Great Concept-frustra

Wow! this program works on the 'White Pangigital Novel'!

Just wished there was some way to 'store/buffer' one or two of the movies so when not near WiFi could still watch a movie to two!

OF two of the streams that I have watched, they seeme to of been cleaned up when compaired to the same video that I have purchased via DVD or iTunes. Movie Vault - Classic Films

Getting access to hundreds or possibly thousands (didn't count) of old, 'public domain' movies for about $2 can't be a bad thing if the app works and the app does work... kind of. I will provide a brief overview of what the Movie Vault offers followed by an enumeration of 'positives' and 'negatives' and my final rating.

OVERVIEW

The old movies (mostly from the 50's or older but I actually found 1976 flick) can be viewed by 'genre' - Comedy, Crime, Drama, Horror, War... and so on - or you may search for a specific title (good luck with that). For each movie you can see some IMDb metadata prior to running it - year, runtime, brief description, director, actors and IMDb's star rating. You have the ability to place the movies that interest you in a queue. Then... press the 'play' button and the movie plays.

POSITIVES

- Large number of otherwise hard to get old movies. It's a pretty good selection. It's possible that many of them can be found on Netflix but, off a sample of randomly picked 5 Movie Vault titles, only one existed on Netflix.

- On my XOOM (Android 3.2 Wi-Fi) tablet, movies load and play quickly.

- Picture quality meets expectations. Just don't expect HD or DVD-quality. Think of what a picture might have looked like on an onld '50s or '60s TV set.

NEGATIVES

- On my XOOM it does not switch from portrait to landscape when I rotate the tablet. It's set to always portrait when in the 'menu' mode and to always landscape when actually playing the movie.

- When viewing the available movies, all you see is the IMDb graphic thumbnail that has the movie title but often it's so blurry, you need to get into the 'details' to actually read title.

- IMDb's blurbs are truncated to 5 lines and it's impossible to get to the full movie descriptions.

- Search function will return anything from the IMDb's database that has that string. For example, searching for 'CARS' returned 'Fighting Stallion' because one of the the actors starring was named Robert CARSo.

- It does NOT work offline. Placing a movie in the queue does not actually download it and, with a Wi-Fi tablet, once you move outside Wi-Fi range the app crashes if already running or refuses to start.

- If you switch out of the movie, it does not remember where you left when you come back and it will restart from the beginning.

MY RATING

I am not at all unhappy with this app. In fact I expect to be using it often for the reasons I highlighted in the 'positives' section. However, the navigation and the movie viewing experience CAN be frustrating (see the 'negatives'). I will rate this app '3 stars' meaning "it's Okay" but I hope to improve my rating some day if and when the publisher upgrades it to address at least some of the little problems.

Overall, if you are into watching older movies and you don't mind the not so high picture and sound quality, this is a good buy.

The Three Stooges "Malice in the Palace" among other Stooges movies, "Mooch goes to Hollywood" starring a dog named Mooch - oh, and Vincent Price and Jim Backus, some East Side Kids, and, my favorite, "Rescue from Gilligan's Island," are here in the Comedy genre. With lots of catagories - musicals (like "Jack and the Beanstalk" starring, get this, Abbott and Costello! More traditional is "Road to Bali" starring Bing Crosby, Hope, and Lamour), sci-fi (like Flash Gordon or "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" starring John Barrymore),and westerns (including John Wayne and Roy Rogers), just to name a few, there is something for everyone. Granted, these are older movies and are not the Hi-Def some people are now used to, but they are still fun. Some movies are old black and white, and some are in color. These work well on my Samsung Charge. Well worth the $1.99 price.Four stars instead of five as it would have been nice if the movies were a little "cleaner" sound and video-wise. But they are still fun.

This software for 1.99 is a steal if you enjoy old movies .. even a few newer ones. Installation consisted of first updating the OS firmware of my Archos 70 internet tablet and then installing Movievault followed by a cold reboot. Its worked first time and everytime since initial install without a hitch. My only minor complaint; I often find myself backing out of a genre category with the OS systems return key only to find I've exited Movievault and find myself looking at my home screen. It's necessary to "press" the "genre" tab to return to main menu. Not a big deal but something I hope to see Flingsoft change in future updates. Buy it!

This app has some great classic films, but what makes it fabulous are all the old, cheesy horror films. If you love the old horror movies shown on Saturdays years ago by guys dressed up like Dracula, this is the app for you.'
