Photography - mini tripod, photography

While it cannot replace a tripod, the small and easily portable UltraPod II can fold up to fit in your pocket and goes just about anywhere. When you need stablity for that long exposure or want to get yourself in the photo, this little bad boy is just the ticket. You can bring it into places they don't normally allow tripods, and the velcro strap lets you attach it to fences or trees for more point of view options.

For the price, it is truly a great deal. I humbly think every serious photographer, amerature or pro, should have one. Pedco UltraPod II Lightweight Camera Tripod

I bought this because my Gorilla Pod was too flimsy to hold my Canon Powershot TX1 camera.

I really like this tripod. It is very light, holds your camera very securely. It has nice long legs for added stability, but they aren't too long and can fit into a pocket easily.

The double-elbowed ball-top allows for a huge variety of different positions to mount your camera so it's level, no matter what surface you put it on. No adjusting leg lengths or anything.

The velcro strap can be used to strap this on to a variety of things, like branches or sign posts, etc... And with the swivelling ball elbows, you can actually use this with your tripod strapped onto a vertical or horizontal branch or post. Depending on how you use it, you might have to mount it on the side of the sign post, just experiment a little and you'll get it.

When I ordered this tripod, I though it would be flimsy, since it's made of plastic... but it is quite sturdy, actually. Get this one instead of the original Ultrapod, which is not as stable. I've used this with my Canon A75 and Canon A630, and I can put them in portrait mode without any problems. By the way, if you're going to use this on the floor, better get yourself a camera with a vari-angle LCD!

It's quite a pity that this tripod is not available directly here. But you can do a web search to find it.

I bought this tripod for use with a Nikon D90 + kit lens or other lightweight lenses. The tripod itself is well made, and behaves as advertised. The size of this thing is great. However ...

The tripod can hold camera/lens, but due to its flimsy construction, even minimal movements (such as mirror and shutter movements) result in unacceptble vibrations, even when the camera is triggered by remote control. The two situations where this tripod may still be useful for me are (1) taking very long exposures - shutter-induced vibrations may not play a significant role then, and (2) using the tripod velcroed to some other support - this may work, but I'm a bit worried about entrusting camera to the velcro.

All in all - this tripod is not very useful for the type of camera I'm trying to use it for. It may be useful for significantly smaller cameras.

Lightweight and rugged, it is a good deal. Can be strapped to branch with the Velcro strap. Not a tool for professionals, it really cannot compare with a pro tripod, but it is small, light and folds almost flat. I wish it were made of metal, I can carry an extra pound. If you are going camping with a camera, take this tripod with you.

I bough a fancy $50.00 gorilla pod that you can wrap around things and bend and i could never get a photo with a straight horizon utill i switched to the ultrapod the ridged construction makes it easy to set up (Straight) and shot even if it doesn't look as cool as a bendy pod it works ten times better.

I have had an UltraPod II for six or seven years and during that time it has served me well. Originally I got it to use with a small digital camera which is what most compact tripods are designed for. Lately I have been using it with a full-sized DSLR with absolutely no problems. This is a sturdy, well designed, portable tripod that is great for table top and outdoor use. Normally one uses it by extending the three legs to form the tripod, but it also has a long piece of Velcro that can be wrapped around tree branches, etc. Between the camera screw mount and the tripod is a ball head and ratcheting attachment that make it easy to adjust the camera angle (sorry, you can't pan with this setup). It is light, 4.2 oz, and compact, about 7" x 2" folded. I have absolutely no reservations about recommending this piece of equipment; it is perfect for travel or hiking. I got my UltraPod at Campmor which still seems to have a large selection of UltraPods. - Camera Accessories - Mini Tripod - Tripod - Photography'

Kindle Skins - kindle protection, kindle skins

I have the white Kindle so I wasn't sure how well it will look since the sample picture was of the graphite Kindle. I was extremely pleased on how well it turned out on the white Kindle. The skin's design matches perfectly with the white buttons, in fact, it makes them pop out more.

The DecalGirl skin comes with several easy steps on how to put the skin on, more or less a common sense approach. Something I would also recommend doing before putting the skin on is to use scotch tape to clean the surface of the Kindle. It can pick up the tiny dust particles that a regular soft cloth would not be able to pick up.

UPDATED 10/18/2010 - I ADDED SOME PHOTOS (UNDER CUSTOMER IMAGES) TO SHOW WHAT THIS SKIN WILL LOOK ON A WHITE KINDLE. DecalGirl Kindle Skin (Fits 6" Display, Latest Generation Kindle) Her Abstraction (Matte Finish)

I love pink and love how girly it made my Kindle 3 look! It doesn't leave finger print smudges and it livens up the Kindle with color and cool designs! If you don't like pink, there's plenty of other colors and styles by this make!

First of all, this product was exactly what I expected it to be. Those reviews that complain about it must not be familiar with the concept of skins. Yes, they are just pretty stickers that you apply to electronics. They make them personal, and do offer protection from scratches and dings, but not from being dropped or banged around hard.

I ordered this to arrive right after my K3 that I got for Christmas. When it arrived, I was excited! It was a bit more "cartoony" in person, as another reviewer said. One of the swirls that just looks pink is actually a line of hearts, and that was a disappointment for me. I decided I could live with the hearts and went to apply the skin. Unfortunately, my skin had not been laser cut from the background. Instead the entire piece was solid and couldn't be applied (obviously). I repackaged it and returned it to Amazon. I also contacted customer service at Decal Girl to ensure that it was truly defective, and she assured me it was. This cover was out of stock at Amazon, as were most of the other designs I liked. I ended up purchasing the Tweet Light pattern directly from Decal Girl, since I didn't love this print in person. Hopefully when it arrives it will be cut properly and my K3 will be pretty in no time!

For some reason when i ordered this i thought it was a cover to protect my Kindle. When i recieved it and opened it i was kinda in what is this mode..:)I looked at it and after reading the directions realized it had adhesive on the back.I said ok I'll give it a try,I followed the directions and within 2 to 3 mins.it was on and I now have a very distinctive looking Kindle .I ordered the (Her abstraction in pink) it really dressed it up and i LOVE It!!!!! Now it's not just the little black pad laying around, i can easily spot where i put it down...Thanks Amazon!!!

This is a one-use only cover. It will NEVER fit over the little round keys properly. Any attempt at moving it, if it has set for more than a moment, will result in its stretching out of shape and tearing. Sure, it's attractive, but the materials are not as advertised, it won't reposition well, if at all. I'd ask for my money back, but I feel sorry for them. Nice try. I think they should make a separate, smaller piece for over the keypad. I had to take the front piece off after a couple of months of it annoying the dickens out of me bec. it would NOT sit properly over the keypad, made typing klunky, and collected junk where it gapped and the adhesive was exposed. If you spill coffee or crumbs into your keypad, it will still get damaged or gunky with this thing on it, so don't bother.

I purchased this based on the pictures on the site. When I received the skin I was very disappointed. It looked very cheap and didn't stick to the kindle very well. I thought it would protect the screen. It doesn't. The skin covers the front and back except the buttons and the screen. Keep your money, it's not worth it.

Do not buy this product, its a film that you would have to use an exacto knife to cut out each button, and there isnt even a marking for where the buttons should be. This is stupid engineering!! Its definetly not worth the money. FRAUD DO NOT BUY Im extremely unhappy with product! - Decalgirl - Kindle Skins - Kindle Protection - Kindle Accessory'

Engagement Rings - celtic jewelry, jewelry

I bought this ring for my teenage daughter for Valentine's Day and she absolutely loves it! She also loved the box that it came in. She wears it to school and just about everywhere. On the rare occasion that she isn't wearing it I like to borrow it for myself. The delivery was fast and the ring is of great quality. I am very satisfied with the product and Gem Avenue. Heart Cut Clear Cubic Zirconia 3mm Solitaire Band .925 Sterling Silver Ring Size 5

Gem Avenue did a wonderful job of getting this item to me in tip-top condition! I love the little box it comes in, and I know my girlfriend will love it to! I may have ordered it a bit small, but if so, I'll get another and she can keep them both! A great job and two thumbs up to Gem Avenue for speedy delivery, great packaging, and amazing craftsmanship!

I purchased this ring as a travel ring, and I must say, I absolutely love this ring. It doesn't look or feel fake, and actually sparkles almost like a real diamond under the light. I received a four-prong ring, instead of the six prong shown in the picture, but that is hardly an issue to me, the ring is gorgeous.

The only problem I had with this ring is that there were bits and pieces of fluffy material, sort of like tissue paper wedged under the prongs. It's not obvious, but on closer inspection, it's definitely there.

I'm so pleased with this ring that I've went and purchased one in pink and aquamarine as well!

I ordered this ring as a gift and I loved it! I wear it constantly and get lots of compliments! It does get a little dull over time and the heart on my ring was actually a little crooked! But this is hardly noticeable when I'm wearing the ring. The stone also shows no sign of falling out!

Hi there i bought the ring for my finace and she was so happy that i bought the ring for her is trying to get use to it, and i am going to buy my wedding from GEMS. It looks like the picture Exactly and is perfect for the engagement ring or a gift for any holiday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SHE LOVED IT

My daughters eyes lite up so very bright when she put this ring on. She hasn't taken it off since putting it on her finger. It is beautiful. Very nice and shiney. High quality. This item was sent in a very pretty box and she keeps the box beside her bed. It is just perfect. I highly recommend Gem Avenue. Great items, super fast shipping, and no nonsense like with a lot of online purchases. The items are exactly as described. This seller is honest, informative, and very nice. I will purchase other items from Gem Avenue as this item was exactly as described. Thanks for making my daughters eyes shine. Joy - Sterling Silver - Celtic Jewelry - Ring - Jewelry'

Image Stabilization - vr, 55-200mm

This lens is sharp even at wide apertures, the VR (image stabilization) works great, autofocus speed is more than acceptable, and it it is very light and compact. The fact that it costs $250 and has effective VR is pretty amazing - no other company offers a lens with this feature for anywhere near this price.

As for image quality, search the various internet photo sites, such as dpreview and nikonians for sample photos taken with this lens by real users. The results are impressive! My copy produces similar results. The previous reviewer must have a bad sample.

Of course, the lens is slow (like almost all consumer zoom lenses), in that its widest aperture is smaller than a professional zoom or prime lens, so it's not a good choice for action photography in lower light conditions (like indoor sports without flash or outside sports at dusk). But a fast telephoto zoom will cost at least three times as much and weigh a ton.

I give the lens 5 stars based on a combination of image quality, value, and compactness/lightness. Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR [Vibration Reduction] Nikkor Zoom Lens

I had the 55-200mm non VR version for about 5 months, sold it to essentally recover my cost, and bought the VR version as a replacement. The non VR version was very compact and light, and produced excellent photos, but the slightly larger VR version is so much more usable I don't miss the other lens at all. The VR works as advertised and allows me to take pictures at 3 times or more lower shutter speeds than the non VR version. While I would love the 18-200mm VR for the convenience, I will never be able to justify the $750 price, so my 18-55mm kit lens and this lens will likely cover my needs as long as I own my camera. I also seriously considered the 70-300mm VR, but couldn't accept twice the price for only 50% more reach. And at twice the length of the 55-200mm non VR version, it would be too awkward for me to carry around. I am very satisfied with this 55-200mm VR lens and if you are considering it, please give it a try. You will not be dissapointed.

My Nikon ownership goes back over 30 years to the days when cameras were made of metal and carrying one with a few lenses tested your stamina.

Times sure have changed. There's hardly a metal camera to be found and you can carry a bag full of equipment in one hand. The Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Zoom Nikkor is the latest lightweight from this heavyweight of the camera industry.

Plastic construction right down to its lens mount. This thing looks and feels like the label should say Fisher Price and not Nikon. However, looks can be deceiving as I soon found out.

My only reason for buying this lens was that I needed to fill a void in my kit until I saved up enough for a 70-200mm f2.8. I had no intention of keeping the 55-200 VR once the 70-200 arrived.

After shooting with the 55-200 for a few months I've come to appreciate what it can do. It's limited to use in good light as even VR can't change the laws of physics. In this case, it's not even the current VR-II but the original VR that Nikon developed a few years ago.

With sufficient light and good technique, the 55-200 is capable of very good performance. No, it's not as sharp and contrasty as the 70-200. It's also not going to survive the bad weather or a few solid knocks that professional use would expose it to.

Where the 55-200 excels is in its portability and above average performance. For travel or just walking around, it would be hard to beat this lens if it's used within its limits. I use mine on a D80 and have no problem getting excellent 13x19" prints.

As an added bonus, it works very well with the Nikon CL3T closeup lens and does double duty as a macro zoom. Again, it's not a substitute for a real macro zoom like the Nikon 70-180, but it's not intended to be.

Given my original opinion of this lens, I have to admit that I've gotten much more than my money's worth out of it. Instead of selling it, I'm going to keep it and use it when my 70-200 is just to big and heavy to carry around.

If you're on a budget or just want a nice, lightweight lens in this range, take a look at the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR. Like me, you may be very much surprised at what it can do.

If you looking for something relatively inexpensive and fun to carry around, this is the lens for you. Quality is good in good light, most of the time, and can be exceptional sometimes. The plasticy feel doesn't bother me because I avoid carrying around a hunk of metal.

The VR works like a charm in good light.

However, I've noticed softness (at all apertures) often enough where I would not use this lens for any professional work. For example, the Nikkor 180 f/2.8 blows this lens away in quality of manufacture and resulting photos.

I've also noticed softness and noise in almost all of my night photos using this lens, even with a very heavy tripod and no wind.

The focusing system on the lens also is slow as molasses. I tried to capture the Blue Angels flying low over the homes in my neighborhood (an awesome annual occurence), and each shot was blown as the lens hunted for focus. Plenty of good light for high shutter speeds (midday, 1/2500s at f/4), but by the time the lens was focused, the subject had moved so far the photo was blown.

If you want to have fun and need a good lens, buy this one. If you are a professional or OBAM (obessessed amateur), save for the higher quality lenses because you'll be disappointed.

I wish more people would objectively weigh the positives and the negatives in their reviews so that those considering buying this lens can make an informed decision. While this is a very good lens on a tight budget, this is not a great lens directly compared against other similar (and more expensive) lenses. - Vr - Nikkor - 55-200mm - Lens'

Flash Drives - flash drives, 16 gb flash drive

This is a great little piece of machinery. It's straightforward, functional, and--what can I say?--truly cute. It's one of the teeniest USB flash drives I've ever seen, and for me, that's a good thing. I needed a USB drive that could fit into the back port of my Xbox 360 (the original white Arcade model), and the HP v165w does the trick beautifully. It also works great as a storage device for your computer.

Here's a breakdown of its features:

>> The package

The v165w comes in a thin, minimal-plastic package that looks exactly like the container shown on the product photos. It's basically a plastic holder sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard. Nice to look at, hard to open (just like most electronics packaging). Inside, you get the actual USB drive and a tiny lanyard similar to something you'd find on a cell phone charm. No other instructions or slips of paper are included (not that they're needed).

The back of the packaging lists the following system requirements:

- Windows and Mac compatible

- Operating systems supported:

Windows: 2000, XP, Vista, 7

Mac OS: 10.3 or later. USB 2.0

>> It's tiny!

This is a very small USB drive, which can be good or bad depending on your needs or tendency to lose small things. The entire drive could almost fit on a U.S. quarter, meaning it can go all the places a quarter can: a pocket, a wallet, or underneath the sofa cushion. With the lanyard, you can easily hang it from your cell phone as an ultra-techie decorative charm. It won't crowd your keys, either. If you're a person who needs some on-the-go storage available at all times, this ultra-portable drive won't let you down.

The translucent blue covering is a great color, too. With its sleek, concave styling, it's almost reminiscent of a bite-sized blue Xbox 360, which brings me to my next topic...

>>It plays well with the Xbox

The v165w is one of the few USB drives that actually fits into that secret USB port at the back of most original Xbox 360 models. It also fits quite nicely in the front two ports, if you prefer to use those. It's small enough that it'll fit snugly without sticking out of any of the ports, and yet you can pull it out if need be.

The great news is that it passes Microsoft's performance tests with flying colors. Once I formatted it for my Xbox--a total of 14.5 GB were available--I got the thumbs-up that this USB drive met specifications. Awesome!

Update Nov. 30, 2010:

It seems some people have been having problems with the 4GB version of this USB drive when using it for Xbox data storage. I wanted to come back and say that I have not encountered any problems with my 16GB drive at all. Since this drive is supplementary to an official Xbox hard drive I have on the system, I don't keep any vital data like my profile or current game saves on this 16GB USB. I do, however, save all my videos to it, and I'm able to play back all videos without a hitch. I've also put old game saves and downloadable content on the USB without any issues. My recommendation is to use this drive as a companion to your official Xbox hard drive in order to free up space on your primary HD. Likewise, I suggest keeping the USB connected to the system if you decide to use it that way, so the Xbox continually recognizes it as a data storage device.

Since I haven't tested the other sizes of this USB, I can't accurately review them. But I continue to recommend the 16GB version of this USB drive as supplementary Xbox 360 storage.

>>It plays well with computers

Before commissioning the USB stick for Xbox storage, I tried it out with my computer. I was happy to see that the v165w is a straightforward storage device with no hidden or extraneous software pre-installed. You pop it in, wait a few seconds for your computer to recognize it, then open up the folder to find 15.1 GB of fresh space waiting to be filled. Beautiful.

I'm not a speed maven, so I didn't do any special speed tests with transferring large files and such. I will say that it seemed as quick as other USB drives I've used--maybe even quicker.

The v165w also works perfectly across Windows and Mac platforms. Files saved on one operating system are easily recognized by the other.

>>Things to note

* This USB drive comes with a cap, meaning the cap can be lost or misplaced. It fits very snugly on the drive, though, so it shouldn't come off on its own.

* There are no LED lights or other indicators to let you know the drive is running. This is understandable, because the whole point of the v165w is portability. Still, it's something to keep in mind.

* You get 15.1 GB of computer storage and 14.5 GB of Xbox storage because the Xbox uses up about 500MB for storing settings and other hidden data once it formats the drive.

>>Closing comments

Overall, I love this tiny drive! It's cute, straightforward, and ultra-portable. It works with my computer and my Xbox, and it fits in all the places I need it to fit. Highly recommended for folks who want something small and powerful. I'm still amazed they could pack a whole 16GB (15.1GB, really) onto something so tiny. It's great! Digital Camera - kingston, sd card

There are some things to consider before buying this particular card or any other 32gb SDHC card on the market:

1. This is NOT an ideal card for a digital SLR like a D80, D90, Rebel XT, etc... That is because it is a class 4 device. The class of a SDHC cards has to do with how fast they read and write files, not how much storage they have. For a digital SLR, you should purchase a class 6 SDHC card most of the time. Class 6 cards will allow you to take 'bursts' of photos and not be limited by the card's capacity to write them. Also class 4 cards are slower reading data, meaning they will take longer to upload files to your computer. Upload speed is convenient, especially when loading large batches of files.

2. This card has far more storage than most people will need for their digital camera. Unless you like to keep all your photos on a SDHC card and never move them to your computer, or are a high volume photographer, there is very little need for more than about 8gb of storage space for most caeras. The possible exception to this is if you have a professional SLR that shoots files in the 16-20mb range--but if you do, you'll likely want a class 6 card anyway. If all you intend to use this card for is a digital camera, save yourself a lot of money and buy a PNY 8GB SDHC Card. If you're worried about running out of space on a vacation, buy a few of them. Otherwise you run the risk of having 'all your eggs in one basket.' If one card fails, you lose all your pictures instead of only a portion of them.

This card is fantastic for use in a video camcorder capable of writing to an SDHC card. (Check with the manual first to insure that a class 4 card will be fast enough first). It is also perfect as extra storage for an ultra portable computer or net book like the Asus EEE pc. Another great application would be as added storage to a personal media player or MP3 player equipped with a SDHC slot such as the Cowon D2.

There are other good 32gb SDHC cards on the market, some at cheaper price points than the Kingston card. IMHO, brand matters very little with something like a SDHC card, since they all are made pretty much the same way. None of the brands currently offering them (Transcend, PNY, Kingston) have high fail rates with their other products, so I believe they are all pretty similar. What you decide to buy will depend on whether you trust a particular brand, or who has the lowest price. All of them will work equally well. Kingston 4 GB Class 4 SDHC Flash Memory Card SD4/4GB

PREFACE:

I bought this card for extra disk space on my Asus EeePC netbook. I needed as much space as possible to supplement the very small SSD hard drive. I needed something with large capacity and relatively fast file transfer time.

PROS:

It shares the largest SD capacity on the market today with few others (Panasonic, Sandisk, and PNY) and is a quality name that I have had a good history with in the past. Its file transfer time is similar to the SSD drive in my machine so it basically acts as a second SSD for me at less than a quarter of the price!

CONS:

Its not the cheapest 32gb SD card(PNY) nor the fastest(Panasonic) but its good quality with a decent transfer rate.

CONCLUSION:

I'm very happy with its performance and capacity. I would like to see the price come down a bit, but that's the price of getting electronics of this caliber.

That's my input, take it or leave it :)

Excellent for the price. I give it a 4/5 because it performs slower than expected from a C4 SDHC card. I also have a Sandisk EIII 2GB. Although it doesn't have the class ratings because it's not SDHC, the Sandisk outperforms the Kingston in both read/write.

My test scenario: Using a Nikon D80 taking 6 shots continuously. The Kingston took considerably longer to write contents from the Nikon D80 buffer.

If you're looking for a high speed card in a similar scenario, then look elsewhere. However, if you want a good card and no particular need for speed, then I recommend getting.

I didnt realize how fast the point and shoot cameras are getting sooo many megapixels until I started looking for a good one for my mom... This card is no good for a 12 megapixel camera! It takes way too long to save each picture slowing down how fast you're able to take consecutive pictures! Go for the Sandisk extreme cards and dont look back!

I only have SLR cameras, and use the San Disk extreme cards because speed is crucial! Dont cheap out on a card after buying a nice camera, or you'll be sorry! Thats the first thing i noticed when showing her how to use her new Canon Point and Shoot camera is how SLOWWWWWWWW it took to save each photo before I could take another.. If waiting a few seconds between each picture is a non-issue, buy all means save some money and buy this card.

Bottom line: You're wasting your money buying this card to use in a high resolution point and shoot, which they all seem to be now days. Just too slow! - Kingston - 4gb - Sdhc - Sd Card'

Kitchen Scale - kitchen scale, coins

This scale is a great value for the .01 gram precision it offers. Once calibrated it is quite sensitive and accurate. Mine came quite far from calibrated, but based on the other reviews here it appears this is only a fluke. The scale is lightweight and very portable, being roughly the same size as a Nintendo DS Lite. Build quality is good; it looks like it will last a long time if used properly and carefully. Comes with two AAA batteries and a space for storing a pair of extras. Very nice scale for the price.

One hint about calibration: if you forget to buy the 100g calibration weight, you can simply use 20 U.S. nickels, as each nickel is exactly 5g.

I purchased this exact scale from this seller for reloading. Its important to have .1grain resolution, as is advertised. It does not, its .2grain. Contacted seller (scales n tools) they said that it was a manufacturing change and offered to take it back. Fair enough. They still havent changed the ad on here though, so they are purposely misleading people with false advertising.

I've had this scale for a couple years, and I'm very happy with it. It's accurate, repeatable +/- 0.02 grams on different days, and has held up through moderate handling (nothing abusive, but stuff that I'd never put my lab scale through).

It uses what I call a "floating zero". This is good and bad... When within 0.03 grams of zero and steady, it displays 0.00 and slowly adjusts its zero. If you slowly add 0.01 grams at a time, you can get it to drift way off, and when you eventually take off all the weights at once, it'll display -0.20 grams or whatever their weight was. The good is that the scale, despite its inexpensive mechanism, keeps very good zero calibration between measurements. The downside is that it makes small measurements difficult. If you want to weigh out 0.15 grams of powder, you can't just tare your weigh paper and then gradually pour it on - the zero will drift unless you add the first 0.05 grams quickly enough. Instead, you can NOT tare it, and manually subtract the weigh paper.

This feature is not a problem at all unless you're weighing very small (less than 0.1 grams) items on a regular basis. I think this is an acceptable compromise for a pocket scale of this precision at this price (and it's practically standard until you get to much more expensive equipment), so I am not marking any points off. - Pocket Scale - American Weigh - Kitchen Scale - Coins'
