office and want to go paperless.

It is true that the S1300 works on both platforms. However, I was disappointed to find out that it doesn't have the same software capacity for both. The Mac software seems much more limited than the PC software

I also thought the S1300 would be able to scan folded 17 x 11. I'd read so many reviews but confused that ability with the 1500's.

Its not a bad scanner but in the end if I could I would return the product because it really isn't where I need it to be to make my office move efficiently enough to being paperless. - Portable Scanner - Scanner - Mac - Scansnap'
