OK, I love this television. It is completely silent, cool running, amazing picture (after adjusting the settings properly) and had all of the features I wanted for a price point that couldn't be passed up.



Pros:

* 3 HDMI ports

* Silent even with my ear right next to the set

* Rotatable stand (my wife hates being off center but her chair is far to the left so she can rotate it to face her)

* Decent speakers (get loud enough but nothing mind blowing but not bad either)

* NO BLUE LEDs, infact when the set is on NO LEDs are on at all. Just a small red one for standby which turns off when the set turns on

* Loads of advanced settings available without having to enter into locked service menus.

* Picture is bright in my opinion (not LED TV bright but more than enough for my needs)

* Price (paid 6 c-notes during Fry's easter deal)

* Super fast response time (no lag at all in any games)

* No real burn-in issues even with games being played (after the first 100hr burn-in time where static images were avoided).

* After calibration great rich blacks.



Neither here nor there:

* Touch sensitive buttons on front panel (cool as hell but can be a bit annoying trying to hit a button in the dark).

* USB video and pictures (don't really use this at all)



Cons:

* No bells and whistles (not a con for me but maybe for others).

* Like any shiny TV glare is an issue.

* Settings out of the box leave something to be desired at best.

* Not 3D (once again I didn't want this but for others this maybe a con).





Now with all of that said, if you don't use a good advanced calibration profile this TV can be pretty off on the picture at points (whites a bit yellow, over saturation on certain colors, dim screen etc.). I used the calibration settings posted by blacknoir at the avsforum and then did the picture wizard to tweak it a bit further and the difference is nothing short of incredible. Crisp whites, excellent contrast, skin is the proper color, etc. This set became by far the most natural looking set I have seen in a long time. Now mind you this natural looking set wouldn't sell in stores next to the heavily over exposed settings they use to catch your eye. It wouldn't help if I talked about all of this without posting my settings for you. So here we go.



If I have any comments or explanations I will post them next to the setting. Also, these will not replace the quality of a professional calibration because all panels are slightly different. That being said this will get you pretty close.

Picture Mode: Expert 1 (Expert 2 is fine as well, these are just 2 slots to store an advanced profile and access the advanced settings)

Contrast: 77 (will likely change after Picture Wizard but this is a good starting point)

H. Sharp: 39 (will likely change after Picture Wizard but this is a good starting point)

Color Temp: W30 (This setting is hidden to find it, click on tint-->you will get the gray bar at the bottom of the screen to adjust tint-->press the down arrow and there it appears

Now comes the IRE part. This part is a bit confusing in how it is implemented. Basically, each time you select an IRE value treat the values below it as a new set of values. Why they did it this way I have no clue. Anyways here are the values (as you will see some are REALLY far off):

There we go. As you can see it will take some work to enter these in. Don't forget after entering these to run the picture wizard to tweak the brightness and contrast and stuff. After all of this you will have an AMAZING lifelike set.



PS: All TVs should have this done because even the best TV makers design their presets to sell the TVs not to have the most natural look (vivid sells in the store but looks like crap at home). LG 50PV450 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

I've owned this plasma for a week now and bought it in the store for $800 plus tax. Im a videophile and am a picky person when it comes to my tv's. This is the 3rd set ive owned in 2 years. The first was an lg 1080p 55 inch, well that's went south quick because fast moving images would become blocky so I took it back. Then I bought a 32 1080p sony LCD and it the picture looked good somtimes but most of the time it had blotchy colors and terrible shadow details no matter what setting you used, then the screen started to band (dark lines on it). Then I went to samsung LED and the back light bleed in all corners ruined movies for me the tech came to fix it and made it worst, took it back the next day.



Ok so I went looking for a new plasma, which ive heard always made movies look better, and plasmas are favorites by most people who watch a lot of movies. Ive always been scared off by the burn in effect. So after a lot of research I got this one the price and picture was I was looking for. I will say this on the picky side of things for movie lover. The 16x9 black bars you see on most films with not be pitch black, they are VERY close but no matter what ya you do they will be a few shades off. They are even in color and it doesn't bother me compared to the LCD/LED ones that are black in the middle and grey on the ends. Also this tv has some sort of Fluid motion tech built into it, much like 120 hz Lcds have it makes the motion more fluid. No plasmas don't need this because they work differently, but LG must think people want movies to look more life like, but the fluid motion ruins movies and makes them look cheap and make the motions look too fast for their own good. My only complaint is I don't know how to turn this feature off. I see a film mode option, but it wont let me select it?????? The image colors are rich and sharp and if you tweak them you will find what your looking for.



It does have burn in protection options, no problems with any burn in, but im careful and dont leave static images on for very long. Now let me give you a heads up on ghosting/ image retention. Sometimes if you leave for ex: a dvd menu with static images on for about 5-10 minutes and then you go to a dark screen you will seen some of that menu still. DONT BE SCARED, this will go away within a minute and is normal, its just the phospers fading away and as soon as another images comes on the screen it washes all the old stuff off, it will NOT effect the pic quality. So after 2 LCDS AND 1 LED I went to plasma and am finally happy with the sturdy quality of the screen and the 600 hz the tv has to offer, no more shuttery images and back light bleed.'

I had purchased the Northern lights mat from Aurorae and was in love with it. I started going to my yoga classes and was talking to my instructor about blocks and straps and thought I would try one out since I needed a little height and support for some of the poses. I thought it would be weird at first, but I decided to go back to Aurorae since they seem like such a great company and bought their block. It's also a nice purple color. WOW! Got this block to help with my practice. It enables me to get in and out of some poses I struggle with, especially bending poses as I have a slipped disc in my back and it is hard for me to get down to the floor so the block brings the floor to me. The aurorae block is sturdy and very light to carry.

If you need two make sure you take advantage of there buy 2 for $19.95 sale. Nice savings for such a quality block.

Not much needs to be said about Velcro, so I'll keep this brief. I'm a licensed family child care provider and use these for file folder games I make for the kids. I wanted clear ones so they wouldn't cover up the pictures underneath, but beige and white ones worked fine, too. I love the coins more than the strips as there is no cutting or removal of backing involved, saving me lots of time (and stress because cutting Velcro strips is not something I'd wish on my worst enemy). Yes, they cost more this way, but not when I figure my time into the equation. They have stayed on through 6+ years of use by the kids and I expect they'll cotinue to do so. They are easy to apply and are the perfect size. Just know that they are VERY tough to remove once you put them on, so be sure you place them correctly the first time. The product works great and I love being able to use it on a variety of different things around my home. However, the dispenser doesnt keep both sides lined up and you have to have a large amount hanging out of one kind to be able to access the other kind. A little annoying when trying to store it neatly, but not too big of a deal.

I purchased these for a very specific purpose, so I am quite happy the package arrived today. I need them to replace some old velcro dots. These are just a tad smaller than the ones they replace, but I have plenty on hand when I next need another replacement.

Since there is already an excellent plot synopsis, and good reviews, I have just a few comments. In selecting acting roles, Alec Guinness clearly felt that variety was the spice of life !"The Man in the White Suit" is a brilliant, but very eccentric scientist, and Guinness is of course terrific in the lead. As always, Cecil Parker is fine in support, and Joan Greenwood, with her breathy, seductive voice, is wonderful. As other reviewers have noted, watch for Ernest Thesiger as "Sir John"--in just a few scenes he manages to convey pure evil and greed very convincingly.While this film has humour, it is not quite a comedy in the usual sense. Its various themes and messages ring true even today. "Planned obsolescence" is as much a part of modern manufacturing as it has ever been. The possibility of a product that never wears out and will never need to be replaced is every big business' worst nightmare, and hardly good news for labour either. This comes across in the movie, and in 2003 I don't expect that the reaction would be any different. We have been hearing about engines that run on solar power or even water for years--guess how much "big oil" is going to let that happen ? ! The movie has a number of unforgettable scenes, including the climax where Guinness is cornered by the mob of workers and capitalists, united in their fear. The ending is as upbeat as one could expect, without compromising the seriousness of the theme.The picture quality of the DVD is fine, especially for a 52-year old film.If you like classic movies that are aimed at your brain, as well as your funny-bone, "The Man in the White Suit" fills the bill. Yet another madcap Ealing comedy starring Alec Guinness as a scientist who invents a fabric that won't soil or wear out. Realizing that such a fabric would spell ruin for the whole textile industry, the company wants Guinness to sign over the invention to them so they can suppress it. He, of course, wants it known to the whole world: it's his ticket to fame.



Quite a tug-of-war develops between Guinness and the government henchmen involving chases, bribery, kidnapping, and other lunacies. But it all comes to naught when the lasting qualities of the fabric prove to be defective. Guinness is wonderful and the script is taut and hilarious. It's a neat little black comedy on industrialism vs. the entrepeneur. From that devilish smile on Guinness's face at the end, it looks like the battle goes on. Terrific fun; definitely worth a watch.

Just a note--I can't find as anyone's caught this. The soundtrack for this film is by Benjamin Frankel, a serious British composer whose symphonies are highly regarded, and is one of the best film scores Ive encountered in some time. In fact I'm surprised it isn't better known as it approaches the quality Sir William Walton reached in his Shakespeare scores for Olivier. I'd buy this DVD just for the music.



Otherwise this is an absolutely wonderful flick and, as an exercise in humorous cynicism about how the modern world operates I'd double-bill it with Wilder's absurdly under-rated "One, Two, Three."

The Man in the White Suit seems to me to be partially a satire on Ayn Rand's the Fountainhead. Alec Guinness plays Sidney Stratton deadpan in the role of the lone, mad scientist of the British clothing industry. Stratton is on a mission to create a new fabric that never gets dirty and never wears out. His bizarre quest gets him fired from one after another jobs as a scientist as he diverts (or as the British would say, cadges) equipment and supplies from companies to his projects. He then works as a janitor still cadging supplies and hiding his experiments until he is discovered and promoted by the daughter (Joan Greenwood) of one of the captains of industry.



After he is promoted, he is given full support for his bizarre idea. Then, another of the elements of satire is the mad scientist of the horror films of the late 40's, with suitable lights flashing, "boops....beeps" and water gurgling sound effects, and a few explosions of the works.



This leads to curiosity...what is he up to? Then, word leaks out that he is working on a cloth that never gets dirty and never wears out. At first it sounds like a good idea but soon the Schumpeterian creative destruction implications of this invention for jobs, businesses, and industries, becomes clear to the industry leaders, the unions, and the ordinary workers. Then, another object of satire in this movie proceeds as all the groups go to battle against each other and then eventually against this man and his invention.



Then the movie goes into a chase scene with Guinness wearing this incredibly luminous white suit..... but you'll have to watch the movie to find out how it ends.

Although Alec Guinness had already achieved a fair degree of fame on stage and on screen by the time he made THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT, this is, in fact, one of his earliest starring roles. Strictly speaking, although he had portrayed eight characters in 1949's KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS, this was his first comedy in which is played the lead. Playing inventor Sidney Stratton, Guinness further cemented his burgeoning reputation as one of England's most interesting and versatile actors.The film features a marvelous though, to early 21st century film fans, largely unknown cast. Joan Greenwood, who is one of my favorite actresses in the history of film--beautiful, effortlessly sexy and sensual, enormously talented, and possessed of one of the great voices in the history of cinema--plays Guinness's romantic counterfoil. Cecil Parker, who while never a star, seemed to populate dozens of successful films without ever calling attention to himself. The film also features a typical performance by Ernest Thesiger, who played ancient-old-man parts for over forty years in films and is one of the most unique looking actors in British film history. The story involves a quirky scientist inventing cloth that never gets dirty and never wears out, but which comes out of the lab pure white. This was at a time when a whole range of new synthetic fabrics were hitting the market, so the subject was very topical at the time. The plot revolves around the anticipated effects such material would have on the textile industry. The film is a comedy, but it is the kind of comedy that creates more smiles than laughs. Noise Cancelling Headphones - monster, dr dre

I'll start out by saying I collect mid-priced headphones(between $50 - $300). It may be an odd hobby, but it gives me a certain perspective that others may not have. I'm also an engineering major, and I found the general lack of objective, in-depth headphone reviews on Amazon to be disconcerting. So, here I am, taking a shot at reviewing some of the headphones I either own or have spent a lot of time listening to.



I've devised a simple six-song test and rating system, where 0 - 2 is abysmal, 2.1 - 4 is poor, 4.1 - 6 is mediocre, 6.1 - 8 is above average, and 8.1 - 10 is excellent.



The songs are very diverse; I was trying to represent a wide range of genres. They are "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac(encoded in 256 kbps Ogg Vorbis), "Every Planet We've Reached is Dead" by Gorillaz(256 kbps .ogg), "Concerto Grosso #26 in D major" by Handel(256 kbps .ogg), "I Know You Are, But What Am I?" by Mogwai(500 kbps .ogg), "Afro Blue" by Triplexity(192 kbps .ogg), and "The Patient" by Tool(500 kbps .ogg).



I listened to everything on an iAudio 7 with the equalizer set to flat and all the sound effects turned off.



Sound Quality(6.8/10)



The Chain(6/10) - bass is nice and deep, slightly exaggerated, but still pleasant to listen to. Distortion is present, but very minimal. Mid tones and highs are somewhat underrepresented and bland, but otherwise sound decent. Instrument separation is a bit muddy. The main negative here is the sound stage, which is tiny.



Every Planet(8/10) - lows and highs both sound very smooth and rich in this song. Mid tones, as before, are underrepresented and bland. Instrument separation is good, but the sound stage is very underwhelming.



Concerto(6/10) - the bass in this song is deep and vibrant. Lows are nicely responsive. Mids and highs don't have quite the balanced presence they should have. Instrument separation is fairly muddy. Once again, the sound stage is lacking.



I Know You Are(7/10) - bass, as expected, is nice and vivid. Distortion was too high near the beginning of the song, but gradually leveled off. Highs were nice and crisp, but mid tones were lacking. Instrument separation, as was the case with most other songs, is a bit muddy, and the sound stage, while not as bad in this song, is still mediocre.



Afro Blue(8/10) - the lows in this song were pleasantly punchy, and the highs were fairly crisp and smooth. Mid tones were muddy, however, as was the overall instrument separation(no surprises here). The sound stage is similar to what it was in "I Know You Are, But What Am I?"; it is more present than in most songs, but doesn't have the fullness I would expect of circumaural headphones at this price.



The Patient(6/10) - right off the bat, the bass guitar in this song sounds great. Treble is decent, but underrepresented, as are the mid tones. The primary complaint I had in this song was actually not the sound stage(which isn't emphasized anyway), but the instrument separation, which I felt was greatly lacking in precision.



Overall Sound(6.8/10) - the bass from these cans is overall clean and pleasant. Somewhat exaggerated, but not greatly so. Distortion, while present at times, is also in small amounts. These aren't the subs-attached-to-your-head that some might expect before having listened to them. Treble sounds above average, but slightly underrepresented. The mid tones even more so - to the extent that they come across as bland. Instrument separation is also a bit muddy(although not too terrible). Another reviewer commented that these headphones were designed to sound slightly muddy, but I find this hard to believe, since the advertisement on Amazon claims "precise audio clarity". But as I've mentioned time and again, the biggest drawback to these cans is the sound stage, which just wasn't there. Overall, though, I would give these headphones an above average score in terms of sound quality.





Design(9/10)

These are a closed-air, cirumaural design, and a very attractive one at that. I like the styling very much. Lines on these phones are aggressive, but clean and elegant at the same time. They are also very comfortable. They're lightweight and have plenty of padding. My only complaint here is the headband, which I felt was too rigid, and didn't conform to my head as much as I'd have liked. I also like how mobile these are - they fold up, and come with a nice case to carry them around in. Great for traveling.



They are also built pretty well. I would rather see more aluminum at this price, but the plastic they're composed of is nice and solid. They seem durable, and I doubt they would fall apart anytime soon.



Noise Isolation(7/10)

Noise isolation in these Monsters is accomplished via the closed circumaural design, which features plenty of thick padding, and active destruction of outside sound waves entering the headphone. I am a fan of the former; the latter, not so much. In my experience, active noise cancellation interferes with sound quality, not only because of the waves that must be emitted to interfere with incoming ambient noise, but also because an external headphone amplifier can't really be used with noise-canceling headphones due to their built-in amplifier, which is typically not of premium quality. It's difficult to judge on a case-by-case basis, because the built-in amp can't be removed, but going by the sound produced by the Monster Beats, I don't think they're an exception to this rule.



All of that aside, the Monsters were definitely designed to be noise-canceling, so I won't dock points for that. What I will take off points for is relative effectiveness, which I didn't feel was where it should be, all things considered. They do block quite a lot of noise, but plenty of noise still bleeds through. I've heard noise-canceling headphones that are considerably more effective. Then again, I've also heard much worse, and these, in my opinion, are above average.



Bottom Line(6/10)

Monster Beats by Dr. Dre are a good, above-average sounding and noise-isolating pair of headphones that feature a comfortable, highly stylish, and mobile design. This doesn't come close to justifying their high price, however. Sound quality should be significantly higher in this price range. But as always, different people perceive sound quality in different ways, and I highly encourage you to listen for yourself to a wide range of headphones before spending money. Those interested in good, deep bass at or under the price of the Monsters should also listen to various Beyerdynamic headphones, and the ATH-D40fs model by Audio Technica. I ordered a Sephora Gift Card on 11/25 to ship by 12/8. I sent a follow up e-mail on 12/10. The response on 12/15 said the card would ship in 2 to 3 days. I called on 12/21 and my order had not been processed. I was advised it would not be delivered by Christmas but there is a "no cancellation policy." Finally on 12/28, the gift card I ordered on 11/25 arrived, too late for the holiday gift intended. My personal advice is to avoid purchasing gift cards that are distributed by Gift Card Mall. I don't know what kind of sweatshop these guys are running, but I've had problems with them since day ONE--I tried to give them ZERO STARS, but I HAD to give them at least one (which is being generous, in my opinion). I ordered my cards well in advance, and they still did not arrive on time. When I called the company to figure out what the issue was, they sent my phone call to somewhere in India--I was put on hold numerous times while they scrambled around trying to figure out what was going on with an order they had sent. When they finally had some information, they GUARANTEED a delivery date--the date passed with NO cards in the mail whatsoever. Apparently, this 'company' (and I use that term very loosely) takes 2+ weeks to process and send out FAULTY orders.



When the individual DID receive the card it looked as though it had been used, and did not even WORK. When I explained to 'GiftCard Mall' what had happened, and told them that my mother said it looked like the card was in rough condition (the individual at the store the card was purchased for, in fact, confirmed the card HAD been reloaded--she had guessed it was multiple times from the shape the card was in), they implied that she was lying about it! The manager I spoke with on the phone was constantly interrupting me and trying to speak over me while I was trying to explain myself--trying to convince me that the United States Postal Service doesn't have tracking numbers. I told the manager that I was guaranteed a delivery date when I called previously, at the very least I expect a company to stick by the guarantees THEY offer, but apparently this company does NOT stick by their promises. The records they had of my previous conversation was entirely lacking, and instead of trying to resolve the issue the 'manager' (I say this because he was both condescending and unprofessional) then sent me off to get lost in the paperwork of some 'corporate office.'



I love Amazon, and I love the convenience of online shopping--I would have been a FREQUENT customer of GiftCard Mall, but this business isn't a business at all. These guys take your order and your HARD-EARNED MONEY, and then throw an old, previously used giftcard in the mail hoping it's the right store, with the right amount, going to the right location--if not, oh well! It will be your fault...but only because you still chose to order from them after reading this.



From now on, I will be buying my giftcards the old-fashioned way--if it ain't broke...

This 50.00 Sephora gift card came on time. It was during the hectic holiday season. When the card came in the mail, I just pulled it out of the envelope and inserted it into a gift box for my son's girlfriend. When the time came to use it, turns out, it needed to be activated before it could be used. Needless to say, I did not do this, and had egg on my face. I wrote to the seller and was promptly emailed another activation code, which I prompty did online, and the card was then ok to use. I did not know gift cards had to be activated, and did not take the time to look at it when came.

I cannot tell you how excited I was to receive a gift card from Sephora; however, when I tried to use it at [...], the site informed me the gift card had not been activated yet. I called the Gift Card Mall's 800 number and spoke with a very pleasant representative who informed me that I would have to wait an additional 1-2 business days for the card to be activated. "Sometimes these cards aren't activated when they're sent out," she said. After that, she gave me a ticket number and I was told I would receive a call when the card had been activated.

I run my own business and let me tell you: this is some rather lackluster professionalism that Gift Card Mall is trying to pass off. Gift Card Mall, try to muster up some professionalism, okay?

I often give gift cards as gifts to friends, family and teachers because I like them to find something that they will definitely like or be able to use (and because I am one of those overly-scheduled people). I was not sure how well buying a gift card online was going to go since I usually buy gift cards at stores. The downside of buying gift cards at stores for your friends/family who live far away is the additional follow-up needed, e.g., buying a greeting card, getting the right amount of postage and then putting it in the mail. Buying online was SO convenient in those cases. I also liked having a variety to choose from. This time I bought a Sephora card for my sister's birthday but I expect I will be back for more since I am a last minute shopper and with the holidays right around the corner.

Purchasing gifts on the internet is always hard. No matter how detailed the photos and description are, you never REALLY know what your buying. I live far away from my mother and this was a perfect mother's d ay gift.

After reading reviews for Gift Card Mall I was hesistant about buying a card, but my sister adores Sephora and since I live overseas and can't purchase directly from the sephora web site without a US credit card or billing address I took a punt and purchased a card through Amazon. It arrived quickly and she had no problems using it. I love Amazon but the reviews for Gift Card Mall have been fairly poor across all their products (I also looked at reviews for their other cards), I guess I was just lucky that I didn't have a similar experience to other people. If I had the option of buying directly from these other retailers I might have done that, but things worked out well regardless. I hope Gift Card Mall improves its business as it has a great opportunity here with Amazon! - Gift Card Mall - Sephora'
