I bought this timer to control the exhaust fans in my bathrooms. Be aware that like all timers, it is wide and deep. It requires patience and creativity to install in tight box. Also, since it is mechanical, there is a quiet ticking when in use. PROS: It does the job and looks OK. CONS: The mechanism feels delicate. After debating about if it's possible to teach my dog to turn off the switch on the fireplace for me, I decided installing a timer would probably just be easier. Most timer switches need to have a higher load than what a fireplace pulls so wouldn't work. This works perfectly. Very easy to install. Yes, I'm stupid and didn't flip the breaker to install it but managed to install it without getting a jolt...that's how easy it is. As far as the downside...it makes a constant "click click click" sound like an old school kitchen timer when it's on. It's very quiet and ambient sound is normally enough to drown it out, but a romantic floor picnic in front of the fireplace now is undermined by "click click click". Not a deal breaker though. The other thing is the face plate. The face plate isn't attached to the switch housing. That's so you can use a normal toggle wall plate rather than having to get a Decora/GFCI wall plate. Unfortunately, my wall plate is a Decora/GFCI wall plate. The face plate is suppose to go one after putting up the wall plate and is suppose to be held in place with a locking nut and the timer knob...but it's not. It goes slightly askew when you turn the dial because it's effectively free floating. The last downside is that white isn't really white. It has a slight purplish tint too it. When you have a white wall plate behind it, the color difference is very noticeable. I'm sure that after awhile I'll quit feeling all OCD about the color and won't notice any more...but right now, it's annoying. Overall, given the fact that other timer switches won't work on this particular outlet, I would buy it again. But it wouldn't be my first choice.
I replaced an existing exhaust fan piano switch with this timer. Installation was straightforward ie package had all the necessary wire join thimbles/screws etc. With several users complaining about the unit dying prematurely, I'm concerned and counting the months. Its only been 2/3 months yet. Timers in our other baths picked & installed by a pricey (but quality) electrician looks better finished and feels more solid (when I turn the knob) than this one. But this works OK. So far.
Learned 2 things that may help buyers:
1. Each manufacturer's "white" is a different shade/hue. So this 'white' timer is quite a contrast from my existing 'white' faceplate.
2. Worse yet, each manufacturer's design uses a slightly different rise from the sheet rock surface. My existing white faceplate is maybe 1/8 inch raised from the sheet rock while this timer installs flat against the sheet rock. Result, a timer that is not color co-ordinated nor surface mounted right. Looks like a patch job.
So, to do it right ALL switch/timer/faceplate etc. must be from same manufacturer and probably bought together. Rather pricey proposition (cf. to old style regular parts from home depot) if you ask me. Could run almost $100 for a gang of 1 switch, 1 dimmer and a timer & faceplate.
Ignore the user review about some wires not made of copper. This is a normal practice, and irrelevant.
About the user that had a failure, that's real, no doubt. I wish I knew the reliability statistics.
But....ours is working great, while used 4-8 times per day for about 8 months now. That's well over 1000 uses so far.
This is easy to install, and comes with all the appropriate screws, including white screw for the cover plate. The plastic is a shade whiter than the standard Leviton Decora cover plate. In comparison to the Intermatic equivalent the mechanism feels of lower quality and is noticeably noisier in operation (there is a loud tick). The control knob is also larger and harder to read. Personally I would buy the Intermatic product in future as overall it feels slightly better quality, but this is adequate for most needs.
This timer works great to keep the bathroom fan running for the recommended 20 minutes after a shower. With a house that is sealed well against outside weather, this is particularly important, and this timer does the trick perfectly.

I had to return this timer because it had a problem where it occasionally wouldn't shut off. From reading other reviews it seems I'm not the only one with this problem. Winding it well past the desired time and then working back to the time I wanted didn't help as it would still just stop ticking at some point. I ended up getting the Intermatic FD60MWC 60-Minute Spring Loaded Wall Timer, White instead and I like that one a lot better.
