Science Fiction - amnesia, ben affleck

Every now and then a movie passes by me and I totally dismiss it out of lack of interest. Paycheck was one of those. When it was first released, It didn't sound all that great, so I ignored it. Then by chance I came across a DVD of this movie and decided to watch it. What a surprise! This is now one of my favorite sci-fi movies. Had I known that it was based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick, I might have paid more attention to begin with. Especially since he was the author of Minority report and Blade Runner (under the written title of "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"). One of the most outstanding things about this film is that there is no bloody gore, no sex, and not a lot of strong language. It is very fast paced, filled with action and suspense, great acting, and includes some of todays finest actors. I thought it one of Uma Thurman's best performances, and Ben Afflick was at his best. I would highly recommend this DVD (which also has some great bonus materials) to anyone who is a Sci-fi fan and loves action movies, because it is both. An excellent movie! Paycheck (Special Collector's Edition)

One always has great hope for a film script with Philip Dick parentage, but this film was a disappointment. John Woo is a talented director, but he is completely unsuited for this sort of film. The dark paranoiac style in Philip Dick's writing has not been used to greatest advantage in film except in 'Blade Runner', which ironically did not cling closely to the story, however, 'Paycheck' pushes alienation from the spirit of the story to new heights. Neither does 'Paycheck' show the humor or spirit, director Woo's films are famous for, leaving Paycheck's unnecessary and out of place chase scenes feeling like a death mask of a John Woo film.

From a performance perspective, Affleck and Thurman are ill matched romantically, with this casting choice made worse by director Woo's decision to play up the romantic aspects of the film. The supporting actors, particularly Aaron Eckhart turn in a strong performance however.

Despite the poor directing, miserable and underdeveloped script, lack of strength as either an action, or science fiction film, and an unhappy "near future" look that looks only Hollywoodish and phony, Paycheck is not a genuinely awful film, and someone satisfied with a generic commercial movie might not be too severely disappointed. I would not recommend purchasing this movie to anyone with a limited DVD purchase budget however.

I think people are being too critical of this film. It is very fun, and I thought it had a clever story line. You will be on the edge of your seat with it. If you watch this movie with the intent of entertainment, then you will really enjoy it. Just don't try and over analyze the science depicted; remember, it is just for fun. At the price Amazon has it for, it is worth owning if you are a movie collector.

The audio/video quality is very good too.

It seems this film's reputation may be suffering from incorrect genre identification. This is an ACTION drama with a futuristic twist. John Woo says the original story was SciFi, but he took "80% of that out" so he could make a more believable movie. (Perhaps it would've received kinder reviews if he'd left more in.) The characters ARE developed well enough to create interest & empathy. Perhaps not successful as SciFi, "Paycheck" is a decent action flick.

The actors all do an excellent job of staying real & interesting, but nobody goes over the top. Woo intentionally spreads the focus among the ensemble rather than making another Star-Driven vehicle. Oh, there are stars, and the villains do get edgy for sure; but there are no scene-stealing overacted performances. That's just fine - some of us just do not need to be visually assaulted by acting style in order to enjoy a performance. Ben Affleck continues in his understated 'regular guy' mode. Uma Thurman, fresh from her 'Kill Bill' gig, looks smart & tough, and that's exactly how she acts. If anybody in this cast does a very polished job with the action itself, it's her - BUT it's very believable & in character. She just may have become THE leading lady for sincere & skilled action. The supporting cast is excellent, the action is generally slugfest 'NFL' style instead of 'martial arts masters', and the principals do most of their own stunts.

The premise is handled in a believable way (much better than the typical time-travel stories which unravel) with well done tech-FX. Chases, explosions & other stunts abound, but don't overpower the story. The action is REAL live action, mercifully not blue-screen CGI overdone to death. (OK, there are 1 too many "mexican standoffs.")

The characters actually develop & portray relationships that don't require a lot of screaming, cursing & nudity to convey. Wow. Some of us LIKE that. John Woo did it that way on purpose, with homage/respect (= PROPS) to great films & directors who created memorable classics that way. It even bears repeated viewings. Hmm, wish there was a genre for THAT.

Paycheck is a pretty good scifi/action movie if you can turn off the logical part of your brain and ignore plot contrivances and bad guys that couldn't hit the broad side of a barn when they shoot. I'm like anybody else in that I wish Hollywood would do better, but until they do, I enjoyed this movie. Ben Affleck plays an engineer who takes jobs that result in him having his memory of what he did erased at the end. He takes on a 3 year project for an old friend thinking of the massive payday when its over. When the project is over he discovers he has signed away his rights to the money and left himself an envelope of seemingly useless objects instead. He uses the objects to piece togeher the mystery of just what he did for the last 3 years. The movie is at its best in the first half as you try along with Affleck to figure out what's going on. The second half humps up the action and the number of bullets that never find their target. Uma Thurman plays the love interest but isn't given all that much to do, nor is Paul Giamatti as a trusted friend. As for Affleck, I'm bored with this "let's all hate Ben Affleck" cult that has grown in the last few years. Will he win an Oscar? No, but his performance here was fine. No other actor would have done any more with the script as written. - Action - Amnesia - Ben Affleck - Uma Thurman'

Cooler Master - cooler master, thermal compound

This thermal paste worked as advertised and I found it easy to apply.

The only problem was the so called mask sheet that is a total pain in the rump.

Toss the mask sheet and if you are that particular, use some good masking tape to

block it in. The masking sheet is way to sticky and is more trouble than it is worth.

Since I have not tried to remove a processor after a long period of time using this paste, I cannot say if it will actually stay pliable over a long period of time (years). From my experience, some paste/adhesives used are a total pain when trying to remove the heatsink/fan assy. Cooler Master High Performance Thermal Paste - (HTK-002-U1)

The little strip of thermal paste that came with a replacement heat sink for my laptop was garbage. The old cooling fan burned out because it was running overtime. The replacement fan was still running at top speed whenever it was on, so I ordered this. The CPU is now running substantially cooler. Before, the air coming out of the back of the laptop was just a bit warm, now that the heat is being transferred to the heat sink properly, it feels much hotter. The only problem I found was that there was no included template for laptops, so I had to make my own. Not a big deal, just a bit of a pain.

I bought this thermal paste, thinking it was the silver type. It was the same CPU paste you can buy at Radio Shack for under $4. It appears to be water based silicone compound. I do not think you'll be happy.

I bought this hoping to have a larger syringe. The capacity is normally advertised in grams, but this says 8 ounces. 8 ounces is very little paste and I needed alot of it for testing and removing heatsinks on chips. If you need alot of this stuff, get the cooler master icefusion jug for better value.

This product works to ensure good thermal conductivity between a CPU and its Heat Sink. It is a composite of various metal oxides, hence its white color. It is designed to be easily applied correctly.

What's in the package:

- Thermal Compound

- Socket Template Stickers (2: for sockets A, 370, 7 and socket 423)

- Compound Applicator/Spreader

Instructions:

Very comprehensive, given in a step by step method, easy to follow.

Properties:

- Resists changes in consistency up to 177 degrees C

- Viscosity: Non flowing

- Specific Gravity: 2.37

- Dielectric Constant: 4.4 at 100kHz

- Volume Resistivity: 5.0 x 10 to the 15 power

- Dissipation fctor: 0.02 at 100KHz

- Dielectric Strength: 550 volts/mil; 21.7 kV/mm

- Thermal Conductivity: 0.8 watts/meter

This product, because of its compositon, should not be touched, and it should be kept out of the reach of children.

The thermal paste worked extremely well, and I used it multiple times to achieve cooler CPU temperatures, and found myself reapplying it even to my friends CPU's to help them with temperature problems. I highly recommend it to anyone.

I tried this based on some of the reviews, the price and drop in temperatures mentioned. I used this termal paste to replace the dried up paste on my new video card which had an oversized heat sink. It lowered the temperature by about 2-4c. I ended up getting an after market cooler. I think that will be my solution on my next card as well, if I cannot use my current cooler or maybe try the artic silver products. - Cooling - Thermal Compound - Cooler Master'

Propane Adapter - camp stoves, camping

I have an earlier version of this adapter from Century Tool. It has a thumb wheel needle valve that gives fairly precise control of the flame, but the earlier version is unregulated, and so requires periodic tweaking of the control to maintain a constant flame size. That's not as bad as it sounds, because most camp cooking is hands-on with frequent heat setting changes anyway, and one doesn't tend to leave pots on camp stoves to simmer for hours. The tube is steel and the orifice at the tip is yellow brass. There's an extension spring with a hook end that extends to grab the sheet metal of your Coleman stove to keep the adapter from falling out. (Original Coleman liquid fuel tanks hook into the front of the stove and so don't need such a spring.)

I've been using my adapter with a Coleman Model 424 2-Burner Dual Fuel(tm) Standard Compact Stove (Coleman fuel/white gas or unleaded auto gas) for about 10 years, effectively turning it into a Triple Fuel stove. The adapter accepts 1 lb disposable propane cylinders, or can be connected to a bulk propane cylinder by means of a hose, available here at Amazon.com and many camping/outdoor gear suppliers.

The only drawback I've found is that the adapter tends to sag and put pressure on the burner bowl. The hole in the front of the stove through which the gas generator tube from the liquid fuel tank passes is a vertical oval, a bit oversize, and allows the propane adapter a fair amount of angular play, more than it needs. When the stove is going full blast, the bowl gets red hot and softens, and the weight of the adapter tube plus disposable propane cylinder warps the bowl into a saddle shape. It doesn't harm the usability of the stove, but it looks a bit unsightly. I took the time today to remove the burner bowl, placed it on a fire brick and heated it to cherry-red with an acetylene torch equipped with a heating tip; I then pressed the bowl with a piece of heavy aluminum plate, returning it to near-factory condition. Afterward, I used a piece of 1/8 inch brazing rod (yellow brass) to fashion a clip that hangs on the front edge of the Coleman stove and supports the Century Tool propane adapter so that the tube doesn't touch the burner bowl. My clip design allows the stove grate to be lifted in the usual way for cleaning and stowage of the liquid fuel tank and various accessories. The clip now gets tossed into the stove along with the propane adapter and will go wherever the stove goes. Problem solved! Century® Propane Stove Regulated Converter

Strong, well made unit. This thing is not rocket science, but it works. now my Coleman stove can use Coleman fuel, kerosene, gasoline and propane. I use this to modify the stove for use with 1lb cylinders, but I also have a tank adapter and hose that will allow me to use this stove with the larger (40 lb?) tanks. I like options and this gives me a couple more.I had an old converter that my father bought 40 years ago and it still works, but I wanted a new one. The Century converter is heaver that the old one and the control knob does not take as many turns to open/close. Very happy with it.Fast delivery, good product, great company to do business with. What else can you want?

If you own a white fuel or duel fuel stove don't leave home without this item.

I have a damn near mint condition Coleman Duel Fuel Powerhouse that was headed right for the scrap metal bin before I gave this thing a try and it saved me from purchasing a new PROPANE Unit... I've been camping for over 30 years and while I grew up on liquid fuel stoves... They DO have problems... Problems that will drive you nuts at dinner time when you are in the wilderness, 500 miles away from your garage, tools and workbench... This item, thrown in as a back-up devise could have saved my tail numerous times over the years.

It performs exceptionally well as a conversion unit and I have saved both an otherwise perfectly good 414 model stove from the scrap bin as well as a good chunk of change on a replacement stove.

I recently bought 3 Coleman liquid fuel stoves at a thrift store for $10.00. I was able to mix and match parts, and make 2 of the 3 work fine on unleaded gas & Gumout. #3 needs too many parts to be economically repairable, so I decided to take the plunge and order the Century converter.

Guess what? It works! The "generator" tube is even long enough to take the 1 lb. "Fat Boy" disposable tanks, though the 14 oz. slim-line tanks work fine also. Following the instructions on the reverse of the package, fired right up on the first match - excellent flame modulation, easy to start aux. burner. No clue yet as to how long it will burn on a tank. Adapters available on Amazon to either refill the smaller tanks, or run straight off of a 20 lb. bulk tank.

Easier to use than liquid fuel on short camping trips - no cans of fuel, no funnel, no pumping, but all the durability and flexability of your trusty Coleman stove. A great backup/upgrade for your stove.

Very nice add-on to your Coleman white gas stove [fits all 2 and 3 burner types].......

You can now use a disposable 16oz propane cylinder or with a hose adapter you can connect it to your 20 pounder tank...

This is a basically excellent product, and if you have a Coleman gasoline powered stove then you need this adapter. The added flexibility of being able to use propane is very good to have. It does, however have one minor flaw that costs it that 5th star. The knob on the control valve is loose and tends to come off. If Century used a better knob, one that wouldn't come off, then they'd get that 5th star. Other than that it's an excellent product.

I now have three converters. The first has been in use for years. The second one is going on a Coleman 415D (1946), restored just enough to safely operate. The Third one is going on a 425C. Be sure and get the extension hose to use a twenty pound cylinder of propane and carry an extra Green Bottle or two. Also, very useful when camping out at home when the electricity was off for two weeks, in 2004. Jerry Thompson, Lake Butler, Fl. - Camping - Camping Stove - Camp Stoves - Camp Stove'

Dect Cordless Phone - telephone, cordless phones

I bought this to replace an old 5.8 system with poor range.

Initial impressions:

Pros: Good price, clear sound.

Cons: No speed dial, no button to dial phone service voicemail number, screen is small, only way to tell you have a phone service voicemail is a small line on the screen. The latter means you cannot tell from across the room if you have a voicemail from your phone service-you have to pick up the phone and look at it.

Came back as I've discovered more. It is definitely going back.

The voice mail indicator does not come on until after you hit the talk button. Also, the missed call indicator goes out as soon as you put the phone back in the charger. These must be defects.

Other things I do not like: there is no way I've found to change the volume on the ringer on the base station. Also, changing volume on each handset requires a laborious trip through the menu system. Panasonic KX-TG4023N DECT 6.0 PLUS Expandable Digital Cordless Answering System with 3 Handsets

The phones work great. They exhibit excellent battery life and are clear in sound quality. I really love the different ring tones they have. I really like the intercom function from one station to another. Now my wife doesn't need to yell at me from upstairs - she can use the intercom function on the handset.

My only complaint with these phones is the paint they use below some of the buttons. After 2-3 weeks of usage, the paint has completely worn off. The actual buttons stay great, it's only the paint that has disappeared. This is the only phone I have had this happen with. So, as long as you remember the functions of the buttons, and don't need the painted labels, you will be fine.

I was surprised. I have owned panasonic phones and they have been all right. These are junk. One doesn't work. No headphone jack. Sound is bad. Have to click extra to get to caller id list. It was not worth it. I hate these ugly silver phones. Don't do it.

All of the printing on the face of the phone came off in a few weeks and the sound quality was terrible.

Sent it back to Amazon and they charged me 12.00 and I can't get an answer as to why.

Not very happy with either co. right now and will purchase products elsewhere from now on.

We got this phone system for use with another phone system/answering machine to add some extra phones. Our house is two floors so it's nice to have extra phones where you need them. We use Vonage and use their answering service, so I haven't tried the answering machine. One minor complaint is that there is only a small line on the screen to tell you that you've got a message with Vonage's voicemail. Our other phones the Uniden DECT1588-5 Corded / Cordless Phone Combo that I reviewed on 12/30/08 has a flashing red light that tells us when we have calls and is much easier to see from a distance. One other complaint is that the lettering below some of the buttons wears off very quickly, so you have to remember what their functions are. (The numbers on the keys do not wear off.) The screen is a little small and the lettering for the basic functions is rather small.

The thing I like about these phones is the price, which is very reasonable. It has nice ring tones and you can store numbers in the phone book but there isn't any speed dial. The sound and range is very good and they work well with Vonage and the other phone system. We do have to connect the main phone to the modem for Vonage, but the other extensions can go anywhere in the house. I purchased a GE TL96572 25 Foot Dual Jack Phone Cord in order to use the two phone systems on one line out of the modem. We don't have any interference with the other phone lines in the house or with the wireless router and other electronic equipment.

The phone does what we need it to do. We're mainly concerned with the sound, range and battery life which all work well on this phone.

This phone is great in all aspects. If you have any type of wireless router in the house, this phone works amazing. One knock I do have on the phone though is the fact just the black letters on the handsets smudge off within days. So I just decided to take a cloth and wipe them off. Just the words in black. Distance is very good and all calls are clear with Vonage.

These phones are a great value. They seem to work just fine. I love the very basic answering system. Overall, I am happy with this purchase. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a good quality phone system.

After working in a call center, I HATE having a phone. We went without one for years until it was costing us more with our tv package than the basic package for phone service would. Even with the ringers off, when the caller leaves a message, EVERY RECEIVER PICKS UP THE MESSAGE AND PLAYS IT ON THE SPEAKER PHONE! My mother is one that will call and talk to the machine or yes...even the animals and it is so annoying when I am trying to give my girls a bath or have company over to sit and listen to her talk. We have yet to find a way to turn it off.

I returned the phone after using it a week or so. There were 2 reasons for it:

1. The prints on the phone body started disappearing from the touch of the fingers.

2. The readings on the phone display was impossible to see, making it very difficult to identify who was calling.

We could not leave with those 2 problems. - Telephone - Answering Machine - Cordless Phones - Dect'

Xbox 360 Wireless Controller

DO NOT BUY THESE. These are old stock and the batteries are completely dead and will not hold a charge. The only reason they have so many good reviews is because they date back to 2006 when they were actually new stock. Batteries cannot last 4 years without being charged/discharged. Repeat do not buy! Xbox 360 Rechargeable Controller Battery Pack Blue

Bought two of the blue ones. Unboxed 'em, and didn't have a chance to use them. Threw out the packaging.

Then tried them. They don't hold any charge; the controller immediately powers off as soon as it's unplugged.

They're worse than no battery at all, mainly since I paid for these, and could have saved the money. What the hell?

I ordered a blue battery and it was totally defective. I got a replacement from amazon and the replacement was defective too!!!

Then I ordered another replacement and guess what happened?

Amazon told me that all of the blue batteries are broken and they will give me a refund instead of a third replacement!!! I don't know why they sell them if they are all the same.?! To keep hold on some money for a while?

I bought this so I could cut down on wasting batteries. However, to my dismay it does not work. I plugged it in with my charger cable and it says it's fully charged. If I unplug it, my controller shuts off. It can't hold any charge at all. I read some other reviews and saw that multiple people had the same problem. I would say it's best to just avoid this product.

I'm not one to do many reviews, but I felt I needed to write one for this product.

The batteries themselves work fine with constant use. Eventually, they won't hold a charge as well and sooner or later will no longer hold a charge. In the 3 years I've had my Xbox 360, I've gone through 3 of these batteries. The first one took about a year a half to die. The second one (for an additional controller I had) took about the same time. The third one I bought died in about 9 months since I purchased it. What gives?

They refuse to hold a charge! The play and charge kit, as well as the quick charge kit, will immediately note that the batteries are fully charged when you plug them in. They obviously are not.

I have a set of NiMH rechargable batteries that are over 6 years old and they still hold a charge, albeit not as long as they use to.

I understand that Microsoft states the need for replacing these batteries over time... However, why waste the[...]on these when you can buy a set of four really awesome Energizer NiMH rechargable batteries for the same price and can be used on TWO controllers?

the 360 blue battery pack is elegant and useful. It's rare that you'll find both qualities in a product.

The battery life of these packs can give you many hours of uninterrupted gaming on your Xbox 360.

With the play and charge kit, you can play while it charges. With the Quick Charge station, you can charge a battery in about two hours.

The blue model here looks great with any of the controllers.

The Xbox 360 charger only comes with 1 battery. If you play alot you're going to need an extra. There's nothing worse than being in the middle of a great game and your juice runs out. Get this extra battery!!

I have AA rechrgeable batteries....but i also have 3 kids and they seem to disapear. This was an affordable solution to that. The batteries work wonderful. Get the charge and play deal and for around 25 bucks you have a solution for 2 controllers.'

Kindle Reading Light - reading light, kandle

Just received the Kandle and it is a neat, compact design. I already own a Mighty Bright and an M-Edge light, for comparison below.

Pros:

- Very lightweight (partly because of the button batteries).

- Compact, stores nicely.

- Great for a bare Kindle - fits perfectly on the top edge and provides adequate illumination for the screen.

Cons:

- Substantial falloff of light on the bottom half of the Kindle. Sufficient for reading, but a noticeable difference in intensity and could be a strain on old or tired eyes; really noticeable when clipped to a cover.

- Won't work (very well) on a Kindle with a cover that uses straps. I have several M-Edge covers currently, and all are too thick to attach the clip with any stability over cover and Kindle together. Clipping on the folded back puts it too far away to adequately illuminate even the top half of the screen, and clipping it on the Kindle directly between the cover and Kindle stretches the straps and risks damaging the rear skin if your Kindle has one. It does work on Kindle covers with the Amazon-type covers with just the metal spine clips (and no straps), but I avoid those because of potential damage to the Kindle frame (and you should too). Have an Oberon cover coming*, so could be better suited to this design - we shall see; I expect any cover thick enough to protect the Kindle would be too thick to use this light.

- Don't have one, so this is a guess, but based on the K2 results I would think would be marginally (if that ) adequate for a DX - just too much difference in light at the bottom of the screen.

Neutral: Battery life currently unknown, but the button 2032 batteries are more expensive than AAAs and are not rechargeable

For neat, light weight, trim design and compactness, I give the Kandle a thumbs-up. For practical use and good screen illumination on covered Kindles (which I suspect is the majority), the Mighty Bright and M-Edge e-Luminator lights are superior Kindle lights, although not as cool looking!

*Addendum: The light DOES fit on the top (1/4") edge of the Oberon cover over the Kindle, so it is usable, but light falloff on the lower half of the screen is significant. Much less illumination that even the M-Edge light, which is just adequate. Great design, marginal functionality. Kandle by Ozeri LED Book Light for the Amazon Kindle (1st and latest generation), and other eBook readers - in Black

I would've gone with the white Kandle, but I had a Black Kindle cover/skin so I chose this one. Overall, the Kandle is perfect! It feels sturdy enough to just throw it in my pack or put it in my pocket without worrying about it breaking. The 2 LED's provide enough illumation to light up the whole screen without bothering people around you yet at teh same time, lighting up the screen enough for you to be able to easily read. Now, I've read some people complaining about how the light isnt bright enough, or that the light isnt spread out well. In my opinion, those people probably are tryiing very hard to find something to complain about. I found the Kandle to be bright enough; when you're about to read at night, let your eyes adjust to the dark setting, and you'll find the Kandle to provide enough light for you to be able to read everything easily. I've purchased about four other booklights previous to this, and this is my favorite without a doubt.

I Love this Light! I love how it is so small and portable! I travel alot and this is the most practical light for the Kindle I've seen or used- its small, lightweight, portable, durable, and it gets the job done. I'd recommend this for anyone who loves to read at night.

I received this as a present, but after using for a few nights, I loved it! So I bought one for my wife. Now she takes it everywhere she goes. We both agree that the Kandle is a fantastic light that fixes alot of the headaches experienced from other book lights. Overall, the Kandle seems to be a A+ in terms of build quality and design. The clamp is not to tight but not to loose so it fits snugly on the Kindle. It also has nice pads so that it won't scratch. The light is sufficient enough for most situations. I did read a few reviews saying how its not bright enough but my wife and I found the lighting to be perfect. If it was any brighter, it would be like shining a flashlight at people around you while you're reading. I also love the fact that this does not glare, and even if it does it can be easily adjusted. This is a very well-thought product that does what it is supposed to do. I'd recommend this to ANYONE who has a Kindle.

The kandle is downright awesome! I've went through about 5 book lights looking for the perfect light for my kindle, but none of them seemed to be the perfect one. or at least until I bought the Kandle. Other book lights had bad qualities that really out-weighed the benefits, such as hotspots, glare, heavy, portable.... but the Kandle had all the perfect qualities i was looking for and I am glad to say that my exhaustive search is over for the best book light. - Kandle - Kindle Reading Light - Reading Light - Book Light'
